“What I love about the camera is its ability to capture the beauty of light. When we free ourselves and accept its inherent technical inefficiencies, the camera lets us experience images that our deft eyes will not let us see. The camera gifts us with moments that makes one marvel at the multi-dimensional world around us.”
Kenyan born American artist Mohamed Yakub’s artistic vision will be on display starting this Thursday, July 6 in The Hostetler Gallery, when Susan Hostetler features his stunning Kimonos during her first 2023 Art and Wine Sensory Experience from 5 to 7 pm. Also featured will be a tasting of South African wines poured by Nantucket’s Current Vintage.
Passionate about his photography, Yakub, is inspired by the form and function of Japanese kimonos: the exhibit that opens Thursday will focus on four of his pieces. Adorned with beautiful colors and images based on photographs he has taken around New York, Yakub’s sees the kimono as “the ultimate canvas,” and a symbol of cultural universality. He explained: “I found that my work actually mimicked the norms and traditions of kimono decoration and also, I was not alone in reinterpreting the kimono. In Japan, there is a strong movement toward bringing the kimono into the 21st century. I also discovered that the interpretation of colors is similar in a lot of cultures in the world.”
Located in downtown at 42 Centre Street, Hostetler Gallery exhibits sculpture, paintings, photography and fine art prints, with a focus on the sculpture of David Hostetler. Throughout the 2023 season, the gallery will display up and coming as well as mature artist’s works celebrating the human form, the abstract and color.

Stories of Island Rum Runners
by Charles AllardFrom 1920 to 1933, the 18th Amendment to our United States Constitution prohibited the manufacture, sale, transport, import, or export of alcoholic beverages: but the 18th Amendment and the Volstead Act never barred the consumption of alcohol.
During the 13 years that Prohibition was the law of the land, liquor smuggling was common in the waters around Nantucket. Rum Row, a floating liquor “store” of foreign and domestic boats, was located just 12 miles southeast of Nantucket.
Though Nantucket did not suffer the level of mob activity of cities and towns on the mainland, our island was plagued by some crime related to liquor smuggling. During this period, WWI veterans acted as special policemen, a role that proved hazardous. One nearly died in December 1930, when a local rumrunner hired men to kidnap and murder him. The hitmen left him tied, gagged, and beaten in Prospect Hill Cemetery.
This year's featured exhibit at Egan Maritime Insitute’s Nantucket Shipwreck and Lifesaving Museum tells the dramatic stories of Nantucket during Prohibition in Rum Runners and Rum Chasers: Nantucket, Prohibition and the U.S. Coast Guard The focus is on the consequences for the Coast Guard of the enactment of Prohibition in 1920 when making, selling, or transporting alcohol in the U.S. became illegal. As the oldest armed force in America, it inherited federal law enforcement powers from one of its predecessors, the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service, the other being the U.S. Lifesaving Service. The Coast Guard came together in 1915 with the merger of these two government organizations.
During the intervening years, the Coast Guard absorbed other maritime-related tasks, but it is best known for its rescue and law enforcement activities. The latter power received attention from the government when it became apparent

