I often think to myself would I have set up the Wye Local if I hadn’t had my apprenticeship with Freestyle Print Shop, Brecon back in 1999. You make your own journey in life, but having that first opportunity entered me into the world of design and print. What would I be doing now if I had started off on a different path I wonder? That’s why I am chuffed to now have created an apprentice position right here at CariAds Local Ltd. Nicole Williams is a local lass just like me, being born and bred in Hay, with her family all living and working locally, and also being a Gwernyfed High School student. Since Nicole has started she has been out delivering our 2015 Local Landscapes Calendar, been in contact with our what’s on listing advertisers and slowly but surely she is getting my paper work in order! Already I can see she is going to be an invaluable part of the team. Please take a look at our Christmas section within this issue, Christmas Shopping kicks off on page 24, and our Christmas Parties start on page 30. Be an early bird and get organised. Thank you to all that supported our Car Boots this year. We have a lot to think about for the 2015 season, wet weather was a huge disappointment for us this year. Once we have a plan of action and dates decided, we will be sure to inform you early next year. Happy Halloween everyone – if you’d like to get in the spirit, please join us at Hay Castle on Saturday 25th October, Gwernyfed Geckos Netball Team have organised a super duper Halloween party, which I proud to be part of. Enjoy, Lisa Marie x (Photo above: Cariad & Lisa Marie Badham)

News from Talgarth by Cllr. William Powell Powys County Councillor for Talgarth In the last couple of weeks we have seen the final burst of a truly vintage summer but with the children back in school, the mornings distinctly chilly and the evenings lengthening, the colours of autumn are now quietly asserting themselves. The Bank Holiday weekend and its bright sunshine seems an age away and the Talgarth Festival team has already held its debrief session, to reflect upon what was best about this year’s event - and what can be done to make it even better for the future. Anyone who would like more information on how to get involved should contact the Festival Chairman Tony James on (01874) 711289.

On other fronts, however, there have been some real disappointments in recent weeks. The decision by The Royal Bank of Scotland to close our National Westminster Bank is a hammer blow to Talgarth. I have secured a meeting on 3rd October with senior Nat West manager Rhian Head and will be emphasising to her our grave concerns. The closure, if it does go ahead, will especially hit the elderly, those without transport and indeed the local business community. In my view, it reflects an abandonment by the banking sector of our rural communities. It also comes after two decades of under investment in the branch locally - which has left it lagging behind in terms of technology and the very fabric of the building.

And staying with the theme of volunteering, it was my privilege to attend the Powys Volunteer of the Year Awards ceremony at The Metropole Hotel in Llandrindod Wells just last week, organised by Powys Association of Voluntary Organisations (PAVO). It was humbling to hear stories of selfless volunteering by people and groups the length and breadth of our county. However, the culmination of the evening for me was the Outstanding Achievement Award for voluntary work in the community, gained by our very own Talgarth Luncheon Club. When I nominated the team back in the summer, I was optimistic that their work would be recognised. The Outstanding Achievement Award is the highest accolade of all and it is richly deserved by Cynthia Argent, Margaret Kite and the entire team. We can be justly proud of them and their achievements - and on the fourth anniversary of his passing, I am sure that Lord Richard Livsey, always a loyal supporter and patron of Talgarth Luncheon Club, would have been too. The flower baskets that have graced Talgarth Town Centre all summer would also have gladdened his heart – all credit to those whose dedication has made it possible.

Similarly, Powys County Council recently confirmed that the replacement primary schools earmarked for Bronllys/Talgarth, Clyro and Hay on Wye are behind schedule - and now have a completion date of 2017. This is a genuine setback, not just for the communities affected, but especially for those who work and study in the current substandard buildings. I shall be working with fellow County Councillors and Governors to ensure that the revised timetable is adhered to - as the whole credibility of the Twenty First Century Schools Programme locally is at stake. In the meantime, if there is anything that I could help you with, please don’t hesitate to contact me on 07703 112113 or by email: william.powell@wales. gov.uk Alternatively, please come along to my next advice surgery on Friday, 3rd October from 5:00pm at Talgarth TiRC. You can also pop into the TiRC at any time to request a call on any issue that is troubling you. Best wishes William

