NEW HORIZONS

We had been dreaming of it for several years and finally, by popular demand, decided to create and publish the English version of our magazine YACHTS France, which just celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2018. As the organizer of the World Yachts Trophies, the most famous awards ceremony that continues to develop and rewards the most innovative yachts in the world, it had become essential to be able to offer our winners an international audience. YACHTS Europe, English edition, brings its experience and notoriety in the world of yachting – recognized by the main representatives of this fast-moving industry – sharing the best from the boat shows of Cannes, Monaco, Fort Lauderdale, Düsseldorf and Miami. This magazine will be distributed at the main international airports, at digital kiosks and also send digitally to our 6,000 yachts owners who have been following us as we have grown over the years. In response to a market that increasingly affects a worldwide clientele that often cruises in the Mediterranean, YACHTS has decided to export itself – with YACHTS Europe – in order to bring its

critical expertise and vision to a clientele passionate about yachts. This inaugural issue is also an opportunity to introduce you to the main new yachts for 2019. Yachts’ editorial team was among a few selected and privileged guests invited to board of some prestigious new yachts – such as Oceanco’s Dar, the Heesen Irisha and Mangusta 54 GranSport. And so, Yachts invites you to come onboard these three wonders – winners of World Yachts Trophies – for which the level of technology, design, power and innovation is higher than ever. Always on the lookout for all the most beautiful or disruptive yachts in the world, YACHTS Europe is intended to stimulate your dreams and to discover new horizons that will help you to focus on how your next – or first – yacht can really improve your quality of life. Yachts Media will continue to deliver you the finest yachting experience worldwide. Thank you for your confidence in us. Stephane GUEDJ C.E.O

GREENLINE 45 FLY IPS OR HYBRID

OTAM

Greenline Yachts is expanding its fleet with a new 45-foot model. Its exterior design and naval architecture are by worldrenowned Slovenian design studio J & J Design. The interior is by Marco Casali Too Design, an Italian designer whose name has already appeared in major Italian brands such as Canados. The Greenline 45 Fly will be offered with two types of propulsion: One with H-Drive technology, a hybrid version with which it is possible to sail either with electric motors at up to 6 knots or at up to 25 knots under the thrust of two diesel engines of 2 x 370 hp. In the second version, the 45 Fly will be available with IPS 500 or 600 to achieve over 30 knots maximum speed. The particularity of this boat is to propose a large garage with a custom stowage for a seabob, easily accessible thanks to its hydraulic bathing platform and hatch, which rises up to sunpad level. As an option, the transom can be fitted with a basin, to prepare food and drinks, and a barbecue. Official launch is at the Düsseldorf boat show in January 2019.

85 GTS for 2019 Known for its fast sports boats, Otam has built a solid reputation over its 60 years of history for building high quality custom boats. Among the best examples embodying the brand are the Otam 58 Crazy Too, tender to the 50-metre Heesen Crazy Me, and the two Otam 80 HT Millennium Mr Brown and Mystère – both capable of exceeding 50 knots. For the creation of the 85 GTS, a futuristic concept with butterfly doors inspired by the design of supercars

emerged from initial design development. However, the client chose a more low-key profile. For this, he approached the French architect Joseph Dirand who cooperated with Otam on the interior design and for some styling details of the hull. The Otam 85 GTS is to be powered by a pair of MTU engines, each developing 2,600 horsepower, coupled to Arneson Drive surface transmissions to reach 45 knots at full throttle. Delivery is scheduled for June 2019.

A future classic is born

The original Targa 43 became an instant classic. A true Mediterranean icon oozing glamour and style. It had its imitators, but nothing could touch it. Until now. Alberto Mancini has taken the very soul of this Riviera inspired sports cruiser and combined it with inuences from his award-winning Targa 63 GTO. Sheer breathtaking beauty now presented in a smaller but perfectly formed package. His undeniable air creating an interior as sumptuous and as striking as its exterior. Everything the original set out to be. And a great deal more.

Power 80

The Franco-Polish builder plans to advance its range of motor catamarans with the launch of a new 80-foot project with a particularly elegant design. As can be seen from the first sketches made by its in-house studio, the manufacturer’s intention is to evolve in a high-end universe where luxury and refinement rub shoulders with spacious and comfortable facilities. To offer an even more generous living space, the entire forward area is fully decked to offer an outdoor lounging and dining space with sunpads. A door is integrated in the windscreen to make it possible to directly reach the saloon, which can be configured in various versions including an owners’ suite or a relaxation space. From here, it is possible to reach the

two hulls in which guest cabins can be laid out in different ways. The crew area, accessible from the cockpit, remains totally independent. The main helm station will be installed on the sundeck, well protected by a rigid bimini top. The other technical feat of this boat is located at between the two hulls aft in which it is planned to integrate an easily accessible garage, in which it will be possible to store a jet ski in addition to the tender. Different power options, from 575 horsepower to 2 x 1,200 horsepower, are proposed to satisfy lovers of long-distance or fast cruising. Entirely customizable, this new generation multihull could well persuade steadfast monohull enthusiasts towards the catamaran world.

TECNOMAR NEW SALE Tecnomar, brand of the Italian Sea Group is pleased to announce the signing of a new 37-metre yacht, belonging to the Evo series, which boasts a remarkably innovative line. Including four cabins, which can accommodate up to eight, this 120-foot all-aluminium yacht will transport its guests in an elegant and luxurious atmosphere. With its voluminous interior spaces and the very distinctive bow shape, this Tecnomar Evo 120 plays stands out from the crowd.

CCN

Sixth 102 Flyingsport Following the delivery of the 40-metre Kanga, Francesca, the sixth boat in CCN Flying Sport’s 102 series, which is intended for an American yachtsman, has just been launched. This 31-metre composite yacht harmoniously combines design and functionality. The metallic champagne colour gives the hull a certain elegance and strong personality. The same colour can be found in the interior, designed by Tommaso Spadolini who has perfectly reinterpreted the taste and wishes of a particularly design-conscious owner. The layout is classic with a spacious open plan galley located on the main deck. This area is extremely bright thanks to large glass surfaces that let in a lot of natural light. A panel above the dining table can be switched from transparent to opaque thanks to an electrically controlled liquid crystal film. The main deck furniture includes a comfortable custom-made sofa, while the general decoration alternates between sycamore and ebony, glass and satin metal. The different leathers on board have been worked to be braided, smooth or pleated and in different colour combinations. In the suite occupying the full beam of the lower deck, its sycamore bulkhead is broken up with brightly coloured fabric panels, designed by Pierre Frey. Great care has also been taken in the specification of the furniture, which is entirely made to measure with lightweight materials. On-board technology also includes an advanced home automation system that integrates with the systems of the twin MTU 16V2000 M96L engines that propel this sports boat up to 42 knots top speed.

IBUBBLE UNDERWATER DRONE Using patented underwater tracking technology, Ibubble follows and films you without you having to do anything. While you enjoy your underwater experience, this intelligent wireless drone, with integrated camera and light, captures the whole experience for you. Ibubble opens a new world of underwater film opportunities. With its remote control option, Ibubble is able to inspect everything going on beneath your boat completely autonomously. In order to give excellent shooting conditions and avoid you carrying extra lamps, Ibubble has two headlights with a power of 1000 lumens each. Weighing 9 kilos, Ibubble can submerge to a depth of 60 metres with autonomy of approximately one hour. In case of a problem, the device has an automatic resurface system. Ibubble, which is the fruit of a French start-up based in Grenoble, is available to pre-order at 3,099 euros including VAT. ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

SEAIR PERSONALIZATION TOWARDS LUXURY SEAir continues its development by partnering with Nathalie Ryan, a well-known interior designer, to offer a more luxurious customization of its flying semi-rigid aircraft. While the idea of foils is not new, its adaptation to boats has improved considerably thanks to the technology of new materials and the assembly of a retractable system that makes it possible to deliberately run aground on a beach or cruise in shallow waters. Nathalie Ryan is delighted to be able to embrace this new project and, through her agency Kirei Studio, brings her vision of tailor-made and luxury to offer a totally personalised boat.

MCY

10th anniversary Just ten years ago, the Beneteau Group decided to enter the world of luxury motoryachts by creating an Italian subsidiary called Monte Carlo Yachts. To succeed in this new challenge, the French manufacturer first of all approached very great talents like Carla Demaria, whose vision of large yachting is now proven, and designers like the duo Nuvolari and Lenard whose list of achievements include the likes of Alfa Nero and the Palmer Johnson O’Khalila. As far as interior fit-out was concerned, the Group did not skimp on resources and acquired a production site of more than 45,000 m2 located in Monfalcone near Venice. Once the boats are finished, they are launched with a 175-tonne travelift then some forty berths are at their disposal. You only need to follow a river for about one kilometre to reach the Adriatic Sea, which provides a superb test basin for the various new boats’ sea trials. MCY’s success is also the result of an experienced workforce of 400 employees and, above all, a manufacturing process that is quite unique in the world, which makes it possible to obtain a product with an excellent build quality

while efficiently reducing construction lead times. Each yacht is divided into three different modules (hull, interior and superstructure) that are assembled completely independently. When the hull is finished and the engines are installed, the interior fittings are delicately integrated on an aluminium frame placed on Kevlar reinforcement. The aim is always to reduce weight and possible vibrations. Particular attention is also paid to all the partitions, which receive a very high-density layer in order to soundproof the guests from engine room noise. For the third stage, the superstructure – the upper part of which is reinforce by carbon fibre – is fixed to the hull using an aeronautical-grade glue so that the assembly forms a very resistant and ultra rigid compact unit. Final phase, the yacht enters a painting booth of about 1000 m2 to be coated in whatever colour is chosen by the new owner. With a range that extends from 65 to 116 feet and includes seven models, Beneteau can now be considered a very large builder of refined and luxurious yachts that harmoniously combine French technology and Italian craftsmanship.

CANTIERE DELLE MARCHE Nauta Air 110: Mimì la sardine

Since the launch of its Nauta Air range, Cantiere delle Marche has launched and delivered four yachts in the series. Today, Cantiere delle Marche is proud to announce the launch of the fifth Nauta Air, Mimì la Sardine, a 110-foot boat that bears the signature of Mario Pedol and Massimo Gino from Nauta Yachts on both its exterior and interior design. This yacht, a pure exploration vessel, combines the traditional elegance of Nauta Yachts with the undisputed technical expertise of the Italian manufacturer. The interior style has been designed to offer owners, their families and guests a relaxing atmosphere in communal and private spaces.

Space and relaxation are the key words of this family yacht. Oak, natural and patinated, is generously used on all decks to create warm and comfortable environments. The furniture, sofas, coffee tables and lamps are from renowned Italian manufacturers such as Baxter, Flexform, B&B Italia, Flos, Gervasoni and most of the furnishing fabrics have been specified from among Loro Piana's finest. Thanks to its 48,000-litre tanks and two CAT18 Acert 533 kW engines, Mimì la Sardine has an impressive range of 5,500 nautical miles at 9 knots – more than enough to discover the world in a yacht with a very French name.

