Welcome To our July issue. We’ll start with some exciting news, we are looking for an Apprentice or Trainee to join our team. At 16 years of age I left High School and wasn’t really sure what I was going to do. Luckily for me there was a placement at Freestyle Print Shop, Brecon. Without owner Roy and work colleague Claire, I can hand on heart say I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for them. The role we are offering will be very varied and for the right applicant there are design and writing opportunities as well as the day to day admin. I will consider a part-time or full-time position – it all comes down to finding the right applicant. Please turn to page 2 for more information.

News from Talgarth by Cllr. William Powell Powys County Councillor for Talgarth As I prepare to sign off this month’s Wye Local column, we’ve had a taste of early summer, but the occasional violent thunder storms that we have experienced serve to remind us to take nothing for granted. Whilst event organisers can put in as much meticulous preparation as they like, the weather will always play an important but unpredictable part. In any case, plans are certainly taking shape for a range of popular local events in the next couple of months, including the Three Cocks Vintage Rally, the Green Man Festival and Talgarth Festival of the Black Mountains. More immediately this month, the Royal Welsh Show, Europe’s premiere agricultural show, will dominate the airwaves and mean that all roads lead to Llanelwedd. I cannot overstate the Show’s importance both for the agricultural industry and for our wider rural economy - and we are truly fortunate to have its permanent site on our doorstep. I often find myself celebrating the power of volunteering in our local community and this month is no exception. I am delighted to confirm that Talgarth Luncheon Club and the associated Meals on Wheels service have been nominated in the Powys Volunteer of the Year Awards 2014 in the group category. Week in, week out, the whole team of volunteers give up their precious time to ensure that our senior citizens have a wholesome hot meal and good fellowship, in a safe environment - and crucially one which is relatively secure from local authority cuts. The volunteers - and those who deliver the quality produce early on a Tuesday morning at modest cost - provide the means to maintain this precious service. The leadership currently falls to Cynthia Argent and Margaret Kite - but both always emphasise the importance of every team member in making it possible - and this is reflected in their nomination for this prestigious group award.

Whilst on the subject of volunteering and community commitment, it would be remiss of me not to comment upon two outstanding events that have graced Talgarth during the past month, hosted by the Stephens family at Great House Farm. Both the 70th Breconshire YFC County Rally last week - and the Four Choirs Concert this past weekend, celebrating 50 years of rugby at Gwernyfed RFC - have been a phenomenal success, drawing on deep reserves of teamwork and meticulous organisation. Together with other members of the family, I enjoyed both events immensely, and I am sure that they will be etched on our collective memory for many years to come. Rarely can our town have been showcased so positively to an audience from near and far. Everyone associated with the running of both events can feel justly proud of their contribution. In recent weeks, as some readers will know, I have continued to be particularly involved in the issues arising from Powys County Council’s new domiciliary care arrangements. I would just like to thank all those who have shared their concerns with me and given me the additional impetus to take up these urgent matters at the highest level – on behalf of our must vulnerable fellow citizens. In the meantime, please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any feedback or issues of concern on 07703 112113 or by email:william.powell@ wales.gov.uk Alternatively, you can come along to my regular advice surgery on Friday, 4th July from 5:00pm at Talgarth Tourist Information & Resource Centre – no appointment necessary. You can also pop into the TiRC to request a call from me on any issue, which may be troubling you. Best Wishes William

News from Glasbury Ward by Chris Davies Powys County Councillor for Glasbury At the time of writing this month’s column, it really does feel that summer has arrived. Unfortunately the same cannot be said about the weather for the recent Hay Literary Festival. The very difficult conditions did not dampen the spirits of those attending this wonderful event, although the traffic situation did cause a problem for local residents. Both the Festival and the Globe will be meeting local representatives shortly to discuss the situation to ensure that such discomfort to local residents does not reoccur. I am pleased to report that the long awaited speed restrictions in Glasbury and Three Cocks will be coming into effect next month. This will help make our local roads safer for drivers and pedestrians alike. Congratulations to the members of Talgarth YFC for bringing the Annual Breconshire Rally & Dance to our area. A tremendous day and night was had by all who attended. Also many congratulations to all connected with Gwernyfed RFC who have started off their

