As per my plea in last months issue, Spring is here and the sun is out. Welcome to our April issue. This month we’re introducing a couple of new features. It has been known for some time that our readers often pick up our sister publication, the Local Beacon magazine. With Brecon only a short distance away, articles, events and advertisers will often appeal to the residents of Hay, Talgarth and the surrounding villages. From now on we aim to share with you some highlights that will appear in the Local Beacon with the hope that it entices you to take a look online, that’s if of course you are unable to collect a hardcopy version from the Brecon area. Please turn to page 2 for more information. The next new feature is a slight change to our normal recipe page. This month, and hopefully in future months, a local restaurant or café will provide us with a tasty recipe. Our first one sounds delicious, a little time consuming but I think it will be worth it! If you are a local restaurant or café and would like to submit a recipe, please do get in touch. Last year a friend and myself started the all ladies netball team, Gwernyfed Geckos. We play in the Radnor & District League, starting out in the summer league and now currently in the winter league. At the end of the season, mid May, I will be sure to include our results. As we go to print we have won 9 out of 12 games. In the meantime we are calling out to any local ladies that enjoy netball. You may not have played since High School but that really doesn’t matter. Our current players range from 14 year olds to 50+ all with a varied knowledge of the rules. Our aim as a Club is to enter two teams into this years summer league, so please do give me a tinkle for more information. Come join team Geckos! Earlier this month, I was hugely touched by a handwritten poem sent in the post. The author of this poem is only 11 years old. I have no doubt in my mind she will achieve great things in life. She was not asked to do this, she simply did it out of kindness. Turn to page 15 to read it for yourself. Enjoy our April issue with a glass of Sauvignon Blanc! Lisa Marie x

As I sign off this month’s Wye Local column, we are having a taste of early spring sunshine which, combined with a keen wind, has served to dry out the fields waterlogged for much of this winter. It is glorious to see early lambs skipping about in the fields around Talgarth, with the sun on their backs. At the same time, Christians across the globe are marking the season of Lent, culminating next month in the festival of Easter. Incredibly a whole year has passed since the newly elected Pope Francis and Archbishop Justin Welby first stepped up to face the challenges ahead, in the Vatican, the See of Canterbury and the wider world. Both seem to have had a genuinely positive impact during the past year - which is welcome in these dangerous and turbulent times. Last month, I reflected on the impact of the Welsh Local Government Settlement on us here in Powys. The outcome is now becoming increasingly clear, as the County Council has agreed its 2014/15 budget. Inevitably unpalatable proposals involving greater pressure on education and social services budgets have been included. There is also to be a phased withdrawal by the County Council from managing sports, leisure facilities and playing fields - and I have already attended meetings involving Talgarth FC and fellow town councillors to explore a partnership approach to safeguard these local facilities for the future. This is just one area where there will be higher expectations of town and community councils to adopt responsibility for local services and assets. However, thanks to the concerted campaign of both Welsh Liberal Democrat & Labour Councillors, together with opposition Independents, plans to abolish all specialist ALN centres in the county have been removed from the budget and draconian cuts of 50% to CAB and other advice centres in Powys have been radically scaled back to 15%, accompanied

by a review. The Council Tax increase for 2014/15 is 4.5% equating to an approximate 85p rise per week for a Band D property in Talgarth. We would dearly have wished to secure a lower increase - but the County Council payroll is already due to fall by some 400 full time equivalent posts in the coming year, as we face some £20,000,000 of budget cuts over 3 years. These challenging times give us cause to celebrate the warmth and diversity of our town more than ever, especially the readiness of individuals to volunteer for the good of fellow residents. In recent weeks, both Gwernyfed RFC and Talgarth FC have been able to catch up on some of the many fixtures that fell victim to the weather earlier in the winter. I was delighted to hear Talgarth FC Juniors being cited recently in the Brecon and Radnor Sports Awards 2014. We should always recall the commitment of coaches, referees, those who look after the kit and feed the teams – all making a genuine contribution to sport in our community. In this connection, Talgarth Bowling Club is holding an open day on Saturday, 12th April from 2:00pm so that locals can discover what’s on offer and try their hand at the sport. If interested, please call Malcolm Dodds on (01874) 712374 or Peter Johnson on (01874) 712233 for more information. In the meantime, please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any feedback or issues of concern on 07703 112113 or by email: william.powell@ wales.gov.uk Alternatively, you can come to my next advice surgery on Friday, 4th April from 5:00pm at Talgarth Tourist Information & Resource Centre. Happy Easter William

