News from Talgarth by Cllr.William Powell Powys County Councillor for Talgarth The past month will certainly be etched in our memory for some time for its record breaking temperatures and glorious sunshine. Although the Mediterranean heat has proved testing for some - and had tragic consequences recently on the Brecon Beacons - it has at least allowed farmers to make real progress with their harvest. This is a blessing after the last few disappointing summers - and the endurance test of the past winter and spring. And just as flour sales at Talgarth Mill are exceeding all expectations, milling has had to be radically scaled back due to water levels in the Enig. As ever, the impact of the elements on our lives should not be underestimated.
School’s Summer Fayre back in June and the club itself could well prove equally popular, especially with the flexibility it will offer to working parents beyond school hours. The club, which has the backing of Mrs Ydwena Jones the Headteacher and the School Governors, is to be launched on 3rd September.
Our schools have only recently broken up for the summer holidays, but nevertheless the shops will soon be running their ‘back to school’ promotions, as mums and dads plan ahead for the new term. Meanwhile, here in Talgarth, we have three positive developments to report, that will be of interest to current and future parents. Firstly, it is great to hear that, following the disruption caused by the closure of the Talgarth Youth and Community Centre and after months of hard work and considerable bureaucracy, Mrs Martin has secured CSSIW registration for her early years setting, in its new location, the hut at Talgarth School. It will be reopening full time from September, accepting boys and girls from the age of two until Reception. Mrs Martin is looking forward to returning to ‘business as usual’ and would like to thank everyone who has supported her and her team in the interim period. Another piece of positive news for the autumn is the launch of Talgarth Tigers, an out of school club at Talgarth School. It will operate weekdays from 3:30 until 5:30 and is being run by two Talgarth mums Beryl Pritchard and Tracey Montgomery. The name Talgarth Tigers was the runaway winner in a poll run at the
The final development I wanted to mention relates to Talgarth’s new primary school. Following recent meetings of the Brecon Beacons National Park Authority, the proposed new school site on Hay Road has been incorporated into the emerging Local Development Plan (LDP) alongside some housing allocation. This is a major step forward in securing the school site and is to be welcomed. The LDP also provides for the mixed redevelopment of the former Mid Wales Hospital site, including a significant housing component, all subject to a development brief, which will provide for extensive consultation with the local community. I hope to see many of you out and about at local events in the coming weeks. I am especially looking forward to this year’s Talgarth Festival of the Black Mountains, which is as always on the August Bank Holiday weekend. In the meantime, please feel free to contact me if you have any feedback or issues of concern on 07703 112113 or by email: william.powell@ wales.gov.uk Alternatively, please come along to my next advice surgery on Friday, 2nd August from 5:00pm at Talgarth TiRC. Appointments are not needed – but advanced notice can be helpful, if the issues are complex. You can also pop into the TiRC at any time to request a call on any issue of concern to you. Best wishes William

Hay-on-Wye follows Europe & USA In setting up first death café
Over Coffee and Cake, Talk of Death These are not grief support groups or end-of-life planning sessions, but rather casual forums for people who want to discuss philosophical thoughts. Café society in the age of the age of meet up. In Europe, there’s a tradition of meeting in informal ways to discuss ideas – the café philosophique, the café scientifique. A ‘café mortel’ movement that began in Europe. A space where people can discuss death and find meaning and reflect on what’s important and ask profound questions. Meetings are confidential and not profit. People must respect one another’s beliefs and avoid proselytizing. And tea and cake play an important role. Cake normalizes things.
The facilitator will be Mollie Lord B.A. RMN/RGN (Diploma in Mental Health) University of London
The date for the 1st Death Cafe is 13/10/2013 The venue is: The Globe At Hay The time: 6pm