50th Anniversary Celebrations with an outstanding Concert at Great House,Talgarth. This club goes from strength to strength and is based around excellent organisation by a dedicated team and very loyal support. Best wishes for the next fifty years! The Royal Welsh Show will be with us in just a few weeks (21st – 24th July at Builth Wells) and this will be my first show as Assistant Honorary Show Director. I have responsibilities for the Horses, Main Ring, Displays and Commentaries at each event. Having been involved in the show for nearly 30 years, this is a great honour. So with the help of a team of over 140 stewards in my section I have the pleasure of ensuring that we offer twelve hours of entertainment each day in both the main ring and horse ring to an expectant crowd of nearly 250,000 people – No pressure there then!! Gardening Column

L.K. Beauty Wales A home based Business in Glasbury-On-Wye. Dahlia Enjoying a much deserved return to popularity, Dahlias are perfect for planting in summer borders and patio containers as well as for cut flowers in the home. Often flowering until the first frosts this bushy, tuberous, herbaceous perennial is native mainly to Mexico but also Central America and Colombia. Planting Dahlias in July will bring instant impact and warm, vibrant colour to your garden. Easy to grow and tolerant of a wide range of soil types, you don’t need to be a gardening expert to plant, grow and enjoy these plants in your garden year after year. Dahlias can become very tall, so be prepared to support them as they emerge and grow. Always make sure that the dahlias are kept well fed and watered, dosing with a high potash plant feed as soon as the flower heads appear. To keep them flowering for as long as possible dead head as the flower petals fall and expose a pointed bud. Don’t confuse these with the rounded buds which are the new flowers! Dahlia tubers can be left to over-winter in well drained soils but to be certain of having them again for the following year tubers should be lifted after the first frost have blackened the top growth. Dry them off in a frost proof shed or greenhouse and then store them in dry compost until Spring. In March or April they can be started into growth in pots and planted out after the last Spring frost. Article Supplied by Old Railway Line, Three Cocks.

Get fit fast!

explosiveness. The ‘wave effect ’is also very good for your heart.

For decades, people have been taught the wrong methods. They have been focusing on the number of calories they burn during their workouts. Some, (and I’ve seen this at my gym), do cardio machines for ages at low-med intensity because “they need to burn 700 calories.” The good news: Long Cardio sessions are now totally outdated IF you are doing it to lose weight/body fat/ girth. Have you ever noticed the amount of gym bunnies that work-out at the treadmill for years, a few times a week, and yet never actually seem to change shape? They might not actually even last that long – as they get disillusioned pretty quickly. They will also be far more prone to injury. The way forward is High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT). HIIT has been shown to burn up to 6-9 times as much fat compared to steady state cardio (long distance running, walking, etc). HIIT doesn’t just get rid of the fat faster than steady state cardio. It also improves your aerobic capacity, your speed, and your

This is also good news for us as trainers. Our clients are less likely to injure themselves; we can ‘sell’ short workouts much easier than long ones! And the results will astound you. You can tag this to the end of a good dog walk or whatever gets you warmed up. Clients, (in my experience) LOVE this type of training too, and get fit, fast. I use Tabata training in the gym with all levels of fitness, and not one member of all ages has not liked it. (It lasts 4 minutes which helps!). We stick to the same (fast) music, and we progress from ‘shallow’ movement, to deep range, but all in time with the same BPM (beats per min). We then add in more to the exercise (for example, squats, to squat jumps, to weighted jumps etc). If you’d like to experience this type of quick training call 01497 822995 and I’ll take you through a session FREE! 20 mins all in! (after a quick health assessment / warm up of course!) Local Talent: Rachel Ricketts Type of Artist? Sculptress. Range of Products: Animal sculpture, made as one off pieces or cast in various media, including bronze. Jesminite and other resins, in limited editions. Also a small number of drawings, paintings and prints. Where can your products be purchased? I am represented locally by the Lion Street Gallery, Hay on Wye. Work may also be purchased and commissions discussed at my own premises: Studio 54, Bridge St. Kington. Price range? £85 - £7,000. How long have you been an artist? Since 1980. Where did you train or gain experience? I trained as a painter, at Bournville and then Norwich Schools of art, but taught myself how to sculpt.

What other local artists do you admire? I am spoilt for choice, in Kington alone! Artist statement: Animals have always been the focus of my work in all media. After all, as extraordnary as human beings are, it’s all about more than just ourselves.

What has been your proudest moment? Discovering that another artist, Clive Hicks-Jenkins, (unknown to me at the time) had used some of my horse sculptures as subjects in his paintings. What would you class as ‘your masterpiece’? I don’t know that I would class anything as ‘my masterpiece’ as such, but I am quite pleased with ‘Captive Pegasus’ and ‘Captive Pegasus as a Barge Horse’. Have you any future plans for your work? Apart from continuing to do what I am doing, I am aiming to find the time to make some bespoke leather and bronze ‘dress’ collars for dogs. What advice would you give a local artist? Do the work, with all your might. The rest is secondary.