LYNX YACHTS ADVENTURE RANGE The Dutch manufacturer Lynx Yachts, already known for the construction of its toy transporters, is launching the design of a new series with a model called Adventure 29. This rugged yacht is designed to go anywhere and in any weather. Inspired by the iconic style of the YXT series, the Adventure 29 has a unique profile design created by Bernd Weel Design. Following the brief received from the management, the architect increased the beam of the boat to 8.2 metres – a quite unique size for a 29-metre yacht that allows a shallow draught while maintaining fuel consumption at acceptable levels. The exterior of the Adventure 29 offers enough space to relax, eat, soak in the Jacuzzi or simply sit and enjoy the view. Another original feature of this boat is located at the stern where a gigantic platform of 30 m2 allows it to transport a large 6.50 m tender and several toys. For the layout, the beam of the Adventure 29 creates new opportunities rarely seen on a yacht of similar length. On the lower deck, the owners’ cabin extends over 29 m2. Four other spacious guest cabins and four crew cabins make this yacht suitable for charter use. 24

SILENT YACHTS The “almost” autonomous catamaran

With this new catamaran, Silent Yachts offers a particularly interesting alternative to traditional propulsion. With its fly’ entirely covered with photovoltaic panels, the Silent 55 recharges its battery pack, from the sunlight, to drive two electric motors with a power of 2 x 30 kw and cruise peacefully and quietly at a maximum speed of 7 knots. When the sun is not shining, during night passages for example, the catamaran still has a generator. For sailors who want a slightly faster boat, the Silent 55 is also available in a hybrid version with two diesel engines of up to 2 x 300 horsepower to give a top speed of over 20 knots. An interesting feature of this catamaran is its excellent stability at anchor with a remarkable quality of living at main deck level. Well equipped, the owners’ suite occupies the forward part of the boat between the two hulls, which in turn can accommodate up to four more guest cabins. At a time when it is essential to think about protecting the environment and consuming less, the Silent 55 seems to be a good choice for those who are eco-conscious but not attracted to the idea of hoisting or unfurling sails.

BENETEAU BOAT CLUB 32 BASES IN EUROPE Beneteau Boat Club is a new concept that allows you to sail without necessarily owning a boat with the annual running costs ownership involves. All you have to do is join Beneteau Boat Club by paying an annual subscription, the amount of which depends on the type of boat you wish to use. The base’s boats then become accessible all year round with unlimited access. They are maintained and insured by the boat club: only the fuel tank needs to be refilled before the boat is returned. To ensure safe navigation and facilitate port manoeuvres, the club accompanies its members in the handling of the boat, offering at least two hours of personalized training during the first outing. More economical to use than conventional charter, this offer, inspired by new modes of shared use “on demand”, nevertheless requires a boat licence. Club membership provides access to a dedicated application on which it is possible to check the availability of the boats, book them and subsequently check out once the boat has been returned. Among Beneteau Boat Club’s 32 bases, six are located on the Atlantic coast, seven in the Mediterranean, two in Corsica, two in the Balearics and four in Spain. On the price side, membership of the Sables d’Olonne club, for example, costs 4,500 euros and a further 690 euros per month – to use an Antares 9 (as compared to 73,332 euros inc. VAT to purchase new). ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

TULIP STABILIZER FOR CHAMPAGNE

VSY

Waterecho The energy crisis and global warming we face every day around the world are raising awareness in the international community. As a result, global industry is increasingly committed to providing alternatives and innovative systems to provide practical and effective solutions. Yachting is no exception and VSY is one clear example of a company in a continuous quest to offer excellence, comfort and best performance, hand in hand with the desire to create luxury yachts that also respect the environment. Owners are increasingly interested in clean technologies and fuel-efficient boats. To respond to this trend, VSY has just signed a partnership agreement with Siemens and Lloyd’s Register to develop hydrogen fuel cell technology on a special version of the brand new VSY 65 m Waterecho project developed by Espen Oeino. As part of this partnership, VSY is committed to achieving the technical feasibility of using hydrogen fuel cells and installing them on board. While Siemens undertakes to provide its know-how on the technical solutions to be developed, Lloyd’s Register is committed to carry out a preliminary assessment for certification purposes.

After working for 20 years as a captain, Germain Mari Olive, from Nice, has developed a new champagne bucket with its flutes that no longer leave stewards or stewardesses in fear of the boat’s heeling or pitching movements causing a spill. Each support is equipped with a highly technological and innovative system that stays upright, even at an angle of up to 30°. Internationally patented, this device can be customized with a wide range of finishes including carbon fibre, white gold or pink gold. It can also be lacquered to match the yacht or private jet colours.

CIGARETTE 515 Limited Edition

The American manufacturer Cigarette completes its portfolio with the 515, significantly larger and more spacious than the 50 Marauder and also developed in collaboration with the German customising company AMG. It is now capable of transporting six people in the ultimate refinement with alcantara bucket seats. Its cockpit features a single 24-inch Garmin display that combines all mechanical and navigation information. The co-pilot, well protected by the windshield, is able to monitor the various parameters behind an identical screen. To save weight and gain stiffness, the entire

deck is made only of carbon fibre, as are certain parts of the hull structure, designed to withstand very high impacts. Mechanically, the 515 sports 2 x 1515 horsepower V8 Mercruiser Racing blocks equipped with two turbo compressors. They are mounted one behind the other to ensure a central centre of thrust as close as possible to the rear V of the hull. The two steps designed into the hull improve the boat’s planing by creating ventilation. This should easily exceed 200 kilometres/hour on the water – hard to beat for a production boat.

RIO 68 SPORTYACHTS Upscaling

With this new project designed by Marino Alfani, Rio Yachts will make its entry into the world of sportyachts over 20 metres. Very aggressive but equally elegant, this boat represents a fly’ just a little bit longer than most of its competitors, which can be protected by a soft top. As current trends demand, the entire front part of the boat is fitted out with a very large lounging area accompanied by a huge sunpad. The architecture of the dining area, situated in the cockpit above the

DYNAMIQ First GTT 135 sold

After the launch of the first Dynamiq “Jetsetter” in 2017 and the GTT 115 hybrid in 2018, the Monaco-based, Russian-backed, Italian-facility brand has recently received an order for its first 41-metre superyacht. Featuring an aggressive exterior style that defines the brand, this all-new model will be built in aluminium and carbon fibre based on a fast displacement hull form by Van Oossanen Naval Architects of the Netherlands. In the interest of hydrodynamic excellence, particular attention has been paid to weight distribution to lower the centre of gravity to the lowest level. A specific hull appendage is claimed to reduce pitch by

20%. These technical characteristics will allow the GTT 135 to go at more than 20 knots at maximum speed or achieve a transatlantic range of more than 3,000 miles at 12 knots. Like all models in the Dynamiq range, the GTT 135 boasts a huge 120 m2 sundeck with a Jacuzzi that offers an exceptional view forward. The living area can accommodate 10 people in five spacious cabins, with the owners’ suite occupying the full beam of the main deck. Russian yacht broker Konstantin Kolpakov, of Arcon Yachts, introduced the experienced European buyer. Delivery of the new GTT 135 is scheduled for the summer of 2020.

AVON ELECTRIC TENDER After launching the world’s first Jet tender in 1991 – with its Avon brand owned for more than 20 years – Zodiac Nautic continues to innovate. In collaboration with the world leader in marine electric propulsion, Torqeedo, based in Germany, Avon has developed the eJET 450, a 100% electric tender that solves the problems that yacht owners usually face: fuel transport, oil change and costly maintenance. To do this, it is equipped with the 55 kW Deep Blue electric motor, Torqeedo’s most advanced, connected to the latest generation of automotive battery (30.5 kWh used on the BMW i3). The eJET has a battery life of 90 minutes at 23 knots and 7 hours at 5 knots. It can reach a maximum speed of 31 knots thanks to its revolutionary Hydrojet technology. eJET tenders also have connected capabilities that allow them to be maintained and upgraded directly via the Internet. True to their luxurious character, Avon eJETs semi-rigid models are made of Hypalon – a kind of synthetic rubber – and sport an electrically adjustable seat. The range is fully customizable with many options available. //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// 36

IGUANA X 100

Since the launch of the first Iguana Yacht back in 2008, there has been strong demand for a less luxurious amphibious boat, with a functional and robust system, that better meets the needs of beachfront villa owners. For these clients, the Iguana Yacht was simply too up-market – they needed a RIB-style boat capable of tackling any terrain. Hence the birth of Iguana X – a solid and practical boat with a longer range that can move on sand, wet mud or rougher terrain. The motorized X 100 with a maximum power of 600 horsepower is capable of reaching up to 47 knots in the water and is available with four different specifications.

The console can accommodate a WC and the boat has a capacity of two tonnes. With its tank-tracks deployed, the Iguana can climb inclines of up to 45%. Its starting price is approximately 220,000 euros.

LA CIOTAT SHIPYARDS PLATFORM FOR MEGAYACHTS La Ciotat Shipyards has officially granted MB92 La Ciotat an exclusive right to use more than 23,000 m2 for a period of 35 years on a new megayacht platform that will be equipped with a travelift capable of lifting yachts displacing up to 4000 tonnes. The platform will be dedicated to the refit of yachts of up to 105 metres LOA. This decision marks the end of a one-year competitive bidding process, during which all aspects of the project (technical, financial and operational) were carefully evaluated. This development is perfectly in line with the economic model of the La Ciotat Shipyards, which will carry out the work and then retain control of the site’s operation. MB92 La Ciotat’s financial bid, supported by its shareholders and its extensive knowledge of the megayacht refit market, will provide La Ciotat with stateof-the-art equipment capable of accommodating up to eight megayachts simultaneously. The final contract signing with MB92 La Ciotat is imminent. The commissioning of the 4000-tonne travelift is scheduled for the 4th quarter of 2021. //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// 42

AZIMUT S 10 Alberto Mancini Creation

The Azimut S10, the flagship of the S Collection, is the result of a new collaboration with designer Alberto Mancini, working for the first time with the Avigliana shipyard. The S10 is a sports yacht of impeccable class that skilfully combines the elegance of a sport-yacht, the architecture of a modern villa on the sea and, above all, the personality of a sports car, within its 28 metres. These three very original elements cohabit perfectly. Mancini, who has made his name recently through creations such as the Mangusta Oceano 43 at Overmarine and the Targa 63 at Fairline, has reworked all the latest ‘must-haves’ on this model, such as a very large deck ‘lounge’ on the foredeck overlooked by two gigantic sunpads. To make it even more original, access to the flybridge is via an open carbon staircase, with

cantilevered steps, rising from the centre of the aft deck. This new layout allows the outdoor living area to be divided into two parts, with one zone reserved for sunbathing and the other for eating. As another originality, the designer has replaced the traditional stainless steel exterior handrails with carbon to emphasize that this yacht is seriously high-tech. The interior decoration is entrusted, as ever, to Francesco Guida, whose talent is already renowned and proven from previous models. Transparency and clarity remain top priorities with lateral openings in the saloon to make the most of the sea and fresh air. On the mechanical side, minimal information is published, but the boat should incorporate a multi-pod propulsion system, combined with high power ratings, developed by the Swedish engine manufacturer Volvo Penta.

AZIMUT GRANDE MAGELLANO 25 RPH configuration

The Magellano range is expanding with a new 25-metre model that features a Raised Pilot House (RPH) configuration with a generous flybridge directly accessible from the wheelhouse. The exterior design is softened with quite rounded lines bearing Ken Freivokh’s hallmarks. This yacht, whose ‘raison d’etre’ is to be capable of cruising long-distance to remote areas in safety, is equipped with a multitude of windows to allow natural light into the four cabins located in the hull. The owner’s suite – in larger yacht style – enjoys a privileged position occupying the entire forward part of the main deck. A private foredeck lounging space allows owners to enjoy peaceful cruising, thanks to the comfortable semi-displacement hull. The interior decoration is the work of the designer Vincenzo De Cotiis, who was until recently better known for his various achievements in the world of shore-based re-

sidential design. His influence aims to completely update the style of the traditional Magellano by taking inspiration from contemporary loft design. As a first, fibreglass is ennobled and assumes a non-structural but purely decorative function: worked up, it expresses its raw soul in contrast to much more precious materials, as De Cotiis has already done for his refined works ashore, that are considered something in between art and design. The architectural firm has worked hard on the depth of the spaces, creating environments without excessive separations, to allow continuous visual contact with the sea. Much attention has been paid to creating a sense of continuity. In the living room, the positioning of the dining table is longitudinal and its irregular shape evokes a shoreline. Shapes are irregular all around with furniture and sofas designed to create different reliefs.

