Swim to Defeat a Common Enemy

August 25 - 31, 2016

by Carl Oscar Olson

This Saturday, August 27, Swim Across America comes back to Nantucket for the fifth straight year. Starting at 8 am on Jetties Beach, more than three hundred swimmers and volunteers will splash into the Nantucket Sound to raise money to fight a disease affecting each an every one of us: cancer. This year, the fundraiser is on target to put the total dollar amount raised since the event’s return to Nantucket in 2012 at over $1,000,000. All of the funds raised support cancer services on the island for residents and visitors. Swim Across America came into existence in 1987. At that time it was an exclusive relay for Olympic caliber swimmers from Nantucket to Craigville Beach in Hyannis. Since then, the swim has expanded to 16 open water events taking place across the United States. The 25th anniversary was celebrated in 2012, and in commemoration a very special swim took place once again from Nantucket to Hyannis. The timing couldn’t have been better, because Nantucket Cottage Hospital was looking to add a fulltime oncologist to their staff. The fundraiser was a huge success: the hospital had the funding available to expand oncology on the island, and the event became an annual occurrence on Nantucket. continued on page 12

In 1849 three Folger brothers left Nantucket for the gold fields of northern California. By April of 1850 Edward, age 20, Henry, age 16 and James, age 14, had reached the west coast of Panama after a ship voyage, rafting trip and a hike across the tip of the country. They left Panama City onboard the Pacific mail steamer Isthmus. When the brothers reached San Francisco there was only enough money for two to continue on to the mining camps. The youngest, J.A., as he was called, stayed in the city to work for his travel costs so he could join his brothers. Folger met 27-year-old entrepreneur William H. Bovee, who planned to build a mill in San Francisco and hired Folger. Bovee named his business The Pioneer Steam Coffee and Spice Mills. In a new twist for consumers used to roasting and grinding their own coffee beans, Bovee offered ready-to-brew prepackaged coffee. James saved enough money working for Pioneer Steam Coffee and Spice Mills to be able to join his brothers. When he left the city, Folger agreed to act as a Pioneer sales representative to stores catering to the miners. He gave out samples to store owners and relayed their orders to Bovee. James returned to San Francisco in 1865 and became a full partner in The Pioneer Steam Coffee and Spice Mills. In 1872, he bought out his partners and renamed the company J.A. Folger & Co. Eventually James’ brothers Edward and Henry tired of mining for gold. Edward established a San Francisco whaling business next to the Pioneer Steam Coffee and Spice Mill and died at age 40 in Nevada from injuries sustained in a stagecoach accident. continued on page 17

EMILLY BROOKE RUBIN JEWELRY DESIGN

Sundial or Sun d’Isle, as so cleverly named and crafted by Robert A. diCurcio (Bob), was designed as a piece of functional art and commissioned for the Maria Mitchell Association in 1989. The sundial is designed based on the latitude (41 degrees, 15 minutes North) and longitude (70 degrees, 5 minutes West) of Nantucket Island. There is a commonly held misconception that the sun attains its highest point during the day at noon. This assertion is wrong (unless of course you happen to be looking at the time from the direct center of a time-zone). The sundial sitting in front of the Vestal Street Observatory at the Maria Mitchell Association was designed to create an accurate reading using mathematics and astronomy. This sundial is a clock that can read both the date and time using the sun and shadows. Unlike other decorative sundials that may be approximate to the hour, this sundial is exceptionally accurate. Handmade of DuPont Corian and brass, the sundial has a gnomon or a triangular pointer, which is an instrument cut so that the angle makes 41 degrees and 5 minutes above the horizontal. diCurcio designed the sundial this way to make sure that the angle is equal to the latitude of the sundial’s location (Nantucket). The sundial includes both hour-lines and date-lines which were established by the height of the triangular gnomon. The gnomon must also sit parallel to the rotational axis of the earth: the imaginary line passing through both poles and the center of the earth. As the earth rotates on its axis, the sun appears to rotate around the gnomon. continued on page 26

