Being an identical twin, I was delighted to see that the Brecknock Little Theatre is putting on a production of Willy Russell’s ‘Blood Brothers’ on Friday 3rd and Saturday 4th May. We saw this marvellous show in London with our daughters in 2002, so it’s about time we saw it again.Trouble is, him indoors can only make the Friday and I can only make the Saturday. I wonder who will win?

News from Kirsty Williams AM We are very lucky to live in one of the most beautiful parts of the United Kingdom. I never take for granted the glorious countryside I represent. Tourism is a key industry in Brecon and Radnorshire; it directly and indirectly employs many people and brings huge inward investment into the area. Our towns and villages rely on tourists and we should encourage them to visit our beautiful sights. Sadly the tourism industry is not getting the support it needs from Powys County Council. As a result of the recent, Conservative supported, Shires Independent Group budget, the Tourism element of the budget was cut by £132,000. Powys’ six, community-run, Tourist Information Centres were put on notice that their funding could be drastically cut and that they should look for other sources of funding. Whilst of course I understand these are difficult

times financially, I feel it is massively short sighted to cut this vital funding to community organisations that bring much needed business to their respective areas. The funding that the six tourist information centres receive annually is a combined total of £67,500. A relatively very small sum considering the council has spent almost £100,000 on scaffolding for Brecon Leisure Centre. It seems to me that the service provided by these centres offer very good value for money and return on investment to the council. I have written to the leader of Powys County Council David Jones about this and also Edwina Hart AM, the minister responsible for tourism, asking if she will meet with the affected organisations. I will continue to support the tourist industry in Brecon and Radnorshire that is so vital to our rural economy and I hope Powys County Council and the Welsh Government will too.

News from Friends of Brecon & District Contact Association Walking in Circles without getting giddy. Has the psychiatrist gone mad? An introduction to labyrinth walking by Dr Kate Dufton at The George Hotel, Brecon, Wednesday 15 May 2013, 7pm, £5 (Friends £2). Dr Kate Dufton likes to walk in circles. She will explain how she does this without getting giddy when she talks to the Friends of BDCA as part of their programme of raising awareness of mental heath issues in and around Brecon. Come and find out why she is so interested in walking labyrinths at the George Hotel on Wednesday 15 May, 7.00pm. Kate’s interest in labyrinths developed through exploring walking and the landscape as a resource for meditation, mindfulness and thinking things through.This comes from an increasing conviction that development and healing often comes from doing simple things differently rather than from anything clever and complex. Labyrinths are everywhere including Lynne Allbutt’s gardens and Mark

Wallinger’s artworks in the London tube system, medieval cathedrals and Cornish islands, the Duddon valley in the Lake District and Edinburgh and Canterbury Universities. They have had multiple uses at different times and in different cultures. The talk will introduce the labyrinth patterns and how they differ from mazes and give some ideas how we can use them to explore possibilities in ourselves and our lives. This will also touch on some of the ways we can understand the meaning of madness and thus how we can work with it. Everyone is welcome to come along to the George Hotel to hear Kate give an introduction to labyrinth walking. Top quality food & great service My husband Robert and I visited the recently refurbished Pilgrims Tea Rooms for lunch one wet and windy Sunday in April. Olivia introduced herself to us and showed us to our pine table by the window overlooking the herb garden and Brecon Cathedral. She brought us a jug of water and asked us to have a look at the chalk boards on the opposite wall to see what we would like to order for our lunch.The starter was Cajun Sweet Potato Soup with homemade bread, but we wanted to leave room for the main course and a pudding, so we decided to skip this course.The main courses on offer were Roast Welsh Lamb, Roast Breast of Chicken and a Mediterranean Vegetable Bake, all served with roast potatoes and seasonal vegetables. Situated above the chalk boards are lovely old photographs of Brecon. Also adorning the newly painted café walls are wonderful works of art by local talented artists which will be updated every 3 to 4 months. Pilgrims is now a venue for The Big Art Share. I nearly went for the Pork, because I just love crackling. However, after much deliberating I chose the Roast Chicken because Olivia said that I could have crackling with it! Thank you Olivia, you are a real star. Robert chose the Roast Pork with Apple Sauce. This is my first ever review for Local Beacon, but when I do reviews for the Wye Local, our sister publication covering Hay, Talgarth and the surrounding villages, my guest and I try to order different dishes. Won’t be a very interesting review if we all have the same now will it? The food was delicious and hot.The Wye Local readers amongst you will know how fussy I am about my food arriving hot! Accompanying vegetables were oven-roasted carrots and sweet potato, cabbage, new potatoes, peas, cauliflower cheese and good stuffing. A jug of hot gravy was also placed on the table, even though gravy was served on the plate. They must know I like lots of gravy! The Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon was very drinkable. Other dishes on the menu included

