Both the Nantucket Historical Association and Egan Maritime Association open their 2023 featured exhibits on Memorial Day Weekend.

In the Nantucket Whaling Museum, downtown at 13 Broad Street, visitors can view more than 200 artifacts from the NHA’s collection in Summer on Nantucket: A History of the Island Resort. This new exhibit tells the story of Nantucket as a summer destination, from the opening of the first tourist hotels in the 1840s to the multi-billion dollar real estate, construction, and rental economy of today.

Hope Springs Eternal

The first Nantucket striped bass of the year is a very sought-after fish. That first striper signifies that it’s time to get your gear out and get ready for the onslaught of fish that follow. The first bass clearly says that the seasons have changed. The long winter wait is over, better times are coming. Yeah, that first striped bass is an important fish.

So who’s going to catch that first bass? The vast majority of Nantucket beach fishermen sit in their nice warm living rooms on their comfy couches, checking Facebook to see if it’s happened yet. I certainly can fall into that category. Early spring fishing conditions can be tough. The air is cold, the water is colder and the hockey playoffs are on (oh man, what happened to our Bruins? Ouch!). It’s easy to not get up and go out in search of the first Nantucket fish.

The Nantucket striper fishermen pay attention to a couple of early signs to know when it’s time to dig out their fishing gear. On the Water magazine sends out email blasts with a “striper map.” This color-coded map shows the progress of the striped bass as they migrate upward from the Chesapeake Bay tributaries, their spawning ground. A lime green line indicates the northward progress of the schoolie bass, the smaller fish that tend to lead the migratory progress. As soon as that line gets up in the vicinity of Rhode Island, we fishing types set our radars on the fishing reports out of Larry’s Tackle Shop in Martha’s Vineyard. Larry’s runs a contest for the first beach striper caught on that other island. This year, that fish was caught on April 15th.

Nantucket’s first fish is generally caught about two weeks later. This year, it took until May 3 for that first fish to hit the sand. And it’s an epic story! This story has a hero, someone who transcends adversity and refuses to quit. There’s an evil villain, a name that causes even the heartiest of souls to shiver. There’s a love interest. There’s a wise wizard who helps our hero remain steadfast and keep fighting. Think about it: this could be the tale of Rocky, Apollo Creed, Adrien

Lessons of Nantucket

The neighbors have arrived. They brought their dogs.

The Golden Retrievers came racing in from both sides, clashed in our yard, and then went dashing after each other in a joyful chase for suburban dominance. Their owners slid the sliding glass doors shut.

We all like dogs, and we know how they can behave. It doesn’t surprise me, or anyone in my house, that the dogs like to run around and have found lots of good things to smell and eat in our backyard. We have been dumping clam shells and rotted scallops behind the wall for months. If their dogs want them, they can have at them.

The neighbors have put spotlights on their house with motion detectors. Then they draw the curtains and turn on the air-conditioners. So if the marauders and vandals come in the evening, they can have light for their tools and their owners won’t hear a thing. The lights react particularly well to fog. They switch on and off all night. With an audible click.

Usually this will go on for about two weeks. The neighbors will leave their garbage for the seagulls to pick through, will host parties with Rihanna into the small hours, and will come

Nantucket’s Rare Sandplain Grasslands

Driving around the south of the island, you may be headed to the beach or just going on a traditional Nantucket “rantum scoot.” Most dirt roads headed to the shore take you past open landscapes of waving grasses, low shrubs, and wildflowers when the season is right. Head of the Plains, Smooth Hummocks, Cisco— these are sandplain grasslands and coastal heathlands. On Nantucket, we’re pretty lucky: the sandplain grasslands here are some of the largest remaining intact grasslands of their kind in the world.

Because of their unique nature and special status, island conservation organizations have been working hard to protect, manage, and expand these habitats where possible. To enhance these efforts, in 2016 the Sandplain Grassland Network was formed. This network brings together grassland managers, researchers, and practitioners throughout the sandplain grassland distribution range. Massachusetts boasts the largest amount of remaining Sandplain Grassland habitat, primarily found on Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard. However, small pockets exist on Cape Cod, in southern Maine, coastal Connecticut, and Long Island. The network shares knowledge of sandplain grassland management, focusing on lessons learned and on problems encountered. The result of this work is a new paper recently published in the Journal of Restoration Ecology summarizing the status of this globally rare sandplain grassland habitat throughout its range.

