Welcome to our 100th issue! What a milestone. If the team weren’t so busy I’d organise a meeting for us to reflect, to take a look at past issues, improvements made ... But deadlines are deadlines and our priorities are getting Wye Local out by the 1st of the month, every month. We have some great new advertisers joining us this month: the Festival of British Cinema inform you of their upcoming Borderlines Film Festival, Haydn Jones offers some vocal coaching, Bryngwyn Riding Centre, try something new or improve your riding; Décor Solutions for your painting and decorating needs, Chen style Tai Chi is due to start in Hay on Wye, Wye Valley Autos offers car sales, servicing and repairs; ATK Removals who are specialists in removals and storage and Mill Cottage Interiors are opening in Talgarth. Don’t of course forget our regular advertisers offering their local services or products. Support locally! You heard it here last month - our Car Boot Sales will commence April 2015, changing location to Gwernyfed High School with a new afternoon slot. Please turn to page 48 for the list of dates and other important information. Remember to spread the word that each one will be guaranteed to take place. With an indoor option not even the British weather can touch us this year! We are currently looking for Stewards to join our team, if you are available on some or all of the dates, please get in touch for more information. I myself will have my hands full with a new arrival ... For those who haven’t seen me recently, I can be found waddling! Baby Badham is due April this year! My step son James is very excited, hoping for a little brother. Cariad on the other hand is a tad confused, she has announced the baby will be called Boy Badham Sister! The team will update you once he or she makes their safe arrival. Enjoy, Lisa Marie Badham x (Photo above: Cariad & Lisa Marie Badham)

This months prize up for grabs... is a free 21 point Winter Check kindly donated by Wye Valley Autos. Please complete the word search on page 42 and send to us by 16th February 2015.

News from Talgarth by Cllr. William Powell Powys County Councillor for Talgarth As I draw together my thoughts for this month’s column, we are experiencing a cold snap of traditional January weather and blizzard warnings, in what has so far been an incredibly mild, wet winter. Even those who yearn for traditional, old fashioned winters would concede that the milder conditions are better for families in terms of heating costs - as well as for the farmers, whose fodder stocks have been holding out better this year. 2015 has started on a positive note for Talgarth, with the Town Council setting a precept for the coming financial year which will enable us to proceed with key projects such as taking on the custodianship of King George V Sports Pavilion and the associated leisure facilities, as well as the town centre toilets both from Powys County Council. I commend our Mayor, Cllr Andy Lord, and fellow Town Councillors for having the courage to step up to the plate in order to safeguard these facilities for the wider community. The dilemmas faced by Powys County Council in these financially stringent times also confront local authorities throughout Wales - and it is heartening to see our Town Council taking on a genuine leadership role, without placing an undue burden on local residents. Once again, as a community, we are at our best when we stand united to protect those things that we value the most. As we turn our calendars to February, the senior citizens of Talgarth & District will once again be looking forward to the weekly Luncheon Club, whose volunteers have had a well deserved rest during January. At a time when Day Centres and Meals on Wheels for our senior citizens throughout Powys are under threat, it is remarkable that we have a resilient group of volunteers, who provide such a quality service free of public subsidy. As Talgarth

Luncheon Club enters its New Year, I once again salute their efforts. Another example of volunteering in our community, which we should never take for granted, is the sterling work of our retained fire fighters. Here in Talgarth, as in Crickhowell and Hay on Wye, generations have given selflessly of their time to safeguard others in the face of danger. As I know from recent first hand experience, their service is second to none. There are currently opportunities to join the team here in Talgarth - if interested, pop into the Fire Station any Tuesday between 7 and 9pm to find out more. This month also sees the Brecknock YFC’s 68th Annual Drama/Pantomime Festival. It kicks off on Monday, 9th February at Theatr Brycheiniog and culminates in the Gala Evening on Saturday, 14th. It is always a feast of entertainment, once again made possible by volunteers - the Club leaders, but also many other locals who come forward to offer their time and skills. I am looking forward to attending myself but, like you, I will need to move quickly to secure a ticket. The President of Brecknock YFC is none other than Talgarth’s own Cllr Andrew Bufton - and I am sure that he will also be delighted to welcome you to Theatr Brycheiniog during the week. In the meantime, if you have any feedback, issue of concern or if I can help you in any way, please do not hesitate to contact me on 07703 112113 or by email: william.powell@wales.gov.uk Alternatively, you can pop into Talgarth Tourist Information and Resource Centre (TiRC) at any time. My next advice surgery takes place there on Friday 6th February from 5:00pm – no appointment is necessary. Best wishes, William

