Before the smartphone, people had a social life limited by territory and time. Simpler, then? Perhaps! You could contact with others for a time, or several times. Today there are no limits –except the ones you limit yourself to- in order to communicate, for a new kind of 'social life' in which you start to meet people more for the present than for the past, for what they are sharing now than what they used to.

Friendships are kept going now with more online communication than that which is reached in 'real' or 'physical' life, with new relationships and possible friendships emerging through afinities, and not by coincidence.

Originality and effort are no longer aimed exclusively at personal satisfaction, rather shared satisfaction. A kind of social change like the wayward wanderings of Christopher McCandless (or how he preferred to be called: Alexander Supertramp. Book and film 'Into the Wild') who ended up in a lonely spot in the middle of Alaska, following his search along the path of happiness. Precisely here, at the last moment, he understood that "Happiness is only real when it is shared".

The islanders here know this, it is in their genes. Since birth, they search for little pockets of happiness in a limited territory, those special moments, and then above all, try to share them. It has always been this way, but now we have smartphones, so logically we should be happier and share this happiness further, shouldn’t we?

So what makes us happy?: A beautiful day, a landscape of dunes next to the sea, a mass of flowers and plants, a meeting with friends and family, a grand show, enjoying an excellent menu… Yes, these are many motives for being so, even further afield, at those moments in which daily life becomes a new experience, maybe just relaxation and peace and quiet. Then, this happiness becomes a social event and becomes contagious when shared. A picture, a phrase, the memory of someone, these are gestures that friends and families can enjoy and savour with a smile. Such great technology should have something good about it, shouldn’t it?

Social media and applications are now part of our daily lives, and are now used as much or even more so than traditional means of communication. Being part of these networks requires being active and generous, considering your nearest and dearest and for them to consider you, knowing and being known, that they should know the place where you are happiest, for many reasons.

There is so much online, too much perhaps, good and bad, but the blame for the negative does not lie with technology. Rather, these platforms should be used to face up to evil, rubbish, ignorance, prejudice, intolerance and hate. Even though all this might exist, it doesn’t dominate the world, and even less so our own lives –there are happy moments the island of Gran Canaria offers us-, with its brightness, landscapes, vegetation and welcoming smile. For this reason, just for a few days, the island could be that network.

A long awaited, mythological dream, where happiness can indeed be found... and be shared with a click!

COMPARTE FELICIDAD Antes del smartphone la gente tenía una vida social limitada por el territorio y el tiempo. ¿Más sencilla? ¡Quizás! Podías contactar con determinadas personas durante un rato o varios. Hoy no hay límite -salvo el que cada uno se impongapara comunicar, para una nueva forma de 'vida social' en la que comienzas a conocer personas más por el presente que por el pasado, por el qué comparten que por lo compartido en el pasado. Las amistades se renuevan con más comunicación que la alcanzada en la vida 'real' o 'física', y surgen nuevas relaciones y posibles amistades por afinidades, no por coincidencias.

La originalidad o el esfuerzo ya no se dirigen exclusivamente a la satisfacción personal, sino compartida. Una especie de cambio social como el que guió el deambular extraviado de Christopher McCandless (o como él prefería que le llamaran: Alexander Supertramp. Libro y película 'Into the Wild') que acabó en un paraje solitario en medio de Alaska, tras

buscar en el camino la felicidad y, precisamente, en el momento final comprendió que "La felicidad solo es real cuando se comparte". El isleño lo sabe, lo lleva en sus genes. Busca desde que nace en un territorio limitado los rincones felices.

Los momentos y, sobre todo, compartirlos. Siempre fue así, pero ahora tenemos smartphones y, por lógica, deberíamos ser más felices y compartir esas alegrías. ¿Y qué nos hace felices?: Un día hermoso, un paisaje de dunas junto al mar, un vergel de flores y plantas, un encuentro con amigos o familiares, un gran espectáculo, degustar un excelente menú… Si, muchos motivos para ser felices, incluso con más motivo lejos de casa, en esos momentos en los que lo cotidiano da paso a experiencias novedosas, o tan solo al descanso y la tranquilidad. Pero esa felicidad se convierte en un acontecimiento social y en una forma de contagio cuando se comparte. Una imagen, una frase, un recuerdo a alguien, son gestos que los amigos y familiares disfrutan y saborean

con una sonrisa. Algo bueno tendría que tener tanta tecnología.

Las redes sociales, las aplicaciones, ya son elementos cotidianos y usados tanto o más que los medios de comunicación tradicionales. Participar en las redes implica ser activo y generoso, recordar a los tuyos y que ellos te recuerden, conocerlos y que te conozcan. Y que conozcan el lugar donde eres feliz por múltiples motivos.

Hay mucho, demasiado, bueno y malo, pero la culpa de lo negativo no es de la tecnología. Más bien, se debería utilizar esas plataformas para hacer frente a la maldad, basura, ignorancia, prejuicios, intolerancia y odio. Aunque todo esto exista, no domina el mundo y menos nuestro entorno -esos momentos felices que nos ofrece la isla de Gran Canaria-, con su luminosidad, sus paisajes, su vegetación y la sonrisa hospitalaria. Por eso, por unos días, podría hacer de la red una isla. Un paraíso soñado, mitológico, donde se puede hallar la felicidad... ¡y compartirla con un click!

A new art form is simmering under a soft heat at the most forward thinking restaurants in Gran Canaria. Behind the scenes at eateries around the island, there are creative backrooms where local cooks are pushing forward the barriers with an endless passion, in an attempt to conquer the most demanding of palates. The discovery of inspiration is the result of a continual evolutionary process which ends up capturing the taste buds of clients, and this is precisely the aim of ‘Recipes from an IslandMix’, a digital recipe board put together by the Gran Canaria Tourist Board, with the help of 19 of the finest chefs on the island.

Local cuisine is a product of a priceless potential that generates huge added value to the cultural offerings on the island. Tradition and new cooking methods are blended in around twenty exclusive recipes that can be viewed at www.islamezclada.com and on the institution’s social media sites. Each corner of these intimate formulas give off a genuine cutting edge aroma, in which the flavours of the locally grown ingredients waft through. This is how the recipe board came about, and it aims to be a reference point for all those avid diners who are craving new taste experiences.

Canario, reinvents one of the most outstanding dishes on the Archipielago with her 'Carajacas with caramelized onion and toasted sesame'.

A maternal recipe handed down is behind this tasty offering in which tender beef is the star of a range of flavours, the product of several different spices.

The owner of the popular Nelson Restaurant, located at Arinaga beach, provides us with a pleasant surprise with its rich native Atlantic fish, which always leaves a mark on seafood enthusiasts.

The tropical fruits from Mogán shine through in the 'Red tuna Tartar with mango and avocado' dish, brought to us by Davidoff Lugo.

This culinary creator, who defines his cooking style as “a fusion of Canary cuisine” is the head chef at the Maroa Club de Mar restaurant, where he delights his clients with a variety of culinary masterpieces drawn straight from the influence of such exotic and contrasting places as Japan and Venezuela.

This international ascendency is also present in the 'Black suckling pig with orange, soya and Gáldar onions', designed by Austrian cook Thomas Leeb. He hails from a family with a long cooking tradition, and is currently the creator behind the à la carte menu at the Hotel Santa Catalina in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, where he mixes typical island recipes with new gastronomic formulas brought in from Central Europe.

Alexis Álvarez, head chef at Los Guayres restaurant, located within the Hotel Cordial Mogán Playa, goes for his 'Leg of goat in salmorejo dressing, with red onion and potato purée', and has readers of the recipe board bowing before him. Locally sourced products dominate the menu by this chef, who learnt his trade alongside great Spanish master chefs before setting off down his own path with creations that combine a modern slant with a local heritage.

Pastry making in Gran Canaria boasts a real masterchef in the shape of Aitor Neketan, one of the most highly praised baking artisans on the islands.

'Cálido' is his latest offering, in which fruits such as bananas and passion fruits are blended with white Arehucas rum, in a deliciously sweet and sugary sensation which pays tribute to the finest desserts on the island.

From their quiet anonymity, each of these culinary virtuosos have transformed Gran Canaria into a place worthy of delving into, as they manage to bring time to a halt around a fine dining table. Each of the dishes that make up ‘Recipes from an IslandMix’ is an intense volcanic journey of emotions, rivalled only by the island’s natural beauty itself.

La trastienda de los locales gastronómicos de la Isla es el espacio creativo en el que los cocineros de la tierra se lanzan con infinitas dosis de pasión a la conquista de los paladares más exigentes. El descubrimiento de la inspiración es el resultado de un continuo proceso evolutivo que debe terminar causando un flechazo sensorial al cliente, y ese es el objetivo de ‘Recetas de una IslaMezclada’, un recetario digital elaborado por el Patronato de Turismo con la colaboración de 19 de los mejores chef de Gran Canaria.

Este creador que define su estilo como “cocina canaria de fusión” es el chef responsable del restaurante Maroa Club de Mar, en el que deleita a sus clientes con una variedad de obras culinarias que beben directamente de la influencia de países tan exóticos y antagónicos como Japón y Venezuela.

Los productos de la tierra dominan la carta de este chef que se curtió junto a grandes maestros de la cocina española antes de imprimir su sello propio a creaciones que combinan modernidad y acervo local.

La repostería de Gran Canaria tiene a un auténtico prestidigitador en la figura de Aitor Neketan, uno de los artesanos de pastelería más reputados del Archipiélago. 'Cálido' es su último retoño y en él se mezclan frutas como el plátano o el maracuyá con ron Arehucas blanco, en un delicioso y dulce baile azucarado que rinde tributo a los mejores postres de la Isla.

