As many of you already know, Black Mountains Lions Club will be hosting their annual Bonfire and Firework Display on Tuesday 5th November at Clyro Court. Here’s hoping to a dry evening. Who’s feeling the Festive cheer? Perhaps you wait for the turn on of the Christmas Lights? Mac Eager will turn on the lights in Hay on Friday 29th November. When hearing this I was chuffed as Mac is as local as you get. You often see him around town in his Council gear. On the 30th November the Talgarth lights will be turned on. Both events are a chance to get the communities together.

News from Talgarth by Cllr.William Powell Powys County Councillor for Talgarth As I sign off my column this month, I can scarcely believe that we are approaching the countdown to Christmas once again. For people of all ages, it is a special time but it can also pose real challenges, especially for those who are lonely, anxious or finding it difficult to make ends meet financially. It is good to be mindful of this in the coming weeks. One remarkable aspect of the Christmas season this year is quite how much progress has been made by local businesses, both in terms of the shops and also the hospitality sector. Unlike just a few years ago, it is now possible to get a wide range of gifts and full selection of seasonal food locally, on our own doorstep. Likewise, there are real options for those who may want to have lunch or a drink in the run up to the festive season.

Another boost for businesses locally comes in the form of the Countryside Alliance Annual Awards, nicknamed the ‘Rural Oscars.’ Nominations are open until 1st November, but I understand that both the Deli Pot at WJ George Butchers and The Baker’s Table Café at Talgarth Mill have been nominated in different categories for the 2013 competition. In previous years, it has been my pleasure to welcome the team from WJ George, and also Chef on the Run from Hay on Wye, to the Senedd for the awards ceremony. I wish both businesses every success, as it is great for hard work and innovation to be celebrated.

As recently as four years ago, a survey carried out for the Brecon Beacons National Park Authority identified a retail vacancy rate of over 40% here in Talgarth. With the last shop having just been let in Phoenix House, High Street, that rate is now effectively reduced to zero. Such a turnaround is little short of astonishing, especially given the difficult financial climate. It is only right to salute those who have embraced the opportunity to invest in our town, as well as those whose efforts have helped to create the level of confidence to make it possible. It is perhaps no coincidence that the Centre for Regeneration Excellence Wales (CREW) is holding a national seminar in Talgarth later in the month.

In this context, many local people have expressed surprise and disappointment that a planning application has been lodged to seek change of use on 2 & 3 Bell Street, to enable the former shops to be converted into flats. I know that the

Town Council has held a special session to consider its response. The upper floors of both have been reinstated to a high standard as self-contained flats, with assistance from Powys County Council’s Private Sector Housing section. However, I recall Lord Livsey’s vision of those shops flourishing once again and his commitment to retaining them. Given the wider picture of Talgarth regeneration – and the real progress made over the last few years, – it is a view that I still hold.

News from Glasbury Ward by Chris Davies Powys County Councillor for Glasbury At the time of going to print we are all holding our breath at Powys CC as we await the funding settlement from the Welsh Assembly. The forecast is not good and with the directive that ‘statutory services’ like Adult Care and Education cannot be touched it appears that difficult decisions will be made in other areas. Powys has received the lowest settlement in Wales for five out of the last six years. It is a pity that we have allowed our politicians to accept this without successful challenge. Let’s see what the future brings!

Christmas gift ideas

Even in difficult economic times local community spirit always shines through as was shown recently with a number of Macmillan coffee mornings held in the area. My wife and I attended two of these events and our thanks and congratulations must go to Marian Lally and her team at Llanigon along with Jane Nicholls and her team at Painscastle not to mention everyone who supported these events. Between them nearly £2,500 was raised for this most important charity. There are some great events taking place in the

