The Feedback Forms from our January issue have been coming in thick and fast. I’m yet to go through them all with a fine toothcomb but I’m pleased with the general feeling – people enjoy Wye Local. Some can’t wait for it to come out each month! Some refer to it as their Bible! We had new features planned for 2014, but now we can add a few more additions to this list. News from Talgarth by Cllr.William Powell Powys County Councillor for Talgarth As I draw together my thoughts for this month’s column, we are experiencing another spate of wet, windy weather - with even the first Gwernyfed RFC v Brecon Derby of 2014 falling victim to a waterlogged pitch at Trefecca Road. Mercifully, however, it is nothing to compare with the storms that battered Cardigan Bay and Pembrokeshire in the early days of this New Year, and where I was so impressed with the resilience of local people in dealing with the aftermath. Nevertheless, those who yearn for a traditional, old fashioned Winter may yet have what they wish for, as February often holds a surprise in store for us. In the meantime, we can console ourselves that, in these days of soaring heating costs, at least we are not consuming as much energy as we were this time last year.

For Talgarth 2014 has started on a positive note, especially for a number of local businesses. Some were sceptical when the latest phase of the Talgarth Business Park was built a few years back, with the aid of European Union and Welsh Government funding, and thought it was sure to be a ‘white elephant.’ I am pleased to report that it is now at full occupancy, with the arrival of the Wye and Usk Foundation. The Foundation is a charity which does a huge amount of work to enhance the environment of rivers in our part of Wales, helping to develop angling, which is both a much loved pastime, as well as bringing millions of pounds into the rural economy. Furthermore, the Foundation also fosters partnership with farmers and landowners to manage river catchments, so as to reduce flood risk. In this context, I was delighted to be present at the official opening of their new HQ in Talgarth, which was attended by the Welsh Minister for Natural Resources and Food, Alun Davies AM. The Wye and Usk Foundation is keen to develop further links

Talgarth Town Hall will shortly be hosting a very special event - the Talgarth YFC pre Rally Supporters Dinner, on Saturday 1st February. The event is an early opportunity to show support for Talgarth YFC hosting this year’s Brecknock Rally - the 70th in the history of the Federation - at Great House Farm on Saturday, 7th June (by kind invitation of Mr & Mrs VJ Stephens and family.) Hosting the County Rally is a major coup for Talgarth YFC, only a few years after the club was reestablished, with up to 2,000 visitors expected on the day - and anything up to 3,000 for the traditional barn dance!

The Bakers’ Table Cafe and Bakery at Felin Talgarth Mill has already done well in 2014, with network television coverage in ITV’s Britain’s Best Bakery and can also look forward to the Countryside Alliance’s ‘Rural Oscars’ Awards Ceremony at the Senedd on 25th March, having been shortlisted in the local food category, alongside the Old Stables Tea Rooms in Hay on Wye. It is also good to hear positive reports from the local hotels and pubs of a good start to the New Year, especially with the newly refurbished Bridge End Inn in Talgarth taking its place once again and winning favourable reviews.

News from Glasbury Ward by Chris Davies Powys County Councillor for Glasbury A great deal has happened since I last put pen to paper to write this column. You will now be aware of the changes that have yet again taken place at Powys County Council with a new leader and a ‘new’ cabinet. Let us hope that we will now have a period of stability and allow the real issues which we are all facing to take priority. Politics can sometimes be a lonely place to be, as I recently found out in my position as a Member of the Brecon Beacons National Park Authority. The Local Development Plan (LDP) was sent back to us by an Inspector, containing changes which I felt had little understanding or sympathy for our communities and contained many issues that would have an adverse effect upon them. Therefore I was the only one to vote against it! I still believe it was the right thing to do. Thanks must be given to all those on both sides of the river in Glasbury for spending so many hours on ensuring that the village toilets are able to remain open. A Trust is in the process of being set up and

a willing team of volunteers are ready to help. If you are able to offer any help or financial support, please get in touch with either myself or with the Trust Chair Mrs Sally Williams at Glasbury Garage. Praise must be given to the many community events that were held over the Christmas and New Year period. A Christmas fete was held in Painscastle for the first time and proved to be an outstanding success helping bring a difficult year to a happy conclusion. It was also great to see communities using well known venues for alternative uses. A superb farmers/local country market was held in Llyswen Church, whilst an excellent craft fair was held at The Harp Inn at Glasbury. I wonder what will be next – so watch this space!! AA Inspectors award AA Rosette for The Old Black Lion An Inn with Rooms