News from Glasbury Ward by Chris Davies Powys County Councillor for Glasbury At the time of going to print, we are all enjoying a true British Summer, the likes of which we have not seen for many years. I am hoping that it continues and the glorious sunshine is ensuring that our farmers are able to bring in the hay in double quick time. The local agricultural, village and community shows are now in full swing. If you haven’t ever been to one do look out for a notice or advert and try to attend, there will be something for everyone and it is a great way of getting involved and supporting your local community. I hope to see many of you over the next couple of months. I had the great pleasure of accepting an invitation to act as auctioneer at two fundraisers on the 13th of July. The first was St Meiligs Church, Lowes at Glasbury Village Hall, where I had over 170 lots to auction. There was a huge range of things on offer from garden clippers to a rather large toy horse (which I ended up taking home much to the delight of my daughters). Then it was off to Hay
Football Club to an event for Naina’s Fundraising and a variety of lots including, as expected, many sporting items. As it was the hottest day of the Summer to date, the fire brigade were on hand to cool everyone down which was much appreciated. Well done to all those involved in both of these events it was a pleasure to be involved, albeit in a small way, in both of them. The Royal Welsh Radnorshire Committee are holding ‘Painscastle Does Posh’ at Llandeviron Farm, Llanbedr on Friday 16th August, whilst Glasbury Play Park Committee are hosting the Annual Duck Race and BBQ on the Bont on Sat 31st August. For further details on these events or should you wish to contact me please do so on either of the following 07855 752110 or cllr.chris.davies@powys.gov.uk Best wishes Chris

News from Gwernyfed High School Music at Gwernyfed: On the beautiful summer evening of Thursday 4th July, the music department at Gwernyfed High School held its usual Summer Concert to celebrate the talents of our many musicians. The backdrop to the concert was a stunning visual presentation of photographs and images on our large cinema screen. Year 8 pupils Tegan, Amy, Alice and Chloe chose some great visuals to highlight the work and activities of pupils across the school. A second montage showed work from the new Gwernyfed Art & Design website, showcasing the amazing talent of the pupils. With our Head Teacher as compere for the evening, students entertained to the usual high standard. Singing club opened the concert with their renditions of “Titanium”,The Script’s “The Man Who Can’t be Moved”, and Adele’s “Set Fire to the Rain”. This was followed by solo and group items from some of our youngest students right up to year 13. These included a lively jazz number on clarinet by Sam Davies in year 8, Owain and Ross rocking out on guitars, and the eclectic mix of items from Mr
Cooper’s guitar students. A particularly memorable performance was from our latest ukulele players, Ned and Jack in year 8 who have started a new trend! We raised over £300 on the night which is to go to Naina’s Cancer Fund. Congratulations to all who took part and the PTA for again providing the evening’s refreshments. The next concert will be just before Christmas. We are also please that once again the school are hosting a summer Rock School. Please contact Ian Cooper at iancoopermusic@hotmail.com for more information or to book a place.

The Thoughts of a Greengrocer For the first time in ages there are no complaints about the weather. This sunshine is wonderful and is ripening the summer fruits perfectly. Although its season is well over, here’s an interesting little thing about asparagus. Just as our crop was finishing there were some big deliveries from Poland, almost as good as our own and a lot cheaper. They have obviously come over here, worked on the farms and learnt how it is done. Long term this might help to bring the price down but could quite possibly drive out a lot of the smaller British producers. English cherries have started, a sure sign that summer is here, but what short year we have. Once the cherries are done we will be into the gages, damsons and plums and then straight onto apples and pears. All these look as though there are good crops this year.

Fresh fruit and vegetables, quality wines and local jams and preserves
Changes in the weather have an enormous effect on the shop as in the last ten days of sunshine we have hardly sold any vegetables at all. It’s all salads and fruit with a few courgettes and aubergines that lend themselves to barbecues. This can put the prices up - particularly for the salads amongst which are some plum tomatoes called Red Egg which are quite delicious and slice very well with not too much juice for sandwich making. I have noticed this year that the Pembroke potatoes that should have been around well before the local ones have had a problem. The round white fleshed potato that we all know and love has been replaced with the kidney shaped yellow fleshed potato common in Spain, Morocco, Egypt and Israel. Although these latter are quite good for salads and are very welcome when they come so long before the British are even planted we really do want something better from the home produced. The Herefordshire potatoes are now in full swing and are beautiful. Article sipplied by Sturat Pritchard, Castle Greengrocers.

