I decided to have a bit of a shake up for the Get to really know feature this month. What better way than to make my dad, Adrian Williams this months victim! A few months back I received feedback from a reader saying that we must try harder to ask characters from our area, those who know my dad will know he’s certainly a character - with a nickname of Pants you really can’t argue!
September Competition Jackson & Gill Opticians have very kindly offered a prize to this month’s Competition Winner: A free eye test AND a free hi-tech OCT Scan which is a 3 dimensial scan. A prize worth winning! Please complete the wordsearch on page 47 and send to us by 16th September 2013. Winner of last month’s competition: Sue Davies, Llowes
We have two months left of our Car Boot Season - please do support us and Hay Primary School before they’re over for another year. Do be sure to check Facebook for updates, last month we had to cancel due to the weather. Boo hoo.

News from Talgarth by Cllr.William Powell Powys County Councillor for Talgarth Over recent weeks we have welcomed many visitors to the town and its stunning hinterland, with all that it has to offer. The bilingual Talgarth Rural Alliance banners around town very much emphasise that we are conscious of the privilege that we enjoy living here – and that sharing it with genuine hospitality is both a natural instinct as well as being good for the local economy. Brecon Jazz Festival, the Brecon Fringe, the Three Cocks Vintage Rally and the Green Man Festival have all been real successes – enjoyed by locals and visitors alike. At the time of writing, Talgarth Festival of the Black Mountains and the one day Talgarth Walking Festival promise to deliver a really special August Bank Holiday weekend for all. I have taken the opportunity of the last few weeks to follow up on casework issues brought to me by local residents as well as making visits in my wider region of Mid and West Wales. I have met several young and growing families around Talgarth in real housing need and have resolved to redouble my efforts to support them. Few things are more compelling than to see a family in genuine need of re-housing – and facing what must seem at its worst like a faceless treadmill of bureaucracy and housing points. The root cause, of course, is the extreme shortage of housing, following on from the disposal of council housing in the 1980s and 1990s, without appropriate investment in its replacement to meet future needs. While nothing in housing supply happens overnight, there is however cause for cautious optimism.
partner organisations and the local community to make this development one of which we can all be proud. Their decision to involve pupils of Talgarth School in selecting the names of the individual houses – Ty^ Daffodil, Ty^ Rhosyn, Ty^ Derw and Ty^ Ceirios – is particularly special. This kind of local involvement and Melin’s commitment to environmental protection both bode well for the future. I am pleased that Melin are developing their interest locally, both on this site and elsewhere in Talgarth, and look forward to meeting their representatives in early September to share perspectives on this important work. During National Allotments Week in August, I had the chance to visit the Woodlands Avenue allotments, to catch up with Roy Jones and fellow members of the Allotments Association and to see the recent investment made by Powys County Council. The provision of mains water will be of real benefit to current and future allotment keepers. In addition the major drainage works undertaken above the site will protect not only the allotments, but also homes in Woodlands Avenue below. On behalf of the Association, Roy wishes to thank Steve Butcher of Powys County Council and the Jones Family of Great Porthamel Farm for their cooperation in facilitating these works. If you have any feedback or issues of concern, please contact me on 07703 112113 or by email: william.powell@wales.gov.uk Alternatively, please come along to my next advice surgery on Friday, 6th September from 5:00pm at Talgarth TiRC. You can also pop into the TiRC at any time to request a call on any issue of concern to you.
One reason for my optimism is the work already undertaken by Melin Homes on the Trefecca Road site, to plan the development of four much needed homes on the site provided by Welsh Government, as a legacy from the land that was acquired in order to construct the Talgarth Relief Road which opened in 2007. Melin has been actively engaging with