News from Glasbury Ward by Chris Davies Powys County Councillor for Glasbury It’s hard to believe that we are already in October and Autumn is now in full swing. The Harvest Festivals in our local churches and schools help us remember just how important agriculture is to our area and to our rural economy. As I go around our communities I still hear a great deal of concern about the changes to the Homecare Services within Powys. This matter is something that I am paying particular attention to and I would be grateful to hear from people who have had experience of the changeover from good local companies to the present arrangement. It appears that the public convenience issue is once again back on the agenda for cabinet at Powys County Council and I understand that local community councils and groups will be spoken to in the near future. This of course will affect our building in Glasbury and surrounding Towns. It is also very concerning to hear that the local school plans for our area have been delayed by a further 12 months. We are now in desperate need of the new

and improved community facilities. I look forward to reporting in further detail in the months ahead. Many thanks must go to all those involved in running recent local community events including the Glasbury Play Park team for all their hard work in organising the Annual Duck Race and BBQ on the Bont, together with the Hay Fire-fighters for all their help. Congratulations also go to the Painscastle Village Hall Committee for organising a superb Village Fate, they also went on to put together a great welcome to the Tour of Britain when the race came through the valley. Please remember to support the MacMillan Coffee Mornings that are about to take place ‘in a village near you!’ They are many and varied but all are for a great cause!! Contact me on any matter: 07855 752110 or cllr. chris.davies@powys.gov.uk Best wishes Chris

Gardening Column

Skimmia A compact evergreen shrub with glossy, dark green leaves producing small, scented flowers in spring, followed by shiny red berries on fertilised female plants. Generally from the Himalayas and the Far East these shrubs are compact, low-maintenance and will cheer up any garden. Their compact nature means that they are unlikely to outgrow an area. Skimmias are totally hardy and will grow in conditions from full sun to shade. The flower buds, which appear in autumn and winter, are a prominent feature of the plant, as are the scented flowers which open in spring. It is perfect for growing in containers providing good all year round colour and in borders where their evergreen foliage provides structure. Plant now in a fertile soil that is neutral to acid or use ericaceous compost in pots. Mix in lots of organic matter to encourage strong, healthy growth. The variety ‘Rubella’ has an RHS ‘Award of Garden Merit’, which is for plants of outstanding excellence. Although a male shrub, meaning no berries are produced, the red-margined, deep green leaves and dark red flower buds produced in autumn certainly make up for that. These buds last through the winter until the flowers open in spring, meaning all year round interest in the garden. Other varieties such as ‘Temptation’ and ‘Reevsiana’ are self-fertile and will produce berries even if there is only one plant in your garden! Article supplied by The Old Railway Line, Three Cocks

Self-Sabotage! Are your intentions always there in terms of fitness and health, but for reasons you cannot fathom, you fall spectacularly off the wagon? We all do it, many times, and I’ve done it too. Often as not you’ll be succumbing to an addiction: to sugar, comfort eating or alcohol. When that happens we need to dust ourselves down and get right back on the wagon again, ready to ‘recover’. But what are we actually trying to achieve? Why do we do it? We know addictions are suppressive - numbing us to underlying pain. When we do recover, and tackle our demons it’ll last as long as we’re ‘strong’ – then with a little setback, the entire cycle can start again. We surely need to discover our true selves. Seeing what we really need and what messages we really give to ourselves when we (as I call it) ‘give ourselves permission to fail’. Again! As we uncover and feel again, ride through the rawness and

pain, express ourselves verbally rather than through our bodies (notice how you get more into our MINDS as we get older!?) – and be kind to ourselves, we regain our authenticity and put our stamp on the world again, with no crutches necessary. If you were to give up heroin or other hard drugs you’d get all the support in the world yet with food and drink addictions you can be totally alone. So get all the support you can – from whatever sources you can, and make more of a change than ‘just’ aiming to lose weight and follow someone else’s protocol which is often faulty in any event – who would eat ‘diet coke chicken’ (given as a recipe – perleease) - or give up tasty foods for ‘fat free’, additive riddled food - when you can take responsibility and gain true control having put your real demons behind you for ever! Local Talent: Mari Fforde Artist Name? Mari Fforde. Type of Artist? Photography and mixed media boxes. Range of Products? Framed photography and hand made art boxes - from matchbox to desk drawer. Where can your products be purchased? The Old Electric Shop in Hay on Wye. Price range? £25 - £500. How long have you been an artist? I have taken photographs since my grandfather gave me a camera when I was 9. I took it up as a profession in 2000 when I moved back to Wales. The boxes are a new venture, inspired by a course I attended at Arts Alive, Crickhowell with artist Becky Adams. Where did you train or gain experience? Strangely enough I have a History degree. I worked in the film industry after my degree, starting in the Art Department, then becoming an Assistant Director and then finally a Production Coordinator in commercials - so it was a varied career! I also attended Hereford Art College to do a HND Photography course back in 2003. I then started getting photography work with the Brecon Beacons Park Authority and clients like Gliffaes Hotel and Cosy Under Canvas. What has been your proudest moment? With my photography I was selected as part of an emerging talent exhibition in Oriel Davies, Newtown. I exhibited my “Borders” exhibition in Theatr Brycheiniog and The Courtyard, Hereford which was an achievement. I also appear very briefly as a dancer in “Shakespeare in Love” which I am very proud of - blink and you’ll miss me!