ward in November. The first hosted by Glasbury Arts is the 10th Annual Visual Arts Exhibition at Glasbury Village Hall on the weekend of 1st – 3rd November. A great local success story. The second is the Annual Fire Works display at Clyro Court on Tuesday 5th November. This is hosted and organised by the Black Mountains Lions who do so much to raise money for local good causes. The gates open at 6-15pm and the fireworks start at 7pm so bring the family along for a great evening out. The Radnorshire Committee of the Royal Welsh Show are hosting ‘Radnorshire’s Got Talent’ on Saturday 23rd November in Painscastle Village Hall. If you can sing, dance or play the spoons – you are welcome to enter. If you just wish to come along and enjoy the local talent, tickets will be available on the door. Fairtrade Hay have had a busy couple of months. We had stalls at the Butter Market in August, selling products made by the Zabaleen garbage collectors of Cairo. These included some wonderful iPad cases made from silk ties collected from Hay. We also ran a tea and cake stall at the welcome party for visitors from Timbuktu which raised £140.

It has been a hectic summer for Hay Together with renovation and decoration taking centre stage. After a lot of work our new Community Hub and meeting spaces up the Cobbles beside the Castle are looking great. Posted outside the enormous map of Hay, kindly donated by Ordnance Survey, is already turning into a mini tourist destination. There is also a large outside community noticeboard. We intend to have the Community Hub open on a regular basis very soon.

It’s not too late to organise your Festive celebrations!

For the second month running we include some suggestions of where to book that all important Christmas Works Party. In fact whilst I write this, I’m putting a note in MY diary to organise the venue for my team as soon as this issue goes to print! November and December always proves to be busy with social events, so the sooner I get this done, the less stressful it will be. My plan will be to ring a few of the local restaurants, ask them for their menus, show them to the team – and book a date that everyone at Wye Local and Local Beacon can make. Hopefully taxis, childcare and fancy dress costumes will fit around this nicely!!! If family are coming to visit in the run up to Christmas, book somewhere in advance for a sociable meal – think of all the washing up you won’t have to do! Whatever your plans, I hope you experience good food, fine company and have a jolly good time!

‘Have Yourself a Very VINTAGE Christmas’ The last weekend in November is promising to be a shopping extravaganza for Hay-onWye. Not only do we have the turning on of the Christmas lights on Friday 29th November, followed by the Food Festival on Saturday but on Sunday 1st December things will get VERY Christmassy. Encouraging this is the ‘strolling fashion show’, back by popular demand. This year it will be co-ordinated by Kate Sly who offers personal styling and colour analysis at Fashion Farmer. Kate will be showcasing how to wear vintage fashion for different body shapes and ages and will be on hand to offer tips with Naomi doing the make-up on the models. Also back by popular demand in the Marquee is the Travelling Tearoom, serving teas and delicious homemade cakes all served on vintage bone china. News from Gwernyfed High School At the start of October, Gwernyfed High School opened its doors to pupils and parents from the primary schools, for an action packed Open Evening. Sixth formers, acting as tour guides, welcomed the pupils and parents and took them around the school, introducing them to staff and providing information on the provision at Gwernyfed. Staff and Pupils were available to showcase every department with interactive activities and information on the course of study. Activities ranged from spectacular interactive science experiments, to map reading challenges in geography, and engaging drama sessions. There was also a pupil quiz to complete with prizes! Parents and

pupils took the opportunity to look at current pieces of work and talk to both teachers and pupils about the subject areas. Parents commented on the ‘great community feeling’ at Gwernyfed and their recognition of the school as ‘a caring environment with the success and happiness of pupils at its heart’. News from Hay Cheese Market Building work on the Cheese Market has begun! This is an exciting landmark in the projects own history, since it has taken nearly six years of voluntary effort to reach this stage. From now on you will start to see the changes taking place. Scaffolding will be erected and repair work will begin – to the cracks in the walls, the roof and the gaps in the gable ends and so on. It is also when refurbishment will start to take place, in terms of removing the breezeblock toilet, reinstating the old iron railings and transforming the first floor into accommodation.

In the meantime we will try to cause minimal disruption. A few car parking spaces will be lost in the Memorial Square car park while the scaffolding is up and some of the trade pitches at Hay Market will be moved slightly in order to create space for the builders. After a lot of hard work securing visas and some hastily rearranged plans, we were delighted to welcome teachers and midwives from Timbuktu to Hay for a weeklong visit.

