Happy Birthday, Maria

Join the Maria Mitchell Association as it hosts a celebration of Maria Mitchell’s 205th birthday this Tuesday afternoon, August 1 on Vestal Street. From 1 pm to 4 pm, this free event willl offer astronomy and natural science activities, live animal displays, research demonstrations, face painting, live music by Susan Berman and Ray Saunders, and free admission to the Maria Mitchell Association Vestal Street Museums.

The Maria Mitchell Association is named after America’s first female astronomer, Maria Mitchell, who was born and raised on Nantucket Island. Born to Quaker parents, she was an avid learner. The Quaker tradition taught that both boys and girls should be educated, and Maria received an education at local schools and from her father’s schools and home tutoring. Maria developed her love of astronomy from her father’s instruction on astronomy, mathematics, surveying and navigation. At age 12, Maria helped her father to calculate the position of their home by observing a solar eclipse. By 14, ship captains trusted her to rate their ships’ chronometers for their long whaling journeys. Maria pursued her love of learning as a young woman, becoming the Nantucket Atheneum’s first librarian. She and her father continued to acquire astronomical equipment and conduct observations, working for the US Coast Survey among other entities.

Mitchell is known for discovering a comet in October 1847, while sweeping the skies using a telescope in the rooftop observatory atop the Pacific National Bank on Main Street. She went on to become the first female professor at Vassar College, where she was an inspiration to her students. She believed in learning by doing and in the capacity of women to achieve what their male counterparts could. “Miss Mitchell” was beloved by her students whom she taught until her retirement, due to failing health, in 1888. She died in 1889 and was buried next to her parents in the family plot at Nantucket’s Prospect Hill Cemetery.

The Maria Mitchell Association is a private non-profit organization. Founded in 1902, the MMA works to preserve the legacy of this Nantucket native astronomer, naturalist, librarian, and educator. The Maria Mitchell Association operates two observatories, a natural science museum, an aquarium, a research center, and preserves the historic birthplace of Maria Mitchell. A wide variety of science and history-related programming is offered throughout the year for people of all ages.

When you live on the island for a while, whether year-round or summer, you have your favorite haunts. You only need to look at the line at the Juice Bar or see the full parking lot at Sanford Farm. Sure, those places are great, but there are other ice cream spots and other trails to explore. As a dog-owner, I take my girls, Tiller and Mako, for walks every day. I have my favorite regular spots: some are close to home for easy, quicker walks and some trails are further afield for a weekend or when there’s more time.

Avoiding the Skunk

It was looking very much like one of those days. Three plus hours into our beach charter excursion and nary a hookup. Each of us had at least one fish blow up on our respective fishing lures, but somehow all of the attacking fish had dodged our hooks. The only thing biting were the mosquitoes and green head flies. Alas, our time was up and it looked like we had to take the long ride back from Great Point with a skunk tagging along. That is not my favorite thing, let me tell ya…

The Sickels family took it in stride. Larry Sickels, his wife Sarah and their sons Charlie, age 14, and Oliver, 11, have been on a beach fishing charter with me for each of the past three summers. Larry tried to ease my pain: “We plan to come here every summer and fish with you each time. Sooner or later we were bound to get skunked. So if this is the year that it happens, that’s ok. We’ll get fish on all of our trips to come.”

I was grateful for Larry’s optimism. And yes, for each of the three years that I have been a beach fishing guide, I have had the pleasure of taking the Sickels family out to Great Point for a fun day of surfcasting. Both of our prior trips had been successful. The first year involved some hunting around, but we eventually ran into some bluefish in the area of Great Point that is referred to as the South Lot. Charlie and Oliver were just little guys then, but they put a couple of fish on the beach with the help of their parents.

I loved it—as a new guide, still trying to figure everything out, the Sickels family was a godsend. They just made things fun. I loved seeing how they all interacted with one another. This family clicked along on all cylinders. Larry was outgoing and led the way. Sarah was quiet but also very fun. And strong, in the way that an awesome mother is. Sarah’s family has roots on Nantucket back to 1660, when Christopher Hussey became one of the first ten landowners on the island. Sarah’s dad, Warren Hussey Bouton, wrote six fun children’s books that featured Sarah and her brother as characters having great Nantucket adventures (note: these books are still available at the downtown bookstores). Charlie and Oliver, the two boys, are fantastic. Born three years apart, they have a great big brother-little brother

Guiding On-Island Mental Health Care

Nantucket is considered one of the most idyllic places to summer on the East Coast, but living here year-round has many challenges and can be isolating, especially in the deep winter. This, coupled with the struggle to retain mental health professionals on-island full-time, has resulted in difficulties matching locals to needed mental health resources.

In 2021, the Nantucket Behavioral Health Initiative (NBHI) was formed with members from the Nantucket Cottage Hospital, Fairwinds Center, the Community Foundation for Nantucket, and NAMI. These individuals became the heart of the initiative, and were joined by community leaders from across the island from town government, schools, police, EMS, health and human services organizations, the spiritual community, independent clinicians, and community members. The rapid rate at which the community came together and the wide reach of the organizations that joined shows the mutual understanding of the need present on the island. This group worked together for two years to create a sustainable path to redesign the behavioral healthcare system on the island and to address the system-wide gaps.

They accomplished this through the creation of Community Solutions for Behavioral Health. Think of the non-profit as providing a guide to mental health resources available to Nantucket residents. The organization is not designed to provide patient services, but rather to coordinate mental health options on the island to bring more resources to the people of Nantucket. The organization brings together Nantucket Cottage Hospital, Fairwinds, NAMI, Addiction Solutions, and other essential partners to anchor this organization. Our House and the Nantucket Boys and Girls Club, which do not provide mental health services but help to care for, support, and aid the island community, are also helping with this important initiative.

Community Solutions for Behavioral Health was created as a result of a report commissioned by the NBHI. This report outlined the gaps within mental health services on the island and the steps the island community would take to move forward. Of the 15 gaps identified in the island’s continuum of behavioral healthcare, five were identified as “system enablers”:

~ a lack of person-centered collaboration across the continuum

~ underrepresented access and navigation supports

~ fragmented system oversight with limited data utilization

~ reimbursement levels insufficient for Nantucket’s true cost of service

~ how lack of housing impacts demand, recruitment, & retention of professionals.