Dolan Leighton, Proprietor of The Old Black Lion talks about a visit by AA inspectors and owning such an ancient Inn. The AA Inspectors just turned up in December without any warning. You have no idea they have been staying until they’ve checked out. I was stunned when the unassuming couple called me over after breakfast for the “big reveal”. It seems the Inspectors don’t just run their fingers along the tops of furniture checking for dust (like my Auntie Bronwen) but look at food, service and atmosphere too. I was thrilled they were more than satisfied with their stay, confirming yet again our four-star rating.

News from Glasbury Get Together Club

At this time of year committee members try to put a programme together for the coming events, with, hopefully, some input from Club members. It has been mentioned that it would be good to make another visit to the Malvern Spring Show from 8th – 11th May, so we will look into this. WE do need member interest with this, as with all the future outings, to make them viable. Our next club meeting will be on Wednesday 26th February 2.30pm.- 4.30pm in Glasbury Village Hall. News from Gwernyfed High School February 2014 Prize Winners Gwernyfed High School held their annual prize giving ceremony at the Carol Concert held in the magnificent Brecon Cathedral. The trophies were presented by the Chairman of Governors Rev. Ian Charlesworth. The following prizes were awarded to pupils in Years 8 to 11: Academic Award - Eirwen Watton Abberley, Isabelle Goodridge, Lily Biggs and Ellie Scruby. Gwernyfed Sports Centre February is here and there is still a chance to take on the challenges of all those New Year resolutions. We all need a reason to get out the door especially when the nights are dark and cold. Maybe it’s setting our selves a bigger challenge further down the line, something to train for or simply the need to feel fitter and healthier. Coming to group classes, sharing a lift and not wanting to let down the person you’ve arranged to go with is a great way to guarantee you make the effort. Believe me the results are worth it. There is many a time I’ve not wanted to get out and go for a run, but just being part of a bigger group can really lift you up and before you know it you’re actually enjoying yourself. Here at Gwernyfed we try and make all our classes more than just an exercise class but great fun as well. A chance to catch up with friends and as corny as it sounds make new ones as well. It maybe that you play a specific sport, cycle or run but need an additional type of cross training. Any of our classes will add too your training, improve your cardio vascular, strength and conditioning, and also keep things interesting! Spinning Monday 6pm 7pm Thursday 6pm Monday and Thursday are Spinning nights, these classes are very popular and you need to book in advance. Spinning is a great way to improve stamina. Di our instructor will put you through your paces but at your own level. This class is suitable for beginners and those who want to push themselves to the max! Circuits Tuesday 6.45pm Hold on to your hats! Simone will get the most out of you during these sessions. Great for cross training and all round fitness. Strength, Stamina, the all round body workout. The sessions change every few weeks so you never get bored. No need to book in advance just drop in. After the success of last years Walk to Run a women’s running group was formed for those that can now run a bit and want to improve. They meet at various locations and run on all surfaces and weather conditions! The average distance is 4 miles with warm up and cool down and sometimes a sneaky extra bit of training if there’s time. Plus we like to have a bit of a chat on the way round, never a dull moment! Hay Cat Rescue is 10 years old on February 7th. In that time we have found loving homes for more than 900 cats and kittens and were pleased to find 94 of these in 2013. HCR has rescued any number of cats from sorry situations and cared for many abandoned kittens. Just before Christmas, two kittens were dumped ill with flu and left dying of thirst and starvation, by the roadside, near Hay. Thankfully, they have been nursed back to health and now have the promise of a loving home. HCR also has spent many hours trapping ‘feral’ cats to get them neutered, putting a stop to growing colonies of unwanted cats. To raise funds to help more, Hay Cat Rescue is hoping to repeat the success of last year with another Plant Fayre on Saturday 3rd May 2014, in Cusop Village Hall, from 10am to 3pm. We would be very grateful for donations of plants and garden related items for this, as well as any cat related items. New goodies and unwanted gifts for the Tombola would also be welcome and very much appreciated. Thank you to all the kind and caring souls who help us to feed the waifs and strays in our care with donations of cat food left in our collecting boxes at the Co-op and at Hay & Brecon Farmers. News from Hay Town Council

