Eight years ago, November 2006, we launched our first ever issue of Wye Local! Over these eight terrific years we’ve grown from strength to strength: the team has expanded, but still all living locally; the magazine size has increased; the number of businesses now advertising month on month is superb; the local groups and communities we help and promote has multiplied. Overall we are very pleased with the success of Wye Local. Long may it continue! Nicole has been busy setting us up on Twitter. Tweeting is all very new to us, so please do bare with! News from Talgarth by Cllr. William Powell Powys County Councillor for Talgarth As I draw together my thoughts for this month’s column, the nights are drawing in apace and the days of British Summer Time are expiring fast. At the same time, I can scarcely believe that we are approaching the countdown to Christmas once again. For people of all ages, it is a special season but it can also pose real challenges, especially for the lonely and those who are anxious or finding it difficult to cope financially. We should do our best to be mindful of this in the coming weeks.

mince pies. The annual Tree of Light Service follows on the afternoon of Sunday, 30th November at St Gwendoline’s Parish Church. This year the popular Talgarth Christmas Market is taking place on Saturday, 6th December in Talgarth Livestock Market, which benefits from ample car parking close by.

As I commented last year, it is important to celebrate quite how much progress has been made by local businesses, both in terms of the shops and also the hospitality sector. In sharp contrast with just a few years ago, it is now possible to get a wide range of gifts and full selection of seasonal food locally, on our own doorstep. Likewise, there are real options for those who may want to have lunch or a drink in the run up to the festive season. The Tabernacle Chapel has also become a popular niche venue for events of all kinds during the course of this year. It is great to see this community building, cherished by the local Baptist congregation since it opened in 1858, being taken forward to the next phase of its life. November sees the AGM of the Talgarth Festival of the Black Mountains, when the sterling efforts of the volunteers, which culminated in the success of last August’s Festival, need to be recognised. The Lights Group volunteers are likewise making great progress with the painstaking work of preparing and mounting the Christmas Lights, which are always the pride of Talgarth at the turn of the year.The build up to the grand switch on this year is from 5:00pm on Saturday, 29th November with the switch on itself at 6:00pm. Father Christmas will be in his Grotto in the Town Hall and there will be mulled wine and

Meanwhile, the sporting life of Talgarth continues to be in good heart. It is very positive indeed that Talgarth Town Council is stepping up to the plate to take on responsibility for the King George V Sports Pavillion in Westfields, together with the adjacent facilities. This is part of a countywide move by Powys County Council to return assets to local control. Whilst this is partly a response to budgetary pressures on the Authority, it also enables local sports clubs to bring forward their own collaborative development proposals for funding – and some exciting projects are currently under discussion for the home of grassroots sport in Talgarth. I hope to see many of you around in the coming weeks, at the forthcoming Service of Remembrance on Sunday, 9th November and at other community events. News from Glasbury Ward by Chris Davies Powys County Councillor for Glasbury Since the last edition of the Wye Local the governing bodies of both Clyro and Hay Schools have met with officers of Powys County Council and had it confirmed that the new school buildings will not be completed and opened until 2017. This additional delay is unfair on pupils, teachers, parents and on our communities as a whole. We have now arranged regular meetings with officers and require progress at each stage. We have just been informed of the funding settlement for Powys CC from the Welsh Assembly. The result is not good and difficult decisions will have to be made. Powys has received either the lowest or second lowest settlement in Wales for the last seven years. It is a pity that we have allowed our politicians to accept this without successful challenge. Let’s see what the future brings! Even in difficult economic times local community spirit always shines through as was shown recently

with a number of Macmillan coffee mornings held in the area. Several of which broke new fund raising records – well done everyone! Our Harvest Festivals held in our schools and churches have also been well attended and remind everyone to give thanks and celebrate all that is best in our countryside. Don’t forget that the Annual Fire Works display at Clyro Court is taking place on Wednesday 5th November. This is organised by the Black Mountains Lions who do so much to raise money for local good causes. I have again been given the job of cooking the hot dogs and beef burgers, so I hope to see you there. Gardening Column