The 10 additional gaps within the system ranged from a lack of access to community providers and a fragmented crisis response to under-resourced family and school-based supports. These extensive gaps had a far-reaching effect on the entire community of Nantucket.

The primary goal of Community Solutions for Behavioral Health is to streamline the process of receiving mental health care on-island, ensuring that all the

Respoke, now in its third year at 41 Straight Wharf has been known around the Grey Lady (and internationally) for repurposing iconic designer scarves into oneof-a-kind products, featuring their espadrilles handmade in La Rioja, Spain.

Co-founder and designer Michael Tonello’s inspiration for Respoke was two-fold: his witty bestselling memoir Bringing Home the Birkin ends with him having a closet full of gorgeous designer scarves. At the time, he was living Barcelona, where it’s traditional every spring to buy pairs of espadrilles… “they are cool & comfortable… it’s a two-century tradition. I wanted to be like a native, so I did the same...but the espadrilles never really changed: the same styles, the same colors, the same fabrics...When I realized I had all these scarves I wasn’t wearing, I thought it would be really cool if I could get someone to make me a pair of espadrilles from a scarf.”

And that is where it all began.

The most intriguing part of Respoke’s products is that every single piece is unique because they use different parts of the scarf. The espadrille construction is so special because each part of the shoe is made by hand with love in different mountain village workshops. “These are family owned craftspeople that pass their skillset down generation after generation.” Because they use natural materials and repurposed scarves, all Respoke products are the very best of sustainable luxury.

On the south shore of the island, downwind of the sewer beds, you can rent a house for $25,000 a week. For that money, you get two master bedrooms and two guest bedrooms. Each bedroom has an “en suite” bathroom and a television set. The master bedroom, of course, features a “state of the art” shower. The house is less than a mile downwind from the beach..

Of course, it has a pool.

In the last few years, the Realtors must have been placing pools in their pitch decks to prospective investors. In order to get the maximum return out of your “property investment” you need to install a pool. Then, you can charge $25,000 a week. I see him, in an embroidered belt and baby blue blazer, in front of a glowing architect’s vision, with a pool and landscaping: “As a seasoned Realtor, I can assure you that your real estate portfolio will experience a remarkable boost in its upside potential. With my expertise and strategic approach, we'll supercharge your investment opportunities, unlocking greater profits and growth in the dynamic property market.” The charts draw themselves. As a result, you can find a pool featured on almost every page of the real estate pages. Throughout the island are overwrought “investors” writing check after check for lawn-care and pool-care while their shingled investment vector sits empty.

The Realtors and their investors have done more research on the prospective client base than I have. I would think that, when you rented a house on Nantucket, you would want to get to the beaches. Our island features more than a hundred miles of public beach where anyone can go topless if they wish. Almost everywhere else, you need to get a sticker, get in line, and leave your top firmly tied. Out here, you could go anywhere on a hundred miles of beach, put up a chair, and watch eternity wash in. Compared to the Atlantic, a pool comes in a distant second place. If you don’t want to swim in the ocean, perhaps you could send $25,000 a week to stay in a pool someplace else, like Hanover NH.

In the modern era, the Realtors have a different idea of vacation; they want the visitors to be “alone together.” So, the sewer bed house has TV’s in every bedroom, along with en suite bathrooms, so that none of the guests need to cross paths with the other guests; nobody has to wait for the bathroom or take turns with the remote.

The pool logically extends the “alone together” mindset. When you have a pool, you get to have the Instagram vacation. You can be an influencer at your own pool, make some video, and then lay back in blessed solitude. They can only reach you through your DMs.

However, beaches require a community mindset. You have to lie on your towel with other people who could see, and possibly talk to you. When you sit in your chair, kids at play, book on the lap, beverage in the coozie, you could get tapped on the shoulder by a long lost friend. Your individual bubble would get pierced. You might have to take your ear phones out.

Nantucket has never been a place where you can be alone together. When you go to Fisherman’s Beach, friendly faces are going to find you. The beauty of island living has nothing to do with the sand, the water, or the sky. It has to do with the people that know you here. It’s not a problem, it’s a feature.

First Island Tourists Came for the Sheep

Part 1: Island Land Rush

The Oxford English Dictionary dates the first use of the word tourist only as far back as 1800, but as the dictionary's definition implies, the new word describes an old habit—travelling for pleasure was not new when the word first appeared in print. By the beginning of the 19th century, the elites of English and European society had been touring for two centuries, travelling to the great cities and watering places, and taking the “Grand Tour” of the Continent. Nantucket was an early tourism destination, but not for its sea breezes or cultural offerings: they came for the sheep, or rather, the sheep shearing festival.

“For a century or so an idyllic and pastoral Shearing Feast was kept by the entire population, who, on the first Monday in June, migrated to the ponds near the western end of the island, whither the sheep had previously driven up and penned. Miacomet Plain, with its chain of ponds—one of them still called Washing Pond—then became for three days an encampment of tents and booths, where busy matrons and merry girls cooked such savory dishes as were at that time dear to the island epicure, or set forth those daintier viands prepared at home. The fathers, husbands, brothers, and sweethearts meantime washed the sheep, lightening their labor with a great deal of rough play and many practical jokes among themselves, and returned them to the pens to dry until next day, when the shearing would begin.”

Travelers arrived in an assortment of vehicles, from lowly Nantucket calashes to handsome carriages and loaded omnibuses, to visit the various tents that had been erected near the pond. The 1843 festival featured a new addition to the usual lineup: a spacious tent, 100 feet long by 50 wide and 30 high, erected by the Washington Total Abstinence Society “for the accommodation of the Cold Water Army,” a threehundred-strong troupe of children who marched through the streets of town, accompanied by the Nantucket Brass Band, before heading to the shearing pens.

Exploring a new trail or property can feel like visiting another island. Or, better yet, like learning a new story from an old friend. And with so much open space and publicly accessible trails around Nantucket, we have so many to choose from!