Braving the Dangers of Fiction
by Robert P. BarsantiI found myself, this spring, defending my summer reading list. Now, as an old white man, I am used to a certain sort of academic battle, and I have generally chosen the prudent retreat over the final climactic fight. The years of assigning Huckleberry Finn for summer reading, or John Steinbeck, or even Agatha Christie have gone with purple photocopies.
Modern high school students are not tolerant of the vices and prejudices of previous generations. Further, asking them to read five hundred or a thousand pages is a fool’s errand. That book will sit next to the game controller until it falls off the desk and under the table. I have surrendered the most literary of arguments: that you need to have read Jane Austen or Charles Dickens to be well-read. I waved them goodbye. Our society doesn’t believe that any more.
My twentieth-century sensibility about reading comes from the selfishness of my own world view. I can’t think of a better use of an hour than to sit on Cisco Beach in the warmth of a July sun with a book and a beverage. In the rest of my life, I need to crowbar holes in time in order to read. Other people need me and want me by their sides—there are people to pick up at the boat, buy grapes and Cheerios at the store, and then finish drying the towels for tomorrow.
A beach needs no rationalization. It is its own goal. By the time you reach it, other commitments and entanglements have been left behind like laundry. Your social media will just tick by without you. Your phone is out of range and in danger of getting swallowed by a wave. Your laptop can’t connect. The best reading room on-island gets washed by the tide and decorated by sand fleas.
So when I assign summer reading to Adam and Abergiveny, I assume that they will also be in a beach chair, wearing damp swim suits, turning pages. Work will resume the next day, their friends and parents will leave them alone, and their toes will dig down into the south shore sand. Now, I know enough to know that when my students read, they are not at the beach, nor are they without their phones, nor are they uninterrupted.
No one, not the richest or the poorest student, can sit on a beach all summer and wander through the pleasures of Dickens and Atwood. But the purpose for summer reading is to push the rest of buzzing and vibrating society away from their minds for a few hours. My students need to be able to close the doors and seal themselves into a room of their own, then throw Snapchat and TikTok out the window. An intellect needs solitude, not screaming or society.
Recently, I have been fighting about fiction. My students will read memoir, with its ever hopeful uplift and sincerity. They will read non-fiction, if it promises to teach them facts and stories that follow a similar line. We read Born a Crime because it is personal, honest, and ends with the success of the main character. In memoir and in most non-fiction, the reader remains in a protected place. They don’t need to descend into an underwater world of psychology, empathy, and murder. Instead, they can remain dry and onboard, peering at the deeper world through the safety of a glass-bottomed boat. They don’t read Trevor Noah’s story and become Trever Noah—he will always be a funny raconteur telling them his story from safety of the country club porch of the future.

Their Happy Place
by Steve “Tuna” TornovishBeach fishing doesn’t have to be a solitary experience. Sure, you’re not going to hang out with a lot of people if you’re out fishing a slack tide at zero dark thirty, but there’s lots of time to meet new people when you’re out in the daylight. And that’s how I met Brian and Tracy Majczak. We were introduced while fishing with friends at Great Point on a Sunday afternoon. They are the kind of people you instantly like. Tracy, a first grade teacher, is a warm, happy person who just brightens the world. Brian is a solid, steady guy who lives to fish. Yeah, these are my kinds of people! And it got even better when Brian and I discovered that we share September birth dates (I arrived 11 years ahead of Brian). How could I not want to hang out with these two?
I sat down with the Majczaks recently on Great Point, the place that Tracy calls their Happy Place. The fish were hiding, so Brian and I actually had some time to catch up.
Tracy told me, “We first came to Nantucket 24 years ago. I remember that it was 1999, and we were on the boat going back home. The boat crew spotted a life preserver in the water. The boat had to stop and recover it because it was just after JFK Jr.’s plane had gone down. But we felt that Nantucket was special. It was fun. We had been to Newport, Martha’s Vineyard and Block Island. Nantucket was the best.”
Brian reminisced about his first experiences fishing Great Point. “Some friends brought us out to Great Point. This was back when the Point was open and you could cast into the rip. We caught a ton of bluefish. It was amazing!”
Brian spent a lot of his Nantucket time at Barry Thurston’s Tackle Shop in town after that experience. Barry gave Brian a lot of tips about what equipment to use and how to fish the Nantucket waters. Brian was a sponge and took it all in. “I still have my shirt from Barry’s tackle shop. I wore it one day when I knew Barry was working (Barry now works as a ranger for the Trustees of Reservations, patrolling Great Point). He loved it. Barry was the one who told me that the bluefish were fun but the fall fishing for stripers and albies was the best. He told me

