Hello

I can proudly announce the safe arrival of Otis Freddie Badham, born on Friday 24th April weighing 8lb 4.5oz. It’s been a bit of a shock going back to the sleepless nights but Otis is worth every minute of deprived sleep. Big sister Cariad and big brother James adore him, they had both been hoping for a boy … although I think they thought he’d be playing footie with them by now. Thank you to everyone for their wishes, cards and gifts. Some great new advertisers have come on board the Wye Local this month. New Inn,Talgarth on page 2. Powys Planning & Design, also on page 2. News from Talgarth by Cllr. William Powell Powys County Councillor for Talgarth As I sign off this month’s column, we are still basking in the success of the Third Talgarth Walking Festival earlier in the month. The Walkers are Welcome Committee and everyone else involved in the initiative can be justly proud of their achievements. As well as signalling the start of the summer of 2015, the Walking Festival has also become a significant annual fixture, contributing to our town’s regeneration. Back in 2004, The Sunday Telegraph described Talgarth and its hinterland as “the undiscovered jewel of Britain.” Well, more than a decade on, the success of this event, and of so many others instigated by local groups has brought us closer to our beautiful environment, both built and natural, being appreciated and harnessed for the benefit of the wider community. The Pizzoferrato Talgarth Twinning events on the same Bank Holiday weekend were exceptionally well supported - and I enjoyed the opportunity to be fully involved in hosting our Italian guests. Once again, all credit to Jane Green and her team for their hard work. It is natural to reflect briefly on the outcome of the recent General Election. I am grateful to the many local people who have commiserated with me on the fact that Roger Williams’ distinguished parliamentary career was brought to an end on the 7th May. In particular, his expertise in agriculture, rural affairs and environment and applied sciences will be sorely missed in a House of Commons all too light on members with frontline agricultural and scientific experience. Nevertheless, it is a source of solace that reliable reports from the Election Count at the Pavilion in Llandrindod Wells indicate a strong Liberal Democrat victory in Talgarth and the adjacent communities. It is comforting to know that, even in the face of a clinically efficient and lavishly resourced Conservative campaign, those who knew Roger best and valued him most remained loyal. County Councillor Chris Davies is

to be warmly congratulated on his election - and clearly all people of good will should wish him well for his term of office. It is also the season of handover in local politics and this last week has seen the AGMs of both Powys County Council and Talgarth Town Council. Sincere congratulations go to my fellow County Councillor, Paul Ashton of Brecon who is Chair of Powys County Council for 2015/16 with County Councillor Keith Tampin of Llandrindod as his Vice Chair. Here in Talgarth, Councillor Andy Lord remains as Mayor and Chair of Town Council with Councillor Jacqui Wilding serving as his Deputy. This evening, I am attending the AGM of one of Talgarth’s longest standing voluntary groups, Talgarth TiRC, which also has a good story to tell again this year. I know that many local residents share my concern at the recent hiatus in terms of funding for the next phase of the Talgarth Flood Alleviation Scheme. Efforts are continuing, both within Powys County Council and at Ministerial level, to restore the funding shortfall, should the single legal objection be dealt with. I shall keep you apprised of developments in this important local issue. In the meantime, please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any feedback or issues of concern on: 07703 112113 or by email: william.powell@ assembly.wales Alternatively, you can come along to my next advice surgery on Friday, 5th June from 5:00pm at Talgarth Tourist Information & Resource Centre. Appointments are not essential but advanced notice may be useful if the issues are complex. In any event, I look forward to seeing you soon. Best Wishes William

News from Chris Davies Your local MP

the future of so much in our community.

It’s always a pleasure to write for Wye Local. It’s a particular thrill on this occasion as it is my first opportunity to record how delighted I am to have been elected to represent our area at Westminster. Liz and I are so grateful that electors have placed their trust in me – you will have an energetic and noisy champion. Thank you.

Contact me on any matter: 07855 752110 or email: cllr.chris.davies@powys.gov.uk

I have tried to emphasise the positive in my campaign for election. We have so much to be positive about and if we all put our shoulder to the Gwernyfed wheel (and to any number of other wheels as time moves on) we can achieve so much.