Food Review: Minnies Ice Cream CariAds Local Ltd can be very varied indeed. When I get a phone call from a local company asking if we’d like to review their homemade ice cream, it’s a no brainer – the Badham family love ice cream! Local lady, Camilla Lloyd has started up Minnies Ice Cream. She sources all her ingredients locally. Castle Greengrocers in Hay are a superb help as Camilla can adapt her recipes to what fruits are in season. As our regular readers know, Stuart is the man in the know on this. After a brief meeting with Camilla, I came away with four flavours of ice cream to try: Chocolate, Clotted Cream, Elderflower and Strawberry. So on a sunny afternoon Cariad, Grannie and I tucked in. The Clotted Cream was the richest of the four, very nice and creamy. The Chocolate flavour was super. And the Strawberry flavour had small bits of fruit which gave the ice cream a lovely texture. All were very good indeed but my favourite, Grannies too, had to be the Elderflower, it had a really fresh taste, slightly unusual but the taste buds certainly liked it! Cariad didn’t really have a leader, she was happy to go from pot to pot!

The Thoughts of a Greengrocer Having just had a few days off my thoughts are somewhat mixed. I could have done with a longer break but then, probably, we all could. Looking back over the last month the one thing that stands out is the ghastly weather over the Festival week. It caused problems for everyone and was such a shame when one thinks of the odd couple of fine days and how many more people came to town on those days and looked so much happier. Wet weather certainly does more than anything else to keep the crowds away from Hay.

that the Pembroke potatoes are now starting unfortunately for them I have had Herefordshire potatoes on the shelf for the last two weeks and will continue to use the local product. Apparently one of the reasons for the price falling is that there are less potatoes being used in Britain than used to be the case. This is possibly fashion in eating with more pasta, rice, couscous etc. being used. Next we must look forward to raspberries and then cherries - summer is a wonderful time! Article supplied by Sturat Pritchard, Castle Greengrocers.

Castle Greengrocers

Whilst I was away I looked into a French supermarket (one of the LeClerk brand - sort of a French Tesco) and found it most interesting. The bulk of the fruit and veg was much the same price as ours, just some of the fruit like Charentais melons being cheaper. It was very noticeable that they import the absolute minimum of produce and also that the local branch managers have the authority to buy genuinely local stuff. There is less fuss about regular sizes, shapes and colours but it is all good. The salad counter must be most expensive to buy and run as it has a system of blowing chilled air (possibly the smoky gas from dry ice) across the top of the lettuces. Other things were cheaper than in this country. The white goods (cookers, washing machines etc.) made me think that it is almost worth a visit to France when I need to replace anything.Wines are offered in profusion, 99% being French of all qualities from 2.5 euro per litre for standard domestic consumption (and cooking) up to hundreds of euros for fabulous burgundies and clarets. Only when I got home and looked more closely at the bill did I realise that the French use differing rates of VAT on alcohol. Like Britain, if you drink in a cafe or restaurant or bar the VAT is 20% - but if you buy wine from a shop and take it away to drink at home (or anywhere else) the VAT is set at 5%.

Jokes of the Month by Father & Son

(Colan & James Badham) A duck walks into a post office and asks the man behind the counter: ‘Do you have any corn?’ The man answers politely: ‘No, we don’t have any corn here.’ The next day, the duck enters again and asks: ‘Do you have any corn?’ Annoyed, the man answers: ‘No! We don’t have any corn.’ This goes on for a couple of days until finally, when the duck asks ‘Do you have any corn?’, the man gets so upset he yells: ‘NO! For the last time we don’t have any corn, and if you ask again I’ll nail your beak to the counter!’ The next day, the duck returns and asks: ‘Do you have any nails?’ The man answers: ‘No.’ Then the duck asks: ‘Do you have any corn?’

Wild in July

Protecting wildlife for the future

“I couldn’t believe it!” she said. “When the bride came out of church a hummingbird flew up to her bouquet”. I couldn’t believe it either and explained that hummingbirds do not occur wild in Britain and what she had seen was a moth. When a Hummingbird Hawkmoth hovers the wings are a blur and the long tongue probing into a flower can look like a bird’s bill. In Italy these moths are said to bring good tidings so I hope the marriage has been a happy one. Apart from a few which hibernate in south-west England, Hummingbird Hawkmoths are immigrants. Most arrive in August and September but warm southerly weather brings some here earlier. When I took this photo in Brecon on 12th June people elsewhere were reporting them and other migrant insects to www.atropos. info. They are not seen often in mid-Wales but worth looking for after this early start. Red Valerian shown here, Buddleia and Phlox are favourite nectar sources.