Sandplain Grasslands of the northeastern U.S. are iconic hotspots for biodiversity and important conservation priorities because of their relative rarity, limited geographical range, and the diversity of uncommon plant and animal species that they support. Numerous state- and federally-listed plant species occur in sandplain habitats. The habitat also supports listed grassland-specialist birds and lepidoptera (moths and butterflies). NANTUCKET ISLAND BEACHES

NORTH SHORE AND HARBOR BEACHES

40th Pole: Great for families and young children, but no lifeguards. On Nantucket Sound; warm water during July, August and September inspired nickname “The Bathtub” for area nearby. Parking. Best access via 4WD vehicle.

Dionis: 3 miles from town by bike on the north side of Eel Point Rd off Madaket Road. Look for the boulder marked “Dionis.” Sheltered by dunes, calm waters for swimming, safe for children; restrooms, & parking. Beachgoers can take NRTA shuttle bus to Eel Point Rd stop & walk.

Steps: Between Dionis and Jetties beaches; access from Cliff Road. No lifeguard, no facilities, very little parking. Gentle surf; sandbar. Many steep steps must be descended to get to the beach.

Jetties: Easy bike ride from town, or take the shuttle bus. Great beach for families. Lifeguards, changing rooms, playground, volleyball nets, restrooms, showers, public phones, restaurant and take-out food service. Concession and restrooms handicap accessible; boardwalk to the beach. Tennis. Windsurfing, sailboat, and kayak rentals. Shuttle service from town to Jetties Beach is available seasonally.

Brant Point: Easy walk or bike ride from town. No lifeguard. Strong current; experienced swimmers; beach drops off suddenly under the water. Scenic beach with Brant Point Lighthouse; nice to sit and watch the boats rounding the point. Here is where to go to wave goodbye to friends and family departing on the Steamship.

Children’s: Harbor Beach, an easy walk from town down So. Beach Street and off Harbor View Way. Flotation devices are not permitted within the guarded area. Ideal for small children; park, playground, and bandstand; lifeguard, restrooms, showers, food service, picnic tables. Food, playground, and rest room are all accessible. Activities sponsored by Park & Recreation Commission are often held at this beach during the summer.

Francis Street: Five-minute walk from Main Street. Calm harbor waters for swimming; no lifeguard. Jungle gym, kayak rentals, bathroom.

SOUTH SHORE - OCEAN BEACHES

Cisco Beach: Four-mile bike ride to end of Hummock Pond Road. Heavy surf; lifeguard. No facilities. Parking. Rip currents can be strong.

Ladies Beach: To access, turn left at the end of Bartlett Farm Road. No facilities; no lifeguard. Limited parking. Rip current can be strong; heavy surf.

Miacomet Beach: at the end of Miacomet Road. Surf and rip currents can be dangerous. Parking. No facilities or food service. Families with very young children may prefer Miacomet Pond.

South Shore Beach: at the end of South Shore Rd. Limited parking; difficult to access beach, 4WD is advisable. No lifeguard; no facilities.

Surfside: Located at the end of Surfside Road, a three-mile ride on paved bike path or take the shuttles. Easy to park. Plenty of surf, wide beach is good for picnics, beach games, and surfcasting. Kite flying west of Surfside Beach is acceptable; for safety reasons, please do not fly kites east of Surfside toward the airport. Due to the number of people who frequent Surfside Beach during the day, it is inadvisable to fly kites during the peak beachgoing hours. Lifeguard, restrooms, showers, public phones, food service. Shuttle service from town to Surfside Beach is available seasonally.

Fisherman’s Beach: Located between Surfside Beach and Nobadeer. No parking; Beach access via steep wooden steps. Plenty of surf, wide beach is good for picnics, beach games, and surfcasting. No lifeguard; no facilities.

