Our October issue - what a struggle getting this one to press. Someone or something decided to play some early Halloween tricks on us. First my hard drive failed. After a visit to laptop hospital it returned home with a new Operating System, files still in tact but software lost. The worst upset was the loss of thousands of emails. So here is a big apology to any contributors who sent in what’s on listings or free ads - they may not appear in this issue as promised. Would these people please send their entries again if they will be relevant to our November issue. Huge sorry for any inconvenience caused. On a brighter note, we have some great features in this month’s issue. We showcase some fantastic venues for this years Christmas Parties - turn to page 13. To catch the organised, we exhibit some super Christmas Shopping ideas - go to page 16.You may think it’s a a bit early for any Christmas planning but if you’re anything like me, Christmas creeps up way to fast. Think early this year and spread out the shopping trips and pace yourself with the parties! Perhaps this turn in the weather is encouraging you to change your wardrobe or interior - you’ll be pleased to read our Fashion Tips on page 20 and our Interior DesignTips on page 32.Thank you to both contributors for taking the time to supply your knowledge. October will host our last two Car Boot Sales. There’s still time to clean out the loft, garage or spare room and make some money in time for Christmas.Thank you to everyone who has supported the sales so far. Since last months issue came out, my dad has felt a local celebrity! We’ve received some great nominations for the future ‘Get to really know’ features, but do keep them coming. We would like locals with character - and let’s be honest, there’s plenty of them! Be sure to read this issue cover to cover, as well as our regular contributors there are some great business features, news from local clubs and we’ve even extended our what’s on section to accommodate the many going ons in our area. Fingers, toes and legs crossed November issue will be a better experience all round! Lisa Marie x

In the last few weeks we have seen the final burst of a vintage summer but with the children back in school and the evenings lengthening, the colours of autumn are now quietly asserting themselves. In mid September, I spent a long weekend at the Liberal Democrat Federal Conference in Glasgow as part of a strong Welsh delegation. It is always good to catch up with party colleagues from the other nations and regions of the UK and Glasgow was a special venue with that in mind. However, by the Monday evening, I was back in Talgarth for an annual event which I always make a point of supporting. This year’s Creepy House Summer Reading Challenge proved very popular at Talgarth Library and it was a real pleasure to meet many of the 35 children and their families who had successfully completed the challenge. Special thanks to our branch librarian, Jan Shivel, for organising the awards event - and to Ydwena Jones, headteacher of Bronllys and Talgarth Schools, for all that she does to promote a strong entry from local children. Another sure sign of the changing seasons is the switch of focus from the Asylum Fields, home turf of Talgarth Cricket Club, to Trefecca Road and Westfields, where our local rugby and soccer teams are based. Not only did Talgarth Cricket Club have a top season, securing promotion to Marches League Division One but also inaugurated the Hubert Mytton Memorial Cup, in honour of his long years of service to the club. Doubtless, both the late Hubert Mytton and fellow stalwart Brian Davies who predeceased him are smiling down on Talgarth’s recent success. I was delighted to witness Gwernyfed RFC’s triumph over St Peter’s in the first match of the rugby season but news reached me of their triumph in the Brecon derby from Conference
in Glasgow. Finally, it is good to see Talgarth Town having a steady start to the season under new management. Crucially for the future of the game locally, there have been really good turnouts and an early win for Talgarth Town Juniors - and we should all be grateful for what Tom, Gavin and the crew make possible with their patient coaching. A constant feature in the life of our community - and one which we sometimes take for granted - is Talgarth Town Hall, hosting events and organisations that cater for all ages. Whether it’s Talgarth Luncheon Club, Zumba or the recently launched Talgarth Table Tennis Club, Talgarth Festival of the Black Mountains, Talgarth School productions or indeed the Country Market, the town hall is the backdrop. We should be grateful not just to the legions of volunteers who make these activities possible, but also to the caretaker team of Angela and Brian Dodds, Cllrs Andrew Bufton and Richard Reid who oversee the hall and of course Josephine Rumsey, who as Town Clerk coordinates the bookings. Finally, I would like to congratulate the Baker’s Table team at Melin Talgarth Mill on being shortlisted in the National Tourism Awards 2013 in the Best Cafe in Wales category. This is a major accolade - and I wish them every success in the final round. In the meantime, if there is anything that I can help you with, please don’t hesitate to contact me on 07703 112113 or by email: william.powell@wales.gov.uk Alternatively, please come along to my next advice surgery on Friday, 4th October from 5:30pm at Talgarth TiRC. You can also pop into the TiRC at any time to request a call on any issue that is troubling you. Best wishes William

