Talgarth Flood Scheme

RIAD TO RENT IN MARRAKECH Riad Laarouss is a well-known and friendly neighbourhood in Marrakech, close to the souks (markets) and the famous central square of Djemma el Fna. Powys County Council are currently developing proposals upon the last phase of the river Ennig flood scheme. The Council will be holding a public drop-in session to obtain views and comments upon their proposals and to discuss aspects of future flood risk management. The drop-in session will take place in Talgarth Town Hall on Thursday 7th August between 4pm and 7pm.

News from Talgarth by Cllr. William Powell Powys County Councillor for Talgarth Over the past month or so we have been blessed with warm temperatures and glorious sunshine which has given our visitor economy a welcome summer boost. It has also enabled our farmers to make progress with their hay and silage harvest, allowing them and their families to get out and support local agricultural shows, large and small, which are such an important networking opportunity for those who make their living from the land. We should not forget that our own Brecon County Show, which falls every year on the first Saturday in August, is the longest established in Great Britain and first took place in 1755. Our schools have only recently broken up for the summer holidays and it was my pleasure recently to attend both Talgarth School Sports Day and the Leavers’ Assembly in Talgarth Town Hall. Both were genuinely happy community occasions - and a credit to the pupils and parents of the school, as well as to Mrs Jones, Miss Toone and the whole staff team. It is a testimony to the regard in which the school is held that the Leavers’ Assembly was a total sell out at both 2:00pm and 6:00pm. After the second sitting, it was also remarkable to see how long pupils, parents and friends stayed chatting and laughing. It is indicative of the family atmosphere that makes the school so special. In the last week or so of the National Assembly Term, I had the chance to catch up with some very impressive young people from Talgarth, whose business brought them to Cardiff Bay. Firstly, Lucia Jones, Head Girl of my old school, Gwernyfed and member of Funky Dragon, the Welsh Youth Parliament, came to see me as part of a mass lobby of the Assembly to try to safeguard the future of Funky Dragon. This followed the Welsh Government’s termination of its funding. I was struck

by the arguments Lucia and her colleagues presented so articulately - and will do my utmost to campaign to see the funding restored. Secondly, I was able to meet and congratulate Holly Pavey on the occasion of her graduation ceremony at the Wales Millennium Centre. It was a proud moment for Holly, her parents, grandparents and friends - and I was delighted to have been able to share just a little of that special celebration. As some Wye Local readers will know, I was cited in recent media coverage following the attempt by the former Welsh Government Environment Minister Alun Davies AM to obtain private information on EU farm subsidy payments received by a selection of Opposition Assembly Members. I have been positively moved by local people’s reaction to this - as well as to an ill informed, anonymous letter recently planted in the local press on this and related issues. Our community really is one of the best. I hope to see many of you out and about at local events in the coming weeks. I am especially looking forward to this year’s Talgarth Festival of the Black Mountains, which is as always on the August Bank Holiday weekend. News from Glasbury Ward by Chris Davies Powys County Councillor for Glasbury It has certainly been a very busy time over the past few weeks, with our schools coming to a close for the summer holidays and lots of Sports Days and Fetes to enjoy. Both Hay and Clyro Primary Schools enjoyed tremendous support at their Fairs with two very well run events. Our communities have however witnessed the closure of several of our local schools over the past couple of years and in recent weeks Llanigon was added to that list. Each school closed is a great loss to the fabric that binds our area together; Nevertheless our rural communities continue to show enormous resolve under such circumstances. You can be assured that I am consistently pushing the cabinet member responsible for schools at Powys CC to ensure that our new schools at Clyro and Hay are delivered to us and delivered on time! In Llowes the Open Gardens day in aid of The Royal Welsh Radnorshire Appeal and St Meilogs Church proved to be outstanding and if you missed the excellent Felindre Village Fate, you certainly lost out as

there was so much to do and see and I hope that this new event will become a firm fixture on the summer calendar. If you have not yet had the opportunity of visiting the former chapel in Glasbury which is now part of the River Café complex, I suggest you do. Congratulations must go to Jane and her team on an outstanding conversion and an excellent addition to the area’s amenities here in this lovely part of the Wye Valley. Don’t forget the following events taking place in August. They include Painscastle Village Fete on Sunday 24th; Glasbury Village Duck Race on Saturday 30th; Llanigon YFC Show on Sat 9th; Not to mention Llyswen & Boughrood Show on Saturday 16th where I have the great honour of being this year’s President. Gardening Column

