We hold these truths to be self-evident : Making America Great Again And with these famous words, the most important document in our nation’s history was drafted and signed by men who believed in altering the course of history by declaring their independence from an autocratic ruler and oppressive system. The Declaration of Independence, the Constitution of the United States of America, and the Bill of Rights forms the framework for the freedoms that are granted to each American. Whether we think about it or not, these documents embody the principles that govern our daily lives. What makes America great? Is it political power? Is it economic power? Is it military power? The answer lies in its people. We the people...these are the first words on the preamble of the US Constitution. Because in reality, power rests in the people. On November 8, 2016, we will make history again by voting in the 45th President of our Republic. As citizens of this Republic, we need to ensure that our voices are heard and the way to do that is to exercise our right, our privilege to vote wisely and responsibly. Sadly, at times it has seemed that the current political scene has resembled a circus that has just come into town. In other cultures, having fun at the absurdity of it all, is often the best coping mechanism. We’ve opted to join in by poking fun at the situation especially since there have been numerous clown sightings in several places. The result is an editorial involving clowns and mimicking a campaign to encourage people to see the levity of it all but at the same time reminding them of their civic duty to vote.

Some want to build walls and some want to build bridges. In fashion, as in politics through immgration policies, some want to build walls instead of bridges. The move to keep away those who are “different” from us, manifests itself in several ways. In the early days when people came by the boatloads to this country, they were measured, examined, and questioned and segregated before they were allowed into the country. The early immigrants faced discrimination and tough challenges. It’s the same with the fashion industry. There is a cadre of gatekeepers who wish to keep the fashion community exclusive to their “kind” to maintain control over what the general masses can consume as “fashion”. We are a nation of immigrants. And it is this quality that keeps this nation moving forward with new ideas and new cultures that enrich our daily lives. Without these new ideas and enriching cultures, the survival of the fashion industry will be put in jeopardy. Witness the emergence of new and upcoming fashion designers such as Alexander Wang, Thakoon, Jason Wu, Phillip Lim, Prabal Gurung, Issey Miyake, and Monique Lhuillier whose designs are being featured on the runways of New York Fashion Week. What then does it mean to be an American? It means that we have choices. We have tons of choices, too many in fact that we often get paralyzed making the right choice. Not every person on this planet has the luxury of having more than one choice. And for many of us, we tend to squander that opportunity. Finally, even though we resort to political satire to get our point across, we will always feature beauty in every single issue we publish. Beauty is important, it gives us hope!

“The basis of our political systems is the right of the people to make and to alter their Consitutions of Government. But the Constitution which at any time exists, ‘till changed by an explicit and authentic act of the whole People is sacred obligatory upon all.” -- George Washington
