South High Schools AP Biology students did an experiment using methane bubbles. Students would wet their hands with water, grab a handful of bubbles, and light the bubbles on fire. “It was weird because it looked like it would hurt since its fire, but it was really cool,” stated Angie Lohmann (12). Not only was this educational, it got more kids interested in science. “I like this experiment

because students get to experience something that seems dangerous but is completely safe. It is like a roller coaster experience. Also, this experiment is a great example of the heat capacity of water because the water around the bubbles absorbs all the energy of the fire, which is why the skin doesn’t get burned at all,” expressed Mr. Hushbeck (staff).

The NOPAL is a cactus, also called a prickly pear, endemic to Mexico. It can be eaten raw or cooked. There are a little over 1,700 species of CACTI (or CACTUSES). If you’ve lived in Cheyenne for any amount of time, you know the weather is unpredictable. Sunny and warm one minute and schools are closing the next. Even through postponed events, long bus trips, and questionable roads, the Thunderbirds just keep going.

The Speech and Debate team has yet to slow down. In early December, they competed at the “Heart of the Rockies” Tournament hosted by Cheyenne Central High. Students competed in both live and “asynchronous” divisions, and the T-Birds battled to dominate the event.

Ben Woolsey was awarded first place in Humor, Davin Ro received second, and Alyvia Hardy came in third place.

Senior Dani Schulz has turned into a machine for the T-Birds, scooping up trophy after trophy. At the Central event, she continued her winning ways, bringing home first in Oratory. Martin Mata earned second. Schulz also was second in Asynchronous Oratory, and Oakley Simons was in third place.

In Poetry, Schulz again stepped to the front to finish in first place, Ro came in second and Rachel West was third. Artery won first place competing in Asynchronous Poetry, Schulz came in second and Maddy Vandenberg took third place.

Ro earned first place in Info. Rosie Zubrod received second place, and Ella Goodman placed third place.

Jacob Schwartz and Emma Golden received Supers in the Congress Debate.

Other winners include West, first place in Drama, while Ro placed second, and Schulz third. In Duo, Clara and Ellie Kerschner came in second place. Christina Welch and Chloe Fitzgerald were third place. Ro won first place in POI, and Schulz was second. Rosie Zubrod took home second place in the Lincoln-Douglas Debate. Schulz received the first place award in Asynchronous Humor. Hardy took home second.

In mid-December, the Speech and debate team earned first place in the 4A Sweepstakes at two tournaments. While part of the team put on a show at Thunder Basin High School, the rest of the squad competed in a tournament hosted virtually by George Washington High School in Denver.

At the Thunder Basin event, Hunter Crawford took first for Senate, Clayton Keasling came in second, and Deacon Steiner placed third. Davin Ro took home third place in House. Keasling also won Supers in the category, as well as Oakley Simons.

Rosalie Zubrod finished second in the Lincoln Douglas debate. Rachel West took second in POI, with Dani Schulz following in third place. Schulz placed first in Drama and Poetry. West also finished second in Poetry and third in Drama.

For the Informative debate, Ella Goodman took home second. Aliyah Muzquiz and Camila Rivera tied for third in Public Forum

Rivera also placed third in Extemp.

Alyvia Hardy and Josh Thompson won first in Humor. Hardy placed second in Humor, with Thompson following in third. Nico Kaus won second in Oratory, while Zcherina Villegas came in third.

In the George Washington tournament, Schulz took first place in POI and Poetry, as well as third in Drama. Ro followed Schulz in placing third in POI. Goodman took home first for the Informative debate.

Thompson finished in second place for Humor. West also took second place in Poetry.

Wrestling

To be a wrestler is to learn to survive long bus rides, nights in hotel beds, and food at the local convenience store. Wrestlers only get a few chances to show off their skills to the local fans, and the annual Charlie Lake Invitational is one of the biggest stages. Over the course of the two-day tournament, the squad wrestled tough but also learned there was work to be done.

Charlie Green was the lone Charlie Lake champion, pinning Thompson Valley’s Sabastian Sanchez in 46 seconds.

East’s girls got titles from Elizabeth Grube at 133-139 and Kaelyn Ronnau at 143-152. Both wrestlers were 3-0 with three pins.

On the road, and at one of the best tournaments in Wyoming, the Thunderbirds showed off the lessons learned at earlier tournaments by taking third at the 29-team Shane Shatto Invitational in Douglas in mid-January.

The Thunderbirds got championships from sophomore Liam Fox at 145 pounds and senior Trevor Eldridge at 195. Fox was 5-0 with two pins, a technical fall and a major decision. Eldridge went 4-0 with three pins. Freshman Sammy Sanchez captured second at 106 pounds.

Cheer

Making a case for a strong showing at the State competition in late January, five Cheyenne East cheerleaders were named to the all-state roster in earlier this month.

East senior Emmaray Van Dell was tabbed to the team for the fourth time. East senior Ellie Swanson and sophomore Faith Vandemark earned their second all-state recognitions. Senior Ava Sutton and sophomore Loriana Walter earned their first awards.

The all-state roster is selected by the Wyoming Spirit Coaches Association. Cheerleaders submit videos during which they complete specific routines as well as stunts, jumps, tumbling and cheers. The videos are then scored by a team of judges who are not associated with any of the competing schools’ squads. Grade-point averages and coach recommendations are also part of the overall score.

Silent Witness Crime of the Week

The Cheyenne Police Department is investigating a recent surge of burglaries where criminals are targeting valuable items left inside of vehicles.

In the past 30 days, we have received more than 50 reports of these incidents throughout Cheyenne. In over half of these cases, vehicle windows were broken, while others gained access through unlocked doors.

Officers are contacting persons of interest and detectives are actively pursuing leads. We encourage citizens to exercise caution anytime vehicles are left unattended. Do not leave valuable items or firearms inside of parked vehicles and always remember to lock up.

Additionally, video evidence can be very valuable in these investigations‚ we recommend installing surveillance cameras in a location that captures parked vehicles. Anyone with information or surveillance video of these crimes is encouraged to contact the detective bureau at (307) 637-6513.

Information can also be provided anonymously through Crime Stoppers Silent Witness at 638-TIPS or silentwitnesslaramiecounty.com. You may be eligible for a cash reward of up to $1,000.00.
