Talking of Schools - for some time now I have been planning a family magazine. Well I’m pleased to say production is in full swing and Cariads Local Family Magazine will be delivered to 21 Primary Schools and at least 10 Children’s Nurseries in early July. I have spoken with each School and Nursery, and they are on board to pack a magazine into each of the children’s bags - just in time for the approaching Summer Holidays. So if you offer a service or a product or you are holding events and classes for children aged 0 – 12 years then this magazine is right up your street! Take a look at the advert on page 17 for more details.

The 2015 Calendar is now out in local outlets, the gent who delivered these in midMay told me there should be a law against calendars coming out this early! Whilst I laughed, I explained to him that my aim is for visitors to purchase a copy this year and return next year when they’re reminded how beautiful this area is. Enjoy our June issue in our breath-taking surroundings, Lisa Marie x

News from Talgarth by Cllr. William Powell Powys County Councillor for Talgarth As I sign off this month’s column, we are basking in glorious early summer sunshine. The second Talgarth Walking Festival earlier in the month was a genuine success, as were the wider community events that enriched the long weekend of activities. I congratulate everyone involved - and know that efforts are already underway to improve still further on this for future projects. The Walking Festival along with a host of other local initiatives gives me cause to reflect upon the recent milestones in our town’s regeneration. This month also marks the tenth anniversary of my own election as County Councillor for Talgarth in June 2004. Many people have played a bigger part than me in building the success that we are now starting to enjoy, through appreciating and harnessing our beautiful environment, for the benefit of the wider community. It is a privilege, however, to have made a contribution, just as my own mentor, the late Lord Richard Livsey of Talgarth encouraged me to do. Meanwhile, within Powys County Council, I have been busy in recent weeks dealing with a number of issues. These include the ongoing fall out from the newly awarded domiciliary care contracts, which have impacted badly on many elderly, frail and vulnerable services users in the early weeks - as well as upon Talgarth’s own Caring Concern; keeping up the pressure to develop a comprehensive whistle blowing policy, so that all PCC employees can have the confidence to report suspected cases of illegal or detrimental activity - and this regardless of their rank - following the recent Wales Audit Office report. Finally, in partnership with Talgarth Town Council, local traders and residents and the Highways Department, we have taken forward the local car parking review to the next stage. The proposals with respect to amendments to yellow lineage, waiting restrictions and a number of other issues will be advertised shortly - please look out

for notices in town and in the press, as this is the final opportunity to have your say. As the sporting season moves on, with football and rugby giving way to cricket, tennis and a range of summer sports, our local teams can look back with some satisfaction on their achievements. In particular, the Talgarth Town Juniors have had an excellent season, being recognised in the Powys Sports Awards - and with the fantastic news that Harlan Perry, a founding player in the Junior squad, has been signed for the prestigious Swansea City under six Academy. On the Junior rugby side, Gwernyfed RFC has also gone from strength to strength - and the presentation event in the Clubhouse last Sunday was an absolute sell out, with the next generation of talent recognised at all levels. Particular thanks go to the coaches, referees and other unsung heroes who make it all possible. Whilst on the subject of selfless volunteering, I should congratulate six locals whose efforts have been recognised, by an invitation to this month’s Royal Garden Party - Mr and Mrs Tony Skyrme, following his award of the British Empire Medal; Mrs Josephine Rumsey, our longstanding Town Clerk and her husband Les and Mrs Cynthia Argent and Mrs Margaret Kite, for their dedication to the Talgarth Luncheon Club. They all richly deserve this accolade. I hope to see many of you at the forthcoming YFC Rally at Great House Farm and other community events. In the meantime, please contact me if you have any feedback or issues of concern on 07703 112113 or by email: william.powell@wales.gov.uk Alternatively, you can come along to my next advice surgery on Friday, 6th June from 5:00pm at Talgarth Tourist Information & Resource Centre. Best Wishes William