Gran Canaria made history in 2016 recording the best tourist year in its history, welcoming in 4.2 million visitors, according to latest figures by Frontur and the Canary Institute of Statistics. The new figure represents a rise of 13.6% and half a million more tourists than in 2015.

This increase consolidates Gran Canaria as the Canary island with the highest percentage growth in terms of national and international travellers last year, as nearly 15 million tourists chose the Canaries for their holiday breaks.

These excellent closing figures for the 2016 season reflect the important promotional work the island has put in overseas, and signals a fundamental boost in the face of new challenges ahead in 2017, including reducing the seasonal swings, increase tourist expenditure on the island and generate loyalty among new visitors, according to Tourism Councillor at the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, Inés Jiménez.

The site features over 40 running routes and cycle tourism routes covering a total of 12 municipalities, and has several filters that offer different levels of difficulty, distance and duration, that enable users to design their own training programmes depending on their fitness, and to check out the ratings of routes made by other athletes of a similar level.

One of the aims of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria is to increase the number of active hikers on the island, so they have launched a specific guide on the Camino de Santiago (St James Way), in Spanish, English, German and French, for pilgrims who wish to cover the three stages of the route.

This document provides visitors with a brief historical introduction about the birth of a route that joins the town of Maspalomas with Gáldar along 73 kilometres of ancient footpaths that meander through pine tree forests, ravines and volcanoes.

Hikers will also have further detailed information on the itineraries they need to take, as well as recommendations concerning safety, clothing and footwear, plus the top tourist attractions along the way, and how to take local public transport.

El Paso de la Plata, Tunte, Los Llanos de La Pez and La Cruz de Tejeda are just some of the places visitors must stop off at on their way up to Gáldar, a town which back in 1965 obtained the same priviledges as Santiago de Compostela in terms of its full religious redemption for pilgrims arriving at its holy temple.

Uno de los objetivos del Cabildo de Gran Canaria es incrementar el protagonismo de los turistas que practican senderismo en la Isla, por lo que ha lanzado una guía específica sobre el Camino de Santiago en español, inglés, alemán y francés para los peregrinos que deseen cubrir las tres etapas del recorrido.

El documento pone a disposición del visitante una breve introducción histórica sobre el nacimiento de una ruta que une Maspalomas y Gáldar a través de 73 kilómetros de antiguos caminos ubicados entre pinares, barrancos y volcanes.

Los senderistas cuentan también con información detallada del itinerario que deben de recorrer, así como recomendaciones en materia de seguridad, ropa y calzado, cuáles son los atractivos turísticos más destacados y cómo acceder al transporte público.

El Paso de la Plata, Tunte, Los Llanos de La Pez o la Cruz de Tejeda son algunos de los lugares que el visitante no debe perderse en su desplazamiento a la ciudad de Gáldar, que obtuvo en 1965 los mismos privilegios que tiene Santiago de Compostela para otorgar la indulgencia plenaria a los peregrinos que lleguen a su templo.

NEWS / NOTICIAS Spanish actress Concha Velasco will be performing on 10th, 11th and 12th February at the Theatre Cuyás in the capital city. She has been distinguished with the National Theatre Awards by the Ministery of Education, Culture and Sport, and will be taking the star role in Reina Juana, directed by Gerardo Vera and written by Ernesto Caballero, the director of the National Dramatics Centre.

In this work, Concha Velasco plays the part of Juana de Castilla (“Mad”Juana la Loca), the daughter of the Catholic King and Queen who from an early age was dragged through all the turbulent and intriguing political and religious mires of the time. She was also an emotionally torn woman, due to all the contradictions and rebellions she endured, and her strong character and huge emotional imbalance which all came to light with her marriage to Felipe de Habsburgo.

All this made the legend and morbidness grow around this figure, inspiring theatre productions, television series and films, which paradoxically provide an unfair and superficial insight into her character, according to Vera.

National Award. Last November it was announced that Concha Velasco had been awarded the National Theatre Award. The reasons cited for this accolade, among others, was the sheer “passion, bravery and excellence” with which she had taken on complex roles including the afore-mentioned ‘Reina Juana’, plus ‘Olivia y Eugenio’ and ‘Life Ahead’, all of which have been on the theatre calendar at the Cuyás. www.teatrocuyas.com

La actriz Concha Velasco actuará los días 10, 11 y 12 de febrero en el Teatro Cuyás de la capital grancanaria. La actriz, distinguida con el Premio Nacional de Teatro que concede el Ministerio de Educación, Cultura y Deporte, protagoniza el espectáculo Reina Juana, dirigido por Gerardo Vera y escrito por Ernesto Caballero, director del Centro Dramático Nacional.

En la obra, Concha Velasco interpreta a Juana de Castilla (Juana la Loca), hija de los Reyes Católicos que desde niña se vio arrastrada por las turbulencias e intrigas políticas y religiosas de su época. Además, fue una mujer emocionalmente destrozada por sus contradicciones, su rebeldía, su fuerte personalidad y su enorme desequilibrio afectivo que cristalizó en su matrimonio con Felipe de Habsburgo.

Todo ello ha hecho que la leyenda y el morbo se hayan acumulado en torno a su figura, inspirando obras de teatro, series de televisión y películas, que, paradójicamente, le han dado un tratamiento injusto y superficial, según Vera.

Premio Nacional. The Atlantic Modern Art Centre, (CAAM) and Casa África, in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, present an exhibition called ‘The iris of Lucy. Contemporary African Artists’, which goes on display simultaneously at both these institutions, from the 26th January to 4th June at the CAAM and from the 27th January to 26th May in Casa África.

This internationally acclaimed project is dedicated to the memory of Egyptian artist Amal Kenawy, and is commissioned by Orlando Britto Jinorio. It arrives in the Gran Canarian capital following its exhibition in 2016 at the MUSAC museum in the Spanish city of León, and in the Departmental Contemporary Art Museum of Rochechuart, in France. Its production at the CAAM features the collaboration of JTI. The iris of Lucy shows different spheres of contemporary African creations, through a selection of 25 artists from Argelia, Benin, the Congo Democratic Republic, Egypt, Ethiopia, Gabon, Kenya, Malawi, Morocco, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa, Tunisia and Zimbabwe, along with two Canarian artists.

All the works brought together for the exhibition provide an insight into the complex and varied facets of such diverse African cultural identity.

Corte Inglés has been offering a very vspecial service to tourists visiting Gran Canaria: their free shuttle service. This service consists of a bus that takes foreign tourists staying at hotels around the south of the island to their department stores at Avenida José Mesa y López, 13 y 18, completely free of charge.

This service has been going on in Tenerife for over two years now, and has been highly popular with visiting tourists. The route picks up tourists from a number of hotels, initially three days a week. So every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday during business hours, the bus collects passengers looking to shop at El Corte Inglés.

On this page you can check timetables and pick up points where the bus collects clients from. The arrival up at the capital is estimated at 11:30. The return is at 17:00 along Avenida José Mesa y López itself, at number 38, and takes passengers back the way

they came. This means clients have over five hours to do their shopping and also visit the city.

This bus service is free of charge, and is aimed at clients interested in going shopping at El Corte Inglés. To use the service, the only requirement is that a purchase be

made in the department store, otherwise you will be kindly requested to take public transport back to your hotel. As this is a complementary service, places are subject to availability.

The professional career of Agüimes Joaquín Espejo has been quite spectacular. His latest business venture is called Moorea and is located in the Hotel Vital Suites in Maspalomas. This restaurant features a great central window through which a magnificent kitchen is in full view, capturing the centre of attention and pride of place.

We sit down with Joaquín Espejo so he can reveal a few secrets about his new restaurant.

Este restaurante tiene como eje central un gran ventanal en el que se puede ver una magnífica cocina que ejerce de centro de atención y protagonista absoluta. Hablamos con Joaquín Espejo para que nos adelante algunos secretos de este nuevo restaurante.

We are striving for a unique experience.

We are continually looking to change our own rules. I assure you it is not easy to break your own rules and ring in the changes, your comfort zone, but true success is only earned this way.

At the end of the day it is all about showcasing our work in a haute cuisine restaurant, with a much closer relationship with our clients, with all barriers down and where the only thing we are trying to do is make our clients excited and give them new culinary experiences.

There is a phrase I really like. It is ‘work in silence and let your success speak for you’.

I am still a cook and what I want to do is cook and tell the stories of my trade.

Moorea’s concept of the kitchen being right in the middle is quite impressive...

This is the attraction we were looking for. The idea of interacting with the client is complex, but it is much more creative. We have created a very special atmosphere in which we are looking for client participation. We want people to see a real working natural kitchen, but at the same time it is a stage which enables us

to be right in front of our clients, so they can smell, feel and enjoy… For me that is a proper kitchen. The luxury is our close proximity. It is like at home, we start with the lounge and from there we look to a gastronomic experience.

What kind of cuisine do you put before your clients?

To talk of local cuisine is perhaps going a bit too far. My cooking is natural and I like the relationship that is generated by what goes on around me, I interpret the products adapting myself to them and in this way I draw out their essence. I see to the selection and purchasing of the right products in order to innovate, by digging around in unexplored areas. This allows me to enjoy my cuisine, without forgetting our history but moving forward continually with total freedom.

What would you highlight about the restaurant?