BENETTI 68 M BNOW The family is growing

BNow is a new range of displacement yachts with exteriors and layouts designed by RWD (Redman Whiteley Dixon). Interiors are ‘smart casual’ and contemporary. The BNow concept consists of four different models, ranging from 50 metres to 55, 63 and 68 metres. BNow yachts can be identified by their strong personality. The living space has been developed with a perfect continuity of interior and exterior spaces. Thanks to Benetti’s efficient construction technology, the delivery time of BNow models can be quite short. New techniques, developed by Benetti over the years, make it possible to accelerate the engineering process. According to Giovanni Bizzarri, R&D Director

of Azimut Benetti Group: “Thanks to computer simulation, we have managed to avoid the process of tank testing, which can easily take up to six months. This new technology gives us the opportunity to optimize the process and we can now predict everything from the behaviour of the stabilizers to the influence of the propeller shafts. We have immediate data on seakeeping and even on how the exhaust gas flow will interact on the hull”. The two 63 and 68 metre models are characterised by a large overflow pool at the stern and an owners’ suite that opens directly onto the spacious ‘outdoor saloon’ nicely recessed into the foredeck and protected from the wind.

MANGUSTA 45 GRANSPORT A semi-closed fly’

Following the success of the Mangusta 54 Gransport, whose second unit is already under construction, the Italian shipyard Overmarine is strengthening this new series with the launch of a 45-metre boat with a significantly different style. Compared to its big brother, this yacht is distinguished by the presence of a semi-closed fly’ comprising a lounge and the main wheelhouse. From here it will also be possible to descend directly to the foredeck with its superb overflow pool surrounded by magnificent sunpads. The owners’ suite, just below, opens up to the outside world thanks to its retractable terrace. Tenders and various toys will be stored in the forward

structure of the boat, which acts as a garage. The advantage of this location is to completely clear the stern so that the latter is entirely dedicated to the beach club. Two lateral extensions are planned to make the most of the sea and various leisure activities on offer. The hull, with a bulbous bow, has been specially designed to push through the sea at up to 26 knots at maximum speed, thanks to the thrust of three MTU engines each producing 2,600 horsepower. Benefiting from excellent performance, this yacht can also cruise at 10 knots to considerably reduce fuel consumption and thus obtain transatlantic autonomy.

PERINI HERITAGE Respected DNA

The partnership between the Roman company and the Perini yard, a universal icon of Italian shipbuilding, continues with the choice of Zuccon International Project to design the new Héritage range, currently comprising three models of 55, 65 and 75 metres. The history and tradition of sailing, both in terms of architectural language and lifestyle on board, are the main sources of inspiration that have guided the development and definition of this new design experience. The plans of the first three Heritage models

feature hulls of all shapes and sizes with harmonious interconnection between the various decks. The desire to connect with nature has a clear impact on the design of the interiors, in which bamboo plants and swimming pools with waterfalls will be features. In the Heritage range, the emphasis has been placed on the exterior with a priority on the relationship between the sea and nature but without sacrificing the functionality that makes a motor yacht competitive in its market segment.

PRINCESS X95 New definition of spaces

Princess Yachts boldly reinterprets the rules of yacht design. The X95 elegantly combines architectural innovation with all of Princess Yachts’ well-known features, including quality craftsmanship, interior design and technological innovation. The all-new Princess X95 is designed like no other yacht before. While the recently announced Y85 sets a new standard in classic motor yacht design and the revolutionary R35 challenges the perceived limits of performance, comfort and handling of a day cruiser, the X95 redefines the practical potential and on-board life options by completely rethinking the boat’s architecture. In collaboration with Olesinski and Pininfarina, Princess has created a new design that optimizes outdoor living surfaces without compromising the boat’s overall habitability. With this new configuration, the X95 has only one wheelhouse installed in the forward part of the flybridge in order to make maximum use of the main deck, which includes the lounge, galley and owners’ suite. To feel even closer to the sea, the boat’s amount of glazing is increased both in the superstructure and in the hull. Another significant advantage is that the very dominant foredeck is equipped with a superb outdoor lounging zone facing a Jacuzzi forward. The brand’s hydrodynamic capabilities remain unchanged with an improved stability of some 15%. With twin MANs of 1,900 horsepower, the X95 is expected to reach 26 knots at full throttle.

HEESEN COSMIC A star is born

Latest challenge for the Dutch shipyard Heesen: to succeed in building an 80-metre megayacht capable of sailing at a maximum speed of 29 knots. New technical solutions have been developed by the manufacturer to ensure that the megayacht maintains its stiffness at full speed. As the world leader in the design and build of aluminium yachts, Heesen has filed an exclusive patent with a construction method based on a central beam. To achieve its performance, Cosmic will be driven by four MTUs totalling 19,000 horsepower coupled to variable-pitch propellers. A project of this magnitude naturally requires tight design team collaboration. In this case the famous British studio Winch Design was selected for the realization of the exteriors and Sinot for the interiors, the same studio used for Heesen’s Galactica Super Nova. Winch Design has created sleek and contemporary exterior lines to optimize life on

board, while retaining the styling elements of Heesen’s DNA. Among the main features, its fly’ extends over 270 m2, the foredeck serves both as a helipad and as an impressive forward-facing outdoor cinema; its swimming pool measures seven metres and it has a glass bottom with a waterfall that descends from the upper deck. Its beach club is gigantic and opens to the sides thanks to terraces that stretch out over the sea. The award-winning Dutch studio, Sinot, has created an interior inspired by elements of nature. Glass, natural light and optimized ceiling heights create a perfectly balanced aesthetic. The yacht will accommodate 12 in four guest suites on the lower deck, a VIP with private studio adjacent on the upper deck and in the owners’ suite, which occupies the forward part of the main deck. A crew of 19, in 11 cabins, will be able to discreetly serve guests.

BAGLIETTO 43 M EXPLORER 150 m2 helipad

This new project was designed by the Milanese studio Santa Maria Magnolfi. Very suitable for sailing in all regions of the world, the 43-metre explorer gives priority to external views as demonstrated by myriad glass surfaces. Once deployed, the fold-out helipad covers an area of more than 140 m2. When not in use, this can easily be transformed into an ‘under the stars’ dining area, a dance floor

or a gigantic sunbathing zone. The space below is a beach club with a very spacious volume to accommodate a multitude of tenders and other toys in the adjacent garage. The owners’ suite occupies the entire upper part of the boat with a terrace and a sundeck with completely private access. Everything has been studied on board to respect the privacy of passengers.

NOBISKRUG ARTEFACT Art and technology

Artefact’s distinctive exterior and interior design, by Gregory Marshall Studio and Reymond Langton Design respectively, reflect the personality of the owner whose desire is to respect the environment as much as possible with the use of numerous technological innovations. For example, the search for quiet operation and maximum stability was a high priority in developing the concept of the boat.

Artefact is the first hybrid superyacht to have a DC bus, batteries and an ABB Pod, variable speed diesel electric propulsion system. With its advanced dynamic positioning system (DPS), this hybrid superyacht can maintain both its position and its direction to increase passenger comfort. The seabed of course benefits by using the DPS rather than dragging an anchor and chain over coral heads.

SUNSEEKER

49 m in partnership with Icon Yachts Sunseeker International intends to enter the world of aluminium yachts to meet the demand of its customers for even larger boats. This development will be carried out with the help of the renowned Dutch refit and build specialist, ICON Yachts, to produce a new 49-metre yacht, the first of which will be launched in 2021. This superyacht will be built on the basis of a proven displacement hull, but the naval architecture and engineering will be the responsibility of Sunseeker. Sunsee-

ker’s first experience in the superyacht market took place in 2001 with the introduction of the now iconic 105 Yacht. Since then, Britain’s largest boat builder has experienced unprecedented growth in the sector, having built 125 yachts of over 100 feet in length. The new 49m, triple-decker is inspired by Sunseeker’s iconic angular, exterior lines and offers exceptional space and volume, with an interior that can be adapted to each owner’s unique taste with the brand’s “tailor-made” service.

PRINCESS R 35 New range

The excellent performance achieved by the racing yachts during the last Vendée Globe has proven state-of-art foil technology works in practice. After the Foiler designed by Enata, then the Seaair developed by Zodiac, now the British shipyard Princess proposes a new range of high performance day boats whose USPs include being equipped with two independently-adjustable foils – automatically adjusted by the onboard computer – that adjust the heel angle and attitude of the boat without lifting it clear of the water. For the

development of this very advanced technology appendage – the AFS (Princess Active Foil System) – the manufacturer approached the world famous BAR Technologies (Ben Ainslie Racing). Sea trials suggest the result is much lower drag and a more comfortable and stable ride, particularly in a chop, with high-speed cornering ability. The ‘sculpted’ lightweight monocoque hull structure was designed with legendary Italian styling house Pininfarina – a name synonymous with many of the world’s most beautiful and valuable cars.

Equipped with twin engines, installed in direct shaft line, the Swift 47 retains its temperament as a great voyager, being economical and enduring.

Two completely modernised boats are being marketed in Europe. Considered as easy to use and versatile open walkarounds, these two units offer a modern design that was realized in collaboration with the Zuccon International studio. Very nautical looking with a strong sheerline, they both offer propulsion by Volvo Penta pods which allows more internal volume to optimize their liveable zones. Built on a design similar to its big sister, the 42-footer offers a large open-plan interior accessed from the cockpit in which a double and two single berths share a shower room. The

For those who don’t necessarily need a huge fly’, Galeon offers an alternative model called “Skydeck” based on the 640 fly’. If the hull is almost identical, the superstructures are totally different, but nevertheless easily recognisable as Galeons! A fourth cabin, aft of the engine room, could be used to accommodate children or crew, with direct access from deck. The relatively flat deck layout facilitates people flow and offers very good protection thanks to the high bulwarks. Both the BG62 and 42 are equipped with a rigid bimini top, accessible via a ladder for sunbathing when at rest. Well built, these boats offer an attractive package for those looking for a modest, safe and comfortable, family cruiser.

CCN 27 M FREEDOM Original design

Freedom is an entirely custom yacht made by the Italian shipyard Cerri for the famous designer Roberto Cavali. The exterior design and interior decoration were done in collaboration with the award-winning designer Tommaso Spadolini who is a close friend of the owner. Freedom is a fast aluminium yacht, capable of reaching a maximum speed of 40 knots thanks to three engines driving water jets. The exterior profile and interior layout reflect the strong personality of the owner, who required a boat that felt very close to, and at one with,

the sea, while maintaining privacy. The master cabin, aft of the wheelhouse, extends across the main deck. A central skylight is provided to enhance natural light. At the stern, the large cockpit is equipped with two picture windows, beneath the sweeping superstructure arches, that allow one to fully enjoy the sea in complete privacy. The lower deck comprises two guest cabins and comfortable crew quarters. The fly includes a private area with a huge sunpad. The tender garage occupies a front part of the hull, keeping the aft deck uncluttered.