News from Glasbury Ward by Chris Davies Powys County Councillor for Glasbury At the time of writing the summer holidays are in full swing and the new school term is just around the corner. For many this will mean a big change as children change schools or will have entered the big world of university or full time work. In my house it’s hard to believe that our youngest daughter is making the big jump from Caterpillars into full time school – where has the time gone? It is very disappointing to think that our community in the Painscastle/Rhosgoch Valley will no longer have the choice of sending their children to the community school of Rhosgoch. I have been involved over the last year in the fight to keep the school open and I would like to thank the parents, staff and the community that surrounds the children of that area for their courageous and dignified fight to keep the school open. Both Liz and I were delighted to attend a concert of the Monday Choir recently at the beautiful Bettws Church high above Clyro. This was to raise
funds for Hay Community Support, which has recently announced that it may have to close due to funding issues. This would be such a great pity especially as this long standing group has done so much over so many years to serve our community. Liz and I recently attended the Rhosgoch YFC Chairman’s diner at Rhosgoch Golf Club. Many congratulations to all the officers and members on such a wonderful 70th year. Also many congratulations to the organisers of both Llanigon YFC Show and Llyswen & Boughrood Show for all their hard work in making both events a great success. Please don’t forget that should you wish to contact me please do so on either of the following 07855 752110 or cllr.chris.davies@powys.gov.uk Best wishes Chris

News from
The Festival of British Cinema Readers may be wondering why they have heard nothing about this year’s Festival of British Cinema. The Festival, which began in Hay on Wye in September 2009, has attracted audiences from far and wide, put on an eclectic range of British films, both new and classic and hosted talks from a variety of Directors. The Festival is unique in screening only British films, recognising this the Film Agency Wales has given financial support since its inception. The team of dedicated volunteers who have delivered the festival have now reached the point where we acknowledge that we should expand to become a national showcase but do not have the person power or the industry connections to make this happen. We have been in talks with the successful Borderlines Film Festival and are delighted to announce that, following a feasibility study this year, they will take over the running of the festival. It will still be in Hay and the locals who have supported us over the years will still be wanted to help run the actual weekend. This year then we are taking a break prior to a relaunch and rebrand in 2014. However the Festival of British Cinema will be putting on special events throughout 2013/14, screening British films plus Director’s talks. We have already shown the brilliant GOOD VIBRATIONS at Booths Bookshop cinema with the two directors coming over from Belfast to introduce it. Our next event is on October 19th at Talgarth Town Hall, PROJECT WILD, an inspiring documentary about children’s relationship [or lack of one] with nature, introduced by film maker David Brand. We are so keen on this film we will be screening it free, but ticketed. Look out for more info in future issues of the Wye Local or check our web site. Jo Eliot, Chair Festival Group.

Glasbury Village This autumn sees two major Glasbury anniversaries; the 50th anniversary of the opening of the village hall and 10th anniversary of Glasbury Arts. Glasbury Village Hall was opened in 1963 following the donation of the land to the village residents by the de Winton family with the money to build the hall raised by the community. The hall is a registered Charity with all Glasbury residents as members. It very quickly became a focal point for community activity and thanks to a complete refurbishment in 2007 is again one of the busiest halls in the county providing excellent facilities for education, local organisations, parties (including wedding receptions), training and visual/performing arts. To celebrate this important anniversary the hall committee will be holding a hog roast on Saturday 7 September at 7pm. Tickets are £10 for adults, £5 for young people under 12 and available from Glasbury Garage or Hall trustees. The price includes the hog roast and entertainment with Rob Lee and Across the Board (folk, country and rock music). Come and join the party.