News from Glasbury Ward
MAYALL JEWELLERS
by Chris Davies Powys County Councillor for Glasbury It’s hard to believe that we are already in October and Autumn is in full swing. The Harvest Festivals in our local churches and schools help us remember just how important agriculture is to our area and to our rural economy. The Harvest Auctions around the area also do so much to raise vital funds for local charities. I had the privilege of starting off the Auctions this year acting as Auctioneer on behalf of Hay Football Club in the Castle Hotel, Talgarth. This sporting/ harvest auction was being held in aid of ‘Naina’s Fundraising’. The generosity of everyone on the evening ensured that over £2000 was raised and thanks must go to everyone concerned. In Glasbury congratulations go to the Glasbury Play Park team for all their hard work in organising the Annual Duck Race and BBQ on the Bont. This year, Hay Fire-fighters were the joint charity and the lads gave a demonstration on the river as part of the proceedings with a great afternoon being had by all. It was with great sadness that the Painscastle Fete was cancelled this year. Our community had seen
the passing of two popular local residents in quick succession and it was quite rightly felt that it was inappropriate to hold this year’s event. Our sympathies go to the families concerned and to the community for their loss. Local issues have been dominated by the decision of Powys County Councils Cabinet to either hand over the running of the Glasbury Public Conveniences to the Community Council or to close them. Discussions are now ongoing so watch this space. I had the pleasure of chairing a public meeting in Glasbury to discuss the future of The Maesllwch Inn. Over 40 residents attended to see the plans and to ask questions to the new owners. Overwhelming support for this project was given on the evening and we can all look forward to its refurbishment and its reopening at Christmas. Please don’t forget that should you wish to contact me please do so on either of the following 07855 752110 or cllr.chris.davies@powys.gov.uk Best wishes, Chris

After what seems years of continuous campaigning we seem to have a lull. This means that The League can get back to its main aims and objectives, which are to raise money to provide amenities to improve patient care. We would like to thank a number of people that have helped us. Firstly we would like to thank all of you who have given donations. Among the items we have bought over the last two years are another high/low bed and a new Ice Flaker machine for physio. This is an important piece of equipment to help aid patient recovery. Both these items were around £3000 each. We bought a reclining chair and await delivery of another two. We have also bought new bedside tables and foot rests as well as many smaller items for the ward and Day Hospital. We have paid for a better TV Ariel and we have just bought a DVD player for the Day Hospital. All
patients receive a present from us at Christmas and Easter Eggs at Easter. With the help of the Barnes Project in Talgarth and supported by some volunteers, we have been able to reintroduce the trolley round three days a week for the wards and the Day Hospital. Our thanks to Bronllys Garage for providing papers on sale or return and to Boughrood Stores who keep us well supplied with sweets and chocolates at a competitive price, as well as going out of their way to provide requested items. We should also like to thank Mrs Summerfield from Talgarth for providing this service for many a year. Please support our Autumn Fair on Saturday November 9th 2pm - 4pm Talgarth Church Hall and THANK YOU AGAIN Maggie Sims Chair of Bronllys & Community League of Friends Bronllys Hospital, Bronllys.