AMER 94 TWIN Laboratory of ideas

The Italian shipyard – which was one of the first to experiment with a quadruple propulsion system on a 30-metre yacht – is emphasising its drive to innovate by unveiling a very ecologically oriented yacht this year. With the Amer 94 Twin, the manufacturer has swapped the usual triple-pod engine for dual IPS 1350 propulsion, saving a few litres per hour of fuel consumption, according to the latest measurements made by RINA, the 94 would only consume 210 liters at 19 knots. In the same spirit, this yacht will be protected from barnacle growth by an antifouling adhesive film. A synthetic coating will replace

teak and what is claimed to be a ‘very advanced material’, from the aeronautical industry, will provide insulation. Everything has been designed to reduce the overall weight of the boat with a 3D manufacturing process using carbon fibre reinforcement. A very light wooden cabin sole was also specified. On the electrical front, the boat will be equipped with lithium batteries charged by automatically adjusting variable speed generators. With this boat, which might be described as being a wolf in sheep’s clothing, the manufacturer intends to quickly penetrate the hybrid world.

DELFINO 95 Successful development

Compared to the previous model, the 95 has a much more modern look with an exterior deck layout completely redesigned to take advantage of a huge lounge area on the foredeck with two big sunpads and a bench seat. The fly was also completely reorganized to incorporate a helmstation. The glazed areas are also slightly increased so that the owners can enjoy an even better view. One of the main selling points

of the Delfino is to offer exceptional ‘habitability’ with an owners’ suite that extends over 20 m2. The boat’s garage is large enough to carry a 4.40-metre tender. Equipped with two MANs, with a total power of 2,000 horsepower, the Delfino runs at a maximum speed of around 14.5 knots. By reducing its speed to 10 knots, this yacht will be able to cross the Atlantic with a range of 2,500 miles.

Its two Caterpillars, each developing just under 2,000 horsepower, are more than enough to propel the hull at nearly 17 knots top speed and give it a range of

some 3,500 miles at 10 knots. The owners’ suite occupies the entire forward part of the main deck to enjoy perfect privacy. The other four guest cabins are distributed throughout the hull. The garage is placed in the stern of the boat and the tender is launched from one side after lifting a hull hatch. A second unit is currently under construction for delivery in 2020.

Benetti FB269 was designed for one of the brand’s most loyal customers, Italian-American John Staluppi who is already on his third Benetti. Passionate about the James Bond brand, the owner has always named his boats after the names of the films. Spectre combines all of Benetti’s advanced design and construction techniques. Among its innovations, it is also the first yacht equipped with Ride Control technology, which makes it possible to obtain an unprecedented stability underway for a boat of this type. The hull lines have been worked up by the Dutch company Mulder Design to obtain the

best possible performance with a range of 6,500 miles at 12 knots. Maximum speed is around 21 knots, about 30% more than a traditional displacement hull would offer. The yacht has five decks and its layout is designed to offer absolute comfort for 12 people. The living area unusually includes two owners’ cabins, two VIP cabins on the main deck and two more guest cabins on the lower deck. The exterior profile is by Giorgio Maria Cassetta, while the interior decoration is the result of close collaboration between the owner and the yard’s in-house studio.

WATERDREAM CALIFORNIA 65 Party Boat

A new boat entirely dedicated to outdoor leisure, the Waterdream California 65 is distinguished by a modern look designed by the talented Dutch designer Frank Mulder. The cockpit layout with its central passage, its two sunpads with reclining back supports, its central steering position, its mini galley and its two tables embedded in the floor is a model of user-friendliness. The whole shebang can be perfectly sheltered from the sun with the help of an electrically folding bimini that can be discreetly folded away into its storage space like a cabriolet car. To reach the raised foredeck of the otherwise flatdecked boat, the manufacturer has provided a central opening in the windscreen with steps up to it. Two additional cushions equipped with a fixing system with very powerful magnets will cover a large part of this surface forward of the helm. The anchor, hidden in its integrated stowage in the bow, can be deployed with an electric control without the need to go forward. Entirely built of aluminium, this boat displaces under thirty tonnes and reaches 40 knots maximum speed – poered by two Volvo Penta 1 350 IPS pods that fit perfectly into the design of this slick hull. Another feature is an “extendible” bathing platform that can be deployed from the transom structure. The entire aft part of the boat lifts up, with hydraulic cylinders, to reveal a garage capable of holding a mini jet tender. Tender launching is carried out after slotting in a portable lightweight carbon crane. The interior can be completely customized according to the owners’ wishes and can accommodate two or three cabins. In this new configuration, the forward part of the flybridge is equipped with a large skylight to illuminate the interior of the saloon. With its pod propulsion mode, the Navetta 48 succeeds in offering four double cabins, one of which is totally self-contained and accessible via the swimming platform. Like most Navetta boats, the 48 offers an excellent compromise between generous exterior surfaces, particularly on the flybridge, and a perfectly equipped interior living space. The main galley of the boat is still located in the descent that leads to the accommodation – which doesn’t feel quite right to those of us based on the Côte d’Azur. The decoration has evolved significantly to be more contemporary but is still far from the luxury and refinement found in comparable Italian stars. CONRAD VIATORIS The largest yacht built in Poland

After a two-year construction period, the Conrad C133, named Viatoris, is not only the largest yacht built to date by Conrad Shipyard, but also the largest luxury motor yacht ever built in Poland. Reymond Langton Design was commissioned by Conrad Shipyard to create this 40-metre yacht for an experienced sailor and loyal customer of the yard. Built to exacting standards, it is distinguished by a layout comparable

to a much larger yacht with a particularly neat finish. Naval architecture, worked up by Diana Yacht Design, allows her to achieve autonomy for approximately 4,000 miles at 10.5 knots with a very reasonable power of only 2 x 680 horsepower. Another strength of this project is the inhouse manufacturing of practically all the elements that make up the internal installations – so as to be particularly competitive in terms of price.

THE WINNERS The 2018 edition of the World Yachts Trophies once again kept all its promises. On the occasion of the magazine’s 30th anniversary, and with some very close results, 30 yachts won what are probably the most envied trophies in the yachting industry. Text: Franck VAN ESPEN Photos: Peter Seyfferth

These coveted awards, whose winners have been decided on after a very rigorous selection by our judges, are constantly evolving. In order to be more in tune with the growing market, the magazine’s management committee decided to create several new categories. The competition is now open to yachts of over 45 feet and semi-custom yachts are now admitted for nomination too. After the presentation of the 32 trophies, 22 yachts then continued the

show by parading past the Carlton Beach. According to the majority of the world’s leading manufacturers, who honoured us with their participation in this event, the prestige of the 2018 WYTs has increased again this year. The annual event – which has become a must for the entire yachting profession and owners alike – consolidates its leading position rewarding the best designed, most beautiful yachts from 45 feet right up to the largest superyachts.

With particularlyly mild weather this year, 22 yachts were able to display their most beautiful assets, attracting more than 10,000 spectators gathered along La Croisette. We would particularly like to thank the port authorities of the city of Cannes for their exemplary work in making this ‘nautical fashion parade’ as dazzling as ever.

FAIRLINE 43 OPEN - LENGTH : 13.90 M In the tradition of the superb 63 GTO, developed in collaboration with Italian designer Alberto Mancini, the UK-based manufacturer is reinterpreting its Targa range with a new 43-foot boat that is equally aesthetically pleasing. Fluid, sleek and sporty, this Targa, with its seaworthy hull, is available in two lifestyle versions with a saloon and two independent cabins. The difference lies in the location of the owners’ cabin. The chic decoration lends itself towards refined luxury, which one would normally expect to find on larger boats. One distinctive feature: the cockpit of the Targa 43 is extremely spacious and feels long thanks to its big hard top sporting a large opening.

PRINCESS 55 FLY - LENGTH: 17.24 M

YACHTS FROM 45’ to 62’ (13.70 to 18.50 M)

Layout Trophy

Aboard this new Princess 55 fly, elegance is evident everywhere especially with its successful design for the windows that let naturally light flood the owner’s suite. Fitted with three double cabins plus a fourth at the stern, accessible from the bathing platform, the 55 fly remains faithful to the particularly efficient shaft drive configuration and the yard announces a top speed of nearly 33 knots with a total of 1,600 horsepower from its twin engines. With renowned seaworthiness, the 55 is also a winner on the luxury scale with a refined decoration that benefits from a natural clarity. As current trends demand, the 55 fly offers conviviality with a lounging area and sunpad located on the foredeck.

YACHTS FROM 45’ to 62’ (13.70 to 18.50 M)

Innovation Trophy

Francesco Guida, who signed his second project with Azimut, decorated the interiors with a contemporary style that stands out for its freshness and refinement. The decoration highlights two different wood species, light oak and dark oak, with structures displaying original patterns emphasised by inserts of polished steel. The result is a relaxing atmosphere enhanced by warm colours. The lighting plays an essential role with the use of many indirect sources that show off the superb furniture. The owners’ cabin, which occupies the midships of the boat, enjoys a spectacular view thanks to the presence of six windows.

AZIMUT 55 FLY - LENGTH: 16.70 M

YACHTS FROM 45’ to 62’ (13.70 to 18.50 M)

Interior design Trophy

The Azimut 55 continues its reinvention strategy developed by the Italian manufacturer. On the external design side, the bow becomes more prominent thanks to its widened form, which increases the usable area of the foredeck. The glass surfaces are even larger, as is the flybridge that extends over the cockpit. The front sunpad also gains in user-friendliness and comfort thanks to the new shape of its inclined backrests. The most radical change is in the interior layout with a galley that opens onto the outdoor living space. Achille Salvagni’s decoration is now more luxurious, with soft, rounded furniture that fits perfectly into this nautical environment.

RIVA RIBELLE 66 - LENGTH: 20.20 M The launch of the new Riva Ribelle proves once again that this marque is distinguished by its extraordinary natural elegance and unique hull colour. Defined as a sportfly, the Ribelle 66 features a large forward sunpad of a wonderful circular form. This boat is the result of a close collaboration between Officina Italiana design and Ferretti Group’s in-house engineering studio. It is difficult to resist the charm of the soft and rounded form of the stern into which all the equipment seems to be perfectly integrated.

FERRETTI 670 - LENGTH: 20.25 M

YACHTS FROM 62’ to 80’ (18.50 to 24 M)

Layout Trophy

The Ferretti 670 is the worthy heir to the 65-footer, which was a great commercial success. As part of an evolutionary process, it combines some of the features of the models launched in 2016 and 2017 (Ferretti Yachts 450, 780, 850 and 920) with new features perfectly designed to improve life on board. Above the new bathing platform, two storage spaces have been specially fitted out to accommodate a seabob and other accessories for leisure activities. The foredeck has been completely redesigned to become a real outdoor lounge with sunpads and tables for al fresco lunches. One strong point is that the manufacturer knew how to keep the DNA of the mark while bringing it bang up to date.

WYT 2018 GALEON 640 FLY - LENGTH: 18.42 M

YACHTS FROM 62’ to 80’ (18.50 to 24 M)

Innovation Trophy

Considering that many boats on the market are ‘quite similar’, the Polish manufacturer decided to distinguish itself from the competition by proposing a particularly innovative and very different model. The well-calculated gamble paid off with this new 64-foot fly, which offers a multitude of new features such as the useful central opening in the windscreen that allows direct access to the foredeck from the saloon – and natural ventilation at anchor. Combined with fold-out terraces, from the bulwarks and two side windows, located on each side of the galley, and the possibility of choosing a cockpit layout that best meets one’s needs, the 640 Fly certainly feels novel.

SANLORENZO SX 76 - LENGTH: 23.35 M

YACHTS FROM 62’ to 80’ (18.50 to 24 M)

Interior design Trophy

Following the success of the 88, which was considered revolutionary in the yachting world, Sanlorenzo decided to launch this year an entry-level model with the same characteristics. Among its original features, the boat has a huge bathing platform capable of accommodating both a tender and a jet ski and a single cockpit positioned up on the fly, which can be completely closed thanks to a set of sliding windows. With this configuration, the boat benefits from a volume exclusively dedicated to leisure. The ultra modern decoration by Piero Lissoni is in perfect harmony with the spirit of the boat.