Glasbury Arts began life as a one off exhibition to raise money for the hall in 2003 but 10 years later it is an independent charity with an extensive visual and performing arts programme through the winter. Its base is Glasbury Village Hall and continues to financially contribute through hire fees. To celebrate this anniversary the Annual Exhibition is being held from 1st - 3rd November before the highlights are transferred to Cyfarthfa Castle for a six week show and will have some very special exhibits from nationally known artists. To help the celebrations along, Welsh National Opera will be returning to Glasbury for a singing day and recital on 2 November. Pick up a brochure or contact 01497 847426 to request one or go the website www.glasburyarts.co.uk or visit Old Forest Arts, Craft Centre, Hay-on-Wye or see the next edition of Wye Local to discover how you can join in the celebrations. Local Talent: Clarissa Price Artist Name? Clarissa Price
have done since and always attracts attention. Currently though it would be my ‘ram’, I’m very pleased with how he’s turned out and is the first piece of my work that I’ve made a set of prints from. He’ll be the piece I’ll struggle to part with!
Type of Artist? Pen and ink, watercolour and mixed media Range of Products? At the moment my work includes British animals, Welsh castles, still life, trees and life drawings Where can your products be purchased? All my current work can be seen during Hereford Art Week (H.Art), 7th-15th September, venue 102 which is being held in a workshop 3 miles from Bredwardine, just past the Castlefields pub on the B4352, just follow the pink signs. It is an exhibition with two other artists; Benjamin Hills, an award winning furniture maker and Tracy Thursfield whose creations include handmade shawls, hats and silk scarves. Otherwise you can contact me for more details - clarissaprice@ hotmail.co.uk Price range? £40-£250 How long have you been an artist? I have always had an interest in art and been creative, but only in the past 3 years have I had the time to start producing a range of work with the aim to exhibit it properly. So being an ‘artist’ is relatively new to me Where did you train or gain experience? I studied Fine Art at the University of Wales Aberystwyth, where I focused on drawing and book illustration. Since returning to Wales in 2011 I have taken a series of art classes at Hereford College to refresh my skills What has been your proudest moment? Handing in my degree portfolio after three years hard work, I still have it and look back on it for inspiration What would you class as your Masterpiece? It changes frequently but I am very proud of an abstract of Mont St Michel that hangs in my parents’ house, it’s a one off piece that is unlike anything I
Have you any future plans for your work? To carry on drawing, experiment with subjects and mediums and get some of my work in local galleries. I would defiantly like to pursue book illustration again, particularly children’s books What advice would you give a local artist? As someone new to this role I think I’d ask for their advice but I can tell everyone of an excellent framer who has done a wonderful job with my exhibition pieces; Jonathan at Forge Framing & Gallery in Eardisley What other local artists do you admire? Jean Miller – every year her work amazes me, the colours and vibrancy! Caitriona Cartwright’s letter work in stone is beautiful and Doug Eaton’s abstract tree paintings. There are so many talented artists in this area! Artist Statement: I love to draw; it really is as simple as that. This year I set myself the challenge to draw everyday as previously I would draw too infrequently. I now have sketch books full of drawings, some of which have developed into a series of works for example my snow themed mixed media treescapes, originating from a winter walk. My favourite medium is a pot of ink and a fountain pen; I like how I’m forced to get the lines right first time. I know within a few minutes of starting a drawing whether it’ll be a success and find constant inspiration from my surroundings such as the Welsh landscape, peoples pet’s or simple everyday objects.

The Thoughts of a Greengrocer It is a pleasure to be able to write without complaints about the weather. July was superb and this month is going very well. As far as the local crops are concerned the length of the winter has meant that some things are a bit late but otherwise everything is nice. The local soft fruit is, and has been, wonderful with the promise of damsons, greengages, plums, apples and pears to come. The imported peaches and nectarines have been excellent so far with far more of the flat varieties coming through. Local new potatoes are delicious and, when sold newly dug, scraping very easily. This month I decided to compare a few prices; this because one or two customers have been saying that I am cheap - they must be mad to encourage me! However, this morning I went to Waitrose in Abergavenny, Tesco in Belmont, Hereford, Co-op in Hay-on-Wye and lastly Castle greengrocers with a call at Chris Gibbons Butchers to get chicken breasts.
Tesco came next at £12.22 with chicken at £4.08 for 340gr and only packs of 4 nectarines. Staff obviously taught to be nice but slipped if thought to be unobserved. The Co-op in town cost £10.61, chicken being £2.30 for 250gr. Difficult to buy a weighed amount of loose items as there were no scales. Over staffed judging by the number of bodies around but the numbers were ineffectual giving no better service. Castle Greengrocers cost £7.39 for the veg and from Geraldine at Chris Gibbons the chicken was £3.42 for 414gr.a total of £10.79. Chicken per kilo was £14.39 per kilo at Waitrose, £12 at Tesco, £9.20 at Co-op and £8.26 from the small independant. All I can say is you pays your money and takes your pick! A full detailed comparison is available if you want it.
On the way there I found that the petrol prices were the same at Waitrose, Tesco and the independent in Crickhowell. Only Co-op wanted money to release a trolley. Living in Hay meant 40 minutes travelling each way to Abergavenny, 35 minutes each way to Tesco at Belmont and 3 minutes each to Co-op and my own shop. The prices came out much as I expected for a basket of 200gr. cherry vine tomatoes, 200 gr mushrooms, 1/2 Kilo new potatoes, a medium sized cauliflower (the same in every store at £1) 200gr carrots, a punnet of strawberries (400-450 gr) 2 nectarines and a basic price pack of two chicken breasts. Waitrose came to £14.36, the chicken was £5.73 for 398gr and the potatoes wouldn’t scrape. Staff all delightful.