Quiche and salad,Toasties and Sandwiches. Pilgrims, who are open daily, also cater well for vegetarians. Janet Williams, the Manager and Franchise owner, has been professionally involved in catering for 40 years, and has a great reputation in the Brecon area as a baker and cake maker. Janet is now handing over the reins to her son David, and he is continuing the high standard of serving top quality, home cooked, locally sourced food. Janet says that just because they are situated a few steps from Brecon Cathedral, one doesn’t have to be religious to come and eat here! I could tell that Janet is very proud of what she has achieved here, and rightly so! Olivia, also a Williams but no relation, is a very friendly and enthusiastic young lady who oversees the Marketing side of Pilgrims and has worked here since she left school, even through her time at University. All the staff here are friendly and polite and the service is second to none. The homemade puddings were to die for.The Brioche and Butter Pudding which I had with ice-cream was absolutely wonderful. Robert’s Red Berry Pavlova with cream looked extremely enticing. He had finished it before I could even ask to try some. He obviously liked it! The attractive 16th Century stone and timbered Tithe Barn also houses the fab Gift Shop and the very smart and interesting new Heritage Centre which can accommodate up to 60 diners for when Pilgrims is extra busy, or for private bookings. Outside seating for 50 guests, spread out around the herb garden and beyond is delightful. If you are looking for a place to eat with great facilities, top quality food and fantastic service then look no further than Pilgrims Tea Rooms. You won’t be disappointed. Wild in May

Protecting wildlife for the future

Most of our summer migrant birds are two or three weeks late this year and all the more welcome. Among the first to arrive are Wheatears from central Africa. In size, posture and actions a Wheatear looks quite like a slim Robin, alert and bright-eyed. Flying away it shows a white rump and black-tipped tail, a hwit aers in Anglo-Saxon. Wheatears typically breed on open stony uplands choosing a nest-hole among rocks, in a stone wall or rabbit burrow. They were once much more widespread and common, and the British Trust for Ornithology is concerned that the species continues to decline. It is asking volunteers to look for Wheatears and closely-related Whinchats and Stonechats this summer. You could find out more about the Wales Chat Survey at www.bto.org. Chats, Ravens and birds of prey are likely sightings when Andrew King, the County Bird Recorder leads a morning walk around spectacular Craig Cerrig Gleisiad on 12 May. â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;CCGâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; is beside the Brecon to Merthyr road before the Storey Arms. Raising over £17,000

Crickhowell based charity Arts Alive Wales hosted an art auction which raised over £17000 that will go towards their community arts programme. Arts Alive Wales Director, Justine Wheatley, comments: “Arts Alive Wales receives no regular funding so the auction is a vital way of raising money for our community programme, which is targeted at vulnerable groups and individuals. In 2013/14 we will be working closely with young homeless people and mental health groups to enable them to have opportunities to participate in arts activities and to help improve their wellbeing and resilience. The auction makes this work possible, and Arts Alive would like to say a big thank you to all the artists, guests, volunteers and staff that helped make the event such a resounding success.”

George Osbourne’s £130bn ‘Help To Buy’ scheme is the latest move by the Chancellor to get the housing market moving. It may well work, but will it create another housing bubble?

The Scheme consists of two parts. The first is a shared-equity programme which kicks in from 1 April 2013. Buyers with a 5% deposit can borrow a further 20% from the taxpayer interest free for 5 years. This leaves the buyer only needing to raise 75% with a bank or building society at what the Government hopes will be competitive rates. The property must be a new-build and there is a ceiling value of £600,000. This part of the programme only applies in England.

The second part of the Scheme which is to launch in January is a mortgage guarantee. This will cover all properties in England and Wales up to a value of £600,000. Here a borrower with at least a 5% deposit will have the taxpayer effectively guaranteeing 15% of the mortgage, if the borrower defaults then the state bears some of the losses. This added security is intended to also encourage lending at more competitive rates.

These Schemes are likely to benefit many. It should help buyers with small deposits get a foothold on the property ladder. It may also help homeowners with a small amount of equity to remortgage onto more competitive deals. And it will most likely benefit all homeowners from increased house values. The Scheme has been billed as an affordable solution to UK’s housing problem. The big question is what will happen when the Scheme ends? It is hoped that it will ensure the recovery of the housing sector.The risk is that it will be too successful and create a new housing bubble.