News from Glasbury Ward by Chris Davies Powys County Councillor for Glasbury I start this month’s column by saying how we have been so deeply moved by the recent loss of Brecon born L.Cpl. Oliver Thomas. The Afghanistan conflict seems so remote to us all living in this area but such a loss as this, brings home to us all just how proud we are of our service men and women. Our deepest sympathies go out to his family. At County Hall many changes are taking place. A major change is happening in the way the County delivers its care services provision and it is something that I will be keeping a very close eye on, so if you have any concerns please get in touch. The Cwmbach to Ffynon Gynydd road will be closed for repair from the beginning of June for six weeks following the recent landslide. We hope disruption will be kept to a minimum, but please look for an alternative route. The YFC has been very active in this part of Radnorshire with a very successful Fun Ride recently organised by Rhosgoch YFC. Whilst Talgarth YFC will

be hosting the annual Breconshire Rally at Great House Farm Talgarth on Saturday 7th June, which is always a great day out. The Royal Welsh Show is getting ever nearer with Radnorshire as this year’s Feature County. An Open Gardens day is being held at Llowes on 29th June with some beautiful gardens open to the public and refreshments at Llowes Court which will be well worth the visit. Celebrations are many and varied in this area. I had the great honour of attending a commemorative service at Cwmbach Chapel recently and it was wonderful to see every pew full. Liz and I are looking forward to attending a Grand Concert to commemorate Gwernyfed RFC’s 50th anniversary this month, which I’m sure will be celebrated in great style!!! The Rose Since before Roman times gardeners have revered the rose as the queen of flowering plants for the extraordinary beauty and scent of its blooms. The rose family offers an enormous range of colour, shape and perfume from the simple purity of the wild dog rose, the soft, pastel charm of the old garden rose or the jewel-like brilliance of the modern hybrids. Whether grown alone in the splendour of a formal garden or enhancing the quality of a mixed planting it is hard to imagine a garden without roses heightening the glory of a summer’s day. There literally is a rose for every part of the garden ranging from the low growing ground cover and patio roses, through the larger bush and shrub roses to the climbers and ramblers for growing up walls, arches, pergolas and even through trees. They all generally prefer an open, sunny site and a fertile soil. When planting, and each year as a surface mulch, it is important to add organic matter such as compost or well-rotted manure. For your roses to perform at their best, it is also vital to feed them, preferably twice a year in April and June, with a special rose fertilizer.

Methods there are many, principles are few… Having served the Fitness and Health Industry since 1997 (eek!), I’ve seen fads come and go in exercise and nutrition.. Let’s see : Aerobics, Step, Slide, Glide, Line dancing, Zumba, …. Atkins, the Cabbage soup diet, Grapefruit, Slim Fast.. And looking at this list you’ll know that some still have value and some seem, well, just a bit silly? We’ve all ‘been there’ because they are all very clever at their marketing. Us fit pros jump on the latest band wagon too – (or not, if you’re selective, or, in my case, too proud, to my eternal financial detriment!) – and we all get reeled in, as these methods are seen as a quick fix OR we’re just looking for a bit of fun, something new. The trouble is once these fads are gone, once ‘the party’ is over, they leave us with a vacuum, which can only be filled with …. Yet MORE hype, a new trend, new book, the next promise of losing a dress size overnight!

Box clever – look at classes and nutritional PRINCIPLES that never change. Sports science is ever evolving and this is a good thing but there are some nutritional foundations that remain constant. I can tell you NOW what is just about to hit the fitness scene and they’re GOOD, BUT we’re also just about to get REALLY busy in our sports injuries clinics for those who are any less than super fit. I can also tell you now there is a huge wave of new supplements just about to hit the shelves BUT they can never replace good, wholesome and REAL foods! If you want to be taken care of properly and ethically, with YOU and your body type, YOU and your fitness level considered get yourselves to a local fit-pro who can assess you as an individual. No hype! Article supplied by Cat Lawford Health consultant for Gym & Tonic

Local Talent: Rob Barnby and Lewis Day Artists Names? Rob Barnby and Lewis Day.

Designs in Birmingham.

Type of Artist? Furniture Designer/Makers.

