Most people believe that your adult life officially starts the day you turn eighteen. It's the time for teenage rebellion to end and the start of the new, more mature you. That piercing you wanted but your parents said no? They can't say anything now, you're an adult! Well, sort of…

Matrics are often left with a question after matriculating: what now? The transition from moody teenager to sophisticated, put-together adult is quite scary. For some, the fear is what to do now. No more 8:00 classes, slaving away during the day till the clock strikes 3:00. No more venting about stressful classes or being excited about subs. None of that! But it isn't all that bad. There are many ways how it can be a little less daunting for getting your life ready for adulting. This is a guide for that!

Everyone follows different paths in their lives. For some, it's going straight to uni whilst for others, it is the year where they try and figure themselves out. It's a good idea to just have a general idea of what the next chapter of your life is. If you want to keep it spontaneous, that's great too. This is the perfect time to figure out who you are.

Make goals for yourself. It's important to stay motivated. But if you are like some that feel burned out after high school, small goals are great too. Learn a new language by the end of the year? Great! Learn something about yourself through some heavy soul-searching. Even better! New hobbies? Sounds exactly like new opportunities. The world is your oyster. Everything is in the palm of your hand.

And most importantly, TAKE A BREAK. Twelve years can do things for people. Whilst it is important to stay focused and motivated to achieve your dreams and goals, it's important not to feel burned out. Life can sometimes hit you like a ton of bricks. It's good to know when it's time to just take a breather. Relax on the couch and find the most mind-numbing piece of reality TV to watch. And have fun, of course. You're finally free from the shackles of high school and work. Or for a little while at least. Enjoy life. We are constantly caught up in all the stresses of life that we often forget we are living on something that mainly consists of water and land that spins around on its axis. There's so much to enjoy around us. Take everything day by and take every opportunity that presents itself to you. Life is meant to be lived. Make the most of your amazing postmatric years now!