News from Glasbury Ward by Chris Davies Powys County Councillor for Glasbury The last month has been dominated by events at County Hall relating to the budget and the increase in Council Tax. With Powys having received the worst funding settlement for the 6th consecutive year £20 million pounds had to be removed from the budget. Very difficult decisions are now being made that will affect us all. My Conservative Group colleagues and I were the only members to put forward an alternative budget which we felt would be deliverable and better for the people of Powys. This including a much reduced council tax increase, but unfortunately this was not supported by other groups which is a pity. The recent wet weather caused a small landslip on the Cwmbach to Ffynnonn Gynnydd Road. Many who know this road will be aware that there is a very steep bank leading down to the stream below. The Council’s design team are working hard to devise a suitable remedy and costings to ensure that this road will be repaired and back open as soon as

possible. Damage is also being caused to the river banks in Glasbury and discussions are about to take place with the Environment Agency to see what can be done to avoid further erosion. On a much happier note, well done to all involved in the Breconshire and the Radnorshire Y.F.C Entertainment finals. These young club members were amazing and they are all a great asset to our communities – well done! It’s hard to believe that by the time you are reading this Spring will be in full swing and lambs will be filling the local fields. Let’s hope we can look forward to some better weather and may I take this opportunity of wishing you all a very happy Easter. Chris Please don’t forget that should you wish to contact me on any matter please do not hesitate on either of the following: 07855 752110 or cllr.chris.davies@ powys.gov.uk

SMITH BUILDERS LTD The future of construction

Easter 2014

Combining traditional building with the innovation of new sustainable technologies...

Saturday 19th April in the Buttermarket

Plant of the month: Rhododendrons & Azaleas This group of plants is a very large one indeed and includes some of the most breathtakingly beautiful of all ornamental plants. They range from large trees to tiny prostrate mats; most are evergreen but others lose their leaves in Autumn and produce fiery displays of colour; and their flowers range in colour through almost the entire spectrum with some of the most brilliant hues occurring in the Azaleas.

• New Builds • Extensions • Barn Conversions • Renovation • Commercial Contracting M: 07815 089213 : 07875 701226 T: 01544 327169 E: info@smithbuildersltd.co.uk W: www.smithbuildersltd.co.uk Brick Cottage Winforton Hereford HR3 6EB

The larger Rhododendron require space and are most at home on the edge of woodland but there are many medium and dwarf varieties which are suitable for smaller gardens. Evergreen Azaleas and dwarf Rhododendrons work particularly well in pots and troughs especially when the garden soil is not suitable for them. All varieties require an acidic soil to thrive or need to be grown in Ericaceous (lime free) compost and benefit greatly from an annual mulch or organic matter. Generally speaking larger Rhododendrons do best in partial shade but dwarf varieties and Azaleas prefer a more open aspect as long as they are not allowed to become too dry. Rhododendrons and Azaleas combine well with other acid lovers such as Pieris and Camellias and can be under planted with spring flowering bulbs for even more early season Colour. This will be the fourth year that Artisans at Hay have exhibited in the Buttermarket, and they are still going strong! There are always a few new faces at each event, and Saturday 19th April from 9.00am – 5.00pm will be just as exciting. Beryl Morgans, glass artist brings beautiful work made by her strip cut glass and crucible melting process, and will be delighted to explain how this works. Josephine Harvey, ceramic artist makes small scale slip cast vessels in porcelain with a delightful decorative relief. Jan Knibbs is a textile artist working with a fabulous colour palette and amazing embroidery skills to create wearable works of art. Peter King, artist blacksmith has created sculptures for many gardens including Hampton Court Palace and RHS shows and will have some real statement pieces on show. Jenny Pearce, basket maker will present some of her many functional and decorative hand-made willow baskets. Wood at Golden Valley have a huge range of hand-turned bowls, pegrails, chopping boards and other decorative items for the home. You can expect some Easter and Spring –inspired work at this show and surely some sunshine!