I think the strength of Moorea is its concept as a whole. The work of my team, the location, the setting, the sensations, aromas… All these elements together make up the Moorea experience. I think we have achieved that and our clients are enjoying it.

Buscamos una experiencia única. En todo momento queríamos cambiar nuestras propias reglas. Te aseguro que no es fácil romper con tus propias reglas y salir de la inercia, del espacio de confort, pero solo así se consigue el éxito verdadero.

Al final se trata de la forma de contar nuestro trabajo en un restaurante de alta cocina, con una relación con el cliente mucho más cercana, desprovista de corsés y donde lo único que intentamos es trabajar en la búsqueda para que el cliente se emocione y viva nuevas experiencias.

Hay una frase que me gusta muchísimo.

Es ‘trabaja en silencio y deja que el éxito hable por ti’. Yo sigo siendo cocinero y lo que quiero es cocinar y contar cosas con mi oficio.

Impresiona el concepto de Moorea con la cocina como eje central...

Hemos buscado ese atractivo. La idea de interactuar con el cliente es complejo pero también mucho más creativa.

Hemos creado un ambiente muy especial en el que buscamos la participación.

y verdadera pero, al mismo tiempo, es un escenario que nos permite estar delante de los clientes, oler, sentir, disfrutar…

Para mi, eso es la cocina. El lujo es la cercanía. Es como en casa, comenzamos por el salón y a partir de ahí buscamos la experiencia gastronómica. ¿Qué tipo de gastronomía ofreces a tus clientes?

Hablar de cocina local resultaría extremo.

Mi cocina es natural y me gusta la relación que se genera con lo que me rodea, interpretar los productos adaptándome a ellos y así destilar su esencia. Me encargo de buscar y seleccionar los productos adecuados para innovar rastreando en lo inexplorado. Esto me permite disfrutar de la gastronomía, sin olvidar nuestra historia pero evolucionando de manera continua con total libertad. ¿Qué es lo que destacarías del restaurante?

Yo creo que la fuerza de Moorea está su conjunto. El trabajo de mi equipo, el lugar, el entorno, las sensaciones, los olores… Todos los elementos juntos forman la experiencia Moorea. Creo que lo hemos logrado y los clientes lo están disfrutando.

“Gran Canaria Moda Cálida is the benchmark on which Canary designers showcase our projects”

Just like the great Hollywood films, Pedro Palmas’ professional career is retold in two parts.

The first part tells the story of a young Canarian fashion designer who uses every single moment in his incipient career to learn, grow, surround himself by those who know the most, and work tirelessly. The second part started just a short while ago, following a 12 year absence from the catwalks. So far this film we have only seen the slower beginning, with a more polished script and a leading character who is now much clearer about what he is searching for, what he wants the most, and what he doesn’t want.

Why have you been away for 12 whole years?

I was stuck in a spiral in which success was killing me. I was selling more than I could produce, and I tired myself out by getting involved in a thousand different things, designing, doing interviews, workshops, dressmaking, parades, publications… At the same time, I couldn’t move forward the way l wanted to because circumstances prevented me. I had problems raising the investments I needed and the industry didn’t help me along. I was in a rut, and I was clear I wouldn’t end up doing curtains and fancy dress for Carnival.

These last twelve years have enabled me to try other things I was interested in, such as working with the wardrobe designers at Televisión Canaria, to give classes on window dressing, decorating hotels, and even get involved in the magazine Con Estilo which is published by La Provincia newspaper. From the outside it looks like I stopped working for twelve years, but they were years spent learning and doing

What do you remember about your beginnings?

They were much more complicated than now. There was no industry as such and there were hardly even women sewing at home. At a very young age I joined one of the first companies in Gran Canaria dedicated to fashion. It was called Vicio.

There I learned how to work with industrial machines, and to cut fabrics. Remember that back then there were no official studies or anything. We learnt by working, and from others who were in the business.

At that time I would stay behind a while in the company and starting designing bits and pieces, little suits, the odd paid for work…

Following a period of changes and setbacks, I made the most of the contacts I had with people who sewed and did dressmaking and opened a small workshop. I already had a few clients and jobs, when I joined forces with some other designers including José García, Roser Muntané and Juan Roga, and we set up

How did Moda Cálida start?

It was a joint idea by several Canarian designers. We knew eachother well and we needed something to boost the sector. It was all a bit chaotic in the beginning because we did joint parades with Tenerife. We did shows there, then in Gran Canaria, which made it confusing for our buyers and the general public. We finally went our separate ways and left behind what is now known as Gran Canaria Moda Cálida.

Today it is an incredible stage both nationally and internationally. Fashion design is a growing industry and Gran Canaria Moda Cálida has become the benchmark on which designers and companies showcase our projects.

Who are your references as a designer?

I like the latest creations. Personally I don’t like working on the typical garment to show off the fabric. I like to investigate ways that attempt to bring something to the fashion world. Of course, they then have to be sold, because there isn’t enough space to keep everything.

I mean, you create things but you try to make them “wearable” and to be actually used.

With this philosophy in mind, I like Valentino and Mugler. Any designer who creates new things is interesting, as it gets harder every day.

We know that the next few days are going to be interesting...

Yes, I am really excited because it is a specially good period right now. This last year I have met some very interesting people, and my work has been talked about in magazines such as Vogue and Hola. I have also felt at home on the catwalk, such as at Costura España, which only goes back four years, and it was the first time I got to present my work. It was a wonderful experience, because they showcase the design styles that I like making.

But what really pleased me is that in a few days I shall be going to London Fashion Week, between 16th and 21st February. Lupe Castro (Ms Castro Rides) proposed me, and she is a real character in the fashion world. She is convinced I am the Spanish designer she should take to London to show off my work in a stunning London hotel. I am excited, and grateful.

• ¿Por qué 12 años de ausencia?

Yo estaba metido en una dinámica que te llevaba a morir de éxito. Vendía más de lo que producía y terminé muy cansado de montar mil cosas, de diseñar, de entrevistas, de talleres, de confección, desfiles, publicaciones… Al mismo tiempo, no podía caminar al ritmo que yo quería caminar porque las circunstancias lo impedían. Tenía problemas para conseguir las inversiones que necesitaba y la industria no acompañaba. Me veía mermado y tenía claro que no quería terminar haciendo cortinas ni disfraces para Carnaval.

Estos doce años han servido para hacer cosas que me interesaban, como colaborar con el vestuario de la Televisión Canaria, dar clases de escaparatismo, decorar hoteles e incluso implicarme con la revista Con Estilo que edita el periódico La Provincia. Desde fuera son doce años de parón pero han sido años de aprendizaje y de hacer cosas que me apetecían y me llenaban. ¿Cómo recuerdas tus comienzos?

Mucho más complicado que ahora. No había industria y apenas contábamos con señoras que cosían en sus casas. Muy joven formé parte de una de las primeras empresas de Gran Canaria dedicadas a la moda. Se llamaba Vicio. Ahí aprendí a trabajar con máquinas industriales, a cortar tejidos. Ten en cuenta que en aquellos tiempos esto no eran estudios homologados ni nada.

Donde realmente aprendías era trabajando y con personas que trabajaban en el sector. En aquellos momentos ya me quedaba un rato más en la empresa y hacía cositas, pequeños trajes, algunos encargos…

Al cabo de un tiempo de cambios y contratiempos, aproveché que conocía a la gente que cosía y hacía confecciones para abrir un pequeño taller. Ya tenía varios clientes y encargos cuando junto a diseñadores como José García, Roser Muntané o Juan Roga montamos una pequeña exposición y posteriormente, Moda Cálida. ¿Cómo empezó Moda Cálida?

Fue una idea conjunta de varios diseñadores canarios. Nos conocíamos entre nosotros y necesitábamos algo que impulsara el sector. Al principio era todo un

Presentábamos allí, luego en Gran Canaria y era muy confuso para los compradores y para el público. Finalmente nos separamos y quedó configurado lo que se conoce como Gran Canaria Moda Cálida.

A día de hoy es una plataforma increíble a nivel nacional e internacional. El diseño de moda es un sector creciente y Gran Canaria Moda Cálida se convierte en el marco en el que diseñadores y empresas apoyamos nuestros proyectos. ¿Cuáles son tus referentes como diseñador?

Me gustan las creaciones nuevas.

Personalmente no me gusta trabajar la típica prenda que se hace para lucir tejido. Me gusta investigar formas que intentan aportar algo al mundo de la moda. Pero claro, después tienes que venderlas porque no hay espacio posible

para guardarlo todo. O sea, que creas cosas pero intentas que sean “ponibles”, que se puedan vestir.

Por esa misma filosofía, me gustan Valentino o Mugler. Cualquier diseñador que aporte cosas nuevas es interesante ya que cada día es más complicado.

Sabemos que estos próximos días van a ser muy interesantes...

la primera vez que presentaba mi trabajo. Una experiencia magnífica porque, además, allí se muestra el estilo de diseño que realmente me gusta hacer.

Pero lo que me tiene encantado es que en los próximos días me voy a la Fashion Week de Londres que se celebra entre el 16 y el 21 de febrero. Me ha propuesto Lupe

Castro (Ms Castro Rides), una auténtica personalidad dentro del mundo de la moda. Ella está convencida de que soy el diseñador español que debe llevar a Londres para mostrar mi trabajo en un maravilloso hotel londinense.

These conferences are open to the general public, and are, at the same time, the culmination of the EPTI programme, or Executive Program for Tourism Industry, which HAC is running on the island from 13th February.