Like many new experiences on Nantucket, the trail I’m going to talk about today I “discovered” a few years ago when I met a friend for a walk. She told me where to park and that there was a small trail entrance nearby. Well, I fell in love with that trail and immediately put it into regular rotation. Sometimes these secret spots are more difficult to find, as the name implies. However, the Nantucket Land Bank has been working over the past year to name and put signage up at many of these spots. A primary part of their mission is providing access to the public. And while I never had a name for the spot myself, I recently learned that the property is called Burchell’s Farm.

Burchell’s Farm consists of around 70 acres and connects to a series of trails with multiple access points. For proximity’s sake, I access from Miacomet Avenue. The trail head is about 0.6 miles from Surfside. There isn’t a parking lot, but there is room for about three cars just off the road on the right-hand side. The property where the trail starts is 81 Miacomet Avenue if you’re using your GPS. Using the ACKtrails app the trail is called “Miacomet Overlook Trail,” with the entrance (and likely better parking) available off of West Miacomet Road just past Miacomet Golf Course.

The entrance off of Miacomet Avenue (my starting point of choice since it’s less than a mile from my house) is marked with a medallion for the Coast-toCoast Trail: a nearly 25-mile trail created by the Nantucket Conservation Foundation that winds through land owned by NCF, Land Bank, Mass Audubon, the town, and the state. There is also a sign noting that it is the property of the Nantucket Land Bank and a public way with no hunting. From this entrance, the single-track trail starts in a pitch pine forest stand. The tall trees provide nice shade for this time of year. The trail is lined with low bush blueberries and black huckleberry plants, ripe right now. It’s nice to be able to have a few berries as a snack while out on a walk.

Being not too far from the main drag of Surfside Road and midisland, it’s surprising how quiet it can be in the forest. When I walked there this weekend, there was plenty of bird chatter, however. Eastern Towhees reminded me to “drink your tea…” among the chatter of other forest birds.

Walking along the wooded trail, as the forest thins and the canopy opens up, you come to Mizzenmast Road, which is basically a driveway at this section. Crossing to continue on the trail, you may notice more medallions for the Coast-toCoast Trail. Parts of this trail matrix at Burchell Farm make up the mid-island portion of the Coast-to-Coast Trail. After crossing Mizzenmast, there will be a small wetland on the left that my dogs love to roll in (oh joy), but which is dry this time of year. Only the telltale cinnamon fern and other wetland plants are indicators that this spot can hold water. After that is where the trail connects to the Mizzenmast Extension trail. Turning left onto the trail, you start to travel south again through pitch pine forest. This part of the trail is slightly higher in elevation and looks down into the Miacomet Valley below. The shade is welcome during these hot summer days.

If you keep straight on this path, it will take you all the way out to Smooth Hummocks and eventually to the ocean. I like to turn left (to make a loop) onto a narrow trail that pitches down from the ridge. At the bottom, the vegetation continued on page 16

changes. The ground is often wet in this spot (not so much now in summer), and I have ended up with very wet feet if not wearing my boots in the winter season. From here is my favorite part of the trail and the best views. An elevated section, almost like a dyke, crosses the top of a feeder section of Miacomet Pond with Burchell’s Pond on the other side. The open vista offers views of Miacomet Pond and low wetland vegetation. Swamp milkweed is in bloom right now as is the swamp rose mallow. A gorgeous, peaceful sight.

After going across the pond, you’re out in the open for a bit. The open field has some naturalized Yucca plants that likely escaped a garden. An interesting feature, but not an invasive plant here. Low shrubs and a cedar grove lead you back into the pitch pine habitat. Eventually the trails reconnect and the loop is complete. There are several intersecting trails. And while getting lost on purpose is sometimes fun, please consult the ACKtrails app or your map of choice before heading out.

So, why Burchell’s Farm? Burchell’s Farm is about 70 acres in total. The primary parcel that makes up the property was purchased in 1988 from Gibby Burchell shortly after the Land Bank’s founding in 1983. Gibby had previously been offered $8 million for the property from a developer, but had, instead, chosen to sell it to the newly formed Land Bank for around $1 million. As he said in an article published in 1990 by James Stolz, “It’s a matter of having vision, and I am tickled to death. If we’d sold all this to developers, we’d be sick for the rest of our lives.” Because of this vision, we can all enjoy the Burchell Farm property. And the flora and fauna of the area is protected for the future.

An adjacent 6-acre parcel, just south of the entrance I described on Miacomet Avenue, was purchased by the Nantucket Land Bank last year from the Austin Family. The property, to be known as “Austin Woods” represents a “beautiful and diverse woodland containing a variety of pine, oak, hickory, and larch trees,” according to the Land Bank announcement of the purchase. The plan is to expand the trail system into this area while protecting the habitat.

organizations that are able to provide care are working together. These resources will be able to provide the care that the community has needed for a long time.

According to Margaretta Andrews of the Community Foundation for Nantucket, Nantucket “has one of the highest needs of mental health services in the Commonwealth but the lowest number of providers per population.” Nantucket has a provider-to-resident ratio of 1:370. To bring the local ratio up to 1:270 (the national average of top-performing counties across the country), 20 to 25 providers would have to be added. The ratio on Dukes County (Martha’s Vineyard) is 1:140; the ratio in Barnstable County is 1:190. The state-wide ratio is 1:150.

Nantucket’s Fairwinds Center has been designated the Community Behavioral Health Center and Crisis Responder for Nantucket by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and they will respond to crisis calls 24/7 for 365 days a year. In addition to addressing crisis calls in the community and in the schools, Fairwinds clinicians provide crisis evaluations in the hospital emergency department and provide consultation for treatment of patients waiting for discharge to on-island outpatient services or transfer to an off-island in-patient facility.

This new model is a unified system of care for mental health crises on-island, whether the patient is in the community or at the hospital and regardless of

their insurance status. The new entity is driven by the conclusion that full-time dedicated resources will accelerate and sustain this work. Jason Bridges, the executive director of Fairwinds, believes that Fairwinds cannot take this all on alone. “There are system-level changes that need to happen and one entity cannot take it on alone we must work together to fill in the system-level gaps.” Patients are receiving better and more appreciative care than was available just a year ago because of the increased resources focused on mental health.