Hearing with a Personal Touch Having lost 70% of my hearing, I was very glad but unsure when I was introduced by a friend to Scott Wroe. Now a year later I can’t thank Scott enough for his excellent, kind and caring service. Without his professional help and advice my world would be a silent one instead I can now hear more than I ever expected and for that I am most grateful. Mrs S Smith The aids have given me a new lease of life and I can now hear on the telephone. My children and friends cannot get over the change in me. I wish I’d done this years ago Best wishes

Yours sincerely Eileen Hill Hearing loss can be a very daunting experience. Fortunately I was lucky enough to be recommended to Scott Wroe. With the highly skilled and sympathetic expertise of Scott Wroe I have come to terms with increasing deafness and learnt to combat the condition with expert modern technology. I am extremely grateful for all the help and up to date information I have received from this excellent firm Mrs J Thorpe Brilliant service in every respect.

A Tale of Two Helens In August 2013, local lady Helen Furnell, aged 51, had reached breaking point. She weighed nearly 21 stones, couldn’t walk up a slope without getting out of breath, had no energy at all and was suffering with depression. Helen knew she had to do something about this if she was to make old bones. “I just couldn’t go on any longer”, Helen says, “the quality of my life was non-existent. I couldn’t walk far, I was having trouble with my knee and of course I was suffering all the usual embarrassments that come with being grossly overweight, such as not being able to fit in chairs and even breaking them from time to time. The worst of it all was that I had done all this to myself. I had no respect for myself and was effectively abusing my own body.” Helen, who works at Richard Booth’s Bookshop, acknowledges the factors that led to her depression and low self-esteem. “Once I took responsibility for what I had become, I was ready to make things better.” She joined the local Slimming World Club which focuses on Food Optimising (a plan where certain foods are totally unlimited) with weekly group meetings where members celebrate

successes and provide support to each other through the more difficult times; she began to see results straightaway. “I was told I would eat lots of great food, never feel hungry and still lose weight. I’m not sure I believed it at first but the proof was there when I got on the scales.” Helen is well on her way to a healthy weight and a much healthier lifestyle. “My energy levels have shot through the roof, I feel more alert and much more able to deal with everyday pressures. And I’m much happier.” In addition to this Helen no longer takes anti-depressants, has reduced her blood pressure medication and is hoping to come off it altogether eventually. “News reports recently have stated that losing 10% of your body weight can make a huge difference to susceptibility to medical problems, such as diabetes.” Helen’s belief in this programme has led to her becoming the consultant of the Hay-on-Wye Slimming World Group from July 8th, where she is currently a member. Please see advert below for more details.

Gwenddwr Show is 60! All local roads will lead to Gwenddwr for our 60th annual Show on Saturday 26th July 2014. What exactly makes this Show so great? Is it the stunning, panoramic views, perched up in the hills above the Wye Valley near Erwood? Or its inclusive, friendly, fun, family, fab atmosphere? All this and more! It all began back in 1953 with a creative young school teacher Mrs Mair Thomas leading the children in a fancy dress procession from the village schoolroom out into the fields for fun, games and sports in celebration of lovely young Queen Elizabeth’s coronation. And yes, we’re still at it! Generations of local families (including quite a few of those ‘50s children!) will be getting together with visitors from further afield to contribute and compete fiercely for Gwenddwr Carnival, Show & Sports. It’s a modest community event but somehow becomes so much greater than the sum of its parts! So let’s light the candles and celebrate ... with those fabulously inventive fancy dress outfits (open to All Ages!), the football and races, the keenly contested classes for sheep, dogs, ponies, cookery, craft, flowers,

veg, turf, fleece, the children’s competitions, free bouncy castle, local stalls, tea and beer tents, wacky side shows!!! Experience the thrill of entering and competing for over 40 cups and trophies with over £1100 in Prize Money! Admission is £3 for Adults, FREE for children 16 & under. The Show begins at 2pm with the crowning of the Carnival Queen. Special 60th Celebration Party from 7pm with Hog Roast, Music & Dancing: tickets available in advance. For more Show info, find us on Facebook or ring 01982 560714 for a schedule. Everyone is welcome! Mrs Thomas presenting a trophy to the winner in 1993 with Lisa Marie Badham, aged 10 years old in a burger costume losing out to first prize!