Following this training course, the business school will be back at its home city of New York, developing its Leadership Development (PLD) aimed at Top Spanish Executives who have shown great potential to lead initiatives in varied fields and to help develop the skills that top managers require. From 24th to 28th April, in Tenerife, the latest

edition of the Executive Program for Tourism Industry will be held.

HAC’s Executive Programmes accelerate the transition towards leadership and enable companies to equip themselves with a solid competitive edge to help them become growth leaders in their market.

There are currently few clues as to what name the indigenous Canarians gave to La Fortaleza.

However, this is how it is referred to in a land distribution document pertaining to 1555, where carpenter Francisco Hernández requested the right to install bee-hives in the area, as well as occupying a cave from “Canarian times”.

The absence of a known name attracts our attention strongly, given the possible importance the settlement might have had, both for the existence of a town on the western hillside, and the efforts to erect constructions at the top of La Fortaleza Grande. We also know, that at the end of the 15th century, it might have been totally abandoned before being reChristened as La Fortaleza.

Humiaga, the lost temple of the Gran Canarian aborigenes On several occasions, ethnohistorical sources point to Tirajana, with Ansite located within, as being the reason behind a number of authors believing that this was the place, without having a solid archaeological base to back it up.

In Tirajana several authors have located the Sanctuary of Humiaga or Humiaya in the area around "Riscos Blancos", although other researchers defend the theory that it is no more than a mistaken interpolation.

So some writers who were contemporary to the conquest of Gran Canaria described this site; Alonso de Palencia does so in his Fourth Decade, while Abreu Galindo and Marín de Cubas also cite this settlement. Alonso de Palencia describes a temple, in the shape of a castle, with all

kinds of fortifications, stuck right at the top of a mountain. Marín y Cubas, describe the place more profusely: "The first house of prayer was Almorare, which is a house sitting over Risco Jumiaia, in the region of Tirajana, called Riscos Blancos, which had space for Antón de Santidad; there the local farm hands called on the spirits and made sacrifices, by burning objects between large boulders, over a thick walled altar made from huge stones and slabs which can be seen today, rather like chapels, and other dwelling sites all within a large fence; and the cliff is the craggiest of all the places around, where no man can budge a single stone".

These descriptions have served for several authors (Onrubia, J., 2003; Cuenca, J., 1986) to link this settlement with Humiaga.

Elsewhere, if we move over to the north of Africa we can see some similarities between this and Almoggar religious sites in the

region around Sus and Dra. These sites are linked to the tombs of holy men or morabitos, and are usually located up on high ground with difficult access to them, where once a year local dwellers would come on a pilgrimage with some food and sometimes with a goat or other such animal to sacrifice and then eat (Sabir, 2001). As one can see, there is not only a phonetic and linguistic link between the African and Canary words of Almoggar and Almogaren, but their use is also strikingly similar, as explained by Gómez Escudero: “...They had another house on a high cliff called “Almogaren” which is a saintly place, where they called on the spirits and made sacrifices, sprinkling it with milk every day, below where their God lived on high. They took their cattle there to two high cliffs, Tirma in the region of Gáldar and at Tirahana called Humiaya and white cliffs: they would worship very seriously at these cliffs, they

would make their way up there in processions carrying branches and palm leaves to the Maguas or virgins with cups of milk to pour over them; they would cry out and hold their hands upwards towards the sky, and surround the crag, and from there make their way down to the sea, striking with water with the branches...”.

Beyond these quotations from etho-historic sources, there remains evidence that we have yet more arguments to back the idea that La Fortaleza could have been Humiaga. We believe that there are sufficient archaeological arguments to back this hypothesis. The structures and layout of the peak area and the ascent itself, as well as archaeological materials recovered from the area allow us to cite the likely cultural and ritual use for this site. We are yet to determine exactly what kinds of rites and uses these structures had, while if a sacrificial area actually existed, it could have

either been the whole mountain including the settlement, or just the peak itself.

In this sense, the whole general interpretation by Grau Bassas of the whole rock being the almogaren worship area would seem to add ever more credence.

This idea is more akin to the contemporary theories of the Archaeology of the Landscape where the remains, its topographic location and its relationship and integration within its cosmogony indicate it being a whole entity.

Indeed, a recently opened line of research hints at the linking of a range of anthromorphic etchings to Lybian Berber styles on the pathway up to the top of La Fortaleza Grande.

These are all hypotheses at the end of the day. In any case, we are sure that this site has revealed itself as being one of the settlements with the greatest future in Gran Canaria.

We await the results of upcoming excavations which may allow us to delve further into its history.

¿HUMIAGA? • En la actualidad pocas certezas

existen sobre el nombre por el que los indígenas canarios se referían al yacimiento de La Fortaleza. Sin embargo, este ya aparece como tal en un repartimiento de tierras de 1555, donde el carpintero Francisco Hernández pedía instalar colmenas en el lugar, así como ocupar una cueva de "tiempo de los canarios”.

La ausencia de este topónimo nos llama poderosamente la atención dada la posible importancia que pudo tener el yacimiento, tanto por la existencia de un poblado en la ladera oeste, como por el esfuerzo constructivo visible en la cima de La Fortaleza Grande. Sabemos, además, que ya a finales del siglo XV pudo estar abandonado y ser rebautizado posteriormente como La Fortaleza.

Humiaga, el templo perdido de los aborígenes de Gran Canaria Las fuentes etnohistóricas hablan varias veces de Tirajana, ubicando allí Ansite, lo que ha determinado que algunos autores planteen que era ese el lugar, pero sin tener una base arqueológica sólida. En Tirajana varios autores localizan también el Santuario de Humiaga o Humiaya en la zona de "Riscos Blancos", aunque otros investigadores defienden que no es otra cosa más que una interpolación errónea.

Así, algunos escritores contemporáneos a la conquista de Gran Canaria describieron este lugar; tanto Alonso de Palencia en su Cuarta Década, Abreu Galindo o Marín de Cubas citan este yacimiento. Alonso de Palencia describe un templo, a modo de castillo, con toda clase de fortificaciones, ubicado en la cumbre de un monte. Marín y Cubas, describe más profusamente el lugar: "La primera casa de oración era Almorare, que es una casa sobre un Risco Jumiaia, en el término de Tirajana, llamado Riscos Blancos, que cupieron a Antón de Santidad; allí invocaban y sacrificaban quemando entre braceros de cantos grandes de piedras, sobre un altar de paredón de grandes piedras con grandes losas que hoy se ven allí, como capillas, y otros casarones dentro de un gran cerco; y es el risco el más escollado de aquellos sitios, que no hay hombre que pueda menear una sola piedra".

Dichas descripciones han servido a varios autores (Onrubia, J., 2003;

Centro de Interpretación de La Fortaleza.

Cuenca, J., 1986) para vincular este yacimiento con Humiaga. Por otro lado, si acudimos al norte de África vemos como existen algunas similitudes con los Almoggar de la zona del Sus y Dra. Estos lugares vinculados a la tumba de santones o morabitos, que su suelen ubicar en zonas altas y de difícil acceso, donde una vez al año lo lugareños acuden en peregrinación con comida y a veces con alguna cabra o carnero para sacrificar y comer in situ (Sabir, 2001). Como se percibe, no sólo hay una similitud fonética y lingüística en el término Almoggar-Almogaren sino que el uso que se realiza de estos es similar al explicado por Gómez Escudero: “...Tenían otra casa en un risco alto llamada “Almogaren” qe es casa Santa, y allí invocaban y sacrificaban, regandola con leche todos los días y que en lo alto vivía su Dios, y tenían ganados pr. esto difrutados, tambien iban a dos riscos muy altos, Tirma en el término de Gáldar, y otro en Tirahana llamado Humiaya y riscos blancos: Juraban por estos dos riscos muy solemnemente, á ellos iban en procesión con ramos y palmas y las Maguas o vírjenes con basos de leche para regar; daban voces y alzaban ambas

manos y rostro hacia el cielo, y rodeaban el peñasco y de allí iban e el mar y daban con los ramos...”.

Más allá de lo citado en las fuentes etnohistóricas, la evidencia es que cada vez tenemos más argumentos que sugieren que La Fortaleza pudo ser Humiaga. Creemos que hay argumentos arqueológicos suficientes para proponer dicha vinculación. Las estructuras y la propia configuración del espacio de la cima y la propia subida, así como el registro arqueológico recuperado nos permite inferir un más que probable uso cultual/ ritual de este lugar. Todavía falta determinar el tipo de ritos y usos de estas estructuras, y si de existir una zona sacralizada, sería toda la montaña incluyendo el poblado o tan sólo la cima.

En este sentido, la propia interpretación integradora de Grau Bassas de todo el roque como un almogaren nos parece cada vez más acertada. En este sentido, esta idea se acerca a los postulados contemporáneos de

la Arqueología del Paisaje donde el resto arqueológico, su ubicación topográfica y su relación e integración dentro de su cosmogonía deben ser un todo.

De hecho una línea de trabajo abierta recientemente es la vinculación de diversos grabados antropomorfos así como grabados líbico bereberes vinculado al

camino de ascensión a la cima de La Fortaleza Grande.

En definitiva, existen argumentos. En cualquier caso, sí tenemos claro que este sitio se ha revelado como uno de los yacimientos con mayor futuro de Gran Canaria.

Esperamos que las próximas excavaciones nos permitan seguir ahondando en su historia.