Keeping Time

Sail Endeavor

by Robert P. Barsanti On Friday afternoon, just around quitting time, I stood in a line at Old South Liquors with a dozen cold beverages in my hands. It was a good time to quit; the air was warm, the fog distant, and the winds favorable. The men in this line wore jeans, hats, and hammers on their belts. “How is the summer?” I asked the carpenter. “I’ll let you know next week.” I bought him a P.B.R. and hoped he could get his toes in the water soon. The end of August hangs heavy from the vine. It comes at the end of the party, when the lights come up and the band unplugs. The Opera House boats head to Newport, the Rainbow Fleet goes into cold storage and color print, and Summer Groove has echoed out into the Nantucket Sound. For the visitors, the summer peaks sometime in the middle of the Perseid meteor shower and the Sturgeon Full Moon. Right after the Pops Concert, the tide turns at Steamship Wharf and more cars are on standby waiting to leave than are in Hyannis waiting to come over. The clients and the colleges are calling the Yukons and Defenders home. In the new century, the summer dances to a faster tempo; I remember everything waltzing through the heat and the fog, years ago, but now the days tango by. In my memory, summer brought the families and the college kids on Memorial Day then box-stepped through three months until Labor Day and returned them to the playing fields of Manhattan, New Haven, and Deerfield. These days, summer tours the facility and picks up slack. Peak summer drops in for the weekends until she assumes her position for the first two weeks of August. She calls her tune; the music rises, everyone gets out on the floor and dances. And what a dance! Gigantic yachts line up stern by stern at the wharf, while the moorings fill with the pride of Bermuda and the Cayman Islands. The airport lines up the Lears and G7s in a parade. The lights of Monomoy and Brant Point burn, Sankaty has no tee times available, and boutiques send off customers with $30,000 in frocks and leather pants. The White Elephant

by Corinne Muffly Educator A series of articles dedicated to helping parents find places and activities on Nantucket to enjoy with their children. Downtown on Nantucket you may reflect on how quant and charming it is here. It truly is, but if you are looking for something more tranquil and private, head to the eastern end of the island to Siasconset. Although it is part of Nantucket, this little village does have its own post office and zip code, along with a market and a few delectable restaurants. ‘Sconset is decorated with small fishing cottages and narrow streets. There are lovely shell pathways tucked between beautifully landscaped gardens. The popular Sankaty Head Lighthouse is also located here. ‘Sconset is a cozy little village humbly filled with history. On a peaceful morning, I went for a stroll along ‘Sconset’s bluff. There is a public walking path that begins in the village and leads toward Sankaty Head. It is unobtrusive, in fact, you could easily walk right by it, as I have done. From the market, locate Front Street and follow the shell road left. Then before it bends back onto Broadway, you may notice a dated patch of pavement leading you right. This will direct you to the beginning of the ‘Sconset footpath along the edge of the bluff. This mile walk takes less than an hour, unless you are walking with small children, then it could take days. I recently went with my ten month old son, my sister, and her two children (14 months and three years ). We had to stop and wave to every passing plane, rest in any shaded spots, and continuously encourage my nephew not to pick up the bumble bees dancing in the flowers all along the path. I mentioned the many historical factors of this town and this path is definitely one of them. As deeded by Mr. William Flagg in 1892, this path remains open to the public from sunrise to sunset. Pairings for Your Take-Out Treats by Jenny Benzie Advanced Sommelier + Certified Wine Educator, Proprietress of Épernay Wine & Spirits While you may have your list of ACKtivities to accomplish while on here on island, you also want to make sure you have time to relax. The last thing you want to do is take precious time out of your day to fight the traffic and crowds at the market, much less prepare or cook food, when you could be at the beach. Fortunately, Nantucket has an abundance of fabulous eateries that offer you tasty options without actually having to dine in a restaurant. And what better way to enjoy this take-out food than with the perfect wine pairing! Here are a few quick tips for finding food to nourish your soul and a memorable bottle of wine to warm your heart. When you have a houseful of picky eaters or a larger-than-usual crowd to feed, sandwiches make for a quick and easy option. However, it is rare to find that a group will all agree on the same one. Something Natural solves this issue in that you can create your own piled-high sandwich. Literally, you choose the meat or other filling, cheese (if you so desire) and any additional garnishes. The most important part is you also get to make a selection from their fresh daily baked breads. If you don’t even have the energy for choosing a sandwich, swing over to Sophie T’s for one of their hearty house specialty subs. Or, if you’re in ‘Sconset, Claudette’s is where you stop for sandwiches. A safe bet to pair with a variety of sandwiches is Viña Columna Albariño 2014 from Rías Baixas in the Galicia region of Northwest Spain. Albariño is a traditional white Spanish grape varietal grown in granite and slate soil. and found very little outside of its homeland region. It is typically crisp, dry and racy, very refreshing and it leaves your mouth watering for another sip. The wine is fermented in stainless steel and sees no oak, making it a stellar match for informal fare while dining al fresco at the beach. continued on page 15