What would you class as ‘your masterpiece’? Haven’t got that far yet. Call back in 20 years time. Have you any future plans for your work? I would love to spend more time on my boxes. Now my girls are both at school it might become more of a reality. I have plenty of ideas never enough time. What advice would you give a local artist? Never fight a land war in Asia. What other local artists do you admire? Aine Venables, Sally Matthews, Sarah Putt, Finn Beales, Eugene Fisk, Pat Birks, Lizzie Harper. Too many talented people round here to name them all. I also adore the work of Jean Miller - she was such a lovely lady. Artists Statement: My work is playful and often nostalgic. I have always loved maps and the idea of borders and these play an important role in the themes that I explore. The local landscape and wildlife are also highly influential in my work littlewhitedog.co.uk

The Thoughts of a Greengrocer Since I last wrote time has just flown by. What was middle summer has suddenly turned into the autumn term at school and the run up for Christmas. One of the things that gets me feeling autumnal is seeing sprouts in the market and they are there (have been for a couple of weeks now). Other winterish veg are coming like kale, swedes and turnips. Cauliflowers are for some reason quite dear at the moment so I suggest a nice Savoy cabbage at half the price, or if you want the sauce over your veg, sprouts or leeks will take either plain white sauce or cheese sauce. Fruit has been plentiful this year but not all of it has been as good it could be. There’s a wonderful range of apples locally and these early apples need eating quickly as they don’t keep like the later varieties perhaps because not as much sugar has had time to develop, and sugar is a wonderful preservative. Autumn raspberries have been excellent and quite reasonably priced and the same applies to local blueberries. Any day now we will have a frost - indeed one or two nights have been nearly there - and once that happens it will be the end of so many things in the garden. I have already ordered my winter baskets as i find that by ordering early and leaving them with the nursery to grow on a bit is really worthwhile later in the winter. I do the same at the other end of the year and it works very well. Thinking of frosts and so on at this time of the year it can be worth covering the less hardy fruit or veg to try to get them to last a bit longer; it’s not until later that the frost get right into the soil and kill the roots. I am looking forward to lots of lovely squashes and pumpkins being brought in to the shop - I’ve got one or two regular suppliers who have some most strange looking items. Recently I’ve had Crooked Neck Pumpkins which actually cook and eat like courgettes when young - you can eat the whole thing including the skin and seeds. I found them more satisfying than courgettes and less watery. Of course, at the end of October the pumpkins will all be getting cut up and turned into lanterns. A good economical idea is to rescue the bulk of the flesh from inside the pumpkin and use it for soup on the night - one doesn’t feel guilty then of spending the money and just putting most of it in the bin. However, when the time comes, I hope you enjoy it. Article supplied by Stuart Pritchard

Gwernyfed Geckos

who play a sport we feel passionate about, but also arrange a social gathering or two for a chance to let our hair down. Players currently range from 14 years to 50+.

Back in Spring 2013, a local ladies netball team was launched, Gwernyfed Geckos. After a Summer of friendly matches we decided to bite the bullet and enter the Radnor and District Winter League. Throughout the season we faced tough competition. During the second round we were undeafeated until our last game, winning 7 out of 8 games. We came third in the table, missing out on second position by just 3 points. For our first season, this was a fantastic result. We are now competing in the 2014/15 Winter League and as a Club we need to raise funds for training equipment and courses – to ensure we keep improving.

Thank you to our team sponsors Adrian Williams Firewood, JW Skips and Wye Local. Many thanks to Behind Bars, Smith Builders Ltd, Mark & Tim our bouncers, Hay Castle Trust and all raffle prize givers for your help, support and generosity for this event. Lisa Marie x

Being a group of ladies who like a party or two, we’ve decided to organise a Halloween Party as a fundraiser. This party will take place on Saturday 25th October at Hay Castle, 7.30pm - 1.00am. If the setting alone won’t get you in the Halloween spirit, we’re also encouraging fancy dress. Pull the stops out folks as there will be a prize for the best dressed. Throughout the evening there will be a bar to purchase drinks and music from local DJs Howard and Max.Tickets will cost just £8 in advance and can be purchased from any Gwernyfed Geckos player. If you aren’t familiar with the players please give myself a tinkle on 07971 446632 or Emma Anderson on 07723 605675. Tickets may also be available on the door at £10, but with a limited capacity, don’t wait and be disappointed.

