Just as we head for print, we receive the Press Release outlining the ‘Radical Overhaul for Secondary Education’. If you haven’t seen a copy, please go to our Facebook Page. In a nutshell, by September 2018 Gwernyfed High School will close with a new £50m education campus built in Brecon, the Beacons Learning Campus. If you’re reading this thinking, well I don’t have children in the education system so this won’t affect me, think again. The Gwernyfed High School is the centre of our community. If this closure goes ahead it won’t just be the education of our children (and future generations) hugely affected. Local businesses will suffer. If families are forced to send their children to Brecon or over the boarder to Herefordshire, these families will spend their money in this direction. House prices will decline. When new families look to buy in this area, something high up their list will be what schools are on offer. With no GHS they will look at other areas. We will lose our community. Over the years individuals and clubs have built up great sporting activities and classes, creating a great atmosphere among parents, grandparents and friends. With families forced to divide between schools this will be lost. Friendships will suffer. Children attending local primary schools build up an invaluable connection. These groups of youngsters will be spilt up. Powys County Council state ‘A radical overhaul of secondary education in Powys is needed to give learners a chance to achieve their potential’. Comparison of average points score at GCSE are as follows: Brecon 348, Fairfield 346, Kington 302 - with GHS 371.Yes Powys CC, GHS are already achieving their potential and offering a safe and enjoyable environment for our children. The list of negatives is endless. And right now, I can see no positives about sending my children to a ‘campus’. No parent wants their child sat in a car / bus day in day out. PCC have not taken our rural children into consideration. Yes Brecon needs a new school but a ‘campus’ is not the answer and closing a high preforming school like GHS is ludicrous. Please turn to the centre spread to read more on this subject. Lisa Marie Badham x

News from Talgarth by Cllr. William Powell Powys County Councillor for Talgarth Just as the countdown to Easter was starting to gather pace, with lambing getting underway in earnest, winter has decided to reassert itself over recent days, with several inches of snow in the Talgarth hinterland - and the A470 briefly closed to the North - at the time of writing. Whether or not this is in fact the last snow of spring will become clear by the time this column is published - but the imminent moving forward of our clocks to signal the advent of British Summer Time, and with it longer hours of light, is certainly set to gladden the hearts of many.
Town Council, to discuss the impacts of charging on residents and visitors - and a timeline for its implementation.
Last month, I reflected on the inevitable impact of the Welsh Local Government Settlement on us here in Powys. Now, the outcome is becoming clear. Unpalatable proposals such as the introduction of a car park charging regime in all Powys County Council owned car parks and a reduction in branch library opening hours are to go ahead. Whilst the latter is clearly preferable to the closure of smaller branch libraries, we need to have an understanding of what constitutes a critical mass in terms of our library service - as well as the options for volunteer or wider community support. As regards car parking charges, neighbouring towns have been eying up Talgarth’s free provision, notably in recent years as the economy of our town and its’ retail/ visitor offer have developed. Nevertheless, I believe that regeneration locally is still at an early stage and that the overall effect of a charging regime will be negative. The Welsh Liberal Democrat Group on Powys County Council opposed the budget which contained these proposals, as indeed did Labour and the Conservatives. However, as Wye Local readers will appreciate, Powys County Council’s Cabinet is now firmly in the control of “independent’’ Councillors - and so these are the proposals that, in all probability, will be implemented. I am calling for an early meeting between PCC officers and Talgarth
However, despite the apparent gloom that continues to assail us, there is much that we have reason to celebrate as spring approaches. In particular, the staff and pupils of Talgarth School continue to impress us with their enthusiasm and creativity. All who were present at the Eisteddfod on Friday, 27th February ahead of St David’s Day will have been struck by the quality and range of performance – in music, poetry and prose - as well as by the positive and good natured competition between the Houses. The delight demonstrated by the pupils participating, their collective pride in the school and the ease of their daily use of the Welsh language - which was a key Estyn priority at the time of our last inspection are all clear indicators that the school is going from strength to strength. I hope to see many of you around at community events over the Easter holidays. In the meantime, please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any feedback or issues of concern on: 07703 112113 or by email: william.powell@assembly. wales Alternatively, you can come along to my next advice surgery on Friday, 3rd April from 5:00pm at Talgarth Tourist Information & Resource Centre, which is unaffected by the current General Election campaign. Appointments are not essential – but getting in touch in advance may be useful if the issues are complex. You can also pop into the TiRC to request a call from me on any issue of concern. Happy Easter William