Viburnum The Viburnum group of both evergreen and deciduous shrubs is a large one indeed and is able to provide beauty and interest all year round. So much so in fact that Viburnums could be chosen as a plant for every month! Most have white or pink flowers, many are sweetly perfumed, some have berries in colours ranging through yellow and red to shiny black and most of the deciduous varieties have an autumn colour display to rival even the Japanese Maples. In November the evergreen Viburnum tinus has glossy, dark green leaves and clusters of red, pink or white buds which will provide colour all winter until they open into small white or pink flowers in spring. At the same time the Viburnum bodnantense group, including “Dawn” and “Charles Lemont”, are showing their richly coloured autumn leaves to be followed by sweetly scented, rose tinted flowers which last into winter and beyond. Also at this time of year Viburnum opulus – the Guelder Rose – is showing off its red, maple like autumn leaves and its rich red, translucent fruits which last well into winter. If that is not enough in the summer the shrub is covered in flattened clusters of white flowers like those of a Lacecap Hydrangea. Viburnums are hardy, easy to grow shrubs and can be controlled in shape and size by pruning as soon as flowering is over. Stress & Weight Loss Part 1 In today’s stressful society we are ‘plugged in’ most of the time. Think about the amount of electrical appliances in your home that you use on a daily basis: Mobile, lap top, mp3, tablet, dvd, telly, alarm, clocks, microwave, washing machine, dishwasher, tumble dryer….Your body picks up on all this electrical interference: Your adrenal glands take the flack.. Have you ever thought about having a day away from technology? Maybe you think you can’t? Try it - just for a day. I did it a little while ago and I absolutely loved it (this from someone who gets accused of being surgically attached to her phone). Take a daily stress busting walk in our countryside instead! Consider slowing down, pacing yourself almost. Look at it in terms of restoring your balance, your equilibrium.You may think that by being constantly on the go, you will lose weight, but in truth, the opposite can be true. Just one of many reasons why I don’t think beasting yourself in the gym is always beneficial. When stress levels are high and our adrenals are working overtime, we will stay in a perpetuating cycle of gaining weight.

Exercise is a powerful tool. Not just in the battle for weight loss. Exercise is a positive stress that our adrenal glands respond well to. However, we should not be training if we are already exhausted: so give our bodies the rest that they crave (but be careful not to use this as an excuse not to exercise)! If we are already tired then we will be over-stressing our bodies by putting exercise into the mix. And breathe!I know it sounds daft, we have to breathe to exist but how many of us really notice when we are breathing hard, shallow etc? Deep breaths slow your heart rate down and calm the entire body. Name anything else that can do that!? Try and focus on your breath at some point every day even if it is only for a minute or two. Lastly - have fun! In our society we seem to be rapidly losing the ability to just get out have fun, be daft just for the sake of it. Laughing and enjoyment are essential aspects of life and a terrific way to relax. Ask me to test you for possible Adrenal fatigue – no charge but it’s appointment only! I can remember lying in bed aged four trying to work out whether there was more of the colour blue in the world - or green! Where did you train or gain experience? Art colleges in Leeds and Hereford, sharing a studio with other painters, and then lots and lots of painting. What has been your proudest moment? The first time I exhibited at the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, at the Mall Galleries in London. I’ve exhibited and sold paintings there three years running, and I love seeing my work next to paintings by some of the best watercolourists in the country. What would you class as ‘your masterpiece’? I’m never satisfied, so I haven’t got there yet.

Have you any future plans for your work? I’m looking forward to exhibiting at Oriel CRIC at Crickhowell in 2015. This is a beautiful light gallery with a wonderful selection of artists. After Christmas, some of my cards and possibly giclée prints and paintings will be available from Gallery 25 in Church Street in Hereford. What advice would you give a local artist? Find your own voice and then be true to it. And make lots of artist friends through local organisations and networks. There’s so much to learn and share. What other local artists do you admire? There are too many to mention them all, but Veronique Avon and Martina JirankovaLimbrick are the two very talented artists with whom I recently did h.Art week at Clifford, and they must come top of my list! Artist statement: My work is very much in the tradition of artists depicting the garden as a theatre for many of the significant events (mostly joyful, but also more contemplative or poignant) in our lives. It also reflects my own experience of working in the gardens of big country houses in Worcestershire and Ireland, and my love of the history of garden design. I hope it gives other people as much enjoyment as it gives me in the making of it.

