FANTASY! It’s just a fantasy, it’s not the real thing Fashion is more than just style or the way we dress. Fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, and what is happening all around us. Fantasy is imagining things that are impossible or improbable. More often than not, we see fantasy come to life in fashion creations. Some of which, never make it into Main Street. This combination of fashion and fantasy is nowhere more evident than in the Steampunk movement. To put it in three words, Steampunk is Victorian Science Fiction. It is a blending of an alternate view of history and science fiction. The Victorian part is not so much a reference to a culture as it is about a time period and an aesthetic which is reflective of the industrialized 19th century. This was the time period when the development of modern technology ushered us into the modern world that we know today. Steampunk imagines a future world that combines the Victorianinspired technology such as steam-powered aircraft and mechanical machines. When we think of Steampunk, we think of steam, gears and goggles as recognizable symbols that represent Steampunk fashion. It is a movement that revels in the fashion tailored to the individual, where goods are made to last and machinery is regarded as visual art work. Sarah Trickler of Sarah Trickler Photography captures a few images of Steampunk fashion while she attends Steamposium in Seattle. Another movement that is quite popular is Cosplay, which is short for costume play. It is a performance art where

cosplayers wear costumes that represent a certain character usually identified by their unique name. Diana Prince is one such popular female character often emulated in cosplay. She is more popularly known as Wonder Woman created by American psychologist and write William Moulton Marston for DC Comics. Her character is a warrior princess of the Amazons. Her gift is superhuman powers and superior combat and fighting skills. Her most famous weapon is the lasso of truth, a pair of indestructible bracelets, a tiara and an invisible airplane. In this issue, John Austin teamed up with Amy Sherman in their take on Wonder Woman. Mirror, mirror on the wall…who’s the fairest of them all? In the story of Snow White, the evil queen was so obsessed with wanting to know if there was anyone more beautiful than her. The reality is that every female lead character in fairy tales is often the fairest, the most beautiful and the best dressed of them all. Snow White, Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, and the Sleeping Beauty -- you name it, fairy tales have legitimized the feminine beauty ideal. In a world where women value personal freedom and individuality, the pursuit of beauty still occupies a central role in most women’s lives. Shane Savage of Savage Photography captures a different dimension of these female fairy tale characters in his representation of Maleficent, Little Red Riding Hood and Cinderella. Their external adornment of physical beauty is accompanied by their inner strength and resolve that represents their personal freedom and individuality. And finally, Mike Laverdure captures Snow White as we all know her – as a fair maiden.