Using Nantucket with Love & Respect
by Dr. Sarah Treanor Bois, PhD Director of Research & Education at the Linda Loring Nature FoundationWe love to boast about the open space on our island. We are so fortunate for the early insight of those who began preserving land so long ago with the idea of conserving the island’s natural landscapes for the benefit of the whole community. With more than 50% of Nantucket’s land mass under some kind of conservation, there is so much natural beauty to explore. From rolling terrain of the Middle Moors, to the wetlands of Squam, the grasslands of the south shore, access to our beautiful coastline, and the natural wonder of our barrier beach system of Coatue; we have much to be thankful for.
The organizations that own these lands each have their own missions and guiding principals. There is overlap among some, for sure, but each is specific to the organization’s primary focus. For example, the Nantucket Land Bank’s mission “Conservation, recreation and agriculture for the benefit of the public in perpetuity” has a focus that includes recreation and public access to water. The Nantucket Conservation Foundation (NCF) is more focused on the overall conservation of resources by “permanently conserving, maintaining, and managing natural areas and habitats and to encourage an appreciation of and interest in the island’s natural resources.” The Linda Loring Nature Foundation (LLNF) mission is place-based, focusing on preserving the “…biological diversity of its 275acre property on Nantucket and connects people of all ages to nature through outstanding environmental education and research.” These missions have distinctions, but they also compliment each other. Our conservation groups work together to protect Nantucket Island as a whole, while upholding their own missions.
The other thing we love about these organizations is that they are locally

Part 2: Crime and Punishment
by James GriederAs we learned last week in Part 1: Island Children Running Rampant, during the mid-1800s, many Nantucket youth were participating in “wicked and lawless conduct.” We continue this week with what efforts were made to deter this behavior and to reform island children...
In the mid-1850s, there is an increase in calls in the newspapers for the town to crack down on the out-of-control youth:
BY-LAWSConcerning Truant Children.
“That when any child or children between the ages of six and fifteen years, shall neglect to attend the Public or any other schools of Nantucket…and shall become an habitual truant or truants, and not attend any school, and without lawful occupation shall be growing up in ignorance, then it shall be the duty of the Committee appointed by the Town to have charge of these children…and for each and every such truancy and non-attendance there shall be imposed a fine of One Dollar [around $35 per child per day in today’s currency] for the use of the Town and all the cost of prosecution…. The Town expects that there shall be no children allowed to absent themselves from these nurseries of improvement.” (Mar 11, 1854 Nantucket Weekly Mirror)
“That there has been much remissness is this respect, that there have been many children among us who seldom, if ever attend our schools, and still others who are exceedingly irregular in their attendance. Previous laws have been almost entirely inoperative. Truants, in many instances, have cared but little whether attended by a constable or or by their associates, and have again been absent. It has been no great punishment to be thus escorted, as the vast majority of absences among the boys will amply demonstrate.

“With the present arrangement, it will, at least, be very inconvenient, if not expensive, to be absent from school, without good and sufficient reasons. And in the more difficult cases, where the truants become unmanageable by all ordinary means, the State has generously and wisely provided for the education of such, at what are usually termed ‘State Reform Schools.’” (Mar 18, 1854 Nantucket Weekly Mirror)
Henry W. Giles, a Unitarian minister and writer who had lectured at the Nantucket Atheneum three months before, wrote in August 1854 that “boys, next to women, abound, or seem to abound, in Nantucket. This seeming, we suppose, arises from the absence of men. Visitors, we were told, had complained as to the conduct of these boys. It would not be strange if, without the presence and control of fathers, they were a little wild…”
Two years later, in an article about agriculture on Nantucket in the Boston Cultivator, the author notes that the very idea of agriculture on the island “may sound strange to people who suppose that Nantucket is only a heap of sand that answers for a home for whalemen’s wives, daughters, and small boys [italics in text].”
For their part, the children objected to the town ruining all their fun. The January 16, 1856 edition of the Inquirer and Mirror records two letters from “some of our ‘fast youths’,” self-described “b’hoys” complaining about the “meanness of the town of Nantucket” in pouring ashes on the slides in the vicinity of Academy Hill. “It is winter only once a year, and if people cannot let young America enjoy themselves during that time we think it a pity. YOUNG AMERICA”
Under the headline “ABSENT” in the November 21 edition of the newspaper, the editor stated that at a review of one of the local public schools it was revealed that “out of a school of about one hundred pupils, all but ten had been absent more or less.” Acknowledging that there were probably some legitimate cases where a child was too sick to attend school, they wrote that “it would be absurd to suppose that such a large proportion of the pupils were sick in the term,” and