Nobadeer: Located near the airport. Limited parking; difficult to access beach. Plenty of surf, wide beach is good for picnics, beach games, and surfcasting. No lifeguard; no facilities.

Madequecham: Land Bank property at the end of Madequecham Valley Road; rough sand road. Parking. No facilities; no lifeguards. Rip current can be strong; heavy surf.

Tom Nevers (“Pebble Beach“): Surf can be heavy; very coarse sand. No lifeguard; no facilities. Good for fishing. Strong rip currents; heavy surf. Access to the beach can be difficult.

WESTERN SHORE - OCEAN BEACHES

Madaket: As far west as you can go, six-mile bike ride on scenic, paved bike path, or take the shuttle bus. Heavy surf, lifeguard, restrooms. Famous for its incredible sunsets.

EASTERN SHORE - OCEAN BEACHES

Siasconset: Regular shuttle bus service or seven-mile ride on paved bike path. Surf can be heavy; lifeguard. Food available in nearby village of ’Sconset. Low Beach: 4WD access. Surf can be heavy; no lifeguard.

BAY & POND BEACHES

Miacomet Pond: Fresh water pond on Nantucket. Good for young children. Parking; no lifeguard, no facilities. Snapping turtles may be encountered.

Pocomo Beach: Great for kayaking and to learn to windsurf. Just west of the Head of the Harbor. Good for children. No lifeguards, no facilities.

Eel Point: Good for fishing and watching the sunset. No lifeguard; no facilities. Limited parking. Rip currents can be strong.

Coskata-Coatue and Great Point: at the end of Wauwinet Road, past The Wauwinet Inn. Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge managed by Trustees of Reservations; beach sticker required for vehicles from Trustees of Reservations. Great for fishing and for seeing Great Point Lighthouse up close. Rolling dunes, bayberry, beach plum, heather, and beach grass. Salt marsh and maritime shrubland. The largest red cedar savanna and woodland in New England. Gray and harbor seals. Public restrooms available at the lighthouse Memorial Day-Columbus Day. Sections of the refuge are sometimes closed to protect nesting shorebirds. Dogs permitted only from Sept. 16 thru March 31 and must be leashed at all times. Sesachacha Pond: off Polpis Road. Great for families; warm water; no facilities; no lifeguard. Parking. Near the Audubon Sesachacha Heathlands and Wildlife Sanctuary.

BEACH SAFETY

•Learn to swim. If you can’t swim an overhead stroke for at least 15 minutes you should not be in the ocean. •Never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy, and swim near a lifeguard whenever possible. •Stay out of the “surf zone” where the waves break at the shoreline. Waves are at their greatest force here, and even a small wave can lift you up and throw you headfirst into the sand. •Never run from the beach into the water and dive headfirst into the waves. Sandbars that cannot be seen from the surface may be present and/or the water may be too shallow. •Don’t jump or dive into the water from a pier or rock jetty. From a pier or jetty, water appears much deeper than it really is. What looks like 10 or 20 feet of water may only be 2 to 3 feet deep. Diving in could be fatal. The same applies for jumping headfirst into the ocean or a wave from a surfboard – don’t do it! It’s not a risk worth taking. •If you are body surfing or boogie boarding, always keep your arms out in front of you to protect your head and neck. •A rip current will pull you away from the shore, but it will not pull you under. If you’re caught in a rip current, do not swim toward the shore! Instead, swim parallel to the shore, until you’re out of the rip current. Then, swim in to shore. •Never drink alcohol or use drugs at the beach. It clouds your ability to make wise decisions, and that could be fatal! •Take direction from lifeguards at all times.

AAN Opens Two New Exhibits May 26

Main Street’s flower-filled fountain… boats bobbing in Nantucket harbor… longer days and moon-lit bays… our island’s beautiful early summer afternoons: see them all expressed on canvas in the Artists Association of Nantucket’s new exhibit Nothing But Blue Skies. The exhibition opens on Friday, May 26 in the Cecelia Joyce & Seward Johnson Gallery at 19 Washington Street.