What has been your proudest moment? Receiving a letter from Sir Terrance Conran (Habitat and The Conran Shop founder) inviting us to be involved with his next project which will be exhibited in the V&A Museum over the London Design Week!

Range of Products: Free standing furniture including desks, shelving units, coffee tables, wardrobes, sideboards and more. We also take on small commercial projects, most recently completed the furnishing of Wye Valley Canoes new bunkhouse chapel conversion. Where can your products be purchased? We make all our products to order, they can be purchased through our website at www.barnbyandday.co.uk Price range? Our products start from £195. How long have you been an artist? Lewis; Barnby and Day was formed back in 2012 and so I have only been operating under my own pressures for a short time. I learnt my skills working for a local cabinet maker during my A-levels, so I have been working with wood for roughly 5 or 6 years. Rob; I graduated back in 2009 and following that started to experiment with pieces that slowly began to turn into the beginnings of a range. Initially a lot of time was spent trying to kit out the workshop, was a bit of a shock leaving the University facilities behind! Where did you train or gain experience? Lewis; As I mentioned earlier, my making/learning experience was gained through a local cabinet maker (Zebra Design). My engineering degree at Swansea University also gave me some useful tools which can be applied to wood work. Rob; Likewise I also worked for Barty at Zebra Design where I met Lewis. I then went on to study Furniture & Product Design at Nottingham Trent University and took a placement year working for hb

What would you class as ‘your masterpiece’? Rob; Not sure on “masterpiece” but I suppose I do have a favourite design, that being the Frame Desk. This was one of my first designs for the range, and so I’m fairly attached to it! Have you any future plans for your work? The main plan is to continue to grow the brand and range. We are also involved with an exciting new London based spinning gym (Psycle). They already have one site just off Regents Street and we have a further two to complete by this time next year. It would also be great to get some of our products into some major London retailers. What advice would you give a local artist? Very cliché I guess, but go for it and stick at it. The highs outweigh the lows in the end...most of the time! What other local artists do you admire? Ryan Saxon, Ben Hills and Chris Armstrong, the list could go on. Their level of work is excellent and help and advice over the years has been much appreciated. Artist statement: Believing in Dieter Rams principle that “good design should be as little design as possible”. Our furniture has an intended simplicity to it drawing inspiration from Scandinavian design and its ability to create beautiful objects through simple and intelligent design.

Jokes of the Month by Father & Son

(Colan & James Badham) A man left for work one Friday afternoon. Instead of going home, he stayed out the entire weekend hunting with the boys and spending all his wages. When he finally got home on Sunday night, he was confronted by his very angry wife. After two hours, she stopped nagging and said: ‘How would you like it if you didn’t see me for two or three days?’ He replied: ‘That would be fine with me.’ Monday went by and he didn’t see his wife. Tuesday and Wednesday came and went with the same results. Thursday, the swelling went down just enough for him to see her a little out of the corner of his left eye!

Wild in June

Protecting wildlife for the future

For a few weeks from the end of this month Burnet moths will be flying. This one is a Six-spot Burnet taking nectar from the food plant of its caterpillar, Bird’s-foot-trefoil. My favourite place to look for moths and butterflies on sunny mid-summer days is Ty-Mawr meadows, halfway along the footpath between Llangorse lakeside and the small car park below Llangasty church. On a fine day there may be hundreds of Burnets, some settled on flowers, purple Knapweed is a favourite, many buzzing past as red blurs. With patience you might be able to find Five-spot Burnets among their more numerous relatives. In these lovely flowery meadows there will also be many butterflies, bees and other insects. You can find out more about Llangorse Lake at the website www.aroundllangorselake.co.uk, and a new printed guide and map is also available. As traditional meadows like those conserved at Ty-Mawr are now so scarce and intensively managed fields support little wildlife, our own gardens take on extra importance.