Best wishes, Chris

Much more important than the General Election to local people is the battle that we face to keep our High School. Gwernyfed is a top class school with great staff, producing both excellent academic results and rounded youngsters who act as wonderful ambassadors for the area. Gwernyfed School ticks every educational box but also forms one of the cornerstones of our community. One does not have to look far to find that local rugby and football relies upon the ‘feedstock’ that Gwernyfed produces, that our Young Farmers’ Clubs are made up of Gwernyfed pupils and that so much more revolves around the fact that we have our own, very special, High School. I am determined that our two daughters will go to Gwernyfed when they leave Hay Primary School; I certainly do not want anyone’s children or grandchildren spending hours on buses and building up a loyalty to Brecon or schools in Herefordshire when that loyalty should be underpinning the future of our community. Chair of Governors Ian Charlesworth is not one to be daunted by a challenge. Ian is supported by a strong group of Governors and a great Head Teacher in John Williams. They will leave no stone unturned in this battle. As a Governor myself I have made clear my unequivocal opposition to the notion of losing our school; I do not apologise for promising to use every ounce of influence that being your Member of Parliament offers to remove this giant shadow over

THE ROSE Since before Roman times gardeners have revered the rose as the queen of flowering plants for the extraordinary beauty and scent of its blooms. The rose family offers an enormous range of colour, shape and perfume from the simple purity of the wild dog rose, the soft, pastel charm of the old garden rose or the jewel-like brilliance of the modern hybrids. Whether grown alone in the splendour of a formal garden or enhancing the quality of a mixed planting it is hard to imagine a garden without roses heightening the glory of a summer’s day. There literally is a rose for every part of the garden ranging from the low growing ground cover and patio roses, through the larger bush and shrub roses to the climbers and ramblers for growing up walls, arches, pergolas and even through trees. They all generally prefer an open, sunny site and a fertile soil. When planting, and each year as a surface mulch, it is important to add organic matter such as compost or well-rotted manure. For your roses to perform at their best, it is also vital to feed them, preferably twice a year in April and June, with a special rose fertilizer. This done they will reward you with beautiful flowers from June to well into the autumn year after year. ‘Rose Day’ on Saturday 20th June (details can be found on our advert). Never too late? Many years ago I did some Personal Training (PT) with a lady, now 84 – who is utterly adorable! She called again recently. Although in the winter of her life, she’s in fine fettle, and slight, so I’m thinking ‘don’t push nutrition too hard. But she’s a little frail, so I’m certainly going to try to help her keep mobile but no more than this. Her main remit was to restore range of movement / strength to her left hand and arm following a stroke but I have no idea yet if this is even feasible from a neurological point of view. As I drive to her Hereford home I have all the time in the world to think ‘what’s left to give her’? I nearly always give at least an hour and a half for a client’s first session and if I’m honest I’m slightly panicking, wondering how on earth I’m going to fill it and make it worth her while. However, I do know this much: always expect the unexpected. I take in the paperwork and we start to rake through it. This sounds a bit ‘dry’ but I’ve systemised it to cover all bases, and the simplest question can unearth the most interesting answers. Jenny and I found we had a lot to uncover. Her nutrition needed a sympathetic

overhaul (it’s not the same cooking hot food say, when you’re on your own, and safety is paramount). She really surprised me as I was going to take the ‘soft’ option (is it important to curtail your puds at 84?) well according to Jenny she’d anticipated my being strict and was eager to hear what I had to say! She expected me to measure and weigh her, but this was irrelevant for me. Instead, we discussed her quality of life, how to build some routine back into her day - a stroke knocks you for six in a wider sense than just the physical, (and yes, mobility and some great ideas for her left side). In addition how to help her sleep better. That caught me out. Never assume age brings an easy sleep pattern with it. Two and quarter hours later I left her house with hugs and a deep sense of satisfaction. No stone had been unturned and I felt her quality of life could now improve, especially as she was so receptive to the suggestions made. There are so many components to holistic health – just a fraction here. What might you uncover? (names changed and permission sought to print). my band “Los Squideros” at Glastonbury, whipping off my poncho to reveal …. James Bond in a tux and performing walk about magic while the band played The Bond theme tune. Have you any future plans for your work? Creating a new and bigger show where my magic tricks are incorporated into a story line. I am also developing my adult work, including a new skill called mentalism (mind reading). What advice would you give a local artist? If they are a magician, I would say “move off my patch or I’ll break your wand!” Any other artist I’d say “advertise in Wye Local magazine”. What other local artists do you admire? Janine Sharp, she’s an ace theatre director, playwright and runs Hay Theatre Company plus she’s right here helping me write this…… ouch! Artist statement: Practice, practice, practice, but it’s not as much fun as winging it.