Home Juicing is the way forward This year is flying isn’t it? At G&T’s we’re already on week 3 of my live “Weight & See” course and we’re seriously rocking it! Last week I made them a beautiful bright green juice they thought was kiwi – it was in fact spinach, apples, banana and lime juice, and mind-blowingly good for you! Home juicing will open up a world of different tastes and textures for your palette. It is a fantastic way to get a huge hit of vitamins, minerals and enzymes, in just a few gulps. Enzymes found in raw foods are protein molecules which: Digest our foods, destroy toxins, break down fats and cellulose, and metabolise starches and proteins There are 2,500 different enzymes in the human body. They’re the catalysts that make metabolism happen. If we have low enzyme activity this can lead to problems such as: being less able to work at our peak, less able to fight illness and repair injured cells, and less able to renew, defend and support our systems. You may have: Intestinal problems, mal-absorption, heartburn, burping, flatulence, bloating, ‘fuzzy’ headedness, and lethargy. Low enzyme activity is one of the most prevalent

problems in Western society today; the implications of our fast living, fast food approach cannot be underestimated and juicing can help redress this balance, using fruit and especially vegetable and is obviously superior to the powdered green drinks and supplements available. It’s a creative way to get goodness into your kids too, and they love to help – it’s fun to do (albeit a bit messy!), AND they’ll be more likely to drink what they’ve made! Fresh juice is very different to shop bought. Shop juice may have sat in a carton for weeks before you taste it, losing a lot of its goodness. Your homemade version will be sweeter, creamier, FRESH and have far more variety than shop bought. You’re adding to your daily water intake, as fruit and veg have tons of pure, naturefiltered water in them. Some people even swear they get a ‘high’ from home made juice! If you’d like the full version of this article as well as lots of juice recipes from my recipe book FREE please e-mail: cat@gymandtonichay.co.uk and you SHALL receive! The Thoughts of a Greengrocer Sitting here with the sun shining I am thinking how lucky we have been this winter with the weather. For us the journey to either Birmingham or Bristol in the early hours of the morning is critical and this year we have not had one day when snow or ice has hampered us. This warmer weather has also had a good effect on the vegetables there being no shortages of British produce and thus prices have been kept sensible. Thinking of prices I cannot ignore the forthcoming war between the supermarkets. Initially it will seem as if this is a help to the consumer as prices will appear to drop (but watch for sleight of hand). Long term it is not unlikely that one of the middle market supermarkets could be driven out and then those remaining will very quickly get the prices back up and higher - they will not let their profits fall for long as that would limit the boardroom bonuses. Recently I found some Pink Kiss apples which, as the name may indicate is an apple very similar to the Pink Lady. The new apple was almost as good for flavour and a lot cheaper but unfortunately they won’t keep and soon went off. Another attempt at keeping prices down ends in failure! With Easter being so late in the year there is a possibility that we could celebrate the holiday with English (even Wye Valley) asparagus. There has already been a little of the forced asparagus from the Chinn family of Ross-on-Wye in the market but I thought that £6 per bundle wholesale was really too much. At this time of year I usually remind you that if you know where to look the wild garlic, or more correctly, Ramsons is now showing and should be good this year as it likes to be well wetted over winter - and it has certainly been that! The other thing I would mention is to be careful of British apples and pears. They have now been in store all winter and once taken out they go soft very quickly and any bruising will rot the fruit straight away. The best thing is to buy just enough for one or two days and save wastage. Wishing you all a Happy Easter and restful holiday at the end of the month. Article supplied by Sturat Pritchard, Castle Greengrocers.

As summer visitors arrive to join the locals, more and more birds are singing now. The calls and songs of Nuthatches, including a shrill ‘peep-peep-peeppeep’ and a bubbling trill, ring out loud and clear. Take a walk along the Usk or the Canal, through Priory Groves or up Slwch Hill and you are likely to hear Nuthatches up in the trees. If you put out food for birds this one could rank high in the garden pecking order. The outsize bill is good for making holes, smashing nuts and tweezing out grubs; combined with the short tail it gives the bird a distinctive flight silhouette. With strong feet and curved claws Nuthatches can climb up and down trunks and branches, unlike the slightly-built Treecreepers which share the same trees but fly down when they reach the top. They are hole-nesters and have a neat trick of using mud to reduce the size of the entrance to keep out larger intruders. Cariad’s Column Spring is here and I have a spring in my step ... I love it when the sun shines. My favourite place in the whole wide world is our garden. I can chase Mia and Toby the kittens. I can sneak up on Dolly Parton & Gang. They are the chickens. And Otis and Redding the ducks make the funniest noises. In the evening I get to round them all up so Mr Fox doesn’t get them. I’m yet to meet Mr Fox but Daddy says he would like our feathered friends for his din dins. The kittens help me, then they come in the house with us. My favourite word at the moment is “Why”. Mummy and Daddy are not that fond of it. I use it a lot. Perhaps I should use another word like ... “Pam”. Mummy says I will learn Welsh at School. Next time I can tell you all about our holiday, we’re going on a air-plane.

