KwaDukuza house fire results in multiple injuries
By Xpress Reporter
Five members of a KwaDukuza family sustained injuries ranging from minor to critical, after a house was gutted by fire, on Saturday morning.
According to IPSS Medical Rescue when paramedics arrived on the scene, the found that five occupants of the house had been rescued by neighbours and the
KDM Fire department, after being trapped inside the burning house. The neighbours reportedly used a vehicle's winch to pull down two gates and a palisade fence, in order to get access to the property, thereby allowing the trapped family members to escape.. This also allowed the Fire Department access to the property, in order to contain the fire.
“Two patients who sustained critical and serious injuries were transported to a specialized facility under the care of advanced life support paramedics,” stated IPSS Medical Rescue.
IPSS Medical Rescue also reported that the house was completely destroyed, with the family members being taken in by
the surrounding community. The cause of the fire had not been established at the time of going to press.
DA slams Ilembe over steep tariff increases
The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Ilembe district municipality has raised serious concerns about the tariff increases proposed by the municipality for the 2023/24 financial year, which is due to begin on the 1st of July 2023.
DA Ilembe District Caucus Leader Cllr Krsna Sing says as compared to the Consumer Price Index (CPI), which currently hovers at around
5.3%, the proposed increments of 9.5% for water and sewer will be an added burden for consumers.
“Load shedding is causing water outages on regular basis then this increase. Tariff increase must be cost reflective and affordable. Being saddled with tariff increase will further push consumers in a corner resulting in debt increase (debtors),” Cllr Sing stated.

Angry students shut down campus

Speaking t our Xpress
Times reporter, student leaders on campus said life had become unbearable for the affected students, as their
allowances allowed them to pay rent and also buy food as all of them live in off-campus accommodation.
“More than half of the student population have not been paid their allowances for three months. Some of our fellow students have even been kicked out of their accommodation due to failure to honour their rentals. This is unacceptable. Students cannot continue suffer like this while NSFAS is supposed to honour its
obligation to pay monthly accommodation allowances,” a student leader pointed out.
When Xpress Times arrived on campus on Tuesday (yesterday) morning, the campus was completely deserted, with all students and staff members standing off outside campus, amid heavy presence of security personnel.
The Regional Secretary of the ANC Youth League in the General Gizenga Mpanza
Centre celebrated the school's 40th anniversary on Friday last week. The day involved demonstrations by Badul Air Aviation and

Former KZN Sports Arts and Culture NEC, Amanda BaniMapena
By Xpress Reporter
The ANC in KwaZuluNatal has accepted the resignation of MEC for Sports Arts and Culture, Amanda Bani-Mapena, who has stepped down from her executive position with immediate effect.
Mapena's resignation was confirmed in a statement by the KZN Provincial Executive Council (EXCO), which extended a word of thanks to Mapena for her contribution whilst she was part of the KZN EXCO.
ANC Provincial Secretary
Bheki Mtolo said while the party has accepted Mapena's resignation as MEC, the
party has declined her resignation as member of the provincial Legislature (MPL).
“Comrade Amanda doubled her efforts towards ensuring that KZN maintains its spot as the host of national and international sporting events. Her hard work was based on the fact that she understood over the years, this province produced athletes and artists that are respected the world over.
“Our athletes and artists are respected because of their amazing talent not because of the colour of their skin. We acknowledge the fact that during her term of office she
pioneered the rollout of sporting facilities in deep rural areas and the townships.
“We are confident that the Premier Cde Nomusa DubeNcube will ensure the deployment of a capable cadre that will build on the foundation that has been laid by Comrade Amanda and many other deployees of the ANC before her,” Mtolo stated.
Meanwhile, the KwaZuluNatal executive Committee (EXCO) has acknowledged the contribution made by Mapena whilst in office. EXO said Mapena was “dedicated” to her work.
“The Executive Council thanked the MEC for her commitment and dedication to her work.
EXCO also expressed gratitude and appreciation for MEC Bani-Mapena's service to the people of KwaZulu-Natal and for the leadership she has provided in the department. EXCO wished the MEC well in her future endeavours.
“The Premier will make an announcement in due course about the appointment of a new MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture. The Acting MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture is MEC Bongi Sithole-Moloi who is also the MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs,” EXCO said.
A child (3) was ejected after a bakkie crashed into a wall
By Xpress Reporter
A 3-year-old child sustained critical injuries after being ejected from a vehicle, in Isithebe on Tuesday last week.
IPSS Medical Rescue reports that the child was sitting in the back of the bakkie, with two adults sitting in the front, when the
vehicle lost control and crashed into a wall, resulting in the child being flung out.
“The 3-year-old was found to be in a critical condition and additional resources were immediately dispatched. IPSS Medical Rescue's advanced life support worked to stabilise the patient on scene, while
the AMS helicopter was activated to the area. The child has been airlifted to a suitable facility for the urgent care required.
“The two adult patients were transported to a nearby facility for further care,” stated IPSS Medical Rescue. The cause of the accident is being investigated by SAPS.
New police station for rural community
By Xpress Reporter
A new, state-of-the-art police station is on the cards for the area of Bhamshela in Ndwedwe. This comes after the item was discussed at the ordinary meeting of the Ndwedwe Local Task Team (LTT), chaired by Mayor Samuel
Mfeka, recently.
The meeting heard how the Nsuze police station, one of the busiest police stations in Ilembe District, would be rebuilt closer to the town of Bhamshela.
Another point of concern for the LTT, and for the entire community of Ndwedwe, is poor cellphone network connectivity in many areas of Ndwedwe. The municipality indicated that it has taken note, and further engagements would be
embarked upon with the affected cellphone network operators in this regard.
Mayor Mfeka has also reported that the Community Safety Forum (CSF) had been successfully established. Its primary task will be to help set up Community Policing Fora in all the wards under Ndwedwe Municipality.
The LTT also discussed at length the growing problem of teenage violence in Ndwedwe schools.