The group received a warm welcome from people in Hay, and were able to spend time with several community groups including Hay Feminists, the Hay Choir, Hay on TV, local potters and musicians. The groups in Hay have been left with plenty to think about in terms of how we can build links and support our twin town further in the future. This could be through raising funds for much needed equipment such as computers, sending medicines, or funding counselling for women who suffered sexual violence during the recent troubles. The midwives and teachers found their visits to schools and hospitals incredibly useful. Whilst they are in desperate need of better equipment, they were able to learn techniques that may improve their ways of working in Timbuktu. The teachers met with funder organisations in Cardiff and it is hoped that we can provide support for additional English language teaching in schools over the coming months. The Thoughts of a Greengrocer I finished last month by telling you that I was going to have a few days off and I used these to go over the Channel to France. I have always enjoyed driving on the French roads as they are quite empty compared to ours. I went as far as Chinon in the Loire Valley. It is noticeable that the prices over there are now much on a par with ours for food.The big difference between food shopping in France and at home is the fresh food in the major supermarkets. Fruit and veg. is frequently from a local grower and little of it is pre-packed. Also I saw that the supermarket is willing to sell produce for flavour rather than looks. Little bits of scab and other marks don’t matter. Root vegetables are still dirty with soil on them and so on. Because we have become so used to the extra clean, evenly shaped, identical sized under-ripe stuff I would struggle to sell some of what I saw. The other thing that took my interest was the wine for sale. This was mainly local wine with a fair bit of other French types and a tiny shelf of foreign wines. The prices impressed me so I took more notice than I have done in the past. We know that the French don’t have alcohol duty on each and every bottle as we do and this makes an enormous difference particularly when vat is charged on the duty paid. The net result is that a simple but nice bottle of wine in France is likely to be half or less than the same bottle in Britain.

Back home we are still seeing plenty of local apples and we are almost onto the local pears. Plums and so on are finished but suddenly only today (I write this article on the 14th of each month) I have some local quinces brought in. I have enthused about these before but the jelly that can be made from them is gorgeous and adding some grated into apple pies and crumbles makes a big difference; or just leave them in the kitchen for the sake of the scent. In Birmingham there is still a lot of talk about building a new whoelsale market on the outskirts of the city - depending on which side this could seriously help or hinder us on our visits to market - perhaps I’ll be retired before it is all settled. Bryngwyn Riding for the Disabled Group

Bryngwyn Riding for the Disabled (RDA) Group is celebrating its second year of riding. The Group based at Bryngwyn Ridng Centre, near Painscastle has been running since May 2012 and now provides riding sessions for up to 15 children every other Saturday. The Group also now offers sessions for adults that can be tailored to suit specific needs and requirements.

Highlights this year have included the Summer Fun Day, to which over 100 people came. Entertainment on that day included a musical ride performed by riders from Bryngwyn Riding Centre, a dog show and a demonstration by all the riders from the RDA Group. The Group is also very grateful to all those who provided donated goods for the Charity Shop, which was organised in Llandrindod Wells in September. This raised £1,345 which will go towards purchasing new resources for the Group, such as special equipment and riding hats.

Comfort food for cold nights Homity Pie IngredIents Cooking spray 340g potatoes, peeled and cubed 225g onions, chopped 225g leeks, thinly sliced 198g frozen peas 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped A handful of fresh parsley, chopped A handful of fresh thyme, chopped 2 eggs, lightly beaten 85ml of vegetable stock 160g Cheddar cheese, grated Salt and freshly ground black pepper

