NPR Develops New Website for Apple iPad Users

N

PR fans who are also tech gurus will be pleased to know that NPR’s Digital Team is preparing a specialized website for users of Apple’s newest gadget, the iPad. With a mission to remain an innovator in the digital space, NPR is excited to

support users of innovations such as the iPad. From day one, iPad users who visit npr.org will get an experience that is optimized for the device. Features like the NPR audio player have been converted to technology (HTML-5) supported by the iPad and been given a better display. Also, the team has

modified the navigation and made the site more “touch” friendly, as well as improved sponsorship opportunities. Like the iPhone application, the iPad app will prominently feature WSIU Radio’s live stream and on-demand programming. The site will be in place for the April 3 launch of iPad.

eet Caitlin Fijolek, a senior at Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC) pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Hospitality and Tourism Administration. As a requirement of one her Hospitality courses - Service Organization & Management - Fijolek was required to complete 25 hours of community service. When searching for possible volunteer opportunities, Fijolek came across the Southern Illinois Radio Information Service

With only approximately 10 weeks under her belt as a student volunteer reader, Fijolek has already found it rewarding to read on-air to community members. “Reading for SIRIS is usually the highlight of my day,” says Fijolek. “When we read articles such as editorials or community sports, it’s great to know that the listeners are able to hear names that they can recognize such as their grandchildren or family friends.” Fijolek says that her service with SIRIS is a unique and joyous experience. “Volunteering with SIRIS is a different kind of service. Being in the hospitality field, I’m used to directly helping others when I volunteer, but

in this position, it is solely my voice that is doing the major work.” Fijolek hopes that other undergraduate students will find the time to volunteer with SIRIS. “I wish I would have known about volunteering with SIRIS earlier. You don’t even notice how one hour a day can help someone else tremendously.” When Fijolek is not in class, studying, or volunteering with SIRIS, she enjoys working at the Student Health Assessment Center, volunteering with the Saluki Single Parent Program, exercising, reading, hiking, and swimming. WSIU Receives National Award

W

SIU Public Broadcasting received a My Source Education Innovation Award from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) on Saturday, March 20 in Washington, D.C. This honor marks the second consecutive national award that WSIU has received for its implementation of My Source. The My Source Education Innovation Awards recognize and showcase how public broadcasting stations use pioneering approaches and emerging digital technologies to serve the educational needs of their communities on the air, online, and in the classroom. “Stations across the country are using technology in creative and innovative ways to deliver educational tools and resources that are making a real difference to teachers, parents and children,” says Pat Harrison, president and CEO of CPB. “Public media is the definitive education partner for a new

generation of learners, and CPB congratulates WSIU for its outstanding contribution to the community.” WSIU received the award for our innovative approach WSIU Outreach Coordinator, Vickie Devenport (right), in using public media accepts WSIU’s 2010 My Source Education Innovation resources to improve Award from Pat Harrison, president and CEO of the teacher instruction and Corporation for Public Broadcasting, at the Council student outcomes. Underwriter Profile: Camp Ondessonk

C

amp Ondessonk of Ozark, Illinois is in the Shawnee National Forest. Ondessonk summer camp programs encourage kids to “have fun, grow spiritually, make friends, grow in selfconfidence, and develop important traditional values.” These programs allow children ages 8-16 to experience everything from tree-house camping to horseback riding in an American Camp Association-accredited camp. Dan King, Ondessonk Executive Director, says many people don’t realize Ondessonk also has conference facilities, lodging, and year-round programs for school, youth, and adult groups on outdoor education, team building, horseback riding, rock climbing, and more. King believes the WSIU partnership is a natural fit because Camp Ondessonk shares WSIU’s mission to promote positive change and strengthen community through integrity, fairness, balance, diversity, sustainability, and collaboration.

“As a Not-for-Profit, our marketing budget is extremely small but WSIU helps us to reach our target audience with an effective return on our sponsorship investment. I’m certain our radio announcements have elevated our profile in Southern Illinois. We’ve received numerous calls. People often tell me in social settings that they hadn’t thought about Camp Ondessonk for a while and the WSIU messages triggered good memories about their experiences. The thing I’m most pleased with is that our PR dollars are helping to fund great public radio. We are a non-profit in support of another non-profit. It feels right. Public broadcasting serves an important role as a trusted source for community awareness and local and national news.” “One of the funniest responses I hear is that people have finally learned to spell Ondessonk from WSIU’s message that ‘details and registration are at o-n-d-es-s-o-n-k-dot-com’.”

“Several of our staff members listen to Morning Edition and Fresh Air daily. On the weekends we always try to catch Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me!, American Routes, Celtic Connections, Car Talk, and A Prairie Home Companion.” King also notes that “Speaking of Faith is a Sunday ritual for me with its engaging educational content.” For more information about Camp Ondessonk, call 618-695-2489 or visit www.ondessonk.com.

Underwriter Profile: Advanced Energy Solutions Group According to Aur Beck, AES Chief Technician, many people are surprised to know that today’s ability to conserve and create power goes beyond familiar solar, wind, and water technology to other sources, even including bicycle power.

A

dvanced Energy Solutions Group, Inc. (AES) of southern Illinois installs and sells solar and wind power systems, and educates and trains people about energy efficiency and making electricity using sun and wind and other renewable sources. Their installation and service region covers eight Midwestern states although they have traveled wherever needed in the U.S. or abroad. In addition to professional design, technical support, and installation of solar systems, AES also works with various community colleges to train new technicians around the Midwest.

AES underwrites WSIU Radio morning and afternoon news programs. According to Beck, it was a natural partnership because AES and WSIU both focus on education, sharing information, and helping others. “I wanted to underwrite to support the station. It’s important for the community to support public radio because it’s is a true connection to the community. That’s what public radio is… community in action.” Beck reports that his underwriting has increased regional awareness of Advanced Energy Solutions Group.

“People tell me that they hear my announcements on WSIU.” Aur Beck’s history with WSIU Radio goes way back. “I grew up listening to WSIU. We didn’t have TV, so on weekends we sat around as a family and listened to WSIU Radio. I’ve listened to Whad’Ya Know? since I was 10 years old. If we kids didn’t get all the jokes, my dad would explain them to us. Saturday morning and Sunday evenings were our family times to listen together. A Prairie Home Companion was on every Sunday during our family dinner. Now, I also enjoy Wait! Wait! Don’t Tell Me! on Saturdays.” For more information about Advanced Energy Solutions Group products, services, and community education activities, call 1-800-229-0453 or visit online at theenergysolutions.com.

I can count on WSIU and NPR for trusted news and great music. -Lora Blackwell, Anna, Illinois

The first thing that I do when I get up in the morning and the last thing that I do at night is listen to public radio. I turn on the radio beside the bed, and when I go in to the kitchen to make the coffee, I turn on the other one. As I move back and forth all morning getting ready, I don’t miss anything! The news offers much more than just the headlines. I really love All Things Considered and the weekend news, and I enjoy having the music on and not having to worry about changing CDs.