Wild in October

Protecting wildlife for the future

It has been a fine autumn for butterflies in my garden. Now that the Buddleia is finished, Michaelmas Daisies, Viburnum and Ivy are favourites. Small Tortoiseshells have been here in double figures with Peacocks and one or two Painted Ladies. Commas and Red Admirals like this one should stay out into November if the weather is kind. Some Tortoiseshells, Peacocks and Commas hibernate here as adults, and increasingly a few Red Admirals. I remember glancing up from a January meeting in central London to see one fly past the window, but they are chiefly migrants with the largest numbers arriving in August and September. I read that the name used to be Red Admirable, suiting such a showy insect. Its caterpillars, like those of the other Vanessid butterflies, eat nettles but most Painted Ladies prefer thistles. Books and websites advise every wildlife gardener to have a nettle patch. I confess to failure in this matter, but if you have the space, please do as I say, not as I do.

There is plenty of good information and advice at www. wildaboutgardens.org.uk, and local news and pictures on the Facebook page at www.brecknockwildlifetrust.org.uk. Article by Keith Noble

Nature’s way As the days get shorter and colder it is time to look to nature to warm and boost us. Many of the best treatments are drawn from nature and can be created from ingredients in our own kitchen or garden – cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, elderflower, eucalyptus, juniper, myrtle and sloes. If you or a friend has an open fire you can make fragrant firelighters. Make them in autumn when cutting back your herb beds or shrubs, (bay, eucalyptus, lavender, lemon verbena, rosemary, sage or thyme). Tie cuttings into small bundles with raffia or string, and leave to dry out completely before using them. To make them extra special you can add strips of dried orange peel or cinnamon sticks. I have a small eucalyptus in my garden and I cut a few stems and put in a vase or add to a flower arrangement. It is a fast-growing evergreen shrub. Be ruthless in cutting back last years growth to keep it manageable. It prefers rich soil and full sun and is fairly hardy in our climate.

Joinery LTD JDW JOINERY LTD is a family run company specialising in the design and manufacture of purpose made joinery. Which includes: Windows, Doors, Frames & Screens, Oak Framed Porches, Sunrooms/Conservatories, Staircases, Handmade Kitchens – with design & installation.

I have heard that elderflower tea can help with colds so maybe add a few cloves or a cinnamon stick to boost the effect. You could always gently warm some elderflower cordial too. Have you tried making sloe gin? Collect the sloes now (there seems to be a bumper harvest this year) and this lovely warming drink will be ready for Christmas. A warming and evocative home fragrace is the No1 Autumn/Winter, a lovely bottle of pure essential oils which you diffuse in a scent/oil burner. It is a synergistic blend with frankincense and orange and this should cheer you up on a cold dark evening while sipping your warming drinks.

Old & New Vintage mix With a passion for vintage industrial furniture and lighting, Hannah Burson opened the Old Electric Shop as a pop-up shop during the 2013 Hay Festival. When the old puzzle shop at the former Crown Hotel in Broad Street came up for lease, she saw it as a chance to realise her vision of a shared space to create a lively, creative community of designers, makers, collectors and sellers, as well as offering gallery and studio space and a cafe. The result is an eclectic mix of old and new, vintage and contemporary – from clothing to collectables, furniture and art. Add in excellent coffee and tea, free wi-fi - not to mention occasional cocktails and you have a unique environment for meeting with friends and shopping for some highly individual items for home and wardrobe. As well as Hannah’s furniture, lighting and collectables, you’ll find vintage clothing from Lucy and Hay Does Vintage, childhood favourites from Barnabee’s Books, handmade womenswear from local designer/makers Llynfi Textiles, unique upholstery and accessories from Katie Tyler and an in-house studio where you can see Toria of Field & Found at work. Occasional workshops and art exhibitions complement the regular businesses. To keep up to date follow on Facebook www.facebook.com/oldelectricshop or come and see for yourself!

Where do we start?

FASHION FARMER So, what is

COLOUR ANALYSIS?