I know it’s only October, but when it comes to the Christmas Works Party it’s only right that the event is planned well so a good time is had by all. Maybe I’m wrong, but my team work extremely hard all year round - it’s my duty as ‘the Boss’ to give them a fantastic night out. Last year ended with full tummies and empty wine bottles! Clare, has been in contact with some local establishments and they have got themselves organised for the season ahead and await any enquiries you may have. A great variety, something to take everyones fancy. Remember that a Christmas Party doesn’t just have to be for local companies, it’s a great excuse to get the family all together in one place with great food and fantastic times.

Shop Locally this Christmas
Christmas shopping is usually a stressful experience but it really doesn’t need to be. Why not start your Christmas list locally, right here on your doorstep in the towns of Hay and Talgarth? I think you’d be genuinely surprised on what and who you could buy for. Many of the local shops offer very competitive prices, not just competing with shops further afield but also with internet prices. Plus many of the shops offer unique gifts that you just won’t find elsewhere. To make it stress free, break up the shopping trip with some tea and cake in a local cafe, or end the day with food and beverage in a local restaurant. Going local means no fuel costs, bumping into familiar faces and keeping your hard earned dosh within the community.

My love of flowers stems from my parents. My mother always has fresh flowers in the house, and my Father is an award winning gardener. My mother would have loved a flower shop of her own but bringing up a family took priority. To create something beautiful in your home you don’t need to spend a lot. Flowers will bring a smile to your face every day. Sometimes a few stems of Clematis in a small vase is all you need; a Hydrangea head or a few beautiful Peonies. I was originally inspired by Sarah Raven and Jane Packer, but now with so many good florists out there, I draw my inspiration from Nikki Tibbles, Blue Carrot and Studio Choo. I have worked for a florist in Windsor and have studied in Usk for the last few years. I think my Art school background has contributed to my ability to combine colours and textures in my floral work. Please come and visit the shop and see the selection of beautiful flowers, plants, gifts and cards. Fashion News!
Autumn / Winter 2013’s overriding mood for the new season is that of elegance, grace and femininity with a mix of darker, tougher prints and fabrics. Taking a softer approach to the new season, pink makes the prettiest addition to any winter wardrobe.Team with soft greys and chocolates for a more sophisticated look or pair with black for a little more edge. You will find this season pinks mainly in Outwear: M&S, Next and Zara on the high street have the best selection. In Hay head to Number 2 for deeper, stronger pinks. Autumn/Winter is a paean to elegance and sophistication creating fabulous womanly silhouettes which from a personal stylist perspective is fantastic news! It boosts the hourglass curves and pulls us in and gives us a waist, hurrah! Create the look with skirts that flare out over rounded hips, longer lengths and pleats. Number 2 and Focus are greater for the longer lengths and pleats or Flow for slightly less length. Or why not embrace this season’s plaid love affair and invest in Tartan. Be money savvy and make it a tartan skirt! I will be opting for a more vintage style, Kelly at VintageTramp has a great selection. Look out for her at Hay Does Vintage events. Florals are still blooming too, although they have transitioned into darker prints scattered across blackened silks and chiffons. On Hay high street florals are in abundance, go for burnt oranges, blacks and reds to update your wardrobe. Great Plains at Focus and Joules at Number 2 are my favourites. On the opposite side of the season the animal print is still creating a stir, tone it down and wear it in your accessories. Clarks have great handbags, brogues and loafers with a splash of animal print. Golesworthy’s have an excellent range of Clarks. Adelas and La Maison will never fail for great animal print accessories too. Not to forget you boys! It’s time for you to push fashion forward this season with coloured trousers in blood orange, rust, burgundy, green and purple. For the less adventurous, go for cobalt blue, cerulean and frosted blues. White Stuff and Carhartt found in Flow is a good starting point. Trousers are more relaxed in their cut with better material varieties, great to keep you warm. Try Barbours Moleskins in Purple from Golesworthy’s. If your style is more mellow opt for tonal dressing, where your clothes are all varying shades of the same base colour. This look is fantastically demure in the Herefordshire countryside.. News from Gwernyfed High School Farmers son off to Cambridge There were a lot of happy students at Gwernyfed as pupils came in on 15th August to collect their A Level results. Particularly as all those who wished to go to college or university achieved places. Head Boy, David Jones, of Caeronen Farm Three Cocks achieved A* in English and Geography, an A grade in Physics and the Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced Qualification. He is going to St John’s College Cambridge to read Law. ‘I am thrilled to finally open these results, and cannot wait to start at Cambridge’ said David. Thomas Scruby from Llanfihangel was also thrilled to be going to Durham University to read Physics having achieved an A* in the subject. He commented ‘It has been a huge relief to receive
the results, and now my place at Durham is confirmed I’m looking forward to going’. Other successful students were Maddie Flemming who will be studying English and Drama at UWIC having gained an A* in English; and Shaun Commee who is to read Economics at UWE Bristol. Additionally students will be starting at Cardiff, Liverpool and Swansea Universities as well as other places of study. Some are planning a ‘gap’ year, whilst others start management trainee schemes. Headteacher John Williams was delighted for all the Year 13 students. ‘The year group has worked tirelessly for the last seven years, contributing hugely to school life. We are pleased the average point score has increased, showing rising standards. All the staff at Gwernyfed wish the young people well for the future’