How long have you been an artist? I have been a magician for 11 years. Where did you train or gain experience? Hogwarts! They offer an excellent degree in performance art in partnership with Nottingham University of course. My actual degree specialised in film making and comedy performance. Later that year Lord and Lady Bamford hired me for their Christmas Children’s Extravaganza, performing for David Cameron and his family. However I have to say Lollibop Children’s Festival at Hatfield House last year was fantastic. I performed all day every day for 3 days in front of 10,000 children. It is known as the Glastonbury of children’s festivals. What would you class as ‘your masterpiece’? Playing Apache on the guitar dressed as a Mexican in

Get to really know Helen Furnell Place of birth? Oxford. Where do you live now? Hay-on-Wye. Marital status? I live with my partner of 18 years, Kelvyn, a Hay boy born and bred, who has recently retired as a musician in the Army after 35 years and who is now getting on my nerves. Occupation? I’m manager at Richard Booth’s Bookshop and run two Slimming World groups, one in Hay and the other in Kington. Children? Kelvyn has two great children, both grown up, Annabel and Edward. Pets? Niles, the cat. A real character and extremely friendly - ask the neighbours. What was your favourite childhood television programme? Well, that depends really on how old I was: it’s between the Clangers, the Muppet Show and Starsky and Hutch. Are you a collector of anything? I don’t collect anything at present, except loads of paperwork! Seriously, I love art deco but have promised myself I won’t buy anything that’s not useful, so I’m still looking. What is usually your first thought when you wake up? What am I going to wear to work today. What do you usually think about right before falling asleep? I try not to think too much for fear of remembering something I should have done that day! Most exciting thing you’ve won? Recently the Londis Christmas Raffle in 2013 (I think the only raffle prize I’ve ever won). Other than that it was probably coming first in one of the competitions at the International Music Eisteddfod in Llangollen when I was a teenager. Two lessons life has taught you? The first is a cliché, that life is not a dress rehearsal and the second is to behave with integrity. What makes you grumpy? If I’m grumpy it’s because I’ve decided that’s how I want to be at that time. Teenage crush? David Essex and a friend of my brother. Have any bad habits? Oh yes. Which bad habits drive you crazy? My habit of putting things down to tidy away later - which doesn’t then happen and which I know doesn’t drive just me crazy. What book would you recommend to others? The Regeneration trilogy by Pat Barker - an outstanding read and a total eye-opener on the First World War for me when I first read it years ago. Best present ever received? My Dualit toaster with

sandwich toaster, which is still going strong after about 15 years. List one thing you wish you could change about yourself: Just under two years ago I decided I needed to change just in order to stay alive and having lost nearly 7 stones since then, there isn’t anything else I’d change. If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would you go? Canada and Norway are top of my list of places I haven’t been. I also love Italy. List five goals on your life’s to-do list: Well there are three I can think of: As before regarding travel; walk to the top of Snowdon, rather than take the train; visit the cemetery in Germany where my Great Uncle was buried when he died as a British POW 2 days before the end of the First World War. Name one regret you have: I don’t see the point in regrets if you can’t do anything about them. Name one thing you miss about being a kid: Living with my brother, four sisters and my Mum and Dad (my Dad died when I was 15). Name one thing you love about being an adult: That’s a good one. I love how the older I get, the less I worry about other people’s business. What’s your favourite song of all time? I love music and have my own list of Desert Island songs which include “I’ve Got You Under My Skin” by Frank Sinatra and “Mr Blue Sky” by ELO. However my favourite piece of music to listen to is Mahler’s Symphony No. 2, “The Resurrection”. It is sublime and usually makes me cry. What’s your favourite thing to do on a Saturday night? Spend it with friends in either my house or theirs. What’s your favourite thing to do on a Sunday afternoon? Since taking on the Slimming World groups my favourite thing is to have the time to provide member support and get ready for the next week’s sessions. Have any hidden talents? I’m pretty much an open book. Most people know I sing and I do play the cello from time to time. When I lived in London and played regularly THE best day of my life so far was spent playing in an orchestra under the baton of Sir Simon Rattle - I know! Sum yourself up in five words: Optimistic, Enthusiastic, Adventurous, Moody and a bit bossy.