Hay Baby “You may have heard that changes are afoot at Hay Baby; it’s true! I’m taking the business in a new direction and will be leaving The Pavement in early July.

y hay bacob .uk

I’ve really enjoyed setting up and running the shop for the last four years, have loved getting to know my customers and feel grateful to you all for your loyal support. However, the time has come, for me to return to my real love, making things, and I’m struggling to do this at the moment whilst dealing with the day-to-day running of a shop. I plan to spend most of the time in my new worskpace at home and will concentrate on developing more designs and selling Hay Baby goods online, on my own website and on Not On The High Street, the largest website set up for designer-makers and a great place to buy handmade presents. The other project I will be developing is SEW... the sewing workshops that I am running with Melanie Newton. I’ve found I really enjoy teaching and helping other people to make and mend things and we’ll be embarking on a range of courses and day workshops through the Autumn - watch this space! I hope you’ll keep in touch. You can find me through Hay Baby’s website: www.haybaby.co.uk by email: mail@haybaby.co.uk or the Hay Baby facebook page.

Bar with a difference....... Go to any wedding marquee in the local area within the next 18 months and chances are you’ll see a hand crafted, oak bar nestled in the corner.

we’ve got to mould ourselves to the event and be helpful if we can. I think organisers appreciate the extra effort”

The bar is one of many that belong to Malthouse Event Bars, a local business run by Hay based Jordan Curran and Aimie Lloyd.

The duo have won the contract to supply the bar at several local shows and most recently they organised and supplied the bar for the Brecknock YFC rally for over a thousand thirsty young farmers.

Aimie, who has a BA honours degree in Events management and worked in hospitality around the world, decided to start the business two years ago with Jordan; a carpenter with a degree in Design and Technology who designs and creates all the bars by his fair hands. Between them they have crafted a number of bespoke bars that blend in with any occasion, the pair admit the primary market for them is the wedding business, and are finding themselves popular with brides for their helpful and personalised approach, which Aimie explained: “Every wedding, show or festival is different, so

Hay Food Festival has been the latest event to showcase the business where Malthouse showed off their first ‘green’ bar, where all the products on sale are sourced within 100 miles of Hay which includes their own Malthouse Ale. Locals commented how it was nice to see a bar supplying solely local products and a change from the normal. If you are looking for a bar company willing to go that extra mile for you get in touch with Aimie & Jordan.

Chuck Out Tuesdays About five years ago I submitted an article about the idea of starting regular “Chuck Out Tuesdays” in an attempt to get rid of unwanted possessions to give to charity - and to help declutter our life. The original discussion in 2009 took place at Audrey and Glyn’s home. Their surnames are witheld so as to spare them any embarrassment! We were chatting about all the stuff we had collected and not let go of over the years. The syndrome known as “Getting around to it” stops us from actually doing something about it! So, the idea of starting to introduce a regular day to sort out some of our possessions came about. The conversation that ensued was along these lines, Glyn: “Well, you could chuck out some glasses”. Audrey: “But, we might have a party”. Glyn: “We never have parties and anyway - we have 50 glasses!” Glyn continued ...“What about all the bowls? We have far too many.” Audrey: “Well, we might break some.” Then Audrey thinks for a bit and said “What about all your old1960’s and 1970’s railway magazines?!” At this point we changed the conversation and agreed to sort out some possessions (of our own!) that we were happy(ish) to distribute to locally based charities. I did see Glyn a few days later and he said, with a twinkle in his eye, - “Marriage breaker!” Fast forward to 2014. So, here we are in no particular order:- Benefits include regular income for locally based charities. A feel good factor for “giving” and a relief at regularly decluttering ones life. Pitfalls (for me) are: acquiring more things, chucking out things one has bought in various charity shops and not always parting with your original possessions (True) and lastly, disagreeing with your spouse over what should, or shouldn’t, be given away! To conclude: It’s worth remembering charities are always grateful for your donations (large or small). The charities also state that they will recycle goods they cannot sell. Additionally, you can also raise money for yourself or charity (or, do a split) by joining the regular Wye Local Car Boot Sales. Good Luck and happy decluttering! Paul Hartley.

Penyrheol Chapel: Plans for the Future Readers of Wye Local will remember reading about the first ever Mally Fest – a concert in tribute to the late Mally Powell, a local musician and sheep farmer from Llanigon. 24 bands and DJs from our own local area and from London gave their time and talents to play to celebrate Mally’s life and music and to raise much needed funds for the Penyrheol Stable Renovation Appeal - a cause close to Mally and his family’s heart.