PERSHING 9X - LENGTH: 28.18 M After the unveiling last year of the Pershing 5X, whose unique feature was being propelled by a pair of IPS Volvo Penta pods, Pershing returns to its origins by returning, with the 9X, to a transmission driving surface-piercing propellers. The soul of the brand reappears, always combining performance and design with perfection. With the 9X, a star of Italian design Fulvio De Simoni created a new style, totally fresh and quite revolutionary with two side arches that surround the side decks. It is also difficult not to be dazzled by the interior decoration, which admirably combines a few shades of grey.

PEARL 95 - LENGTH: 29.20 M

YACHTS FROM 80’ to 125’ (24 to 38 M)

Layout Trophy

After the launch of the Pearl 80 this year, the British brand is reinforcing its range with a 95’ which by no means lacks originality and whose exterior design remains under the responsibility of naval architect Bill Dixon. A point of interest in this new yacht is the way it maximizes livable volumes while keeping a pure elegance. The very large windows, present in the superstructure, are skilfully integrated into the lines, an exercise that requires experience. Among its other original features, the Pearl 95 has a proper beach club fitted out in the stern, which extends wide over the water thanks to two lateral terraces. Kelly Hoppen’s decoration is, as-ever, a great success.

SANLORENZO SL 102 AS - LENGTH: 31.10 M

Sanlorenzo launches its first asymmetrical yacht, which redefines the concept of space by gaining nearly 10 m2 of living space. With this new configuration, the yacht becomes a semi-widebody whose advantage is to offer a much more direct access to the flybridge from the foredeck. This idea is the result of a new collaboration with Chris Bangle and Bernardo Zuccon, world-renowned names in the design field. With a larger area of glazing to port, the view becomes even more expansive, while to starboard the yacht still has a big enough window complementing its retractable balcony.

ARCADIA 105 A – LENGTH: 34.20 M

In the same spirit as the Arcadia 100, the Italian manufacturer launches the 105 A. A very futuristic semi-displacement whose originality is to comprise a sundeck in two parts: A forward part which can be completely closed thanks to a set of sliding electric windows and a second, completely open, aft which can be arranged as a lounge or for sunbathing. The former incorporates the main cockpit with a second lounge capable of accommodating a dozen guests for a comfortable lunch. Another distinctive point: the main saloon opens right up, at rest, when its two large windows are open and its two terraces deployed over the water.

AZIMUT GRANDE 32 METRI - LENGTH: 32 M The Azimut Grande 32 Metri is the perfect bigger sister to the 27 Metri released last year. It combines the DNA that built its success with a resolutely modern style worked up by the brand’s favourite designer: Stephano Righini. Benefits include its superb foredeck lounge, a huge fly bridge, which extends aft to just above the transom, big windows on each side of the saloon and, above all, the magnificent terrace, which unfolds over the water to one side of the owners’ suite. Achille Salvagni’s highly contemporary decoration feels particularly refined.

RIVA 110 DOLCE VITA - LENGTH: 33.53 M

After the release of the 100 last year, the Ferretti Group launches to the market the 110 Dolcevita based on a similar style. Bigger, wider and even more powerful with 2 x 2,638 horsepower, this yacht is again the work of Officina Italiana Design with the collaboration of the Ferretti Group’s inhouse studio. On board, noble materials are always in the spotlight with a perfect symbiosis between leather, marble, stainless steel, teak as well as furniture from major brands. The boat’s ‘duplex-style’ foredeck is large enough to accommodate a Jacuzzi adjacent to a huge sunpad, forward of a bench seat.

ILUMEN 28 M CADET V - LENGTH: 27.35 M

YACHTS FROM 80’ to 125’ (24 to 38 M)

Semi-custom Yacht Trophy

The success of the new Ilumen series, developed by the Italian shipyard Dominator, continues with the launch of new models fully customized according to the wishes of their individual owners. The exterior design remains the work of designer Alberto Mancini, while the interior decoration of this new yacht bears the signature of Luca Catino. Baptized Cadet V, this Ilumen 28 M offers an ultra-refined interior where each detail has been the subject of particularly thorough research. Compared to her predecessor, Kalliente, the interior layout has been completely modified with a larger owner’s cabin, accompanied by a fullwidth VIP and two further guest cabins. On the technical side, this boat is also to be propelled via line shaft transmission.

CUSTOM LINE 120 - LENGTH: 38.36 M

YACHTS FROM 125’ to 165’ (38 M to 50 M)

Exterior Design Trophy

Designed by Francesco Paszkowski, this new 120-footer is the largest yacht in the Custom Line planing series. This model also inaugurates a new infusion manufacturing process for the structure of the internal mouldings in order to obtain greater stiffness with the use of carbon. Like other units of the brand, the 120 is equipped with a new opening system for the garage, specially designed to facilitate the launching of the tender. Driven by its 2 x 2,638 horsepower, it reaches speeds of up to 25 knots.

GULF CRAFT MAJESTY 140 LENGTH: 43.30 M

A little more European style inspiration than usual is evident in this triple-decker made by the biggest manufacturer in the Emirates. Very large windows in the hull and superstructure flood natural light into the saloons and accommodation, comprising four guest cabins – cleverly positioned on the lower deck – a lounge of 55 m2 and an owners’ suite, which enjoys direct access to the elements thanks to its retractable balcony. In a very original way, one finds the same deck extension system on the aft deck. The fly bridge is vast and completely covered by a bimini that effectively shelters both the dining area and bar from the sun.

CUSTOM LINE NAVETTA 42 - LENGTH: 42 M

YACHTS FROM 125’ to 165’ (38 M to 50 M)

Innovation Trophy

Since the unveiling of the Navetta 37 last year, of which five are already sold, the Ferretti Group has launched its new flagship, which measures 42 metres. In order not to break the clean look, and especially the bold lines of the various decks, studio Zuccon chose to integrate the break lines of the retractable terraces almost invisibly into the structure. One original feature is that the beach club sports windows on each side to keep it even more in contact with the sea. Another technical feat was to install a large electric-operated window, right at the entrance to the owners’ suite.

BENETTI 50 M SEVEN - LENGTH: 49.80 M Blake is currently the largest GRP boat with aluminium superstructures built by Benetti. Its custom interior, offering exceptional quality of life, was designed in partnership with top London firm Bannenberg & Rowell Design. The guest area covers an area of 310 square metres and is divided into four cabins on the lower deck. A fifth VIP cabin can be specified on the upper deck. The interior design, created by the world-renowned design studio, includes a number of luxurious elements that create a truly opulent and welcoming atmosphere on board.

SANLORENZO 500 EXP - LENGTH: 47.20 M An evolution of the 460, the 500 EXP was designed in close collaboration with its owner who required, for this boat, a significantly longer stern platform in order to install a helipad there. The naval architecture offers seaworthiness and allows expeditions to the most remote regions of the globe, thanks to large stowage areas for atypical machines such as submarines, land vehicles as well as an array of toys. Designed by Francesco Paszkowski, the 500 EXP nevertheless remains a very luxurious yacht with a swimming pool and Jacuzzi directly accessible from the owner’s suite.

MANGUSTA 54 M GRANSPORT LENGTH: 54 M

This magnificently sleek yacht is also the first of a new series called GranSport, built in aluminium to save weight and thus improve performance. Its exceptional lines and interior decoration were realized in collaboration with Alberto Mancini and the builder’s in-house studio. As on the Oceano semi-displacement yachts, she takes up the magnificent idea of having an overflow pool occupying a large part of the foredeck. The beach club, which opens from the sides of the boat, is entirely devoted to leisure with a bar, deckchairs, fitness equipment and spa. Tender and toy storage is kept well out of harm’s way in the forward part of the hull.

Designed by the English design studio H2 Yacht Design, Go takes the spirit and DNA of its predecessors with a superb turquoise lacquer covering its hull. The hull, equipped with a bulb and innovative rudders, has been tested in towing tanks to obtain the least dynamic resistance. Go has a private deck adjoining the owner’s suite, which sports a Jacuzzi and a helipad. The garage, located in the central part of the hull, extends over an area of 162 m2 so as to be totally separated from the beach club that is dedicated to leisure. All decks are connected by a lift, which also serves the two VIP suites and six guest cabins.

It worked out perfectly, with the creation of an original design using a hull that had already proven its performance and seakeeping qualities. Irisha’s quite unique exterior and interior design is the work of British designers Harrison Eidsgaard. Their custom design incorporates elements of Heesen DNA, notably being an all-aluminium motor yacht below 500 GT.

MAIORA 36 This design is the fruit of MAIORA Style Centre’s successful collaboration with Quartostile design studio, based in Turin, whose considerable experience in the automotive industry has ensured the right balance between the sleekness of exterior lines and the maximization of interior volume. Exterior deck spaces are equally impressive, starting with the refined beach club area at the stern. This beach club is made possible by another particularity of this new Maiora design: a lateral tender garage which is located forward of the engine room and which is capable of housing a 5-metre tender, a full-size jet ski and other watertoys.

The Canados 888 Evo is simply a boat where it is almost impossible to find anything that is not well thought or practical and more than anything, easy to use. She offers a timeless yet modern classic design, even with her gigantic glass windows. The Canados 888 Evo is truly built like much larger yachts. It must be said that this iconic Rome-based shipyard is not new to the market since it has been producing yachts since 1946. Canados is one of the last traditional builders manufacturing its own interiors.

Both the exterior profile and the interior layout reflect the strong personality of the owner, Roberto Cavali, who asked for a yacht allowing maximum contact with the sea while also ensuring the utmost privacy. Fashion designer Roberto Cavalli personally designed her, in collaboration with his friend and designer Tommaso Spadolini. This 27-metre is a fast motor yacht, constructed with an aluminium hull and superstructure, capable of reaching a maximum speed of 40 knots thanks to three water-jet propulsion units. The master cabin, located behind the helm station, extends across the entire main deck for privacy and volume. A central skylight lets in plenty of natural light, while, aft, the large cockpit fitted with special blinds allows guests to fully enjoy a degree of privacy when stern to.

SIRENA 58 Designed by the Italian studio Tommaso Spadolini with a semi-displacement type hull developed by the renowned Frers team, this Turkish-built yacht does not lack originality. With its distinctive windows around the saloon and within the hull, the main selling point of this Sirena lies in the particularly well designed interior layout, that allows the forward cabin to benefit from its own direct access to the deck – a detail that is normally only found on larger yachts.