News from Glasbury Ward by Chris Davies Powys County Councillor for Glasbury After spending the past two years campaigning right across Brecon & Radnorshire it is hard to believe that the General Election is now only one month away. This month, I have been delighted to invite Senior Cabinet Ministers to the constituency to see the issues that are affecting us and also to listen to the concerns of our residents. These visits included The Secretary of State’s for Wales, Stephen Crabb MP;The Home Secretary,Theresa May MP;The First Secretary of State William Hague MP and the Secretary of State Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Liz Truss MP. I asked Liz Truss to visit Brecknock YFC and to put pressure on the Labour Welsh Government to reconsider their funding of this fantastic rural youth movement - Funding plans were restored for Wales YFC within 24 hours of her visit to Brecon! It was also a great pleasure to welcome Ed Vaizey MP the Minister for Technology to Brecon and I am delighted that we are now seeing speedy improvements in the installation of Superfast Broadband.
For the past fifteen years our constituency has been ‘off the radar’ of any government whether in Westminster or in Cardiff Bay. I am pleased to be able to make the difference and see B&R being put back on the map. I am a long way from finished as there is still so much more to do, so watch this space! As well as campaigning and showing the Westminster Government around our locality, I have been busy working on constituents concerns such as the poor delivery of Powys Home Care; The PCC Sports Centre reorganisation; The campaign to save Llanwrtyd Wells Health Centre and getting ready for the announcement from PCC on their Secondary School re-structuring. So much to keep me busy and a great deal more to do to make much needed improvements in the lives of residents of Brecon & Radnorshire. Contact me on any matter: 07855 752110 or email: cllr.chris.davies@powys.gov.uk May I wish you all a very Happy Easter Best wishes Chris

PIERIS Pieris are much underrated evergreen shrubs grown for their foliage and small, but profuse, urn-shaped flowers. Flower buds, often red in colour similar to those of Skimmia rubella, appear in winter or early spring and open to produce usually white, nodding, bell-like flowers later in the spring. Pieris leaves are small, lance shaped and dark green in colour when mature. However, it is the young foliage that catches the eye in late spring. In some varieties such as Pieris ‘Forest Flame’ and P. ‘Mountain Fire it is a brilliant red, in others such as P. ‘Prelude’ and P. formosa the new leaves are pink or bronze and work really well in lifting a shady corner. The same is true of the Pieris with cream edged, variegated leaves such as P. ‘Little Heath’ and P. ‘Variegata’. Some Pieris can grow into large shrubs over 3-4m in height in the right conditions but others like Pieris ‘Little Heath’ and P. ‘Bonfire’ are small, compact shrubs ideal for pots or the front of borders.

Pieris are hardy plants which grow best in shade or partial shade. They require and acid soil with plenty of ericaceous compost added at planting time and then from time to time as a surface mulch in spring. The smaller varieties do well in pots, also using ericaceous compost. Article supplied by The Old Railway Line Garden Centre, Three Cocks

The Great Yogurt debate! Do you ever find yourself absolutely stuck on what you should be doing whether this be in your training, what you eat, or even how to start because there is conflicting advice coming out through the media, ‘science’, research, books, and magazines (often within the same edition!), then consider this: The other day on Facebook a fellow fit pro asked this simple question just before she placed a food order online: ‘Fit Pro friends - Natural Greek Yoghurt - full fat or low fat?’ This prompted a 230 fold response (I kid you not), which swung between pseudo-science, some scarily low levels of accuracy, strong opinions, big falling outs, metaphorical slamming doors, swearing, nastiness, passion, making friends again, beating hearts (mine!), wonderful debate, people suddenly fancying a pie, and the absurd. It involved discussion over macros, calories, (whether they’re still valid), chemicals, sugar and salt, portion size, manufacturers manipulation, taste, preference, what you can add to it to improve it, that none of it matters if you can’t get the client on your side in the first place, whether dairy even has a place in the modern diet, cost, protein, satiety…
and more! Then ending with: ‘and we wonder why the general public are confused!’! The poor lass who originally asked was also advised “can you also check it’s grass FED and delivered in Eco trucks otherwise cancel it” (seriously tongue in cheek)! I didn’t state what I’d have favoured (what was the point?!) but I did helpfully add up all the results put forward by them, and they were as follows: Full Fat: 22, Low or zero fat: 6, Full AND organic: 2, Greek (and not ‘Greek style’): 1, Avoid all dairy: 1, Natural, but may be low fat: 2, ‘Everything in moderation, and keep that moderate’: 1, Sitting on the fence: 7, Quark: 1, Raw: 1, Unicorn yogurt made by fairies with a magic spoon at the time of an Eclipse: 1 (although this proved to be a surprisingly popular choice). So without adding my two penneth on that day, I can add this: If you’re ever stuck, be this in your training, nutrition, or mind set, go back a few 1000 years and the answers will often be there. Natural foods, eaten by mobile, moving humans, who’d have to make the odd fast chase to survive, going with the foods of the season, and getting fresh air, and a little sun. Local Talent: Llynfi Textiles Artist Name? Sue and Emily James. Type of Artist? Clothing designer-makers. Range of Products? An evolving womenswear collection, focused on using British Wool and sustainable, ethically sourced materials, all made by hand in Wales. Where can your products be purchased? Online www.llynfitextiles.co.uk or at The Old Electric Shop, Hay on Wye. Price range? £5 - £280. How long have you been an artist? We have both made our own clothes since we were old enough to hold a needle! We started working together when Emily finished university in 2007, but it wasn’t until 2012 that we put our first complete collection together. Where did you train or gain experience? We are both predominantly self-taught. Emily studied fashion and clothing at Herefordshire College of Art and then Surface Pattern Design at Swansea Metropolitan. What has been your proudest moment? Back in 2007, we became the first people in the UK to produce certified organic wool knitwear and later won a Gold award from the Soil Association for organic textiles –that was pretty exciting! But a close second was the first photo-shoot we did with local photographer Rosie Anne Prosser. Seeing our work presented so beautifully through someone else’s eyes was amazing. What would you class as ‘your masterpiece’? I love the way, with our ‘Airshow’ knit pattern we can get people to wear aeroplanes without realising that they are! The Swift dress was another triumph; the diagonal lines and bias cut means that it looks good on absolutely every body. Have you any future plans for your work? We have recently commissioned some really special wool cloth. It has been woven for us in West Wales from specially sourced Welsh Llanwenog and Black Mountain wool. I cant wait to start using it in the new collection …which we hope will, for the first time, include some menswear! We will also be retailing some of our wool fabrics, both online and from the Old Electric Shop in Hay on Wye, so if anyone out there wants to get creative then get in touch!
What advice would you give a local artist? Get out and about as much as you can and remember; you are your own worst critic! If you like it, someone else will too. What other local artists do you admire? Pip Wolf easily comes to mind; her creative work on local environmental issues and use of natural materials is inspirational; also, Jane Meredith and Mary Zammit for their work with people, textiles and natural materials. Artist statement: ‘Llynfi’ was born of a lifelong love of textiles, dress, design and a need to create, but a reluctance to become part of the fashion industry. With a focus on wool – our national fibre - we try to take a different approach to clothing, a sort of ‘cottage couture’. We love meeting the people who buy our clothes, and connecting people with how their clothes come to be. Our collection evolves naturally, with a nostalgic air and taking inspiration from slower times, and the countryside around us.