The major lapse in mental health resources on Nantucket can partially be accredited to its position as an island. Living on an island has always brought about challenges that do not occur on the mainland. Cooperation is a necessity of living on the island, when speaking to Jason Bridges he explained just that: “On Nantucket, we have to be innovative in a way that mainland communities do not, so it is essential for us all to work together to solve island-wide challenges.” The community leaders here noticed this from day one at the NBHI: in order to create sustained changes in the community they had to create a coalition and come together in a way only an island community can.

The Community Behavioral Health Entity will revolutionize and streamline the mental health resources on our island; and, hopefully, will add muchneeded year-long support to residents. Avoiding the Skunk

relationship. Yeah, this looked like a perfect family.

Wrong. As much as I dislike having to say this, there were two tiny flaws in the awesomeness that is the Sickels family. At the risk of embarrassing this wonderful crew, it can honestly be stated that both Larry and Charlie are left-handed. There, I said it. Those two guys are definitely southpaws. Reel handles had to be moved from one side to the other in order to accommodate this terrible affliction. Yes, I can hear some of you out there now, protesting loudly that being a lefty is hardly a crime. Oh yeah? Have you ever boxed against a southpaw? I have, on more than one occasion, and I generally got beat like a drum. Dino Almodobar was the first lefty I ever stepped into the ring with, and he thumped me! I have been uncomfortable around those lefties ever since (including my left-handed daughter, Anna). When I taught martial arts, I referred to my left-handed students as ERLs (evil rotten lefties). I always keep my distance.

Ok, let’s not dwell on this relatively slight flaw in the amazing Sickels family. They were a blast in 2021, so when Larry hit me up to go out again with them in 2022, I was very excited. We had a slow start on that afternoon but eventually found our way down to access point #7 at Coatue. The wind had died off and the water was like a mirror. I spotted some birds working to the right of where we were. Charlie and I ventured after them, and our efforts were soon rewarded. We had found a big school of chopper bluefish in the 4 to 6 pound range. Larry, Sarah, and Oliver soon joined us and we caught fish until dark. Charlie also managed to catch a nice striped bass in the middle of the bluefish melee. It was a fun and memorable trip.

But sadly, here we were in 2023, driving back down the outside edge of Great Point with the never subtle smell of skunk permeating the cab of my F-150. The fog that had surrounded us all day had finally started to burn off, and we could see much more clearly than when we first started out. And with that clarity came opportunity. Sarah said, “Perhaps we should stop and pick up that little fish back there. At least we would have caught something.”

Little fish, you say? Where exactly was that little fish, Sarah? “It’s in the wash, right on the water’s edge.” I quickly found the brake pedal, followed immediately

by the reverse gear. And just as Sarah had said, there was a little baitfish flopping on the beach. And another one. And another. There’s only one reason why baitfish would be choosing the beach over the ocean and that would be big fish feeding aggressively. Oh baby, here we go!

I grabbed a fishing rod from the back of my truck and quickly put on a Hellfire 180. I lobbed a cast about 30 feet off of the beach and ka-pow—a mutant sized bluefish gobbled that thing up as soon as it hit the water! I handed the rod to Oliver (yeah, the righthanded kid), and he soon found himself in a battle with a fish that was almost his size. Larry and Charlie grabbed their leftie rigs and soon were hanging on their own giant bluefish. It was absolute madness.

Sarah had her camera going, trying to capture everything that was happening. It was no small task, let me tell you. Her husband and both sons were hooked up to fish. A brown shark came slashing up to the surface as a hooked bluefish jumped out of the water to escape it. A seal cruised by, feeling confident that some sort of free food was about to be served. I tried to keep up with all of the action—assisting young Oliver, unhooking fish, securing the catch for a quick picture, and then getting the fish back into the water to be caught another day.

This frenzy continued for about 20 minutes. A few other fishermen saw the mayhem and pulled up to join in the fun. What a blast that day was: the kind of day that I know that I cherish as a guide and as a fisherman. I know that the Sickels family won’t soon forget it either. We ended up with all four of them catching at least one fish. We returned to my truck, all of us tired from our battles with the giant blues. As we drove back to the gatehouse we couldn’t help but notice that the truck smelled like a beautiful summer day. The skunk was gone! And, in spite of having to hang out with a couple of lefties, I can’t wait for my next opportunity to fish with the Sickels crew.

because it was a long way from the sewer (Nantucket Harbor), but they came for the people. They filled the Atlantic House and the Underhill Cottages to be with each other. They didn’t build houses a half mile from each other, behind trees and hedges. As the years crept by, more people came, more hotels and homes were built, and that community developed. It spawned golf courses, restaurants, tennis courts, and the Casino. In the 1920s and 30s, when Sconset was at one of its peaks, the casino was the center for dances, concerts, tennis, and plays.

In Sconset, you bought in because you wanted to be a part of the community. You walk to get the paper and a muffin, ride bikes for your tennis match, stop for lunch, then head down to the beach. In the evening, you could walk to the Casino for a show. You want to live in a place where everyone knows your name and, if you ask nicely, they will pour you a cocktail.

In our new millennium, the Casino remains in the center. Every summer, since Hector was a pup, the Casino has put on a community theater show under the auspices of “On the Isle.” In the last few years, they produce demanding, but fun plays like The Pirates of Penzance, Hair, Trip to Bountiful, and Titanic. The cast includes Nantucket students, summer residents, a professional or two, and some people who are just “mad” for the stage.

On a Saturday morning, the tennis ball barrage continued un-interrupted outside, the surf was up, the humidity was building, and someone had a pool: a hundred things pulled the individuals away. But in the center of bicycles, and visitors, and tennis, the community actors filled a hundred-year-old space. On July 27, they will invite a larger community in.

I don’t believe people come back to Nantucket, year after year, because of the personal T.V.’s, the en suite bathrooms, or the swimming pool. I also don’t think they come back just for the beaches, the stars, or the roses climbing up the walls. I think they come back for the community. People remember a kind word at breakfast, a helpful taxi driver, and a fun play. They come out here, see the people who don’t have to leave right away, and think that they want to hang with them. The Cisco Brewers bartenders have sold more real estate than any broker. We have a community of people who find lost dogs, surf in the sunset, and tread the boards. Who wouldn’t want to join that?