“Nothing But Blue Skies is an exhibition designed to showcase the beauty of the island as it bursts forth with its summer flora and fauna. Being one of the most comprehensive venues for local art, our broad cross section of artist’s work includes everything from jewelry, oil paintings, watercolors, pastels, ceramics, glass sculptures, mixed media, photographs, and some textiles,” said AAN gallery director Peter J. Greenhalgh.

Also opening on Friday, May 26 is AAN’s Think Big exhibit in their Big Gallery, upstairs at 12 Straight Wharf. “This exhibition will premiere large works by our members that are too large to show in our Cecelia Joyce & Seward Johnson Gallery, with a focus on abstract pieces,” said AAN artistic director and curator Robert Frazier. With its lofty ceilings and extra-long windows, the Big Gallery lends itself beautifully to showcasing larger works in many different mediums. “We are looking forward to seeing what our artists bring in to jump-start the summer season,” added Frazier.

and Mickey. I think this story has more of a Karate Kid feel to it (because the villain doesn’t ever seem to be redeemed, at least not until the Cobra Kai remake four decades later). It goes like this...

Let’s call our hero Beth. She moves to the magical land of Nantucket and decides to learn how to surf cast after her well-meaning husband bought her a rod and reel setup for Mother’s Day in 2018. Beth grew up in Newport, RI. She knows a lot about sailing but never did any fishing. She is, however, smart and athletic. And tough. As in marathon runner tough. She’s run more than a dozen marathons, with very respectable times. She’s also given birth to two daughters, thus qualifying her for the aforementioned Mother’s Day gift. Finally, she’s put up with her husband’s nonsense for more than 25 years. Yeah, she’s tough.

Beth’s well-meaning husband attempted to show her how to cast (backstory: he’s a beach fishing guide), but the two quickly grow irritated at each other. So Beth builds on the fundamentals that she was taught and persistently works at her casting until she can throw her lure a respectable distance. Her summer Sundays at Great Point often result in Beth catching blues, false albacore, bonito, and the occasional daytime striper.

Life is great until the evil villain shows up in the spring of 2022. Breast cancer. Surgery. Chemotherapy. Radiation. Hair loss. Energy drained. And surfcasting, something that Beth has learned to do well and love, is taken away from her for most of 2022. Fear and uncertainty attack our hero daily, but she never blinks. She endures all the treatments and side effects, combined with the necessary travel, all while maintaining her job and her roles as a mother and wife. Heroes do hero stuff, right?

Things look bleak in the dark, cold days at the end of 2022. That’s when our wizard arrives at the perfect time. In Rocky, the wizard was Mickey. For Daniel, our karate kid, it was Mr. Miyagi. Beth’s wizard is Jeff Allen, maker of Fish Stix Nantucket fishing rods. Jeff learned about Beth’s struggles and saw a way to help. He created a beautiful 9-foot magic wand, a fishing rod that perfectly fits Beth’s physical frame and, most importantly, her temperament. This rod, along with a fantastic IRT reel (a gift from her love interest – let’s call him Stevie) show up

under Beth’s Christmas tree. The gift is perfect. It gives Beth hope as she continues to fight the evil villain.

Now every great movie needs the showdown in a dramatic setting where our hero confronts the villain. In The Karate Kid, the setting was the Under 18 AllValley Karate Championship. In our story, it was the Spring Sea Run Opener Fishing Tournament. It’s May 3, 2023, and no one on Nantucket has yet landed the first beach striped bass of the year. Rafael Osona, the tournament organizer, was surprised. A bunch of hard-charging fishermen have been casting in the areas where the first bass is often caught, but to no avail. The stage is now set for the epic battle.

Beth and her love interest load up the pickup truck with waders, a small sampling of lures, and, of course, Beth’s Fish Stix magic wand. They head to the Cisco area. The surf conditions are rough but better than the previous day when they were downright dangerous. Beth picks up her magic wand and chooses a soft plastic bait. She stands boldly in the surf and starts casting. She senses that there’s fish around, but if so, they’re not biting what she’s throwing. Time to change it up. Beth puts on a Denny Dias made French fry soft plastic bait with a lead jig head. She moves to the east of her erstwhile love interest and gets back to it. A fish attacks her lure. She sets the hook and the fight is on! The crashing surf makes it tough to navigate as Beth pulls the fish towards the beach. A huge wave knocks Beth back on her heels and propels the fish well ahead of where it had been. Her line goes slack. Has the fish escaped?