that “the whim of the pupils was the actual reason of many of the absences” and that parents “are responsible for the indulgence of those whims.”
A week later, the editor of the Nantucket Weekly Mirror railed against juvenile behavior in church, “those children between the years of twelve and twenty, and mostly those with bonnets on, who greatly annoy the congregation with their noisy whispering and half-smothered laughing,” not to mention “writing nonsense on the fly-leaves” of hymnals. “This whispering and laughing,” he said, “is too often carried on in the pew under the eyes of the parents, who make no effort to check this growing evil.”
Out in the streets it was worse: “crowds of great boys who nightly congregate at the corners of streets, so regardless of others’ rights as to make the ladies turn off the walk to get by, and then impudently comment on their timidity, because they did not dash through their midst.” Sometimes in the evening he would “see boys following women and girls, and saying such things as even shame the hearers and disgrace themselves; but we suppose they do not read the paper, so our comments would not reach them.”
A complaint the following spring about “some of the masters and misses who went [to a lecture] not to hear but to annoy those who did” led to a heated exchange of letters to the editors that spanned two newspapers, with one writer blaming the teachers in attendance who failed to control the students, another saying it was their parents’ fault, and a third calling for a public listing of names of some of the teachers themselves, “who have more than once, amused themselves at the lectures, by noticing, laughing at, and conversing about the personal appearance, and peculiarities of different lecturers, much to the annoyance of others.”
Vandalism seems to have been an ongoing problem. An ad in the July 18, 1857 edition of the Nantucket Weekly Mirror offered a $5 reward [around $170 in today’s currency] for information leading to the arrest of whoever had been smashing the windows in Town Buildings, destroying street Lanterns, and injuring the Town Trees.” In 1859, the Humane Society posted a $25 reward [just over $850 in 2023] because “some evil-minded person or persons have recently broken open by forcing the lock, the Humane Society’s House at or near Hummock Pond,” where they “committed depredations, and stolen certain articles therefrom.”
In an August 19, 1857 edition of the Inquirer and Mirror, a letter to the editor

inveighed against “Corner Loafers”—“Is there no way that the gang of boys and half-grown men (or pretenders to be men) that stand around the corners of our most public streets particularly Philip H. Folger’s corner [at the intersection of Orange and Main streets, across from Mitchell’s Book corner], can be broken up? At any time from five to nine o’clock, P.M., these loafers can be seen, numbering from twelve to twenty, blocking up the sidewalk, so that ladies passing must be obliged to go through the crowd, and have their dresses soiled by the tobacco spittle that is ejected from the foul mouths, or turn off the walks and get around as best they can, hearing jeers and insulting remarks.” As to which town official should be responsible, he said “it strikes me it would come under the Hog Reeve’s duty.”
Conditions continued to deteriorate, with a call for LAW AND ORDER appearing in the October 28, 1859 Inquirer and Mirror. “Persons committed to our house of correction for stated periods may be seen daily in the streets; the corners of our principal streets are blocked nightly by crowds of men and boys, spitting, swearing, and insulting passers-by.” There were multiple complaints about “nuisances of too gross a nature to mention,” where unknown individuals lobbed tobacco spit at the doors and windows of nearby houses. “Depredations are nightly committed, gardens robbed, etc.,” they wrote, and urged that some of the perpetrators be detained and made an example of.
They then listed other examples of recent offenses against good order:
A man was sitting in his office when two bricks were thrown through the window, one after the other, narrowly missing the occupant.
“A lady storekeeper was insulted and imposed upon by a gang of idlers, and the watch being called upon, simply stated to the crowd that Mrs. — wished him to ask them to go away! which they did not do, or at least but for a few moments.”
“A rascal threw a handful of pepper into the face of a young lady” one evening while walking on Orange Street. “She was taken into a house near by in great distress.”