Lavender Well known for exquisite scent and relaxing properties, growing your own lavender will offer you a colorful summer flowering evergreen shrub that you can harvest and also enjoy in your home. Lavender is easy to grow, producing masses of beautifully scented flowers above green or silverygrey foliage during the summer months. This drought tolerant plant thrives in a sunny border, container, herb or gravel gardens. Plant in a well-drained soil in a position with good air circulation and full sun. To improve drainage you can add sand to the soil before planting and adding bone meal will make your lavender stronger and more winter hardy. Harvest lavender at any time by cutting them from the plant but avoid clipping more than every third stem to keep the plant looking full. Harvest just before the flowers entirely open and flowers will keep their perfume for months. To dry flowers, gather a bunch of stems and hang them upside-down in a dark, wellventilated place to preserve colour and keep the stems from becoming mouldy. The lavender flowers produced by your plant have a diverse range of uses. Fresh flowers may be used in sauces, marinades and desserts. Handle fragile dried blossoms with care and use them in teas, salts, potpourri, sachets and crafts. Lavenders can become woody and leggy if not pruned regularly. This is best done after flowering in the autumn by removing flower stalks at their base. Lavenders can also be lightly pruned in the spring to tidy them up and remove any winter damage, but avoid cutting into brown woody growth.

Sleep your way to the top! Do you ever have ‘bad tummy’ days? Your belly might feel swollen, uncomfortable or full! Or do you have times where your productivity is seriously ‘underfiring’? Has your joi de vivre deserted you lately? It’s maybe time to re-evaluate your sleep patterns here, as a lack of sleep, seen by some as a bonus, as they’ll ‘get more done’ (and we’re all guilty of it), can have serious ramifications.Try doing a cross word after a rubbish night and see where it gets you! A bad nights sleep will raise cortisol levels as the body is stressed. Cortisol reduces muscle mass and raises belly fat – you might even notice this as a day to day paradigm. Long term. less than 6 hours sleep leads to a 30% rise in obesity levels. (yes you read that right)! Adequate sleep should be a standard part of weight loss programs. You’ll also observe the day after a bad night you’re less able to see the ‘big picture’, feel less inspired and creative, and may feel decidedly anti-social! You get so used to it there’s a point in sleep deprivation when we lose touch with

how impaired we are. Memory will also suffer. Have you noticed that you’ll feel like you have a hang-over after a short night? (and while we’re on the subject, alcohol will affect you adversely as you may feel like you sleep deep, but it’s actually a stimulant so you sleep light! Getting 7.5 – 8 hours a night, is optimum, and remember: “every hour before midnight’s worth two after”! If not: Siestas are good! Naps (if you can get them) are the perfect refresher but there are some criteria; 10 – 15 mins MAX or you’ll go into a deep sleep that’s very hard to wake up from. This time period is perfect as you’ll wake fresh, with no grogginess. That afternoon you’ll find cognitive function way improved (all bosses should approve for a potent work force!). Keep on drawing … when you are on the phone keep scrap paper and a pen on the desk, and if it’s going to be a long call, switch the phone to the other ear and get doodling .. the intellectual side of the brain is then concentrating on the call, not on what your hand is doing. This throws up some new and interesting ideas. Always take a sketch pad around with you, and a stick of graphite. What other local artists do you admire? Oh, there are so many incredibly talented people in this area .. but if I have to single out just a handful .. Anthea Stilwell, Julienne Braham, Lois Hopwood. How long have you been an artist? I have painted on and off all my days, but started in earnest in 1999. It took many years to feel confident enough to call myself an artist. Where did you train or gain experience? Experience gained by observation, application, trial and error; no formal training. I used to garden and grow and sell hardy perennials by day then come home and paint at night. What has been your proudest moment? Perhaps having my first museum show .. the Radnorshire Museum, Llandrindod Wells in 2008. I get a lot of satisfaction from curating work I’ve been involved with for various charities (MacMillan, Maggies, St Michael’s Hospice, The Cart Shed) .. it is good to work as a team to raise funds and awareness for a good cause.. it can be hectic, but the curation work lends an interesting balance to painter’s solitary life. What would you class as ‘your masterpiece’? I think I have yet to produce that one. Perhaps there are two strands that have stood out - the Blue Horse series, and the Close of Day series in earth

