llinois 12th District Democratic candidate William Enyart of Belleville, Republican candidate Jason Plummer of O’Fallon, and Green Party candidate Paula Bradshaw of Carbondale will debate the issues in the final round of three scheduled debates. The 90-minute debate will take place on Wednesday, October 10 at 7pm at Lindenwood University in Belleville, Illinois. WSIU-TV’s Jak Tichenor will moderate the debate, with questioning from Jennifer Fuller of WSIU Public Radio, Gary Metro of the Southern Illinoisan, and Beth Hundsdorfer of the Belleville News-Democrat. It will air live on WSIU Radio and on WSIU-TV on Friday, October 12 at 8pm (repeats 10/14, 4pm).

eet SIRIS Volunteer Steve Falcone. Originally from Philadelphia, Pa., Steve came to Carbondale in 1966 as a graduate student at Southern Illinois University. After graduation, he lived in Texas where he was an instructor at Southwest Texas State College. Later, following his passion for writing, he moved to Ireland where he wrote a book of short stories. After a year in Ireland, he came back to the States and lived in New England for a while. After years of traveling around, he eventually found his way back to Carbondale, a place where he could settle down and raise a family.

Shortly after his return to Carbondale, Falcone found himself back in the classroom as an English professor at John A. Logan College. He retired two years ago, but still works with the Theater Department directing plays. Falcone says it was an interview with Dan Hill in the April 2011 issue of Signal that prompted his involvement with SIRIS. Falcone knew that if young men like Dan were doing their share to help, he could, as well. Falcone has been volunteering as a reader at SIRIS for almost six months now, and has fun sharing local tidbits with listeners. He believes it’s important to support community service organizations like SIRIS because “nothing good is going to happen in the community without grassroots level support.” He believes working with organizations that build the entire community is worthwhile, and hopes to inspire others through his service work. Falcone’s wife is a retired social worker, and also does a great deal of community work volunteering at the local food pantry. “We believe in doing what we can to help out the community, and believe that everyone should,” said Falcone. “We’re blessed to have pretty good health, and we’re retired and feeling well…[we’ll do] anything [we] can do to give back.” An interesting fact about Steve Falcone is that his children are actors living in Hollywood, and his daughter-in-law is actress Melissa McCarthy. When he’s not busy writing or traveling, you can find him at home listening to NPR, or watching Inspector Lewis and Sherlock Holmes with his wife. He’s also a huge sports fan who loves to keep up with all of the Philadelphia teams.

Coming This Month on Morning Edition... First and Main
ll Things Considered presents NPR’s Backseat Book Club, a special segment aimed at young people between the ages of 9 to 14, hosted by Michele Norris.
The book club encourages engagement with children Host Michele Norris. – the kids who listen Photo: 2007 NPR by Stephen Voss. in their parents’ cars or kitchens while doing their homework – that are part of our family of listeners. Each month All Things Considered (ATC) chooses a special book and asks kids to read it and submit questions or comments for the author to backseatbookclub@npr. org. When the author is interviewed on ATC by Michele Norris, the club members’ questions will frame the conversation. They can ask authors where they got their inspiration, why they chose a particular setting, or how they know so much about the topics they write about. The project is also a potential resource for parents and teachers looking for quality books to share with their children and students.

October 20 | Solo Gigs This week’s program shines the light on solo work by members of bands. We usually hear them in their full band surroundings, but this week we turn to their solo albums for a greater appreciation of their individual talents.
October 27 | Irish & American Collaborations Traditional Irish musicians are collaborating more and more with acoustic American musicians, and this week we highlight some of these recent projects.
