August Highlights WSIU Takes Learning

Out of This World WSIU partners with local libraries year round to bring PBS KIDS-based learning opportunities to children. Recently, WSIU visited Christopher Public Library (photo at right) where 72 children and family members created a checklist of summer activities and shared drawings of their favorites. They learned about space with PBS KIDS program READY, JET, GO!, collected binoculars, stickers, and Summer Fun activity sheets, and checked out books to build reading skills. WSIU also traveled to Eldorado Memorial Public Library to help celebrate the culmination of the library’s summer reading program.

WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN DOING THIS SUMMER? Be sure to share your photos on Facebook using the hashtag #myfavoritesummer and see what other families are doing at pbs.org/ parents/summer/social-hub.

New Season Coming to Screens and Libraries WSIU and the CARBONDALE PUBLIC LIBRARY will partner once again for a new season of free INDIE LENS POP-UP film screenings and discussions. Events will begin later this fall. Watch for announcements in the next issue of Previews! Highlights of fall films include BEST OF ENEMIES featuring 1968 televised debates between liberal Gore Vidal and conservative William F. Buckley, and MEET THE PATELS, a romantic comedy about an Indian American involved in a love triangle between the woman of his dreams – and his parents. WSIU also will feature a series of program specials, such as CLASS OF ’27, leading up to AMERICAN EDUCATION WEEK in November. Stay tuned!