Brecknock Wildlife Trust will be promoting gardening for wildlife with displays and events this summer. To find out more, visit www.brecknockwildlifetrust.org.uk. Article by Keith Noble

Cariad’s Column

Launching July ‘14

“Hello everyone,

local family magazine

In April I went on holiday. I went on a air plane. JJ, my big brother came too. We played on a pirate ship that had slides, sprinkle things and lots of other little people. I went to the beach but didn’t like the sand in between my toes. The other day I went to a Moo Music class in Brecon. My Mummy took me.We got to sing, dance and play. You can read all about it in the Local Beacon, the other magazine. My Daddy and I have been busy planting vegetables. We’ve planted peas, onions, potatoes, carrots, courgetts ... A lot of them start off as tiny little seeds. Daddy says I will eat them soon. But if I eat them, I don’t think I will be full up. Good job I still have some Easter eggs left from the kind Easter bunny. I must go now, Hay Festival is calling. Lots of love, Cariad Mia Badham x”

Calming Chamomile

Castello de Haia

Chamomile is not only my favourite herbal tea at the moment but also one of my favourite plants to have in the garden. It is lovely with its apple-scented leaves and white daisly-like flowers.

Made in Hay New Chamomile & Calendula petal soap.

You can even grow Chamomile successfully in pots or window boxes. Pick the flowers when they are fully open and use about a teaspoon (fresh or dry) in a teapot or mug and add hot water; infuse for 3-5 minutes and strain for a homegrown healthy treat. The essential oil form is available as well – it has analgesic (pain-relieving) properties. Up to 8 drops swirled into a bath can help with those aches and pains. I have been using it in conjunction with other analgesic essential oils and can vouch that it has without doubt helped my aching back and arm muscles. Chamomile is said to improve your skin’s appearance and calm skin sensitivity. Our silky-soft chamomile and calendula soap with infusion of chamomile tea is an aromatherapeutic everyday treat. Recipe from Jekka’s complete herb book. RHS.

Gwernyfed Rugby Club 50th Anniversary Gwernyfed Rugby Football Club RFC is celebrating its 50th anniversary with a series of events to mark this unique year. To begin the year GRFC is holding a Celebratory Concert at Great House Barn, Talgarth (Vin Stephens farm, LD3 0RA) on 14th June. It will be a grand event featuring four choirs from towns that have regularly played against us over the last 50 years. So along with our resident choir, Talgarth, there will be the male choirs from Brecon, Builth Wells and Rhayader. This gives a combined total of 150 voices, so a unique and rich sound is guaranteed. On a warm summers evening this promises to be a hugely enjoyable event. The bar will open at 6.30pm with the concert itself starting at 7.30pm. It will finish at about 9.30pm and afterwards the choirs will remain behind for the ‘afterglow’ and do the second, informal part of the concert until late. Tickets are £10 each and can be obtained from The GRFC Clubhouse, Paper Shop, Siop y Bont and The Mill, all in Talgarth. Also by ringing: 01874 711975 or 07971 840786 or emailing: GRFC.Concert@yahoo. co.uk with details. D DISTRICT

The results of this year’s Local Landscapes Photography Competition Thank you to all the entries which were sent in to us. Yet again, proof of such amazing photographic talent in our area. To judge this year’s competition we had professional photographer Clare Williams who is part of the Wye Local team, Lynda Like who is our newest team member and has a love of walking in our beautiful area, and me, Lisa Marie, with a passion for photography and I just wish that I had more time to get out with my own camera! 3rd Prize: Laurie Higgins. ‘Mynydd Troed with rainbow’ The colours captured in this image are ... WOW.

1st Prize: Gareth Scanlon. ‘Last Light - Red Kite Over Llyn Y Fan Fach, Brecon Beacons’ All three judges were instantly drawn to the Kite in flight with Llyn Y Fan Fach as the back drop. We felt this was a very original entry, nothing similar has ever been sent in.

Highly Commended: Oleg Vityuk. ‘Sugar loaf frosty day’ What an unusual contrast, snow on the mountain with a Shepherd’ Delight sky. The results to this competition are now on our Facebook Page. Be sure to add your comments to the individual images.