It’s even better than last year with the return of some old favourites as well as many new walks, including family friendly walks and themed walks - for example: foraging, geology, archaeology, local history and ancient churches. There are opportunities to learn new techniques or to polish up any rusty skills including map reading, navigation and nordic walking as well as a beginnerís session on mountain walking - in heart of the beautiful Llanthony valley. We have listened to your feedback and included more longer walks this year, including one 25 miler definitely not for the faint hearted! And weíve added some classic local walks, including the Brecon Beacons Horseshoe. The Hay Walking festival is run by the Hay Tourism Group, a group of local businesses and residents that have come together to promote sustainable tourism initiatives in and around Hay-on-Wye. Everyone organising the Walking Festival and leading walks are volunteers and we are fortunate to have input both from local walking enthusiasts, who know their patch very well and from professional walk leaders, who can be found leading expeditions across the world. We’re grateful that they all still find time to support us and lead the walks on their home hills. Last year a large number of walks sold out well in advance of the Festival. So start booking now to get the walks of your choice. Full details can be found on our website at www.haywalking.org

The Deli Pot Talgarth Situated at the foot of the black mountains in the picturesque town of talgarth WJ George Butchers had been trading for over 130 years. This year the company has diversified and running alongside their existing business is a new delicatessen called ‘The Deli Pot’.
Running the new venture is Georgina George and her team which consists of Salome Evans and Helen Flawn Powell. Inside the new modern deli is a feast of delights which have been sourced by Georgina. The aim was to sell Deli products produced mostly by small producers specializing in goods not available in supermarkets. In the Shop is a large display of different varieties of Cheese’s, some local and the rest from other parts of the country and Europe. They also stock a great range of cooked meats mostly produced by WJ George Butchers including some old favorites like pickled Ox Tounge and Brawn. On the theme of cooked meats they also have
salamis etc Sourced from parts of Italy and Spain. They also sell a fine cured ham on the bone which was fed on acorns then cured for many months. It is truly a Mouth-watering delight. Along with the cooked meats we sell a range of patchwork pates either frozen or fresh. Along with patchwork pate’s they also stock in the freezer patchwork’s adult Ice Creams. That’s Ice-cream with a twist. If you are into balsamic vinegars and oils then the deli pot has just the thing for you. They have oils and vinegars on tap with many varieties and flavours available. All you need to do is buy whichever size empty bottle you want from the deli then the choice is yours what you fill it up with. A great idea for a present. Two Wheels, One World Do you remember the first time you rode a bike? Cycling provides so many opportunities to improve our health and wellbeing, broaden our horizons and meet new people. With Team GB riding high and more people opting to commute in a greener way, there has never been a better time for British cycling. How many bikes do you see on the local roads, though? Currently, levels of participation in cycling are low in our area and cycling is often perceived as difficult, dangerous or expensive. Two Wheels, One World (TWOW) is a project which aims to encourage people to get on their bikes! Beginners and women – who are often less confident and comfortable about going out for a ride – are especially welcome. Velo Hay is a new cycling club in Hay on Wye which meets on a Wednesday evening, and is part of the TWOW project. Everyone is welcome! TWOW is also about exploring the links with Timbuktu - Hay’s twin community in Mali. Thanks