At present, the Stable Appeal stands at £45,000. Treasurer, Rosemary Vaughan, said “we await the outcome of grant applications made to Powys County Council, National Churches Trust and the Garfield Weston Foundation.

Friends and members of Penyrheol have plans to convert the dilapidated Stable alongside the Grade 2 listed Chapel into a kitchen, meeting room with accessible toilets for Chapel and community use. The views from Penyrheol in the foothills of the Black Mountains above Felindre are stunning and being on a public footpath, the Chapel receives many visitors and yet it is a most peaceful place.

Chrissie Outhwaite, Vice Chair, added “Sunday July 20th will be an opportunity to share memories of the life of the Chapel and also display plans for the future. Penyrheol will be open all day to welcome visitors and tea will be served between the afternoon and evening services as always”. If you are able to come along and take part in the Anniversary services with a hymn or sacred song, poem, meditation or play a musical instrument or wish to support Penyrheol with a gift, please get in touch with Penyrheol’s Secretary on 01874 711061 or email: penyrheolbaptistchapel@live.co.uk

Secretary, Janet Matthews, said “we are most grateful to all those friends and supporters of Penyrheol who made the first ever Mally Fest so successful.”

“We heard recently that our application to the Heritage Lottery Fund was turned down but we are determined to reach our goal. We need to raise a further £20,000 to turn our dreams into reality.”

Get to really know.......... It’s now three years since Talgarth Mill opened just before the screening of the BBC Village SOS programme that brought thousands of people flocking to Talgarth. We asked Gez Richards, Manager of the Mill a few questions to find out what’s gone on there since 2011. Name? Talgarth Mill. So what do you do at the Mill, Gez? Formally speaking I am the Manager of the Mill – but in practice that involves everything from welcoming coach parties to sweeping up after milling to working with the volunteers. Everything and anything that needs doing to keep a working Mill and tourist attraction open 6 days a week. Has the Mill got any other staff? I am part-time and we have one other part-timer – Liz Rose who is our Administrator / Girl Friday. So what happened with the money that the Big Lottery gave to the Mill? All of the Lottery funding went into the renovation of the 250 year old Mill building, creating the new café and bakery and, of course, rebuilding the water mill so that we could start milling again for the first time in over 70 years. The Lottery grant doesn’t cover the running of the Mill so we have to pay our own way day by day. Do we have to pay to go to the Mill if we live in Talgarth? The money we get from our guided Mill tours (all led by volunteers) is our single most import source of income. But Talgarth residents (and their children) can visit the Mill and the riverside gardens without charge if they join our new Local Membership scheme – but of course we’d far prefer them to come along as volunteers who contribute in some way! How many volunteers have you got? We have over 25 volunteers who literally keep the wheel turning at the Mill. These include volunteer Trustees, tour guides, Millers, flour baggers, gardeners, DIY enthusiasts and everything else you can think of! We heard you’ve got Board of Trustees, do they own the Mill? No - the Mill is owned by The Williams Family who have owned the Mill for generations. The Mill is leased to Felin Talgarth Mill Limited -

a community owned, not-forprofit organisation with members (not shareholders). Members are local residents and the governance of the company is overseen by the volunteer Trustees. Do you have to pay rent then? Yes we do. It is a peppercorn rent for the Mill but a commercial rent for the Mill Cottage. The rent is paid out of our trading income. How much flour have you milled since you opened? This will be our third year of milling so we will be getting very close to having milled 10 tonnes of grain – that is 10,000 1kg bags of flour! Does the Café use your flour in their bread? Yes the café uses the Mill flour for some but not all of their baking. The Mill can only produce wholemeal flour as we don’t have the equipment we need to take the bran out of the flour. At the moment we are milling wholemeal, rye, and spelt flour for the bakery. As far as possible we try to mill local grain and the current wheat has come just a few miles from Herefordshire. What do you think the Mill has done for Talgarth? The renovation of Talgarth Mill is just part of the wider efforts to regenerate Talgarth. But something is starting to happen: new shops are opening, the Mill alone had over 5,000 visitors last year – so yes I think Talgarth is moving in the right direction. Do I have to pay to go into the Mill if I want to go to the Café? Absolutely not. The café is open to everyone from 10.00am to 4.00pm six days a week (not Mondays). You don’t have to pay to go to the café – but the café is a great place to enjoy their award winning, locally sourced food after a tour! Why are you closed on Mondays? We are open Bank Holiday Mondays! But other Mondays we are closed so that we can do essential maintenance, plan future events, and allow the volunteers a well earned rest after a busy weekend!

