Good old Sir Alfred Hitchcock was a master of suspense and mystery. He preferred to use suspense to surprise. His movies were compelling not because of the stories but the way he tells the story which involves the audience in his film’s characters. He was very much aware that our minds constantly try to fill in the gaps when information is missing. And that our imaginations often run wild because our minds are wired to be happy and when information is missing we tend to fill in the blanks to satisfy this need to be happy. Who doesn’t love a good mystery? Spies, angelic beings, mermaids, phantoms and the proverbial wolf in the forest all fascinate us. We have all of those and more in this issue. And speaking of the big bad wolf, have you ever wondered who the real wolf is? Let me unpack a few mysteries for you... Bed and Breakfast If you’re looking for a great place to stay in town (Spokane, WA) look no further. It’s no mystery that the only remaining B&B in Spokane is the 1899 House (http://1899house.com/). Owners Louie Flores III and Gillian Cranehahn are great hosts and the place has a lot of associated history that you will want to check out when you book your stay. Of course we were quite fortunate to be able to shoot some fashionable looks at this historic B&B.

In this issue we are excited to introduce a new feature from local model Dani Lundquist of Lucid Roots. Dani is an accomplished and successful model who has worked in New York, LA,and the international circuit. Find out about her story and her latest passion in Fashionably Fed.

Continuing on the success of our feature on movers and shakers of the local fashion community, we paid a visit to Lynne Rossman Blackwood of Blackwood Art Clothing & Accessories who has participated in two of the most successful runway shows in Spokane. Local Events Runway Renegades just completed its 8th runway show to benefit a local charity -- Blessings Under The Bridge and Beyond Pink just raised thousands of dollars for women who cannot afford breast thermography, a technology that gives women a fighting chance in early breast cancer detection. Meanwhile, Terrain’s event combined a juried art show of rising artistic talent, along with exhibitions of nontraditional art forms and performances by the area’s top bands. Where does this all leave us? Nowadays, with social media, constant photos and blogging, we’re always up to date with everything and anything that goes on in the fashion world and there is no mystery left. “Little girls think it's necessary to put all their business on MySpace and Facebook, and I think it's a shame... In 2014, 1899 House Bed & Breakfast celebrated its 116th year. Originally called the Edward Louis Powell house, it was designed by famed builder and architect, Loren Rand and constructed in 1889. Its business name is the "1899 House Bed & Breakfast".

The house was built in a “restrained Queen Anne” style, for Spokane’s third mayor and his wife Dora, after he was no longer in office (he was a single-term mayor, as most are, from 1893-4). Its designer was then-well-known master architect, Loren Rand, who had designed many preeminent buildings throughout Spokane after the great fire of 1889, such as Lewis & Clark High School and the Masonic Temple. Their five children were born and raised in the home, and it remained in the family until the 1950’s. By 2009, the exterior was cleaned and ready to repaint, and the historic original color scheme had been approved. The interior was restored to four second-floor bedrooms, three with private baths, but needed floors and walls restored. The third floor’s one-bedroom apartment was also roughed-in, and holds the original claw-footed, cast iron tub. Gillian and Louie began renovating the second floor’s first suite, the Dora Room, in 2010, and opened to Bed & Breakfast guests in December of 2012; the Rigby Room followed in October of 2013, and use of the newly-restored Community Room, with its mid-century Kenmore kitchen, was added for guests’ convenience as well.

1899 House Renovations continue to the present day, with work inside shifting to the first floor’s west parlor and bath; and the main kitchen update is rising in priority. On the exterior, the entire building is primed; the west side was caulked and painted in 2013-14. The west porch entry has been completely rebuilt, and final paint also done by the end of 2014. The east side patio and garden have been worked on with fountain and seating restored to use. The south face front porch railings and columns were rebuilt in 2013, and thanks to our winning a Heritage Grant from the Spokane Preservation Advocates in November of 2013, the front entry steps and third floor's horseshoe balcony and front porch railings, columns and pedestals were restored by Vance and Steve from "A Painter's Touch". They also did the construction of the west guest entry porch, working with Architect Esteban Vallejo's design. That entry's Victorian paint was completed, thanks to Rebecca Trainor's talents. The PT team returned in July of 2015 and finished the front! 1899 House has been featured in the TV series -“If Walls Could Talk” Season 12 Episode 2 as well as the online series “Mr. Dark” episode 3.

LOCAL EVENTS RUNWAY RENEGADES This fashion runway show benefits Blessings Under The Bridge, a local charity providing food, clothing, and housing for the homeless. On its eight year, Runway Renegades features six teams headed by local clothing designers with supporting hair and make up artists and photographers for each team. BEYOND PINK This designer bra runway show raises funds for breast thermography to benefit women who cannot afford the technology for early breast cancer detection. This yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s show featured twelve bra design ensembles and raised a total of $153,414 that will benefit 557 women.