Autumn/Winter 2014 is full of new ideas, fresh shapes and bumper trends! But, the question when embarking on a new season is where do we start? I have edited a few key looks this season to offer a little direction. A good place to start when the air turns a little chilly and the days are drawing in is Outwear. The trends are all about warm and cosy from faux fur to plush sherling. Full and midi length cosy coats can be found all over the high street. M&S have a fantastic, affordable selection in classic and bold colours. Focus in Hay are bang-on-trend with their bubblegum midi length version, which will take you nicely into Spring. Coats are not the only way to get snug this Autumn/Winter; Fair-isle granddad sweaters scream warmth and comfort. Wear the oversized versions with a slim leather belt for definition. For a bit of a retro twist try out the brighter and bolder versions, rummage through vintage shops for the best value. The Old Electric Shop is already stocked up. For the more petite frames opt for slim, shorter trophy jumpers another winter staple. Staying with the retro vibe the 60s are still in full swing this season. Faux fur is an easy go-to and can again be found in Vintage and charity shops. The shaggier the better! Hem and necklines are high, team with colourful or patterned tights from Number 2 for the ultimate 60s look. A statement necklace will glam up high necklines and take you from day to night. La Maison has a beautiful selection. For those more comfortable with longer hem-lines, don’t worry you can rejoice in the more romantic side of the season where lengths are long and more feminine. The best I have found are at Hobbs.

A once in a life time test to find YOUR perfect colours, those which CAN & WILL...

• Make you glow • Diminish wrinkles • Banish shadows • Define your features • Brighten & widen your eyes • Light you up • Transform the way you shop Once you know them, that’s it. Your colours will make you look YOUR best at YOUR most natural, for life. Simple.

plethora of choice. When the weather cools wear with thermal vets or under sweaters (with the collar just showing) and when it begins to rain, turn to Timberland for a good sturdy pair of waterproof leather boots. All you need to finish the look is to download the Routebuddy app which locates local foot and bridle paths any you are ready to go.. For more Autumn/Winter fashion tips, news and where to buy visit me on facebook and on my blog www.fashionfarmer.co.uk

Lastly, ‘The Great Outdoors’ is most definitely a good mood to engage in this season. Plaid and quilted jackets will be your staple (boys & girls) and are synonymous with getting warm and snug. Super Dry has this look nailed and even their plain cotton shirts will do too. (Flow has plaid a plenty!) Shirts will be all over the high street so there will be a

Huws Gray showroom cooking up a storm with Dawn Roads It is a year since Huws Gray bought F J Williams, the builders’ merchant in Hay-on-Wye. There has been a huge investment from Huws Gray to make the branch into what we see today, a new shop that can cater for trade and public customers. So whether it is a pallet of cement or a tin of Farrow and Ball paint they can supply it. As many of you will know F J Williams also had a well-stocked stove and cooker showroom, Huws Gray have built on this success and created a fantastic showroom that encompasses the whole of the old shop and showroom over two floors. Within this space they have stoves, cookers, kitchens, bathrooms and various accessories. Brands that they supply are Charnwood, Esse, Rayburn, Aga, Rangemaster, Hunter, Masterclass kitchens and Garden Trading to name just a few. To celebrate this development they will be hosting an open evening

and morning that will include Rayburn cookery demonstrations by Dawn Roads. They hope you can join them on Friday October 17th 4pm-7pm and Saturday October 18th 9am-12pm to try some delicious Rayburn cooking and see what their new showroom has to offer.

Archbishop blesses local book That’s not something you see every day, but it’s what happened for local authors Laurence & Alison Matthews when Rowan Williams, the former Archbishop of Canterbury, described their new book ‘Framespotting’ as “hopeful, realistic and original”. What’s the book about? Alison explains: “It’s about how news and debates are often ‘framed’ a certain way; how to spot when this is going on, and how to see the bigger picture. It sounds like a serious topic, and it is, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be put across in a fun, friendly and upbeat way.” Why framing? Laurence: “We both spent enough time in industry to see a lot of framing. Then, when I got interested in climate change a few years ago I saw it there too. And yet, all too often, people don’t realise it’s happening. But it’s really important because it affects how we see everything from tax to obesity.” And why is there a sheep on the front cover? Alison: “Look at what the sheep is doing - it’s an example

of framing! It’s also there to convey the light-hearted tone of the book. And let’s face it - what could be more appropriate than a sheep in Hay?” ‘Framespotting’ is published by IFF Books this month, and Alison & Laurence are having a book launch in Richard Booth’s Bookshop in Hay (see the advert on this page). Come and hear what happened in Brussels, and how writing as a husband and wife team works out in practice!