REVIEW
Karen Gunn Craniosacral Therapy Karen is based in the heart of Clyro village as well as consulting in Brecon and Llandrindod. Her treatment room in Clyro is a wonderful large beamed room, steeped in history with a fabulous open fire which keeps the room warm and cosy. What is Craniosacral Therapy? Is it is a gentle way of working with the body using light touch, the name refers to the head but in fact the therapy works on the whole body, mind and spirit during and after the session. Karen was introduced to Craniosacral Therapy many years ago. Having ridden horses for most of her life and experienced the usual, ups and downs of horse riding which usually entails at least one unplanned dismount, she had a back and neck problem and for her, Physiotherapy, Acupuncture, Osteopathy and Chiropractic had just not hit the button, but Craniosacral Therapy did straight away. She was so impressed with the treatment she wanted to learn more and decided to train and set up her own practice. Part of her work is to work very closely with other disciplines as she often finds while she can release tension held in the body, the patient then needs to learn to keep it that way so a course of Alexander Technique classes or a course with a Physiotherapy treatments is then required. So how do you explain Craniosacral Therapy? Well, it is non manipulation, it is extremely gentle, incredibly powerful and has amazing results.. But how do you tell a potential new client that? Karen does not. Instead she offers all new clients their first treatment free of charge so they can see how they are feeling during and after the treatment and if they feel they have benefitted they book their next session. As a client you lie on the couch fully clothed but with your shoes removed and Karen starts by placing her hands under your back, head or neck. Whilst lying there you don’t have time to snooze. Karen gently coaxes your body to respond. She will ask you questions such as do both your hips feel they are on the couch or is one higher? Is there any difference between the right side and the left side of the shoulders? Sometimes the answer may be no but more often than not the answer was yes. One
side was feeling heavier than the other. At times one side felt warmer than the other and when it came to my feet, my right foot went through an array of feelings first tingling, then numb, then very warm, then a kind of pins and needles sensation all in the space of what seemed like a few minutes. Karen would then say she was just waiting for my body to respond and sure enough usually it did by just feeling looser, lighter or less restricted. I now understand Karen’s difficulty in really explaining how the treatment works or how you will feel because we are all different and we all have different aches and pains, some relating to physical accidents or problems and others due to stress related problems but it is certainly a very gentle treatment and I for one certainly felt several changes and look forward to my next treatment to see if she can sort out a niggle or two I have. The treatment is so gentle it is suitable for all ages including babies, children as well as heavily pregnant women and the elderly. Article by Lynda Like.

The Thoughts of a Greengrocer At last we are at that time of year when things start to come into the market. It’s all foreign apart from the usual winter vegetables and some very nice flavoured tomatoes from Kent - most unusual at this time. This last week has seen the new potatoes either from Israel at under £2 kilo or the much dearer and nicer Jersey Royals. I’ve seen peas which were OK and some nice Portuguese broad beans. Cauliflowers have at last come down to a reasonable price but their close relative the Romanescue is very good quality at a very high price. Another Italian product is the large round Violetti aubergine which is much nicer to eat than the ordinary black ones (just my opinion, of course). The broad beans are quite small but being such fresh young pods I frequently just slice them and eat the beans in the pods after a quick steam. This way gives much better value for your money. A couple of months ago I started stocking fresh root turmeric which has become quite popular, I’ve now found some Krachai which is also of the ginger family. Usually only seen fresh in the far east it might be known as finger-root. English asparagus has been on the market but is terribly expensive and most limited in supply. I also read in the paper that some of the producers are selling English strawberries as the first of the season which is not really correct. These strawberries will have been grown fully indoors with heat - just the same as the Dutch ones with no real sunshine on them at all. The one thing that can be forced in this way most successfully is the rhubarb - most of what is on offer is Dutch, for some reason the Yorkshire rhubarb struggles to get down this part of the country. I have seen also some very thin and rather pale Kentish rhubarb which is a much lower price but is still nice to eat. Looking back a little the winter was very good for citrus fruits, particularly the Seville oranges which made really nice tasty marmalade. Easter time will soon be here! So I wish you all a very pleasant and happy holiday with hopefully some fine weather.