4. MASPALOMAS SAND DUNES The oasis of Europe San Bartolomé de Tirajana

To the south of Gran Canaria is a paradise of sand dunes and crystal clear water, and is one of the most interesting protected areas in Europe. Known as the Special Natural Reserve of the Maspalomas Sand Dunes, it spreads out over 404 hectares, in the form of a huge field of golden sandy dunes, the Charca lake and palm grove constitute a quite unique ecosystem right on the sea edge.

This coastal location is also blessed with an unbeatable climate throughout the year. With constant sunshine, its ambient temperature oscillates between 20ºC and 25ºC, with mild night time temperatures.

5. PUERTO DE MOGÁN Canals over the ocean Mogán This marine and sports port is known as the “the little Venice of the Canaries”, a haven that lies between steep cliffs and a tranquil sea which tempts visitors a dip.

It is situated to the southwest of the island, and the University of Siracusa (Nueva York), claims it is the place in Europe with the most sunny days and with one of the finest climates in the world.

But if there is something really unforgettable about Mogán, it is its bright and colourful sunsets.

6. THE CUEVA PINTADA MUSEUM AND ARCHAEOLOGICAL PARK Aboriginal art in the Atlantic Gáldar

The Cueva Pintada Museum and Archaeological Park is an enormous excavation standing over the former capital of the kingdom of Agaldar. The museum reveals the way of life prior to the arrival of the Europeans at Gran Canaria and its colonization. The Cueva Pintada is the best example of wall painting by the ancient Canarians, and one of the most important in the Atlantic.

The settlement reveals in minute detail the indigenous houses and caves there, with views over the excavation from a grand walkway that goes all around the place.

6. MUSEO Y PARQUE ARQUEOLÓGICO CUEVA PINTADA Arte aborigen en el Atlántico

El Museo y Parque Arqueológico Cueva Pintada es una enorme excavación sobre la antigua capital del reino de Agaldar. El museo muestra la forma de vida anterior a la llegada de los europeos a Gran Canaria y la colonización. La Cueva Pintada es el mejor ejemplo de pintura rupestre de los antiguos canarios y uno de los más importantes del Atlántico.

El conjunto permite conocer con detalle las casas y cuevas indígenas, observando los trabajos de excavación desde una gran pasarela que rodea al poblado.

7. PUERTO DE LAS NIEVES The jewel of Flemish art Agaete Puerto de Las Nieves is a typically Canarian picturesque fishing neighbourhood, next to the equally beautiful town of Agaete. There is a superb range of commercial and restaurant establishments, along with beaches with crystal clear waters. The Paseo de los Poetas is one of its main attractions: a long avenue, packed with fresh fish and seafood restaurants. At nightfall the views are truly amazing, over Tenerife and its Mount Teide in the background, as the sun sets and releases an array of beautiful tones over the Atlantic horizon.

The hermitage of Las Nieves houses the Triptych of Las Nieves in a tiny room, a work of Flemish art by Joos van Cleeve. Nearby is the Dedo de Dios, a basalt rock that rises up out of the ocean next to some stunning cliffs.

8. GUAYADEQUE RAVINE The troglodyte world Ingenio – Agüimes

Guayadeque Ravine is a natural gem shared by the municipalities of Ingenio and Agüimes, near to the beaches at the south of Gran Canaria. Under the palm groves visitors can find traces of the ancient inhabitants on the island.

Along this deep ravine is the troglodyte settlement of Cueva Bermeja, together with welcoming restaurants dug out of the mountainside. The Visitors’ Centre is also a must see, as it provides an insight into the pre Hispanic age and the amazing natural wealth of flora and fauna in the ravine.

Here we can find the Gran Canaria Giant Lizard (Gallotiastehlini), one of the largest in the world.

8. BARRANCO DE GUAYADEQUE El mundo troglodita

El Barranco de Guayadeque es la joya natural que comparten los municipios de Ingenio y Agüimes, próximo a las playas del sur de Gran Canaria. Bajo los palmerales del barranco puede encontrar la huella de los antiguos habitantes de la isla.

En este profundo barranco se localiza el poblado troglodita de Cueva Bermeja, así como acogedores restaurantes labrados en la roca de la montaña. Además, es visita obligada el Centro de Interpretación, que explica la época prehispánica y la sorprendente riqueza natural de la flora y fauna del barranco.

9. CALDERA DE BANDAMA Voyage to the centre of the earth Las Palmas de Gran Canaria - Santa Brígida With a surface area of 325.7 hectares, the Natural Monument of Caldera de Bandama is made up of the stunning Peak (574 m altitude) and the Crater (220 m deep and 1000 m in diametre).

The highlight of its interior is a unique archaeological settlement formed by a group of house caves and granary dug out of the rock, called the Cueva de los Canarios, with some important Berber inscriptions of mysterious meaning.

The town centre of Teror is one of the places with the strongest island sentiment, and is also a place of pilgrimage for the island’s inhabitants as the Basilica is home to the Virgin of El Pino, the Patron Saint of Gran Canaria.

Teror’s beautiful Canarian architecture features houses with wooden balconies, and constitutes one of the leading cultural heritages in the Canaries, with buildings that date back to the 17th century. It is a town which oozes typical local products, including its chorizos and traditional sweets.

Cuando nos nombran la palabra ‘Casino’ lo primero que nos viene a la mente es la idea de un establecimiento al que acudir a probar suerte con los juegos de azar. Sin embargo, la realidad es bien distinta. El concepto ‘Casino’ ha evolucionado completamente a lo largo de los últimos años y el Casino Las Palmas en una clara prueba de ello.

Al paisaje se une la gastronomía más típica de la isla, basada en exquisitas parrilladas de pescado y de carne de cabrito, una amplia selección de quesos y, como no, en una repostería que se consume en todo el Archipiélago. SOUTHEAST ROUTE / RUTA SURESTE Cities and villages basked in sun / Ciudades y pueblos bañados por el sol The east coast of Gran Canaria reveals to visitors a landscape of gently sloping terrain together with deep ravines of natural beauty. There are four municipalities in this area boasting large and spectacular beaches that are ideal for nautical sports enthusiasts, such as snorkelling or windsurf.

Visitors will also be able to discover archaeological sites that give a clear idea of just how the ancient inhabitants used to live, in quaint little houses carved out of the rugged mountain ravines.

La costa este de Gran Canaria muestra al visitante un paisaje basado en una orografía de suaves pendientes intercaladas por profundos barrancos de gran valor natural. Cuatro municipios que, en su mayoría, cuentan con espectaculares extensiones de playas idóneas para las prácticas náuticas como el submarinismo y el windsurf.

De igual modo, el visitante podrá descubrir los yacimientos arqueológicos que dan fe de los hábitos de vida de los antiguos pobladores canarios, que habitaban en casas cuevas excavadas en las zonas rocosas de los barrancos.

Special Nature Reserve of THE MASPALOMAS DUNES Maspalomas Costa Canaria is the setting for one of the most fascinating natural protected areas in the Canaries, "The Special Nature Reserve of the Maspalomas Dunes". It takes up an extensive area of approximately 404 hectares, with a huge field of rolling Dunes, La Charca lake and a Palm Grove which together make up a stunning landscape, with unique geomorpholic and botanical features plus a wealth of wildlife, which cannot be found on the rest of the islands, or the rest of the world. It is an almost magical beauty to behold.

Since 1987, when it was declared a National Natural Protected Area, it has seen all sorts of efforts to preserve and restore its natural ecosystems, and in 1994 it was classified as a Special Nature Reserve.

Of the three distinct parts of the Reserve, the most attractive and spectacular is undoubtedly its field of dunes, which occupy a surface area of 4km2. All the sand was originally brought in by the sea. Contrary to what we might think, the dunes are very much alive, as they move about. The wind is responsible for the gradual movement of the dunes over the extensive sedimentary platform they occupy.

On the edge of the Dunes area, and at the very mouth of the Fataga Ravine, is a salt water lake which gets its water from the Maspalomas Ravine and the sea. La Charca lake is surrounded by vegetation, and plays a key role as a refuge and nesting site for birds. There is likewise a close link between the water vegetation and the wildlife living around here.

This area constitutes a unique ecosystem in the Canaries, and is a stop off point for migratory birds on their way to the African continent. La Charca lake is also home to a series of fish who have adapted to the prevailing salty conditions of the water.

Finally, next to La Charca stand the remains of the highly valuable Palm Grove. Common species to be found here are the ‘Phoenix canariensis’ or Canary Palm Tree, and the “Phoenix dactylifera’ or date palm, as well as numerous other water species.

The whole Nature Reserve is open to the public, as long as the rules the Maspalomas Dunes Natural Landscape Board have set out for its preservation are adhered to.

Reserva Natural Especial de LAS DUNAS DE MASPALOMAS En Maspalomas Costa Canaria se localiza uno de los espacios naturales protegidos más interesantes del archipiélago, "La Reserva Natural Especial de las Dunas de Maspalomas". Conformada por una amplia extensión de aproximadamente 404 hectáreas, un gran campo de Dunas, una Charca y un Palmeral constituyen un conjunto de enorme interés paisajístico, geomorfológico, botánico y faunístico, único en el Archipiélago Canario. Este paraje único en el mundo, es un paisaje impregnado de una belleza casi mágica.

Declarado desde 1987, Espacio Natural Protegido de Interés Nacional, se realizan acciones de cara a la conservación y restauración de sus ecosistemas, siendo en 1994 clasificado como Reserva Natural Especial.