It’s a new year but the problems facing the residents of Hay are still the same. And let’s not forget the visitors who come from far and wide to sample all that Hay has to offer, and not just the bookshops. They are hugely important, even in this electronic age, but Hay has so much else to offer - antique shops, cafes, restaurants, and glorious countryside catering for anglers, walkers and canoeists. Public toilets is the big issue facing residents and visitors to Hay at the moment. They are vitally important to both groups but with Powys County Council facing big cuts in its budget they are one of many public services which the authority will seek to devolve to local organisations to fund and run. If not the alternative is complete closure. Hay Town Council (HTC) and our local county councillor, Gareth Ratcliffe, have been endeavouring to keep the toilets open. Several proposals have been put to Powys CC. So far our only success has been a delayed date of closure; D-day is now the end of March. Meanwhile, we await an official response to what we believe is the most realistic way of funding and operating the facilities locally, i.e. through a small levy on car park charges, rather than an increase in council tax. However, the political turmoil at Powys CC is not helping our case. Toilets, however, is not the only issue we are dealing with. The other big issue is the new school/community centre/library/council offices. A multi-purpose building about which much energy has been expended over the last couple of years. Will it get built? And when? Will it serve the needs of ALL the users adequately and safely? I don’t know the answers to those questions. Who does? If the original plans had been implemented, I suggest much of this article would be redundant. In the meantime, watch this space! Finally, HTC are working towards a better system of communicating with residents. We have not yet embraced all the aspects of social media available to us. Train or remain the same! The beginning of the year always has me pondering on those who WANT to join an exercise programme but don’t! All they see is intimidation, what they fear is PAIN, how they cope is to kid themselves they’ll ‘do it someday’ or there’s no point as they’re ‘too far gone’! How do we reach these potential clients, and then IF we succeed, how do we keep them? I cannot pretend to know all the answers but will never give up trying! My best poster ever simply said: “If not now, then when?” – it really DID bring me new clients and is a very effective message, BUT this month I want to cover another important statement, and it is this: “Your body will cope with whatever you throw at it”. But go lightly! If you go to any kind of exercise class where they beast you on the first session (you see this on TV!) it is SIMPLY WRONG – and dangerous. There’s no hurry to get our clients fit especially IF they’ve been inactive or sedentary for some time and are feeling pretty unconditioned. No, EASE into it and glide into fitness – the body WILL ADAPT to the force

or load offered, so start off light, slow, less intensity, less ‘travel’, less session time… it WILL adapt and you then increase these factors … it will adapt … you then increase …you get the picture! In time your heart becomes more efficient, your muscles respond to the increasing loads (you get stronger with more definition, lung capacity improves, your brain becomes more focused, bones become denser and your entire body can cope with more stress – what was hard before becomes easier. Have you any future plans for your work? Last year I showed my work at market stalls in the area, Herefordshire Art week, the Caemawr Studio and Quirk. So more of the same I think, with fingers crossed for any new opportunities. What advice would you give a local artist? Learn the relevant skills, practise, make mistakes, practise some more, be playful and enjoy yourself.

The other artists in Quirk and at the Caemawr Studio, Tashi Mannox’s Tibetan Calligraphy and Art, Polly Miller’s paintings, Ben Hill’s furniture and Emanation Smith’s colourful crocheted yarn bombs. Artist statement: I am at my most happy when weaving together yarn, paint or words to create something new. It feels magical. I hope this is palpable in my work.

Where did you train or gain experience? Niel Bally in Talgarth taught me to draw and paint. There are a wealth of textile artists and teachers in this area who have taught and generously shared their skills with me. Further afield I learnt how to felt into silk (nunofelting) from a Norwegian artist May Hvistendahl and more recently how to weave with experimental yarns at Linton Tweeds in Carlisle ( they produce fabric for Chanel and Jigsaw).