Beautiful Beeswax Beeswax is a natural wax produced in the bee hive of honey bees. The wax is formed by worker bees, it is nearly white, but becomes progressively more yellow or brown by the incorporation of pollen oils and propolis. Bees collectively fly an estimated 150,000 miles, roughly six times around the earth, to yield one pound of beeswax. Beeswax candles are amazing! Not only is the pure beeswax a beautiful golden colour, it also has a cleansing effect on the air in your home. Beeswax is naturally scented. (I love the scent. It’s fresh and cleansing but not overpowering... a little bit like honey!) Also the candles do not drip. Beeswax goes into the lip-blams, gardener’s balm and body butters, as well as some of the soaps including honey and oat soap. Doing your bit for bees All bees need flowers and the pollen and nectar in them – there are native and non-native plants that attract bees but both wild flowers and garden flowers are good sources of food. 1) Choose those which provide pollen and nectar eg. apple blossom, mahonia or lavender. 2) Leave an area for wild flowers – poppies and corn marigolds. 3) Leave part of your lawn uncut and encourage clover. 4) Save the sunny areas for good bee plants like bellflower and foxglove. 5) If you have room, plant a drift of the same type of flower, as these are easier for bees to find. 6) Bees can’t reach pollen and nectar in double flowers – go for single or semi-double varieties. 7) Provide water for bees – a small pond, bird bath or other container. 8) Avoid using chemical sprays or at least use them selectively. 9) Encourage wildlife areas in your local community – churchyards, hedgerows, public plantings.

Pughs@Londis managers (and sisters) Debbie Davies and Ali Greenow said:

“We wanted to give something back to the local community, who support us so well, and giving to Dial-a-Ride seemed the best way to do it.”

Sew with confidence A course starting in April will open the door to those who’ve always wanted to sew with confidence but don’t know where to start. The founders of SEW, Emily Penrose and Melanie Newton, whose friendship has grown out of their love for fabric, want to share their passion for design and making with you. Both women learnt the art from their mothers and grandmothers. As a young child, Emily was given an old Singer sewing machine and began making quilted purses which she sold at a local shop. Melanie absorbed the skills from watching the ladies at her mother’s sewing class. As a teenager, this led to re-fashioning her grandfather’s silk pyjammas to wear to the pub. Emily is now better known as the owner of Hay Baby where she makes and sells her wonderful appliquéd and embroidered goods for children. Melanie’s interest took her to the London College

of Fashion to learn pattern cutting and couture tailoring. The five week course begins on 28th April at Cusop Village Hall. In each session, you will be taught the skills to complete a particular item. Over the weeks, these skills – and your confidence - will build, so that you’ll no longer feel scared of your sewing machine. You’ll learn about different fabrics, design, working with patterns and a range of decorative techniques. You’ll also learn how to upcycle old blankets and clothes; turning them into beautiful new things for you and your home. Along with this course, SEW is planning a series of day workshops and other courses, and are keen to hear from you with your ideas of things you’d like to learn to make. Please get in touch at: wyesew@gmail.com or call 07972 502087

small farms Organic and locally produced meat

Coffee Morning On 3rd of November 2013, two ladies were discussing the possibility of starting a coffee morning in the Royston Hall, Bronllys. They thought people these days prefer the TV in the evening, so morning coffee would be much more popular. Posters and flyers were printed and on the 20th November they had their first coffee morning in the Royston Hall. They have had one each Wednesday since (except Christmas day).

Easter is nearly here and we at Small Farms are gearing up to provide all your needs. We have sweet new Spring Lamb bought from our local market, provided by our wonderful local farmers. Our beef is from our farm, Lower Porthamel and is Organic Ruby red Devon, hung for at least 21 days. Dan from Erwood keeps us supplied with mouth watering Welsh free range Pork. We have our turkeys and chickens off Springfield and Packington, which are organic or free range. We also stock a small deli, with organic eggs, milk, butter, cheese and of course Trealy Farm charcuterie.

They are very popular with an average of 25 people each week and one or two fresh faces. So pop on along on a Wednesday between 10.30am - 12.00pm. A coffee or tea and home made cake all for ÂŁ1.00, refills included. All the proceeds go to the Hall, which needs a little TLC. The more use the Hall gets, the more help they will receive financially. This is run by the community for the community. Every one is welcome. Come and enjoy a natter with the neighbours.