Talgarth Flix in the Stix Special Performance Friday 4th July, including a Q&A Session with Welsh Poet, Author and Scriptwriter, Owen Sheers. Presented by the Talgarth and District Regeneration Group in Talgarth Town Hall, doors will open at 7.30pm for an 8pm screening. Cost £4 per person, or pizza and film ticket for £10 per person at The Bakers’ Table, 01874 711125 to book. Refreshments will be on sale in the Town Hall. Film runs for approximately an hour and a half. From rehearsal room to triumphant performance, Theatre of War follows the extraordinary theatrical production of ‘The Two Worlds of Charlie F’. Professional front line soldiers, all of whom have sustained injury ranging from amputation to post traumatic stress, join forces with a professional theatre company to help write, rehearse and perform a play based on their experiences of war in the killing fields of Afghanistan. What happened when they swapped the theatre of war for the London stage? A donation from the door takings will be made to an

appropriate charity. For more information call Bryan Craven, 01874 713166. Owen’s new play ‘Mametz’ in conjunction with the National Theatre of Wales runs until 5th July at Great Llancayo Upper Wood near Usk. Details and tickets can be found at www.nationaltheatrewales.org

News from

Bryngwyn Riding for the Disabled Group Thank you to all of you who have stepped up to get involved, and to those who have made donations to the group. Bag packing at the Co-op in Hay raised £459, and wider awareness of the group has brought four new volunteers. There have also been more requests for riding, with three or four sessions running on Saturdays. The Thursday session for adults is now up and running as well – spaces still available. We are also now the proud owners of a four wheeled carriage adapted for RDA driving. Once refurbished, this will provide an equine experience for individuals who are not able to mount a horse. 14 volunteers took part on 12 June in the first of a series of carriage driving training sessions to be held over the summer. With all this activity, regrettably we will not be holding our fete (planned for July) this year. Our next fundraising event will be the charity shop in Llandrindod Wells from 30th August to 6th September. We would welcome donated goods for the shop. Please deliver them to Bryngwyn Riding Centre or let us know if you have things that need to be collected.

Bike

F

Drover Cycles’ technicians are on hand to help you choose the right size bike for your child On your bike! 3 tips for getting kids into cycling. Want to get your kids into bikes? Check out Haybased Drover Cycles’ tips to make the going that bit easier on yourself and your budding Wiggo: 1. Balance bikes not stabilisers If anything, stabilisers encourage instability. Start with a balance bike from as young as two years old. When the time comes to move on to a bike with pedals, they’ll find it a cinch. 2. Be prepared to spend on a decent bicycle You’ll need to invest a bit of money in a bike your child enjoys pedalling. Look for a lightweight aluminium frame fitted with decent components. It’ll hold its value and you can always sell it on when it’s time to go up a size. 3. Size matters Don’t buy a bike that’s too big thinking your child will grow into it over several years - they won’t enjoy the ride. Get fitted properly with the help of experts. Drover Cycles stock the full range of Frog kids’ bikes, as well as BMXs and road and mountain bikes for children.Visit the website at www.drovercycles.co.uk

News from Gwernyfed High School

Funeral Directors

C.C.JAMES

As we draw towards the end of another academic year we enter a period of transition here at Gwernyfed High School. Our Year 13 students have come to the end of high school education and for many this will mark the end of a seven year chapter here at the school. From those nervous and excited footsteps entering Gwernyfed for the first time as a Year 7 pupil; they leave as mature, young adults ready to embark on a world full of opportunities. It is hoped that the school’s motto to ‘persevere’ will stay with them in whatever path they choose and we wish them all the very best for the future. Year 11 students have now finished their GCSE’s and are enjoying a well deserved holiday. We look forward to seeing them on results day to celebrate their achievements and to welcoming them back to join the Gwernyfed Sixth Form in September.

We will be welcoming Year 6 pupils from surrounding Primary Schools to come along to the transition days this month in preparation for joining the school in September. So, when the nervous and excited footsteps enter the school they will be starting their very own exciting chapter in their lives here at Gwernyfed High School.

News from Hay Castle Craig Pritchard Electrical Contractor

All aspects of electrics, Domestic, Commercial, Industrial. Inspecting and testing. Part p registered.