No! Beth recovers her footing. She tightens her line. The love interest makes himself useful and scoops the fish up and out of the wash, onto the beach. The battle is won. Beth holds her fish modestly, but knowing that the stars have aligned to bring about this triumphant moment where our hero has vanquished the evil and the All-Valley trophy (strike that) the Spring Sea Run Opener First Bass Award is hers!

Beth is strong. She is healthy. She has amazingly awesome new hair. And she is going to catch a lot of fish this year and for years to come.

And if any Hollywood types out there are reading this, have your people call my people. Let’s do lunch.

Sandplain Grassland habitats have been managed by conservation groups and agencies for decades. As early successional habitats, they require some kind of disturbance to be maintained. In a “natural setting,” without human intervention, that disturbance may be in the form of periodic wildfires, wind and salt spray, and grazing by mammals. Land managers mimic these disturbances with prescribed fire, mowing or brush hogging, selective species removal, tree cutting, and combinations of all of these treatments to maintain and encourage grassland species.

While many of these actions have worked historically to treat grasslands, there has been growing concern from land managers about the lack of success in recent years. Problems include increasing woody plant encroachment, more and new non-native invasive species, and changes in the ability to use certain management techniques.

The recent paper is the result of the Sandplain Grassland Network working to bring together these concerns and offer solutions: it’s a blueprint for future actions. It’s also important to the authors, myself included, that the information be open and accessible for anyone to utilize. The network performed a literature review of both published and unpublished reports along with interviews with land managers from across the region. It was determined that our management efforts need to expand in order to reduce woody plant cover that is impacting rare species and driving succession. While we have made good progress in the shortterm and have learned a great deal about these habitats, management is currently not adequate to maintain this system over the long-term considering both current conditions and the implications of climate change.

The network worked through 242 sources of literature (published and unpublished) and interviewed 31 practitioners about their experiences managing and working in Sandplain Grasslands. The interviews were an important component since many people working with these habitats have in-house, internal knowledge and publishing their knowledge or making it otherwise available wasn’t always a

priority. It was important to the Sandplain Grassland Network and to the future of management, to record this knowledge and make the information broadly available before people retired and moved on. Managers can learn from their predecessors’ experience and use it as a baseline for the future.

Recommendations for Sandplain Grassland management include experimenting with different combinations of management techniques including prescribed fire, mowing, and direct removal of woody plants to reduce the amount of woody cover which is limiting grasses and wildflowers.

“We need to manage these habitats more intensively than we have done in the past,” said Dr. Chris Neill, an Ecosystem Ecologist with the Woodwell Climate Research Center. “Climate change will also be a challenge as managers will have to consider species movement, changes in precipitation, and impacts on management techniques such as prescribed fire.”

In addition to the recommendations for current management, the network outlines future challenges Sandplain Grasslands are facing. The paper highlights knowledge gaps and areas for new research, making it a great place to start for those looking for new projects. These include looking at how the foundational species of these grassland communities are responding to climate change. With warming temperatures and changing precipitation, how species respond will ultimately influence how the ecosystem will fare in the near future. Other indirect impacts of climate change include limitations in the use of prescribed fire, since climate change impacts make using fire during the growing season more unpredictable. New and experimental methods of soil disturbance are also discussed.

Both the Nantucket Conservation Foundation and the Linda Loring Nature Foundation are local founding members of the Sandplain Grassland Network and are co-authors on the paper. Much of the research and experts interviewed are based on Nantucket or had previously worked in our Sandplain Grasslands.

So while the beaches are the highlight for many visiting Nantucket, our grasslands are where the real excitement is. To read the paper, the full manuscript is currently available “early access” at the Journal of Restoration Ecology.