TANKOA 72 M SOLO The Tankoa 72-metre Solo is the second yacht by this high-tech Genoa shipyard to be built on the same technical platform. Tankoa, in a very short time has made itself an enviable reputation for very high quality yachts holding its own against the best Northern European brands. The arrangement of the tensioned fabric awnings is particularly calming. 15. Dar offers all the essential equipment on a yacht of this size. The racy exterior profile of Irisha is not visible in the show, the boat being stern-to, however SuperYachtsMonaco, the brokers exhibiting her, had thoughtfully put some images on display quayside. Racy lines are, after all, one good reason people come to Heesen, and Irisha sports some of the biggest complex-curvature, streamlined windscreens in the industry. In Irisha’s case, the owners were more after an entertainment platform for day trips with their friends than a sleep-aboard cruiser. In fact, they told Jim Evans – Managing Director at SuperYachtsMonaco, who had sold them their previous Heesen – from the outset that they wanted a day boat to keep in front of their Italian villa and take family and friends out for lunch with. A top speed of 25 knots was specified to allow them to get to a prime lunchtime anchorage quicker than most and depart for the return journey, after a siesta in the five cabins, but still get that prime stern-to berth in popular ports. There is an experimental feel about Irisha’s finishes, with unusual wallpapers – if that’s not too unflattering a word for these ubiquitous high-end surfaces. Harri-

son Eidsgaard clearly relished in designing for these – dare I suggest it – ‘restrained-bling’ owners? Ewa Eidsgaard immediately countered: “The owners actually are not very blingy. They are quite understated and wanted the interior to be calm, serene but sophisticated. Use of colour was important and each room has some stronger accent of colour sitting comfortably against quasi monochromatic background.” Nevertheless, the brief gave Harrison Eidsgaard the chance to play with tactile senses and go hell for leather (one reason they won the pitch was having done a record speed refit design on the previous Heesen) specifying fur bedspreads, a wooden bath, silk bedheads and ceilings plus enough coloured onyx to cover Jimmy’z dance floor. Two convertible twin cabins can be joined up to form one double ‘bachelor pad’ for a teenage son, the beds being modular. The day head sports a kind of ‘hall of mirrors’ sculpture – a polished stainless steel mirror, shaped like an upmarket squashed metallic balloon, allowing magnified facial inspections should you need to powder your nose, with a backdrop of sparkling glitter embedded into the dark blue wallpaper. The “bubble” mirror is by

Heesen 51 m Polish designer Maja Zieta and the “reflective wallcovering” – named “Rockstar” – by Phillip Jeffries of New Jersey. Ewa describes it as a “moody, clubby room”. But before you reach the day head, when boarding from the passerelle, you arrive on a large aft deck that really does benefit from the indoor-outdoor flow so often talked of. So much so that it is arguable whether the saloon is an indoor or outdoor space – it is officially termed the ‘winter garden’ and classed as outdoors, teak decks flowing flush. The dining area forward is reached by passing through a second set of glass doors and the two spaces can be joined to allow a party of 20 to lunch at one long table, custom made by Heesen, which extends out through the opened doors. The hefty engine room exhaust stacks were pushed forward – where the room noticeably narrows – to allow unbroken window lines to flank the aft part of the table. The grey carpet is easy clean, perfect for decadent guests – or SuperYachtsMonaco charterers – who might spill a drink. Ewa describes the serene monochromatic look with cold grey and beige as ‘greige’, the designer term for the new oatmeal.

The dining room is immediately forward of the ‘winter garden’ and its table can extend out through the glass doors into it to seat 20 guests

Satin wood finishes complement the ‘50 shades of greige’ fabrics (my words, not Ewa’s). A dark textured finish connects the TV wall with the ceiling in the dining room, outsourced to DKT Artworks of London by Harrison Eidsgaard. Moving forward to the lobby, the first thing you feel is that the open winding staircase going up and down feels as if it belongs on a bigger yacht, its stucco finish giving a smooth sculptural look. The handrail snakes its way up, attached to the glass baluster. The staircase was finished on site but the linear and textured panels were produced in DKT’s studios before finishing on site. DKT workmanship is simply flawless, to be expected after 39 years in the business. The owners’ office is quite masculine, with darker veneers, the focal point being a cantilevered desk. A beautiful touch is the forward-facing window that overlooks the owners’ personal terrace, sporting a reclined double sun-cum-relaxation bed facing aft and double sofa facing forward – the perfect spot for quiet, reflective outdoor moments away from guests. Moving on into the master stateroom, ‘his’ dressing is

Textures are ubiquitous in the owners’ suite from the braided wool and silk OT carpet up to the ceiling panel by Claudy Jonstra, also of wool and silk. The full-beam master bathroom offers a choice of a stunning high-gloss Macassar bath, by Alegna Baths, or an inviting ‘double therapy shower’.

The double bed is covered in fur – nobody would say if real or fake, but I’d say real – while its hand-felted headboard and ‘feature ceiling’ (a shame not to use it) are by Claudy Jonstra, described by Ewa as “custom degradé design made of silk and wool”. The braided wool and silk carpet is by OT (Oliver Treutlein), its softness and texture a delight to walk on. Nightstands and credenza benefit from an attractive high-gloss pitted-bronzed finish with stained walnut. ‘Her’ dressing room is aft of her dressing table to port, while on the forward bulkhead is a piece of art that can transform into a TV, flanked by twin doors leading to a spacious full-beam bathroom, whose pièce de résistance is undoubtedly the high-gloss wooden Macassar bath by Alegna Baths. It is probably an idea to rinse any sand off one’s toes in the “double therapy shower” (yes, I thought that too) before setting foot in this artwork. The degradé motif is again evident in the vanity units executed by Heesen, horizontal strips stained lighter as you go up. Down below, passing “blue impasto” hand-painted cabinet doors at the bottom of the staircase, also crafted by DKT, guest suites each have their own colour

accent. Artworks are by Alex Turco, with an onyx wall (brown, green, blue or purple) and clever-designed lighting. Ceiling lights are so hard to get right but the system worked up, with three “scenes”, for Harrison Eidsgaard, “optimizes space and adds texture” with textured circular overheads – again by DKT. Circular portholes give natural light and a nautical touch. Two flights up, passing more artwork, and one reaches a spacious relatively empty landing, rather like the luxury of having white space on a brochure page. A dog – this one is fake, or certainly dead – appears to burrow into the floor in the corner with its bottom in the air, apparently a signature feature of Harrison Eidsgaard, but not compulsory. Aft is the skylounge, whose “Barn in the City” bar is made from a 150-yearold barn door, covered in a smooth transparent resin, glowing gold. The Prince Albert II Foundation would approve of this gesture towards sustainability! I noticed a turntable in the corner and started to imagine getting out the vinyl LPs and chilling out on the sofas up here, in particular the window seat that cleverly disguises the intrusion of the external staircase and offers a cosy forward-facing spot from which to watch the ocean go by. THE BROKER JIM EVANS

Ten minutes with Jim Evans, Managing Director of SuperYachtsMonaco, who is relocating to new, walk-in, shop-front premises in Monaco’s swanky Rue Grimaldi. “I don’t think it is bling at all! I already knew the client well, having sold him his previous two boats, the last one being a 42-metre Heesen. During that tenure he asked me to pull together a project team for the next boat, pushing it up from some 440 GT to 499 GT. He had enjoyed owning “Petra”, Frans Heesen’s own boat, and noted the Heesen quality. Criteria included 25 knots and the basic brief was for Irisha to be a day boat – inconceivable, when you look at her, but true. Watersports were important too. The lunch table extends to seat 20. We did a beauty parade of three or four designers and yards, but all roads led to Heesen. The naval architecture and platform is from Heesen’s 50-metre but it was a fully custom job, starting four years ago. Harrison Eidsgaard has been growing organically over the years and did a great job. Acting as the owner’s representative you do fight with shipyards, for example elements of paint had to be redone and some pieces of glass had to be changed – but Heesen were fantastic. I act for the owner and get the team together and coordinate the project. Our philosophy is quite different to the big brokerage houses, where they like to take care of everything in-house and own all the IP (Intellectual Property) of the project. Beware – if you fall out with the big brokers and decide to take back control of your new build you’ll take maybe two years to get the IP back, while your hull sits on hold. At SuperYachtsMonaco we assemble teams – I take care of commercial and liaison with the client and we have an entirely separate technical team outside, that has worked on big Abramovich projects, independent of us and paid directly by the client. So the client can get rid of any element during the project and we have noticed that owners like this – I believe it is a new way forward. In these ‘big black box houses’, as I call them, there is an inherent conflict of interest – for example at the end of a not-quite-finished project they might say, ‘we need this boat because we’ve already booked charters on it’, and they rush it out. Ours is, I believe, a new approach (for a brokerage house) and clients like it and appreciate it. Everything is transparent. I go to the shipyard every month – we don’t just turn up, like some brokers, for the Champagne on the launch day! I’ve personally done three significant new builds and have a fourth underway.”

ta, gives an informal touch to the room. Aft on this wheelhouse deck is another table for smaller lunches and fixed lounge seating in a C-shape inviting conviviality without the need to drag the Sutherland teak chairs about. Sutherland especially reproduced its Great Lakes model in teak for the client. Another flight up and this feels like the party deck, with sunpads around the Jacuzzi aft and twin parallel bars traversing the space forward, cocktail waitresses or barmen sandwiched in between. Looking forward, one is also distracted by the large companionway, revealing the wheelhouse and its array of instruments, all behind the vast tinted windscreen. A leather sofa and table allows guests to do some backseat driving, not encouraged during manoeuvring. Also not visible in the show is what Harrison Eidsgaard describes as the “generous beach club”, with a New England style day head, massage/lounge area and a “sauna with a view”. The perfect platform to enjoy a swim from, in clean water away from the beach, this is where I imagine myself as the owner, aboard Irisha with a fur spread out for an informal post-sauna picnic of iced vodka and caviar, wondering where it all went wrong.

Mangusta 54 GranSport Mangusta is one of the last family-owned brands in the nautical industry that since 1950 has been owned by the Balducci family. Over the years, the Overmarine group has built a solid reputation for the outstanding design of the Mangusta series, its exceptional engineering, its attention to detail and its ability to interpret the needs and demands of its customers. With more than 100 yachts over 30 metres delivered – the majority of those in recent years – Mangusta confirms its leading position in the world of maxi Open boats, but also in the displacement boat segment, with the Oceano series, which already has four hulls under construction in just two years. Today, its range is expanding and now includes the Mangusta Gran Sport (GS) line, which combines both performance and autonomy. The yacht can reach a top speed of 30 knots and cross the Atlantic at cruising speed. With a range of 4,200 nautical miles and a hull sporting a bulbous bow, it can cope with difficult sea conditions in the greatest comfort. Unlike its predecessors, after many hours of research, into how to achieve optimal performance, KaMeWa water-jets have been replaced

El Leon

by direct prop shafts – reliable transmission that delivers the best power at different speeds.

The interior dining table also benefits from good views thanks to the large windows. The large space is beautifully detailed using leather and wood finishes.

Outdoor facilities El Leon immediately strikes the eye with its balanced proportions and elegant profile. Its quite aggressive exterior lines are the hallmark of the new Mangusta GranSport line designed by Alberto Mancini. The owner of El Leon has known the Mangusta brand for a long time. He chose this model because he wants to use his yacht both to cruise in the Mediterranean and to discover other parts of the world, spending long periods on board while still being able to follow his business. The layout was therefore duly designed to meet these needs and resulted in a truly customized configuration with a large office and garage that could accommodate a 7.5-metre tender. El Leon offers more than 273 m² of outdoor space, from flybridge to beach club, to allow guests to enjoy several spots to relax whether they choose to be exposed to or sheltered from the sun. Many technical solutions have been worked up to improve the general comfort of the

boat. For example, the overflow Jacuzzi pool on the foredeck is equipped with a transparent bottom that floods the bathroom just below with light. In the stern, the beach club, thanks to its two lateral terraces that extend above the water, extends over an area of more than 70 m2. To avoid cluttering up this space which is mainly reserved for leisure and relaxation, the tenders and various nautical toys are housed in the front structure of the hull. The flybridge covers an area of nearly 100 m2! The dining area installed in a central position is protected from the sun by a roof equipped with four transparent panels that diffuse a carefully filtered light. Other windows embedded in the roof arch allow diners to enjoy views of the surroundings. Everything has been designed so that passengers can stay in continuous contact with the sea.

