I want to kick off with some news about this year’s Car Boot Sales. They will start in April and run until October. We are moving location to Gwernyfed High School, and have an option to use the large sports hall. What with our typical British weather it will mean EVERY Car Boot Sale will run, come rain or shine. After speaking with many people, positive feedback has suggested that we hold the Car Boot Sales during the afternoon instead of the morning, and that is what we will now do. Please take a look at page 20 for more details. Secondly I am chuffed with the sales of this years Local Landscapes Calendar. As we go to print we have limited stock left at HQ. So if you haven’t received a copy as you’d have hoped for Christmas, please drop us a line and we will let you know your nearest outlet. Thank you to everyone who purchased and to each and every stockist. If they were gifts to people who live away, let’s hope they come and visit our beautiful area sometime soon. News from Talgarth by Cllr. William Powell Powys County Councillor for Talgarth Although it is difficult to believe, the New Year is upon us once again, with its mix of public and private reflections on the past 12 months and on the times to come. I am sure that Wye Local readers will already be weighing up New Year resolutions and speculating on what 2015 will mean for themselves, their family, friends and neighbours. The past year has once again proved to be a challenging one for many people in our town and the wider community. We still face difficult times as a nation and locally too the year has brought with it a fair share of highs and lows. As I gather my thoughts for this first column of the New Year, it is just a month since our community came together at the Cenotaph in solemn remembrance of those who made the ultimate sacrifice. That moving ceremony, and the unveiling of the original, now restored memorial plaque in Talgarth Town Hall, dedicated to the fallen of World War One, are etched in our memory. But as we enter 2015, which marks the centenary of the first full year of that conflict, coming directly after the poignant Christmas truce and football match between the opposing sides, we would do well once again to recall the words of Harry Patch, the ‘last fighting Tommy.’ Harry warned against the dangers of glamourising warfare. He knew at first hand its true horrors but died sure in the knowledge that, whilst our planet is still strife riven, war on our own continent had been made unthinkable by international cooperation, including our shared membership of both the European Union and NATO.

At a time when the national discourse is dominated by suspicion of those of different heritages, speaking different languages – and even in some people’s eyes, causing motorway congestion – I find such a twinning between different countries on our continent a powerful force for good. In the New Year, there will be an opportunity to raise these issues with the Welsh Minister for Health and Social Services, Professor Mark Drakeford AM. His support will be critical if the precious resource that we have in Bronllys Hospital is to be developed to its full potential for the next generation. At the moment, we are still enjoying the wonderful efforts of Talgarth Lights Group and we really do owe them a debt of gratitude. We are so lucky to have such a pool of local volunteers in our community – without them our lives would be so much the poorer. Here in Talgarth, it is immensely heartening that 2014 has seen the blossoming of a new international friendship through our twinning with Pizzoferrato, a mountain village in the Abruzzo region of central Italy. The warmth and enthusiasm for this initiative was evident to all who attended the celebration

News from Glasbury Ward by Chris Davies Powys County Councillor for Glasbury May I start by wishing everyone a very happy and prosperous 2015. A New Year with New Challenges and New Beginnings. We can look back on a wonderful time in the run up to Christmas where families and communities got together and great times were had. Local events that stand out for me include the Painscastle Pantomime which just gets better and funnier each year; The Christmas Tree festival in St Peters Church; The Christmas Fetes; The Christmas plays in schools together with the many carol services and events. It was also good to see our Towns being busy and people shopping locally. My children had a great time and they must have been good all year (well most of it!) as Father Christmas arrived once again. We now turn to the year ahead. At Powys there is already discussion and movement within the council structure as we try and anticipate the Budget ahead