who often declined to prosecute because “the person who breaks your windows, robs your garden, insults you or your child, is perhaps a ‘distant relation’.”
In that same edition of the paper appeared another news item, titled LARCENY. “Two boys, aged about twelve, named Davis and Perkins, were taken before justice Bunker on a charge of entering the store of Mr. John Williams, on Milk Street, and stealing there-from about thirteen dollars in money [$450 in 2023]. They were convicted and sent to the House of Correction for two months.”
Things came to a head in November 1859, when a Town Meeting was called to address the “manifest necessity for more vigilance on the part of the watchmen, and an increase of numbers, in order to render the watch more efficient” because the “streets are infested with standing nuisances, by night and day...” The new watchmen should be “temperate men, and men of good physical health” able to stay awake through their shift and, as needed, “keep the corners and streets clear, and to preserve order on Sundays, in the day-time” so that “all rudeness, loud talking, and that loud laughing which speaks the vacant mind, should cease from the streets; and all should pass to some destination, without the hindrance of others.”
Restive youth continued to be a problem over the years. In 1860, with war clouds gathering on the mainland that would soon result in even more young men leaving the island, the editor of the Nantucket Weekly Mirror reported that they’d received “much and reasonable complaint of the annoyance which rude youths and boys inflict upon our audiences at public entertainments, by various modes of disturbance”—in the immediate instance, disrupting a concert in the Atheneum’s Great Hall. The author suggested that the renters of the space, rather than the Atheneum proprietors, should hire police officers “to preserve order in the hall” and have the miscreants dragged in front of a justice of the peace to receive judgment.
Over the spring and summer of 1860, the beleaguered community was afflicted by an escalation in the criminal activity to arson, primarily outside of town and beyond the prying eyes of neighbors and watchmen. Joseph Farnham records one particular example that he describes as “the most wicked and cruel of anything I ever knew occuring at Nantucket in my boyhood.” A large barn on Charles C. Folger’s farm, sitting slighly southwest of Madaket Road, two or three miles outside of town, was quickly engulfed in flames. It was an exceptionally warm

day for November 1, and Farnham and his friends had gone for a swim. As the sun set, an increasing glow from the west drew everyone’s attention, and “in retrospect, it appears as though the entire population of the town proper was at that fire.” As they grew closer, the anguished bellows of terrified horses and cattle, trapped in the barn, grew louder and louder. The barn eventually burned to the ground, with the complete loss of all the livestock, as well as carts and farming equipment.
Folger’s assistant, a young man of twenty named Dan Hart, was the first on the scene after returning from town. Subsequent examination revealed that Hart was the one who, in fact set the fire then headed into town, but stopping along the way to return, only to find the barn fully engulfed. Before he left, he had shuttered and barred all the doors and windows. Hart was convicted of the crime, and sentenced in 1861 to ten years in state prison.
A house near the south end of Long Pond, along with an adjacent shed and the skiff inside it were burned to the ground, “the second instance within six months, of houses out of town having been set on fire and destroyed,” according to a March 1860 edition of the Nantucket Weekly Mirror. Less than a month later, a small fire was discovered at a warehouse on Angola Street, but it was contained before it did much damage. The paper pointed out that the town had narrowly avoided a repeat of the catastrophic fire of 1846—the warehouse that had been set on fire was near a large shed containing 2000 barrels of sperm oil, and the wind direction that day would have showered cinders down on the nearby wooden buildings, in an area without access to a supply of water to fight a larger fire.
Witnesses in the area identified “two youths named Franklin B. Chase and Henry C. Stackpole” as the culprits; they were arrested and brought before the local magistrate, at which point they confessed to other, earlier fires they had set. He said that the two boys had been “prowling around in the north part of town,” as described by the newspaper, “seeking a suitable spot whereon to plant their combustibles.” They tried breaking into local businesses, from a cooper’s shop near Cliff Road to a candle house on Pine Street, before settling on the warehouse
outside of town. Stackpole admitted that he had also set fire to Isaiah Nicholson’s barn, and Chase confessed to burning the shop of Christopher Hussey two years previously. As to motive—“in reply to a question put by the magistrate, Stackpole stated that in setting the various fires confessed to, he or they had no particular motive for their destructive conduct.” The paper went on to note that “there are still several suspicious characters at large, upon whose movements a watchful eye rests.”
The two youths were held over for trial, and were found guilty. They were sentenced to state prison for life, although the judge hoped that while there they might learn a useful trade, that would allow for the possibility of “executive clemency”—a pardon from the Governor—if they were found to be reformed. Later in the session another pair of young males, George H. Sanford and Edward P. Orpin—were indicted for burning the tool shed of Rowland Hinckley in March 1860. They received different sentences: Sanford was to be remanded to the state prison for a year, while Orpin received “eight months’ imprisonment in the House of Correction of this County.”
Although often used interchangeably today, “prison,” “jail,” and “house of correction” at that time had different meanings. A prison was for long-term confinement; a jail—or on Nantucket, a gaol—were for temporarily holding people charged with a crime or waiting to be transferred somewhere else; a house of correction was ostensibly a place where petty criminals, vagabonds, dipsomaniacs, and other social “undesirables” could be housed while they learned a trade or were reformed through the power of hard work. The House of Correction on Nantucket was originally located in Quaise near the Poor Asylum and close by Pest House Pond, named for the now-vanished location where people had traditionally been quarantined for smallpox and other communicable diseases. Later it wasmoved to town from Quaise, and placed next to the much smaller Old Gaol. It was demolished in the 1950s.
Other petty crimes continued be committed in town. A fourteen-year-old named William F. Davis was arraigned for larceny, charged with stealing from the shop of John G. Williams. Because this was the second occurrence—he had been sent to the Nantucket House of Corrections the previous October for the exact same offence—the judge ordered that he be committed to the “Nautical Branch of the State Reform School.”