First Island Tourists

“When the shearing was over, and the encampment broke up, the lads and lasses finished out the holiday with a surreptitious dance in town—for these were the days of Quaker supremacy, when dancing, music, cards, and most modes of amusement were strictly forbidden. But like most efforts to suppress human nature, these laws were only fully honored by those who had no longer the temptation to break them; and the young Quakers danced, sang, and frolicked in their generation very much as their too-liberal descendants do today.”

The 1840s also saw the first signs of a new kind of visitor to the island who had reasons to visit Nantucket other than sheep. During the early 19th century, the “fashionable tour” was a string of attractions that brought newly-prosperous bourgeois travelers from New York City up the Hudson River and eventually to Niagara Falls. Faster transportation, more luxurious lodgings, and above all, a new awareness of the tourist as a consumer were what distinguished the fashionable tour from what came before it. And while the earlier Grand Tour of Europe featured itineraries designed to allow as much time as possible in major towns and cities, moving with the greatest possible speed through rural areas, a very different kind of tourism, as detailed in Inventing New England: Regional Tourism in the Nineteeth Century, was developing in America.

It’s almost impossible to separate the growth of tourism in the USA from the commercial and industrial development overtaking the northeastern states during the 19th century. It is no accident that the first tourism-based industry sprang up along this northern route. In the first place, the fashionable tour owed its existence to a series of novel transportation systems—steamboats, for example—which existed nowhere else in the United States at the time and provided the means to reach new tourist attractions. These were also attractions in themselves as indicators of progress.

Remarkable though it was, technological innovation was not the only driving force behind the tourism industry’s rapid expansion in the 1820s. Even more marked were changes in the organization of businesses to fit new markets. All along the new route hotels, built on speculation, were not erected in the centers of villages or on turnpikes, but near the new tourist attractions. Such hotels often offered an expe-

rience that further distinguished them from the village taverns and roadside inns. The word “hotel” signified that the landlord was offering a new style of privacy and luxury that had recently become popular in larger cities.

At this time, tourists in search of nostalgic experiences increasingly imagined their destination in regional terms as New England, rather than “the seaside,” for example. And in a search for that “new” old New England, tourists were looking for an imagined experience of the past: virtuous simplicity, rural independence, and class harmony.

It was part of the fascination some Americans were developing in these years for hand-crafted works and “primitive cultures”; for the history and artifacts of the “colonial” period in American history; and for the “old days” vaguely associated with pre-industrial farm and village life. Those with the taste for the exotically quaint discovered Nantucket.

Far from being a pristine New England village with ties to the colonial past, Nantucket at this time was a commercial town in decline. In the midst of a newfound enthusiasm for New England rural and agricultural life, Nantucket presented an almost entirely entrepreneurial and even urban history. Nantucket natives were neither rustic nor naive. On the contrary, they had always enjoyed a reputation for being widely traveled, urbane, and shrewd. Instead of a communal and harmonious past, Nantucket presented an unusually fragmented and disorderly one. Racial and class tensions abounded, and traditional loyalties were weak or nonexistent. The island had been settled by Quakers, but they had lost their predominance in the freewheeling days of the early 19th century. Neutral in everything but the pursuit of profit, Nantucket boasted none of the Revolutionary War heroes who were becoming such an important part of the imagined New England past.

Nantucket had one asset quite unlike anything at bustling vacation destinations like the new cottage city at Oak Bluffs on Martha’s Vineyard: the “dust of centuries” seemed to be settling on the island. Its quiet and solitude seemed lifetimes away from the bustling, crowded wharves of Oak Bluffs. Only a few years earlier, tourists had shunned such backwaters, but now travelers were developing a taste for them, finding something attractive in the “gray old wharves of ... many another quaint by-

What Nantucket had, in spades, was a built environment that exuded charm even as it provided housing for a peak population of nearly 10,000 people residing almost entirely within the confines of Nantucket historic core. Of course, that population peak occurred in the 1830s and 1840s, at the height of the whaling boom, and bottomed out at about 3,500 in 1880, but “when the last whaling ship left Nantucket in 1869, visitors were already remarking on the town’s rotting wharves and empty streets.” Sensing a business opportunity, in a pattern typical of the period, during the 1870s a handful of residents and former residents of Nantucket invested heavily in the island’s development as a resort. The first speculative ventures were close to existing population centers—Cliff Road in town and Sunset Heights in ‘Sconset—but developers soon realized that there was under-utilized land on the island where it would be possible to emulate the “cottage cities” being built on the Vineyard and elsewhere, with a luxury hotel for short-term visitors and a railroad built to run between the resort center and the old town.

Until the 1860s and early 1870s, large stretches of barren land and shore were held in common, simply because nobody has wanted them. In the 1870s, investors found a use for this land: barren seashore had become beachfront property, prime locations for the latest vacation destination. Small shares in the commons were bought out and consolidated, and large tracts of land fell into private hands. Many of the developers were Nantucketers who could rely on their extensive off-island networks of friends, relatives, and business associates for investors.

Plans were drawn up for sites across the island, from Madaket to Coatue and Quaise, without much to show for it on the ground. There’s an example of one failed speculative subdivision included in the Nantucket Historical Association’s exibit in the Hadwen House at 96 Main Street. Worcester architect Stephen D. Tourtellot envisioned a 1,000-acre “City of the Sea” at Madaket, Great Neck, and Smith’s Point, with a plan that “filled every inch of the tract with parkland, house lots, and avenues that wind around and over waterways, including Hither, Narrow, and Further Creeks (much of the land is now underwater).” But the disastrous Panic of 1873, during which many banks and businesses failed, triggered an economic depression and brought to an end Tourtellot’s vision of a “City of the Sea.”

Later real estate development flurries of the last half of the 1880s were mostly expansions of areas that had proven viable, including the Cliff area, ‘Sconset, and Monomoy. Accessibility was the biggest problem at the time, and the projects that

waitstaff made us feel. This café runs smoothly with fast, attentive service (thank you to experienced and efficient manager Liliana Dougan)—this is one island eatery where there’s usually not a long wait (on the rare occasion there is: a stroll along the beach is just steps away).

