WEEK 3 READING: TITLE OF READING

Question 1: What is Pictorial Space according to Le Corbusier? (Maximum 100 words) According to Le Corbusier, Pictorial Space is a space that cannot be accessed physically. It is a fixed and unalterable space that can only be viewed frontally from at specific distance and place. In this sense, looking through a window is same as viewing a painting as they frame the observer in a certain place at a space that cannot be accessed by them.

Question 2: The Flatness of Le Corbusier’s painting’s are attributable to two properties. What are they? And what are these pitted against?(Maximum 100 words) The flatness of Le Corbusier’s paintings is attributed to his use of distance and depth. Firstly, Le Corbusier believes that distance is merely a buffer, a time frame that separates the recognition of the object from the object itself; as it is the only logical approach for his frontal Pictorial Space. Secondly, Le Corbusier uses depth as a textural contrast that separates objects from the ground, giving them definition. Conclusively, these are pitted against the concept using distance and depth as three-dimensional properties to invade the flat Pictorial Space.

MARIO’S WORLD

3

1ST MARIO’S WORLD

This is the hand drawing of the first mario’s world, it is scanned after finelining and is presented as the front view of the combined world. It is in a basic form that represents the initial mario’s world image; has yet to incorporate any creative design and addition of characters.

4

COMBINED MARIO’S WORLD

This is the finalised hand drawing of the combined mario’s world after final revision. Due to the overall length of the combined world; the world has been split into two components on two separate tracing papers (please refer to appendix). Comparative to the first mario’s world, the details has been completed and there has been addition of characters and an underground level.

Question 1: Explain the difference between Pictoral (in this case perspectival) space and Projection? (Maximum 100 words) Perspectival space is a finite world which perception has been confined within; comparatively, projection is an infinite extension that can “simultaneously prolong and collapse distance”. Hence, projection’s concept of extending “the vanishing point to infinity” allows the perception to become infinite and flexible unlike defined perspectival space.

Question 2: Where did Axonometric projection first arise, and why? (Maximum 100 words) Axonometric projection has its earliest systematic record in a military context “to chart the three-dimensional trajectories of artillery projectiles”. Axonometric projection’s use for projectile charting is contributed to its ability to transmit theorised information with measurability and preciseness; it allows the military to express an abstract idea precisely and mathematically.

ILLUSTRATED MARIO’S NEW WORLD

This it the illustratedd mario’s new world, completed via Adobe Illustrator. The lineworks are traced from the combined mario’s world and the colours referenced from the original images. To bring out the form of the world, shades has been used with the light source coming from the left side of the page. The pipe on the right serves as a bridge between the surface and underground world.

APPENDIX

This is the very first attempt for the axonometric drawing of the mario’s world.

This is a display of the medium and equipments used for the completion of this module. Templates has been constructed for the trees,

This is the first attempt in combining the two world together, it is completed mainly by 2H grey lead pencil.

The top photo portrays the ground level and up while the lower photo portrays the underground level of the combined world. The two part was finelined and scanned then overlayed using photoshop to recreate the complete combined mario’s new world.
