WUM’s Super Service Spring Fling Recap By Stephanie Van Kampen You can definitely say that Wisconsin-Upper Michigan Circle K members had a “super” awesome time at this year’s superhero-themed Spring Fling conference. Held at Camp Wawbeek in the Wisconsin Dells, Spring Fling offered attendees the opportunity to do fun service projects, meet WUM members from other clubs, learn more about this fantastic organization through workshops, and much more! We kicked off Friday night with some fun small- and largegroup ice breakers, after which everyone got to partake in some friendly competition during the photo scavenger hunt. We ended Friday night with a showing of Guardians of the Galaxy, and many continued the tradition of grabbing a late night Denny’s dinner. Saturday was a beautiful day for camp service projects, as many members were outside doing yard work and helping clean up Camp Wawbeek to help prepare them for summer. Following lunch, members attended fun, engaging, and informative workshops, including K-Family/CKI 101, Scrapbooking/Bulletin Editor, a crafts-related service project, Superhero Jeopardy, and more! Later that afternoon, committee meetings and divisional meetings were held (contact Governor Five if you’re interested in joining a committee, it’s not too late!). Lots of laughs were had at the mascot auction and school skits, which were followed by a dance, s’mores by the bonfire, and an unforgettable game of Mafia. On Sunday morning, we ended our time together by watching a slideshow of pictures of the weekend, sharing our favorite parts of the Spring Fling, and, of course, finishing the weekend with a group hug. Over the weekend, we were able to raise over $1,000 for Camp Wawbeek, so thank you to all who participated in fundraisers! A big thank you goes to John Lee for all of his hard work and commitment to Circle K as the UW-Eau Claire advisor over the years. Thanks to everyone who attended; I hope you all had a fantastic weekend! We hope to see you all at the next district event, MERP, on July 18th in Stevens Point!

Applying for International Awards By Five Yang

This year at International Convention outstanding clubs will have the opportunity to be recognized for their achievements in the 2014-2015 Circle K year. The award categories include: Club Achievement, Club Video, Preferred Charities and Service Partners, Single Service, The Eliminate Project, and Outstanding Kiwanis Family Relations. For applications, please visit the CKIx Contests and Awards website. I am a firm believer that we belong the greatest Circle K District. Whether it is at the club or district level, everything we do is truly WUM-derful and incomparable. Off the top of my head, a few clubs and events that should be recognized are Alverno’s Midnight Masquerade, UW-Whitewater unmatchable relationship with the Whitewater Kiwanis Breakfast Club, and UW-La Crosse’s “Be the Match” National Marrow Donor Program. I strongly encourage and would like to challenge every club to apply for at one least award. You all deserve to be recognized for your hard work at the international level. Please remember this is for the 2014-2015 year. You will have the chance to apply for awards at CKIx 2016 for anything that is on or after April 1, 2015. To submit awards, clubs can mail in applications (postmarked by June 1 to ensure arrival for judging) or have one of our district’s attendees submit it on the first day of Convention at the registration table. Please contact Five at fiveyang01@gmail.com if you do not know any WUM CKIx 2015 attendees. Good luck and as always, let me know if you have questions!

Applications must be postmarked by June 1st!

Honoring John Lee By Kirstie Polzin

This year’s Spring Fling was an incredibly special one, especially for one Kiwanis advisor. John Lee, the faculty advisor for UW-Eau Claire’s Circle K club, celebrated his last event as their Kiwanis Advisor. While many tears were shed, there were tons of memories and stories shared. If you’ve been to Camp Wawbeek, you know John as “that guy that comes in on Saturday morning and sings”. If you haven’t, it’s quite the experience! On Sunday morning during the goodbye hug, everyone joined in singing one of his songs - “You Are My Sunshine”. At lunch on Saturday, the district presented John with a scrapbook filled with pictures and notes from Circle K members and Kiwanians around the district. Even more special was the announcement of a very special change for the district. Every year at District Convention, one faculty advisor is honored with the “Outstanding Faculty Advisor Award” for their dedication to our organization. Beginning this 2015-2016 Circle K year, the district will be presenting the “John Lee Outstanding Faculty Advisor Award” to honor the incredible amount of time and dedication John has given to WUM Circle K over the past 25+ years.

UW- Eau Claire’s Annual Kiwanis Family Piknik This annual event was held on May 1st, 2015 in Boyd Park. The K-Family Piknik event began about 7 years ago as a replacement event for the “K-Family Gala” formal dinner and dance, which had declining attendance and was becoming too costly. However, this year’s attendance for the Piknik was up from previous years, showing how much this event continues to grow! There were Circle K members from UW-Eau Claire, Eau Claire Kiwanians, prospective Circle K members, and even Fred and Nancy Dietze came from Hudson, WI to join in on the fun. In previous years outdoor games such as ladder golf and kubb were played. However, due to some rainy and chilly weather, board games (like Apples to Apples) were played instead of yard games. A silent auction with donations going towards the Eliminate Project was also held during the Pinkik. To contribute to the Piknik theme, the dinner served was a “cook-out” style meal with hot dogs, hamburgers, potato salad, watermelon, and cake. The K-Family Piknik will be held again next year, and all WUM Circle K clubs are welcome to come and celebrate with us!

