A Variety of Programming... A Variety of Gifts One of the things people enjoy most about WSIU is our wide variety of offerings. We provide programs for children, teens, adults, parents, and seniors. We broadcast radio and television on a multitude of channels now including three radio services (WSIU, WSIU HD2, and the Southern Illinois Reading Information Service), three television channels (WSIU, WSIU World, and WSIU Create), and our multi-media website at wsiu.org.
Funding for these services comes through a variety of avenues, as well, including Southern Illinois University Carbondale, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the Illinois Arts Council…and you.
WSIU receives substantial support from individuals and businesses throughout our region that make contributions in support of programming and operations. These gifts come in a wide variety of amounts and at various times throughout people’s lives. Some give annually or semi-annually during our on-air support campaigns. Some give in response to letters we send, providing timely opportunities to invest in WSIU. For some a comfortable gift is $10 each year while for others it is $10 each month. Regardless of the level, we are grateful for all gifts as they help WSIU achieve its mission of service to the region. Through the wonders of electronic banking and the complexity of the tax code, we are seeing a rise in two other methods of giving. Supporters are now making sustaining commitments to WSIU via automatic monthly bank transfer. Electronic funds transfer (or EFT) allows advocates to establish regular monthly giving to WSIU without writing a check or posting to a credit card. Once an EFT is begun, the gift continues for as long as the donor wishes. It can be increased, paused, or changed at any time at the individual’s discretion. Another area where we are seeing increasing interest by supporters is planned giving. Individuals establish gifts involving portions of their estates that will benefit both WSIU and the donor. You may be familiar with phrases like charitable gift annuity, charitable remainder trust, or bequest. These are all options to help individuals achieve personal financial goals while making a transformational gift to WSIU. At first glance these may sound intimidating, but often times donors find a planned gift option that is the right fit at the right time. The story of Anne Hill (see adjacent) is our most recent shining example. We all come to depend on public broadcasting at different times in our lives and our giving varies depending on personal circumstance. At WSIU, we’re thankful to play such an important role in improving the quality of life for the people we serve.

A DEEPLY ROOTED DEVOTION TO THE ARTS
By Greg Scott, Assoc. Dir., SIU Foundation, for SIU Alumni Magazine. Edited for WSIU.
[Longtime SIU and WSIU supporter] ANNE HILL has invited the Free Range Chicks, a local trio, to sing at her 99th birthday party next month. She’s a regular supporter of music and the arts, having helped to establish the Southern Illinois Chamber Music Society and funding the SIU School of Music’s first cash prize for student composers, named for her uncle, Carl Deis, a musician in his own right.
Anne Hill (center) is presented with After Hill retired from SIU in 1981, an award for her support of the she continued her active membership McLeod Summer Playhouse Series in several local community and Carbondale Community Arts organizations. Hill, a 1986 SIU (CCA) by Thomas Kidd (left) of SIU Theater and Nancy Stemper Carbondale English alumna, wrote (right) of the CCA. Photo: CCA. and circulated newsletters for three separate organizations over 12 years. She served on the WSIU Friends Board and was a contributor in converting WSIU-TV to a digital broadcast, and provided funding for essential purchases for Morris Library and Carbondale Public Library.
“My grandfather emigrated here – he played trombone in the New York Symphony – because America needed music and musicians. This is still the case; we need to build audiences too,” she says. “I continue to enrich my own life in this community because I have made wonderful friends through the programs we have been able to serve in and support.”
Hill is making sure these programs enjoy long-standing support. When she sold her house recently, Hill put the majority of the proceeds in a charitable gift annuity through the SIU Foundation. Her gift will provide funds for WSIU Public Broadcasting, McLeod Theater Playhouse, SIU’s Chamber Music Society, and the Carl Deis Composer Prize, in addition to student scholarships. She envisions this option as a way to continue her major support of music and the arts, in addition to receiving additional income. Her charitable gift annuity contract with the SIU Foundation provides Hill with a charitable income tax deduction, as well as an income stream for life.
Hill, who now lives in a Carbondale retirement village, says she gathered home improvement concepts from This Old House on WSIU-TV. She is also a loyal listener to classical music on WSIU Radio and is a member of WSIU’s Leadership Circle. “For me, commitment to something goes beyond just being a member,” she says. “This Old House gave me so many ideas. I’m always intrigued by the process of making things work.” Her residence features art she has collected over the years, and she is making plans to donate her art to the University Museum. “Anne Hill has supported the University in an extraordinary fashion”, says Greg Petrowich, executive director of WSIU Public Broadcasting. “She truly understands the importance of public broadcasting, and cultural events and activities in our region.”
Hill’s family has been deeply rooted in music for generations. “Music was a big part of my upbringing.” she says. “The arts – whether it’s music, theater, or libraries – are essential in the development of young people.” Hill is enjoying retirement and doesn’t appear to be slowing down anytime soon. “I have plans to keep myself busy. We’re not here to just fold up.”
If you are interested in learning more about a charitable gift annuity in support of the WSIU stations, contact Pat Moline at (618) 453-4947 or visit the SIU Foundation’s website at www.siufgiving.org.