The Thoughts of a Greengrocer Sitting in bright sunshine writing this it is hard to believe that not long ago we went through the Hay Festival with persistent rain. Since then it has been fine weather all the way. This has brought the crops on well, and with the mild winter weather giving them an early start things have been very early this year. All the beans are doing very well along with spring and summer cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli - even some purple sprouting is about and this only half way through July. Soft fruit is good, loads of raspberries, glorious cherries and second crop strawberries just getting under way. The last of the first crop strawberries were not quite up to scratch but don’t let that put you off the new crop. Local new potatoes have been on sale for over a month and are still delicious and I saw in the wholesale market the first of the new season’s chipping potatoes are ready. This is a relief as the remains of last year’s crop have been very problematical. For those of you who make jams etc. I recommend that you don’t leave your fruit buying too late this year as the early start to the season usually means an early finish. As well as the homegrown fruit the peaches and nectarines are now coming well and are not expensive (around 30p each). This price leaves little for the producer as the fruit has to be driven from the south of Spain and Italy across Europe and then as far as Birmingham. Something a little more unusual - I have been offered locally grown kiwi fruit; one never knows what will come through the door that is interesting or unexpected. By the time this magazine is published local plums will be on the shelf, along with, I hope, damsons and greengages. Before the end of August we should have local apples which is great, only it is also the forerunner of autumn.

Wild in August

Protecting wildlife for the future

The Lapwing has more names than any other British bird, some from its broad wings and distinctive way of flying. Others such as Peewit and Peasiewheep mimic its calls, the Welsh Cornchwiglen and Cornish Horneywink stem from its curved crest, and Green Plover reflects the glossy sheen on its black feathers. The many names show this was once a very common and familiar bird. Its eggs were a delicacy for the rich and a source of basic food or income for the common people. Adult birds were shot and netted in great numbers. Mrs.Beeton wrote that the London market was â&#x20AC;&#x153;sometimes so much glutted with them that they are sold very cheapâ&#x20AC;?. But the British breeding population has fallen by more than 50% in the last 25 years. In Breconshire the decline goes back at least to the 1920s, and recently fell from an estimated 220 pairs in 1990 to fewer than 20 in 2012. Modern farmland is generally unsuitable for Lapwings to nest.

Herbal baths Adding herbs to your baths or facial steam baths is super-easy and great for relaxing, healing and recharging. The simplest way is to make an infusion of herbs and allow it to stand for 20-30 minutes. To make an infusion pour boiling water over the herbs, cover and allow to stand, then strain.

Boughrood Harness Races Sunday 17th August

Boughrood Court Farm will be the picturesque venue on Sunday 17th August for our harness racing fixture. With over 130 horses attending from all over the UK the competition will be fierce. Local hopes lie with committee member and top trainer in Wales and West David Bevan. David is enjoying a good season with regular winners and a big final win at the Tregaron Spring meeting. Other local trainers to look out for include Rhys Evans and last years top owner Roy Sheedy. The Boughrood Classic final will be the one everyone wants to win and with 5 competitive heats just qualifying for the £2000 final will be difficult. The local trainers will not have it all their own way, as good prize money and a good track will encourage trainers from further afield. Brother and Sister Alan & Pam Haythornwaite will hope their luck will continue after winning the Boughrood Classic final with Charlie Pan last year. The Boughrood FFA has added money and boosts £1000 to the winner, with a select field of top horses you can ensure the pace will be furious. Hay Hotfooters celebrate 10 years! Olympic grade times just weren’t coming to me so the decision was, do I join a running club or not? Experience had warned me that some clubs are ultra-competitive where membership involves arm-twisting into competing in events, but after a quick whizz round some runners forums I looked at the Hay Hotfooters were a friendly bunch who welcomed all and where everyone, no matter what ability, ran together. At first this thought terrified me, how would I keep up with the speedy folk? But no need to worry, the speedy ones run on then do a collie-like loop back to pick up those enjoying the view from the back. I took the plunge and joined. Local gym owner Cat Lawford and a group of dedicated runners from the area had established the Hay Hotfooters in 2004 and very quickly any concerns I had were banished and I was a regular attendee, helping with the Magic Roundabout, a 10Km off road race on the Begwns. The relaxed atmosphere of the club meant that those who wanted to take part in events could, but if this wasn’t for you, there was no pressure. There was, though, an added incentive to go to events; they were usually followed by a much-deserved slap-up