REVIEW

The Old Barn At Three Cocks Robert and I visited The Old Barn at Three Cocks on a Friday evening in May. We hadn’t eaten here for some years and were looking forward to trying the food now that the place is under new management. Head Chef Jenny, and Shane who is front of house, have been here since January. The bar and restaurant areas, the old main oakbeamed one and the newish conservatory, were both busy and the atmosphere was convivial. Many locals out enjoying an evening with friends and family. We were looked after all evening by the very friendly and attentive head-waitress Katie, who has been at The Old Barn now for 20 months. She gave us the choice of where to sit so we chose a table for two, with very comfortable rattan chairs, in the middle of the light, airy and modern conservatory. A sprig of Pussy Willow in a white vase on the table was a nice touch I thought. Katie brought over a glass of Sauvignon Blanc for me and pint of Kronenburg Lager for Robert. We could choose our starters and main courses from the well thought out printed menu or from the specials on the chalk board on the wall. My starter, from the chalk board was Fresh Crab, Avocado & Samphire Salad @ £5.95. Superb flavours and a dressing to die for. Robert’s Potted brown Shrimps with toasted wholegrain bread, also @ £5.95 and from the printed menu, were also really good. For Robert’s main course he chose the Pan-fried half a Guinea Fowl breast and leg, topped with crispy bacon and served with Dauphinoise potatoes and creamed leeks. He said it was perfectly cooked and I could see him devouring every mouthful with glee. I chose the Chargrilled 8oz Sirloin Steak with slow-roasted tomatoes on the vine, fabulous chunky chips and a massive portobello mushroom. Buttered greens on the side. God it was good. Every single morsel. The medium-rare steak was (say these next three words slowly) cooked - to - perfection. How often does that happen? The mushroom tasted divine and I didn’t need to add

seasoning at all. A fabulous plateful of food. Sadly I couldn’t eat it all, but the dog benefitted a bit later on! The Guinea Fowl was £13.95 and the Steak was £15.95. We ordered a very nice bottle of Rioja to accompany our main courses. Katie brought over the pudding menu but we gratefully declined. Two very ‘full to the gunnels’ and very satisfied customers. Puddings, all £4.50 consisted of Sticky Toffee Pudding, Chocolate Fudge Cake, Lemon Meringue Pie, Lemon Tart, Chocolate Brownie and a selection of Ice Creams. Cheese board £5.50. We had a little chat with Jenny and Shane later on. They had met in South Africa. Jenny is South African and comes from Durban. Shane is English, from Broadstairs in Kent but with a South African accent. I like the accent. I like the country! Jenny has two chefs to help her out in the kitchen, Alex Vaughan and Nathan Corrick. We are delighted to learn that the food here is good again. Shane and Jenny are keen to put their own stamp on it and provide good quality meals and great service to all customers, old and new. By what we experienced that evening it seems that The Old Barn at Three Cocks will be a roaring success. The Old Barn is open for food and drink every single day of the week. To see the menu and book a table please visit www.oldbarnthreecocks.co.uk Shane and Jenny, a huge thank you from both of us for such a lovely evening with fabulous food. Clare and Robert Williams

A Life Is What You Get

Rhosgoch Golf And

I set out to interview Lynn expecting to meet a frail, decrepit old lady, clinging precariously to life. How wrong could I be. I was warmly greeted by a smiling, lively, alert lady who obviously had not suffered the ravishes of her ninety one years.

Leisure Club

Rhosgoch (nr Hay-on-Wye), Builth Wells, Powys, LD2 3JY

We chatted about all manner of things of mutual interest before I got round to the purpose of my visit, which was to interview her about her recently published, book which I had read and found completely riveting. It covers her childhood in a Children’s Home in the Midlands; her struggle to rise above her circumstances, her life in the WAAF during the war and her efforts to carve out a life for herself after leaving the services in 1946 right up to the present time. I asked her what motivated her to write her story and she told me that after retiring as chairman of the Hay Writers, she found she had more time to devote to her own writing and, encouraged by friends familiar with her writing and spurred by a quotation by George Eliot: ‘It is never too late to be what you think you could have been’ she decided it wasn’t too late, even at her great age, to become an author. Her Book – ‘A LIFE IS WHAT YOU GET’ is now on sale at Mary Fellows Bookshop, Broad Street, Hay-on-Wye. Price £6.99 is also on Amazon. Clare Williams

The Thoughts of a Greengrocer The month of May is always a little nerve wracking as it is the lead into the Hay Festival when everybody wants local produce - particularly strawberries. This year is a little earlier so the weather is crucial to us as strawberries don’t naturally ripen until the middle of June (in the past it was touch and go whether they would be ready in time for my father’s birthday on 14th June.) by the time you read this we will know when the strawberries started this year.

