A big THANK YOU to our WSIU members who recruited new members and called or pledged online during our first-ever, one-day-only “Powered

by Two! Twosday” new member campaign on “Twosday”, June 24. Together we raised nearly $7,000 to support WSIU’s programs and community services – and all in just under 16 hours! Plus, our current WSIU donors recruited over 30 new members!

We kicked off this fun event at 6am, which featured WSIU, SIU, and community volunteers sharing Powered by Two! stories and messages throughout the day, interspersed with fun, pre-recorded spots celebrating the “power of two.” We wrapped up the day with a three-hour Musicpalooza of pop, rock,

Join us on July 3 for a new In the Author’s Voice segment featuring southern Illinois-based writer Laura Benedict who talks about her new novel Bliss House and how she got started writing scary stories. Benedict was featured recently on the WSIU Radio series Southern Illinois Wonders, which can be heard online at news.wsiu.org/ post/novelist-laura-benedict.

Bliss House tells the haunting story of St. Louis resident Rainey Bliss Adams and her 14-year-old daughter, Ariel, who suffer the sudden loss of their beloved husband and father, respectively, and attempt to rebuild their shattered lives at the family’s ancestral home, Bliss House, in Old Gate, Virginia. An impressive structure, the historic country retreat is also plagued with dark secrets, ghostly visions, and strange occurrences, including a shocking murder on the night of the Adams’ housewarming party.

Radio Voices Presents Four New Episodes Thursdays

WSIU is proud to present four new student pieces that will run as part of our ongoing series Radio Voices.

These original stories and essays were produced by SIU Carbondale Radio-TV-Digital Media students in Eileen Waldron’s class “Telling Stories For Radio.” To learn more about the new segments, contact Waldron at ewaldron@siu.edu.

Benedict’s work also includes the novels Devil’s Oven (Gallowstree, 2012), Calling Mr. Lonely Hearts (Ballantine, 2008), and Isabella Moon (Ballantine, 2007). Her writing has appeared in Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine and numerous anthologies. With her husband, Pinckney Benedict, a professor of creative writing at SIU Carbondale, she founded and edited Surreal South: An Anthology of Short Fiction series, published by Press 53. Benedict also edited the crime fiction anthology Feeding Kate (Gallowstree, 2012) to benefit the Lupus Foundation of America.

The series has aired on WSIU for ten years.

Composer John Williams will debut a special arrangement of “The Star Spangled Banner” featuring the National Symphony Orchestra, the Joint Armed Forces Chorus, the Choral Arts Society of Washington, and the U.S. Army Herald Trumpets.

Peterson, editor of the St. Louis Baseball Reader and author of Extra Innings: Writing on Baseball, will talk about the way that baseball, as a game, invites storytelling because of the spaces between pitches, batters, and innings. He will also discuss baseball’s long history on the radio, where fans could hear sportswriters and broadcasters weave narratives about the game and old-time ballplayers could spin the glory of their times in oral histories.