Hello little and big ones! I am now one whole years old. For my birthday we were going to have a family get-together in the garden but it rained. It didn’t matter though as we went to Whitney Village Hall and we were able to hire it out for the afternoon. Village Halls are great for birthday parties. So much room ... I got to whiz round in my whizzie-walker after all my big cousins.

Last month we went on a family holiday and I went to the beach for the first time. The beach is such fun: I ate sand, made sandcastles, ate more sand, paddled in the sea, played ball games with Mummy, Daddy and James, and ate more sand! At nights we went to a Club House and me and Mummy had a bop on the dance floor. I love dancing.
Sand is so yummy!
Did you know there is a giant Bumble Bee at the Old Railway Line Nursery? He’s taller than my Daddy. He waves at all the children and grown ups. When they have Wild Wednesdays Buzzbie joins in all the fun and games. Make sure you go and see him. Love Cariad Mia Badham x

Are your recycling bins a problem?
You need the Bin Mobile
Goddard Engineering are a local engineering firm based in Ffrwdgrech Industrial Estate. When Powys County Council introduced the colour coded recycling boxes it became apparent to Ralph, owner at Goddard Engineering, that The Bin Mobile was needed. It has: good access to all four bins on the mobile; a galvanized finish for ultimate protection so it can live outside; large wheels that even make steps easy. Lastly the Bin Mobile is narrow enough to go through a standard doorway. The Bin Mobile can be stored outside and wheeled out on recycling day with ease and little effort. You will not get a high quality trolley like The Bin Mobile anywhere else.

“I now enjoy running. Something I never thought possible!” Earlier this year Gwernyfed Sports Centre sent in an advertisement for ‘Womens Walk To Run’. So before it even went to print I, Lisa Marie, had contacted Jo Lord to put my name down and the offer to run (excuse the pun) an article in a later issue of my findings of the course. What on earth had I done? Although I was thrilled with my first places in the 100m Sprint throughout High School - my last places in Cross Country were not some of my proudest moments! My commitment had been made, being work related I couldn’t run for the hills. The course was to last 12 weeks in total, meeting one evening a week for an hour, to include: warm up, gentle walk / run, and cool down. Arriving at the first session was a little daunting as I was going it alone. But straight away there were faces I recognised and people I knew. Throughout
each session Jo explained how we need to warm up and cool down - very important to avoid any injuries. Jo used to guide us on the actual running part by setting routes, run times, walk times - but the speed and distance was set by us as individuals. We were in total control of how much we pushed ourselves. We were a group of all ages, all sizes and all fitness levels. Sometimes we would run within the grounds of Gwernyfed High School, sometimes head off site towards Velindre. I couldn’t make all 12 sessions as sometimes I had no childcare for Cariad, but if I failed to attend I would run along the country lanes near my home when childcare was available. I soon figured out that running alone was no where near as enjoyable as running with other people. Being in a group used to spur me on, at times when I was struggling I would push myself a little bit harder to keep up with

whoever I was chatting with at the time. Sometimes we’d be so busy nattering that we’d not realise how far we’d run! Running Club, as we started calling it, became a fab way to have a good catch up with everyone - sociable as well as improving our health! Within the first three weeks I noticed an improvement in my general fitness. I’d just started up a local netball team and for me I needed to improve my fitness hugely so that I could play at League level. It was working but I had a long way to go ... Some weeks the sun shone, other weeks we had rain. But in fact I preferred running in the rain, it was a pleasant surprise and thoroughly enjoyed by all. On the twelth and final week, the group met at the Honey Cafe, Bronllys. Our route for the evening was to the Gwernyfed Rugby Club and back. If anyone had asked me to do this prior to ‘Walk To Run’ I would have refused and thought it unachievable. Now, having completed that distance (3 miles approx) in a good time, a feel of enjoyment and accomplishment, I am as pleased as punch! I do feel the cold cider awaiting me at the finish line helped though!
I have continued running, be it less frequent than I’d like. Various tips from Jo like making sure my shoulders are back so that my breathing can be easier will always be used in my running. To sum it up, it is a great way to improve your health, meet new people and maybe find a new fitness to enjoy. The good news is that ‘Womens Walk To Run’ is back, see advert. Please do have a go. You never know, you might like it! Perhaps you’re a keen runner already? Each Tuesday Jo Lord heads up Gwernyfed Running Club, 6pm (approx), the meeting point will often change depending on the route Jo chooses. In recent weeks they have run to the beautiful Witches Pool above Talgarth, across footpaths on the Offas Dyke and along the Wye Valley Walk. ‘Like’ their Gwernyfed Sports Centre Page on Facebook to keep updated of meeting points and times. Thank you to Jo Lord at Gwernyfed Sports Centre, because of you I now enjoy running. Something I never thought possible! Lisa Marie x