(Colan & James Badham) What do you call fifty penguins in the Arctic? Lost! REALLY lost! (Penguins live in Antarctica.) What sits on the bottom of the cold Arctic Ocean and shakes? A nervous wreck. How do you know if there’s a snowman in your bed? You wake up wet! A Sunday school teacher asked the children just before she dismissed them to go to church, “And why is it necessary to be quiet in church?” Annie replied, “Because people are sleeping”.

Wild in April
Protecting wildlife for the future hence each patch having similar colouring due to vegetative spread. But it does seem that in Dyrysiog enough cross-pollinated seed is produced to create the variation between patches. There are also small clumps of Marsh Marigold and good views and sounds of the Nant Bran (“Crow Stream”) to enjoy. Early Purple Orchids might be found towards the end of the month. There is little problem identifying these – they are early and purple!
Anemone nemorosa April is a good time for woodland walks and Brecknockshire has many to choose from. In Dyrysiog Wood (a Brecknock Wildlife Trust Reserve west of Brecon) you will find many flowers including carpets of Wood Anemones with the patches showing a wide variation in leaf and flower colour. This plant is reported to be rarely fertile –
Now is the time to plan which walks to join in the Talgarth Walking Festival, which starts on 1st May. Area’s best
drinks and recipes
Cwrw (Beer) Wales has always had a love affair with its beer, which has become engrained within our culture. As Dylan Thomas beautifully put it: “beer, its live, white lather, its brass-bright depths, the sudden world through the wet-brown walls of the glass, the tilted rush to the lips and the slow swallowing down to the lapping belly, the salt on the tongue, the foam at the corners” Beer, or more so, real ales, have seen a recent renaissance within Wales with an emergence of some excellent small, local breweries. One example is Jones the Brewer, based near Whitney; you can’t get any more local. Damian Jones the head brewer has created a range of craft ales each with a distinctive taste. Damian’s ‘Malthy python’ is a personal favourite which is full-bodied and a dark copper coloured malty ale. Well balanced and produced with German Magnum Hops it contains some toffee and caramel undertones. Alternatively
if you’re looking for an easy drinking pale ale, the aptly named ‘Abigail’s party’ (named after Damian’s wife and her fondness for Czech lager) is a light, citrusy ale that is refreshing with beautiful aromas. So where can you pick up Jones the Brewer Ales (among many other fantastic ales, might I add)? Personally I go to the farm shop at the Old Railway Line Garden Centre, a great showcase not just for local ales but many other varieties of ciders, wines and soft drinks. Greatest Loser is a Winner! A super slimmer is proving to be a winner at the losing game after shedding nearly 6st and being named Hay-on-Wye’s Slimming World ‘Greatest Loser’ 2015. Alyson Morris won the title and says her weight loss has changed her life: “I feel like a new woman since losing weight – in fact, people I haven’t seen for a while often can’t believe I’m the same person. For me though it’s the change on the inside that’s been the biggest – I’m happier, healthier and much more confident now.” The proud 42-year-old joined the Hay group, which is run by Helen Furnell, in March 2014 and has since dropped 5st 12lbs. She says: “Before I lost the weight I hid behind a big bubbly personality, always joking about being the ‘bigger’ person but I hated shopping for clothes and found playing with my children and doing simple everyday tasks would leave me tired and out of breath. The strain I was putting on my health was extremely worrying.” After hearing about it from a friend, Alyson decided to join her local Slimming World group at Hay Primary School. She says: “Walking through those doors was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done, I was embarrassed about my size and scared that I might be the biggest person there. I needn’t have worried though, everyone there was so friendly especially my Consultant Helen and I was so relieved when I found out that my weight was confidential between me and her – I’d had visions of having to tell everyone how much I weighed!
“I still enjoy all my favourite meals but I’ve learned how to make small changes like using lean meat or cooking with low calorie spray instead of oil or butter. It fits in really well with the rest of my family and we can all eat the same meals. And I’ve dropped from a dress size 24 to a 14/16!” Helen, who runs the Hay Slimming World group, says: “The changes we’ve seen in Alyson are incredible – as is she. I hope her success will inspire other people in Hay-on-Wye who’d like to lose weight by forming new lifestyle habits and become happier and healthier to take action. There’s a warm welcome waiting at Slimming World and, just think, if you start today you could feel like a completely new person just like Alyson.” The Hay group meets every Tuesday at 5pm and 7pm at Hay Primary School. To join call Helen on 07939 114452 or pop along. For further information please contact Helen Furnell on 07939 114452 or helen.furnell@gmail.com.
“Since then I’ve made so many friends at the group and I honestly don’t think I could have done it without their support each week. They helped me with recipes and tips and if I was ever struggling they were always there to remind me why I’d wanted to lose weight in the first place and how far I’d come since first stepping through the doors.” Alyson followed the club’s Food Optimising eating plan and swapped takeaways and convenience foods for homemade curries and roasts. She says: “I love food and it’s never once felt like I was on ‘a diet’ – in fact, people are always surprised at how much food I have on my plate and can’t believe I’m losing weight eating so much delicious food and without ever feeling hungry.