New Now Open

Yak-Y-DA Restaurant & Take Away Yak-Y-Da !! I always used to look forward to Tuesday evenings for a take-away from The Yak Mobile, but now the cleverly named Yak-Y-Da has taken over sole management of the bar and restaurant at The Holly Bush Inn the world is my oyster! One can eat in or take away from there nearly every lunchtime and evening (closed Sunday evenings). Khadka, who has just finished over 17 years’ service in the Ghurka Regiment, and Shyam the excellent chef in residence who ran the Yaks and Yetis restaurant in Ross on Wye for ten years, specialise in Authentic Nepali and Thai Cuisine. Buddhist prayer flags featuring ‘The Wind Horse’ and Nepalese artefacts adorn the walls in the newly refurbished and spotlessly clean Inn, which is on the road between Hay and Glasbury. Robert and I were delighted to be able to visit Yak-Y-Da one cold wet night in January. We sat at a table by the wood burner and had a wonderful time tasting a selection of the quality dishes such as starters of Chilli Chicken and Crunchy Wok Vegetables, main courses of Kathmandu Curry, Mountain Lamb Curry, King Prawns and the famous Green and Red Curries. Desserts consist of Thai Fried Bananas, Yoghurt, and Vanilla Ice Cream with honey, ginger or coconut. The flavours are superb. The Thoughts of a Greengrocer Writing this now in the middle of January it still has a Christmas aftermath feel and yet we are three weeks past the shortest day and although the mornings can still be pretty grim the afternoons are extending which is marvellous. So far, I must be honest, we have been very lucky with the weather. Although the rain can be a nuisance it’s a positive relief to see it at 2.30 or 3.00 in the morning and to know that we haven’t got to deal with snow and ice - trying to keep a long wheelbase van going in the right direction on snow is the devil’s own game! I thought that we would be finished commenting on last year’s crops by now but the potatoes (yet again) are a bit unusual. It is noticeable that the Maris Piper and King Edwards are very small and apparently this is because the glorious July weather was (yes, I’m serious) too hot; and it stopped them growing! Other varieties are affected to a lesser degree and one or two such as Marfona (a nice tasty all rounder) have gone the opposite way and are enormous. A combination of published recipes and adventurous chefs means that I am constantly looking for new items, one the recent ones being Radish Pods. A vegetable much used in north India they a not dissimilar in looks to the Kenyan fine beans and are the result of not picking radishes and leaving them to flower and fruit. When I first enquired after them in Birmingham I was met with blank stares so I went all modern and looked it up on the Internet and next time I asked for Moongre (sometimes spelt Mungra) and it was there! Even at my age one is never too old to learn. I have noticed this winter the we now have a lot more of the Cavalo Nero being grown in this country. Not many years ago when I first took the business over this was a very unusual vegetable grown by specialists only; but now it is becoming mainstream. It’s a lovely veg being a member of the Kale family. It has long very dark green leaves which one treats like any other kale but with much less cooking time involved. In cooking it holds it’s colour and so is quite impressive on the plate - in the middle of winter it can be nice to have a more vibrantly coloured vegetable around. Prize Bingo The Prize Bingos went very well yet again for 2013. With eight Bingo evenings, we raised £2,000 for various local charities. The hard work of getting all the prizes for each session was well worth it. So many people to thank – so fear of missing out anyone, we are not naming names – you know who you are ... However our Bingo Caller Darren Ricketts must be thanked for his continued support to us along with Hay Dial-a-Ride, who turn up to each meeting and join in the fun – providing much needed transport for some of our players. Of course the venue must also be mentioned as Baskerville Hall lets us have the use of the main function room free – this is a great saving on putting on our evenings. We generate money to purchase our Bingo Books and doing our posters etc from occasional Prize draws on the night. So every penny is accounted for and used appropriately. Any donation of prizes that we could use can always be left at reception at the Hotel or call either of us and we can arrange collection. News from Fairtrade Hay Thanks to everyone who came to the Fair Trade Christmas Market in December. We raised £268 which will be invested in Shared Interest Shares, supporting fair trade producers and businesses and help to transform communities across the globe. Our thoughts are now turning to Fairtrade Fortnight which takes place from 24th February to 9th March. This year the theme is bananas. Despite over 1.2 million Fairtrade bananas being sold in the UK each year this still only marks one third of total banana sales.There’s a long way to go to ensure that all those involved in growing and farming bananas get a fair deal.

