Very Excited to Finish Fifth It isn’t often that an organization makes a big deal about finishing fifth place in any rankings. But we’re feeling pretty good about where PBS finished in the 2013-14 TV season because it means you like more of what you’re seeing.
PBS finished fifth among all broadcast and cable networks in household ratings with a 1.5 rating for the period September 20132014, according to the Nielsen ratings company. That represents a 5% increase compared with our average primetime household rating of 1.43 during the comparable September 2012-2013 period where PBS ranked eighth. During the comparable period in 2011-2012, PBS finished eleventh. Of course, 30 years ago, a 1.5 rating would have been nothing to crow about, but much has changed in 30 years. Now the highest rated TV show (The Walking Dead) airs on a cable channel (AMC) that wasn’t even in existence back in 1984.
Two big reasons for PBS’ success in the past year were, of course, Downton Abbey and The Roosevelts. Downton Abbey has been building audience for four seasons and averaged 13.2 million viewers during season four. The Roosevelts debuted September 14, 2014 and gave PBS its highest-rated week since 1994. More than 33 million people sampled at least some part of The Roosevelts and on average 9.2 millions viewers watched each of the seven nights, making it the third highest rated Ken Burns film, following The Civil War and Lewis and Clark. We don’t usually track numbers this closely in public television because we don’t sell our ratings for commercial advertising. But the next time you hear somebody ask, “Why do we need public television now that we have cable or satellite, or the internet?”, you can honestly reply that more and more people are watching PBS every year. And you can see even more reasons why in this issue of Previews with 20 new hours of Masterpiece coming this spring, including Grantchester and Wolf Hall.
So where does that leave PBS in modern-day ratings? Both Downton Abbey and The Roosevelts drew audiences greater than Breaking Bad, and lower than The Walking Dead. Right between a high school chemistry teacher turned drug dealer and a zombie apocalypse. Can’t decide if Teddy Roosevelt would have been proud or not. Of course, if social media had existed back in Teddy’s day, I dare say he might have won that election in 1912 – #runwiththebullmoose.

Veteran WSIU Staff Member Renee Dillard Retires With a mix of happiness (for her) and sorrow (for us), WSIU says goodbye and best wishes to longtime employee RENEE FERRELL DILLARD, who retired at the end of November after nearly 23 years of service to SIU Carbondale and the WSIU stations.
Dillard, a two-time graduate of SIU Carbondale with a B.A. in Art and a Ph.D in Resource Planning & Renee Dillard. Photo: Provided. Management, began her career at SIU first at the Office of Economic and Regional Development. In January of 1992, she was hired by WSIU as Director of Marketing, Grants Development, and Paralegal Services, a position in which she coordinated local and national data collection and market research, grants development, and project management. As WSIU worked throughout the years to align with national trends and local needs, Dillard’s responsibilities also evolved to include special events, major gifts development, station marketing and promotions, website development and management, oversight of all development activities, and most recently the development of a dedicated corporate support department.
At WSIU, Dillard wrote or co-wrote over $5.2 million successful competitive grant applications from federal, state, private, and nonprofit sources; created the Leadership Circle Program; and generated over $200,000 in major gifts and $2.6 million in corporate support. She also served on the SIU Office of Research and Development Administration Advisory Committee and the SIU Integrated Marketing Team, and was invited to serve as national grants reviewer by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), the National Center for Outreach, and the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Additional professional roles include serving on the National Center for Outreach Advisory Board and presenting sessions at the PBS Development Conference, the National Center for Outreach Conference, and the Public Media Development and Marketing Conference. Dillard’s innovative leadership has garnered national recognition. In 1993, a grants development model she created was selected by CPB for distribution across the public broadcasting system. She was also honored with the PBS Development Award for Special Gifts Fundraising (1996), Minnesota Public Radio National Integrated Media Fellowship Award for web design and management (2002), and the PRADO Development Professional of the Year (2014).
“I believe with all my heart that public broadcasting is crucial to the educational, cultural, and civic health of this country,” says Dillard. “As I look back, I think public radio and public television have become more important, not less, as our world becomes more fragmented and divided. No matter how you connect with it, through the radio or a TV set, a computer or mobile device, the integrity and intelligence of the information in unparalleled. Period. I can’t imagine being without public broadcasting in our own household, and it has been incredibly rewarding to be part of it.”