Tue, April 28 • 8 -10pm ABOUT THE FILM During the chaotic final days of the Vietnam War, as the North Vietnamese Army closed in on Saigon, the South Vietnamese resistance crumbled. The United States had only a skeleton crew of diplomats and military operatives still in the country. With a communist victory inevitable and the U.S. readying to withdraw, many Americans on the ground worried their South Vietnamese allies and friends faced imprisonment or death at the hands of the approaching North Vietnamese. With the clock ticking and the city under fire, a number of heroic Americans took matters into their own hands in order to save as many South Vietnamese as possible. Produced by Rory Kennedy, this extraordinary film includes footage of intense interviews with U.S. servicemen and Vietnamese civilians, brought to life with unprecedented detail.

ABOUT THE FILM
Directed by award-winning filmmaker Barak Goodman and executive produced by Ken Burns (photo above), this three-part, six-hour documentary is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer by Siddhartha Mukherjee, M.D.
CANCER: EMPEROR OF ALL MALADIES is part of a comprehensive national engagement campaign and an interactive website at CancerFilms.org that features short films showcasing the stories of cancer patients, caregivers, researchers, and survivors. Each episode explores the “biography” of cancer, from its first documented appearances thousands of years ago through the epic battles in the 20th century to cure, control, and conquer it, with the goal of stripping away some of the fear and misunderstanding that has long surrounded the disease.

Caught in the Sweep of History: Egypt in the Civil War – The Second Year
Thursday, April 9 9:30-10pm
(repeats 4/10, 5pm; 4/12, 1:30pm)
The second installment of this five-part series from the Illinois Humanities Council tells the story of 19 Southern Illinois counties during the second year of the Civil War, focusing less on the battlefields and more on the individuals who fought and the families they left behind.
The second year of the Civil War in the West was a time of consolidating victories and positioning armies for the great battles that came in 1863. President Lincoln called for additional troops and the federal government expanded in its effort to win the war. Thousands of new troops entered the Union Army only to quickly learn that disease was more likely to take their lives than the Rebels. It was a year when southern Illinoisans not only sacrificed the lives of loved ones but, in their minds, lost their Constitutional rights to a federal government’s enactment of income tax and indiscriminate arrests. Co-written by David Rush, P. Michael Jones, and Bert Hinchman and produced by Richard Kuenneke. Funding for the project is provided by a grant from the Illinois Humanities Council, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Illinois General Assembly.

Photo: John Poole NPR. six-episode pilot series explores how people’s lives are shaped – and sometimes even controlled – by ideas and feelings that are powerful and rarely examined. Co-hosted by Lulu Miller and Alix Spiegel, who helped create Radiolab and This American Life, Invisibilia interweaves narrative storytelling and new psychological and brain science in a way that ultimately makes you see your own life differently. Each episode is available as a podcast and online at npr.org/ invisibilia and nprinvisibilia.tumblr.com. COMING IN MARCH
MARCH 6, 8PM | How to Become Batman examines the surprising effect that our expectations can have on the people around us. You’ll hear how people’s expectations can influence how well a rat runs a maze. Plus, the story of a man who is blind and says expectations have helped him see.
MARCH 13, 8PM | In Entanglement, you’ll meet a woman with Mirror Touch Synesthesia who can physically feel what she sees others feeling. Discover the ways in which all of us are connected – more literally than you might realize. The hour will start with physics and end with a conversation with comedian Maria Bamford and her mother who discuss what it’s like to be entangled through impersonation.
New Music Series Joins WSIU Radio Lineup! SUNDAYS 2-4AM, 10PM-MIDNIGHT If you meet James “Skyy Dobro” Walker or D’Arcy “Shuffle Shoes” Ballinger (photo above) in person, don’t mention the Blues, unless you want to talk for awhile. The word alone spreads a grin across their faces and triggers an infectious energy that shoots from their eyes. They’ll speak of forgotten legends like J.B. Hutto and Sonny Boy Williamson, current “unknown” favorites like Kid Ramos and Too Slim and the Taildraggers, and regional standouts like “Mondo” Cortez’s Chicago Blues Angels and the Kilborn Alley Blues Band. Photo: WKCC
FRIENDS OF THE BLUES presents classic artists you may already know, as well as new and emerging artists. “We are not going to be stuffy… what we try to do is get down to all listeners’ levels, from beginners to aficionados. We want to let them know we truly love them and the music,” say the hosts who truly know the artists, the labels, the recordings, and the band members. They also do a good amount of traveling to live blues performances throughout the United States. Packing in about 15 cuts per hour, Friends of the Blues allows the music to do the talking. The series is produced from the studios of WKCC, on the campus of Kankakee Community College in Kankakee Ill.