Colours that suit you – colours that don’t Some of you may know Kate Sly from the family run Clyro Garage. Did you know Kate also does Colour Analysis? Or do you even know what a Colour Analysis is? Colour Analysis is a key personal styling service offered to clients requiring help and advice on what colours suit them, how to wear and combine them and more importantly what colours to avoid. So, the objective of colour analysis is to provide you with a range of your most flattering colours - to help you look your best and co-ordinate your wardrobe more easily and make shopping more enjoyable and easier! Kate has recently set up business as Fashion Farmer and colour analysis is just one of the services she offers. This part of her business was something I was very keen to explore. For those who know me will know I wear a lot of colours, sometimes many all at once. You may also be aware of my slightly ‘out there’ fashion choices. For me, my clothes are important and it is a way I can show my personality and can uplift my mood for the day. I don’t actually enjoy shopping. Yes fellas you heard that correct! I find the whole task a little drawn out and somewhat infuriating at times. Now with the addition of Cariad, a clothes shopping trip is a rare occasion. So having a visit from Fashion Farmer Kate Sly was a great way for me to determine my colours and those to avoid. She determines the colour characteristics of skin, eye and hair colour. There is a science behind colour and she looks at in 3 ways: 1. Depth - how light or dark your colouring is 2. Clarity - how bright or muted your colouring is 3. Undertone - whether you have a naturally warm or cool undertone. Using the colour drapes, through the process of elimination the season will be determined: Winter, Summer, Spring or Autumn. She looks for the colours that don’t detract from you and seem almost like a natural extension of you, highlighting your features
and complimenting your natural complexion. As we went through the drapes, I sat in front of a mirror with natural light and no make-up I started to see how it all worked. Certain drape colours would make me look yellow, or they would mute my face, other colours would really highlight my cheeks and put instant, natural colour into my face. I turned out to be ‘Winter’ which was great news as I could continue wearing vivid colours. After this was determined we took a look through my wardrobe. Wardrobe Wedding is another service available from Fashion Farmer. There were many dresses and tops in my ‘Winter colours’. For those clothes that weren’t, ie colours for me to avoid, it didn’t mean I had to remove these, it just meant I needed to accessorise them differently with read scarves, cardies or jewellery that were in my ‘Winter Colours’. Kate also talked me though how I could make some alterations to some of the clothes I wasn’t so keen on. I’m all for ‘up-cycling’ my clothes! We discussed some key items that I may be missing from my wardrobe, this now makes an upcoming shopping trip much more enticing. Rather than looking round all the clothes in each shop I will just be drawn to my colours and key items on my ‘to buy list’. As well as the above, Fashion Farmer offers Personal Shopping, Wedding Service and Mens Styling. You may feel that in the current recession, this would be a luxury but in fact by receiving Kate’s services she could save you money on your clothes shopping, both now and in the future. Fashion Farmer promises to create longevity from your purchases and styles that will outlast the season again and again. Take a look at www.fashionfarmer.co.uk where you will find more information about the services available. Thank you Kate for a very informative morning, roll on the next shopping trip! New shop at the Cobbles, Hay Castle The Cobbles at Hay Castle is the new home of the thoughtful gardener and is selling a range of seasonal plants – many are hardy, which is to say they are suitable for the time of year and location. With every plant there is a helpful care guide which tells you infomation about where to plant and its after-care. The shop is set in the Old Stables – a Grade II listed building within the castle grounds, which has a great atmosphere and is a pleasure to be in. The thoughtful gardener sells amongst other things small to medium sized herbaceous perennials that excel either for colour, form, texture or just plain hardiness. Pop in and discuss any garden requirements and to find plants that most suit your particular garden needs. Also the shop sells Castello de Haia products. Soap made in the traditional way with spring water
from the Black Mountains, natural ingredients and packaged in organic muslin bags. Rosa Mosqueta lip-balms, aromatherapy mists, massage bars and body butters. All hand-made in small batches using carefully selected natural ingredients and the healing power of plants. You are invited to the opening which is on Saturday 21st September where there will be drinks, and a thoughtful gardener special cocktail with fresh mint. There will be a chance to buy plants at 10% off. Now is great time of year to be gardening. Hopefully garden designer Rob Kennett (gold winner at Hampton Ct. London) will be there to advise on garden design solutions. The fabulously stylish and ethically minded Eighteen Rabbit who are next door will be open and will be offering 10% off all products as well. The other cobbles shops The Hay Loft and The Old Curiosity shop will also be open for business.
PLANTS GARDEN ACCESSORIES BOTANICALS The Cobbles at Hay Castle is the new home of ‘the thoughtful gardender’.