the finale from the Winter/Payne album Whales Alive, featuring Payne's poem "The Voyage Home," narrated by Leonard Nimoy. Dr. Payne will tell of his adventures recording whales and about the ongoing challenges whales still face, as well as pollution in the world’s oceans. “In the past, whales were valued as a commercial product on Nantucket,” says Winter. “It will be a privilege to come here now and celebrate the beauty of living whales and their iconic voices in the present day.” As described by Winter and Payne in the Whales Alive album liner notes, “Whale songs, in this short while since they have come into our culture, have touched the hearts of a human audience so large that whale-watching is now a bigger business than whale-killing. We have come to value their living beauty more than their dead bodies. They have helped us mature, and to acquire humility, as our consciousness has grown from “Save the Whales” to “Saved by the Whale.” ‘Whales Alive’ is a celebration of optimism, and our song of gratitude to whales for the beauty and wisdom they have brought into our lives.” Winter’s musical odyssey has long embraced the traditions of the world’s cultures, as well as the wildlife voices of what he refers to as “the greater symphony of the Earth.” From the early days of his college jazz sextet, which toured Latin America for the State Department and performed the first-ever jazz concert at the White House for the Kennedys in 1962, to his later ensemble, the Paul Winter Consort, his concert tours and recording expeditions have taken him to 52 countries and to wilderness areas on six continents, where he has traveled on rafts, dog sleds, mules, kayaks, tug-boats and Land Rovers. Dr. Roger Payne is best known for his studies of whales in the wild. He has led more than 100 expeditions to all oceans and studied every species of large whale in the wild. He pioneered many of the benign research techniques now used throughout the world to study free-swimming whales, and he has trained many of the current leaders in whale research, both in the US and abroad. Admission to this incredible evening is $10 for the performance, with limited $50 tickets available for the performance and a reception immediately following. All tickets are on sale at nha.org/tickets.

Since 2012, The Nantucket Cottage Hospital has expanded much of its oncology services thanks to contributions from the Swim. Much of the money is used to bring oncologists to Nantucket from Boston’s Massachusetts General Hospital and also helps support a full-time oncology nurse. In addition, patients and their families receive supportive survivorship services free of charge through Palliative and Supportive Care of Nantucket, or PASCON. The ultimate goal of Swim Across America on Nantucket is to fully fund the island’s oncology department. The success of the Swim has been growing every year since 2012. This year, the fundraising goal is an ambitious $375,000. The Swim is non-competitive and designed for participants of all ages and skill levels. For the children involved, the day’s events begin with a fifty-yard Kid Splash. There are both half mile and 1-mile races for the rest, with a minimum fundraising target of $200 for each swimmer, and an special “Wavemaker” status for participants who raise $1,000. New this year is a four-mile swim from Eel Point to Jetties on the Thursday before the Swim. An elite lineup of 12 swimmers will each raise $4,000 and work the waves for more than two hours to help defeat cancer. One of the four-mile swimmers will be summer resident Grant Wentworth. Last year in an historic swim, Wentworth swam more than 22 miles from Hyannis to Nantucket to raise over $150,000 for the fundraiser. At press time, slots for this marathon of a swim are still available. Jill Roethke, co-event director of the Swim along with Jim Pignato, puts it best: “There is no better way to display the “can do” Nantucket spirit than this swim. We are blessed with great water, people, and spirit—you just can’t find a better way to celebrate Nantucket than by joining in.” “We all have friends and neighbors that are battling cancer,” says Jim. “This is your chance to do your part to help.” He adds, “There is no better way to give something back to Nantucket then to take the plunge with us”. For details on volunteering, participating, and donating, visit them at swimacrossamerica.org/Nantucket. Late entries are welcome to sign up from 6:45 am to 7:30 am the morning of the event, Saturday, August 27.