BEACH SAFETY
•Learn to swim. If you can’t swim an overhead stroke for at least 15 minutes you should not be in the ocean. •Never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy, and swim near a lifeguard whenever possible. •Stay out of the “surf zone” where the waves break at the shoreline. Waves are at their greatest force here, and even a small wave can lift you up and throw you headfirst into the sand. •Never run from the beach into the water and dive headfirst into the waves. Sandbars that cannot be seen from the surface may be present and/or the water may be too shallow.
•Don’t jump or dive into the water from a pier or rock jetty. From a pier or jetty, water appears much deeper than it really is. What looks like 10 or 20 feet of water may only be 2 to 3 feet deep. Diving in could be fatal. The same applies for jumping headfirst into the ocean or a wave from a surfboard – don’t do it! It’s not a risk worth taking. •If you are body surfing or boogie boarding, always keep your arms out in front of you to protect your head and neck. •A rip current will pull you away from the shore, but it will not pull you under. If you’re caught in a rip current, do not swim toward the shore! Instead, swim parallel to the shore, until you’re out of the rip current. Then, swim in to shore. •Never drink alcohol or use drugs at the beach. It clouds your ability to make wise decisions, and that could be fatal! •Take direction from lifeguards at all times.

that despite the easy passage of Prohibition, Americans were not too keen on obeying the new law.
None of the government law enforcement agencies prepared for active resistance to the new laws. They were particularly lax in not anticipating the role of organized crime in fulfilling the market demand for spirits of any type or quality. The federal government tasked the Coast Guard with suppressing smugglers and bootleggers working within the country's territorial waters, a job for which they were unprepared. The FBI and local police departments kept busy elsewhere.
The new exhibit emphasizes how Nantucketers and summer visitors avoided consumption restrictions with stories, photos, and maybe a few myths to tell. There is a large, colorful map of the island pointing out locations of, among other things, an underground distillery, a tea house serving smuggled "maple syrup," and a Coast Guard station from which a couple of thousand bottles of smuggled booze simply disappeared.
There was a serious side to enforcing these laws, and the exhibit acknowledges the cost and contributions of the men and women of all law enforcement agencies, especially the U.S. Coast Guard. With the generous support of Congress, the Coast Guard acquired faster and larger ships, new equipment, and heavier armament. The size of the force expanded, and with airplanes, code-breakers, and enhanced communication capabilities, they were getting prepared
for challenges that would be presented during the rest of the twentieth century.
During times of war or under Presidential order, the U.S. Coast Guard becomes part of the U.S. Navy. In World War I, it played a crucial role in coastal defense, and during World War II, it was a full participant in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters. In photos and text, the exhibit tells the story of the USCGC Spencer W36, a ship upon which the museum's founder Robert Caldwell served. This ship and its crew sank a WWII German U-Boat, and recused and captured the U-Boat survivors. International defense missions continue to be a part of the U.S. Coast Guard service to the country.
As noted above, lifesaving is part of the Coast Guard's DNA because the U.S. Lifesaving Service was one of its parent organizations. As steam and motorized ships replaced sailing vessels, the old lifesaving techniques became less critical and disappeared with the introduction of helicopters in the 1950s. Today, few actions exceed the awe with which we view Coast Guard rescues at sea when watching a super swimmer jump out of a helicopter in the middle of a winter storm. All this and more are part of the 2023 featured exhibit at the Egan Maritime Institute's Nantucket Shipwreck & Lifesaving Museum.