News from Threading Notions
We have moved to a new venue. Due to the proposed closure of our meeting place, Hay community hall, we recently moved the group to Cusop village hall, which is just around the corner. This has proved to be a lovely venue with excellent facilities. Apart from our weekly meetings, a stitching workshop at one of our Member’s homes was enjoyed by some of the the group. Also some members visited the textile museum in Hereford, which is well worth a visit. We shall be having a stall at the Black Mountains Festival in Talgarth to promote the group. We continue to meet on most Tuesdays from 2-4 p.m. and some stay on until 5p.m. Our group continues as a small informal craft group with no leader, where members bring along whatever is their interest, to do whilst they have a chat and coffee. Currently the members interests are spinning, knitting, beading, cross stitch, patch work, rag rugging, etc. - and lots of chatting and laughter! New members will receive a warm and friendly welcome.Anyone interested can phone Pam Taylor on 01874754492 for more details. We also have a facebook page.

Top 5 Interior Design Tips
1. When replanning a space, look at all the elements including lighting, furnishings, colour and flooring. Think about the functionality of the room, and look at the proportions. Only by analysing all these different aspects can you best plan how to achieve your dream space. 2. Be bold in your design wish list and don’t be afraid of introducing your own personality. If you love the colour teal, use this in curtains, cushions or in a painting and warm up the room with contrasting orange accessories. If you love geometrics and have a plain featureless bedroom, create a feature wall and use the main colour in other areas around the room. E.g. if the main colour of wallpaper is red, then keep the remaining walls neutral to highlight the punchy red and look at fitting red draw pulls in the wardrobe or dresser to link it all in.

3. Budget wisely before starting your research and design and price up each aspect of your new space. If you find a “must have” piece e.g. a statement light, then review the other items and see where you can save. 4. Upscale where you can – scour your old bric-abrac for pieces you can repaint, restore or recover. These sorts of creative projects will add character to your home. Also, if buying furniture new, don’t slavishly follow the latest trend – choose quality pieces that will last but can be integrated into future colour or design schemes in the future. 5. Play with texture, pattern and colours and add ambience within a space by using different fabrics, colours and finishes. Soften a dark hardwood floor with a tactile light wool rug, mix silk cushions with wool throws on an iron bed.