PreParatIon metHod Preheat your oven to 220°C/425°F/Gas 7. Spray a medium-sized, ovenproof dish with low calorie cooking spray. Boil potatoes for 15-20 minutes, or until tender. Drain return to the pan and mash. Set aside until needed. Spray a large non-stick frying pan with low calorie cooking spray and stir-fry the onions, leeks and peas over a medium heat for 6-8 minutes, or until the vegetables have softened. Add the mashed potatoes, garlic, parsley, thyme eggs, stock and half the cheese, season and stir to combine. Spoon the mixture into the prepared ovenproof dish and scatter over the remaining cheese. Sprinkle with salt and a few grinds of pepper. Cover the lid of the saucepan. Sweat on a gentle heat for approximately 10 minutes. Meanwhile, bring the stock to the boil. When the vegetables are soft but not coloured add the boiling stock and continue to cook for about 1015 minutes or until the vegetables are soft. Add the milk and purée the soup in a blender or food processor.Taste and adjust seasoning. Serve sprinkled with a few freshly chopped thyme.

What has been your proudest moment? Janine’s many challenges include walking a tightrope in a circus show, hanging upside down playing sax, co-presenting BBC TV Playaway. Sue is proud of hanging upside down when abseiling down a viaduct (not intentionally). Both are proud of launching an independent Theatre Company for the benefit of the local community and receiving their first grant from Arts Council Wales to produce a new piece of theatre. What would you class as ‘your masterpiece’? Janine was commissioned to write and direct an adaptation of The Borrowers for The Courtyard Theatre, Hereford which completed a successful tour of major UK theatres. Sue made a tree from carpet underlay for Hay Theatre Club’s Christmas Show and performed from inside it (tee hee!). Have you any future plans for your work? Hay Theatre CIC are using their first small grant to write and produce a drama based on oral history. This idea came from a living history project Janine initiated called ‘Storytrain’, set on the Golden Valley Railway. Now the new ‘Reflections’ project will collect stories from senior members of Hay community through workshops and use them to develop a play. This drama will be performed in the form of a LIVING SCRAPBOOK at The Globe in October 2014 accompanied by an exhibition and a pop-up scrapbook. What advice would you give a local artist? Don’t give your ideas away. What other local artists do you admire? News from Hay Town Council Putting the clocks back is the cue each year to start thinking about the coming winter. One of the most important dates in the autumn calendar is Remembrance Sunday, which this year will be on the 10th November. We will meet at the Town Clock ready to leave at 9.30am for the parade to St Mary’s Church where the Remembrance Service will be held. We will return to the Cenotaph for the Act of Remembrance and laying of wreaths at 11.00am. We would like to encourage you to join us as we remember those who gave their lives for the peace and freedom we enjoy today. Preparations are already underway for the Senior Citizens’ Christmas Lunch. We try very hard to make sure we invite all Hay’s older residents, and we’d like to ask for your help in reaching everyone this year. If you know of

someone who would like an invitation, please ask them to contact Hay Dial-a-Ride on 01497 821616 and add their name to the guest list. Some members of Hay Town Council are members of a group looking at Affordable Housing in Hay. There is currently a shortage of decent, affordable homes nationally and this group has been exploring ways of addressing the crisis in Hay. The group produced an excellent report on their findings, and the Council was pleased to recommend it to the Brecon Beacons National Park Authority and Powys County Council for their consideration. The next Town Council meeting will be on Monday 4th November at 7.00pm in the Council Chambers. You are very welcome to attend, and we look forward to seeing you.

We are very fortunate to have the historian Maureen Passey coming to tell us about the world famous Herefordshire School of Stone Carving of which she is a notable authority. News from Totally Local Totally Locally is coming to Hay, and we have been busy getting out and about to meet as many local businesses as we can. If we haven’t spoken to you yet – we’re sorry! Do please drop us a line via Twitter so we can catch up. Totally Locally has been really successful in towns like Hay up and down the UK with a simple message about supporting your local, independent shops and businesses. It’s not about being anti-supermarkets or anti-internet; most of us will use a big supermarket or buy online from time to time. It is about stressing the importance of a thriving local economy and the benefits that choosing local suppliers can have for all of us.