News from Glasbury Ward by Chris Davies Powys County Councillor for Glasbury As I sit down to write this month’s edition changes are afoot in County Hall. It now appears that there is a new ‘coalition’ forming between the Independent Groups aiming to run the authority – until the next change! Since becoming a County Councillor in May 2012 I have seen many changes at Llandrindod and I hope that this one will offer the stability that we badly need. You can be assured that I will be watching this situation very closely and taking action when needed. One matter which we are currently looking at is the Budget for the next financial year. Ideas are being put forward which will affect us all and I look forward to seeing the proposals and voting accordingly. Our Town and Community Councils are also looking at their precepts and I hope to see During the month of February, Liz and I look forward to visiting many events. Included in these are both the Radnorshire and the Breconshire finals of the

YFC’s Pantomime’s. There is enormous talent with our young members and I have no doubt that this year will again produce the high standard that we have come to expect. I am also very pleased that Llanigon YFC will be hosting this year’s Breconshire Rally in Felindre in June. With the General Election on May 7th I am now on the campaign trail full time and trying to reach into every part of Brecon & Radnorshire, which just happens to be the largest constituency in England and Wales. I look forward to seeing you on my rounds but please don’t forget that should you have a matter that needs my attention, don’t hesitate to get in touch. Contact me on any matter: 07855 752110 or email: cllr.chris.davies@powys.gov.uk Best wishes Chris

Gardening Column

CHEN STYLE

TAI CHI Laojia, 19 form, Standing Meditation, Silk reeling & Chi Gong

Classes starting Tuesday 10th February 2015 6pm-7pm First night 6pm-8pm GALANTHUS – “SNOWDROPS” In the eyes of many gardeners, the Snowdrop is the real sign that spring is just around the corner, flowering as they do in late winter. There is no better sight in the short, cold days of February than the white, nodding flower heads and the narrow, strap-like, grey-green leaves of the Snowdrop. They are equally at home in rockeries, troughs, beneath trees and shrubs and on woodland edges where they will quickly naturalise. They can be planted as dormant bulbs in September or October as long as they have not been allowed to dry out excessively but most people have more success with bulbs already in growth or by dividing congested clumps once flowering is over in March or April. This “planting in the green” is a great way to establish large, eye catching drifts of colour which will light up those dark winter days. The common Snowdrop, Galanthus nivalis, has single flowers with a green mark at the tip of each inner petal but there are lots of other varieties now available, some with double flowers and others with green markings on different parts of the petals. Make sure that your garden contains at least a few of these “harbingers of Spring” but don’t forget that there are also many other early flowering bulbs such as the lovely, yellow flowered Winter Aconite, the dwarf Narcissi such as “February Gold” and Crocuses in a range of colours from white, through cream and yellow to blue and purple. What is your detoxification potential? Looking at it from a chemical perspective, much of what goes on in the body is fairly simple: Substances are broken down, built up and turned from one thing into another. 80% of this involves detoxifying potentially harmful substances. Most of that work is undertaken by the liver, which is effectively a clearing house, able to recognise millions of potentially harmful chemicals, transforming them into something harmless that can then be eliminated - is it just me that thinks the liver is a seriously clever piece of kit!? We often think of the liver processing toxins from what we ingest. Whilst it does do that, it does a whole lot more besides; Many toxins come from within the body itself. Every thought, every breath and every action we take and make can create toxins. These internal toxins are called endo-toxins whilst the external toxins are called exo-toxins. The endo-toxins have to be disarmed in exactly the same way as the exo-toxins.

Whether a substance is bad for you depends as much on your ability to be able to detoxify it as it is on its inherent toxic properties. It may help to encourage you to think of certain substances as exceeding your capacity to detoxify them as opposed to thinking of them as ‘bad’ foods/ drinks as that just conjures negative connotations. Our livers are amazing organs but despite their cleverness in helping us to reach a relatively cleansed state, please don’t take the mickey. For the more we give the liver to do (I like to call it buffering), the less it can devote to such things as fat loss, and feeling brilliant. Help it out! If you’d like to do my free, safe 2 day liver de-tox (although I also allow 5 days to come off caffeine slowly first), please e-mail me: cat@gymandtonichay.co.uk – you can use this for life – every month or so. Over time you’ll start to live the life your liver will love you for! No obligation. Article supplied by Cat Lawford, Gym & Tonic Health Club

In the Frame

The creative Jonathan Buck, owner of Forge Framing and Gallery has now been in business at Hay Craft Centre since March 2014. His loyal customers from the old shop in Eardisley, as well as many new customers from the Hay area are keeping him busy so it’s pretty much non-stop all the time. Due to the high volume of framing work for clients he has taken on the experienced and talented framer Louis English, and on a part-time basis, Stacey Wilding, who herself has been a Local Talent subject in a previous issue of Wye Local.