As far as imported fruit goes I have tried the new season peaches and nectarines from Spain, and as usual I was disappointed, particularly the nectarines which were distinctly sour. By the middle of June they will be better and cheaper. We should be really well off for fruit this year as the Indian mangoes will be back. By the end of this month we will be looking forwards to the summer holidays - let’s hope that the weather is kind to us. Article supplied by Stuart Pritchard

Asparagus is the other seasonal treat. At one time it was only available to the rich and powerful. the cottage gardener could not afford the space to be set aside for a short season crop with a number of years needed to get it well established. The supermarkets came along and in their bid to have everything on sale all year they started the mass import from, initially Peru, but then other sources ( late in the season some very good stuff comes from Poland). this has served to depress the price and has made asparagus much more widely available. Now we have some English producers growing it over heated pipes to get early and late crops. In spite of all this the nicest shoots come during the natural season which will end, according to tradition, on 20th June. This is so the leafy growth can be allowed to come and it is this that gives the plant reserves and strength to produce next year’s crop. Into June and we look forward to firstly broad beans then French (or Bobby) beans and later in the year the scarlet runners, which are also imported these days but usually from hotter climes and so they are not as good. However if you cannot wait the inferior product can be found. Local new potatoes start in June and there will be peas, various brassicas and salads. Raspberries, currants and cultivated blackberries will also start. If you intend to make jams and conserves using the summer fruits don’t wait too long expecting a price drop. They are never cheap and don’t last long.

Wild in June

Protecting wildlife for the future occur but are the mainstays of our summer display. Hemlock does occur in wetter corners and the true Carrot can also be found occasionally as can wild Parsnip with similar but yellow flowers. Sweet Cicely is found in the eastern Black Mountains valleys.

Chaerophyllum Temulum There has been a good display of our native wildflowers on road verges for some time now. June is the time for Rough Chervil (pictured) to take over representing the Carrot Family from Cow Parsley which has been decorating the roadsides since early May. Later Upright Hedge-parsley will take on the role into the autumn. These are not the only members of the family to

Of course gardeners are not familiar with these flowers as they harvest the root crops long before a flowering stem is sent up in the following year to take advantage of the food stored in the roots. On the 13th June there is a meeting at one of the Brecknock Wildlife Trust’s most botanically rich reserves, Vicarage Meadows. Come along for a display of orchids and the rare and attractive Wood Bitter Vetch. Details are on the website at bit.ly/ bwtevents. John Crellin

Bowen Technique Alison Matthews invited me to come over to her house in Cusop for a couple of sessions of Bowen Technique treatment to give our readers an insight of what exactly Bowen Treatment is. This was my first ever treatment although an old friend of mine said that Bowen had benefitted him enormously. The first treatment was on 23rd April and the second was exactly a week later. To start with Alison and I chatted so that she could get an idea of any problems or injuries that I have or have had. This took a while. Anyone who has spent a lot of their life with horses usually has a list of injuries as long as their arm and I am no exception. Most patients come to Bowen with a musculoskeletal problem: typically backache, frozen shoulder or sports injuries. Other problems can consist of sciatica, tennis elbow, bronchial complaints and whiplash - to name but a few. During the treatment Alison lightly ‘rolled’ her hands over my muscles and the surrounding connective tissues at specific points, many in the back and neck. That’s where I feel pain most of the time. I work at a computer a lot. My back has been particularly bad lately, having suffered spasms at the beginning of April. The pressure Alison applies is no more than you could apply to the eyeball. After four to six moves Alison left the room for a few minutes and I just closed my eyes and relaxed. Then Alison returned for the next moves. Those breaks are fundamental: you are starting a dialogue between the brain and the body’s systems so the body can heal itself. Bowen therapists work on the fascia, the connective tissue that wraps around muscles, which they believe can become twisted and cause pain – often somewhere else as the body compensates for the original injury. Alison’s frequent exits from the room did make me wonder why people pay for this type of treatment, but after having read up on how The Bowen Technique works I can see that it can work well. After both sessions Alison asked me to drink plenty of water, which I did. I remember feeling very tired the day after the first session. Whether this was because I had nothing important to do that day (empty diary - bliss) or because of the treatment