The average age for women to go through the Menopause in the UK is 52. Symptoms might include night flushes, sleeplessness, fatigue, insomnia, joint pain, and irregular periods, less sex drive, or none of these things! As we approach this age we become concerned with how we’ll ‘go through it’. As I’m reaching this age I feel the same way (!), so I recently did a brilliant course on the menopause (MP), and learnt an awful lot more. I have a lot of women at the Club at this stage of their lives and I wanted to be ready to help them. It’s a vast subject and defines a time in a woman’s life which can be more than a little scary, and one of bewilderment as we enter the post child rearing years.

As we go to print we are planning our first public meeting at The Swan. We hope that some of you were able to make it along! However, Totally Locally isn’t about long meetings, or committees, agendas and minutes. It’s also definitely not a competitor to organisations such as the Chamber of Commerce, WI and Hay Together who already do an amazing job of working for the people of Hay. We want to work with all interested local groups to stress the value of choosing local. We hope to formally launch Totally Locally Hay as part of the Winter Weekend at the end of November. Keep your eyes peeled for more news on our Twitter feed - @totallyhay – or on our Facebook group. Our independent businesses are part of what makes Hay such a special place, and hopefully Totally Locally can play a role in supporting their continued success.

There’s a way to know if your night sweats are Adrenal fatigue or the Menopause – get to our special night and I’ll reveal all, and plenty more!) • If you need to lose weight do it NOW. Estrone is produced post PM – this is stored in your fat cells – so it’s t’s so much harder to lose fat once you’ve hit the menopause. Clean up your diet and re-boot your system. Take toxins OUT! Many play havoc with your hormonal systems anyway (again I have far more on this…) • Get to bed and asleep by 10.30am 5 night a week. This will also help to keep Cortisol levels in check! (You’ll also feel amazing for more sleep)! I’ll reveal a great trick to get you back to sleep I learnt when I did Hypnotherapy (if it’s good enough for NASA....)!

(Or flip it!): It CAN also be highly liberating:.You care less what people think as you gain life’s experiences, find more confidence, have less immediate worries with the day to day care of kids, and of course, you don’t need to find the money every month for sanitary wear or be concerned with contraception! (as a consequence sex life often improves!). I’m going to be putting together a ladies night (see below) - where we can all get together to discuss all these issues and solutions – the good and the bad, but in the meantime here are some bullet points (I only have so much room here and there’ll be a lot of questions I guarantee it). Through all this remember - many sail through it with no or few problems! Preparation is key! Here we go – top tips:

• Eat plenty of: red onions, garlic, and cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, kale, cabbage (all steamed). These contain 3 Carbinole – great for detoxifying.

• Keep a very open mind as to what’s available. It’s an extremely individual experience. I avoid all pharmaceutical drugs IF I can but if all else failed, and I was suffering – stick that patch on my butt! Look at alternative medicines such as Black Cohosh. Also look at be-spoke bio-identical hormone therapies. Find a practitioner in this and although perhaps expensive the prescriptions given are mixed for YOU - not generic as with HRT (although HRT works for many). I have many more ideas to help (too little room here)

• Add resistance training to your routine. You know from so many previous posts I’ve written here for Wye Local just how much I endorse this training for ALL. Added to this it is anti-osteoporosis – post MP women can be prime candidates for this condition. It’s a win-win.

• DE-STRESS. There’s an extremely fine line between the symptoms of MP, and adrenal fatigue. You MUST look after your mental health, get good quality sleep, and care for yourself. If anything I’d treat a client FOR adrenal fatigue first, (never any harm done) and see what gives with ‘menopausal’ symptoms, as supporting the adrenal glands allows for a more appropriate stress response, levels out cortisol spikes, restores sound sleep, and, so provides for a more physiologically balanced sex hormone profile. Take time out for yourself. Do all

• Reduce (but never abandon) carbohydrate. Especially on days when you have no exercise (carbs are a FUEL source). Make your carbs well timed (Intra workout), and of a good quality (whole-grains, & vegetables and NOT sugar laden)! Sugar and stress sit on the tummy! • Drink Passionflower, camomile, and Tulsi tea post noon to again reduce Cortisol (are you seeing a pattern here!), ready for bed. Avoid caffeine after noon too.