Local Talent: Emeline Lawford Artist Name? Emeline Lawford Type of Artist? Singer/Songwriter and Guitarist Range of Products? I am currently performing gigs in and around Bristol and Powys, I have many future plans and one of them is to offer digital recordings online (through Soundcloud, Facebook etc.) and physical copies (CDs etc.) How long have you been an artist? It’s always been a hobby and it started to come together when I began to teach myself guitar to accompany my singing when I was 15, and I’m so glad I did… Where did you train or gain experience? I taught myself everything I know, I gained my confidence from the regular positive feedback from my many open mic night appearances and when I have performed at successful gigs. I have also participated in busking on the streets (it’s always a laugh when drunk women start dancing and singing in the street), this is very challenging as I am opening myself up to the opinion of the public, and without my own PA I have to push myself so much harder than on stage and I found my voice is pretty exhausted after just a few hours, but it’s always worth it to see the odd person skipping along or expressing their enjoyment What has been your proudest moment? I look back to when my confidence began to form and remember a key moment; a couple of years ago I had never felt comfortable enough to play in front of people, for about a year of learning and practicing I had gone unheard and experienced no feedback, it was a hobby that I did for myself rather than to entertain others and it was only during the Fringe Festival in Brecon that I was persuaded to play at an Open Mic night at The Market Tavern. As it was during the festival, the pub was heaving - it’s still one of the busiest Open Mic nights I’ve played at to this day. It took all my courage to play to all those people, but when I started singing the rather noisy room rapidly fell silent and I watched the audience engage with me. As my performance was followed by encouraging comments, that pushed me to practice harder and play more often What would you class as your Masterpiece? I have written a few original songs, but I would consider
my most inspired is a cover that I made my own, I don’t like to impersonate artists but I love experiencing their compositions through my own musical style. The song I am talking about in this case is ‘Kisses’ by ‘Daughter’, and it can be found on my Facebook page Have you any future plans for your work? I have a few gigs around Bristol and the odd spontaneous open mic night. I also hope to obtain some gigs in other parts of the UK What advice would you give a local artist? Accept as many opportunities as possible, Play songs/ styles you are unsure of at Open Mics and ask for feedback. Don’t let a dud gig bring you down – it happens to all artists. Don’t be afraid to promote yourself and make many musical friends!
SMITH BUILDERS LTD The future of construction
Combining traditional building with the innovation of new sustainable technologies...
What other local artists do you admire? I have heard brilliant musicians at many Open Mic nights; they are great for free laid back entertainment. I have made some good friends and connections Where can your products be purchased? I perform live and have many upcoming gig opportunities I am very excited about. Here we are coming rapidly into autumn with the threats of bad weather and so on. But look at what we have got! The crops of fruit are wonderful although a bit late. Saying that I should qualify it as fifty and more years ago we always went on holiday at the end of August and into September - never late enough for blackberry picking and when we got home the apples and pears were still firmly on the trees. I think over recent years we have got used to somewhat earlier springs and thus earlier autumn crops. This year the local gardens have done very well and we have had lots of good things amongst them being a long variety of beetroot which is very good, both Reeves and Victoria plums, plenty greengages and damsons and a wide variety of apples which will continue for a long while yet as each type comes ready. Commercial British vegetables are wandering about a bit in price at the moment. Cauliflower and broccoli having hit ridiculous heights came back to normal and then this week shot up again due to a slight scarcity caused by cold nights slowing the growth. Cabbage is not the most exiting vegetable but is dirt cheap at the moment and with different varieties and a little help from the recipe books (or if I become modern, then from Google) many good meals can be had at minimal expense. At the time of writing the runner beans are still cropping well and I would venture to suggest that these later ones are plumper and less stringy than the early ones. Plenty around for chutney or the old fashioned preserving method of salting them down. I mention preserving. This was done universally when I was a boy and before. It is only the freezer that made life easier and cut out bottling, pickle and chutney making etc. Strictly, for the sake of the environment and our electric bills we should do more bottling in whatever form and stop running so many deep freezes. It would also give more variety to our meals. Cold meat is far nicer with piccallilli than boiled cauliflower and courgettes. Next week I am having a few days off and hope to see something interesting that I can tell you about next month.