Interior fitout The interior design was also carried out by Alberto Mancini with the help of Overmarine’s Design Department. Ceiling heights exceed 2.10 metres, but they seem even higher thanks to the skilful use of light. The teak soles have lighter wood seams breaking up the planking while the leather ceilings and the furniture form a superb contrast with ebony and walnut. The main saloon is extremely airy and filled with natural light thanks to the presence of windows that extend from floor to ceiling. The owner’s suite is located on the main deck forward with access from the lobby to a private office. The suite also has a large terrace overlooking the sea. The lower deck houses the guest cabins (two VIPs and two further suites), as well as a fully-equipped gymnasium and reading room. All the spaces share the same attention to detail, the use of the best materials and an LED lighting system that creates a refined atmosphere.

the bar while forward, on this nearly 100m2 deck, is a sheltered 12-seater dining table.

Seakeeping and performance Designed by the Ausonio studio, the hull can be defined as a “Fast Surface Piercing Hull”. This very specific shape of hull has been developed using fluid hydrodynamics software in order to obtain the best possible performance both at maximum speed and at an economical cruising speed. After analysing the results, the choice was made to use a propulsion system with four engines coupled to direct shaft lines. The choice of the bulbous bow on high-speed boats is relatively recent at international level, but in Italy it is quite a common practice that has existed for a very long time on military vessels. The four propellers were specifically designed by the naval architect to avoid any risk of cavitation depending on the boat’s speed and trim. According to the Plana studio, the 54 Gran Sport’s planing is optimized by about 15 to 20% compared to other types of hulls at full speed and this result would increase to 50% at 15 knots. This significant performance improvement makes it possible to design a high-speed motor boat over 50 metres long with a relatively low installed power, easily cruising above 25 knots, but above all, with a fuel capacity of about 70 cubic metres to achieve an autonomy of 4,800 miles at 12 knots and 3500 miles at 15 knots – a characteristic that is not common in other boats. The other challenge was to achieve the same level of sound insulation as on displacement hulls and the result was as good as anything we’ve witnessed, with only 53 decibels recorded in the living room at 20 knots. For the general stabilization of the boat, OverHighly raked windscreens and dark anti-reflective surfaces in the wheelhouse carry the aggressive feel to the interior.

Conclusion Rarely has such a level of engineering at Overmarine been developed on a new mega yacht that so successfully blends the ideal compromise between performance and range. Thanks to a new hull and a quadruple-propulsion, the world’s oceans outside the Arctic are now within reach of Mangusta Gran Sport owners.

FOUR ENGINES FOR OPTIMAL PLANING Francesco Frediani, Overmarine’s sales manager and his chief engineer give us some explanations on the technical choice of a quadruple engine. “Overmarine has long been the leader in propulsion using four engines. The assembly of four engines for Overmarine is an experiment that dates back to 2015 with the release of the Mangusta 165, so it was an obvious decision to develop this type of installation on the new 54 GranSport. After several months of research, our chief engineer approved this choice, which has been tested on board many military vessels. In their specifications, they need to cruise slowly for many hours but they must also have the ability to accelerate quickly in the event of a possible interception. So our engineer started working with the architecture studio Ausonio to develop the concept. The idea was to obtain the greatest possible range at slow cruising speed but also to be able to reach 30 knots. After studying the hydrodynamics and the location of the tanks on a computer to avoid any risk of cavitation, it seemed to us that we were heading in the right direction. To distribute all the power required to drive this boat, the choice of a quadruple-propulsion allows for better balance and less vibration. In addition, four MTU engines in the 2,000 series are lighter than two engines in the 4,000 series. The adaptation of the exhaust system for two large engines would have been likely to be larger than for four. The option of propeller shafts compared to KaMeWa transmissions with which we are used to working is explained by the specific requirements of the semidisplacing hull with a bulb. The performance at different rpm ranges seemed more effective with this propulsion mode.

The result of collaboration between the Florentine architect’s firm and the “Strategic Product Committee” of the Ferretti Group, led by engineer Piero Ferrari and its engineering department, the Custom Line 120’ embodies the perfect combination of many stylistic elements inspired by automotive design and terrestrial residential architecture. The shapes and volumes have been the subject of in-depth research in order to enhance them through design decisions in line with the most recent trends in contemporary life. The first model in the new “planing” series, this yacht adopts the configuration of a two-and-a-half decker with a raised wheelhouse called “RPH” (Raised Pilot House) and a “wide body” at the bow with a layout

that extends over the entire width of the hull. It offers the visual appearance of a three-decker and the extension of the black windows on the upper level reinforces this perception. The sleek and powerful profile highlights the strong lines that run from stem to stern. The metallic grey of the very discreet hard top brings an additional dynamic touch, worthy of a Grand Touring car. The black glazing and domes combine harmoniously with the immaculate whiteness of the hull and superstructure. The choice of the absence of bulwarks, large and generous hull windows and large superstructure windows are also quite radical stylistic elements. For a first assignment, within the demanding Ferretti group, Francesco was able to deploy all his talent. During its official presentation at the 2018 Cannes Yachting Festival, the Italian shipyard showed us aboard the second Custom Line 120’ destined for a European owner, the first boat being based in the Bahamas for an American owner. As for the third, it is already under construction at the La Spezia shipyard. The Custom Line 120 follows the new decoration trend of furnishing yachts with furniture, more typical of shore residences, such as on this aft deck lounging zone with a very lightweight feel.

Outdoor facilities We take the stairs from the aft deck up to the flybridge. The notion of an outdoor living room takes on its full dimension here. The flybridge’s side windows, invisible from the dock, offer an unexpected view of the sea. This deck is protected by a hard top, which is supported by two lightweight arches, which appear light and elegant in profile. The two skylights give the impression of being outdoors. Custom Line 120’ king it easier to launch the tender as well as get out of the water. The garage can accommodate a tender of up to 5.65 metres and a jet ski. Once lowered to water level, the door acts as an outdoor beach club suitable for receiving removable parasols. In accordance with the Custom Line tradition, there is another garage in the forward structure, which can be used to store a 3.25-metre tender or a jet ski. Interior fitout Back on the main aft deck, we discover the interior fittings, which present many innovations thanks to the talented Francesco Paszkowski who works in tandem with his loyal collaborator Margherita Casprini, in charge of interior decoration. The design of the cockpit is seductive with its contemporary style and unusual furniture, consisting of a very beautiful sofa and a semi-circle. The furniture seems to float on deck and gives a feeling of lightness and freshness. The main innovation is the glass door that gives access to the saloon. It is inclined at 45° and, in addition to the usual sliding opening of the two glass panels, it is equipped with a tilting mechanism that allows it to be lifted completely and inserted into the ceiling. Developed in collaboration with Mecaer Aviation Group – as its name suggests, a company in the aviation industry – this door connects the aft deck area to the lounge, creating a unique environment of more than 80 m2 covered with teak, with curtains that can be used as a partition. This ‘French window’, weighing 1.5 tonnes, must be folded down when cruising at over 12 knots for safety reasons. Francesco specified a clean space, the ultimate luxury on board a boat. The interior design is inspired by the principles of luxury residential architecture and includes, among other elements, support columns that integrate lighting, audio and air conditioning systems. The large central living room is equipped with tall windows, which run from the floor to the ceiling, and, in the absence of exterior bulwarks, allow natural light to flood the living room, creating an effect of greater continuity with the sea. A detail of refinement desired by Francesco, the giant panes are not flat but curved. Treated like a loft, the main deck saloon features an L-shaped sofa facing aft for a view of the outside deck and a dining room with a marble table for up to ten guests. A leather-covered side cabinet separates the two areas. On the sole large carpets delineate living and dining areas. Margherita has favoured the use of leather to sheath shapes and clad support structures, partitions or beautiful door handles. On either side of the very beautiful piece of furniture that defines this space, there are two sliding glass doors. The one to

port leads to a corridor, also accessible from the exterior deck, which serves a galley-cum- pantry, from which the crew quarters forward of the lower deck are accessed. These include a mess, a galley, captain’s cabin with a small office, a stewardess cabin and two twin cabins for deck crew. Each has a private bathroom with a separate shower cubicle. From the same corridor, a stairway leads to the wheelhouse located half a level above. Here, the master can use the integrated control system developed with Naviop-Simrad, creating a single direct interface with the ship’s functions and allowing total control. An internal staircase connects it directly to the flybridge. The door to starboard leads to the lobby, which leads on to the lower level via a magnificent staircase highlighted by a clever set of lights. Then, we reach the vast suite of the owner of more than 35 m2, which spreads over the whole beam thanks to the “wide body” configuration. It includes an office facing the separate dressing room and a lounge area on the right. On the sole a carpet

delineates the night area to port. The bathroom also extends over the entire beam of the boat and its access serves two distinct areas, for Mrs and Mr with a very beautiful central shower. Both the suite and the bathroom benefit from remarkable amount of light due to the large windows. On request, the owner can also have a panoramic fold-out terrace installed. The lower deck, dedicated to guests, has four cabins. The two VIPs at the rear are equipped with beds cleverly arranged facing the bulwark in order to benefit from visual contact with the natural element through the very large hull windows. The two forward cabins are equipped with single beds, to which a Pullman bed can be added. These four cabins are equipped with bathrooms with a separate shower cubicle and a breathtaking view of the sea, a rare benefit that deserves to be highlighted. Seakeaping and performance The fibreglass hull is formed by vacuum infusion. Particular attention has been paid to the structures in order to offer maximum lightness and optimal strength. The use of carbon in the superstructure has resulted in an elegant design without the need for support struts beneath on the aft deck. The hull has been carefully optimized for planing, to ensure excellent performance and reasonable fuel consumption, while

taking into account the volume and displacement of the vessel. Powered by two MTU diesel engines (16V 2000 M96L) producing 2638 horsepower each, this Custom Line, claiming a 25-knot maximum speed, perfectly fulfilled its contract. During the test in the bay of Cannes, with some fifteen people on board, 15,000 litres of fuel and water, its captain Andrea gave us a maximum speed of 25.4 knots. At an economic cruising speed of 11 knots, he reminds us that this 38-metre boat has a range of 1,100 miles. Comfort underway is superb and the stabilisers, either at zero-speed or underway, perfectly fulfil their task. As for noise pollution and various vibrations, they are imperceptible because the Custom Line 120’ has a floating floor and additional insulation between the partitions and in the deckheads.

All of the Custom Line 120’s exterior spaces have been designed to take advantage of the marine environment. From bow to stern, the symbiosis between the boat and the sea seems to be maximum.

Conclusion The Custom Line 120’ is a yacht with an obvious originality and its cleverly orchestrated design allows it to stand out from the competition. Its success seems assured judging by the number of orders taken and the study of a “little sister” of 106’ is already planned. With many qualities, this unit can satisfy demanding owners, knowing that they will have the opportunity to “customize” according to their own desires. Custom Line is aptly named...

SANLORENZO SX88 A revolutionary concept

Sanlorenzo introduces a new motoryacht concept that brings together and synthesizes different design solutions, different decorative styles and different opportunities in order to experience the sea in a freer, more convivial but intense way. Discover this new concept. Text: Roberto Franzoni Photos: Tommaso Sartori, Leo Torri

Stated by the manufacturer as being a true Crossover of the sea, the SX 88 bristles with innovation, including original features such as the ability to carry a larger tender than usual for a boat of this size.

Sanlorenzo is making a highly visible entry into the world yachting scene, with a yacht that offers a multitude of new intelligent, rational and practical design solutions. SX88 is a new beast, a new 27 metre motoryacht, the first of a range that will also comprise the smaller SX72 and eventually the SX116. Some of the main technical innovations developed by the manufacturer are: a very advanced construction process with the assembly of various prefabricated modules; a superstructure made of carbon fibre; propulsion provided by three Volvo Penta IPS pods; a semi-displacement hull type, capable of reaching a maximum speed of 23 knots — according to theoretical studies carried out in the tank facilities of Wageningen, The Netherlands; a single wheelhouse positioned on the flybridge and a completely uncluttered aft area to house tender and nautical ‘toys’ and sports equipment. SX88 represents an intelligent synthesis between the classic motoryacht with flying bridge – of which Sanlorenzo has

been, and continues to be, one of the world leaders – with a range of four models from 27 to 36 metres. The project concept for this innovative and advanced motoryacht was born in the Sanlorenzo’s design office, with the creative input of Chris Bangle – who is at the heart of the SX brand – and Officina Italiana Design, represented by Mauro Micheli and Sergio Beretta, designers of the exterior aesthetic.