Car Body Repairs & Paint Spraying Adrian Finley Hay-on-Wye t: 01497 821831 M:07582 798826

A huge selection of framing mouldings from as little as ÂŁ15 can be purchased here. Plain wood in numerous colours and a number of handmade and hand finished products. Glass too, in various grades, all the way up to museum quality. Forge Framing is now framing for a number of prestigious galleries. However their core business is based on framing for local clients. e.g. Prints, photographs, oil paintings, fabrics, medals, sports shirts, in fact anything really that will fit into a frame! This year they plan to upgrade the Gallery side of the business; i.e. installing new lighting and improved display systems and to decorate the exterior of the property. As a local business Jonathan strives to make the process of framing a cherished item a pleasant and fun experience. They never pressure anyone into making a decision. Patience and empathy is very important to them. Do pay them a visit and experience for yourself. I am sure you will not be disappointed.

The Thoughts of a Greengrocer Already one month into 2015 - I have noticed that all the adverts and articles regarding food and ready meals are slanted to either imply or actually state as proven that the product is wonderfully good for the health and will save you from who knows what diseases or conditions. I tend to be sceptical about some of these claims. All fruit and vegetables eaten either raw or correctly cooked are good for you any harm comes from over indulging in one or two areas and not taking a balanced diet. As for the ready meals I can only suggest that you read in detail the tiny print that lists all the added chemicals and judge for yourself which of these are good for you. The fresh veg available at this time of year runs along the root vegetables and brassica lines. Both of these are readily available so far this winter and are of good quality and I would suggest cheaper than previous years. Fruit is harder to find without going for the imported items among which are the oranges. This has been an excellent year for citrus fruit with lovely blood oranges now around along with some beautiful large Navel oranges. By the time you are reading this article the Seville oranges will be running down. So far they have been very good and certainly cheaper than last year. Any day now I expect to see Florida Pink Grapefruit in the market - I am assured that they have sailed and are almost here.

Fresh fruit and vegetables, quality wines and local jams and preserves

Last November someone asked me about fresh root Turmeric - a rarity indeed at the time. However, I have been lucky and can now get it. It is a relative of the ginger family and you can see the similarity when they are side by side. This is something that has many health claims made for it and I, for one, cannot say how much truth there is in them. Certainly it is good in cooking particularly curries and yellow rice dishes. It can be added to juices and, indeed, one can get the juice from it using a garlic press. If anybody else has an idea about something that they would like to get then please let me know and I will see what I can do. Article supplied by Stuart Pritchard

Put a spring in your step We are now in February and spring will be here before you know it. The harsh winter weather tends to dry out our skin and leaves us feeling dull and dry. Put the spring back into your step this month by giving yourself a pamper session. Rejuvenate and recharge your batteries and make yourself feel wonderful. Either book into a beauty salon or spa or do it at home. I give you permission – in fact I am asking you to. Home pamper session: 1. Take a nice hot shower or aromatherapeutic bath. Add some bath salts or a natural rose geranium bath bom. 2. Use an exfoliating cloth, (natural sisal is good) – brush or sponge and scrub your whole body. Brush towards your heart to get your lymphatic system flowing. Brush your arms, legs, chest etc. Concentrate on elbows, heels and knees. You could even use a dry buffing brush or clean nail brush. 3. This is the fun bit. Get your favourite body lotion or body butter; (body butter is perfect for after the bath when the body is warm) and slather on. 4. Drink a nice glass of water and rest for 10 mins. Article by Jacqueline Kennett. Sources: flylady.net

Royston Memorial Hall Bronllys Just a year ago at the end of November 2013, a group of Bronllys residents came together for the first community coffee morning. Every Wednesday since then 25 to 35 people have met to enjoy a cup of tea or coffee and a slice or two of home made cake. Some people come occasionally whilst others come every week regardless of weather, (we have certainly had a few wet Wednesdays)

future please come to the coffee morning and let us know you are there. We have raised £2,500 in this first year, And we thank the Bronllys garage for their support and of course all of the cake makers and other people who have contributed to making it such a success.