TERRAIN 8 This event combines a juried art show of rising artistic talent, along with exhibitions of non-traditional art forms and performances by the areaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s top bands. The show features 280+ art works, 140+ artists, 7 bands, 2 DJs, films and performances.

Two Women One Goal Beyond Pink is the result of two women who wanted to celebrate the technology called Thermography and its powerful ability to aid in the early detection of breast disease. Their goal, was not just to raise awareness, but to help provide funding for women who could not otherwise afford this potentially lifesaving procedure.

Pink for the Cause. GREEN FOR METHOD We are an education, fundraising, public charity that was started with the purpose of teaching others about thermography and providing women, who would not otherwise have it, the opportunity and funds for certified breast exams.

What is Thermography? A RISK ASSESSMENT PROCEDURE Thermography is a medical screening device for breast cancer and other breast disease using infrared detectors, commonly called infrared cameras. This procedure is non invasive and does not use radiation. It is complimentary to mammography and causes no harm to the patient. Thermography has been approved by the United States FDA since 1982 for the adjunctive screening of breast cancer. Recent studies have shown thermography to be effective with 90% sensitivity and specificity. Currently no single imaging tool is 100% accurate in the detection of breast cancer including thermography or mammography, but when used together the detection rate greatly increases. Beyond Pink is dedicated to providing information on breast thermography, risk assessment, early detection, prevention and ultimately the preservation of the breast and the survival of women.

Terrain is a non-profit in Spokane, WA dedicated to creating a stronger and more vibrant emerging arts community in the Inland Northwest. Always on the First Friday in October, Terrain is an annual, one-night-only, juried multimedia art and music event celebrating young and emerging artists in the Spokane area. Featuring over 200 works by more than 100 artists, and attracting thousands of attendees, it is a celebration of new energy and fresh ideas from all over the artistic spectrum. From painting to poetry to interactive art to film, Terrain tries to showcase a little of everything thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s happening to make the Inland Empire a more vibrant, cultural and beautiful place.

Dani Lundquist is a citizen of the world, a believer of magic, and a lover of all things food. You'll find her in tree pose in front of her stove, in the garden or enjoying a nice craft brew. You can also find her at https://www.facebook.com/getfedbelucid. For me, November represents a time of endings, beginnings and gratitude. This year especially. There is much to be thankful for, much to be excited for, and much to be happy to see come to a close. You see, I am fast approaching a birthday. A big one in fact, I will officially be closer to thirty and farther from the fresh-faced twenty year old walking the runways of New York. Part of that breaks my heart into a million pieces, leaving me missing a part of who I was but the other part has to be grateful for every second I’ve lived, every person I’ve meet and every experience that I’ve had. At almost twenty-six years old, I have lived quite a life. I’ve had a successful career in the fashion industry as an international high fashion model. I traveled the world filling passports. I’ve backpacked through countries many would never dare to visit. I’ve lived large, I loved often and I’ve laughed until it hurt.

As I approach my birthday, I also embark on a new adventure, a life in the kitchen. It’s beautiful how life leads you to where you need to be. My travels unveiled passions, inspiration and truths that I was yet to know. Every piece of the journey plays into the big picture. If I had never taken that move to Los Angeles at eighteen to follow a career in modeling, If I had never got on that plane to Tokyo, If I had never walked through the old city of Jerusalem, maybe I wouldn’t be here sharing my passion with you. I’m grateful for every moment because it has helped me discover who I am. Now that the leaves have fallen, the last harvest is being gathered and the earth is getting ready for hibernation, I realized it is not an ending, it is just another beginning.

As I work on this first segment of Fashionably Fed, I can’t help but feel grateful. Grateful for returning to the Pacific Northwest and finding true beauty in the place I grew up, for the amazing people the region holds, for the creativity, the passion, the positive shifts that we are all playing part of.

FASHIONABLY FED

Every positive action we make, really is making this world a better place. As you’ll see my form of action is food. So, as you get ready for your holiday meals, I ask you, please shop local, cook from scratch and thank your farmers for the love and nourishment they provide to you. Real food comes from somewhere and from someone. Make the connection and you might find yourself feeling gratitude for all that is around you. There really is magic in this world, from the first snow fall, to the bounty of pumpkins, to the laughter of your new baby nephew, the beauty is all around us. We just need to remember to notice.