Designed by Piero Lissoni, the decoration is minimal and totally unique in the market.

Outdoor facilities SX88 bases its functional and aesthetic characteristics by offering large open spaces. It features big picture windows that guarantee efficient and optimal internal / external communication, a theme increasingly requested by experienced owners. Another feature of the SX 88, is its single cockpit, located on the fly bridge – which can be completely closed – thanks to a set of sliding windows and, on request, by a fullheight sliding window across its aft end. Opening the

The tender and the water toys are easily launched thanks to a clever crane system integrated in the bulwarks. The only wheelhouse being placed on the fly, the lounge has a considerable amount of space.

The overall finish is faultless throughout but the SX88’s interior remains fully customizable, just like all models from the builder.

hard top roof is achieved by rotating a series of roof slats, a technically elegant design solution. The single wheelhouse concept makes it possible to completely free up the prime space, located in the forward part of the main deck, and allows the fitting out of a saloon or possibly the owners’ suite in this area. The forward part of the deck area is particularly well arranged to offer a friendly modular space which works as a sun pad or lunch area. The stern is even more surprising. The bathing platform is so large that it is capable of carrying a tender four metres long in addition to two jet skis. The crane design is elegant, being integrated into one of the bulwarks so that the sports and leisure equipment can be easily moved, but without impacting the aesthetic look of the yacht. One couldn’t do it better. Another advantage is, once its equipment is in the water, the bathing platform becomes an extraordinary beach club of 30 m2. To make the most of the sea, the SX 88 is equipped with the ingenious “Transformer” system, designed by Opacmare, which allows

Sanlorenzo SX88 guests to get on board from a tender in the greatest comfort or enjoy a swim in complete safety. Interior fitout The interior design of the first SX88 was created by Piero Lissoni – considered ‘The Italian Starck’ – along with David Lopez, Stefano Castelli and Marco Gottardi. A pioneer in this field, Sanlorenzo has built over the years a very precise and coherent design concept that skilfully integrates architecture and design. With a strong desire to differentiate itself from the traditionalist universe, Sanlorenzo has inaugurated a new decorative style. The designers were given free rein and encouraged to experiment in order to develop, for the first time in a motor yacht, a language and aesthetic from a totally different world – the concept of “home-living” interpreted each time according to the experience and style of each of them. Thanks to the new concept of this yacht, Lissoni opted for an open galley, adjacent to the dining space, followed by the saloon with an unobstructed view towards the sea. “I keep imagining the boats, even the very large ones, as if they were lofts, with very open spaces offering a great quality of life and especially the ability to stay in

contact with the people aboard”, comments Piero Lissoni. Piero Lissoni’s hallmarks can also be seen in the choice of furniture, which is arranged as freely as in a house. Boffi has been selected for the kitchen design, amongst the many major brands.

For the first time, Sanlorenzo opted to go for a triple power plant, using pods which allow the boat to have its interior volume optimised and to navigate at up to 23.5 knots maximum.

Marine behaviour and performance SX 88 behaves like a great sportfisherman at sea, thanks to the particularly powerful hull, which has a very deep V. The passage through the waves is particularly efficient and very smooth, as if she sported a semi displacement hull. Navigation and anchoring stability is provided by electric CMC fins that reduce roll by 85%. Sanlorenzo has always paid great attention to acoustic and thermal insulation. On the SX 88, the low noise level is guaranteed not only by the efficient insulation, in accordance with Classification society standards, but also by the very remote location of the three Volvo Penta engines. The shaftless design of the IPS also reduces the noise associated with a conventional in-line shaft transmission. The three Volvo IPS 800s, in addition to optimising interior volume and reducing vibration, provide the SX88 with a range of around 1,000 miles at 12 knots.

Another significant innovation: the single steering position is on the fly. Its sliding side windows make it easy to completely close the area, if one chooses. There is an option to have a window behind the helm too.

Conclusion The SX88 is built in the historic Ameglia shipyard, where Sanlorenzo’s headquarters are located. The new course plotted by the SX88 was immediately endorsed by the market. Since its launch last year at the Cannes Yachting Festival, many orders have been placed. This appears to be a winning concept.

GALEON 640 FLY Difference through innovation

Discovered at the last DĂźsseldorf boat show, this new yacht immediately caught our attention with its conviviality and its various innovations. With more than 16 orders registered, the research work carried out by the Polish manufacturer has clearly given immediate returns. Text : Franck Van Espen

Located near the town of Gdanks in Poland, the Galeon shipyard, which is still a completely private company, has in just a few years become one of Europe’s largest manufacturers. To be placed at this level, Galeon is not only satisfied to manufacture boats of an excellent quality/price ratio, but also shows a certain audacity in terms of layout and is sometimes inspired, like on this 640 fly, by the superyacht world. The design is realised by veteran British naval architect Tony Castro, then it is subjected to the in-house design team at the yard who suggest various modifications according to the needs of international markets. Very well established in Europe with a large network, Galeon is very successful in the United States in particular in Florida with Marine Max, which is one of the largest dealers in the country. One of Galeon’s strengths is that it can easily adapt to the different needs of particular markets. For example: The Galeon 640

in its US version has a much larger fly that extends right aft to just above the transom. Without falling into a semi-customization service, Galeon is able to meet certain specific demands thanks to its flexibility. Another strong point is that, apart from mechanics and electronics, everything is tailor-made by the yard.

At Galeon, everything apart from the electronics and propulsion system is made to measure, allowing an interior perfectly matching clients’ needs.

Outdoor facilities As the current trend demands, the hull and superstructures of the Galeon 640 offer a level of transparency rarely achieved. The same goes for conviviality. The cockpit, well protected from the sun by its overhang, is the ideal place to receive friends and share a meal in the greatest comfort. The generous bench seat, upholstered in Bentley style, runs the entire beam of the boat around a nicely solid table. Opposite, the large window lifts electrically so that the galley remains in contact with guests on deck. A TV screen comes out

from the kitchen wall so that you can watch a film while having an al fresco lunch. In addition to this particularly interesting arrangement, the manufacturer offers “Beachmode” as an option. This allows the bulwarks to be folded out to form two terraces above the water (or diving boards for children). The other technical feat is to have placed two big windows on each side of the saloon that open, each side of a bar. Hard to do better in terms of space sharing! But Galeon was not satisfied with this magnificent technical achievement alone. The whole foredeck is fitted out with a superb outdoor lounge whose USP is the ability for the various elements to be adjusted in various ways, forming a large sunpad or a dining area; Finally the jewel in the crown, Galeon had the brilliant idea of installing a door in the centre of the windscreen. This feature, which is standard – and the only item outsourced to a British subcontractor – came to be after a thorough study to ensure complete waterproofness and high resistance to the impact of green water. The mechanism is quite convoluted with a flap that lifts in the upper part first. The door then slides up and disappears into the ceiling structure; quite beautiful! The fly bridge is arranged in the same spirit with an immense bench which is articulated around several folding tables with

Beach mode is a particularly interesting solution, which allows owners to expand the cockpit deck surface by folding down the bulwarks and windows. Bar stools complete the area.

a very generous sunpad placed forward of the helm station. The whole area is protected from the sun by a rigid top, sporting a canvas bimini. Interior fitout The hydraulic platform with a lifting capacity up to 700 kg is immense and it also makes it possible to directly enter a fourth independent cabin that is very well equipped with laundry and shower room. It is perfectly situated to accommodate a crew should the boat be used for charter. In case this cabin is not required, it can be use as a tender garage. As soon as you enter the saloon, the differences to usual living spaces are immediately evident by abundant natural light. The location of the galley at the entrance to the saloon is a wise choice. On the other side, a small office has been set up facing the sea. Next to it, a descent allows one to reach the two midships cabins, which can be transformed, according to needs, into a three-cabin version. The interior dining area in front of the second TV – that can be hidden – is huge and ultra comfortable thanks to a U-shaped sofa with a very deep seat. The

158

Yachts Europe 01.indb 158

19/10/2018 11:38

Galeon 640 Fly general refinement can be seen by the craftsmanship on the different joinery, on the LEDs inlaid in the ceiling and by the light delicately integrated behind the superb decoration covering the furniture. Two easily adjustable seats are installed in front of the cockpit, well organized and equipped with a Raymarine IMIS screen – which manages all the domestic appliances on board. A side door makes it possible to join the side deck, which is quite narrow but of course allows a bigger interior. The manufacturer considered that with the central passage it was preferable to favour the space of the living zone. A second staircase leads to the third fully independent VIP cabin, which occupies the entire forward part of the boat. The VIP cabin occupies

Seakeeping and performance A visit to the engine room allows us to see once again, the excellent work done on the organization and general installation. The operation of the generator, isolated in its cocoon, is hardly perceptible thanks to a carefully filtered exhaust, tucked under the bathing platform. The two forward and aft thrusters are

the forward part of the boat and enjoys its own direct access from the deck. Back lighting for the dressing table mirror is an original and neat feature.

extremely useful for manoeuvring in and out of tight berths or locks – it takes almost an hour along a river to reach the Baltic. During this trip we take great pleasure to enjoy the different equipment on board and cruise gently at nearly 7 knots with steering gear allowing great precision. The helm position doesn’t deserve the slightest criticism, and as soon as we leave the estuary, we push the throttle to finally discover the dynamic qualities of this speedboat, driven by a dual Volvo Penta engine with a total of 2,000 shaft horsepower. An IPS assembly is available but the yard doesn’t see much interest in it due to the recognized reliability of the shaft line and the much lower maintenance cost. The assembly is of such high precision that no vibration is felt. The noise level recorded was 78 decibels at cruising speed – or 25 knots – is within the average of other boats of this class. By making several turns across our wake, we noted that waves have practically no effect on the excellent hull developed by Galeon. Stability at rest is perfect and it is not necessary to use the automatic trim function to easily reach thirty knots.

GRZEGORZ TUSZYNSKI MANAGING DIRECTOR

Since our creation in 1982, our company has not stopped growing and we currently have two production sites on which 1200 people work. The first yard is able to manufacture boats up to 48 feet that are then transported by truck to their final destination. Each boat is tested in a pool. Our second construction site is located near a river which flows into the Baltic and it has its own marina. It’s a facility dedicated to boats of over 50 feet LOA on which we have invested a lot in very high technology machinery to increase our productivity. We are also constantly working on the development of new ideas like the “beach mode” to differentiate ourselves from the competition. This option is available on many models. The latest piece of equipment that we are developing is a built-in door in the windshield. We really want to make ourselves known in the market by our many innovations. Another important point is that, at Galeon, nearly everything is created at the factory whether stainless steel, upholstery or joinery. We have a fairly simple management, always remaining very flexible to adapt according to the needs of the market. We are a private company that sets itself targets and then give ourselves every means to achieve them. Yes Europe was our main market with France, Germany, Spain and Russia, and we are currently being received with great success in the United States.

Each boat undergoes individual sea trials before delivery to the dealer.

Conclusion With its many innovations and well thought-out layouts, the Galeon 640 is extremely user-friendly and stands out from most of its competitors. Offered at a competitive price, including a comprehensive standard specification, with an excellent quality finish and a classic engine, with low maintenance cost, we understand why the order book is already well filled.
