Make Me Over!

WSIU Updates News Website As WSIU continues to grow, we must evolve to meet the demands of the digital age. Part of this evolution includes ensuring our programs, news features, and other content are widely available and accessible. Traditionally, we’ve reached you through TV and radio broadcasts, but in the digital age, we’ve expanded our reach to include streaming media, podcasts, and responsive websites. In June, we redesigned our WSIU News website at news.wsiu.org to optimize it for viewing on an array of devices. The redesign enables visitors to have the best experience with our web-based content – whether accessing our site from a computer at home or work or while on-the-go via a tablet or mobile device. If you have any comments, questions, or recommendations about our most recent changes to the WSIU News website, contact WSIU’s Digital Services Manager, Katrina Stackhouse, at (618) 453-6258 or webmaster@wsiu.org.

New Fiscal Year Brings Challenges, Opportunities to WSIU Radio & TV Like many non-profits and institutes of higher education in Illinois, WSIU is facing its most difficult budget planning process ever – a process made more challenging by the loss of $70,000 due to rescissions to the Illinois Arts Council budget. Although change is seldom easy or painless, we are working diligently to craft a budget for this fiscal year and beyond that will bring you the highest quality public media services possible while also building a more sustainable future for WSIU.

Photo: Nastco

After reviewing our budget options, we have decided to end our affiliation with Public Radio International (PRI), which means we will no longer carry Whad’Ya Know? and Zorba Paster On Your Health. This is not a decision we take lightly, but given the financial commitments of our long-term contracts, combined with the relative hours of programming they provide, this change will give us greater budget flexibility with the least impact on our schedules. On the next page, you’ll see our new WSIU Radio schedules, which include such changes as moving Car Talk to our HD2 channel, plus the addition of new programs like Here & Now and On The Media. Dick Estell’s Radio Reader has concluded its run on WSIU, and Magic Soul has also wrapped up, as the producer and host, Wendell Hughes, graduated from SIU. The new FM schedules begin August 1. On TV, Lawrence Welk will end this month, while Dr. Who remains on hiatus until we have a more complete budget picture. You can find more details online at wsiu.org or direct your questions to WSIU Executive Director, Greg Petrowich, at greg.petrowich@wsiu.org.

The Great Solar Eclipse Special Feature on WSIU Radio Friday, August 21 | 7:44am & 4:44pm

Did you know that Carbondale is in the path of two total solar eclipses? On August 21, 2017 at 1:21pm CT, the first total solar eclipse over the U.S. since 1979 will reach its point of greatest duration just south of Carbondale. The next solar eclipse will occur April 8, 2024 – and the centerlines of totality for both eclipses intersect over Carbondale’s Cedar Lake! In this WSIU Radio feature, citizen scientist Fred Isberner, retired Associate Dean of the SIU College of Applied Sciences and Arts, talks with Kevin Boucher about these celestial events, as well as his recent trip to Iceland to view a partial eclipse using a state-of-the-art telescope on loan from NASA.