Masterpiece Presents Season Five of Downton Abbey Expect season five of DOWNTON ABBEY on MASTERPIECE to follow plot threads left dangling from last season, including Lady Mary’s courtship contest, Lady Edith’s trials as a secret single mom, Thomas’s scheming against Bates, Robert’s battles against modernity, Tom’s quest to be true to his ideals, and Violet’s zingers.

A recurring theme at Downton Abbey is change, from the wrenching consequences of the Titanic disaster in Season 1 to a notorious automobile accident at the end of Season 3 – plus, WWI, women’s rights, and the new morals, inventions, and fashions of the 1920s.

Season five opens in 1924. The United Kingdom has its first Labor Party prime minister, the radio is the latest miracle of the age, and Downton’s traditional ways are besieged on all fronts, as evidenced by this exchange between head housekeeper, Mrs. Hughes, and butler, Mr. Carson: “We’re catching up, Mr. Carson. Whether you like it or not, Downton is catching up with the times we live in,” says the forward-thinking Mrs. Hughes. “That’s exactly what I’m afraid of!” Carson retorts. Don’t miss the fun!

Expressions Returns for Fourth Season Thursdays 9pm

Lincoln Laureates 2014 THURSDAY, JANUARY 1 « 9PM
Beginning February 12 WSIU-TV’s local art series EXPRESSIONS returns for a fourth season beginning on Thursday, February 12.
Executive produced by Rajvee Subramanian (above, photo by Monica Tichenor), a doctoral student in SIU’s College of Mass Communication & Media Arts, the interview series showcases regional artists both at work and on the Expressions set where they discuss their work, influences, and inspiration with host Najjar Abdul-Musawwir, an acclaimed painter and Professor of Art in the SIU Carbondale School of Art & Design. New this season is a partnership with Carbondale Community Arts, says Subramanian, which has helped to expand the pool of available artists for Expressions. “In addition to featuring artists from Carbondale, Murphysboro, Herrin, Marion, and Makanda, we’re reaching out farther to other towns in our broadcast region, like Cape Girardeau, Paducah, and Mt. Vernon.”
Season four also marks the last year Subramanian will serve as executive producer of the series. He will graduate with his Ph.D. in May and plans to pursue a career in either television production or academia. “Expressions has been a rewarding experience for me,” says Subramanian. “The best thing about this job as a producer is I get paid to have fun. I’ve had the unique opportunity to meet some excellent artists and individuals from around the region.” Subramanian is quick to praise his supervisor, TV & Video Services Director Darryl Moses, for providing consistent professional oversight of the series.
“Darryl is detail-oriented and screens all potential artists before we shoot,” says Subramanian. “He is always there with professional guidance. Many times when we are faced with technical glitches, Darryl comes to our rescue. We also have a great student crew that helps set up in the studio and with production and post-production duties.” Subramanian says he’s proud to have been part of a series that introduces viewers to some of the most brilliant and creative artists at work in the region.
“We strive to give 100% to each episode, so our viewers have the best possible experience. I hope our commitment to excellence shows in each episode.”

A capacity crowd participates in a discussion of the Independent Lens film Evolution of a Criminal.
People from all walks of life gathered at Carbondale Public Library in November for WSIU’s COMMUNITY CINEMA screening of the Independent Lens film, Evolution of a Criminal. African American director Darius Clark Monroe explores what led him to pull a bank heist as a teenager in Texas and returns to the scene of the crime in this intimate and personal film. A large, dedicated group participated in the screening to inform and enrich social programs such as the 3R’s: Reading Reduces Recidivism, prison ministry, and local education systems. Participants shared their impressions on camera and through surveys, including one individual who gained “deeper understanding of the economic and educational factors related to these issues”. Another guest expressed optimism about “community activism and mentorship” as a result of the program and discussion.
A guest shares personal observations and insights about the film’s themes during a group discussion.
WSIU Promotions Graduate Assistant Kate West (far left) poses with panelists Najjar Abdul-Musawwir, Yolonde Simon, and Christopher Mullins (left-right).