Gyp~Sea Café at Children’s Beach is operated by Abby Shaw and Stacey McEachern, the same successful duo who brought The Surf to Surfside Beach. New this season is covered seating on a beautiful garden patio surrounded by plantings and flowers. Now guests can be seated for breakfast or lunch at a table with harbor views just steps from the sand and be sheltered from the heat.

There is still some seating on the front porch overlooking the playground, giving parents the opportunity to sip coffee and enjoy a meal while they keep an eye on their children’s play. And, of course, there’s the spacious grassy lawn of the park at Children’s Beach, where you can perch at a picnic table or spread a blanket and dine on some of the best take-out the island has to offer!

This season it has been difficult to find a restaurant serving breakfast in the heart of town. Gyp~Sea serves a full breakfast menu starting at 7:30 every morning, offering seasonal Bowls, made-to-order Avocado Toast, Eggs and Omelets, Breakfast Sandwiches, and classic favorites like Belgian Waffles, Buttermilk Pancakes, and French Toast.

Starting at 11 am, the lunch menu takes over, with a tantalizing selection of hearty salads and sizeable sandwiches served with some of the tastiest fries we’ve had so far this year.

We arrived at Gyp~Sea one recent morning just on the cusp of lunch service (the menus overlap on Saturdays and Sundays), so we got to taste dishes from both. With temps already in the high 70s and climbing, it promised to be another scorcher. We were pleasantly surprised at how cool and peaceful we felt sitting around a table on their lush garden patio, watching sunshine dance across the water through the shimmer of heat coming off the beach. Our second surprise of the day was how welcome their friendly and well-trained

Table service is offered at Gyp~Sea, but guests place their orders in the main building. While they do sell grab-and-go items designed to take with you to the beach or the boat or even to your job site, you’ll find it hard to resist ordering from the dozens of choices made to order by their chef. Nearly everything on the breakfast and the lunch menus is prepared fresh daily on-site.

Once we placed our orders, we returned to our table with delightfully refreshing and not overly sweet housemade Watermelon Lemonade and freshly brewed Iced Tea as we waited for the food to arrive. Since it was brunch time, we ordered breakfast and lunch dishes. First to arrive was an Acai Bowl, with freshly sliced banana, strawberries, and plump blueberries surrounding Chef Conrod Davis’ crunchy granola sprinkled with coconut flakes and drizzled with honey. Upon dipping our spoons deeper, we discovered the acai underneath was frozen, like a deeply flavored sorbet. This is a true breakfast treat and a healthy one!

Each one of us was impressed at how fluffy Chef Davis makes his eggs. In both his Classic Egg & Cheese Breakfast Sandwich and his Avocado Fresh Herb Omelette, the light texture and full flavor of the eggs are a real standout. choose) is served in the middle of a lightly toasted English muffin. It’s perfectly portable if you need a meal on the go. If you have time to sit, though, order the omelette. For this dish, the chef folds his marvelously fluffy eggs over creamy slices of avocado, diced fresh tomato, basil pesto, and crumbled feta to create a sophisticated summery way to break your fast. And be sure to order a side of Gyp~Sea’s Home Fries Medley alongside. White potatoes and sweet potatoes are sauteed with onion till they’re creamy on the inside and crisp on the outside, then diced red and orange bell pepper are tossed in till they are tender-crisp.

One in our party can never pass up a burrito (must be the Texas influence), and she pronounced Gyp~Sea’s Breakfast Burrito to be sensational. She was right—there’s utter deliciousness stuffed into the flour tortilla: scrambled egg, smoky chorizo, peppers, onions, potatoes, cheddar, and guacamole. Sour cream, plain and spicy, are served alongside if you want to add a little tang.

Speaking of Texas, Gyp~Sea’s Classic French Toast is Texassized, with thick slices of cinnamon bread dipped in an egg batter spiked with vanilla and cinnamon. Chef Davis grills the bread to a delectable golden brown and adorns the slices with fresh strawberries and bananas and a dusting of powdered sugar. You don’t even need syrup (but if you don’t eat French Toast without it, true maple syrup is available).

The four salads served on the patio at Gyp~Sea Café are freshly made, full of flavor, and very filling. We love their splendidly summery Sunburst Salad, with a pile of romaine tossed with candied pecans and topped with ripe strawberries and feta cheese. For something heartier, try their Crunchy Asian Salad. This colorful layered delight starts with tender romaine, then a crisp layer of shredded green and purple cabbage, finished with a top layer

of red and yellow peppers, julienne carrot, red onion, and cilantro, tied together with a brightly flavored ginger dressing. You can enjoy the salads as prepared or add on avocado, chicken, shrimp, bacon, burger or impossible burger.

Speaking of burgers, their Surf Burger (made famous at their Surfside Beach location) is thick and juicy with a delicious char. American cheese melts luciously overtop. It’s served on a toasted brioche bun and piled high with crisp lettuce, a slice of ripe tomato, thinly-sliced kosher dills, and red onion.

Once tomato season is here (and it’s here), one of our favorite lunch treats is a good B.L.T.—Gyp~Sea has a very well done version of this classic, with smoky Applewood bacon, fresh tomato, and a schmear of pesto mayo that adds an extra zing of flavor.

When properly prepared, falafel is moist and nutty mix of chickpeas, garlic, and spices surrounded by a crunchy, dark brown crust. Gyp~Sea Café serves an outstanding version in a spinach wrap. Chef Davis uses buttery green chickpeas to make the star of their Falafel Wrap, which he pairs with crisp cucumber, red onion, tomato, feta, and housemade tzatziki. The final step is to grill the wrap before slicing it to serve.

All the sandwiches served at Gyp~Sea come with very tasty Fries... hot, crisp, and not greasy, these fries are addictive! Even better, you can order them as Truffle Fries or as Rosemary Parmesan Fries, which is our favorite add-on version.