November also represents the pumpkin frenzy. There is pumpkin everything; coffees, donuts, beer…You name it, I’m sure its been done. It’s even worse than the whole bacon thing. Bacon beer? No thanks…. Don’t get me wrong, I love pumpkin just as much as the next. The hearty, fleshy gift of the fall gods... oh yes, I am a big fan, of the real thing. Do you know most people have never prepared a fresh pumpkin? We are in abundance of beautiful fall squashes in our region. The farms are exploding and these beauties are just waiting to be taken home and prepared with love. Challenge yourself this fall and take advantage of the bounty. Try making your pumpkin pie from an actual pumpkin and not from a can, you will be surprised how gratifying it is. Skip the artificially, chemical laden pumpkin latte and make your own natural creamer at home. Truly the ideas are limitless when it comes to pumpkins, just thinking about it brings a warm glow to my soul. “Who are the people in your neighborhood?” Introducing: Lynn Blackwood Article by: Erinn Jennings Photography by: Raymund Morales Photography Q: How did you get into designing? A: I studied costume design when I was a theater major at WSU back in the 70’s. My intention was to be a professional actress but I also studied all the technical aspects of theater at the same time. I was fortunate enough to be able to make a living (more or less) in the theater for 20+ years because when if I couldn’t get acting work, I could get a design job because I had that skill set. 35 years later and after many re-inventions in my life and my art, I found myself in the unique position of being an “Over 50” bride and not being able to find anything that I thought was a) appropriate or b) ME to wear for my wedding. I went to a thrift store in Sandpoint Idaho, and bought a bunch of vintage tables cloths and doilies and made something (actually I made three dresses before I settled on one) to wear to get married in. The wedding happened, I moved to Spokane, and once I got here I thought “Gee, that was kind of fun. I haven’t sewn anything for years; maybe I will get back into it.” Even better, I was able to create something new and unique from old stuff just lying around in thrift stores. Maybe I could expand on that idea and keep all this stuff from ending up in the landfills at the same time.

Q: What is your philosophy of life and how has it impacted your art? A: My philosophy of life is pretty simple: love yourself first. Whatever it takes in your life to get there, do it. Then you have something of substance to give back to your community. The luckiest of us are able to do that in a way that involves art, creativity, a philanthropic attitude and lots of sweat equity. If you don’t have money to give back to your favorite charity or cause, then give of your time and talent. It will come back to you a thousand fold. MY mother taught me that and that has continued to be reinforced by the amazing network of folks I have the honor to be associated with here in Spokane. I find that real artists (no matter your chosen genre) really love to support and encourage other artists. They are able to celebrate others successes and in turn will find that they will be celebrated in return.

Q: What do you want to project with your craft? A: I want to empower people to discover and celebrate their truly unique style. “Style” and “Fashion” are not mutually exclusive. Or they shouldn’t be. My philosophy of “Style” has changed some over the years.

As far as fashion is concerned, the older I get the more I embrace the idea that I am done dressing for other people and only care to dress in a way that makes ME happy. If other people like it…that’s okay…if they don’t or if they think it’s inappropriate for my age, body type, occasion, whatever… that’s okay too. It doesn’t matter. I LOVE IT. So often I find that other women will say to me “I love what you’re wearing, I wish I could wear something like, that but I am too ________________.” Fill in the blank: to old, too short, too fat, to shy. The sheer joy of wearing something that you love will give you the confidence to pull it off successfully and look spectacular. And I say, “ROCK THAT LOOK, GIRL”.

Q: What current projects are you working on? A: We’re coming to the end of the year so things are (finally) slowing down a little. I am coming off a thrilling year having participated for the third year in RUNWAY RENEGADES which was produced this year at Northern Quest Casino as has so very successful on some many different levels. The producers, Ronnie and Kevin Ryno, really took a leap of faith this year and stepped it up. It was just so thrilling to show a collection at this year’s show and see what our other Spokane designers were bringing to the table as well. The other project so near and dear to my heart that just finished up is the Beyond Pink designer Bra Fashion show. This was my 4th year participating in this event and I was so thrilled about the amount of money that my design was able to raise for that charity. $4100.00!!!! Those funds will enable Beyond Pink to provide a number of grants for women in our area to receive thermography exams for the early detection of breast cancer. Life doesn’t get much better than that.

Q: Any new projects coming up? A: I will do a couple of trunk shows or art festivals now just to keep my brand name out there while I spend a couple months (yikes) cleaning up and re-organizing my sewing room in the aftermath of this year’s projects. I also do custom orders for people wanting very specific things…weddings, special events, stage wardrobe for musicians, fashion shoots for photographers… stuff like that.

Directions for Pear and Potato 1. Par cook pear and potato in acidic liquid (eg apple cider vinegar or lime lemon juice) 2. Slice pear and potato into 1/2 inch cube slices. 3.