If you want to achieve something, hard work and a go out and get it attitude will get you there. Grab any opportunities that come your way, and treat life with optimism, as life is to short. What makes you grumpy? No sleep. You’re given one million pounds, what do you spend it on? An Aston Martin. My goal from a young age has been to own an Aston Martin by the time I’m 40. Only Nine years to go! Any change would go on my house and be invested in my business. Have any bad habits? I’m very talented at switching

The Thoughts of a Greengrocer Already I am writing for the November magazine - it seems as though a year has passed me by without my noticing. I do remember, however, a good summer that stretched well into autumn and only now is it getting all misty in the mornings. I’ve been interested in the early morning farming program recently as they have been looking into the thorny problem of imported fruit being offered when there is so much home grown stuff available. An initial straw poll would indicate that it is not quite such a problem as it might be. However, we must be aware that our choice has a big influence either because we want apples such as Granny Smith and Golden Delicious which don’t do well in our climate or the very fashionable Pink Lady that is not allowed to be grown in Britain by the owners of the name. This latter import annoys me very much as it is a case of restraint of trade. It is also very expensive as the Pink Lady is double the price of locally grown fruit - you really do pay your money to take your pick! The home grown vegetables are very good and apart from one or two little flutters on the price - usually due to the weather - they are very reasonably priced. It is not universal but the one big disappointment this year, to my mind, has been the runner beans. I suspect that the fine dry summer left them thirsty and when they did come a lot of the ones offered had bad spots or rust. They were alright but not quite what we are used to. Now is the time for pickling and preserving. I’ve noticed a lot more people this year are pickling onions, both the larger ones and, particularly, the little cocktail onions. It may be a chore while you are doing it but later in the winter all the pickles will bring much enjoyment. It’s a bit late now but will do for next year, try to keep all you old jars from jam, mayonnaise, curry mix or whatever. Wash them out and when needed just sterilize them in a pan of boiling water. This way cuts the cost of preserving down to a sensible level and makes it all worthwhile. The other thing for Christmas is to make your sloe gin and other related drinks all of which need a few months in bottle to give the best flavour. Next month is Christmas, so I hope you will all be ready.. Article supplied by Stuart Pritchard

Since September there has been a Great White Egret at Llangors Lake. Last year there were two from late November, so we might expect another. It seems likely that one of these is the same individual which has wintered at the Lake for four years running. Until a few years ago, Great White Egrets were rare visitors to Britain, but they are now here throughout the year and have raised young on the Somerset Levels. Other birds in the heron family have also colonised Britain recently. Little Egrets were the first to nest in 1996 and there are now hundreds of pairs. In the last few years Spoonbills, Cattle Egrets, Purple Herons and Little Bitterns have also started to breed here. The arrival of these immigrants follows an expansion of their European range to the north and west, a clear indication of climate change. Some birds may be able to move and adapt, but for most animals including us global warming is an urgent challenge.

World Bread Awards Success Real Bread Bakery, The Bakers’ Table at Melin Talgarth Mill scooped four awards on their first attempt at the Tiptree World Bread Awards 2014. Although they did not make the finalists awards ceremony where veteran award winning Hay baker Alex Gooch took the top prize in the Sourdough category, The Bakers’ Table received Gold for their Bara Felinwr (seeded wholemeal) made with Talgarth Mill flour. Their three other awards (all silver) were for Green Olive and Rosemary Foccacia Bread, Ciabatta, and Chocolate and Cherry buns made using Tiptree black cherry jam. Owner Nicola Willis, and baker Ian Sheeran worked through the night to get their entries ready to be taken to London by member of staff, Aneira Williams who took the bread via train and taxi to Westminster the following morning for judging. Nicola said ‘We are very excited to have won these awards for our bread as it’s the first competition of this kind that we have entered. Our staff and customers are delighted for us. We’ll be working on getting our breads to award ceremony level for next year’s competition. It’s fantastic to have this recognition for our loaves.’ Never one to rest on her laurels, Nicola has just completed the Café and Bakery’s entry for the National Tourism Awards in the category best Café, having won a runners up award in the 2013 competition.