offers test drives in BMW convertibles (watch out for the gull wing doors), movie stars can walk invisibly, presidential candidates come to raise money, and the Farmer’s Market sells corn at $1.50 an ear. As the full moon wanes and the meteors fade, the dancers bow, the lights go out, and the road gags on Mercedes and BMW sport utilities. The Party ends and those in the know bow out early; The Big Zip sails, the planes jet off, and the lights on Brant Point wink out. Then, the Island Summer begins. We have the after-party, the Bartender’s Ball, thrown by the band and the bouncers, after the glasses have been washed and most of the chairs have been flipped. Island Summer arrives after its city cousin leaves on a jet plane. Then, you can close the shop for Sundays, let the grass grow for a couple of days, and take a few days off from the jobsite. Like most after-parties, the celebration tops the main event. In late August, the water continues to warm in to the mid- to upper seventies, with the far off swells from the lovely swirling African ladies. The Tuna bar is open 0ME 4PVUI 8IBSG /BOUVDLFU t 888 3&.:$3&"5*0/4 $0. and serving, the stripers are returning from Maine, fat as golfers, and the marlin dance out in the eastern fog. On-island, the corn has finally come in sweet and yellow, the tomatoes hang heavy and crimson, and the Bartlett’s Truck is so full that it drops produce on the cobblestones. The Bartender’s Ball stretches out through the beginning of school, into October and winds down around the Harvest Moon. Islands live and die in perfect time. The Sun and Moon call the tempo, beaten out in tides, currents, and seasons. We freeze in the spring, warm in the summer, luxuriate in the fall, and hide in the winter. Our civilization echoes those same hopeful rhythms. The Summer Olympics and the election complete their four-year cycles, the academic year is about to ring in a New Year, and the Patriots are poised for another season of conquest. All of these patterns buoy the spirit; it will always get better after it gets worse. August will come back, with The Big Zip and the Opera House Cup and the Boston Pops. It’s impossible to believe that this won’t repeat. We can’t believe that this is the best that it will ever be. We can’t think that there might be time when the houses and the Boat Basin and the dinner tables aren’t full. We have to believe that the party will return. We can’t imagine a time when the wind no longer blows warm, the water isn’t friendly, and the corn isn’t sweet. fishermen had used this path along the bluff for years, and Flagg wanted to allow the path to remain accessible to all. Even though the path is public, it does feel a bit like an invasion of privacy this time of year due to its location. The path winds and twists along the bluff, which also happens to be along the edge of land owners’ properties. Once you enter the narrow, single file path, you enter what feels like a series of secret gardens. On the left side of the path you will admire the perfectly manicured and impeccably landscaped properties holding larger than life houses with million dollar views. On the right, the view! Down the steep bluff sits a blanket of sand with the Atlantic Ocean stretching to the horizon. The path is well protected by thick brush and maintained for public use. There are short stretches of tree-covered shade. Many of the homeowners have created a barrier of sorts along the path using landscaping, which is easy on the eyes, while others allow you access to the edge of their lawn. Although tempting to wander closer, even with the smell of bacon in the air as you walk by, respect the residents and leave them with their privacy. A polite wave or nod will suffice as you continue to admire the sites the walk has to offer. Approaching the end of the path, erosion has sadly cut this endeavor short. You are able to backtrack a bit and find the few marked access points leading you to Baxter Road in order to continue on to the Sankaty Head Lighthouse or simply take the path back to the start. This is not a running, biking, or stroller friendly path, but leashed dogs are permitted. Pairings for Take Out Treats