to support from Hay Town Council through the Community Link and Learn project, and working with Hay2Timbuktu, we will be finding out about the status of bikes in Timbuktu and will sharing experiences and stories with our Malian twin. A charity cycle ride to Saintes, Timbuktu’s twin town in France, is planned for the autumn. If you fancy this challenge or would simply like to get out on your bike for a gentle ride with a friendly bunch of people, please get in touch. Local businesses are also getting on board - it’s now even easier to enjoy a spin out towards Eardisley with free bike passage over the Whitney Toll Bridge thanks to an arrangement between the bridge owners and Drover Cycles. Contact Anna on Email: anna@drovercycles.co.uk, Tel: 01497 822419 or call in at Drover Cycles on Forest Road in Hay (opposite the GP surgery). “Just say it was awesome!” A couple of years ago James, Colan and I - the Badham Family trio, went along to Llangorse Multi Activity Centre to spend a morning Climbing, Abseiling and Caving. We loved it, so were chuffed to be invited back to try the new Junior Challenge Course. James now 9 years old was happy to work on a Sunday morning in exchange for an ice cream once the Challenge Course was completed. If only all my team could be paid in this way! We arrived at the Centre and the place was buzzing, from campers to local children having horse riding lessons.
entertained too.
First off James was equipped up with relevant safety gear. Andy, our instructor was great. James really listened to everything he had to say. As we walked out towards the Junior Challenge Course Cariad got to see the horses. That pleased her. We bumped into some local parents we knew ... if you’re looking for riding lessons, this seems a favorite.
Each section has a series of obstacles and crossings, including: stepping stones; hanging tunnels; balance logs; burma buckets; a Vine traverse; swinging tyres; and much more! Not forgetting the two zip lines at the end of each section to bring you back to the ground!
The Course has been built amongst well matured trees and shrubs. Immediately giving a great ‘in the wild’ feel! Andy hooked James up to a continuous safety system, which ends at the bottom of each of the two zip lines. This meant it would be impossible for James to unhook himself. Co being the protective dad looked closely at this. So with dads mind at rest James was off …
was awesome! Mummy Lisa Marie ... when can I go back?” I think that says it all.
You could tell James was a little nervous. But it wasn’t long before he was overcoming the challenges ahead. There were mowed paths so we could travel around and see James at all times. This was fantastic, Cariad was in her pushchair so it meant seeing her big brother kept her
On the way home I asked James what he’d like me to put in the article. His reply, ‘’Just say it
The Junior Challenge Course costs £15, lasts about 1 hour and is suitable for 6 - 12 year olds. You could mix things up and also try 1 hours Indoor Climbing for only £25. If you wanted to make a day of it, a full day of adventure costs £45. There’s a lovely ‘Base Camp’ café with brilliant views overlooking Llangorse Lake so you won’t need to go off site. A great idea for the Summer Holidays. For more information and to book your adventure, please call the centre on 0333 600 20 20 or visit www.activityuk.com Thank you to Andy and staff for a super duper morning. Lisa Marie & James Badham

Interiors A Q &
How can I make my small lounge look bigger? Use cool colours on the walls, and keep the flooring light. This will expand the sense of space. Create as much visual floorspace as possible. E.g use glass or Perspex coffee tables, and a sofa or sideboards on legs, so you can still see some of the floor underneath. Move furniture back against the walls to maximise the space. Eliminate clutter with clever storage, like a floor to ceiling slimline built in cube cupboard, leaving some spaces empty to fool the eye. Use classically simple curtains with no ruffles or patterns or alternatively sheer fabrics in the same colour family as the walls, this will blend in and avoid a contrast that contracts the space. Reflect natural light around the room where possible. i.e hang a large but in proportion mirror on an opposite wall to create the illusion of increasing the space. Or use a series of artfully arranged mirrored picture frames for your artwork. For more advice contact: Westbrook Interiors.

Me & my froggie
I love animals I do. There’s always lots in our garden. And I’m not just talking about our pet chickens Dolly and the gang. Daddy found a froggie in our strawberry patch. That very morning mummy had bought me a froggie hat from the car boot sale. Do you think my new friend liked my hat? Or do you think he was too worried to be on my feeding tray? Daddy also found a hedgehog behind the shed. I really wanted to touch the hedgehog but my big brother wouldn’t let me. So I cried. But I still didn’t get my own way!