Dental Centre supports Dental Charity In 2014, Smilestar charity took a team of highly skilled dentists and dental nurses to Kenya. Dr Pickering from Hay on Wye Dental Centre was one of the dentists involved in this trip. Each of the team members had to fund their own trip and incredibly, they took all the dental equipment they needed from the UK which was either donated or money raised. Many of the rural areas in Kenya do not have a dental service and the only available treatment is provided by witch doctors. The nearest dentist at least a two-hour drive away or more than a full day’s walk. The local people have poor access to clean water and they use a twig from “the tooth brush tree” to clean their teeth. Smilestar charity was founded by Mitesh Badiani, his vision is to provide quality treatment to as many people as possible, particularly remote disadvantaged communities where basic dentistry is not available. Over the week the team saw about 300 dental patients, extracting over 500 teeth in total. They gave away toothbrushes and educated mothers on caring for their children’s teeth. They visited five different areas giving opportunity to all community members to attend for treatment. For more information go to www.smilestarcharity. co.uk or www.hay-on-wye-dentalcentre.co.uk

Some days are just like that.
The Hay Runner For the last three years Jo has been working at Gwernyfed Sports Centre. On April 1st the school became custodians of the centre and her time as a Duty Manager will come to an end. However, as they say, ‘When one door opens ….. “ The Hay Runner grew out of Jo’s passion for everything outdoors, but running in particular. As a hobby it has taken her to some far and magical places and on long events to some dark ones as well. Jo says that you can learn a lot about yourself over 18 hours! and adds that at its best there is an incredible sense of freedom and at its worst, the triumph of having got out there in the first place.
Obviously running isn’t for everyone, so Jo has added a new course to the Hay Runner. WALK to WALK FASTER. This is designed for anyone to have a go, at any age or ability. You may already be a walker but want to get stronger. You may be trying to lose weight and are not comfortable with the prospect of running, or quite simply would like to get outside with a group of like-minded people. Following on from this thee is a new Walk to Run course starting at Gwernyfed Sports Centre. There’s been such good feedback from these courses - it really works! Throwing something more into the mix, Jo has negotiated Monday nights at Gwernyfed with the school. on those nights they will be open as normal from 6pm - 9pm, for spinning, gym, badminton and Sports Hall Hire. Not forgetting an extra spinning session on Fridays at 6 pm. Jo is really looking forward to this adventure and hopes you will all join her on it! Jo Lord Personal Trainer, UK Athletics Leader in Running Fitness, Spinning® Instructor.

on Friday May 8th, 8pm. Enigmatic, mysterious and sub textural, Leonard Cohen is an unflinching character, with an exact sense of prose, a wry humour and courage to wrestle with the unspoken, yet forgiving human frailty. His recent spectacular world tour has been successful beyond belief but has not, with regret, exposed the solitary inner strength of his greatest songs in their original perfect form. Keith James, with a lifetime reputation of performing in this exact way brings you a concert of these amazing compositions in the most intimate and sensitive way imaginable. Amongst a concert of such songs as: Famous Blue Raincoat, Sisters of Mercy, Suzanne and Hallelujah, are also Poems by Federico Garcia Lorca that Keith has set to music; said to be Cohen’s greatest influence.

standards that Gwernyfed students have come to expect. It was decided that whilst it is essential to protect both students and staff from anxiety, it is necessary that we secure a change of plan, to see secondary education retained in the Gwernyfed catchment area.” Powys County Council has submitted an “outline business case” to Welsh Government to access the £50,000,000 required to build a new school. A consultation process is then planned for the summer of 2015 with the final decision being taken by the Cabinet of Powys County Council. A series of public meetings are being held to rally the local community, to make the community voice heard and to stop this cruel blow falling against one of the most successful schools in Powys. Please support your local school. Twitter - @GwernyfedHS #supportGwernyfedHS Website – Gwernyfed-hs.com
Gwernyfed – A Sacrificial Lamb?
“Performance at Key Stage 4 has improved over the last 3 years…At Key Stage 3 there has been an upward trend of improvement since 2010….Pupils have well developed social skills and they are well prepared for life and work outside school” Estyn
On Monday 16th March Powys County Council announced its proposal to close both Brecon and Gwernyfed High Schools and to open a new 11-16 school on the Brecon Learning Campus. It is proposed that a new 11-16 school will open on the 2 existing sites from 1.9.2017, until the move into a new build, possibly in September 2018. No sixth form options would be offered at either school after the September 2015 intake. Students would be offered post 16 education at the Brecon campus of Neath Port Talbot College. Headteacher, John Williams, commented: “Everyone at Gwernyfed High School is in a state of shock. This is a purely financial decision. We are raising standards as shown by our ‘yellow’ categorisation by the Welsh Government. Our learners are succeeding, we have a fantastic group of dedicated staff and maintain a balanced budget working in an inspiring and stunning location. ‘’This has major implications for the wider rural community in South Powys. They will need to consider the impact this proposal will have for Primary Schools and for everyone who lives in this area now and in the long term.” Chair of Governors, Revd Ian Charlesworth, said: “The Governors met on Wednesday 18th March to discuss the latest proposal from PCC. Following a robust debate of some of the issues, it was determined that the Governing Body was not convinced of either the transformational nature of the plan or its ability to deliver the ongoing improvement of
“I am extremely upset to have heard the proposals for the future of secondary school education in Brecon & Radnorshire today. Under the proposals we are losing a very important school in my area and as a Governor I am aware of the upset this will cause. Powys is bowing to the pressure of Cardiff Bay’s ‘One size fits all’ approach to education. What may work in Cardiff or Newport will not work here,’’ stated County Councillor Chris Davies. Roger Williams MP, former Chair of Governors and parent at Gwernyfed, voiced his opposition: “This decision comes from a Montgomeryshire dominated Council hell-bent on closing our schools here in Brecon and Radnorshire. Once again the constituents I represent are being let down. I pledge to fight these proposals all the way. I also urge Gwernyfed parents- past, present and future- to make their opinions known to Powys County Council. These ill thought out plans can’t go ahead and we must stop them.” County Councillor William Powell, AM for Mid and West Wales and a former Head Boy at Gwernyfed, summed it up: “I am not prepared for my old school, which is now more successful than it has ever been, to be a “sacrificial lamb” whilst the County Council attempts to resolve ongoing issues at Brecon High School. These proposals are detrimental to our community in educational, economic and social terms. We must unite to resist them - and to bring forward a better plan.’’

