The F word Aloha and Mahalo Words are powerful. In Hawaiian thinking, words have manna meaning spiritual or divine power. Aloha and Mahalo are two important words to learn, both of which represent sacred and powerful principles and values in Hawaiian life. Aloha means affection, peace, compassion, and mercy. It is to be used with sincerity of heart. Understanding the meaning of Aloha gives us a better glimpse of Hawaiian life -- where the family (ohana) and connections of the heart are important. Mahalo means thanks, gratitude, admiration, praise, esteem, regards, and respect. Life in Hawaii is definitely slower paced than life in the mainland US. It is a more relaxed atmosphere where people are more in tune with the nature and their surroundings. During weekends in Maui, people flock to the beach to camp and surf. Almost all of Maui’s residents surf in some shape or form. And you’ve probably seen the popular “shaka” sign at some point in your travels. For the uninitiated, the shaka is a hand sign formed with the thumb and pinky finger extended out and the rest of the fingers curled. It is a symbol of the Aloha spirit. So with this, we introduce our 3rd annual swimwear issue with 25 models showing off their beach-ready bodies for the summer swim season. We also give you a glimpse of vacation spots where you can show off your swimsuit and what better location to start off with than in the island of Maui in Hawaii. The island of Maui is the second-largest of the Hawaiian Islands at 727.2 square miles and is the 17th largest island in the United States. Maui is part of the State of Hawaii and is the largest of Maui County's four islands, bigger than Molokaʻi, Lānaʻi, and unpopulated Kahoʻolawe.

One thing to remember about traveling to Maui is to make sure that you’re not bringing in or out any prohibited items such as fruit and nuts, and of course you must resist the temptation to poach a bit of sand from its beaches. As any traveler will tell you “take nothing from your trip other than memories and photos”. After Maui, the second recommended vacation spot to take your swimsuit to and show it off is Los Cabos in Mexico or Cabo for short. Where else can you find beer and spirits right as you step out of the arrival area at the airport? There are many great deals online for Cabo which boast of all-inclusive amenities including wine and meals. And if you’re angling for just a weekend getaway and you live in the Pacific Northwest area, you can drive to Cannon Beach which is a popular destination. The temps aren’t as hot as Cabo or Maui but the views and the beaches are worth the trip. Of course we can’t forget any of the beaches in California so we’ve included Santa Cruz boardwalk as another spot to show off your perfectly-toned body wearing one of UjENA’s swimsuits. After all, UjENA is based in Northern California. Finally, if you’re local to the area (meaning Spokane and/or Coeur d’Alene or thereabouts), a visit to Priest Lake is a must. It is Idaho’s crown jewel. The lake is beautiful and it’s less crowded than the other surrounding lakes. Of course you can’t beat Lake Coeur d’Alene in the beautiful town of Coeur d’Alene because it’s the best kept secret! And with this issue we greet you with much affection because without your support and participation, we would not be as successful. This is our 3rd annual summer swimwear issue with the participation of UjENA swimwear of Mountain View CA providing the suits for local models to wear. Each year we pick several women to represent our brand as well as the UjENA brand of swimwear. And each year, each summer swimwear issue gets better and better. Mahalo for your support!

Maui is paradise! If you only have a few days to spend in Maui you will need to maximize your visit and prioritize the places you want to see. The best strategy is to fly in on an early flight and leave on a late flight. This gives you time to drive up to Haleakala National Park to wait for the sunrise. Don’t forget to bring warm clothing especially gloves to prevent your hands from freezing. That’s right, when you’re 10,000 ft above sea level it will be cold. The drive is an hour up winding roads. Hotels are quite expensive but you can find great deals on airbnb.com for places to stay. All beaches in Maui are accessible to the public but for some, parking presents quite a challenge especially if you’re looking to visit Ka’anapali Beach. Catching the sunset is a must and one of the best places to do that is on Ka’anapali Beach and you can park at the Royal Lahaina Resort. A day trip could consist of driving through Kihei and grabbing lunch at the popular Coconut’s Fish Cafe. The fish tacos are served with 17 ingredients and are made to eat with your hands. From there take a drive to the historic old whaling town of Lahaina and enjoy the art by the Banyan Tree. You’ll need a second day trip to enjoy Napili beach and Kapalua beach. Enjoy lunch and a great view of the ocean and Molokai island at Merriman’s. It’s a pricey restaurant but well worth it. After lunch head over to see the Nakalele Blowhole. There are no signs so find it on the map first and pay attention so you won’t miss it. Don’t miss out on the chance to see the famous green sea turtles at Ho’okipa beach park with lunch at Mama’s Fish House on the way to the airport to boot!

