The Selfie Generation What’s the first thing you think of when you wake up? Work? What to wear? What you missed on social media? Let’s face it, we live in a social media driven world and whether we acknowledge it or not, the influence of social media in our daily lives is unquestionable. There are more than 800 million internet users in China alone. Most, if not all, major brands are chasing potential customers using the power and influence of social media. And social media networks like facebook have made it a bit difficult for brands to rely on their page posts to reach these potential customers. This has opened up opportunities for “celebrity influencers” especially on social media networks such as Twitter and Instagram. These celebrity influencers post pictures of them endorsing these brands and when you have millions or over a hundred thousand followers, there’s no question that the reach can be quite influential. These celebrity influencers get paid to endorse these products. Is it any wonder that many of the youth take to social media networks to post pictures of themselves and their “glamorous” lives to attract as many followers. Majority of the posts are of course on the positive side (as long as you avoid Facebook groups or Facebook in general) leaning more towards the better view or story of life. In fact, if you’ve paid attention for any great length to social media features, you may have noticed the proliferation of “stories”. Snapchat was the very first social media network platform to take advantage of this and copycats like Facebook and Instagram (owned by Facebook) recognized the attraction and usefulness of this feature that they introduced it in their own platforms.
Nothing attracts attention more than seeing these short stories from friends and families and “celebrities” we follow on social media because it helps us connect with them and become a part of their daily lives. It is estimated that today’s Millenial generation will take an approximate average 25,000 selfies in their lifetime. Google reports that over 24 billion selfies were taken in 2015. Over 200 million people were responsible for those 24 billion selfies. Selfies are quite a cultural phenomenon that transcends cultures. Everyone who knows how to take one and has the opportunity to take one takes advantage of taking selfies featuring either just themselves or with their friends and families. New products have popped up to take advantage of this phenomenon. Do you know that over 300,000 units of selfie sticks were sold in the year 2014 alone? Yes the selfie is here to stay and the ones who know how to work it and take advantage of this opportunity might very well be the next celebrity influencer. Industries like the fashion industry have taken advantage of the selfie generation to sell their products. That OOTD or outfit of the day selfie is a great way to show the world your fashionable side. With technology constantly improving with higher resolution cameras and self-portrait features like what the new Apple iPhone has introduced, we should see more selfies as people become more confident in posting their attractive selves on social media platforms.

More than any other generation we are focused on our personal fashion. Our Outfit of the Day (OOTD) speaks to more than just our fashion, it speaks to who we are. It speaks to how we choose to look sexy, how we feel comfortable, and what statements we want to make about ourselves.

We choose to make ourselves more visible through our selfies. Our social media pages are not just a way to communicate with friends and family but they also provide a platform for us to tell the world, “This is who I am! To the Selfie Generation, we salute you.

“A man should hear a little music, read a little poetry, and see a fine picture every day of his life, in order that worldly cares may not obliterate the sense of the beautiful which God has implanted in the human soul. -- Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