lunch in a local hostelry! I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with the Hotfooters. I have, with some gusto though not necessarily success, taken the leap into events. And have not only enjoyed the support of other club members, but I’ve also enjoyed supporting them, whether it’s from the side-lines at local events such as Mudrunner, Man v Horse or the cross-country leagues or keeping track of members further afield, crossing the deserts of Morocco or in the mountains of Nepal. Many of the original members are still involved with the club, and we’ve also branched out into a second annual race, the Hay Hillraiser, a cheeky 11 mile road run, taking in the delights of Hay, Llanigon and the base of Hay Bluff. The club has also acquired a reputation for the post run teas that are provided to competitors, a better selection of cakes you will struggle to find! So, am I glad I took the plunge? Absolutely! Will Lewis started out as an archaeologist and then trained as a professional photographer. 39A Bus is Going Bust! 39A is the Sunday bus service which runs between Brecon and Hereford, travelling via Hay and Talgarth. The service is due to be scrapped in September due to shrinking budgets at Powys and Herefordshire County Councils. Currently the bus service is subsidised to the tune of £14,000 a year. This may sounds like a lot of money but it’s a small price to pay for maintaining a vital public transport link between our communities. The bus also keeps the tills ringing in local shops and cafes. The 39a carried well over 3000 passengers in the year 2012-13. Research suggests that the average spend per head for bus passengers on a “day out” in this region is £38. So every £1 of subsidy could bring up to £8 of revenue into the area. Losing the bus service could have a serious impact on Sunday traders in towns and communities along the route.

A lack of public transport on Sundays would leave car-less visitors stranded. Llandefalle Brecknock YFC held a Community Project Weekend on the weekend of June 28th following a challenge set by Kate Miles, Wales YFC Chairman for counties to focus more on community work. The Community Project Day saw each of the 13 clubs in the county carry out different events within their area. The events were as follows: • Beulah YFC held a “Blooming Great Tea Party” in aid of Marie Curie • Builth YFC held a mini concert with tea and cake at Brynhyfred Care Home. • Bwlch & Crickhowell YFC held a Community Village Treasure Hunt followed by a BBQ • Erwood YFC held a coffee morning and a “cash for clothes” • Libanus YFC got together to clean and weed the local area • Llandefalle YFC helped their community by cleaning the local hall. • Llanigon YFC held a litter pick • Pontfaen YFC tidied the church yard • Sennybridge YFC joint with Trecastle YFC and cleaned the local recycling area. • Talgarth YFC held a litter pick • Troedrhiwdalar YFC cleaned up the local church yard • Ystradfellte YFC did a litter pick. News from Bronllys Hospital & Community League of Friends The League of Friends have been busy working in the Ward and Day Hospital Gardens. Hard work had gone into clearing weeds - not always easy as some were well established. We are grateful to Kevin Harley for spending many hours weeding the circular heather/flower bed in front of main hospital entrance - the improvement was immediately commented on. Thanks to several donations we have been able to purchase bedding plants and items to put in the gardens. These include a feature bird bath, bird feeding station, small bird baths and new patio furniture. It is nice to see many people making use of the gardens. One comment about the Day Hospital garden has been - “you have transformed a jungle into a lovely garden”. We are still working on the ward garden but we are getting there. Our thanks also go to Maintenance for their support and encouragement. We have recently created another Honorary Member. It is a lovely black pug called Jack. He was made a member for canine services to the Ward and Day Hospital. He