I won’t know. Perhaps it was my brain asking my body to relax? My bad back is now much much better than it was in April and I’m looking forward to getting back to the gym again! Do have a look at Alison’s website www.haybowen. com It’s extremely informative and the testimonials speak for themselves. It will give you a better insight into the treatment than I’ve got space to give you here. A couple of examples: Having seen the remarkable difference that Alison and Bowen made to my wife’s mobility and back pain I decided to give it a try before an operation. I went with an open mind not expecting much. I hadn’t realised how tense my muscles were until they started moving freely again! And I can now straighten my shoulders for the first time in years. Bowen certainly works for me. Mr M. T. I particularly like the Bowen treatment because it is non-invasive, gentle - and it works. For me, the current problem areas and longstanding, deeprooted ailments are addressed. The body really is the best healer - and Bowen facilitates this. Mrs D. D. Clare Williams

artists, including silver jewellery and leather boxes from Timbuktu.

‘The Artful Hare’ is a new book featuring the original prints of 74 British printmakers, including Victoria Keeble from The Hay Makers Gallery in Hay-on-Wye, and is arguably the biggest collection of hare-themed artwork ever assembled in book form, with 375 different images. Natural Beauty: coconut oil The health benefits of coconut oil include hair care, skin care, stress relief as well as being a super food say ‘organicfacts.net’. Coconut oil can improve your skin as it is full of vitamin e, which encourages the growth and repair of skin cells, protecting against aging and drying, while also making it beautifully smooth and soft. It is also rich in certain proteins, which are essential for cell repair, speeding up healing time, which helps to make your skin look fresher and more radiant. It is a superfood as it has lots of MCT’s (good fats) The body uses MCTs to produce energy, boost metabolism and help your body use fat for energy, so it can actually help you become leaner. Also rich in lauric acid, which has anti-viral and antibacterial properties, for a healthy immune system and to help fight infections. You can use coconut oil as body moisturiser, apply directly to skin, or a hair conditioner. This is why my soap is made from a whopping 50% of coconut oil, the other 50% is olive oil (also full of minerals and vitamins) and of course precious essential oils and a dash of vitamin e. All good simple ingredients.

Each bar of soap is made with simple ingredients, just olive oil – rich in vitamins, minerals and proteins; coconut oil – nourishing and moisturising; beeswax & a dash of vitamin e. With precious essential oil and botanicals.

TALGARTH TOWN COUNCIL Dog Control Order Talgarth Town Council intends to introduce a dog control order covering all areas used for sport or childrens’ recreation in the Talgarth area. The purpose of such order is to make it an offence to permit a dog to foul areas designated as sports pitches or for childrens’ play. It will also be an offence to permit a dog to enter the general playing field areas unless on a lead of less than 2 metres in length. The purpose of this order is to protect Public Health. Some dogs may carry bacteria and worms that might be present in dog faeces. Some of them, like toxocara canis, can cause disease or infections in humans. Toxocara canis is a roundworm found in dogs. Roundworm eggs are found in dog faeces, which can easily be picked up by young children and can cause the disease toxocariasis. This causes stomach upsets, sore throats, asthma and, in rare cases, blindness. The eggs can remain active in the soil for many years, long after the dog mess has weathered away.

Powys - More Caring than we think! Celebrate Carers Week 8th – 14 June Who are Carers? People who care for loved ones are some of society’s unsung heroes; one in twelve children and many adults too. When Carers Week was launched at the Senedd, Professor Mark Drakeford AM, Minister for Health and Social Services said: “All of us at some point in our lives are either going to be caring for someone or need the help of a Carer, so it’s in all our interests to get better support in place and to really recognise the huge contribution they make to our society. We sometimes think we’re an uncaring society; but with more than 121,000 people in Wales becoming Carers for older, sick or disabled loved ones every year, the numbers suggest otherwise.” Help for Carers of all Ages In Powys Powys Carers Service is the local charity that offers charity in place of voluntary organisation. free and confidential support, with information, advice, advocacy and counselling. Young Carers can meet in groups, have support at school and access trips and activities. Both adult and young Carers report a whole range of benefits from being involved with Powys Carers Service – Reflections from a Young Carer……”My life now” “Before I started coming to clubs I was hanging around with the wrong people who broke the law. We were often involved with criminal damage, trespassing and stealing. Life at home was stressful and it was my way of getting away from it all. Then one day someone told me about Young Carers support. They told me about the clubs and I thought I’d like to meet some new people similar to me. Coming to the clubs has changed my attitude to a lot of things. Like now when my mum or dad asks me to do something I’ll do it. I’m also becoming more sociable each day and I’ve got more confidence in myself. My goals in life have changed and now as I realise there’s all sorts of paths I could take. I’m looking forward to my future. Family life has improved a lot too. I used to fight with my brother every day but now we get along much better cos I understand him more and what he’s going through with his autism. At Young Carers I’ve got friends I can trust and I’m starting to let people in a bit more” A Powys Young Carer Are you a Carer? If you are caring for someone you may or may not want or need support; either way, you can join the