It is a joy to hear the animated conversation and laughter as neighbours share a joke or maybe a bit of a gossip. And it does mean that it enables people to check if someone is missing and why. The main aim of the coffee morning was for just that, a community get together for a chat and a catch up on village events etc. However it soon became apparent that the Hall needed a bit of TLC. Because of a water leak in the kitchen some time ago, which although dealt with at the time had left some dampness, the kitchen had developed dry rot and it soon became un useable,The coffee morning had to decamp into the ante room. But soon that too was in trouble. A survey proved that the whole area at the front of the hall needs to be cleared and treated for the rot and re built. Because the Community Council who run the Hall cannot apply for the sort of funding required to do the work, a separate independent Village hall management committee has now been formed to enable grants to be applied for etc. Builders estimates are in and although it will take some time to get everything in place it is hoped that work can be started as soon as possible. Because dry rot waits for no man….. Six brave people have stepped up to the challenge and said they will form the first management committee. If you think you have any expertise that would help them with grant applications or any other part of running the Hall from now on, or any suggestions about how you would like to see the Hall used in

Jumped at the Chance! Becky Golesworthy and Tisha Greenow own and manage Little Stars Pre-school Hay. They have recently taken over the early years provision in Hay and have since registered as Little Stars Pre-school. They worked together at Hay Primary School as teaching assistants and were asked if they would like to take on the pre-school as a private business and they jumped at the chance! They were keen to create a fun place for learning and care, a place where parents are confident to leave their children and where children are offered the best care. They both have young children and know the difference it makes to have quality childcare to be able to rely on. They decided to extend the hours offered to full days and for the full year instead of just term time. They hope that by offering the extended hours, they can better support working families in the local area and be flexible in the care they offer. They are both enthusiastic about early learning and understand the importance of getting the first steps of learning right. Becky is a qualified Early Years teacher and Tisha holds a BTEC level 3 National Diploma in Early years and between them they have varied experience in childcare and education. They had a busy summer registering with the CSSIW, decorating the building, and attending courses. Both the children and the parents have commented on how bright and inviting the pre-school looks, so their hard work has paid off! They convey many thanks to Bob Golesworthy and Dave Jones for helping them to get the building ready.

Monday to Friday 8am to 5:45pm We are open throughout the year, only closing for bank holidays and for the Christmas period. We offer flexible, quality childcare for children from 2 years old. Our setting is a safe, caring place for children to learn and play.

Contact Us: Little Stars Pre-school is managed by Mrs Becky Golesworthy and Miss Tisha Greenow.

Telephone: 07532257971

email: littlestarspreschoolhay@gmail.com Oxford Road Hay-on-Wye HR3 5BT

We offer funded spaces for eligible 3 year olds, up to 10 hours a week. Please get in touch for session times and prices. We welcome visits from parents and are happy to answer any questions about our service.

Treating a wide range of Conditions

HAY ACUPUNCTURE

CLINIC

Established since 2000

In winter, Sandy Sandaver of Hay Acupuncture Clinic sees the usual ‘suspects’ emerge, such as coughs, colds, flu, anxiety, low energy, depression, arthritis, insomnia, bad backs, muscle strains and (male and female) fertility issues, all of which respond well to acupuncture. Spring often signals the start of the hay fever season and acupuncture is very effective.

SANDY SANDAVER

Sandy sees acupuncture as being similar to a GP’s work, since it is able to treat such a wide range of conditions. He addresses what is presented to him. A course of treatment involves a diagnostic assessment initially and a minimum of 6 treatments, depending on the condition. Many patients have top-up treatment sessions throughout the year.

Home visits undertaken Wide Range of Conditions Treated

Acupuncture is now recognised as the treatment of choice for many medical conditions, with a growing body of research and can be used alongside medication. The 3 year qualification in Traditional Acupuncture includes Anatomy, Physiology and Biology of Disease and Continuing Professional Development is ongoing to keep Sandy’s skill base up to date. He has been in practice for 26 years. It is a job that he loves and he always looks forward to seeing existing and new patients at his clinic. He will also carry out home visits if it is necessary. If you have any questions please contact SANDY at Hay Acupuncture Clinic on 01497 821625.