The Honesty Bookshop has been in operation since the mid-1980s, and started life as an ingenious way to deal with the mountains of surplus stock piling up at the old castle bookshop. These unwanted books had proved surprisingly resilient, resisting various attempts to burn and drown them, and costing a fortune in fees at the tip, until eventually the idea was hit upon for a bookshop with no overheads – outside, with no staff!

t. 01981500555 m. 07581094584 e. craigpritchard333@ymail.com Colebrook cottage, Bredwardine, Hereford, HR3 6BZ

Brian Wilding, who’s collected the money for the shop for nearly 20 years, said that people have always enjoyed browsing the strange mixture of books, often buying something a bit odd for an entertaining read over coffee or while on holiday. Rumour has it that the odd treasure has slipped through the net over the years too, including a first edition of A. A. Milne’s Winnie-the-Pooh, missing only a couple of pages! Little has changed in the last three decades with the suggested donation for a paperback still just 50p. In 2012, a grant from Brecon Beacons National Park enabled a beautiful oak shelter with a slate roof to be built to finally keep the books out of the rain. If you would like to join our wonderful bookshop volunteers, please email: volunteer@haycastletrust.org All donations received via the Honesty Bookshop go to support the restoration of Hay Castle.

In 2013 a national computer programme upgrade began across the NHS in Wales, with all GP practices having to adopt new and improved clinical systems. Haygarth Doctors will be having our new clinical system installed during July, and will go live on the 30th July 2014. During the week beginning 28th July there will be disruption to normal services, but we are already working hard to ensure a smooth transition. The surgery will remain OPEN for urgent problems, but routine services will be minimal. REPEAT MEDICATION weeks beginning 21st & 28th July - Please order by 10th July to ensure your medication will be ready for collection, or your prescription available to take to the pharmacy. Medication will be ready for collection on normal collection dates. The local pharmacies will be working with us to ensure that services will not be disrupted for patients; however we advise all patients to ensure they have adequate supplies of their usual medication over the transition period. Patients currently using PATIENT ACCESS our internet system should note that this service will be unavailable from Wednesday 23rd July. Information detailing the changes to patient access can be found on the practice website or alternatively through the surgery.

News from Hay Town Council

small farms Organically produced meat

Having just finished my year as Mayor of Hay, Fiona now holds the chain. May I say that it has been an honour and privilege to serve our community. As you know it has not been all plain sailing with high and low points. The royal visit last May of the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall being the most notable high, the sad passing of fellow Councillor Peter Lloyd being the lowest. I take this opportunity to thank all Councillors for their hard work, perseverance and patience during my tenure and congratulate them on their achievements, the Woodland Management Group and the social media connections being examples. Special mention also for our clerk Nigel for keeping me grounded. We have many other projects presently in hand foremost of these being the Town Plan now being worked up and consulted upon not forgetting the ongoing saga of public conveniences. Finally, concern has been raised with regard to rubbish being dumped from gardens onto the embankments of the Railway Line and dogs being allowed to foul without cleaning up. I would ask that residents neighbouring the Line help the Woodland Management Group in keeping this beautiful area tidy. Cllr Robert Golesworthy.

It is now officially

Summer BBQ`s at the ready! Beef burgers and steaks off our organic cattle. Lamb burgers, minted lamb chops and kebabs. A range of different flavoured sausages as well as BBQ pork ribs off our free range pork.

We also marinade chicken in hot and spicy, Chinese, tandoori or tikka flavours.

We now attend the produce market every other Saturday in the cheese market, dates are

July 5th,19th & August 2nd,16th,30th. Mutton is now available.

News from Timbuktu We’ve been making the most of the busy Festival season and raising funds for education and medical projects. ‘The ever popular Africa Day raised a whopping £1100 to support the work of Medics4Timbuktu. Our street collections and tickets sales from the Toumani and Diabate concert raised over £600 which will be used to support education projects. We’re delighted to have received a grant from IBM which we hope will fund laptops to send to schools in Timbuktu. When the teachers visited last year, they said that computers and technology would be top of their wish list. Reliable computers should also improve our communications with Timbuktu. Despite the more stable situation there, telephone and email correspondence are still a challenge. The medics group are busy expanding their antenatal support, providing vitamins and health checks to other areas of Timbuktu. The Girls in Schools project is proceeding well and the Waterloo Foundation have confirmed funding for 2015. Pupils are also now learning English via the English Speaking Union and we hope to link them with Gwernyfed School when their language skills have improved. Find out more at: hay2timbuktu.org.uk.