When a hedgehog curls up it’s for protection. They have prickly spines everywhere except on their face, legs, and bellies. They eat insects, small mice, snails, lizards, frogs, eggs, and even snakes. Though hedgehogs mainly stay on the ground, they swim quite well and even climb trees.

News from Timbuktu
Communications with our contacts in Timbuktu are still difficult. However, we’ve been able to get a good insight into how the city has changed dramatically since the occupation via online sources. The Guardian ran a series of seven short films which we would recommend viewing to anyone interested. Links to the films can be found on our website. The films show that there are severe problems with the infrastructure of the city - lack of government, resources, food and jobs. In addition there are social issues - how to reintegrate a multiracial society and regain trust.
future. We hope you will join us in giving our Malian friends a warm Hay welcome. Please check the Hay2Timbuktu website for details of how you can get involved, or email us at info@ hay2timbuktu.org.uk. Meanwhile, the Two Towns One World projects in Hay are underway. The cycling group meet every Wednesday evening, details can be found at facebook.com/VeloHay or call Drovers on 01497 831561. The potters group will be conducting schools and community workshops later in the year – more news on how you can get involved next month.

Hopefully some of you met them and found out more about their work. Do pop in to the Hay Makers to see some of their beautiful pieces.
Another Malian visit is planned for the end of September. Hay2Timbuktu are delighted to be hosting a delegation of teachers and midwives who will spend ten days in Hay. The midwives will be spending time in Brecon and Hereford hospitals and will take back their learning to clinics in Timbuktu. The teachers will be visiting local schools and will hopefully gain some skills that they can transfer to schools in Timbuktu. Dear Agony Aunt, ...... my problem started when I began suspecting my wife of having an affair. The usual signs, phone rings, but if I answer the caller hangs up. And my wife has been going out with “the girls” a lot recently, often getting back late. Once I picked up her mobile just to see the time. She went berserk, snatching the phone from my hand and accusing me of spying on her. Last night she went out again, and I decided to hide and see if she came home by taxi or if someone dropped her off. It was while I was crouched down behind my Jaguar that I spotted a serious leak of oil from the engine. So my problem is this - do you think I could tackle the engine problem myself, or should I take it back to the professionals?