Reflections on a Train Journey Home

Saturday 25th October – Sunday 2nd November 2014

Jump on board the last part of this journey home! Hay Theatre Company are in the last stage of their reminiscence project which began in October 2013. “Reflections” set out to collect memories from elderly people local to Hay on Wye borders and form this material into a new play. The play has an intergenerational cast drawn from Hay Senior Youth Theatre and our newly formed reminiscence group and boy do they get on! “We can’t and don’t want to stop them talking”, says director and writer Janine Sharp. “We are now in rehearsal and the play dates and venues have been booked so come and join us and we will take you on a journey through time.” In a curious style similar to Alice in Wonderland, Wizard of Oz and Dr Who, the local Doctor’s daughter, Elizabeth Wilson, steps off the Hay train on her way home from school, only to find it is 1936! How can this be? This was the year she was born. She meets many local characters, on her journey through time, all with a story to tell, before she returns safely home to 13 Broad Street, (Tinto House) 1950. All aboard! This train will be stopping at The Parish Hall, Lion Street, Hay on Monday 27th October, performance 7pm. Cusop Village Hall, Tuesday 28th October performance 2-30pm, Dorstone Village Hall, Wednesday 29th October performance 7pm. For tickets from the Station Master call 01497 822523. £6 concessions £3.

In this centenary year of World War 1, walk with us to pay tribute to some of the people and places of Monmouthshire which played their part in the Great War, World War 2 and other conflicts. Experienced walk leaders will guide you around this beautiful county with the added interest of discovering secret bunkers, the grave of possibly the last combatant in World War 1 and the important role of the humble pigeon. The family Halloween Night Walk to the Kymin is sure to excite and for the those that enjoy a challenge the walk from Ross on Wye to Chepstow over 2 days should satisfy. Walks from 3 – 18 miles. The full programme is available online at www. walkinginmonmouthshire.org where you can purchase your ticket.

News from Bronllys Hospital and Community League of Friends Firstly we would like to thank all of you who have given us donations and those who have kept us supplied with items for our Table Sale on the first Saturday of the month in Talgarth Church Hall. We really appreciate it as do the patients and staff. Due to some works on the ward there was a delay in spending but we have recently bought an INR Machine, a Hoist and more Foot Stools and we are looking at what is also most needed on the Ward. We have paid for an improved aerial so that patients can access more TV stations. We look forward to meeting so many Bronllys Hospital supporters at the Table Sale (used to be called Car Boot) which is a regular source of income.

of patients will be of utmost importance during this time. After this work is completed, hopefully by the new year, there are plans to improve the care for palliative and rehab patients and the ward will be dementia friendly.

There may be some disruption to the ward, hopefully not in the too far distant future. There will be some Fire Compliance work carried out and work to replace the electrics and plumbing. This could well involve some asbestos removal. The safety

Our book of memories of Bronllys Hospital is about to go to print and we will advertise when they go on sale.

When that is about to happen we will keep you well informed and we hope many will sponsor something special.. Offers are already coming in. The Day Hospital Garden has been officially reopened in memory of Mary Prothero. Please remember our Autumn Fair on November 8th in Talgarth Church Hall at 2pm.

News from Fairtrade Hay Fairtrade Hay were pleased to have a stall at the community event in the buttermarket this summer. It was a good opportunity to talk to people about Fairtrade, and we also sold a range of Fairtrade products including some of Oxfam’s fantastic collection which includes honey, chocolate, coffee and dried fruits. We’re delighted to be supporting Black History Month this October with a great event in conjunction with Medics4Timbuktu. Come along to the Parish Hall on Saturday 11th October for an afternoon and evening of drumming, dancing, music, talks and food. Family workshops will take place from 4pm, with kids drumming and a dance workshop. At 5pm you can hear a fascinating talk from Martha Musonza Holman. Martha runs Love Zimbabwe, a Community Interest Company which aims to help disadvantaged Zimbabweans, especially those in rural areas. As well as selling Zimbabwean arts and crafts, they create self sustaining projects in Zimbabwe that will enable people to rebuild their lives. Martha was a teacher in Zimbabwe for several years and set up a women’s co-operative teaching women in villages to make arts, crafts and hand painted textiles. The event will continue with an evening of African and Latin dance music, with great food and drinks. Workshops are £3 and evening tickets are £5 (free for under 14s) on the door.We hope to see you there! Bike