and also where the cuts will be implemented. This is of a great concern to us all and you can be assured that I will be looking closely at the proposals being put forward by our Independent Cabinet. In just four month’s time we will have a General Election in this country and therefore being a Parliamentary Candidate in Brecon & Radnorshire, life is very busy indeed.Who knows what this year will bring for any of us. It may bring many changes; many times to celebrate and many times to commiserate. Whatever lies in front of us – I hope it’s all good and wish you all well for the year ahead. You could though! “Yay Suzi – not seen you in ages!” “Ah, well I’m really in to my running right now, I’ll see you in the winter though, I promise!” “If you’re keeping fit that’s all that matters hun”… yet as I walk away from this conversation, something bothers me big time. It always does. It’s this: No matter what you’re currently doing for your fitness, if you’re missing out on any aspect of fitness, indeed of LIFE, you’ll have a less than all-rounded experience! So: the runner’s cardio fit, (and that’s great) - but working in the ‘sagittal plane’ only (forwards, never sideways), certain major muscles get too tight, over facilitated, and prone to injury, whilst others are getting amnesia! Worse; ask a treadmill runner how his buttocks are, (if you dare!); they’ll often be non-existent as the driving belt extends his hips FOR him (not his gluteals)… The competitive runner might be a superb athlete but his constant “fight, flight or freeze” response has shot cortisol about his body for so long he might desperately need a ‘counterbalance’ such as Yoga (this would be good for his flexibility too). The footballer

who never stretches is begging for a hamstring injury next time he does a high kick. Studio exercisers who never get out into the open air are missing out big time too (we NEED the sun!), Mind-Body aficionados who never do cardio will be hammered if they ever need to move fast and long! We need sharp reflexes, an awareness of body in space (proprioception), we need balance (especially as we get older).. Maybe most of all we need to be STRONG! Try this: Incorporate strength for all ages, (weights), cardio, (circuits, running, gym), meditation, (Yoga, meditation classes), reflexes (table tennis, netball, team sports), Flexibility & Balance (Yoga, Pilates, Thai Chi, dance), there are so many more I could mention, but in trying them you can improve your overall fitness outrageously! Local Talent: Jonathan Oddy Artist Name? Jonathan Oddy. Type of Artist? Furniture Designer / Maker. Range of Products? Fine Furniture made to commission. Everything from Dining Tables to Jewellery Boxes. Where can your products be purchased? I work to commission so have no items to purchase off the shelf. Clients have normally seen my work at an exhibition, and then contact me with some sort of idea of what they want. We have a discussion about their requirements, and I will prepare some designs and make timber suggestions. We work together to get the design and function right, and when they are happy I make them their furniture. The design process is always free of charge, it’s a joint effort. Price range? Not as much as you might think. How long have you been an artist? I’ve been making furniture for around 10 years. Where did you train or gain experience? I have always enjoyed the practical / technical side of the creative arts. I worked as a Photographers assistant then Film Cameraman before switching to Furniture making. I spent a year learning the basics of Cabinetmaking in Devon under Christopher Faulkner. Chris was definitely of the old school: I spent 6 weeks just practicing how to hand cut dovetails. It sometimes felt more of an endurance test than a course. What has been your proudest moment? Finally cutting a set of mitred dovetails that Chris thought “Not too bad”. What would you class as ‘your masterpiece’? Without doubt an English Walnut Dining Chair that I made a few years ago. I was lucky to have some really beautiful Walnut in my workshop and the design of the chair seems in harmony with this beautiful timber. It also really tested my making skills. Have you any future plans for your work? I would like to take a few more risks with the design of my furniture. I have a few ideas in my head that are very different to my current style. I also want to test my making skills a lot more, and a push in a

new direction might provide the platform to really find out what I can do. The difficult bit is making a living from it all. What advice would you give a local artist? I don’t know if I am in any position to give advice! Be honest with your timescales and deadlines, and always keep the client informed. Be true to yourself and charge what your work and skills are worth. What other local artists do you admire? My degree was in Graphic Design and so I tend to veer towards good design. There are few better than Richard Evans. Artist statement: It’s all about the timber. Whenever possible I use native hardwoods; each piece carefully selected for its texture, colour and grain pattern. In time this wood takes on new hues and rich tones. A successful piece of furniture should be quietly pleasing, fitting into a room for years to come.

