Cosplay and Fantasy Comic books! Who remembers them? If you’re one of the few lucky ones who remembers kudos to you. The golden age of comic books began during the 1940s when super heroes like Superman, Batman, Captain Marvel and a host of others came into the scene. The overall theme was always the same -- the triumph of the good guys over the bad guys. The success of Superman created spin-offs of a whole new genre of characters with secret identities, and often super human powers and abilities, not to mention colorful outfits. Fast forward to today in the digital age and you have a new slew of characters with super human and out-of-thisworld powers and more often than not, dark personalities. The weapons and the tactics may be different but the overarching theme is still the same -- the battle between good and evil. It is this obsession with the fantasy world that has spawned big events called Comic-Cons. A Comic-Con is a convention about, well you guessed it -- comic books and the characters that occupy their space. It is in these Comic-Cons that you find Cosplayers. Cos-what?! You see Cosplay is a coined term representing two words -- costume and play. Get it now? So what exactly is cosplay? The dictionary defines it as... The practice of dressing up as a character from a movie, book, or video game, especially one from the Japanese genres of manga and anime.
For those of you who remember comic books and the super heroes of yesteryears like Superman, Batman, Iron Man, Flash, Aquaman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern and the like -- dressing up as one of those characters was considered (and still is) pretty cool. The younger generation has just taken it to the next level and instead of being limited to the superheroes, there are a lot of people who dress up as the super villains because they might consider the traditional superheroes as boring and predictable. More often than not, the super villains have the cooler super powers and perhaps better costumes. For those of you who are from the Star Wars generation, dressing up as a Storm Trooper or as the Dark Lord himself - Darth Vader seems so much better than dressing up as any of the Rebel Forces. Capturing the mood and essence of cosplay without the context and foreknowledge of the sub-culture is hard. Let’s face it, capturing anything that is involved in the fantasy realm is hard because you often have to provide that context to complete the picture so to speak. Brenda Cook captured some of the fantasy with her team of models while Connor Bacon concentrated on producing an editorial on Fight Club and John Austin, who actually attends Comic-Cons like the popular San Diego Comic-Con gives us a glimpse of the characters that spend hundreds, if not thousands of dollars to participate in this celebration of popular culture. In this day and age where we seriously need heroes, it may be tempting to don that costume and shield our true identity to do good. We probably lack the superhuman powers possessed by our favorite comic book character, but what we lack in superhuman powers, we most certainly won’t lack if we exercise everything in our power to make this real world that we live in a better place. For all you cosplayers -- keep on!

“Before the sun sets on her sixteenth birthday, she will prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel, and fall into a sleep like death! A sleep from which she will *never* awaken! --Maleficent

“Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?” “That depends a good deal on where you want to get to.” “I don’t much care where –” “Then it doesn’t matter which way you go.” --Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland
“I wonder if I’ve been changed in the night. Let me think. Was I the same when I got up this morning? I almost think I can remember feeling a little different. But if I’m not the same, the next question is ‘Who in the world am I?’ Ah, that’s the great puzzle!” --Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland
““What is the use of a book,’ thought Alice, ‘without pictures or conversations?’”” --Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland
“Imagination is the only weapon in the war against reality. --Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland
Mermaids Models: Amy Sherman & Kali DeChenne Photographer: Brenda Cook
“Darwin may have been quite correct in his theory that man descended from the apes of the forest, but surely woman rose from the frothy sea, as resplendent as Aphrodite on her scalloped chariot. -- Margot Datz, A Survival Guide for Landlocked Mermaids
“I am a siren, and for my adoration of mankind, have been caught in fishing nets one time too many. And in those fishing nets I have learned too many unfavorable things about human intentions and the lack of trust and goodwill; I’m not going to allow myself to be caught, anymore. Sirens do well at singing the sirens’ song and dragging vile people to their deaths, and for good reason!” -- C. JoyBell C.
“I know I play with danger every time I swim, but I need this. I’m Mer and the ocean is mine.” -- Tabi Card, Mersong
“This is why the oceans taste of salt. It is because of all the tears of mermaids for sailors who have died for their love. The oceans are salt with death and grief. -- Jaxy Mono, The Book of Dubious Beasts
“She was like a mermaid enrapturing me the sailor with all her charms! -- Avijeet Das
“Mermaids can spend eternity at sea because their hearts are, some say as cold as the water. -- Charmed
“Always be yourself. Unless you can be a Mermaid... Then always be a Mermaid.”