Learning from the Past to Preserve our Future We are very fortunate to live in an area of the country which is literally saturated with great examples of built heritage whether it is a humble cottage, a medieval hall, an estate house or even a castle. However we are in danger of losing this asset as older craftspeople retire from the construction industry taking with them years of acquired expertise. In the past, houses often were built, not with the involvement of an architect, but to a design determined by the materials available locally, and the work was carried out by craftsmen and women using techniques evolved over centuries. Original timber frame structures in these properties show evidence of being hewn using hand tools and you

often see carpenters marks that have been etched into the wood hundreds of years before. The walls were built using only material dug up from the ground in the immediate vicinity; the stone would have been sourced and the mortars mixed by hand. These properties represent the skill and knowledge of our ancestors who built them and within their walls hold a very local history of those who constructed them and the environment in which they lived. Unfortunately the modern construction industry does not equip its tradesmen and women to understand the specific requirements of pre-1919 buildings. We need to train our young craftspeople and pay respect to those who are already skilled through accredited courses and inspiring teaching. In achieving this goal, we will serve to protect the buildings that we take for granted, so that they can be enjoyed by future generations.

They were nominated some time ago by a local resident and since then a few more residents have supplied forms to the Alliance, nominating the quality family butchers for this prestigious award. Geraldine knew that they had been nominated but what with the hectic time they had before Christmas she hadn’t actually had time to check the Countryside Alliance website. She was so thrilled, and proud, to discover that they were one of four in the Regional Finals, and thinks that being involved in the Countryside Alliance’s Game Campaign in 2012 helped put them on the map, so to speak. The butchers are judged on the quality of service, the quality of product and the general ambiance of the shop overall. All the businesses will now be judged and will go to the Senedd at Cardiff Bay on 25th March to hear who has taken the Welsh titles and won the honour of going on to represent Wales at the Houses of Parliament in London in April with the chance of a British title. Shrews pack a hectic lifetime into less than two years. Their tiny hearts beat 1200 times per minute. The smallest of our three species just six centimetres long, the Pygmy Shrew eats more than its own body weight every day. Like the slightly larger Common Shrew it must consume worms, insects, spiders and snails day and night with short naps between fast foraging. Water Shrews, bigger and darker, live by clean streams and ponds and their diet includes small fish and amphibians. During spring and summer a female Common Shrew may produce five litters of five to seven pups. Owls, Kestrels, Foxes and Weasels take many. Cats catch shrews but do not usually eat them. A dead shrew brought in by a cat is probably how most people see one. Brecknock Wildlife Trust, with funding from The Cooperative, seeks your help to learn more about shrews and other mammals. Recipe Page Venison with squash & sweet potato Ingredients

350g pack ready-diced butternut squash and sweet potato 15g grated Parmesan or Grana Padano 1 tbsp olive oil 2 venison steaks 100ml beef stock (made with ½ stock cube) 1 tsp redcurrant jelly 300g young spinach A handful of vegetable crisps, to serve

Orange & pomegranate cheesecake Ingredients 250g digestive biscuits 100g butter, melted 600g full-fat cream cheese zest 3 oranges cut out the segments for the decoration 3 tbsp milk 100g icing sugar 150ml double cream seeds 1 pomegranate, or 110g tub pomegranate seeds

Method 1. Bring a small pan of salted water to the boil and cook the butternut squash and sweet potato for 8 minutes, until tender. Drain and mash with grated Parmesan or Grana Padano and a grinding of black pepper. 2. Meanwhile, heat 1 tbsp olive oil in a frying pan over a medium-high heat. Season the venison steaks and pan-fry for 4-5 minutes each side, until mediumrare. Remove and rest for 5 minutes. 3. Pour 100ml beef stock (made with ½ stock cube) into the pan and bubble, scraping the meaty juices off the bottom of the pan, until reduced by half, then stir in 1 tsp redcurrant jelly. 4. Pour boiling water over the spinach until wilted. Drain and squeeze out any excess water. 5. Slice the venison and serve with the sauce, mashed squash and sweet potato, wilted spinach and a handful of vegetable crisps on the side.

Method Crush the biscuits roughly – either put them in a plastic food bag and crush with a rolling pin, or whizz them in a food processor to chunky crumbs. Transfer to a bowl, mix in the melted butter and tip into a 23cm springform tin. Using your fingers or the back of a spoon, press the biscuit mixture evenly to form the base. Chill until set, about 30 mins. Put the soft cheese, zest, milk and icing sugar into a bowl and blend using an electric mixer until smooth. Add the cream and whisk until the mixture is the consistency of thick custard. Pour the filling over the biscuit base and spread evenly. Return to the fridge and chill until set, at least 4 hrs or overnight. To serve, top with the orange segments and scatter over the pomegranate seeds.