CABO SAN LUCAS, MEXICO

Cabo San Lucas Where else can you get off the plane and step out of the arrival area and get a cold drink of beer or liquour? Where else but the Los Cabos International Airport? Yes you heard that right because as soon as you step out into the heat you’ll definitely want a cold one. Before you arrive at the airport, you will need to make reservations for your trip to Cabo San Lucas which is 35 minutes via car so that you’re not stuck at the airport haggling and paying extra. If you’re not into haggling or you’re bad at it better do your homework and get your reservations for a taxi in place before you arrive. You don’t need to rent a car unless you plan on driving all over the place. Most hotels in Cabo San Lucas are pretty well contained and everything you will need is provided at the hotel from meals, drinks, and entertainment. You can walk to downtown Cabo if you stay in the area of the Casa Dorada Hotel. If you’re into shopping you can go to the Puerto Paraiso Mall and come right out to the Marina. Make sure to turn on your wifi instead of using cellular service unless you want to pay an arm and a leg. The good news is that almost every place in Cabo has wifi. It may not be fast but it will meet your social media needs while you’re in town. You can get around town by hopping on a local taxi and you can pay $10 in US currency for each person. Friday nights are party nights and you’ll see almost everyone partying in town in the many clubs.

Cannon Beach If you’re from the Pacific Northwest, a drive to Cannon Beach is a must for a weekend getaway. Depending on where you’re coming from, you might want to take a short trip to Multnomah Falls which is to the east of Portland. The best way to enjoy Cannon Beach is to be right by the beach/ocean. The Waves at Cannon Beach is a really nice place to stay. Rent one of the condos by the ocean to get a close up view of the beach. From there you can walk on the beach towards Haystack Rock. It’s quite a distance and you will need to bring some warm clothing and some blankets to keep you warm. There are many eating places in town as well as many art galleries to enjoy local art. Drive to Ecola State Park and take a hike through the beautiful woods if this is your cup of tea and enjoy the scenic views including a view of the Tillamook Rock Lighthouse. A trip to Portland wouldn’t be complete if you don’t go to the famous Voodoo donuts to enjoy their sweet offerings. Finish off the trip at the OMSI. Don’t miss a guided tour on the nuclear sub, the Blueback. If you’re adventurous and you want a close up view of a lighthouse, Cape Meares Lighthouse in Tillamook, OR gets you up and close and personal and you can even stop by the Tillamook Cheese Factory to enjoy ice cream and cheese. The drive is on the scenic byway on the 101 freeway and is about an hour and fifteen minutes.

SANTA CRUZ, CALIFORNIA Santa Cruz Boardwalk This is the oldest surviving oceanfront amusement park in California. It is admission free and people flock to it especially during the summer months so as with anything else in California, you best be prepared for traffic and good luck with finding parking and even trying to get out of the mess. But, it is truly a sight to behold and experience. The Boardwalk extends along the coast of the Monterey Bay, from just east of the Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf to the mouth of the San Lorenzo River. At the western edge of the park lies a large building originally known as The Plunge, Now Neptune’s Kingdom, which contains a video arcade, and indoor miniature golf course. Next to this is The Casino Fun Center which includes a laser tag arena and next to that (To the Right) is The Cocoanut Grove banquet room and conference center. If you’re flying in, I recommend flying in to the San Jose airport and renting a car to drive to Santa Cruz. It’s a 45 minute drive that will probably take longer considering the amount of traffic. If you have time or another day to spare continue your trip to Monterey Bay and finish it off on the 17 mile drive to Pebble Beach. You won’t regret it.

Priest Lake Idaho’s crown jewel is located in the northernmost portion of the Idaho Panhandle, 80 miles northeast of Spokane, Washington, with the northern end of the lake extending to within 15 miles (24 km) of the Canadian border. The primary lake, lower Priest, is 19 miles long and over 300 feet deep. Upper Priest is connected by a 2.5 mile thoroughfare to lower Priest. Elkins Resort in Nordman, ID is a must stop and having either lunch or dinner is a good experience. There is a day use area with an expanse of sandy beach complete with a beach volleyball court and there are cabins for rent for those who want to experience an overnight stay at the resort. Try the Mediterranean Platter or the French Dip along with the Huckleberry Lemonade or the Elkins Famous Huckleberry Daiquiri. Don’t stop there, make sure to go to Priest Lake State Park Lionhead Unit. It’s quite a drive but as with everything and anything worth experiencing, the drive is worth it since it’s a scenic drive as well. As with any adventure you could continue on a second day or even the same day to Sandpoint, ID which is another place worth visiting.