August 25 - 31, 2016

from page 9

For the more adventurous take-out types (as in those who like to add a variety of toppings and not your common bread selection) you should consider a wine that also goes along for the ride. Enter Bellus Falanghina ‘Caldera’ 2014. Falanghina is an ancient white grape indigenous to Campania, Italy, located on the western seaboard near Naples. It is a funky, brave grape that also is not commonly grown outside of its region. The wine has considerable character, yet delicate and almost bohemian, with lively acidity, floral aromas and mineral flavors. Look for this amazing value of a wine that will knock the socks of almost any Pinot Grigio. For those who want to do the seafood route for your take out dinner, Easy Street Cantina serves a fantastic selection of very fresh seafood: clams, lobster rolls, fish tacos, shrimp, scallops, New England clam chowder, fish-nchips, and even a classic fried Fisherman’s Platter. They’re fast and in walking distance to Children’s Beach (where their other restaurant, Childrens Cafe, also serves seafood to-go). One of the most asked questions in the wine store is “What wine pairs best with lobster?” Look no further than a bottle of Chardonnay. “Which Chardonnay?,” is usually the next question. With so many different choices of styles available from this one grape variety, let’s narrow it down to two classic styles. The first being Au Bon Climat Chardonnay, Santa Barbara County 2014. This iconic winery led by legendary winemaker Jim Clendenen is an homage to the wines of Burgundy, France. The wine is a barrel fermented, full bodied Chardonnay with mouth filling citrus fruit and a palate cleansing, bright finish. It will become richer and more complex with age and considered an extreme value. This will be an easy-going, perfect pairing for the texture of the lobster caressed in drawn butter. For a more sophisticated option, Louis Baisinbert Montagny, 1er Cru Vieilles Vignes 2014 will gratify your discerning crowd. The lesser-known region of Montagny in the Côte Chalonnaise of southern Burgundy produces wines made from 100% Chardonnay. This limited-production, highly refined interpretation of Chardonnay has a rich, buttery structure with subtle notes of citrus and floral components. Its beautiful, distinctive signature opaque dark blue bottle ensures that light does not alter the wine. The freshness of this wine makes it an ideal choice for any summer seafood fare. Nantucket’s take-out food scene also offers cuisine with an international flair. Siam to Go is one of the island options for your Thai Cuisine. What makes it even more unique is that it is located at the Nantucket Ice Rink! From traditional noodle dishes to sweeter style rice dishes, spicy curries and Download this free app today! a plethora of appetizers to share, you can stretch across both sides of the spectrum in regards to what is the ultimate wine with your dish. Folgers from page 4

Henry returned to Nantucket and later married Eliza Jane Clark. They settled in New York City and had eight children. Among the three brothers’ children, two Folger sons would acquire great wealth building dynasties that still exist today. In June of 1889, at age 51, JA died of a heart condition. His oldest son, James A. Folger, II, age 26, had worked in the company for seven years and succeeded his father as president of J.A. Folger & Co. James II expanded the company, which sold coffee on both a wholesale and retail basis. In 1901 the company’s ambitious salesman Frank P. Atha further expanded its territory into Texas. Folger’s Coffee remained under family control until 1963, when the Procter & Gamble Company of Cincinnati, OH, acquired it and began to distribute Folger’s Coffee nationally In 1969 James Folger II’s granddaughter, Abigail Folger was murdered by followers of Charles Manson. Folger Coffee changed hands once more in 2008 when the JM Smucker Company purchased it. Henry Clay Folger, Jr., born in 1857, was Henry, Sr and Eliza Jane’s oldest child. His father had not been a successful businessman, so when Henry, Jr. attended Amherst College, he paid his tuition by competing in essay contests and by borrowing the money. While at Amherst, Folger was a Phi Beta Kappa scholar who studied Latin, Greek, French German and English literature. Folger continued on to Columbia Law School.

