Fashion Love Affair This love affair started five years ago when I decided that it was time to create a platform to feature works of local artists who thrived in the Spokane/Coeur d’Alene area. Five years ago, there was a thriving small community of creatives who were excited about the possibilities of creating art through the medium of photography. Local aspiring models as well as photographers, hair and make up artists, teamed up with local clothing and accessories designers and shared their work through the only avenue that was open to them -- facebook. This resulted in a small community that started to grow and flourish. Back then, I was shooting for a local lifestyle magazine and the “holy grail” then was having your work featured on its pages. Alas, the focus of the magazine was more on lifestyle and less on fashion where the small community wanted to make an impact on. It was then that I decided that the local community needed a platform to showcase their work. The goal was to provide a platform for models, photographers, designers, hair and make up artists, and most everyone involved in the local fashion community to get much needed exposure to a wider audience far beyond the confines of the local scene.

Starting a magazine is easy. Sustaining it for at least a year is quite a challenge. But sustaining it and keeping it relevant and growing, attests to the vision and the support of the small community of believers. Indeed, it has been quite a challenge figuring out content on a monthly basis. But there is no shortage of creative talent in this area. Some have moved on to hopefully bigger and greater things by physically moving to areas that are the more natural locations for the fashion industry in the hopes of catching and riding that big wave. A few have been quite successful in their pursuit of their dreams. What sustains this love affair is the passion and creativity of several in the community who continue to hone and sharpen their skills and talents. It hasn’t been all smooth sailing of course. There have been some rough patches and there have been quite a few critics who are quite vocal about their opinions. As we move on looking forward to another five more years (and hopefully more!), the hope is that the platform continues to get recognition and love in terms of readership and subscriptions.

This magazine wasn’t the first on the scene to feature local fashion but it continues on year after year and this month, we are celebrating five years or existence.

Because in order to sustain this endeavor, we have finally decided that the free-mium model needs to transition to a subscription model that will provide some revenue that will hopefully pay for contrbutors.

None of these would have been possible without the continued support of people in the local community (and beyond) who believe in this work.

The first five years were focused on growing the reader base and getting the brand established. The next five years will focus on the economic aspect. Ten years from now, we hope that WTF! fashion magazine will become a household name around the world.