News from local W I s POWYS BRECKNOCK FEDERATION OF WOMEN’S INSTITUTES W I members are often associated with singing Jerusalem and making jam, in fact being very domesticated, but there is another side to them as well. On the practical side a ‘Patchwork Quilting Workshop’ was held at the County W I office under the guidance of Francis Isaacs, an expert quilter, who had previously attended courses at the W I College, Denman. On the other hand, prior to Easter, a Prize Bingo evening was organized at Bishops Meadow, Brecon. It was a ‘full house’ in more ways than one! There were participants sitting at every available table. Callers were Gomer and Lynda Probert. Prizes had been donated by members throughout the county. Another very enjoyable evening was arranged by the county ‘Menter Iaith’ committee. The speaker was Mrs Angela Skym from Carmarthenshire who spoke about her hat collection. After giving a brief history on millinery she proceeded to show the enormous number of hats she had collected over the decades, many of which she modelled. Her stories of how she had acquired them and when she wore them were hilarious. Chairman, Jennifer Thomas, expressed thanks to Mrs Skym. Before leaving for home, members were able to sample Welsh cakes, Bara Brith and locally baked bread spread with Welsh butter. PRIORY W I As usual the meeting began with the singing of Jerusalem, after which President Marion Carrod gave a special ‘welcome back’ greeting to Pam Jones, Eileen Jones, Margaret Lewis and Laura Newnes. Best wishes were expressed to all members who were unable to be present through ill health. Those present were asked to support Priory Quiz team at the county Quiz Final to be held at the end of the month. The guest speaker for the evening was Mr Keith Noble, an avid ornithologist. Just over five years ago, he and his wife returned to Brecon from Sussex and immediately joined Brecknock Wildlife Trust. The subject of his talk was the wildlife he had observed and photographed in his garden. He has created a small pond which is now frequented by various special species of aquatic life. He showed how he collects moths at night and collates information which he sends to Dr Norman Lowe, the Trust’s Entomological Recorder.

Various types of butterflies were photographed and members did not realize that there are some that can survive the winter. A large number of birds visit the garden, several of which have migrated from Russia, Scandinavia and Africa. Mr Noble’s enthusiasm for his subject was infectious, eliciting numerous questions.The photographs he showed were superb. He was thanked by Maureen Evans. LLANGASTY W I Twenty three members attended the meeting on Weds 3rd April at 7pm. Following the close of business, Mrs Mavis Griffiths gave a most informative and entertaining illustrated talk on ‘The Welsh in Patagonia’. Mrs Griffiths had spent six months in Patagonia teaching Welsh. She explained how Welsh Nonconformists had sailed in 1865 to escape religious persecution. After a two month voyage they landed at what is now Puerto Madran, they then travelled for four days over scrubland to a disused fort where the town of Rowson now stands. The group was in dire straits as they had little in the way of food or shelter. After the local Teheulche Indians had observed the new arrivals and decided that they presented no threat, they came to their aid and saved them from disaster. The area has five to seven days rain annually so irrigation is of the utmost importance.The temperature varies from 38°C in February to -6°C in August and there is always a strong wind to tolerate. Education is of a high standard with good schools and excellent examination results. At the end of the school day both the Argentine National Anthem (which has many verses) and the Welsh National Anthem are sung. Food is relatively cheap as is fuel, cakes are extremely sweet, and large meals with possibly a Kilo of meat being consumed in a day. (Heart valve by-pass surgery is not uncommon in 20-30 year olds). Mrs Griffiths closed her talk and was asked to judge the competition, which was ‘A souvenir of a welsh town’, was won by Mrs Hazel Price. The raffle was won by Mrs Ann Hornung. A party with a twist ... by Lisa Marie Badham Last month I organised a party at my home with a few friends, but one slightly different from the norm. Gina Murray, local Clairvoyant Medium was the star guest.This was a Psychic Party! Nibbles were made, drinks on chill and the girls arrived. We were all excited to see what Gina had in store for us. Gina came to say hello before setting up in my annex. I thought here she would have the peace she needed. Us ladies hadn't seen each other for a while so there was much chit chat to be had! Sure enough the wine was poured and the party had started. One by one we took it in turn to go and have our individual readings. As everyone is unique we all had different experiences with Gina. hot griddle pan and drizzle them with the olive oil. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper and cook for 4-5 minutes. Add the tomato slices and continue cooking for a 2-3 minutes, or until the potatoes have coloured and are cooked through. To serve, pile the griddled vegetables onto a serving plate, top with the lamb chops and drizzle with a vinaigrette over.