On Friday, May 26, Egan Maritime opens its Nantucket Shipwreck & Lifesaving Museum for the 2023 season. This year’s featured exhibition, Rum Runners and Rum Chasers: Nantucket, Prohibition & the U.S. Coast Guard, continues a series honoring the organizations that came together in 1915 to form the U.S. Coast Guard. This new exhibit presents how demands of war, technology, and law enforcement changed America’s oldest maritime military force. With the enactment of Prohibition, the government tasked the Coast Guard and its unique law enforcement powers to go after smugglers, bootleggers, criminal gangs, and rumrunners. Nantucketers cooperated and sometimes did not: partying remained a mainstay of life on our island.

staggering through the hedges at least once. And then, just as I am contemplating freezing balls of bacon fat and peanut butter for the winter (with gravel), the behavior stops. The lights go out around ten o’clock. Rihanna uses her ear phones. Nobody staggers past the driveway.

I don’t think anything magical has happened. I don’t think anyone has gone to the neighbors with a list, a stern look, and the words “Now, see here, my good man...” on his lips. I think Nantucket happened.

My neighbors are from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Newton. Their worlds operate under certain rules of physics which do not apply to the island. Off-island, everyone passes each other inside BMW’s and Kia’s. They glance over the steering wheel, nod from the front seat, but never quite acknowledge that there is anything connecting the two people that a good goose of the accelerator won’t cure. They won’t see their neighbors at the Starbucks or at the SubWay or even at the Whole Foods on Saturday when they have the organic wine tasting. Nor will they meet at Kiwanis or at the Fireman’s Breakfast or even at church on Sunday morning. They go from house to car to office to car to house without anything but a nod at the stop sign at the end Golfview Drive.

In short, they live in a world governed by rights. They have rights to the trash, rights to the dog walk, and rights to the front yard. They live in gated communities with binders full of rules and regulations. Traffic lights and stop signs govern their interactions with each other, whether they are in automobiles or not. This decorum seems rooted in politeness—“We’ll just let them sort this out themselves”—but really comes from a sort of selfishness. I don’t want their drama: I have enough drama of my own.

Now they come to the island, without binders full of duties and requirements. Instead of those rules, comes consideration. They can stand on the accelerator as often as they’d like, they aren’t going to get past ‘Sconset. And, at the end of the day, they still come back to their houses with their neighbors. They see us at the beach and at the Stop and Shop, at Hatch’s and at the hospital, and it occurs

to them that they can’t really avoid us. We will witness the drama, be it in their backyard or at the Seagrille. It’s all there.

And we can’t avoid our neighbors. I can’t break their windows this January with my peanut butter rat-bombs because I will see them every day this summer. I will know what brought the swamp to their reclaimed oak flooring and their granite counter tops. I will know what brought the contractors out next April and will feel ever so ashamed when I see them in the grocery store with Skippy Peanut Butter in my basket. Just as the accelerator can’t free my neighbor, the calendar can’t free me. I have no car to hide in either, nor any hedge to hide behind. We both stand naked in our outdoor showers.

That’s Nantucket.

It’s a common wealth, joint stock society where we cannibals must look out for these christians. And vice versa. We both need each other for a summer free from drama. They will want to pick blackberries with their friends. We will want to park our cars in the driveway. Off island, their rights would be ennumerated and assumed. Here, we should consider what it must be like in the other house right now, at two in the morning, when Rihanna is back at it again.

I feel the guilty pull of the common wealth when I see the bicyclists going the wrong way. This weekend, two women, well into their cups, went rolling the wrong way down Main Street on a tandem. They stopped every ten yards, giggled, then rolled for another painful ten yards, before coming to a hard stop and giggling again. Eventually, the spectators pointed out the traffic laws, and the women went teetering back to the tent.

While I never rode a tandem or wore heels that high, I certainly tooled my Univega at high speeds up the one-way streets near Five Corners until I nearly planted myself in the hood of my Department Head. She didn’t need to say anything. I was able to figure out the traffic rules myself. So, I forgive the drunken girls and hope that they are able to learn the lessons of Nantucket faster than I did.

The refuge provides multiple habitats for an array of coastal plant and animal species, including heather and beach plum, a maritime oak forest & savannah of red cedar – the largest of its kind in New England – which offer shelter to deer. At the beachfront, watch for horseshoe crabs advancing in extremely slow motion, seals basking in the sun, and shorebirds skittering above the surf line.