Bike

F

cus

A month into 2015 and we wonder how many cycling New Year resolutions made in the boozy flush of cut-price Cava have fallen by the wayside! Maybe you set a weekly mileage goal, or vowed to nail a particularly tough hill climb. Perhaps you’ve decided 2015 will be the year you clean that gnarly bit of trail you always sneak a dab on! Whatever promise you made, it can be tough to muster the enthusiasm to saddle up in the depths of winter, but a bit of club support and like-minded company turns a drab ride into a social occasion with the added bonus of keeping you fit! Luckily for you, Hay has its very own cycling club Velo Hay - with regular road and leisure rides leaving Drover Cycles on Tuesday evenings and Sunday mornings, occasional mountain bike excursions on Wednesdays and, coming soon, indoor turbo training sessions on Thursday nights.

In other news, Hay Cycling Festival - held in April for the past two years - is being been shelved for 2015 with a rolling programme of events taking place throughout the year instead. Keep an eye on the Drover Cycles Facebook page facebook.com/drovercycles for news of forthcoming events, including a dual slalom series and summer road bike sportive. News from Gwernyfed High School Gwernyfed High School constantly seeks to encourage its students to achieve their potential through pupil involvement in a variety of academic, musical and sporting endeavours. In order to continue supporting Gwernyfed’s talented pupils we are in desperate need of a new school minibus since the existing one has reached the end of its working life. Gwernyfed is renowned for its wide range of extra-curricular activities including sports fixtures, Duke of Edinburgh expeditions, educational visits, debating competitions and musical performances, all of which would be extremely difficult without a minibus. The minibus is also widely used by local community organisations such as Gwernyfed Rugby Club, Scout groups and YFCs. All are reliant on the availability of Gwernyfed’s transport as are the six local primary schools.

This is where we call on the support of pupils, parents, primary schools and the wider community to help us to reach our fund raising target of £10000. Pupils have already taken an active role in fundraising; through the annual Christmas Concert and bag packing in local supermarkets and so far have raised £1400. Our main fundraising extravaganza at the end of this term will be a Grand Easter Raffle. Raffle prizes and donations will be gratefully received. Please show your support as Gwernyfed High School’s Minibus Fundraising Campaign gets on the road and ready to roll! Article supplied by Felicity Jones (Senior Student)

News from

Hay Cheese Market continues to be a popular place to hold markets, sales and promotion events. The weekly Saturday Markets continue with a fantastic Local Produce Market, alternating with a Flea Market. The Local Produce Market offers some of the best local produce to eat right away, or to take home to create the perfect weekend lunch. The Friday Vintage Markets will begin anew from Good Friday, April 3rd. The beautiful flat above the Market Hall is available to hire year-round and is the perfect town centre bolthole for adults, or for overspill houseguests of local residents. We have received some fantastic comments from guests who stayed in 2014 and feel heartened by the warm response the building has received. Guests seem to genuinely appreciate the input of the local community into making Hay Cheese Market the welcoming place that it is and this leaves a positive impression on their whole visit to Hay. In April we will be organising an exhibition of photographs of the restoration of the building, to mark our first anniversary, and rolling out a new project bringing to life the story of a Victorian girl exploring Hay about 180 years ago. Visit www.haycheesemarket.org to find out more about booking the Cheese Market Hall, or the Flat.

Wild in February

Protecting wildlife for the future

Last autumn I was surprised to hear this flower, seen on a favourite beach, referred to as “Lady’s petticoat”. But it is a very appropriate name. Common by the sea, it is also found just below the peak of Pen y Fan in July. So the generally agreed name – “Sea Campion” isn’t really very accurate and I like the alternative more.

Trust Reserves and there are four work parties planned. New volunteers are always welcome.

Once there were many different local names for our wild-flowers which are rapidly becoming lost. The common Red Campion of our hedgerows used to be called “Red Bird’s Eye” in Radnorshire and can be seen at most times of year around our lanes. The other red one, Ragged Robin, is common in our wet meadows. Bladder Campion can occasionally be found in Brecknock and is very similar to the Sea Campion that is difficult to get to. This used to have names like “Billy Busters” and “White Cock Robin”.

Or come to the Brecon Wildlife Walk on the 22nd, chiefly for birds such as Goosanders, Dippers and Siskins. Details at bitly/bwtevents.

Thanks to Stephen Marshall for the photograph. February is a busy time in the Brecknock Wildlife
