WSIU Wraps Up 2016-17 Season seeking careers on stage and in film and television. In 2010, Calcaterra started the acting workshop “Act Out,” which tackles the challenges of the LGBTQ actor.
On Saturday, June 17, WSIU and the CARBONDALE PUBLIC LIBRARY wrapped up the 2016-17 season of INDIE LENS POP-UP with a screening of the INDEPENDENT LENS film, REAL BOY. The moving film follows the journey of Bennett, a transgender teen on a journey to find his voice as a musician, a son, and a man. Approximately 35 people attended the screening. A discussion was led by Herrin, Illinois native and actor and performance coach BRAD CALCATERRA, founder and creative director of THE STUDIO in New York City. The organization provides professional support to actors

On Friday, June 16, Calcaterra also directed a free performance workshop for area youth ages 13-19 at the Rainbow Café in Carbondale. Over 40 youth learned ways to explore and share their creative energies freely and openly, while honing their performance skills. Participants also enjoyed giveaways and prize drawings. Many thanks to this season’s project partners, including the CARBONDALE PUBLIC LIBRARY, the BOYS & GIRLS CLUB OF CARBONDALE, the SIU CARBONDALE DEBATE TEAM, the SIU SOUTH ASIAN COMMUNITY, the PEACE COALITION OF SOUTHERN ILLINOIS, and the RAINBOW CAFÉ.