And after passing the bar exam, he went to work at the Standard Oil Company of New Jersey as a statistical clerk in 1881. His prowess at mathematics and his methodical tracking of the company’s oil production attracted the admiration of his employer. He was chairman of the manufacturing committee by 1899, and became a trusted confidante to John D. Rockefeller. Folger and Rockefeller resisted the anti-trust movement favored by President Theodore Roosevelt. But in 1911 a US Supreme Court ruling broke up the company and Folger became president of the Standard Oil Company of New York. By that time Folger was a wealthy man and a significant shareholder at Standard Oil and its subsidiaries. He retired as president in 1923, but stayed at Standard Oil another five years as the company’s first chairman of the board. Folger and his wife, Emily, a Vassar graduate and Shakespeare scholar, used their great wealth to collect Shakespearean documents and by the time he died Henry had amassed the largest col-

lection of first folio editions of Shakespearean plays. The couple had no children and committed their energy and a considerable amount of money to building their collection. The pair never discussed their holdings publicly and did not give scholars access to it. But privately they struggled with how best to care for their rare books and manuscripts. In the end, the couple built a library intended as a gift to the American people. They looked at sites in the United States and England, they even considered building their library on Nantucket. But finally settled on Washington, D.C. near the close of World War I. It took Henry nine years to purchase a city block worth of row houses between First and Second Streets. Folger immersed himself the library’s design and in 1930 helped lay a cornerstone of what would be the Folger Shakespeare Library. But he died that year after undergoing surgery. Folger left the majority of his wealth in a trust for the library and named Amherst College the trust’s administrator. The library opened in 1932 on April 23, the date believed to be William Shakespeare’s birthday. Today the Folger Shakespeare Library is considered the most important repository of material related to William Shakespeare. It holds more than 275,000 books about the playwright as well as playbills, costumes, furniture and paintings. Holdings also include 82 First Folios, the first edition of the “complete works” of Shakespeare, compiled in 1623 by two of Shakespeare’s actor friends. What is this?

