All About That Lace The Royals love lace. Lace and royal weddings do go hand in hand. It is a symbol of status and prestige. It originated in Europe in the 1500s and Spain, Italy, Belgium, France, and Germany all lay claim the honor of its origins. The nuns with their needles started what was then known as cutwork or “nun’s work” where this art was historically practiced in the convents located in Central and Southern Europe. Back then, the term “lace” was used to refer to the cords that “laced” a garment together. By the time the 16th century arrived, these became larger and more complex. By the fashion embraced this handcrafted art as most everything was created with it from cuffs, and collars to headpieces. As the 17th century rolled in, tastes changed and less and less clothing was made of lace. Clothing made from lace was so expensive since the market for it was small. From then on cost continued to shape the design and production of lace. As technology advanced into the 19th century, machinemade lace replaced the handiwork of lace craftsmen. Even today, any article of clothing that is classic and has a touch of glamour incorporates lace in its design. In fact, there is a lace for any type of garment or occasion. Women, even those who are not of royal stock, love it so much because it is romantic, ultra feminine, and classic. We combine these feminine features with the beauty of nature in the wintry backdrop of the Inland Northwest with our Ukranian cover girl, Alla Radchenko and a look at Timbre Wolf’s winter collection with Kimberly Rose Givan in the same location. How can you resist not shooting on a frozen lake with these fashionable dresses?
It’s our first issue of the New Year -- 2017 and as always we are on the lookout for new faces and new artists to feature. Next month we will be celebrating our 5th year of existence! We look forward to this coming year to come up with interesting ideas and concepts that reflect cultural and fashion sensibilities. Some of these are Love and Lust, Virtue and Vice, Rebellion and Revolution as well as period fashion from the fifties, sixties, seventies, eighties, and the nineties. Hopefully, we’ll find more lace creations in our journey to make it the overarching theme for the year because you really can never have too much lace! Lace is timeless and endures throughout fashion history. From its humble beginnings in the convents in the 15th century, it has been embraced by royals who seek to preserve it as a status symbol. Ronnie Ryno dreamt of a runway show for budding alternative designers and models and ten years ago, Runway Renegades was born. Like lace, it has stood the test of time and has been growing and getting better every year. 2017 marks the 10th anniversary of this runway fashion show that showcases local designers, local hair and make up artists, and local models. If you are looking for a platform to showcase your designs as a budding designer or you know of someone who is interested, the deadline for signing up is January 15, 2017. Head over to www. runwayrenegades.com and fill up a designer application for the September 16, 2017 show at the Spokane Convention Center and become a part of a grassroots movement that has made an impact in the local fashion community that dreams big. We wish you all a Happy New Year! Make a difference in your sphere of influence.