New Bill to fast-track workplace equity
Vincent Magwenya
President Cyril Ramaphosa has signed the Employment Equity Amendment Bill of 2020 into law.
This was announced by Presidential spokesperson Vincent Magwenya during a media briefing on Wednesday last week.
According to Magwenya, the bill seeks to progress the transformation of South Africa's workforce by “setting equity targets for economic sectors and geographical regions, and requiring enterprises to develop transformation plans”, with new measures to also promote workplace diversity and equality.
“Among its key provisions,
the amendment bill empowers the Minister of Employment and Labour to set employment equity targets for economic sectors, as well as regions where transformation is lagging. The amendment bill also empowers the Minister of Employment and Labour to regulate compliance criteria to issue compliance certificates, as per Section 53 of the Employment Equity Act.
“The amended act allows the Minister of Employment and Labour to set regional targets, given that racial diversity in South Africa often has regional differences. The law requires employers with more than 50 employees to submit employment equity plans for their companies, spelling out how they will achieve these targets. Employers are then required to submit annual reports to the Department of Employment and Labour,” Magwenya said.
The new law now also
ANC builds house for destitute family
ensures that workers will be remunerated equally for the work they do.
“In the area of remuneration, the law requires employers to pay workers equal pay for equal work. The bill provides clear definitions of discrimination and sets out what workers can do when facing such discrimination, including lodging grievances with the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration, or the Labour Courts.
“Companies seeking to do business with the State will be required to submit a certificate from the department confirming that they are in compliance with the Employment Equity Act and its objectives, and that they do not pay their employees less than the national minimum wage.
"Labour inspectors will now also be compelled to inspect workplaces and issue compliance order to ensure that employers are complying with employment equity objectives,” Magwenya said.
The ANC's Million Meyiwa Branch in Ndwedwe Sub-Region, under the General Gizenga Mpanza Region, has embarked on its programme of giving back to the community by building a home for one of the most destitute families in the area.
This follows a door to door programme that was conducted before President Cyril Ramaphosa's visit to
the Region.
Speaking on behalf of the branch, Ms Nosihle Simelane who is also the Branch Secretary and the ANC PR Councillor in Ndwedwe Local Municipality, said that the idea of building a home for the Msomi family came after the ANC volunteers came across this family at Manqondo VD in Mathaba
area. This family of seven consists of the mother, four children and two grandchildren. Their home situation can be described as being in a broken-down or dilapidated state as they live in a small tumbledown shack that is covered in plastic since their roof sheeting is rotten and full of holes that cause flooding inside the house during heavy rainfall.
The only source of income for the hapless family is social grants to make ends meet. Branch Executive Committee (BEC) members, volunteers and other business people decided to come together and lend a helping hand towards building this family a decent home.
“We cannot fold our hands and wait for the government to do everything. We must also try to improvise and assist where we can. This is what we ought to be doing as the ANC hence large parts of our black community live in inadequate, overcrowded and informal settlements,” stated Simelane.
Although the house is not yet complete, it is now in its final stages and volunteers are there every day working tirelessly in ensuring that this family has a proper shelter.