PBS KIDS Digital Curriculum Inspires Integrated Engagement Boucher. “I include in-the-field interviews with hikers and others to share their experiences of the natural world. Since Plum Landing involves getting kids and adults to explore nature together, I thought a companion radio piece using material gathered from WSIU’s outreach event would fit in quite nicely.”

PLUM LANDING, a new multimedia indooroutdoor science exploration resource from PBS KIDS, was the catalyst for WSIU to begin an integrated engagement campaign that will continue through spring. To help launch the website at pbskids.org/ plumlanding, WSIU’s outreach assistant Sara Blackstad organized a digital hike with families. Participants enjoyed computer games in SIU Carbondale’s New Media Center and an interpretive walk through Thompson Woods on campus on a beautiful autumn day. Radio/ TV/Digital Media student Kristopher Lewis of Mascoutah videotaped the digital hike and created a short feature about the experience, which is available at wsiu.org/educators.
In addition to the SIRIS feature, which aired in December, WSIU is extending our partnership with Shawnee National Forest and developing a panel presentation about public media resources for the annual conference of the Environmental Education Association of Illinois, to be held at Touch of Nature in Makanda on April 9-11. The video, photos, and other local materials will be used by WGBH, the creator of Plum Landing, to develop a national case study for distribution to public media stations later this year.
“Since I always enjoy spending time outdoors, I produce a weekly program featuring news about the animal world and astronomy,” says

KEVIN BOUCHER & THE WSIU ALMANAC WSIU Radio welcomes Kevin Boucher, former TV Traffic Manager for WSIU-TV, as the new WSIU Radio Community Engagement Producer and the host of WSIU Almanac. This new radio segment airs twice daily, five days per week, and is a combination of daily national news reports and both current and historical local community pieces. If you miss a broadcast, you can listen online at news.wsiu.org/programs/wsiu-almanac. Each episode is designed to create awareness about events happening around the region and to give a voice to groups and individuals who are working to better their communities and the environment. Recent guests include Patty Cosgrove, a Carbondale Toys for Tots Coordinator, who discussed the volunteer group’s annual holiday toy drive. In addition to the WSIU Almanac, Boucher hosts segments focused on nature, including a recent story about winter birds featuring Laraine Wright of the Southern Illinois Audubon Society. Learn more about these segments, and access WSIU Almanac, at news.wsiu.org/people/kevin-boucher. Boucher was born in Newport, Rhode Island to a military family and spent time around the Washington, D.C. area. Interestingly, his passion for nature began not far from our nation’s capitol – Theodore Roosevelt Island – where he saw his first snake and snapping turtle. The family traveled around the world for his father’s career, including living in Japan, before they settled in Murphysboro, Illinois in 1976. Boucher fell in love with the natural beauty of southern Illinois and said he favors it over all the places he lived during his time as a young world traveler. Boucher earned a Bachelor’s degree in Radio-Television from SIU Carbondale and worked as a disc jockey before joining the
WSIU-TV staff in 1995 as the TV Traffic Manager. During his tenure at WSIU, he decided to complete a Master’s Degree in Professional Media Studies. As part of his thesis project, he created a 15-minute radio documentary entitled Sounds and Stories of the Shawnee Forest, which took him into the woods with a microphone to record nature and interview people about their outdoor experiences. “When it comes to nature, I never want to stop learning”, says Boucher, citing his curiosity and his passion for the outdoors and media as excellent motivators. When asked about specific goals in his new role at WSIU Radio, Boucher said he hopes to inspire people to take time for nature and to learn something new, even if it takes them outside of their comfort zone. “I want to encourage people to take time from their busy lives to get out in nature and to experience all the benefits it has to offer,” he says. He also wants to encourage people not to let their age prevent them from pursuing a different path in life. “I was 51-years-old when I earned my Master’s degree!” he says. “You’re never too old to learn.” In his spare time, Boucher enjoys being with family, honing his photography skills, and naturally, exploring the abundant and diverse wildlife and plant life around Campus Lake, and in the region’s many parks and wild natural areas. If you’d like to contact Boucher with story or segment ideas, send an email message to kevin.boucher@wsiu.org or call (618) 453-4348.