No pain no gain? Not necessarily! Have you ever wondered why so many actively avoid the local fitness classes, health clubs and many sports available? Hell, you might be one of them! Things are improving though: 16.9% now play sports 3 times a week, up from 15.5% in 2005/6. (I remember MUCH lower figures than this!). However a massive 52.3% of adults do no exercise at all. We know the cost to our health and I won’t waste precious space here going through it all, (briefly obesity, heart disease et al), BUT this issue needs looking at! In chatting to ‘abstainers’ it seems it is often the thought of being ‘beasted’ with a muscle bound ex-soldier trainer (if we’re lucky right girls haha?!), counting out 100’s of reps. In addition this may be in a big group where you feel intimidated, pink, and out of your depth, This is the death knoll to starting up! But do
you know what – although the best results DO COME with hard work (in time), trainers are clued up enough to start you off gently and progress you at a pace you’ll manage, or offer classes at entry level from which to progress. We also screen you to see what you can do and what needs adapting or modifying to suit you. I promise you I’ve had ladies in their mid-60’s starting with huge trepidation who can now do (I kid you not), full body press ups! (I’ve had one do an ‘interview’ here - you may recall!). I implore you to just start at a local class made for you (there are so many now), and then ‘keep your hand in’ with something each week, even ‘Cat Fit” is now a subif just one session! company of G&T’s Sept issue; how to hence new logo! adhere. We rent half an acre of organic land and we are growing vegetables including salads, onions, potatoes, beetroot, tomatoes, peppers, beans, peas, leeks, herbs, soft fruit and flowers. We use our own share of the produce and any surplus is sold by local suppliers in Hay, or at the entrance to the project. Any regular or occasional help of any kind would be very much appreciated. Talgarth’s 18th Annual Celebration 24th-25th August 2013 Welcome to the l8th Annual Talgarth Festival. This year we are staying with the ‘Traditional Theme’ which showcases the community and the life of a Welsh market town. Nestled at the foot of the Black Mountains in a river valley with views of the nearby Brecon Beacons, Talgarth is in an idyllic rural setting. The Festival, over two days, gives visitors a great family day out with fun for all ages. This year the Talgarth Male Voice choir will be in concert on the Friday evening, 23rd August, in Saint Gwendoline’s church. This is before the official opening of the Festival but a good opener for a weekend packed with events. The opening ceremony at mid-day on Saturday will be heralded by a quarter peal of bells by local bell ringers, just as the church bells traditionally summon the congregation to church here they will announce the opening ceremony. The town’s church will be one of the many venues and features of the Festival with a Festival Service for families on the Sunday morning. Throughout the weekend there will be a Flower Festival, and an exhibition of local school children’s art work. Refreshments will also be available at the church. There will plenty of entertainment for all ages with live music and dancing and street entertainment for children such as a Punch and Judy Show on the Town Square, and a Teddies Bear’s Picnic in ‘Annie’s Garden’. Traditional rural crafts and skills will be shown in the Cattle Market, together with a variety of stalls out of doors as well as in the Town Hall. The Great Barn will have a Food Fare on the car park with a selection of foods and drinks. The Fire Station will be open to the public displaying the engines and equipment. In the Church Hall the Historical Society will be displaying its archives and talking to people about their memories of extreme weather in
the past. There will also be children’s activities and competitions during the Festival being run from the Church Hall car park. The Horticultural Society will be showing its winning entries in the Bell Hotel’s Barn with an auction of the produce at the end of the Festival. Llanelieu Church will be hosting a candlelit concert of harp music on the Saturday evening. Tickets sell out fast for this event. There are many more events too numerous to list here. The whole Festival concludes with a fireworks display on the Sunday evening. The whole weekend is packed with fun for all the family with no fees for parking and free entry to the Festival. So bring the whole family and stay the weekend if you can. For more details, please contact the Talgarth TIRC - or The Chairman on 01874 711289 or the Secretary on 01874 711818.

Bryngwyn Riding for the Disabled
Bryngwyn Riding for the Disabled (RDA) Group would like to thank everyone who came and supported our first fun day on 29th June. We had a very successful day and raised over £1000 for our charity. Bryngwyn RDA Group was established in May 2012 when it was realised that there were people with physical and learning disabilities living in the area that wanted to go riding. RDA uses horses and ponies to provide therapy, achievement and enjoyment to people with disabilities all over the UK. The Bryngwyn Group is based in the heart of some of the most beautiful countryside in Powys, offering people the chance to ride out in the hills or have lessons in the outdoor school. It is currently the only Group able to offer Riding for the Disabled in the mid Powys area. The Group offers fun and exciting opportunities for children to ride on Saturday afternoons; adults can be catered for too during the week. Riders gain in many ways from being able to join in with the riding activities. They get to be with their friends and ride the fantastic ponies and horses, just like any other children, but they also get to develop new skills and improve their physical well-being. New rider Craig says that ‘I feel special and independent when I am riding. My horse Harry is a nice horse, quiet and safe to ride. I look forward to my sessions every week. I love my horse Harry.’ The Group relies on an experienced team of volunteers to make the sessions as safe and rewarding as possible and are always looking to recruit new volunteers. As a charity we also rely on donations from the public to make the riding financially possible and are currently needing any second hand items that we can sell in a charity shop in Llandrindod Wells between the 14th – 21st Sept. These items can be anything from clothes to toys but do need to be in good condition. Items can be dropped off at Bryngwyn Riding Centre (01497 851669) or collected from your door. For more information on the riding, volunteering or donating second hand items please contact Ruth Stevens 01497 851360.