Just before we go to print, we read with fury the press release on ‘Radical Overhaul for Secondary Education’. In just 24 hours, here are people’s reactions sent in to the Wye Local team ... “I have lived in Hay-on-Wye for the last 33 years and have a family connection to the area that dates back two centuries. Many of my family members went to Gwernyfed and some in Builth Wells. Although Powys CC might see small schools as a luxury in our area, I strongly believe they are one of the main reasons our younger generations have flourished academically in recent years. Closing down Gwernyfed or Builth Wells schools may seem like a short term fix to a wider problem relating to council budgets, but in reality it is not. Budgets are being cut all over the public sector and although some cuts are needed, attacking the younger generations, some of whom have already been moved about during the first round of primary school closures is extremely damaging. The young are so vulnerable at their age that this kind of activity will destroy their confidence. Further to the damage this will do to the children themselves, the knock on effect of soaring travel costs and loss of business to the economy local to the closed schools will be detrimental. What happens to ‘little Johnny’ who does not live near a bus, who can’t get to Brecon because his parents can’t afford to drive him or don’t have car? The cost of the extra travel, new bus services, contracted in from the private sector will be astronomical. Bus companies will have Powys over a barrel, this will not be a cheap fix. Due to the extra cost of living that this ludicrous activity will bring, people will not be able to afford to live here any more. Further more, what will happen to the beloved Gwernyfed? Will it be sold off as a property development, as unaffordable housing for local people? Will more people move into the area? NO, because there will be no school to service their needs. Creating super schools is just about the worst idea I have ever heard. I know, lets create a massive expensive version of an out dated format for learning. Save our small schools and preserve learning for future generations.” Aubrey Fry “As a mother of two children, I would never send my children so far to school with the current proposals. I would look to alternatives including home education, as I could not afford the time or money to take my children to either Lady Hawkins or Fairfield, both of which are considerably closer than Brecon. I would rather live on a reduced income than allow my children to have such lengthy days and still have homework to complete when they get home. It would equate to longer hours studying and out of the home than most full time adult workers. Not good for children, building community, family life, mental health etc.” Anon “The announcement to date is limited in scope and detail but on the face of it, what has been announced has been done with no engagement or discussion and leaves a lot to be desired in many aspects, and clearly open to challenge in others. It appears clearly to be a cost cutting exercise rather than for real education and opportunity reasons and should be badged as such rather than hiding behind the idea that it is for educational improvement and standards.
Gwernyfed is a small but successful school providing a safe and stable environment from eleven to eighteen with a strong history of success in numerous fields, not least academic. And we should remember that a school should not just be considered on academic attainment. A school should be an environment where young people can become well rounded adults as part of their locality and community. The school also provides a base for community facilities that may be even less viable with this decision, an issue which is not even addressed in the initial statement. The future for the young people of this area is one issue, and the long term future of the facilities and site is another. The Mid Wales Hospital in Talgarth is a local example of what happens when the sector gets asset disposal terribly wrong. Less haste and more thought is needed, and in partnership, not as a done deal from County Hall.’’ Ceri Davies “I am a parent of a pupil at Gwernyfed High School and have just received the letter home from the school yesterday! In the words of my 11 year old: ‘If they have £50,000,000 to spend why can’t they invest in the schools already there’ I think she has a point.’’ Michelle Clark “Where is the sense in closing a school which is recognised as being one of the top three in Powys, is financially sound and achieving better GCSE/A Levels than ever before? There isn’t any. Everybody in the Gwernyfed catchment area needs to fight against this absurd proposal.” Felicity Jones “Gwernyfed is the heart of our community providing sports facilities, employment and an excellent education. The crisis in GP recruitment affects rural areas the most. While ‘great local Primary Schools’ may attract young GPs with families, Secondary Schools 20 miles away will not.” Julie Grigg “Gwernyfed is one of the few schools with their budget in the black. Also, if the pupils already are having problems with school transport, ie. have to pay for it, despite living within the catchment area, how will this affect the proposed Super School? I doubt the time frame of a new school 2018 will cut it. Meanwhile, our children’s education will go down the pan.” Pip Turner Our Children have already suffered the closure of their primary schools now they face the closure of their secondary school. The Council is playing with the education, welfare and well-being of those it is supposed to be looking after. This proposal should never even be considered.” Sarah Anne Scaife “Don’t for one second be fooled into thinking that this is part of some radical PCC master plan to improve education standards in Powys. It’s just another cost cutting measure that will now affect the next generation. I went to Sixth Form at Gwernyfed and fully intend for my daughter to go to school there in years to come. Our community has lost so much of its identity to the Council’s cost cutting measures already. If we don’t act on this ill thought out plan
Please mention Wye Local when responding to adverts - 35 -
now then we are failing the next generation of children who could be taught at Gwernyfed. In recent years, it has been a high academic achiever versus rival schools. You would think that PCC would be proud of its success and use it as a model for other schools to follow, rather than deeming it surplus to requirements and only fit for closure.” Andrew Harris “I am disgusted that Powys County Council feel that they can close a rural thriving school that has high standards and has recently been put in Band yellow. Gwernyfed has worked exceptionally hard and has excellent exam results. Ask yourself why do a substantial amount of parents from the Brecon area send their children to Gwernyfed? The reason for this is because the pupils feel safe! Listen to the young learners, it’s their future!” Sarah Davies “Gwernyfed School is in my opinion a school of excellence. If anything this school should get more funding and restoration to its former glory. With current technology and a much greater understanding of the world and environment around us, Gwernyfed School could be a leader of excellence.” Martin James “As a parent I have a very direct interest in the future of Gwernyfed High School. I myself attended the school, as did my mother. The current push towards centralising important facilities only serves to isolate the smaller communities and to drive the young people away.” Annabelle Lloyd-Penny