Castle Feast Come in from the December chill to the warm, romantic setting of Hay Castle for a benefit holiday feast. For three days only, Greek chef Alexandros Narlis will open a festive pop-up restaurant as a fundraiser to support the restoration of Hay Castle. New developments at Church Barn Farm Shop Church Barn Farm Shop are soon going into their 3rd year at the barn, and they have exciting developments ahead in 2015. For those of you who are unaware of who they are, they’re a farming family from Stowe Farm in Whitney on Wye, who opened Church Barn Farm Shop in 2011, and have been dedicated to producing and supplying the best quality produce they possibly can. They are strong believers in shopping locally and promoting the quality produce that we have in Herefordshire and the Welsh Borders. Church Barn Farm Shop have just begun producing their own delicious natural yogurt with the milk from their organic herd, that graze just 2 minutes from the farm shop, and the production is now going to be taking place in the farm shop itself from early 2015. You will be able to see yogurt

production from the moment the milk arrives, to the labelled pot going on the shelves. In October the shop opened a small children’s library room, working as part of the Rural Book Scheme with Herefordshire County Council, and they will be developing this in 2015 with a larger area for children, and developing an adult reading area and conference area with Wi-Fi. They are starting to conduct courses at Church Barn and feel free to get in touch if you think they have an area you may be able to use. They’d also really like to take this opportunity to thank everyone, as always, for your continued support, which has allowed them to make these developments!

The equipment and technology available to process firewood today has changed a lot since Adrian first started in the firewood business. Having invested heavily in the latest equipment, to make processing the firewood as efficient as possible, Adrian is able to keep the quality high and the prices amongst the lowest in the area. To get the most heat for your money it is really important that you only use seasoned logs with a maximum moisture content of 25%. At A W Logs the wood is seasoned to less than 25% moisture content and are sold by volume, not by weight so you will always know the size of the load you are receiving. News from Bryngwyn RDA Our third year has been incredibly busy, not just with riding but with fundraising and preparing for carriage driving, which we hope to start next year. Based at Bryngwyn Riding Centre, near Painscastle, we now provide sessions for up to 20 children every other Saturday, as well as up to eight adults and young people on Thursdays; these are tailored to suit specific needs and requirements. Saturday riders have worked towards their RDA proficiency tests; children have been riding independently, learning parts of the pony and remembering what a stirrup, bit and girth look like. They and their families have been delighted with their progress and there have been lots of big smiles and a few emotional tears, and that is just from the volunteers! Next year, we are looking to give our riders an opportunity to try endurance riding and we hope to take some to regional competitions too. We are so grateful to everyone who has given their time, energy and cash, and donated goods