Vol. 46 No. 16 • Our 46th Season! from page 5

The sun crosses the meridian line (the imaginary north-south arc) at different times. The Earth has been divided up into twenty-four time zones (about 15 degrees of longitude each), causing time zones to differ by one hour from the time zone on either side. The U.S. includes four time zones: Eastern, Central, Mountain, and Pacific. Clearly, Nantucket is within the Eastern timezone which is centered about the 75th line of west longitude. Locations east of longitude 75 degrees see the sun cross the meridian earlier than noon, while the locations on the western side of the line will have the sun cross their meridian later. Nantucket is east of the 75th line of longitude by about 5 degrees and it sees the sun cross the meridian line about 20 minutes earlier than those on the west side of the 75th line. Approximately one degree of longitude equals about 4 minutes of clock-time. When sundials were the most accurate and abundant tools to measure time, the terms A.M. and P.M. were created. A.M. means ante-meridian (before the meridian) and P.M. meant post meridian, which was meant to describe the sun’s position in the sky. Now, we use A.M. and P.M. to signify a time before or after noon. diCurcio set up the sundial perfectly level and oriented it so that the meridian-line is exactly north-south using a compass. Once the dial is aligned magnetically, the gnomon is lined up to cast a shadow on the “figure of eights” which shows the time (synched to a correct watch). Installed by diCurcio, the sundial at the Maria Mitchell Association is accurate to this day. Below are the instructions on how to read the Sun d’Isle. We hope you stop by the Maria Mitchell Vestal Street Observatory on Vestal Street to see the 1908 observatory built by the MMA and to test out the Sun d’Isle on the lawn in front. If reading shadows interests you, we encourage you to attend our Summer Speaker Series this Tuesday, August 30, to learn about the “Effects of Light at Night” with Dr. Mario E. Motta. TO READ CLOCK TIME: Read the tip: the point of the triangular shadow. When the tip just touches a “Figure of Eight,” then the sundial indicates clock time ON-THE-HOUR! But: take note of the month! The little figure-of-eight at the bottom tells where to read! And: daylight saving time? If “YES,” use the ROMAN NUMERALS top circle. TO READ THE DATE: Please read the tip: the point of the triangular shadow. When the tip just touches one of the curves running from side-to-side, read the DATE shown at the end of the curve. The MMA was founded in 1902 to preserve the legacy of Maria Mitchell and to promote her belief in learning-by-doing. An astronomer and natural scientist, as well as an educator, Maria Mitchell shot to worldwide fame when she discovered a comet in 1847. For her discovery, she was awarded a gold medal from the King of Denmark – the first American and first woman to receive the honor. She served as the Professor of Astronomy and Mathematics at Vassar College from 1865 until 1888. Today, the MMA operates two observatories, a natural science museum, an aquarium, and the birthplace of Maria Mitchell. The MMA conducts scientific research, leads classes and workshops for people of all ages year-round, and welcomes thousands of visitors to its museums and observatories. Nantucket Lobster Mac parmesan that you can mix in or not. We did and think it adds something special to the dish. We love a good steak, but, let’s face it, it takes a very creative chef to come up with a new way to serve one. We think Chef Herriman does a fine job with the richly flavored truffle miso butter and sauteed wild mushrooms he serves on the Grass Fed Aged New York Strip. This sizeable strip steak is served with roasted fingerlings and pickled beets as well as lightly blanced and grilled asparagus. We tried, but we could not choose a favorite from the last two entrees we tried last week. Both were creatively designed, deliciously executed, and just different enough to satisfy even a jaded palate. One was the Black Cod Loin. The moist white flesh of the fish is cooked through but not overdone and separates temptingly in big flakes. Top and edges are luciously golden with a tasty crisp skin on one side. Chef has the seaGrass Fed Aged New York Strip soning just right, and we love the complimentary flavors of the very colorful sauces: golden beet puree, roasted red beet puree with verjus, and an extraordinary pistachio pesto. The other entree tied for first place is the Butternut Squash Ravioli. Like the Lobster Mac appetizer, this sounds like a dish more appropriate for autumn than August, but after tasting it once, we’d order it again in a heartbeat no matter what the weather. The ravioli are filled with butternut squash, nutmeg, and parmesan for a deeply satisfying, sweet flavor that is sensational with the toasted pine nuts, baby spinach, and the bright acidity of the whole roasted tomatoes served on top. The ravioli is sauteed just before plating, which adds a slight golden crunch before the sauce is poured over. We can only hope this dish remains on the Fall Menu for 29 Fair. Blissfully full, we pondered dessert: Tiramisu, Blueberry Pie, Panna Cotta Duet, and Bread Pudding…and decided to find out if the Tiramisu

was as good as we remembered from Cioppino’s when 29 Fair’s current manager Tracy Root ran that island restaurant and Chef Herriman was in the kitchen there. It was! The layers of marscarpone mousse, espresso soaked lady fingers, cocoa... If you only order one dessert, this is the one you want! The only thing we left on this plate was a dusting of cocoa powder. We’d be remiss if we did not also mention the Blueberry Pie: it’s a final taste of summer, and is a very fine ending to a very fine meal.

Books & Publications On This Day in Nantucket History

by Amy Jenness available at Mitchell’s Book Corner and The Whaling Museum Gift Shop Quirky & fascinating stories that shaped this island

Nantucket is much more than beautiful beaches and sailboats. One day at a time, author Amy Jenness offers up quirky and fascinating stories of the people and events that shaped this remote island. On August 11, 1841, Frederick Douglass made his first antislavery speech at the Nantucket Atheneum. The Great Fire of July 13, 1846, devastated the island, forcing residents to rebuild what they lost. On December 5, 1981, a nor’easter stranded nearly two thousand visitors and forced seventeen pilot whales to come ashore. Read a story a day or month at a time. Celebrate an entire year of Nantucket history. ON THIS DAY IN NANTUCKET HISTORY is available for sale at Mitchell’s Book Corner and the Whaling Museum Gift Shop.