De las tres unidades que conforman la Reserva, la más llamativa y espectacular es sin duda el campo de dunas, que ocupa una superficie de 4 km2. La arena acumulada en las Dunas es de procedencia marina. En contra de lo que a primera vista pudiese pensarse, las dunas son algo vivo; se mueven. El viento es el responsable de este movimiento a través de la extensa plataforma sedimentaria que ocupan.

En el límite del Campo Dunar, en la misma desembo-

cadura del Barranco de Fataga, se localiza una charca de agua salobre que se nutre de las aportaciones de agua procedentes del Barranco de Maspalomas y del mar. La Charca está rodeada por un cinturón vegetal, jugando un papel fundamental al servir de refugio y de lugar de nidificación a la avifauna. Es de señalar, así mismo, la estrecha relación existente entre la vegetación acuática y la fauna.

Este lugar constituye un ecosistema único en todo el Archipiélago Canario, que sirve de punto de escala a las aves migratorias hacia el continente africano. La Charca da acogida a una serie de peces adaptados a vivir en las particulares condiciones de salinidad allí existentes.

Por último, junto a la Charca se encuentran restos de un valiosísimo Palmeral. Las especies que allí se localizan son ‘Phoenix canariensis’ o palmera canaria y la “Phoenix dactylifera’ o palmera datilera, así como numerosos hídricos.

Toda la Reserva Natural se puede visitar, siempre respetando las normas de uso que el Patronato del Paraje Natural Dunas de Maspalomas, ha gestionado para su conservación.

MASPALOMAS

LIGHTHOUSE The lighthouse was built by Gran Canaria engineer Juan León y Castillo (1834-1912), and although the decision to build a lighthouse in Maspalomas dates from 1861, it was only in 1884 that he was commissioned with the drafting of the project. Around that time the area was no more than uninhabited wasteland, cut off from the rest of the island. For the construction of the lighthouse, a temporary dock was installed to unload materials, as it could only be accessed by sea.

Building work lasted until 1889, when the actual lantern was put in, whose optical structure was manufactured that year in Paris by F.Barbier & Cie. The lighthouse was lit up on 1st February 1890, and served as a nocturnal guide to boats covering the route between Europe and America.

The tower itself, overlooking the sea down at the south, is a conical cylinder shape with an average diametre on its upper body of over 6.20 metres, and rises up some 54.70 metres. The lantern sits at the top, giving the building an overall height of 60 metres. The flashing lights it emits at night time reach some 19 nautical miles out to sea.

In 2005, the Canary Island Government declared the Maspalomas Lighthouse as Cultural Value, in the category of Historical Monument.

EL FARO DE

MASPALOMAS

Concebido por el ingeniero grancanario Juan León y Castillo (1834-1912), la decisión de construir un faro en Maspalomas data de 1861, pero es en 1884 cuando se le encarga la redacción del proyecto. Por aquel entonces el lugar era un paraje deshabitado, incomunicado del resto de la isla. Para la construcción del faro se dispuso un muelle para descargar los materiales, que sólo podían llegar por mar.

Las obras duraron hasta 1889, con la colocación de la linterna, en la que finalmente quedaría instalado el aparato óptico de F.Barbier & Cie, fabricado en París ese mismo año. La luz del faro se encendía el 1 de febrero de 1890, sirviendo de guía a los barcos que cubrían las rutas entre Europa y América.

La torre, presentada al mar, en la parte sur del conjunto, es un cilindro troncocónico que cuenta con un diámetro medio en el cuerpo superior de 6,20 metros, una altura de 54,70 metros y en su culmen se ubica la linterna, con lo que el conjunto alcanza una altura de 60 metros. Los destellos tienen un alcance nominal nocturno de 19 millas náuticas.

LAS PALMAS DE GRAN CANARIA Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is the most cosmopolitan city of the Canaries and one of the cities with the best weather in the world thanks to its exceptional location, next to the Tropic of Cancer, and to the trade winds that come from the northern Atlantic.

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria The hermitage has always had a great historical value, as the original structure was built around the time of the conquest of Gran Canaria. On its façade is a plaque which commemorates the passing of Christopher Columbus through the city. The hermitage is a simple, sober structure, and houses a fine baroque altarpiece inside.

Tiene un valor histórico destacado ya que la ermita original se levantó en el centro del barrio de Vegueta en los años de la conquista de Gran Canaria. En su fachada una placa recuerda el paso de Cristóbal Colón por la ciudad. La Ermita, de construcción sencilla y sobria, posee un hermoso retablo barroco.

Behind the Cathedral stands the Plaza del Pilar Nuevo, a place local women used to gather at to draw water from a central fountain. The square, which retains a charming stone fountain, is where the Craft and Culture market is regularly held. It is surrounded by buildings from different eras and styles, including the very impressive façade and green portico of the Columbus House museum.

Detrás de la Catedral se encuentra la Plaza del Pilar Nuevo, antiguo centro de reunión de las mujeres que recogían agua del pilar central.

En esta plaza, que conserva una coqueta fuente de piedra, se lleva a cabo el Mercado de Artesanía y Cultura. La rodean edificios de diferentes épocas y estilos y destaca entre ellos la portada verde de la Casa de Colón, una extraordinaria fachada que no deja indiferente a nadie.

The Plaza del Espiritu Santo is the original centre of town and the source for the water supply network on the island. In it sits the small stone domed fountain designed by Ponce de León, representing one of the few covered fountains in Hispanic architecture.

The square is actually a crossroads situated on the left hand side of the Town Hall building, and has a dragon tree and monkey puzzle tree in the middle that symbolize the twinning of the Canaries with America.

The square, together with the 17th century hermitage and the grand town houses that surround it, constitute a charming corner of one of the most stately areas of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The surrounding area has served as the setting for theatrical productions, as well as the meeting point for the Via Crucis for the Holy Christ during Easter Week in the capital.

Original Kilómetro cero y punto de partida de la red de aguas de la Isla, la Plaza del Espíritu Santo acoge el templete de piedra dibujado por Ponce de León, una de las escasas fuentes cubiertas de la arquitectura hispánica. Este cruce de caminos, situado a la izquierda de las Casas Consistoriales, cuenta con un drago y una araucaria que representan el hermanamiento entre Canarias y América.

La Plaza del Espíritu Santo, junto a la ermita datada en el siglo XVII y a las construcciones señoriales que la rodean, constituye uno de los rincones con más encanto de la zona noble de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Su entorno ha servido como parte de la escenografía de representaciones teatrales y como marco de encuentro en el Vía Crucis del Santísimo Cristo del Buen Fin de la Semana Santa Capitalina.

Its colonial style, with wooden colonnades and paneling, stonework courtyard and façades perfectly set off the architectural personality of the city. The style is very much a connection between the Canary Islands and America. Thirteen permanent rooms and exhibition halls display the annexation of the Canaries by the Crown of Castile, the arrival of Christopher Columbus on Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, pre-Columbian America, together with a history of naval cartography. There is also a library and specialist study centre on site.

Culture in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is the culmination of its tricontinental relationship with Europe, Africa and America. At calle de Los Balcones, in the district of Vegueta, one of the best exponents of this culture proudly stands, this being the Atlantic Centre for Modern Art (CAAM in Spanish).

Its exhibitions, together with its permanent collections, focus on the creative processes from these three continents throughout the 20th century, paying special attention to the interpretation of historical cutting edge genres through to modern day artistic manifestations.

The centre was designed by architect Sáenz de Oiza, and is a fine example of preserving historical heritage, and adapting modern functional facilities.

The Plaza de Santa Ana nestles right in the heart of Vegueta and was the city’s first main square, dating back to the early 16th century. The square is an iconic monumental masterpiece, and the location for the Bishop’s Palace and the Provincial Historical Archive, while opposite the Cathedral stands the Town Hall building. The square is guarded by eight bronze dog statues, crouching impassively against the passing of time and history.

This building was erected in the Santa Ana square in the 16th century, as a symbol of religious power, although its façade dates from the 15th century. It is the work of architect Juan Ponce de León, and its architectural style enhances the alfiz over the porch. It has undergone several refurbishments over the years, the latest one carried out in the middle of the 19th century. It stands on two floors, and has a beautiful though simple and austere façade. The palace holds the bishop’s residence, while admission to certain parts of the building is free to visitors.

En el corazón del barrio de Vegueta se encuentra la Plaza de Santa Ana, la primera plaza mayor, construida a comienzos del siglo XVI. Este espacio histórico es un magnífico conjunto monumental donde se ubican el Palacio Episcopal y el Archivo Histórico Provincial y, frente a la Catedral, las Casas Consistoriales. Los guardianes de la plaza son ocho perros de bronce que permanecen impasibles al paso del tiempo y de la historia.

Fue construido en la Plaza de Santa Ana en el siglo XVI como símbolo del poder religioso, aunque su fachada data del siglo XV. Es obra del arquitecto Juan Ponce de León. En su arquitectura destaca el alfiz de su portada. Ha sufrido diferentes reformas y reconstrucciones. La última se llevó a cabo a mediados del siglo XIX. Cuenta con dos plantas y una fachada hermosa por su austeridad y sencillez.

Dentro del Palacio se encuentra la residencia del Obispo. La entrada es libre a algunas dependencias.

(Vegueta) 35001. Las Palmas de Gran Canaria The Casas Consistoriales house the old Town Hall building, and are a leading exponent of the city’s architectural and artistic heritage. The building itself is of neoclassical design, and was built between 1842 and 1855. It remained closed in the period from 2001 to April 2010 due to a complete restoration programme, directed by architects Magüi González and José Antonio Sosa.