The Thoughts of a Greengrocer Looking back 2014 was not a bad year. Trade was reasonable but not as good as we wanted, but isn’t that always the way? The weather was kind to us and crops good. Prices remained sensible except for one or two little peaks - and then only involving one or two products. Before Christmas cauliflowers went sky high causing sales to drop so I am hoping that by the time you are reading this they’ll be back to normal. It looks as though the supermarkets are going to have a harder time of it than over the last couple of decades - it’ll be nice to see them having to work to earn their money. Shopping is changing and the big out of town shed supermarkets with acres of tarmacadam car parking are losing out to a combination of online shopping where it is delivered to the door but you get what you are given, and smaller shopping on a more frequent basis in convenience shops within the towns. This latter is nice for the existing traders to see as the convenience shops tend to be more highly priced than the out of towners and it gives us a chance to put our wares before you and hopefully sell you something. The downturn in the fortunes of Tesco and their style of supermarket demonstrate how lucky we were to avoid having one in Hay - which would now be half built and abandoned - the worst of all worlds. It is a salutary lesson that the big boys are not always right and we were right to take the fight to them. As is usual at this time of year I must impress upon you that the Seville Orange season is short and you run a risk if you postpone making your marmalade too long. By now the oranges should have started arriving but I make no promises as I learned from one colour supplement that did a big thing on recipes etc. for marmalade saying that the fruit was in the shops from before Christmas, only to find that the article written in the summer was superceded by appalling weather in Spain and the oranges didn’t arrive until mid January. The other treat at this time of year is the arrival of the blood oranges which hopefully go on to the end of February. There should be plenty of British apples about and lots of winter vegetables. With luck fuel prices will remain low which should help the price of imported goods. May I wish you all a very happy New Year.

Wild in January

Protecting wildlife for the future

Now is the time to spot Mistletoe. Much of the Mistletoe you will see in our county is growing on Poplar trees but it can be seen also on Hawthorn, Lime, Maple, Rowan and Apple. More rarely, as on the road between Hay and Glasbury, an Ash tree with plants can be found. But the most elusive host is Oak and there is plenty of folklore going back to the Druids attached to that combination. Many medicinal properties were ascribed to the plant in the past – especially if it was cut without the use of iron. Do let Brecknock Wildlife Trust know if you find any on an Oak tree. This plant is a hemi-parasite – it depends on the host tree for the water and minerals that roots in the ground would normally provide but does have its own chlorophyll for photosynthesis. The flowers are not very significant but can be seen from about February if you can get a close look. This fascinating website has pictures of every stage

You will learn how to accurately measure your body, transferring these measurements onto dressmaking patterns so that they reflect your size and shape. You will be given support to choose patterns that celebrate your shape, turning these into beautifully finished clothes. In the first couple of weeks you will create a ‘block’ –

an accurately measured paper replica of your body shape. Once you have completed your block, you could use it not only to create garments to fit your unique shape, but also if you wish, to alter vintage or other items so that they fit you properly. Having these tools to hand will open up so many fashion doors that otherwise might have remained closed. This class is suitable for anyone from complete beginners who’ve never touched a sewing machine, through to intermediate sewers who would like to enhance their skills and try new things. Breakthrough in getting a future Health Park in the grounds of Bronllys Hospital! On Wednesday the 3rd December the Powys Health and Well Being Action Group presented the “Bronllys Park” proposals to the Breconshire Community Health Council, in Talgarth. They were able to tell the Health Council that the proposals had been given the thumbs up by Chief Executives of the Health Board and the County Council just days before, in Builth. In January 2014 the Group had responded to the Health board asking the public what ideas they might have for the grounds of Bronllys Hospital. NHS Wales only needed to keep 10 acres, and 65 acres would become available in the future. Instead of mass house-building, the group came up with “Bronllys Park”, a Well Being Park with

the Community Hospital at the heart of it. Using landscaping to retain its beauty, discreet homes, care and sports facilities will be there to meet local needs, e.g. Maggie Day Centre and Bron Home offering 40 places to people with dementia. You can see all that is proposed on the Bronllys Community Council Website. Bronllys Park will actually put money back into the community by using the Garden City principles. To do this the land must be long leased from the Welsh Government who we are told will own it; the next hurdle for the PH&WB?