To the Summit, by wheelchair! On Christmas Day 2005 Jonathon Harrington who lives at Tregoyd was walking on Cadir Idris when he fell off a cliff and broke his back. He was Before the start; raring to go! rescued by a RAF helicopter and flown to hospital in Bangor but within days realised that he was unlikely to walk again let alone climb. His Son, Jack knowing of his Father’s enthusiasm for mountains vowed that this would not be his last ascent of any summit and set about arranging a sponsored wheelchair push on behalf of a charity, ‘The Back Up Trust’ which would return his Father to the summit of the highest mountain in Wales. On July 6th Jack, together with a team of local friends pushed (and pulled) Jonathon to the summit of Mount Snowdon and by doing so raised well over £3000 for the charity which aids people who have suffered spinal injuries and by doing so gives permanently injured people a will to live.

The photograph at the end of the editoral shows the team ‘Harrington’s Hauliers’ at the summit; readers will probably recognise several well known faces including: Jack Harrington, Jonathon (in the wheeled buggy), Jordan Fforde, Sean and Julie O’Reilly, Dave, Dominique and Danielle Jenkinson, and Max Fry. The whole experience was inspirational for all those involved and the many people who had already reached the top burst into a spontaneous round of applause as they and the other teams arrived. Hay Senior Youth Theatre Way Hay away we go, the summer holidays are over, but the fun keeps happening! Hay Junior Youth Theatre aimed at 6 - 11year olds, has been running every Saturday morning for 5 years. The numbers just keep on increasing and there are now 27 members. Professional Director/Writer/ Performer/ Drama teacher, Janine Sharp who runs this group said, “They just won’t leave, even when they’re 12 and I don’t want them to, we have become like family over the years, I have enjoyed watching them grow and develop their individual skills.” It is for this reason that Janine has set up the brand new Senior Youth Theatre for 12-16 year olds. “So exciting!!! The Globe is a wonderfully artistic and creative space and they have been very supportive of my projects. I think any interested teenager will enjoy the professional
level of performance training they get and the stimulating artistic space that we practise in. The basement downstairs can become anything and anywhere if you develop your imagination and when there is no sunshine, well we just create our own. As an Arts Award Advisor I can also offer optional Bronze Arts Award training.”
Hay Senior Youth Theatre will start Saturday 14th September 1-3pm. That’s not all! Age and theatre know no boundaries.
Hay Theatre Club starts again Thursday 12th Sept 7-30pm. “Although aimed at Adults 21+ it touches the base root of creativity, the inner child, we have great fun.” Contact haytheatreco@gmail.com Tel: 07733055430

Totally Locally Totally Locally is a national campaign to get people excited about their local high street – and it is coming to Hay! Most people would miss their local shops if they weren’t there, and Hay is blessed with a wide range of thriving shops, cafes, pubs, B&Bs and other businesses. We get used to doing our shopping at supermarkets, and buying things online. The Totally Locally campaign isn’t trying to stop people doing that – just to make them think about whether they could divert some of their hard earned cash to local businesses rather than big multinationals. Over the next few weeks you should start to see posters for the campaign around town.
If you run a local business and would like to get involved, please get in touch – it’s completely free, and there are no long meetings or anything – we promise! Totally Locally has already been a big success in towns like Hay up and down the country. You can see some of the success stories at www. totally-locally.co.uk. To find out more, contact Shelley (shelleyfayelazar@mac.com), Amy (amymackintosh@hotmail.com) or Andrew (andrew@eighteenrabbit.co.uk).