A traditional Canary courtyard greets visitors on their way in. The present day building holds an important art collection, with some 90 works adorning its walls, by artists such as Cristino de Vera, González Méndez and Jesus Arencibia. Other interesting features include the patchwork mosaics in the boardroom by Manolo Millares, and the famous “Inmigrantes” painting by Ventura Álvarez Sala given as a gift by the Prado Museum in 1909, which hangs over the main stairway by the entrance.

Las Casas Consistoriales son una referencia del patrimonio arquitectónico y artístico de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. El edificio, de estilo neoclásico, se construyó entre 1842 y 1855 y permaneció cerrado desde el 2001 hasta abril de 2010, años en los que fue sometido a una completa restauración dirigida por los arquitectos, Magüi González y José Antonio Sosa.

Un patio de tradición de arquitectura canaria recibe al visitante. El inmueble actual alberga una importante representación artística. Sus paredes muestran alrededor de 90 cuadros de autores como Cristino de Vera, González Méndez y Jesús Arencibia. Destacan las arpilleras de Manolo Millares en la Sala de Juntas y el famoso cuadro ‘Inmigrantes’, de Ventura Álvarez Sala, que cedió el Museo de El Prado en 1909, en la escalera principal de acceso.

Its unique style windows, twin towers crowned with exotic domes and its decorative adornings on the outside make the exterior of this building one of the most striking in the city. The inside has many modernist elements, and is presided by an elegant main staircase which leads to the old dance hall, today known as the Salón Dorado, a French-inspired hall offering a rich combination of artistic works. Its ceiling is decorated with three great canvass works from the beginning of the 20th century by artist Manuel González Méndez, depicting mythological themes representing Apollo, Orpheus and Thalia.

La fachada principal del Gabinete Literario es un punto de referencia en el patrimonio arquitectónico de la ciudad. Sus singulares ventanales, dos torres coronadas por exóticas cúpulas y su ornamentación decorativa de superficie hacen del exterior del edificio uno de los más bellos de la ciudad. Su interior, con elementos modernistas, lo preside la elegante escalera principal que da acceso al antiguo salón de baile, hoy Salón Dorado, un espacio monumental de estilo francés que ofrece una densa combinación de elementos artísticos. Su techo está decorado por tres grandes lienzos pintados a comienzos del siglo XX por el artista Manuel González Méndez con temas mitológicos que representan a Apolo, Orfeo y Talía.

Its construction began five centuries ago, and it combines various architectural styles, from late Gothic to Neoclassical and Baroque. Visitors can go right to the top of the tower and take in the breathtaking views over the city, and visit its museum of Sacred Art. Its interior houses many works of art, including the Christ by Luján Pérez that presides over the Capitulary Hall, and the carving of Our Lady of Los Dolores.

La Catedral preside la Plaza de Santa Ana. Su construcción se inició hace cinco siglos. En esta edificación confluyen diversos estilos arquitectónicos, desde el gótico tardío, al neoclásico y barroco. Se puede ascender a su torre y contemplar desde allí una panorámica de la ciudad o visitar su Museo de Arte Sacro.

En su interior alberga varias obras de arte, entre las que destaca el Cristo de Luján Pérez, que preside la Sala Capitular, y la talla de la Virgen de los Dolores.

Its archaeological fund is widely considered as of the largest and most complete in the Canaries. Among it, its collections of pottery, idols, pintaderas, and plant-fibre and leather handicrafts, lithic, bone and wood industry, as well as anthropological remains stand out.

El Museo Canario se encuentra en el corazón del barrio de Vegueta en un edificio de gran valor patrimonial. Es una referencia obligada para el estudio de la sociedad prehispánica de Gran Canaria.

It opened its doors to the general public in 1991, but the original building was built in 1898. It is one of the most impressive samples of the late nineteenth century's architecture, and one of the most significant buildings of the Triana-Vegueta urban area. Its ecleptic architecture has had many different uses and restorations works. It has benn declared a good of cultural interest.

Due to the special characteristics of its bibliographic and documentary funds with heritage character, the library offers a unique source for research.

Opening times: Mondays to Fridays from 9am to 8:30pm

La Biblioteca Insular está situada en la Plaza Hurtado de Mendoza, mejor conocida como La Plaza de las Ranas. Abrió sus puertas al público en marzo de 1991pero el edificio original es del año 1898. Representa una de las mejores muestras de la arquitectura de los últimos años del siglo XIX y es uno de los edificios más significativos del conjunto urbano TrianaVegueta. Su arquitectura ecléctica ha tenido varios usos y varias reformas. Es un edificio declarado bien de interés cultural.

Dadas las especiales características de sus fondos bibliográficos y documentales con carácter patrimonial, la biblioteca está en disposición de ofrecer materia de investigación de valor único para el que la visite.

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Flanked by the Gabinete Literario and the Alameda de Colón, and located in the limit between Triana and Vegueta, the visitor to the square notices the subtle scents of coffee, gathering and life. Next to the square whose name comes after the father of Canarian literature, Bartolomé Cairasco de Figueroa, visitors will find the Gabinete Literario, first of the buildings projected as an artistic coliseum of the city in the mid-nineteenth century. Today, this building that stands upon the land where Cairasco de Figueroa’s house once stood is still a true institution of the city, cultural reference and home of events and unmissable exhibitions. On the other side, the terrace of Hotel Madrid invites to gather and relax.

Flanqueada por el Gabinete Literario, y la Alameda de Colón y situada en el área limítrofe entre Triana y Vegueta, la plaza desprende aromas de café, tertulia y vida. Junto a la plazoleta que debe su nombre al padre de las letras canarias, Bartolomé Cairasco de Figueroa, se encuentra el Gabinete Literario, primero de los edificios proyectados como coliseo artístico en la ciudad a mediados del siglo XIX. Hoy en día esta construcción, alzada sobre el solar en el que se levantaba la casa de Cairasco de Figueroa, sigue siendo toda una institución de la ciudad, referencia cultural y albergue de eventos y exposiciones indispensables. De otro lado, la terraza del mítico Hotel Madrid se suma a este espíritu que invita a la charla y al sosiego.

(Triana)35002. Las Palmas de G.C Plaza Hurtado de Mendoza is located on the limit between Triana and Vegueta and it is best known as Plaza de Las Ranas (“Frogs Square”), after the ornaments of the large fountain that presides over it.

From this cosy spot we can see the unique neoclassical building which now houses the Biblioteca Insular.

The shadow given by the trees at the square, the old Stone Bridge which links the two noble neighbourhoods, the three kiosks dotted around the place, and the nearby small shopping centre Monopol, once a hotel, are some of the appeals of this curious spot which also has al fresco cafes where to drink a refreshment or to watch a football match.

En la línea divisoria entre Triana y Vegueta se encuentra la Plaza de Hurtado de Mendoza, más conocida popularmente como Plazuela de Las Ranas, nombre con la que se hace referencia a la ornamentación de la gran fuente que la preside.

Desde esta coqueta parada podemos contemplar el singular edificio neoclásico que hoy alberga la Biblioteca Insular. Las Palmas de Gran Canaria The Alameda de Colón commemorates Christopher Columbus’ stay in the city during his Atlantic crossing adventure. The square is located in the area of Triana, next to Cairasco Square and the Gabinete Literario. It is also the location of the Church of San Francisco, which homes the image of Our Lady of La Soledad, revered by many citizens.

The Columbus’ Monument, presiding over the square, was a project of Laureano Arroyo (circa 1892).

La Alameda de Colón recuerda el paso de Cristóbal Colón por la ciudad en su aventura trasatlántica. La plaza se encuentra en el barrio de Triana junto a la Plaza de Cairasco y el Gabinete Literario y acoge la iglesia de San Francisco, que guarda la imagen de la virgen de La Soledad, muy venerada entre los habitantes de la ciudad.

El monumento a Colón, que preside la plaza, fue proyectado por Laureano Arroyo hacia 1892.

In 1843 one of the greatest novelists in Spanish literature was born In Las Palmas de Gran Canaria: Benito Perez Galdos. Author of the ‘Episodios Nacionales’ and ‘Fortunata y Jacinta’ has now a museum in its native town, exactly in the same building where he lived his childhood and youth.

The building itself is an example of the Canarian domestic architecture of the nineteenth century. Around some central patios it recreates in a documented way the family and social environment in which the early life of the writer unfolded until he was 19.

El Teatro Pérez Galdós es una institución cultural que cuenta con más de un siglo de historia. El edificio se construyó en el barrio de Triana, junto a Vegueta, en el margen izquierdo del barranco Guiniguada. It is located in the area of Triana, next to the bus station of San Telmo. It was the first historical placement of the northern wall of the city and the first harbour of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

Standing out in the park, the modernist kiosk, projected by Rafael Massanet y Faus, used today as an open air cafeteria; the music kiosk, a common stage for the Municipal Music Band; and the Hermitage of San Telmo, built in the eighteenth century, home of one of the most beautiful altarpieces of the island.

There is also a playground for the joy of families and children.

Se encuentra en el barrio de Triana junto a la estación de Guaguas de San Telmo. Fue el emplazamiento histórico de la muralla norte de la ciudad y del primer muelle de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

In 1993, the borough was declared Historic Complex and Good of Cultural Interest. It is an ideal space for watching the modernist architecture of its buildings.

At numbers 76 (corner with Munguia St.), 78, 80, and 82 of Triana St., there is a set of buildings that stand out as Modernist Houses. These buildings are reconstructions from the first decade of the twentieth century, after the last realignment of Triana Street. It is a set that reflects a particular commercial bourgeois culture, with high architectural quality.

