The F word Nostalgia If you looked around at what people are wearing today and listened to “today’s music” at all, you will notice a predilection for everything that was in the past. There is a continuing obsession with emulating and copying elements from the past.
For this issue we approached several photographers whose work and artistic direction takes us back to those happy places evoking the feeling of nostalgia. We hope that you enjoy their work as much as we have enjoyed featuring them here.
If you’ve ever listened to Daft Punk’s song “Get Lucky”, you’d think that they are from the seventies and that they probably got their inspiration from Stevie Wonder. If you don’t know any of those names I mentioned then you must still be living underneath a rock.
Chris Wooley is a photographer who specializes in pin-up glamour photography. His work exhibits a distinctive style and love for the art. Pin-up is reminiscent of an art form from the past that is still alive and well today. Chris leverages his expertise and love for this art form by making the women of today feel glamorous through pin-up photography.
In fashion every decade starting from the 50s up to the 90s ushered in a wave of decade-defining looks that were unique to that decade. However, this pattern of creation seems to have stopped in the 2000s. Now, every year we hear about the resurgence and come back of either the sixties, the seventies, or the eighties, and even the nineties. The sixties brought us the hippie culture and you can clearly notice that today in boho chic fashion. The seventies brought us disco and a free for all in terms of fashion. The eighties brought us a whole spectrum of electro music and punk wardrobe. The nineties came with grunge, rave, and gangsta rap. With the continuing advancement of technology you’d think that we’d be reaching for new heights in creativity but it seems like it’s just so easy to copy and paste. Product designers have found that using nostalgia appeals to customer’s emotion and sentimentality. The reason it works is that it elicits a pleasurable feeling since the nostalgic feeling brings back memories of a better time. And that is what nostalgia is all about. It brings back a sentimental longing or wistful affection for the past, typically a period or place with happy personal associations.
Hannah Dare Walker’s passion for fashion and costuming was born out of a creative mind as a child and you can clearly see it in her handiwork with her amazing costumes and preparation for photo shoots with her daughter Miranda as her model. In this issue, we see but a glimpse of her artistic creativity as she teams up with daughter Miranda to take us back to the days of disco from the seventies. Brenda Cook has been obsessed with photography ever since she received her first camera at the tender age of ten years old. She finds her passion in expressing artistic creativity through stylized fantasy fashion-themed fine art. In this issue she teams up with model Amy Sherman showcasing a period when men and women still dressed in style in their daily life because well, it mattered to them as it should still matter to us. All three share the same passion for the art of photography and it shows in their dedication to their work. And finally, we reveal the winner of our cover girl contest. Emily Edmonds was chosen to be on the cover for this month’s issue.

My name is Chris Wooley. I’m a professional photographer based out of Spokane, WA. I specialize in Headshots and Pin-Up Photography. I’ve been pushing the shutter button for over 10 years now (don’t worry, I take breaks so my finger doesn’t get too tired). I’m lucky to be popular enough that I only do the types of photography that I truly love. People are awesome. I really enjoy bringing out their best face in a session. I’m also an educator. I teach classes and lead workshops. I write, blog, and help other photographers in the industry. I’m constantly working to make myself better and help others get better, too. I’m a Certified Professional Photographer, and a liaison for other photographers wanting to take their photography to the next level. I’m also the Vice-President Professional Photographers of Washington, and hold the Associate Fellow Photographer Degree from them. For Professional Photographers, I’ve also developed an iPad app for Doing In Person Sales – FathomFocus.

Nostalgia : Hannah Dare Walker Photography by: Hannah Dare Walker Model: Miranda Walker
I was raised, in Northern Idaho in a large hard working family. My childhood summers were spent working, gardening, canning and getting firewood for the winter. Growing up with limited resources causes you develop a creative imagination. Even as a child I have always loved fashion and costumes. I remember designing costumes out of cardboard and felt to dress up my sister’s for fun. My passion for creating has never left me, even as I went on to raise 5 children with my husband in the Puget Sound. Several years ago, I decided to rekindle my costuming passion with a ‘Lord of the Flies” theme photoshoot using my children. It was around this time that I came across Kirsty Mitchell and Alexia Sinclair’s beautiful costuming and photography work and I realized I wanted to do this for a career! I have not looked back since…my hobby has become a fulltime passion. When I am in my creative zone time has no meaning. The 100’s of hours spent creating costumes and planning photoshoots can seem like minutes. It is a true labor of love. My oldest daughter, Miranda Walker, is my model for many of my photoshoots. Why? Well for one she “was” free, lived at home for fittings, and would put up with my learning on the job. The fun we have had…”It is for the arts!” I tell her as she crawls thru the mud covered in paint. Miranda is now a senior at the University of Washington studying Micro Biology. She no longer lives at home but we still find the time to work, laugh and create magic “for the arts” together.

Nostalgia : Brenda Cook Photography by: Brenda Cook Model: Amy Sherman
I received my first Kodak 110 film camera when I was ten years old and have been obsessed with all things photography ever since. I am a native of Northern Idaho, graduate of the University of Idaho and a mother and wife. My passion for photography continues to be inspired daily by nature, my family and the amazing outdoor light and beauty that surrounds us, as well as, history and memories and interests shared with my late mother and grandmother. Although I practice all kinds of photography: nature, family, wedding, children’s portraits, babies and boudoir photography, I have a special interest and best express my artistic vision in stylized fantasy fashion themed fine art. I love to create and capture the uniqueness in all subjects and feel so blessed to be able to meet so many incredible people and do what I absolutely love and desire everyday.