Preparation method Bring a pan of salted water to the boil. For the pan-fried lamb chops, rub the olive oil into the lamb chops and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Heat a griddle pan over a high heat, add the chops and grill for 3-4 minutes on each side, or until cooked to your taste. Remove from the pan, place onto a warm plate, and cover to keep warm. For the potato and tomato salad, boil the sliced potatoes and asparagus in the boiling, salted water for 3-4 minutes, or until they are tender but still firm. Drain well and set the asparagus aside. Artbeat Brecon Brecon artists’ and craftspeoples’ group “Artbeat” has held an art festival in the town for several years. In 2012 this was a week in October, and residents and visitors may have noticed various events taking place over the half-term week. Workshops in the town’s galleries, shops, the Cathedral, Pilgrims and take pART were well attended, although those events held out-of doors were badly affected by the dreadful weather. In 2013 it is planned that Brecon Arts Festival will last for the whole of October, and will have more events, workshops, exhibitions and demonstrations than ever before. True to the event’s title, Brecon Arts Festival is intended to include all the Arts: painting, spoken word, music, dance, even mime if you fancy! Many events will be organised to let adults and children participate, at no cost or for a small fee to cover materials. The members of Artbeat would appreciate suggestions for events, particularly if you are a local

Cariad’s Column Lots of people liked my last column. Yippee. The Easter Bunny brought me some chocolate eggs but they left a note on them saying that Mummy should At the park on the swings eat them as I am too small. The Easter weekend was great fun, we had an Easter egg hunt and I got to see lots of my cousins. I went to a birthday party at Eardisley Village Hall. My friend called Pheobe was 4 years old. There was a big bouncy castle but I was too small for that so I played with the balloons. Daddy made one stick to my head. Mummy took me to the first Car Boot Sale. Lots of people knew my name and said they’d seen my column. I came home with some funky dungarees. After Bizzie Lizzie’s Nursery, Mummy takes me to the swings if the weather is nice. I chuckle when she pushes me. Daddy goes on a big air plane soon, to Germany for work. I don’t mind too much as I get to go on holiday to Grannie and Grampies house. Mummy comes too and we get spoilit rotten. And guess what? Because I now have two teeth, I have my own toothbrush. Brushing my teethy-pegs is nice. See you next month. Love Cariad Mia Badham x

Creating Together Local project Creating Together is delighted to announce that it has been awarded almost a quarter of a million pounds, by the Big Lottery Fund. The organisation, managed by BCA Independent Advocacy Services, will use the £249,950 to continue to provide art and craft for adults with learning disabilities in Powys for the next three years, and to develop new activities in response to members’ needs. Starting in 2010, Creating Together has been providing weekly workshops in Brecon, Howey and Ystradgynlais. The members’ skills, knowledge and abilities have grown significantly by being able to access the groups and because of this, Creating Together has been able to hold successful exhibitions and craft stalls around south Powys over the last few years.

Don't forget Centre exists for locals as well as visitors Surrounded by the snow topped Black Mountains and Brecon Beacons it seems hard to believe that the cricket season is beginning. Daffodils are daring to open and there is a hint of green buds in the hedgerows which means that we may just be ready to put on some Spring finery in the countryside in time for the Walkers are Welcome walking festival in Talgarth and then the Hay Festival.The team at the Information and Resource Centre has not been idle, with two volunteers Jan Fowler and Rose Lewis attending the Local Ambassador workshop in the Town Hall, organised by the Brecon Beacons National Parks. From this the feedback to the rest of the team has been very useful together with the attractive file of information that is in the Centre for reference. Young George Hall is an addition to our team doing some work experience whilst he is looking for a permanent post. George has excellent computer skills and has been helping with some of the technical side of things with some of our customers. Another of our young volunteers Meriel Green has rolled up her sleeves, metaphorically speaking, to learn the computer code language to facilitate the work of setting up the new look Website for the Centre, which will be ready for the Summer season.

On Saturday the 25th May from 10.00am to 1.00pm the Information and Resource Centre will be holding an open morning to which everyone is warmly invited. Don't forget the Centre exists for locals as well as visitors. There will be tea, coffee and biscuits and the opportunity to meet some of the volunteers and look at the resources available in our computer room, including a colour printer, laminator, guillotine and other 'office' facilities, together with the selection of maps, guidebooks and crafts in our shop.

Before the Summer holidays begin the team of volunteers will be organising a â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;workâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; outing to visit some of the sights that we tell our visitors about. Continuing the theme of the Local Ambassador Scheme volunteers are keen to ensure that they are knowledgeable about the local environs and heritage in order to be able to inform visitors about this beautiful region.

Tuesday 4th June “Strawberry Hill and its place in the Gothic Revival” – Brecknock Decorative and Fine Art Society 2.30pm Theatr Brycheiniog. The author Horace Walpole regarded the Gothic style as a playful alternative to the classical Palladian style fashionable at the time. He transformed a house into a “Gothick” fantasy at Strawberry Hill, Twickenham. To Walpole’s great delight, the style became popular after he published a book entitled “A Description of Strawberry Hill”. Launce Gribbin will talk about the influence and the decline of Strawberry Hill, its revival and how it has influenced subsequent buildings and furnishing. Launce Gribbin is a painter and a lecturer in the history of art and architecture having studied art history at the Courtauld Institute.