I’ve got some good news. James and me entered some home produce into Clifford Show last month: we won first prize for our soft fruit; third for Dolly’s eggs (that’s our pet chicken if you aren’t a regular reader); and we lost out on the heaviest marrow to some much bigger ones. It was great fun entering. We had some shiny coins that are now in our piggy banks. I love pigs, our neighbours have pet pigs ... We’ve just come back from a trip to London. We went on a tube. People don’t smile much on the tube do they? ... or wave? I did make some people smile though - I did a pig noise. I am having so much fun at nursery. My week is getting very busy so I may not be able to do a column every month. Mummy has asked me to go bi-monthly, I don’t really know what that means. She says that people like my column so I must keep up the good work! So see you in a couple of months folks!

Listed Buildings Owners of listed buildings are obliged to maintain them, as in effect they are being held in trust for us all. When alterations are undertaken special care needs to be taken and prior consent has to be applied for and be granted by the local authority. It is often thought that listed buildings cannot be changed or extended and have to remain unaltered, but that is simply not the case. Provided a building is treated with respect it is often possible to extend it.

For example, the owners of a Grade II listed farmhouse near Hay-on-Wye needed more space for a growing family. A substantial two-storey extension, together with a connecting link, was designed with great care. Consent was granted by the Brecon Beacons National Park Authority and CADW. Its walls are limewashed stone, and details and proportions echo the existing building. The new extension contains two bathrooms and a utility room, and this has allowed modern services to be removed from the original, historically important part of the house. With over 30 years of experience Nicholas Keeble Associates’ current projects include works to Grade II* and II buildings in Whitney-on-Wye, Hay-onWye, Llanelian-yn-Rhos and Brecon. The practice is equally happy working on unlisted houses and barn conversions, which receive the same respect as listed structures.

Wild Weekend October 19th sees a coup for the Festival of British Cinema.
DO YOU NEED YOUR SEPTIC TANK EMPTYING
The director, David Bond, is coming to a screening of his acclaimed documentary PROJECT WILD and to discuss the Wild Network, a movement to get kids reconnecting with nature. The film will be shown at Talgarth Town Hall at 8pm..
Jetting • CCTV Camera Surveying • Repairs • Tank Emptying
Among other startling facts about our children’s lives the film reveals that the time children spend playing out of doors has decreased by 50% in one generation. The National Trust, RSPB, Green Lions and Play Wales are among the organisations working together to change this and PROJECT WILD in a funny and polemical way convinces as to why it is necessary to have the campaign.
Give us a call on 01874 622215 or 07850 269305
2014 Calendar Available NOW in local outlets rrp £6.50
All photographs taken in our local area of the Brecon Beacons - makes the perfect gift!
The film is released nationwide in Picture House Cinemas on October 25th so we are lucky to have it a week early. The Festival of British Cinema is showing the film FREE at Talgarth Town Hall. We are showing it free because we think it is important for our children’s futures to convince as many adults as possible that their kids should swop screen time [I pads, phones, TV,] for wild time. Also at 3pm on Saturday 19th there will be wild activities for children, accompanied by a parent, a screening of a short film made by the Wild Wye Web Media group and early evening pizzas at The Bakers Table, Talgarth Mill. So have a wild weekend and be sure to get your film tickets early, it should be a popular event: Tickets from: Talgarth: The Bakers Table , Talgarth Mill. News from Cartref

We have been treated to a lovely summer and we have all really enjoyed spending time out in the sun. Recently we enjoyed a trip to Wyevale Garden Centre in Hereford which was lovely. Work has been started on our courtyard garden which we are aiming to have ready for next Spring. We also recently had a Macmillan Tea/ Coffee morning which was enjoyed by all. Coming Up: Our residents have recently decided that we are going to have Christmas lunch at Three Cocks Garden Centre as they enjoyed it so much last year. We are also going to have a pink themed day for Breast cancer Awareness in October with staff and residents invited to dress in pink to raise a little for charity. Thinking ahead we are inviting local choirs and entertainers who would like to come and entertain our residents in the run up to Christmas to get in contact with us on 01497 820621.