Glasbury Arts As spring arrives we are delighted to announce that the Arts Council Wales have awarded us a grant for the fifth year running to part fund our annual Harp Summer School from Wednesday 26th – Saturday 29th August 2015 at Gwernyfed High School and Theatr Brycheioniog. If you play the harp or know someone of any age who does, take a look at the details and arrangements for booking a place on our website: www.glasburyarts.co.uk The brochure for the rest of our programme will be available at the end of May but will be available on our website from early April including an outdoor “Harp in the Park” recital on the afternoon of Sunday 28th June in the grounds of Gwernyfed High School (indoors if weather unsuitable). Glasbury Arts, which is a registered charity, has grown from a single exhibition 12 years ago to providing a substantial programme of visual and performing arts including a wide range of workshops. The trustees have now started to implement a three year development plan which, if we succeed, will see an expansion of our activities. With this in mind we wish to strengthen our trustee board and would be pleased to hear from people who would feel able to work within and be committed to our existing ethos and be willing to participate fully in our activities. Whilst we do not want to be too rigid, we are keen to recruit people with a performing arts experience, or in accountancy or charity law and from backgrounds that would enable us to broaden the diversity of the existing Board. If this opportunity might be of interest to you, a full information pack can be downloaded from our website: glasburyarts.co.uk. Alternatively if you would like an informal discussion please contact our enquiry line 07583 544110 before the end of May.

Glasbury Get Together Club I’m sure we are all enjoying the arrival of Spring. To help us along with our gardening for the coming season we have an experienced gardener to be our speaker for our next meeting. We welcome Gareth Davis to our meeting on Wednesday 22nd of April, 2.30 - 4.30pm. We will have our raffle and tea and biscuits later. Before the Beetle drive started on the afternoon of the 25th February, club members Beryl and Stan Timewell entertained us with a couple of songs which they mimed to karaoke style, with props, which was very amusing. Although not many members attended the February club meeting, the Beetle Drive proceeded with the usual chaos and fun. First and second prizes were won for highest scores. First prize went to Maureen Newell and second prize to Sally, a visitor and possible future member. Booking now for our first trip of the season to Castel Coch and Cardiff Castle on Tuesday April 14th.
Gwernyfed High School held their Annual Eisteddfod on Friday 13th February 2015. The Eisteddfod is a Welsh Festival of Literature, Music and Performance. The pupils all belong to one of the School Houses, Mynydd and Dyffryn, and they competed against each other throughout the day. Additionally there were competitions in many other departments such as Art and Science. With a jam packed programme our judges, Paul Sweeting, Revd Ian Charlesworth and Revd David Thomas were certainly not disappointed. The morning programme saw Years 7 – 9 compete with musicians, recitations in English and Welsh; small sketches and plenty of singing. In the afternoon there was a ‘Sospan Fach’ sing off before the much anticipated Chairing Ceremony took place. Our congratulations go to Cameron Lewis, Year 9 who won the Junior Chair, and to Felicity Jones,Year 13 who won the Senior Chair. The