Portions at Gyp~Sea are generous, and prices won’t break the bank (our third pleasant surprise of the morning!). This café is open seasonally (through September), so don’t delay: you’ll want to come back more than once (as we did), and taste something from every category. Every choice here is a good one... and you get a side of harbor views and ocean breezes free with every meal.

were successful—at least for awhile—were at Wauwinet and Surfside, which enjoyed regular service by yacht or by train.

In the summer of 1873, the Nantucket Surfside Land Company held an on-site meeting for potential investors in a “gigantic development extending three miles along the south shore between Miacomet and Madequecham ponds”; in attendance at that meeting, along with several off-island businessmen, were the brothers Charles G. and Henry Coffin, heirs to a vast whaling fortune, who owned the land in question. Lots were surveyed and advertisements placed in mainland newspapers. Now all they needed were customers.

Unfortunately for the initial investors, for the better part of a decade the lots remained unsold, in part due to the remote location far from town. The arrival of the railroad, the brainchild of Philip Folger, a Boston resident with Nantucket ties, improved the situation somewhat. The railroad depot doubled as the real estate office of the Surfside Land Company. While the initial capital for the railroad had been raised through Folger’s Boston connections, control of the company remained a family affair: the general manager was Henry Coffin’s son, Charles F. Coffin. For several years the depot was the only building in the area, apart from the Life-Saving Station, but in 1883 the company arranged to have a building brought from Rhode Island to be reconstituted on-island as the Surfside Hotel. Originally planned for a location closer to town, the railroad line was extended closer to the shoreline for a new location closer to Nobadeer.

For a few years, the new Surfside colony thrived, with band concerts, clam bakes, and fireworks galore, capped by a visit from then President Chester A. Arthur, but by the end of the 1880s the number of visitors was declining, despite the addition of a bowling alley and boardwalk leading to the Life-Saving Station to provide more amenities for the guests. The planned cottage city was not thriving—lots were being given away with proof of intent to actually construct a cottage. The hotel ownership changed hands several times, and in the fall of 1891 a storm leveled the Surfside depot. Another gale two years later demolished large sections of track along the south shore, stranding half the railroad’s rolling stock in ‘Sconset. The railroad was sold in 1894, and the southern route was abandoned when a new company took over continued on page 29

the line. The Surfside Hotel was left to the elements, and by the end of the decade had deteriorated to the point where half the building collapsed during the winter of 1899.

This sort of speculative disaster was not unique to Nantucket. Resort-development ventures had high failure rates everywhere during the 1870s and 1880s, but Nantucket’s failures occurred just at the point when tourists were flocking to the island in larger numbers each year. It was not simply that the efforts of investors were failures—they misjudged Nantucket’s developing clientele, who seem to have been interested neither in the “crowded haunts” of elite watering places nor the gregarious closeness of a cottage city. Those sailing past Oak Bluffs to Nantucket preferred the privacy of boarding at a small hotel or with a family. An 1882 guidebook listed nine hotels and more than than twenty boarding houses on-island. And visitors did build their own summer houses, not in the planned developments, but on individual lots overlooking the harbor near town, and in ‘Sconset, where fishing shacks were refurbished as vacation homes.

These tourists were looking for a special kind of resort experience on Nantucket. Accounts of visits to Nantucket indicate that tourists were as intrigued by the quaintness and romance of Nantucket’s history as they were by its cool breezes and surf. Indeed, even if they were not initially intrigued by history and quaintness, they might soon be driven to take an interest from sheer boredom.

Few sought out the island for its modern conveniences or fashionable social life. At the very moment when Nantucket’s promoters were straining to provide the typical resort entertainments and luxuries for their visitors, those visitors were looking for something quite different. Novelist Edward Bellamy visited Nantucket one summer in the 1870s—his doctor had ordered him to spend some time on the island precisely because it was an “out-of-the-way, switched-off sort of place,” or as the overworked journalist characterized it, a “a ridiculous little dead-alive down-east sandbank.”

40th Pole: Great for families and young children, but no lifeguards. On Nantucket Sound; warm water during July, August and September inspired nickname “The Bathtub” for area nearby. Parking. Best access via 4WD vehicle.

Dionis: 3 miles from town by bike on the north side of Eel Point Rd off Madaket Road. Look for the boulder marked “Dionis.” Sheltered by dunes, calm waters for swimming, safe for children; restrooms, & parking. Beachgoers can take NRTA shuttle bus to Eel Point Rd stop & walk.

Steps: Between Dionis and Jetties beaches; access from Cliff Road. No lifeguard, no facilities, very little parking. Gentle surf; sandbar. Many steep steps must be descended to get to the beach.

Jetties: Easy bike ride from town, or take the shuttle bus. Great beach for families. Lifeguards, changing rooms, playground, volleyball nets, restrooms, showers, public phones, restaurant and take-out food service. Concession and restrooms handicap accessible; boardwalk to the beach. Tennis. Windsurfing, sailboat, and kayak rentals. Shuttle service from town to Jetties Beach is available seasonally.

Brant Point: Easy walk or bike ride from town. No lifeguard. Strong current; experienced swimmers; beach drops off suddenly under the water. Scenic beach with Brant Point Lighthouse; nice to sit and watch the boats rounding the point. Here is where to go to wave goodbye to friends and family departing on the Steamship.

Children’s: Harbor Beach, an easy walk from town down So. Beach Street and off Harbor View Way. Flotation devices are not permitted within the guarded area. Ideal for small children; park, playground, and bandstand; lifeguard, restrooms, showers, food service, picnic tables. Food, playground, and rest room are all accessible. Activities sponsored by Park & Recreation Commission are often held at this beach during the summer.

Francis Street: Five-minute walk from Main Street. Calm harbor waters for swimming; no lifeguard. Jungle gym, kayak rentals, bathroom.

SOUTH SHORE - OCEAN BEACHES

Cisco Beach: Four-mile bike ride to end of Hummock Pond Road. Heavy surf; lifeguard. No facilities. Parking. Rip currents can be strong.

Ladies Beach: To access, turn left at the end of Bartlett Farm Road. No facilities; no lifeguard. Limited parking. Rip current can be strong; heavy surf.