for the charity shop in Llandrindod Wells, which raised a fantastic £2,200.The Huntington Chase, held in September, also supported us, raising £255, and Fairfield High School donated £150. These funds will be used to purchase a harness for the carriage driving, as well as other equipment and resources. We could not function without our brilliant team of committed and experienced volunteers, who are so willing to spend their days supporting our riders. If you are willing to learn and would like to be part of this enthusiastic team, with or without previous experience, we can find a role to suit you! We are particularly looking for helpers for the Thursday sessions, which will be continuing into the winter, so long as the weather permits. An enjoyable event to end our club meetings at the hall for this year, as we will be having our Christmas lunch meeting on Wednesday 10th December. As many of you will already know, the unexpected event on the evening of 26th September (the non arrival of our presenter of The Wonders of Westonbirt) it turned out to be a compounding of many things that happened, and Pauline our presenter for the evening was truly sorry and I must say, very stressed when I spoke to her the following day. There was no accident, as I know some of you were worried as she was expected to be travelling from Stroud area I now have a written apology from the organiser at Westonbirt which I will make available for all to see at our meetings. Thanks to everyone who came along to support us, and so sorry it didn’t turn out as planned. Special thanks to all who so kindly declined their ticket refund. We enjoyed a pleasant musical quiz with John Rees who accommodated us at the last minute at our September meeting. Much laughter heard trying to get things right. The prizes were appreciated, thank you. The MacMillans Coffee Morning, sponsored by the Club and held at Geraldine and Frank Cleary’s home, raised £253 thanks to everyone who supported us. On Wednesday 1st October Gwernyfed High School hosted its annual Open Evening. This highly successful evening was a wonderful opportunity for prospective pupils and their parents to see and experience the school. Mr Williams, the Head teacher gave a brief presentation to the packed hall, attributing the schools success to the “Gwernyfed Effect”. What is the “Gwernyfed Effect”?......... The staff challenge the students to succeed and are relentless in expecting high standards. We believe that the students can and will achieve their potential through hard work. We support all of our students regardless of ability and we find that the pupils gain in confidence and self-belief. We know this works because every year our results have improved and this year we achieved our best ever results: At GCSE over 70% of pupils achieved 5 A* - C grades including English and Mathematics which was an increase of over 8% on last year. 96% achieved at least 5 A* - C GCSE grades and 100% achieved at least 5 A* - G GCSE grades. At KS3 (years 7-9) we achieved our best ever Key Stage 3 results. The Open Evening also included the first screening of the ‘Welcome to Gwernyfed 2014’ video, starring pupils and staff at the school. This students’ view of the school was created by Sixth Formers Sam Powell and Rebecca Williams and is available to view on the website (www.gwernyfed.com) Visitors were then able to enjoy touring the school, where departments showcased their subjects with information on the courses as well as enjoyable interactive sessions. These included icing cakes in Hospitality, experiments in Science, questionnaires in Geography and competitions in PE. The evening was a huge success and was thoroughly enjoyed by the many visitors. The new computer system is finally settling; we’re gaining confidence using it more quickly and efficiently. Hopefully you’ve noticed! Appointments There will never be enough appointments, however it is frustrating for us when patients do not attend (DNA) their appointment - sometimes they no longer need the appointment or simply forget. Please remember to always cancel/rearrange appointments you cannot keep, so they may be offered to someone else and clinical time isn’t wasted. In an effort to reduce DNAs we now only release routine GP appointments two weeks ahead – e.g appointments for 15th December will become available on 1st December. A selection of appointments are available for booking via the internet on the “My Health On Line” system. Please ask for details. Sometimes you don’t need to see the doctor – eg to discuss results or seek advice. We now offer telephone consultations. Booked through reception, an estimated time will be given for the GP to phone you. You should be available during that session and ensure we have your correct contact details. Remember…not everything can be dealt with over the telephone, and you should consider carefully whether this is a suitable option for you. Chronic disease … have you had your annual review yet? News from Timbuktu The last few weeks have seen two great fundraising events for Hay2Timbuktu projects. We held a film and curry night at the Globe and welcomed the Malian Consul, Mark Saade. Mark told us that he remains positive that a lasting peace agreement will be reached. However there are still instances of violence, particularly in the North of Mali. Mark is planning to link us up with the brave individual who rescued many of the treasured manuscripts from Timbuktu, and we hope to bring the story to Hay in the future. We watched a film about how musicians in Mali reacted to the troubles, you can watch it online at sahelcalling.com. The second fundraiser was organised by Medics4Timbuktu and included dancing, drumming and an inspirational talk on fair trade. It was a great evening to recognise Black History Month. Thanks to everyone who came along to either of these events. And a big thank you to all the shops in Hay who created Timbuktu themed windows to mark Mali Independence Day.

We’ve received photos to show the motorbike ambulance that Hay purchased in action in Timbuktu. As well as responding to medical emergencies, the motorbike will help transport pregnant women to clinics. The second instalment of our bursary to fund girls in schools will be issued soon. The results from the end of academic exams were great for those girls in the bursary with 98% passing and moving on to the next grade. The English teacher from the schools where our project is working is now in direct contact with us, and he tells us the girls’ English has improved greatly and they are enthusiastic to learn. It’s the Hay2Timbuktu Annual General Meeting on 13th November. We’ll be welcoming some new Trustees to the board, and look forward to seeing anyone interested in our work at the Swan from 7pm.

News from the Village Quire Following the quire’s recent performance of their WW1 show Back to the Garden; a show based on letters sent from the front by Presteigne gardener William Bevan and performed in Leominster Priory in September, the quire and Phil Smith will be giving a FREE performance of the show again in Glasbury Village Hall on Remembrance Sunday (9th November) from 3 – 4 pm.