HYPNOTHERAPY IN HAY
Fairtrade Hay
– JUDY SUTTON – CLINICAL HYPNOTHERAPIST
National Guild of Hypnotists, U.S.A.; M.N.C.H.(Int.)
WHY HYPNOTHERAPY? Hypnosis is a gentle, safe and enjoyable therapy that can enable you to make significant changes in your life. It is highly effective if you want to:
Did you know that Hay is a Fairtrade Town? You may have seen the leaflets and stickers in shops and cafés and wondered what it means. Fair trade is about better prices and working conditions for producers. A third of the world’s population live on less than a dollar a day and fair trade can help people live a more comfortable and sustainable life. Whether it’s coffee, bananas or fashion, choosing products marked as fair trade helps make a difference to the lives of people who produce the goods we rely on. The devastating Rana Plaza factory disaster earlier this year highlighted the importance of good worker conditions.
Hay’s Fairtrade Town status was awarded in 2008 and recognises the efforts the town has made to promote the value of fairer trading. A wide range of shops sell fair trade goods, from the Deli and the Co-op, to Hay Baby and Flow, to name just a few. We hope to showcase what local shops in Hay are doing to promote fair trade, as well as updating you on activities of the local Fairtrade group, in this bimonthly column. Hay also has a shop devoted entirely to fair trade products – Eighteen Rabbit, at Hay Castle, who stock a wide range of design-led items from around the world. With such a great range of shops in Hay promoting fair trade it’s easy to do your bit.

News from
Hay & District Community Support It is with great sadness that the only item of news from us this month is that we are to close at the end of September. Hay Community Support has been in existence for 27 years and I have been privileged to work for the organisation for 20 of those years. Funding has never been easy to obtain and we have never enjoyed a stable and secure existence, but the present financial situation has meant that it is no longer viable for us to continue. We will close as of 30th September, and our office door will close to the public on Thursday 19th September. We will be away with our last 4 day break to Kent from 20th – 23rd September and will spend the remaining few days of September in the final clearing out of the office.
On behalf of the trustees and myself, a very big thank you to all those who have helped over the years in so many ways and I am sure many will continue to do so under the umbrella of other organisations. We are presently working hard to try to ensure that our projects will continue in some form and more information will be made available as we become more aware as to what is to happen. On a personal note, I will be taking away with me some very happy memories of so many lovely people who have helped unstintingly within the community and those I have had the privilege to work alongside, particularly the other members of the Powys Community Support Network. The more vulnerable members of our community will no longer have somewhere to call into, so please look out for them and help all you can. Thank you to everyone and I hope that I will continue to see many of you around and about! Sandra Havard

News from Timbuktu
ACUPUNCTURE
Malians have voted in a new president after 18 months of conflict. A former prime minister, Ibrahim Boubacar Keita (known as IBK), will now attempt to restore infrastructure to the country. There are many problems facing the new government: the need to ensure that aid reaches the north of the country (including Timbuktu); the prevalence of armed groups, again in the north; and the need to restore the Tuareg cultural identity. Hay2Timbuktu and Medics4Timbuktu are hoping to welcome a group of midwives and teachers from Timbuktu on 21 September. At the time of writing the visas for the visitors have not been approved. We hope that the problems will be resolved and we can look forward to a productive and enjoyable visit. If all goes to plan there will be a community event to welcome the group so look out for posters around Hay and information on our website. Hay2Timbuktu are meeting with Roger Williams MP and the Department for International Development this month to update them on our work and request that Mali remains on the political agenda. Finally, a reminder that the cycling funded by Two Towns One World is every Wednesday evening. Details found at facebook.com/VeloHay Drovers on 01497 831561.