F

The saying goes what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger – and two months after our devastating summer break-in, we’re glad to say we’re still standing. To celebrate, we’re hosting an afternoon of dual slalom racing with our friends at Trewern Outdoor Education Centre on Saturday October 18th. The Sunset Slalom is open to kids and adults alike, riding any kind of bike – though it’s best suited to offroaders and BMXs. Entry costs a mere £3 and there will be prizes for the fastest riders, plus - of course - local ale on tap and fresh pizzas from Trewern’s wood-fired oven! Up at Drover HQ on Forest Road, sticky-fingered intruders are now being kept at bay with a state-ofthe-art alarm and monitoring system and – happier news – we’ve got a brand new manager fronting our store and workshop. Brock Sandeman has years of cycling experience across all disciplines. He’s been trail riding and building bikes since he was a nipper, he’s raced the legendary Megavalanche in the Alps, and he’s a qualified mountain bike leader and instructor to boot. Meanwhile, the nights are drawing in and the weather is inevitably taking an autumnal turn for the worse. But a spot of rain and dark mornings shouldn’t mean you mothball your steed – with the right togs and gear you can laugh in the face of wintery weather and keep pedaling through to spring! With that in mind, we’ve put together a handy guide to winter-proofing both your bike and body. Read it online at our blog, where you can also enter a competition to win a set of Blackburn Design lights worth £50. Check out the blog and enter the comp at drovercycles.co.uk/ride-winter. For the latest on the Sunset Slalom, keep an eye on facebook.com/ drovercycles and facebook.com/sunsetslalomhay.

News from Hay Town Council

Council. It is essential that we know that the Town Plan will reflect the concerns and the aspirations of those people who live within the town but whose voices are not often heard.

While there was no official Town Council meeting during August, much time was spent on the planning of the first Town Plan consultation exercise which was held on Wednesday 10th September at Hay School. Invitations to attend were extended to representatives from as many groups of interested parties within the town as possible. The response was most encouraging. During the meeting four town councillors led discussion groups which focussed on Regeneration, the Environment, Public Services and People. In the brief summing up at the end of the meeting, it appears that many of the concerns arose from the loss of facilities within the town as a result of the difficulties which are currently experienced by Powys County Council; the news that the new school with its planned community building and library had been further postponed probably heightened concerns expressed within the discussion groups. The mood of the meeting was extremely constructive and positive and, while there was some diversity of opinion, it was clear that all contributors to the discussions had valuable insights, knowledge and information which will be invaluable in informing the work of the Town Council over the coming months.

The Town Council are very grateful from the support which they have received from staff at Brecon Beacons National Park; they have assisted with the planning of the whole process of consultation – readily providing support and advice at every stage. Article supplied by Councillor Helen Davies

While the findings of the consultation exercise have to be further analysed and assessed, the town councillors are heartened and encouraged by the enthusiasm and support of those who attended. They are now looking forward to the next stage of the consultation process which will involve questionnaires being sent out to all residents on the electoral roll; councillors would urge the people of Hay to respond as fully as possible for the opinions and visions of the people who live within the town are urgently needed if the Town Plan is to truly reflect the views and concerns of all those with an interest in the town as it faces the challenges ahead. When the document lands through your door it will be distinctive and not easily dismissed as ‘junk mail’; please complete it and let us know your views which will inform the future work of the town

News from Hay Walkers Are Welcome October sees the return of the Hay Walking Festival. Now in its fourth year, the annual event is a celebration of walking in and around Hay on Wye. This year the festival runs from Wednesday 8th to Sunday 12th October with a huge range of walks to suit all comers - from a full day traverse of the Black Mountains to easy-paced ambles. Walk leaders will be helping to bring the local landscape alive by sharing their expertise in everything from history and archaeology to flora and fauna, foraging and navigation. There are evening events too. On Friday 10th join Tristan Gooley for “The Walker’s Guide to Outdoor Clues and Signs”. The award-winning author will draw on two decades of pioneering outdoors experience to offer walkers the ultimate guide to natural navigation - finding your way using nature. This event is being run in conjunction with Booth’s Bookshop and starts at 7.30pm On Saturday 11th a walk will leave Cusop Memorial Hall at 17.00 bound for the top of Cusop Hill. Join in with some singing on the summit before the torchlit procession descends in the dark. Back at the hall there will be soup and a roll waiting to warm you up! To book tickets for walks or events visit www. haywalking.org or pop into the TIB during the festival for last-minute ticket sales. You can also call 01497 822423 for more information. Hay Walkers are Welcome is also delighted that a new bus service, called Hay Ho!, is due to start on Sunday 5th October. The service in part replaces the current 39a bus which will be withdrawn at the end of September due to funding cuts. The service will run on Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays throughout the year. There will be three buses per day leaving Hereford for Hay at 10.10, 13.10, and 16.10. Return trips from Hay are scheduled at 11.50, 14.50 and 17.20. Buses are a great way to explore the local countryside, and are ideal for one-way walks. Come along and celebrate the new bus service by joining the Hereford Group of the Ramblers Association on Sunday 12th October for a “bus walk”. All welcome.