Roland Schoeman lands SA Champs gold at 42
Veteran Roland Schoeman wrapped up his return to the championships with a first national title since 2015. The 42-year-old claimed the win in the 50m butterfly ahead of Clayton Jimmie and Ryan Coetzee, but his time of 23.83 fell short of the Aqualifying time for the World Championships. The top three in the race, did nevertheless achieve B
qualifying times.
Teen swimming sensation
Pieter Coetzé wrapped up the SA National Aquatic Championships in Gqeberha with another Olympic qualifying time on Sunday.
The 18-year-old, who has already recorded a qualifying time for Paris 2024 in the 100m backstroke, added the 200m backstroke time, cruising to victory in 1:56.66
also an A qualifier for the World Championships in Fukuoka, Japan later this year. Coetzé withdrew from the 50m butterfly final on Sunday to focus on the backstroke event and was duly rewarded with the fifth fastest time in the world this season in the 200m backstroke. After the medal presentation, Coetzé gifted his gold medal to the thrilled Deputy Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Nocawe Mafu, who attended the last night of the championships in Gqeberha.

qualifier in the 400m freestyle, Duné Coetzee claiming the title in 4:10.49.
Earlier in the day Emma Chelius swam a time trial with the goal of achieving the A qualifying time she just missed on her way to the 50m freestyle title on Saturday night. And it was mission accomplished as the Olympic semifinalist reached the wall in a speedy 24.78.

Also achieving an Aqualification time for the World Championships was Erin Gallagher. The 24-year-old added to her 100m butterfly victory by taking the 50m butterfly in a time of 26.31, ahead of Rebecca Meder (26.87) and 15year-old Jessica Thompson (26.91). There was also an A-
Meanwhile, Kat Swanepoel continued her sensational form in the events for swimmers with a disability. Despite breaking a finger during her warm-up, the Paralympic star broke the SA and African record in the SM4 150m individual medley, setting a new mark of 2:56.84. That also saw her dipping under the Aqualifying time for the Para Swimming World Championships in Manchester by a massive margin.
Other swimmers who achieved the required Aqualifying times were Christian Sadie in the SM7 200m individual medley (2:36.39), Alani Ferreira in the S13 400m freestyle (5:01.56) and Nathan Hendrik in the men's S13 400m freestyle (4:28.79).
KwaDukuza Athletic Club (KDAC) athlete, Roshan Bhowan, participated in the Two Oceans Marathon in Cape Town last Saturday, 15 April 2023.
Known globally as "the world's most beautiful marathon", the annual race is run against a backdrop of spectacular scenery through the Cape Peninsula. The race is run under the auspices of the IAAF, Athletics South Africa (ASA) and Western Province Athletics (WPA).
Roshan thoroughly enjoyed the race and performed exceptionally well, completing the 56km ultra marathon in a time of 5h55min.
Roshan remained cool and calm and ran the race nonstop from start to finish. He expressed that this past Saturday's race was his best Two Oceans Marathon experience yet. Roshan encourages all existing and potential club members to join in the event next year.
KDAC wishes to remind the community that membership is still open and there are still a few runners licenses available. Anyone wishing to join KDAC may contact the Club President, Yathin Narothum on 0837893476 or call personally at Lighty Barbers Salon.

Kaizer Chiefs to face Orlando Pirates in Nedbank
South African football fans got the news they were hoping for on Sunday as it was confirmed that Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates will meet in the semifinals of this season's Nedbank Cup.
The Premier Soccer League confirmed the draw for the last four just minutes after Chiefs had beaten Royal AM 2-1 in their quarter-final in Chatsworth, Durban. In the other semi-final, Stellenbosch will take on
Cup SF
Sekhukhune United. Dates and venues are yet to be confirmed. Chiefs, on the hunt for silverware with Mamelodi Sundowns having won the league title, had slipped to a 1-0 lead on Sunday but hit back in the 36th minute thanks to a Thabo Matlaba own goal.
With the scores locked at 1-1 after 90 minutes, the match headed into extra-time and looked to be going towards penalties before Yusuf Maart slotted a 102nd-minute penalty. Pirates, meanwhile, needed a penalty shootout to get past underdogs Dondol Stars in their quarter-final on Saturday while Stellenbosch landed the upset of the weekend by beating Sundowns 2-1 in their quarterfinal.