News from the Village Quire The Village Quire from Glasbury-on-Wye have had a busy year to date. We were really pleased to be on the line-up at the Fishguard Folk Festival earlier in the summer, performing to a great crowd, and to friends old and new. We have also been working hard, learning material for our new show, Precious Bane, the first performance of which is to be in September. The new songs written for this show by Dave Newell are inspired by folk-harmony singing, west gallery and shape-note music and early polyphony, plus a smattering of more ‘scrunchy’ harmonies. Precious Bane. Prue Sarn is blessed: kind and gentle, loving and giving, bright and brave and strong, witty and sensitive and with a figure like an apple-blossom fairy to boot. But she is also cursed; cursed with a hare lip. Would that her mother, being with child, had not chosen that hour to walk in the woods, but the hare did cross her path and the hare is the familiar of witches and child was marked for life. Precious Bane is Mary Webb’s story of love and ambition, set in Shropshire’s ‘lakelands’ at a time just after the Napoleonic wars. It is a story of faith and folklore, of pantheism and personal advancement. But above all it is a love story; the love of Prue Sarn for Kester Woodseaves. Through song and the spoken word, the Village Quire and actor, Phil Smith, bring a fresh telling of that story. Saturday 21st September, 7.30pm at St Margaret’s Church, Newton St Margaret’s, Hereford HR2 0QW. Tickets £8.50 from 01981 510629 / 07780 731990. www.villagequire.org.uk To advertise in Wye Local please call Clare: 07811 961983 or email: clare@wyelocalco.uk - 66 -
A man was driving through Hay with about twenty penguins in the back of his car. Just around the corner from the Blue Boar he was stopped by a policeman.
“You can’t drive around with a load of penguins - take them to a zoo!” The following day the same policeman saw the same man, again with a car full of penguins (he couldn’t tell if they were the SAME penguins). So he stopped him, this time just along from the clock tower.
“I thought I told you to take these to a zoo.” “I did”, the man said, “and they absolutely loved it! So today I’m taking them to the cinema in Brecon....” PS. The most surprising thing about this true story is the presence of a policeman in Hay on two consecutive days.......

Chill time is mahoosively important You must have heard friends, colleagues, or yourself bemoaning the fact you’re sick and tired of being sick and tired. Many of us are living a life that is fast paced, stressful, tense, emotional or either working hard or possibly frustrated by NOT being able to work. A sharp rise in hospital admissions for stress over the last year was widely reported recently, pointing out that more men were treated in hospital for stress than women. It seems the recession is mainly responsible. It’s that sense of being under too much pressure and if it persists can really affect your health physically (it literally alters your chemical composition), and psychologically. You may suffer from a lack of sleep, loss of appetite, find it hard to focus, get hypertensive, ulcers, and generally might not be the nicest to be around! Burn out is a possibility – it’s common in my Industry as it happens – too much working out, and the pressures of being self-employed can take its toll even for those who deal in health!
If our Club Induction questionnaire exposes a client to be highly stressed I have been known to keep them temporarily out of the gym and refer them only to our mind body classes and massage. The last thing they need is to be pumping even more adrenalin and cortisol around their bodies from a sweaty metabolic session – it’s counter-productive. My biggest surprise was when I did a deep relaxation class recently: all the ladies present went effectively under trance it was adorable! It’s the precious luxury of having the time set aside to just ‘let go’ and forget all our troubles for that period. Find this for yourself somewhere, ‘Cat Fit” is now a sub-company of G&T’s promise!? hence new logo!

The Rochford EnsembleMr Babb’s pop-up orchestra! Every year, as the autumn starts to set in, a group of musicians gather in Hay, coming from far and wide to rehearse and perform for an event that has become a real part of the Hay calendar, The Rochford Ensemble Classical Concert. Who are these musicians, you may ask, and why Hay? The answer to both these questions can be summed up as “because of Mr Babb”. Jeff Babb, a Hay resident, retired schoolmaster, musician and conductor, was a convener of musical summer schools for British and German young people for 32 years. The Rochford Ensemble, originally named after a hall in Lincolnshire, performed concerts every year to celebrate the end of these summer schools. The name stuck, but the venue changed. Fast forward to 2000, and many of the students had become successful musicians (this year’s soloist attended the very first summer school in 1972 and
now plays in The Berlin Opera House). Mr Babb, then only a frequent visitor in Hay, was asked to put on a concert for the millennium. He contacted his ex students, many of whom came, and have continued to come every year since. Their numbers are regularly swelled by new upcoming performers, and local people. Mr Babb now shares the work of this concert with a colleague, Keith Horsfall, but if you buy your ticket and come to the concert you will see him still in action with the baton! Don’t miss it!