“The Piknik was begun with the purpose of maintaining K-Family relations locally at an affordable price, while also serving as a fundraiser for the "Iodine Deficiency Disorder" and "Eliminate" projects of Kiwanis International.” – John Lee, Faculty Advisor for UWEC Circle K from 1990-2015.

Leadership By Lia Slepicka I think that everyone should send in an application for Leadership Academy. I sent my application in just to see what would happen and I ended up having an experience that was life changing. Although I cannot tell you exactly what happened at camp, I can give you a little sneak peek at what my week was like. When I arrived to the airport in Indiana, there was just a bunch of college students sitting around and no one knew anyone else. While we all waited for the bus to take us to camp, we played some games to get to know each other. I did not know what to expect from the moment I got to camp, there was no cell service or internet I thought that it was going to be a rough week. Once I checked in, I got assigned a cabin with a couple of other Circle Kers; I didn't know anyone going into this trip, but made friends right away with my cabin mates. Throughout the week we learned different types of leadership skills and played a lot of games that show different rolls and to help with team building.

9 19

Academy

There is also a day where we were able to give back to the camp and do some service projects. I ended up with a group that got to go garden and help pick veggies, which we ended up eating for dinner. Everyone gets put into small groups that they spend a lot of time with for workshops and reflection periods. My small group turned into one big family by the end of the week and I would have to say that it was the hardest thing to say goodbye to all the friends that I made. To this day my small group is in constant contact with each other helping out with whatever problems need solving. The experience that I had was amazing and I made life long friends from around the United States and even some girls from Aruba. So send in the application and see if you have what it takes to become a leader! For more information, visit http://circlek.org/Leadership/LeadershipAcademy.aspx

Membership, Education, and Recruitment Program by Elizabeth Le

The Membership Education and Recruitment Program (MERP) is an ARRR-some event. It serves as our only district event in the summer, and it is focused on learning fun, effective ways to recruit and retain members for your club. Even though some may have attended recruitment/retention workshops at other events, there is not event like MERP. Club officers will benefit from attending because it gives in-depth information that can't always be covered during one 30-45 minute workshop. Just because MERP is very useful for officers, doesn’t mean that it isn’t a great event for members as well! Members will have the opportunity to learn more about Circle K and how your role as a member is vital to your club! This kind of information is useful for not only student organizations but also in other parts of life.

Kiwanis Family Baseball Game By Kirstie Polzin

If you’ve never been to a Kiwanis Family Baseball Game (KFBG), this is a great time to start! Join us in Milwaukee on August 9th as we watch the Brewers take on the Cardinals, and get to know other members of the Kiwanis Family! A huge part of Circle K is building relationships with other members of our clubs, Kiwanis clubs, and all of the other branches of the Kiwanis family. This is a chance to relax and have some fun, while still helping out a great cause! $4 from each ticket purchase will be donated to the ELIMINATE project to help them reach their goal to eliminate Maternal/Neonatal Tetanus (MNT). Another bonus of attending this game-every member gets a free Bob Uecker bobblehead! Keep an eye out for further details, and if you have any questions, please check out our Facebook event (Kiwanis Family Baseball Game 2015) email me at polzinkk.cki@gmail.com. I can’t wait to see you all there!

Summer Fundraising Ideas Howdy WUM Circle K! This is your District Fundraising Chair Taylor Moret with a few ideas for summer fundraisers! I've included ones that you can do on both an individual or club level! I look forward to seeing the funds you guys raise! If you need any more ideas, please feel free to contact me at wumfundraising@gmail.com or 608-4123518. During the summer there is an increase of travel and outdoor activities. That being said, here are a few things you can do: • • •

• • •

• •

Collect Aluminum cans to sell. Some groups set up collection cages so that members of the community can donate theirs as well. Sell Kwik Trip Gas Cards through the scrip program (I hope to have some to distribute at MERP) Contact a local store to co-sponsor a hot dog & brat stand. Some stores will donate everything you need and let you keep all the money; you just have to find someone to man the stand! The Generic Car Wash - Get some soap and hose, and go nuts! Have a Rummage Sale - Get all of your members to donate stuff they don't use anymore and host in in a free venue in the community. View events that take place in your community and see if you can get paid to help out. Some music festivals pay people to pick up the grounds at the end of the festival, and the EAA in Oshkosh pays people to operate their food and beverage stands! I can help you find some similar events if you are interested! Sell flower bulbs! Contact me on where to get them! You Scream, I Scream, We All Scream for Ice Cream! - Partner with DQ or Schwann's to get Dilly Bars/Treats to sell. Or talk to a Cherry Berry or similar about having an event where you get 15% of the profits.