Best Contribution Shield was won by Megan Morris. The overall winning house was Mynydd. This was a splendid way to end the half term with the school altogether cheering, laughing and celebrating success. Hay Castle Over fifty artists have come together to create a one-of-a-kind exhibition which will be open from Saturday 4th to Saturday 11th April at Hay Castle, 10am – 4pm. The exhibition is an exceptional mix of regional artists on both sides of the border, as well as some from even further afield who love Hay and support the vision of Hay Castle Trust. All funds raised from the sale of the artworks will help rescue and conserve this nationally significant piece of heritage. The ingenious Quentin Blake has included a typically quirky illustration (shown here). Also up for auction are original works by Harry Potter illustrator Cliff
Wright, Heap House illustrator Edward Carey, and cartoonists Rosie Brooks and Tony Husband; etchings by Norman Ackroyd and Frances St Clair Miller; and delightful watercolours by Sophie Windham and Robert Macdonald. Other works include oil paintings of the Castle by Gaynor Funnell; vibrant pastels of the Black Mountains by Shan Egerton; striking linocuts by Ann Lewis, Carry Akroyd, and Hannah Firman; photorealistic Welsh landscapes by Daniel Crawshaw; a colourful still life by Jean Miller; sculptures, works of glass, lights and photography; and a timeless portrait of the King of Hay, Richard Booth, by Eugene Fisk. We’re grateful to all the artists who are taking part in the Auction, and to the Hay-on-Wye art community and many wonderful people who have worked hard to bring this event together. All are welcome to browse, enjoy and even place ‘silent bids’, at the castle or online at www.haycastleart.org Hay Cheese Market The restored Hay Cheese Market reopened to the public one year ago! process. The photos include some beautiful wall paintings created between 1890 to 1909 when the Hay Lodge of Freemasons were tenants, which were discovered by Jenkinsons’ builders during restoration work, along with later pictures made during the tenancy of Hay Camera Club. A fun new activity for children and families will also be launched: The Eliza Trail tells the story of a Victorian girl exploring the town and the Bailey River Path to discover lots of interesting things about the history of Hay. The route is way marked by Moss, her little white dog and accompanied by a colourful leaflet and map. Come to the Cheese Market over Easter weekend to collect a route map. Returning trailblazers will receive a bag of mini Easter eggs! www.haycheesemarket.org. Hay Dial-a-Ride Now that the colder days are behind us, Hay Diala-Ride is looking ahead to its Spring Trips. Days out are the highlights of our year and 2015 will see members visiting new places such as Stockton Bury Gardens and Hampton Court. Our next trips are to Berrington Hall at the end of
April and then to Hergest Croft Gardens in May. These trips are open only to our members and places go quickly, so give us a call if you’d like to go. Our loyal team of drivers and passenger assistants are very important to us and we’re delighted to welcome some new volunteers to our team! Chris Bruce, Goronwy Davies, Caroline Hafner and Mary Rutherford are new to Dial A Ride and Charlotte Sellar is making the jump from Community Cars to the small bus. In January we celebrated Brian Bentley’s 20 years of service and he’s pictured here with Jeffery Babb, Chairman receiving his long service award. Sadly we said goodbye to Mary Morgan who was a very popular driver with all our members. A lot of work goes on behind the scenes and we’ve been working hard on training in the early part of the year. Drivers are currently undergoing training and Dial-aRide also has 7 newly

qualified First Aiders. We work hard to make sure our members are in safe hands. Don’t forget that we don’t just offer hospital trips, we also provide transport for the all-important social needs like going to friends or to a social club or just out for lunch. If you live in a 9 mile radius of Hay, and have a transport need, you’re eligible to join. Our 20th Anniversary raffle raised £695 and as always the Fundraising Team are hard at work behind the scenes to plan this year’s events. Having set up the Friends of Dial-a-Ride group last Autumn, there are even more hands on deck to help us out! If you are interested in helping run an event or bake us a cake, do get in touch. Our next cake stall will be on Saturday 23rd May in the Co op. Contact us on 01497 821616 with any enquiries. Transition Hay We have started work at the organic garden again on Wednesday mornings in the geodome and, by the time you read this, probably Saturday mornings too. Our new project last year was to build the pond; and we put in raised beds and a stone
pathway to provide access and enable people in wheelchairs to also enjoy this beautiful spot. The broad beans are beginning to grow outside, as is the garlic. The shallots are in and there will be an onion planting day soon. Permaculture Introductory weekend 16th-17th May. Practical Permaculture Volunteer week 16th-20th June and July (date tbc) Forest Gardening weekend 4th-5th July for details see himalayanpermaculture.com We are very happy to welcome anyone who would like to come and look around, or even to work for an hour or two. There are also two or three personal plots to lease so if you are interested send us an e-mail at hayfieldgarden@gmail.com or just drop in and see us. Happy gardening! U3A HAY Our next U3A meeting will be at 10.30am on Tuesday 21st April at The Swan at Hay, Church Street. The afternoon session will begin at 1.30pm. Our Annual General Meeting will be at 12.00noon. At the morning session Bill Jones, professor of Modern Welsh History, Cardiff University will be giving an illustrated talk celebrating the 150th