Miacomet Beach: at the end of Miacomet Road. Some parking. Surf and rip currents can be strong on the ocean side. No facilities or food service. This beach is near Miacomet Pond, but the pond is currently closed due to harmful algae.

South Shore Beach: at the end of South Shore Rd. Limited parking; difficult to access beach, 4WD is advisable. No lifeguard; no facilities.

Surfside: Located at the end of Surfside Road, a three-mile ride on paved bike path or take the shuttles. Easy to park. Plenty of surf, wide beach is good for picnics, beach games, and surfcasting. Kite flying west of Surfside Beach is acceptable; for safety reasons, please do not fly kites east of Surfside toward the airport. Due to the number of people who frequent Surfside Beach during the day, it is inadvisable to fly kites during the peak beachgoing hours. Lifeguard, restrooms, showers, public phones, food service. Shuttle service from town to Surfside Beach is available seasonally.

Fisherman’s Beach: Located between Surfside Beach and Nobadeer. No parking; Beach access via steep wooden steps. Plenty of surf, wide beach is good for picnics, beach games, and surfcasting. No lifeguard; no facilities.

Nobadeer: Located near the airport. Limited parking; difficult to access beach. Plenty of surf, wide beach is good for picnics, beach games, and surfcasting. No lifeguard; no facilities.

Madequecham: Land Bank property at the end of Madequecham Valley Road; rough sand road. Parking. No facilities; no lifeguards. Rip current can be strong; heavy surf.

Tom Nevers (“Pebble Beach“): Surf can be heavy; very coarse sand. No lifeguard; no facilities. Good for fishing. Strong rip currents; heavy surf. Access to the beach can be difficult.

WESTERN SHORE - OCEAN BEACHES

Madaket: As far west as you can go, six-mile bike ride on scenic, paved bike path, or take the shuttle bus. Heavy surf, lifeguard, restrooms. Famous for its incredible sunsets.

EASTERN SHORE - OCEAN BEACHES

Siasconset: Regular shuttle bus service or seven-mile ride on paved bike path. Surf can be heavy; lifeguard. Food available in nearby village of ’Sconset. Low Beach: 4WD access. Surf can be heavy; no lifeguard.

BAY & POND BEACHES

Miacomet Pond: This fresh water pond is currently closed due to harmful algae. Pocomo Beach: Great for kayaking and to learn to windsurf. Just west of the Head of the Harbor. Good for children. No lifeguards, no facilities.

Eel Point: Good for fishing and watching the sunset. No lifeguard; no facilities. Limited parking. Rip currents can be strong.

Coskata-Coatue and Great Point: at the end of Wauwinet Road, past The Wauwinet Inn. Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge managed by Trustees of Reservations; beach sticker required for vehicles from Trustees of Reservations. Great for fishing and for seeing Great Point Lighthouse up close. Rolling dunes, bayberry, beach plum, heather, and beach grass. Salt marsh and maritime shrubland. The largest red cedar savanna and woodland in New England. Gray and harbor seals. Public restrooms available at the lighthouse Memorial Day-Columbus Day. Sections of the refuge are sometimes closed to protect nesting shorebirds. Dogs permitted only from Sept. 16 thru March 31 and must be leashed at all times. BEACH SAFETY

•Learn to swim. If you can’t swim an overhead stroke for at least 15 minutes you should not be in the ocean. •Never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy, and swim near a lifeguard whenever possible. •Stay out of the “surf zone” where the waves break at the shoreline. Waves are at their greatest force here, and even a small wave can lift you up and throw you headfirst into the sand. •Never run from the beach into the water and dive headfirst into the waves. Sandbars that cannot be seen from the surface may be present and/or the water may be too shallow.

•Don’t jump or dive into the water from a pier or rock jetty. From a pier or jetty, water appears much deeper than it really is. What looks like 10 or 20 feet of water may only be 2 to 3 feet deep. Diving in could be fatal. The same applies for jumping headfirst into the ocean or a wave from a surfboard – don’t do it! It’s not a risk worth taking. •If you are body surfing or boogie boarding, always keep your arms out in front of you to protect your head and neck. •A rip current will pull you away from the shore, but it will not pull you under. If you’re caught in a rip current, do not swim toward the shore! Instead, swim parallel to the shore, until you’re out of the rip current. Then, swim in to shore. •Never drink alcohol or use drugs at the beach. It clouds your ability to make wise decisions, and that could be fatal! •Take direction from lifeguards at all times.

The greater coastscape, which includes the federally owned Great Point Lighthouse and Nantucket Conservation Foundation land, is a double-fingered peninsula jutting northward between the Atlantic Ocean and Nantucket Sounds is so much more: a blend of sandy beach, rolling dunes, and forest uplands both rugged and serene. The refuge provides multiple habitats for an array of coastal plant and animal species, including heather and beach plum, a maritime oak forest & savannah of red cedar – the largest of its kind in New England – which offer shelter to deer. At the beachfront, watch for horseshoe crabs advancing in extremely slow motion, seals basking in the sun, and shorebirds skittering above the surf line. Make sure you don’t miss the fishing while you’re here on Nantucket! The HERBERT T sport fishing boat will take you to where the blues are biting. Captain Fred Tonkin is an experienced fisherman and will provide you with all the equipment for up to six people to fish at one time. He takes four 2-1/2-hour trips a day: 7 am, 10 am, 1 pm and 4 pm, and the fishing starts just 15 minutes from the dock. 1,3, & 7-day passes may be purchased aboard all buses, long term passes are available at the NRTA office. Passes provide unlimited rides for the duration of the pass.

Downtown Bus Stops: Madaket and Jetties – Broad Street (in front of the Whaling Museum); Mid-Island, Miacomet, Sconset via Old South Rd and Milestone Road – Washington Street, Greenhound Site; Airport, Surfside and Sconset via Polpis Road – Washington Street.

Designated stops are conveniently located along the routes-look for grey posts with blue stripes. All buses carry 2 bikes and are handicap accessible. Riders Guides are available at NRTA Office 20R South Water St, Visitor Services 25 Federal Street, Chamber of Commerce 0 Main St., the Greenhound Building at the downtown bus stop on Washington Street, on all buses and at downtown stops.