growing band of Carers who register with Powys Carers Service gaining the opportunity to be a member of the iCare Card scheme, the emergency card scheme and UK wide financial benefits with CarerSmart. You are also very welcome to strengthen the voice of the community of Carers. Help us to make all Carers count! For more information call 01597 823 800 or visit www.powyscarers.org.uk.

1st Clyro Rainbow and Brownies Unit A new Rainbow and Brownie Unit has recently opened up in Clyro after many years without any Girlguiding units in the Hay area. The unit is already thriving with c. 25 girls aged 5-7 (Rainbows) and 7-10yrs (Brownies) attending from 5 local schools and sufficient adult help to make this possible. However all offers of help and support will always be gratefully considered, no matter how ad hoc or unusual, so as to provide the girls with as many varied opportunities as possible. There is a long history of Girl Guiding, in the Hay area, dating back to shortly after the creation of Girl Guides in 1910! Miss B Deveraux of Tregoyd was one of the first Girl Guides in Hay and this painting of her was done in 1913 (The original is in Girlguiding UK CHQ in London). Girlguiding UK is the leading charity for girls and young women in the UK. Thanks to the dedication and support of 100,000 amazing volunteers, we are active in every part of the UK, giving girls and young women a space where they can be themselves, have fun, build brilliant friendships, gain valuable life skills and make a positive difference to their lives and their communities. Although the Clyro Unit is nearing full it is hoped other new units may be opened in the area over time, subject to additional new leaders coming forward. News from......

The 2nd is installed on the Village Hall wall in Clyro. Others have been allocated and will be fitted in the centre of Talgarth and in Hay-on-Wye.

The Black Mountains Lions Club

Heartstart Brecon have supplied the machines and the fitting is carried out by Brecon Fire and Safety.

The Black Mountains Lions have launched an exciting project by currently funding & supplying various sites in our community with defibrillators.

They are easy and failsafe to use – no training is required.

This important project has been undertaken by the Black Mountains Lions Club as after a cardiac arrest every minute without CPR reduces someone’s survival by 10%. In our scattered community it is therefore vital to have fast access to emergency aid and it is not always available. To date we have agreed 4 machines at a cost of £1500 each, plus fitting costs. The area of Three Cocks is served by the first machine which is installed outside the entrance to the Gwernyfed School Sports hall. The School is happy to maintain the machine as part of their extended service in the community.

Further funding by the Black Mountains Lions club has been allocated towards any future requests from our community. Anyone wishing further information please contact: Lion David James on 0845 8337403 Fairtrade Hay It seems like a long time ago now, but thank you to everyone who participated in our Fairtrade Fortnight celebrations back in February. We had an insightful and inspirational talk with a Malawian sugar farmer, Allan Saidi, and local journalist Oliver Balch. Sugar has remained on the Fairtrade agenda due to the planned removal of the quota on European sugar beet production. With more sugar produced

in Europe, the livelihoods of Fairtrade farmers like Allan are under threat. Fairtrade Hay along with more than 70,000 others wrote to our MEPs about the far reaching impact of this decision. Jill Evans MEP shares our concerns and is raising the matter with the European Commission. Fairtrade Hay supported the fantastic Africa Day, organised by Medics4Timbuktu, at the Parish Hall during the Festival. We’re also thinking about a late summer get together so look out for posters or visit our Facebook page for details. We’ll be flying Hay’s flag at the International Fairtrade Towns Conference which takes place in Bristol in July. We’ll be discussing the importance of Fairtrade and finding out what other towns do to promote it in their areas. As summer comes upon us, don’t forget you can shop Fairtrade here in Hay. Eighteen Rabbit, Flow and Number Two offer Fairtrade clothing, and all of Hay’s grocery stores offer Fairtrade tea, coffee and sugar. There are some newcomers on the coffee shop front in Hay, so if they aren’t offering it already, please ask for a Fairtrade cuppa!