Néstor Museum

The Castle of Mata, declared an Artistic-Historical Monument in 1949, is one of the few remains of the defensive system of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria from the sixteenth century. It is located next to the building of the Cabildo Insular de Gran Canaria, in the borough of Triana. It was part of the old defensive walls of the city and played an essential role during the pirate raids of Van der Does and Drake.

El castillo de Mata declarado Monumento Histórico Artístico en 1949, es uno de los pocos vestigios del sistema defensivo de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria del siglo XVI. Está situado junto al edificio del Cabildo de Gran Canaria en el barrio de Triana. Formaba parte de las antiguas murallas defensivas de la ciudad y desempeñó un papel esencial durante los ataques de los piratas Van der Does y Drake.

Nestor Martin Fernandez de la Torre was born in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in 1887 and was one of the great modernist painters attached to symbolism.

The museum, dedicated to the work of the painter, is an art gallery and exhibiting to the public most of the artist's work grancanario. It is located in the architectural ensemble of the Pueblo Canario, in the neighborhood of Garden City, with buildings that resemble traditional Canarian architecture. This set, on the doorstep of one of the lungs of the city, Doramas Park, was built according to plans Nestor's brother, architect Miguel Martín Fernandez de la Torre.

The building consists of eleven exhibition spaces that house the permanent collection and temporary exhibitions, as well as a documentation center, a store, and an educational department.

El Museo, dedicado a la obra del pintor, es una pinacoteca que conserva y expone al público la mayor parte del trabajo del artista grancanario. Se encuentra enclavado en el conjunto arquitectónico del Pueblo Canario, en el barrio de Ciudad Jardín, con edificaciones que recuerdan a la arquitectura tradicional canaria. Este conjunto, a las puertas de uno de los pulmones de la ciudad, el Parque Doramas, se construyó según los planos del hermano de Néstor, el arquitecto Miguel Martín Fernández de la Torre.

El edificio consta de once espacios expositivos que albergan la colección permanente y las exposiciones temporales, así como un centro de documentación, una tienda, y un departamento pedagógico.

Doramas Park is located in the heart of Garden City, a few metres away from the marina, next to Museo Nestor and the emblematic Santa Catalina Hotel. With a spanning 47.800 square metres, it shows local flora of the Canary Islands such as dragon trees, ficus, palm-trees and other local species. Its cascade fountains and the vast vegetation invite the visitor to relax after a tour day.

A un paso del Muelle Deportivo, en el corazón de Ciudad Jardín, se encuentra el Parque Doramas. Junto al Museo Néstor y el emblemático Hotel Santa Catalina ofrece un paisaje caracterizado por la flora de las Islas Canarias. Las Palmas de Gran Canaria The origin of these gardens, like the Parque Doramas as a whole, is in the wide and evocative landscaped areas that were drawn around the first Hotel Santa Catalina, in the late years of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

The gardens, perfectly suited to the British style of the late nineteenth century, are linked to the presence of the English colony on the island. In these gardens and Canary Island palm trees is the sculpture ‘Atis Tirma’, work of Manuel Bethencourt. The sculpture commemorates the legend of the ancient Canaries like Bentejui and Faycan, who preferred to die cast down rather than surrender to the troops sent by the Catholic Monarchs in 1483.

El origen de estos jardines, como los del Parque Doramas en general, se encuentra en los amplios y sugerentes espacios ajardinados que se trazaron en torno al primer Hotel Santa Catalina, en los últimos años del siglo XIX y primeros del XX. Los jardines, muy al gusto británico de finales del siglo XIX están ligados a la presencia de la colonia inglesa en la isla.

En los jardines se encuentra el conjunto escultórico ‘Atis Tirma’, obra de Manuel Bethencourt, que recuerda la leyenda de los aborígenes isleños, como Bentejuí y Faycán, que prefirieron morir despeñados antes que entregarse a las tropas enviadas por los Reyes Católicos en 1483.

Next to the Pueblo Canario the visitors will feel themselves transported into the Belle Époque years of the city by Santa Catalina Hotel and its remarkable colonial-style façade built in 1882 meeting the demands of accommodation by British tourists.

The Elder Museum of Science and Technology offers the possibility to enjoy science live. It is located on one of the most popular areas of the city, the Santa Catalina Park, next to the cruise pier and near from Las Canteras Beach. It is a historic heritage building which back in the early nineteenth century were the depots of Elder shipping company.

The museum has exhibition halls full of interactive parts and modules; a planetarium, workshops, a glasshouse with ecosystems of the Canaries and a special room for kids. In addition, it has a large format screening and conference room.

Santa Catalina Park is the gateway to the city for travellers arriving by sea to Puerto de La Luz. This is the first picture encountered by cruise guests who landfall at the nearby Santa Catalina cruise pier. Its location, between the Port and the beach Las Canteras is privileged. In the park, life unfolds around kiosks and terraces. There is also a playground, and two emblematic buildings who have witnessed the British port trade, the Elder and Miller buildings. Santa Catalina Park has always been a reference in the daily life and a tourist meeting point. It homes the House of Tourism, a city’s heritage building designed by Nestor Martín Fernandez de la Torre and his brother, architect Miguel Martin Fernandez de la Torre.

Néstor Martín-Fernández de la Torre sketched out the first designs for the future Tourism House back in 1935. In 1944, the first building work was carried out under the management of his brother, Miguel. Together with the Pueblo Canario, the Casa Fataga and the Hotel Santa Catalina, it shaped the model of so called Neocanarian Architecture in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. This building is included in the city’s Architectural Heritage Catalogue.

It features a tourist information office with innovative customer service, with high speed wifi connection and a tourist guide service to guarantee a personal touch for tourists of all different languages. Las Palmas de Gran Canaria The Castle of La Luz, in La Isleta, facing the Port of La Luz and Las Palmas, is considered as the island’s oldest defensive construction. The current fortress was built is the sixteenth century. It was declared National Historic Monument in 1941, being restored on the ’60, when new elements like the exterior moat were added.

It is situated in a beautiful garden area with a playground. Next to the castle, we can visit the Church of Our Lady of La Luz. Castillo de La Luz, en La Isleta, frente al Puerto de La Luz y de Las Palmas, está considerado como la construcción defensiva más antigua de la isla. La fortaleza actual se construyó en el siglo XVI. Fue declarado Monumento Histórico Nacional en 1941, siendo restaurado en la década de 1960, fecha en la que se incorporaron nuevos elementos, como el foso exterior.

Se encuentra situado en un magnífico espacio ajardinado que cuenta con parque infantil. Junto al castillo podemos visitar la iglesia de la Virgen de La Luz.

Since its opening in 1997, its name is linked to the unforgettable tenor born in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Architect Oscar Tusquets idealised it as a big fortress and sculptor Juan Bordes created a powerful sculptural set inspired on Las Canteras Beach as a ‘symbolic theatre of the sea’.

The Symphonic and Chamber Halls of the Auditorium are the common scenarios for the best international music, both classical and modern. At the beginning of the year, it is the home of the Canary Islands Music Festival. The borough is connected to the rest of the city through the seafront avenue, which allows it to be reached on foot or bicycle thanks to its cycle-lane.

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria One of the heritage references of the city is located in San Cristobal district: the tower of San Pedro Martir, Historic-Artistic Heritage, affectionately known as Castle of San Cristobal. It is a watchtower built the 1577 and rebuilt in 1638. It served on the defence of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in the sixteenth century and had a military use until the nineteenth century.

Una de las referencias patrimoniales de la ciudad se encuentra en el barrio de San Cristóbal: la Torre de San Pedro Mártir, Monumento Histórico Artístico, y popularmente conocido como Castillo de San Cristóbal. Es una torreta de vigilancia construida el 1577 y reconstruida en 1638. Participó en la defensa de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria en el siglo XVI y hasta el XIX tuvo un uso militar.

A few kilometres from the town centre, the Viera y Clavijo Botanical Garden, also known as Canary Garden, homes in a complete example of the botanical wealth of the Canary Islands. This haven of peace for the senses is also a botanical institution and a centre for the conservation and research of the flora of Macaronesia (Canary Islands, Madeira, Azores, and Cape Verde). Covering an area of 27 hectares, it is considered the largest botanical garden in Spain.

A stroll around the garden, projected by botanist Eric R. Sventenius in 1952, allows the visitor to see and get to know a wide example of the endemic flora of the Canaries amidst paths, caves and waterfalls. The place, whose name comes after Canarian historian, biologist and writer of the eighteenth century, José Viera y Clavijo, opens its doors daily from 9:00 to 18:00.

A pocos kilómetros del centro de la ciudad, el Jardín Botánico Viera y Clavijo, también conocido como Jardín Canario, acoge una completa muestra de la riqueza botánica de las Islas.

Este remanso de paz para los sentidos es a la vez una institución botánica y un centro para la conservación e investigación de la flora de la Macaronesia (Canarias, Madeira, Azores y Cabo Verde). Con una superficie de 27 hectáreas, está considerado el Jardín Botánico más grande de España.

Un paseo por el jardín, proyectado por el botánico Eric R. Sventenius en 1952, permite visitar y conocer gran parte de la flora endémica de las Islas Canarias entre senderos, cuevas y cascadas. El recinto que debe su nombre al historiador, biólogo y escritor canario del siglo XVIII, José Viera y Clavijo, abre sus puertas los siete días de la semana de 09.00 a 18.00 horas.