It was made by Roy Strong and his wife, theatre designer Julia Trevelyan Oman, between 1973 and 2003. His illustrated lecture, is based on his account of the remaking of the garden – Remaking a Garden: The Laskett Transformed. One of the gems that our research has uncovered is a 100-year-old copy of Country Life Magazine featuring the then-newly refurbished home of the Dowager Lady Glanusk. Described as “a dignified threestoreyed block of weathered, roughly course pink sandstone, with the roof-line broken by massive red brick chimney-stacks”, it is, of course, Hay Castle. The Sept 26th, 1914 issue describes Hay as “like many a Border town that has spread from a Norman castle. The broad bed of the Wye, where there once was a ford, is bridged and on its southern or Herefordshire bank the town straggles up to the castle and church”. The article, heavy in historical detail, mentions traces of a moat found during excavation “from which it appears that the castle was surrounded by a moat on sides unprotected by the town wall”.

The Country Life article features photographs of the lush interior, which had been recently restored by Caroe Architects, a notable firm that is still around today. One photo shows “a wide oak staircase, with tall finialled newel-posts and pierced balusters” from the original 17th century decoration. Only a small section of that hand-carved treasure remains today. Also gone is the rich oak panelling, and most of the mullioned windows that were later replaced with sash windows. Just 20 years after the publication of the article, in 1937, Hay Castle was gutted by fire. Today, Hay Castle awaits a regeneration of sorts, with funding from Heritage Lottery Fund, Brecon Beacons Trust, CHK Charities, Cadw and many other generous supporters. News from The annual Smith-Soldat Memorial Lecture at the end of November was a sell out. Guests packed into Hay Castle to hear speaker Major Gordon Corrigan MBE, discuss his recent book on Waterloo, as part of the Hay Festival Winter Weekend. Meanwhile, historic researcher and Chair of Hay History Group, Alan Nicholls has collated reports from the archive of the Brecon County Times that relate to Hay during WWI. So far articles have described how the Hay Territorials marched off to jubilant applause in August 1914. Then, just one and a half months later, the first death was reported; that of Lieutenant W. de Winton of Maesllwch Castle who died at the Front aged 21. It is well worth calling into the Cheese Market each week to read the posters and learn a little about Hay This Time 100 Years Ago. Looking to the year ahead, our next meeting on Wednesday 14th January, 8pm, in the Swan Hotel, will host guest speaker Bryan Davies talking about the Battle of Agincourt, the Welsh Longbows men and plans to celebrate the 600-year anniversary of the Battle later this year. News from Hay Town Council The new financial year is just around the corner. Over the next five years Powys County Council has to cut its budget by up to ÂŁ40m and they have indicated that many of the non-statutory services that they presently provide will either be reduced or in some cases cease. To avoid this they have approached Town & Community Councils to give them, or other community groups, the opportunity to take on and deliver those services which they consider important to their community. Prior to receiving this notification, the Town Council had realised that a number of services which were important to Hay were at risk and decided to approach Powys CC to express an interest in taking on a package of services, e.g. public toilets, play areas, sports facilities, the library etc (the list is extensive). As a result Hay has been chosen along with four other towns to pilot the concept of community delivery and the Town Council has recently met with Jeremy Patterson(CEO Powys CC) who is the nominated senior officer to oversee the pilot in Hay.

Finally the Town Council have been advised that the Cemetery is approaching capacity. We have been talking with Powys CC to consider a way forward. Currently Powys CC considers option (2) as the most viable solution, however the Town Council is very keen to retain facilities for burial in Hay and are exploring the possibility of an extension to the existing cemetery. At the same time work is progressing on the Town Plan. This will be a comprehensive document which will be accessible to all and will describe our collective perception of the sort of town the residents of Hay-on-Wye would like to live and work in the future. We are doing this at the invitation of the Brecon Beacons National Park. Hay is being used as a pilot scheme for other towns and communities in the park. Staff from the BBNP and Powys CC are closely involved in this work. The two aspects of work ie the transfer of assets and local services, and the Town Plan, should be seen as complementing each other. The latter could form the basis of planning in the town for the next decade.The information gathered at the stakeholder consultation meeting held in September will help