Whatever your requirements we are sure we can provide it, so call in the shop to see us or telephone Tom, Stephen or Joyce 8 Broad Street, Hay-on-Wye, HR3 5DB

Glasbury

The sight of spring flowers in sunshine really lifts the spirit, and lets hope it will continue for our planned trips for the season ahead. We are off to Slimbridge Wildlife Trust in Gloucestershire this month. Last months indoor activities went as far as moving ourselves from one table to another playing Beetle Drive, which proved to be very social and amusing. We must do it again. Our next club meet at Glasbury village hall is on Wednesday 23rd April 2.30-4.30pm. We have Derek Price a local Historian who is our speaker and will present a Pot-pourri of Glasbury and surroundings, which I’m sure will make an enjoyable afternoon. Later tea and a raffle. Small donations for prizes always appreciated. NEW MEMBERS WELCOME. Members Annual subscription is £7. If you haven’t renewed yet it would be appreciated if you could soon. Plants needed for our fund raising Plant Sale in May. To be held in Glasbury Village Hall, 17th May, 1.30 - 4.30pm. Best Wishes Gloria Gray

Gwernyfed High School held their Annual Eisteddfod on Friday 21st February 2014. The Eisteddfod is a Welsh Festival of Literature, Music and Performance. The pupils all belong to one of the School Houses, Mynydd and Dyffryn, and they competed against each other throughout the day. Additionally there were competitions in many other departments such as Art and Science. There was even a competition for the staff! With a jam packed programme our judges Mr T Cronin, Revd. D Thomas, Mrs D. Hebb and Revd. I Charlesworth were certainly not disappointed. The morning programme saw Years 7 – 9 compete with musicians, recitations in English and Welsh; small sketches and plenty of singing.

News from Hay Castle Trust

Hay Castle is one of the last remaining unconserved castles in Wales. The first of many archaeological digs, funded by Cadw, was recently undertaken around the castle to help unearth the site’s history. Local volunteers worked in the pits alongside archaeologists from Clwyd-Powys Archaeological Trust. There will be more extensive archaeological exploration as the project progresses. The Hay Castle team is now bigger than ever, with over 20 volunteers having recently signed up to make things happen here. If you would like to get involved, please email info@haycastletrust.org or call 01497 820 079. This month Hay Castle welcomes the first ever Hay Spring Fair on Saturday 12th April, with entertainment, music, workshops, crafts, and great local food and ale. Clifford School will be back at Easter, to rid us of the dragons’ chocolate eggs that have secretly nested all over the castle. The Hay Bike Fest rolls in for the last weekend of April to transform the lawn into a hub of cyclemania. Next month we’re looking forward to Hay Festival 2014, with daily guided tours of the castle, the Groucho Club pop-up restaurant, outdoor street food fair, and Sally Matthews’ new site-specific sculptures. Watch out for the wolves.

News from The Village Quire

Rug Washing, Repair & Livery Services

January to March are usually fairly quiet months for the Village Quire, but not so this year! One blustery winter weekend in January, the quire and Phil Smith went into the studio to record our new show Precious Bane, based on the wonderful novel of that title by Mary Webb. This is our fourth CD under the label Genuine Folk, who specialise in recording traditional and folk music, and we are delighted to announce the CDs are now available for sale via our website www.villagequire.org.uk at a price of just £15 for a double CD. We are donating a £1 for each CD sold to a charity called Smile Train, who provide medical training to help repair children in developing countries who are born with a cleft palate. We’ve also had a lot of fun performing the show during March. The Village Quire March madness tour began with a performance at Marton Village Hall (Shropshire) on March 1st, closely followed by another Shropshire venue, Clun Village Hall, on March 8th. On Saturday 15th we set off across the Herefordshire potholes in our bumpy charabanc (tour minibus) over to Colwall Village Hall, near Malvern, to perform a fundraising concert for another charity, this time Concern Universal, who are a well established emergency and relief organisation. We finished the month nearer to home with a concert at The Globe in Hay on Friday March 28th. During the month we performed to some wonderful audiences, were delighted with all the hard work put in by our village hall hosts, and met many new friends – as well as one or two regular VQ followers. April should quieten down a little, where we will be focussing on recording our Christmas 2013 show, We Know by the Stars, which should be available for sale by the end of the month. To find out more please visit the Quire’s website www.villagequire.org.uk

We offer a fast, friendly, efficient and reliable rug washing and repair service.