Glasbury Get Together Club Our April meeting enthused gardeners amongst us, when we welcomed Gareth Davis, a passionate rose grower. Slides from past times in Gareth’s garden recalled changes in style and planting and an abundance of colour. Questions answered as we travelled the journey. A really enjoyable afternoon, even for non gardeners. Next meeting is Wednesday, 24th June. We have a return visit from Val Tyler to Glasbury Village Hall, 2.30 - 4.30pm, when she will be talking about The Brontes. Raffle and refreshments later. Small items donated for raffle prizes always appreciated. Guests and new members welcome. Outing on Thursday, 11th June to Wales National Botanical Gardens. Booking £10 deposit please, travel cost depending on response. Leave Glasbury Village Hall 9.30am. Outing on Wednesday, 8th July to Hampton Court, Herefordshire. Details as above. The Sixth Form also competed in 5 aside football and pupils took part in the Powys School Paddling Regatta.

Gwernyfed High School It has been a fantastic few sporting months here at Gwernyfed with pupils throughout the school taking part in many different sports events. Our congratulations go to the new Under 12 and Under 13 Powys Rugby Champions. PE teacher Mr Miller said ‘I am exceptionally proud of all who represented the school. They were fantastic on and off the pitch’. Well done boys! Nicola Jones took the schools various Badminton teams to compete in the South West Wales Badminton competition where they too were named the champions.

However, Sport is also being used to help encourage some of our younger pupils with their reading. The success of the Premier League Reading Stars pupils continued with a visit to Swansea City Academy training grounds and a tour of Liberty Stadium. The scheme continues to be very effective in motivating our children to read and improving literacy levels in boys. The boys were treated to a tour of the academy, watched the Under 18’s training and completed the day with a tour of the Liberty Stadium. The boys had a fantastic day – Bernie Leaman, Year 7 said – ‘Thanks for today Miss, it’s been really inspirational!’ Hayfield Organic Garden Work Days 2015 Wednesdays and Saturdays 10.00am - 1.00pm June: digging remaining beds, planting out seedlings. Jokes

by Father & Son

(Colan & James Badham) Visiting his grandparents, a small boy opened the big family Bible. He was fascinated as he fingered through the old pages. Suddenly, something fell out. He picked it up and found that it was an old leaf that had been pressed flat between the pages. “Mum, look what I found,” he called out. “What have you got there, dear?” his mother asked. “With astonishment in his voice, the boy answered, “I think it’s Adam’s underwear!”

Family time …

Summer issue ...

Our Cariads Family Magazine has proven very popular with local families. I am a mother myself: step-son James who is 10 years old; Cariad who is 2 years old; and Otis who is just a few weeks old. I know first hand, especially with children of different ages, that I need to do my research for days out, places to shop, places to eat, holiday clubs, etc. Working on the last 3 issues of this publication has proved invaluable. Learning of places and services I didn’t know existed. And all relatively local. I don’t mind taking the family that little bit further on a family day out, so felt it important to show case some of these ideas too. For our Summer issue we have added Kington, Michaelchurch and Peterchurch to our list. We will now be delivering to Primary Schools, Nurseries, community points and tourist information centres in these additional areas (as well as our existing towns and villages). This issue will run from July – October 2015. If you would like to come aboard this exciting and growing magazine, please give us a tinkle or send us an email. See advert opposite.

Yak-Y-Da

local family magazine If you offer a service, a product or events & classes for children aged 0 - 12 years then Cariads Local Family Magazine is right up your street! Before the 2015 Summer Holidays, this magazine will be packed into the Children’s bags at their School or Nursery, going direct to the decision makers the parents or carers. We are the only magazine of this kind to go to both Primary Schools AND Nurseries in the following areas: Brecon, Bronllys, Builth, Clifford, Clyro, Crickhowell, Eardisley, Hay, Kington, Llangattock, Llangorse, Llangynidr, Llyswen, Michaelchurch, Peterchurch, Sennybridge, Talgarth and Whitney.
