Out of Uncertainty Comes Sustainability UpFront WIth Greg Petrowich

Executive Director, WSIU Public Broadcasting greg.petrowich@wsiu.org

In July I wrote suggesting we were “Through the Looking-Glass” on a “Long Strange Trip” regarding our finances and the State of Illinois budget process. Needless to say, I did not imagine we’d be in the same place, with no budget and no sign of one, headed into November. Non-profit agencies operate in a world of uncertainty. Often it is the very reason we are founded. Public broadcasting came about to help insure there would always be a place for the thoughtful exchange of ideas and to provide public access to the arts and culture that inspire us all.

When we plan for uncertainty, however, it’s hard to imagine the state of Illinois being central to the uncertainty that clouds everything. Already this year we’ve endured a $97,000 reduction in funds from SIUC based largely on the absence

of its state appropriation. We’re waiting hopefully for an annual operating award of $150,000 from the Illinois Arts Council that seems less and less likely each day the budget impasse continues. Meanwhile, we continue to hear from supporters who stand with WSIU as the last hope for independent journalism…a place where they are not bombarded with yelling and screaming along with endless commercials. The number one question they ask is: “What can we do to help insure the future of WSIU?” Here’s what I tell them: “New. More. Forever.” [NEW] For those who haven’t made a gift to WSIU in the past year, I ask them to do so today. [MORE] For those who are already regular supporters of WSIU, I ask them to consider increasing their annual giving by at least 10% this year. [FOREVER] For all regular supporters of WSIU, I ask them to switch to an ongoing sustaining membership today.

Eventually, we know there will be a budget for the state of Illinois, and we hope it maintains the commitments that have been established for public broadcasting throughout the years. No matter what

happens, though, we will continue to depend on our audience as our most reliable source for support.

As always, we thank you for your generous support of WSIU and look forward to continuing to serve you for many years to come.

A battle of wills between Republican Governor Bruce Rauner and the Democratic legislative majorities saw Illinois go months without a state budget in place for fiscal year 2016. On a special edition of ILLINOIS LAWMAKERS, series host Jak Tichenor talks with lawmakers and veteran Statehouse observers about the complex web of issues and personalities that led to the budget crisis and how it may impact the state for many years to come.

Sponsor Spotlight I’m LouAnn Elwell of Southpass Beads, and I’m growing WSIU. I love WSIU-TV, and watch it all the time. I really like NOVA, American Experience, Expressions, Antiques Roadshow, and of course, Beads, Baubles & Jewels. I’m amazed at all the wonderful programming on all the stations and feel very lucky to be able to watch CREATE and WORLD, as well. Everyone should support public radio and public TV. There would be a huge void in our lives without it!”