has transformed patient’s lives. His owner received the certificate - and Jack received the dog biscuits! We continue to work to safeguard the future of the hospital. We are pleased to say that along with all the other hospitals we are now included in the LHB three year plan and we will work to ensure we are in the next plan in three years time. We have received many donations already this year and we have already received more money than in any other year. This means we are able to support projects that will provide better care of patients. We have also been able to support the Mental Health Ward and provide computer and soft furnishing to make a peaceful and relaxing space. Remember that the Car Boot Sale in Talgarth is on the 1st Saturday of the month. 8.00am start. Many thanks again to all of you who give us such valuable support. News from Fairtrade Hay It’s an important time for Fairtrade Hay as we’re renewing our status as a Fairtrade town. This involves producing an action plan stating our intended activities for the next two years. We plan to make sure that all the local institutions – from the Council to B&Bs - are using as many Fairtrade products as possible. So if you’re not already, please switch to Fairtrade at your next shop or supplier review. It’s so important to pay farmers a fair wage and support the development of their communities. We’ll have a stall at the community day in the Buttermarket on 16th August. You can find out more about our work there, and buy some fair trade products. These include accessories made by the Zabeleen people in Egypt who collect from rubbish tips and create beautiful things. We enjoyed serving teas at Montpelier Cottage open day and raised over £100 which will buy Shared Interest shares. These will support small producers dedicated to fairer trade. We’re happy to serve Fairtrade teas at community events so if you’re planning anything let us know! Please continue to support Fairtrade so that Hay can retain its Fairtrade town status. Powys County Council Chief Executive, Jeremy Patterson, came to shadow the kitchen staff at Gwernyfed High School; one of the busiest school kitchens in Powys. Mr Patterson helped in all areas of the kitchen, from peeling the potatoes and baking cookies to moving the furniture and serving the pupils. The day started at 8.30am when a brief induction took place and then Mr Patterson went to Clifford Primary School to deliver their lunches. It was then back to serve the pupils of Gwernyfed High School in a busy lunch hour. Sue Georgopoulos, Cook in Charge, said ‘It has been good. I was very apprehensive to start off but he has blended in well and has got on well with the girls. It has been good’ Mr Jeremy Patterson had this to say about his visit ‘I have learnt an awful lot and I think it is important that someone like me should come out and not just look at people working in this environment but take part too. They have been very nice to me’.

News from Hay History Group has started this new column to keep you up-to-date with our activities. We kick off with news of Hay History Weekend 5th-7th September. The theme is Wartime Hay and we remember Hay on the centenary of WWI and 75 years since WWII. A full programme of activities opens with a film screening of Resistance, based on Owen Sheers book, set in the Olchon Valley in the 1940s. The following day Nic Howes will lead a Resistance walk, stopping afterwards at White Haywood Farm Restaurant. A poster trail around town will reveal what many of the towns’ main buildings were used for during WWI & WWII. Hay Castle will hold an Open Day on Saturday 6th September and the Ice House (aka Poetry Bookshop) will open their doors for viewings. Meanwhile, winners of the Wild Wye Web, railway short-story competition will be revealed, to celebrate 150 years since Hay Railway opened. On Sunday 7th Chris Hunter will lead a War Memorial walk, to remember Hays’ soldiers from WWI to the present and the Pop-up Museum returns to the Parish Hall. Everyone is invited to bring along family treasures, or items from Hays’ past, especially war medals and memorabilia. There will also be a vintage tearoom and stalls. The weekend concludes with an historic pub-crawl.

News from Hay Town Council A Town Plan For Hay-On-Wye Most people regard Hay-on-Wye as unique. Whether it’s the bookshops or the beautiful countryside that surrounds the town there is an attractiveness about the place that is hard to define. At least that is the view of Hay Town Council and, it is believed, the vast majority of the residents. However, although it may not be obvious to the casual visitor, the town is under attack. An attack of the subtle, creeping kind.

The first step will be to talk to local groups and organisations to find out the key issues and this will be followed by a wider consultation involving residents and businesses. Local services and facilities that were once taken for granted are now under rigorous scrutiny by the local authority. Nothing will escape the eye of those looking to balance the budget. Public toilets might be first on the list but other facilities are suitable cases for similar treatment; for example, playing fields and play areas, the library etc, etc. All these (and others) are candidates for transfer to Hay Town Council, or they might disappear forever, and all this in a town which is lacking in many modern amenities already. The Town Council maintains that all these facilities are essential to the future development of Hay – not just as a tourist town, important though that is, but also to improve the town for the benefit of the residents. Maintaining these facilities is only a part, of equal importance are many other areas which also need to be considered and improved: affordable housing, good quality employment opportunities, commercial development, work based vocational training and recreational facilities for young people etc. to mention a just a few. To achieve this, which is a big task, we need a plan of action involving everybody in the town. This is essential and so are the resources and funding to make it happen. In conjunction with the Brecon Beacons National Park Authority (BBNPA) Hay-on-Wye has been selected as a pilot community to develop a Town Plan. It is hoped that this plan will eventually be adopted by the National Park Authority for use in the determination of planning applications in Hay. Powys County Council are on board with the project and everyone who lives and works in Hay will have the opportunity to have their say