The walk starts from Dorstone when the bus arrives at 11.02. The route then takes in Vagar Hill, Cefn Hill, Newhouse Wood and Cusop Dingle, arriving in Hay with plenty of time for afternoon tea. Those returning to Dorstone can catch the 17.20 bus. For more information please call Philip on 01981 500398.

News from Talgarth TIRC The team of volunteers at the TIRC were delighted to spend a Summer evening getting together at a ‘Garden Party’ which was held in the Cottage garden, courtesy of Rita Rogers. The whole team contribute their time to keep the Centre open six and a half days a week. Peter Emerson draws up a monthly rota with many of the volunteers having a regular slot each week, with other volunteers contributing their time when they are able. Whilst the volunteers meet up each month for a General Meeting, nevertheless, the opportunity to get together socially does not happen so often. The occasion was made even more enjoyable by the attendance of many friends and supporters of the Centre, plus some possible new recruits. The Summer so far has been a busy one with the season beginning quite early this year. This is probably due to not only the good weather but also the the growing popularity of the town as a good centre for many leisure activities, plus the town’s beautiful setting. The town itself boasts an increased number of attractions and local shops which enhance the visitor and resident experience. Sadly there has been a recent down side which is the threat of a reduction in the bus services and the imminent closure of the town’s only bank. The Information Centre now has an ‘out of hours’ information service in the form of a digital screen in the window. This also offers the opportunity for local businesses and accommodation providers to advertise with us in addition to the website and window notices. The new website which has been a long time as a work in progress should be ready soon under the auspices of ‘Visit Talgarth’ which will give an enhanced window on the town, environs, events and facilities. If you would like to be involved in our work we are always delighted to welcome new helpers to our team. Please get in touch by calling in to the Tower Shop on the town’s square or by telephone: 01874 712226, or by email tirc@talgarthcentre.org.uk

Seasonal Influenza Vaccinations - no appointment necessary.

The ‘Flu season is about to start. Over 65’s and those in the NHS at-risk groups will be receiving reminders from their GPs to get their jabs in October. For patients who can’t access the GP clinics, we will again be offering free vaccinations to those who qualify under the NHS. If you aren’t in an at-risk group, but still want the vaccination, we may be able to offer you the vaccination as a private service. Please call, or call in for details. We are happy to discuss discounts for local businesses who want to get their workforce vaccinated too.

Prescription collection and ordering service

We collect prescriptions daily from Haygarth Medical centre in Talgarth, but can also arrange for prescriptions to be posted to us from Brecon and Builth Wells Medical Centres. If you have repeat medication from any of these GP practices, we are happy to order prescriptions on your behalf. Contact us and we’ll make the necessary arrangements.

Disability Discrimination Act

Under the above mentioned Act, Pharmacies are obliged to make “reasonable adjustments” to their services to ensure patients with disabilities can access those services. With regard to the dispensing of medication, such adjustments could include large print labels for the visually impaired or reminder charts for patients with memory problems. Monitored dosage systems (dosette boxes) are another adjustment we could make, however these are not suitable for all patients or medicines. If you have a particular requirement, please speak to us about assessing your needs.

Smoking Cessation - Stoptober is back!

October’s Public Health Campaign is another encouragement for Smokers to quit. Giving up smoking is the best thing any smoker can do to reduce their risk of a wide range future health problems, not just lung cancer. If you are considering quitting, we may be able to help. Through our NHS funded smoking Cessation service, we can offer 12 weeks of support and (if needed) Nicotine Replacement Therapy to clients who want to make a serious attempt at quitting.

Advice

We are here to help you get the best out of your medicines and manage your health. Even if we aren’t dispensing any medication for you, we are always happy to provide you with health and healthy-living advice and information. Don’t rely on the media and the internet, we have access to a wide range of quality resources to give you accurate, balanced and un-biased information.

Patient Satisfaction Survey

Each year we survey our patients and customers to see what we are doing well and what we need to improve on. Questionnaires are now available in store for the 2014/15 survey.
