Picture yourself standing in front of an elegant gate that leads to a beautiful mansion. In this mansion is a grand party or celebration. A graduation, a wedding, an anniversary. Anything. Now imagine yourself standing there, debating whether you should open the gate and walk in or just go home. Your date backed out last minute. You were not expecting the celebration to be so formal so you think your attire is not good enough. You think you arrived to late. Whatever the reason may be, you are still standing before the gate. Now, I want you to compare that to taking a risk. More specifically, compare this with leadership. It could be running for a leadership position in Circle K. It could be running I strongly encourag for a Student Government Association position. It could be trying for that promotion at considered takin work. Anything that requires you to make a little risk for something more. Has anyone ever asked you to consider running for a leadership position? If so, did you ever think about why you would not qualify for the job? Well, it has happened to me and that's why I wanted to share my story with you. Around this time last year, I had planned on running for a leadership position at my home Circle K club of UW-Stevens Point. Unfortunately, I was ill election day and there was some miscommunication about my application for a position. So I lost that opportunity. Then at District Convention, I was asked to consider running for Chippewa Lieutenant Governor. Automatically, I panicked inside because my mind went straight to all the things I could fail at. However, I almost did it just because nobody was running for the position. But luckily for me, Sam Brewington expressed interested while she was all the way in Spain. I had felt so relieved because I knew she would do an excellent job as Lieutenant Governor. But then a few district or former district board members encouraged me to apply for a district chair position. I was very hesitant at first because I, again, went straight to what could go wrong and all these awful thoughts about how I was going to run this district straight into the ground. I also had, and still do, have a huge fear of rejection. But, I pushed those thoughts aside and ended up applying for the position of Membership Development and Growth Chair which ended up being the best decision I could have ever made for myself.

Being on the district board, I had the honor of working closely beside some incredible developing leaders who continually inspired me to grow as a person. There was so much support and encouragement between one another which created such a safe, welcoming environment at board meetings. Everyone was so understanding about life struggles and was all about building people up rather than tearing people down. But it wasn't just the friendships that made this year so great. We all shared a common goal, and that goal is to see the district grow and succeed. As each person developed in professionalism and leadership, we all worked hard to make things possible and it was definitely rewarding to see all the hard work pay off. When Circle K'ers get together to do service, we all experience that "high" from making a difference in the world. However, I got to see all the planning in action and it truly was a beautiful thing. Lastly, the most important thing I noticed while being on the board as development. I got to see so much growth and development in not only others but myself as well. Being on the board, I was presented with so many opportunities for personal and professional growth. I got to experience what it's like to plan a bigger event. I learned how to ask for help and delegate tasks which is an incredibly difficult thing to do, if you haven't done it before. I had the opportunity to drive myself to a destination ge anyone that even further than one hour away by myself. I slowly gained confidence in myself which, if ng a risk to do so. you have ever experienced low self-esteem or low self-confidence, doesn't happen over night. But, it is possible. I have seen it and experienced it myself. Lets go back to the situation I asked you to picture before. Standing at that gate, you may be thinking about all the things that could possibly go wrong. But, always keep in mind there is always the chance that things could go right! You could meet someone new at the party. You might receive genuine compliments on your outfit and be asked where you bought it from. Maybe the party was slow to start and your presence is what really got the party going. Truth is, nobody will ever know the outcome. That's why I strongly encourage anyone that even considered taking a risk to do so. Life won't be perfect and you are human. So, mistakes and rejection is bound to happen. But it's up to you to have the faith to open that gate and grab a hold of the many opportunities right in front of you.

Though the Badgers suffered a 1-4 loss against Michigan, much fun was had by Kiwanis family members, who gathered in Madison, Wisconsin for the annual Kiwanis Family Hockey Night on Friday, February 12th. The event aims to bring Kiwanis Family members together and raise money for the ELIMINATE Project, a charity that provides Maternal Neonatal Tetanus (MNT) vaccines to women in developing countries. In total, $500 was raised for the ELIMINATE Project through ticket sales, and 3 branches of the Kiwanis Family were present. Highlights of the game included the celebration of the Wisconsin’s one goal, the tasty stadium food, and the always-satisfying Zamboni between periods. We hope to see you back again next year to enjoy an intense hockey game and support this important cause!

District Convention (DCON) was the first event that I attended where I really got to see what we really accomplished as a group. It shows a whole new world to what Circle K is all about. It leads each attendee to realize that there is so much more to CKI than just the service projects, and that is an amazing thing. After attending so many DCONs in the past, I am even more excited to share this one with you. District Convention brings so much excitement, energy, and passion out of each and every person there. Circle K is an absolutely amazing organization and you can see it on full display at DCON! Now, what should you expect out of DCON weekend? Well, Friday night is full of fellowship activities, prizes, and an amazing opening session that features club skits! This is also where we get to see our first batch of nominees running for District Board positions. The night will end with our first round of caucusing. Every candidate that is running for a position gets the opportunity to speak about their goals for the position and club members will have the opportunity to ask them important questions (so plan ahead!). Saturday is a busy day that starts with service projects and workshops, and leads into a Kiwanis Family Luncheon. At the luncheon, we will have the opportunity to hear speakers from different Kiwanis Family branches. We will also get to see some awards given out, such as the Outstanding Faculty Advisor Award. The afternoon will go back to business and caucusing, which will then lead into House of Delegates (HOD) in the afternoon. House of Delegates is where schools will actually have the chance to vote for the District Board positions. It is really exciting because they will become the leaders for the next Circle K year! Following elections, members can get ready to attend the formal Presidents’ and Parents’ Banquet. To me, this is the most exciting part of the weekend (and not just because I get to get dressed up). All of the hard work and dedication from clubs gets celebrated at this event. It includes a keynote speaker, a delicious meal, and an awards ceremony for every award imaginable! After we celebrate (and take lots of photos), there will be a super fun dance where we can have even more fellowship with our CKI friends! Sunday is a short day with a formal farewell session. There will be a few more awards, the retirement of the old board, the instillation of the new board, a video sharing all of your accomplishments, and lost of crying (maybe not….probably from me). Though it sounds pretty straight forward, I promise that nothing will compare to what you take away from this weekend. It is worth it! If you haven’t registered yet, that’s okay because we have onsite registration! If you know you will be coming, just shoot Janet.degroot@gmail.com an email and we’ll gather all of the details we need to ensure a great weekend for you!