Perfect Body? Do you know that the average woman weighs themselves 6000 times over their lifetime? It’s not a bad thing necessarily – if this helps you to keep on track but I’ve honestly had women at the Club who weigh 5 times a day! This may seem excessive (and it is), and unnecessary (ditto!) but to the women who monitor themselves this way it’s essential to them. Some Personal Trainers and others in the Health Industry, as well as images in the press do NOT help here either – aspiring to perfectly toned, skinny bodies as the ideal to which we should all aim, adding to this pressure to look like models. Are you still trying to aim for the ‘perfect’ body? … If we all ate and exercised the same, (optimally), and meditated every day (in other words, stressed less) for 5 years: WE’D STILL ALL LOOK DIFFERENT! Many can verify I’ve said this for YEARS, and it may seem controversial to you but stop it now! Aim to be the best you can and that’s good enough! Although the often offered solution ‘eat less, exercise more’ is not as simple as it sounds - it’s not that far out either, and with a little pertinent advise
on the most effective workouts (NOT long endurance marathons they can have the opposite effect), and optimal nutrition (this doesn’t have to be rocket science), then addressing stress levels and definitely getting enough sleep - if you can stick to it all (this needs another article!), you’ll ‘land’ in the place you deserve to be. I don’t care what ‘dress size’ this is as long as you feel great, glow, have energy and feel good about yourself. The ladies who are the healthiest at the Club (strong, eating well, cardio fit) are often NOT ‘little skinnies’ but can often out-pace most, and feel great. Sometimes they just need to be reminded that this is ALL they need and if have the confidence to drop any residual body issues – they are FABULOUS as they are! Next month: ‘Cat Fit” is now a Dreading the sub-company of G&T’s Menopause? Help is hence new logo! at hand. Golden tips! Article supplied by Cat Lawford, Personal Trainer. Weight Loss Expert. Hypopresive Practitioner. Fitness Instructor of the year 2006 (Wales). Hypnotherapist. Life Coach. Prop: Gym &Tonic Health Club, Hay. Serving Hay in Health & Fitness since 1997. Hay Theatre CIC introduces A New Reminiscence Theatre Project“Reflections” For over 65s. I don’t make New Year Resolutions as I can never keep them, but I do have a gamble and say, “ hmm this year is the year of…” and I find a theme relevant to my life at that moment. 2013 has been for me, The Year of the Open Book, in other words, I didn’t have a clue what would happen and I was open as to which direction it would go. It has become very exciting, not only do I have my new theatre company based at The Globe, my favourite artistic space in Hay, but after much work indoors during the wonderful heat wave in July, finished grant applications to proceed with a project working with the more senior members of our local community of retirement age.
Reflections is a project which will result in a new play based on the stories of the people of Hay and surrounding areas. The play will be performed in October 2014 by an intergenerational cast. Now I need the stories, it is indeed an “open book”, who knows what tales you will bring. If you want to perform too, great, if not, just come and chat. It will be A Living Scrapbook, once opened community performers will bring it to life. Thank you Arts Council Wales and Elmley Small Grants Arts Fund who have said “YES” and I just love people who say “YES”.The reminiscence workshops therefore are free, Friday afternoons starting 18th Oct. Say “YES” and be there for page 1. Janine Sharp Telephone: 07733 055430

Set on a remote northern farm, Twelve Miles from Nowhere is a moving and compelling account of what happens when a vulnerable, isolated family let an engaging young stranger into their lives. see a way forward. The farm is dilapidated and going under….. then Craig turns up with enough charisma and ambition to charm the birds from the trees. But is he really the answer to their dreams? Merging the aspirations found in Steinbeck’s ‘Of Mice And Men’ with the northern sharpness and humour of Barry Hines’ ‘Kes’, this stunning new play about life on the edge is set against a surprisingly gritty rural backdrop.