2nd Prize: Will Lewis. ‘Mist over Llangorse Lake’

These, plus 9 other images have now been included

What a magnificent view of Llangorse Lake. The mist gave this image a lovely feel.

in the 2015 Local Landcapes Calendar. Out now in local shops.

Get fit this Summer

At Haygarth doctors, they are going to practise what they preach to our patients and get fit this Summer. Walking is simple and free, and regular walking can improve your health, help you lose weight, and reduce the chances of developing certain chronic diseases such as heart disease and diabetes. So on June 21st, a group of staff from Hay & Talgarth surgeries will be walking a 10 mile stretch of the Wye valley walk. They will be raising money for two important charities who provide excellent services locally - DIAL-A-RIDE and GUIDE DOGS for the BLIND. Please sponsor them and help to raise much needed funds for these two worthy causes. Sponsor forms are at Hay & Talgarth surgery reception desks and at local businesses. They will be very grateful for your support.

Join Our Team of Superheroes!

Hay & District Dial-a-Ride’s volunteers are really special and we would like to say thank you to them for giving over 5,000 hours of service last year! We travelled over 25,000 miles getting people to medical appointments, social clubs, shopping and more. New members always welcome - come and try out our new minibus!

If you are interested in joining our team, we have flexible volunteering opportunities for minibus/MPV drivers, passenger assistants and within the Community Car Service for drivers using their own vehicles. We pay for any training necessary and your expenses. As little as 2 hours a month can make all the difference to our members, so if you are friendly and sociable and would like to know more, call us or pop in to see us. The office is open from 9am to noon Monday to Friday.

News from Plan B As required by our constitution Plan B for Hay held our AGM on the evening of Friday 11th April. We would like to thank our members for a good turnout and discussion. The general consensus was that Plan B For Hay should continue to exist until it is completely clear how the new school will be funded and construction has started. Until that time there is still a possibility that the supermarket plan or a variation from developers is promoted. We will continue to engage with Powys County Council and its Education Portfolio Cabinet Member, currently Myfanwy Alexander, to get the latest status updates and will inform you when there is news to share. Thanks for bearing with us and if you have any questions or issues please contact us mail@planbforhay.org

News from Black Mountains Lions Club

The Black Mountains Lions were proud to be able to continue their support for Dial-a-Ride with a substantial donation towards a new 10 passenger seat Bus. More than 6,500 passenger trips per year are made possible by this fantastic service. Every day of the week and sometimes evenings and weekends as well, volunteer drivers transport members from Hay and the surrounding area. Dial-a-Ride is essential to a great number of people in the area, both aged & infirm, who rely on the service for hospital & GP appointments, shopping, social occasions etc. We all enjoyed a lovely sunny afternoon along with many others who gathered to celebrate the launch with birthday cake and bubbly.

News from Fairtrade Hay It’s been a while since our last update – but hopefully some of you have seen us either going bananas at Hay market, or selling fairtrade tea and coffee at Hay Spring Fair. We were delighted to contribute almost 100 signatories to Fairtrade Foundation’s 70,000 strong petition for fairer banana pricing. The petition has now been delivered to Vince Cable, so we’re hoping that the government will investigate unfair supermarket pricing practices and act to protect the producers of the UK’s favourite fruit. We raised around £250 by serving fairtrade tea, coffee and cakes at the Hay Spring Fair. We’ll be continuing to invest in shares from Shared Interest, providing financial services to fair trade producers, retailers, importers and exporters throughout the world.

For Issues February - July 2014 we will absorb the VAT increase

Students had developed fantastic work and as a part of celebrating their success their work was projected onto the school buildings accompanied by music of their choice. Students had researched different light festivals around the world and decided to have one of our own! All of the work shown has developed from practical workshops in the drama studio. Students were able to experiment with plasma balls, torches and glow sticks to create exciting long exposure photographs and designs. The Year 11 Catering and Hospitality students kindly sold an excellent assortment of cakes! The evening was a great success and it was fantastic to see Year 10 working so hard. Thank you to all those who came to support the Gwernyfed High School Light Festival.