Located at 158 Polpis Road, the museum is open Monday through Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm. Their Shipwreck Shuttle offers free rides to and from the museum; the shuttle departs from Visitors Services at 25 Federal Street, on the half-hour, starting at 9:30 am.

based. Islanders prefer taking care of their own. Yes, there are some state-wide organizations with important land, but the majority land owners are island-based. That’s important considering our unique ethic. Our beaches are free, and so are our trails, as is parking at any trail head. So much of what is monetized off-island is free and open here. It’s the Nantucket way.
Some organization like LLNF have additional conservation restrictions on our land listed via a CR. This legally binding document goes above and beyond a mission statement to decree what can and cannot happen on the land. As a wildlife refuge, for example, LLNF doesn’t allow dogs or bicycles, as well as some other prohibitions. It’s not always popular, but that’s on the list of restrictions in order to protect ground-nesting birds and other wildlife. LLNF trails are open for passive recreation, and all are welcome to enjoy the property sunup to sundown. Any restrictions regarding use and activities are prescribed for the protection of resources and our jobs of upholding the mission and the legally binding Conservation Restrictions.
People don’t need to know the details of such restrictions (CRs) or every aspect of a strategic plan unless they’re particularly interested. That is where the leadership and staff of an organization comes in. Along with the board, they work to uphold the mission and steward the land. This can take many forms, mowing fire breaks, maintaining trails, planting trees, building docks, and, yes, even occassionally closing roads. Behind all of these decisions are well thought out plans established in order to achieve various management goals. None of it taken lightly or done impulsively.
As an ecologist, I spent a lot of time in school learning about conservation principals, methods, research, and details about flora and fauna. We learn about threats to our native biodiversity and how to combat them, as well as how to enhance our native biodiversity and habitats all in the name of protecting our ecosystems and our natural resources.

Nantucket with Love & Respect
What we didn’t learn very much about, but something we as conservation professionals contend with every day, is the management of people. Sometimes it’s just additional signage needed to steer someone away from a trail under repair. Other times, it’s getting people to keep their dogs on leashes to protect the nesting birds. Most people understand and want to do the right thing. It’s when a few people take actions or ignore signage that create consequences that affect many more.
Of all of the open space and conservation land on Nantucket, the majority of the more than 9,000 acres is actually private property. And, as such, it is a privilege, not a right, to access, use, and recreate on these lands. We forget that as we park in the lot to head to Ladies Beach, take a walk with the dogs and grab
some poop bags, and throw trash in the can provided. It’s how we do things here: we take care of each other. And that goes for the land as well. Do unto others, right?
Except when we don’t.
Trash and landscape debris tossed onto conservation land, out-of-control beach parties littering the sand, beach fires leaving rusted nails hidden in the sand, and off-road drivers leaving scars on the landscape for years are just a few of the overuse and misuse activities that happen here regularly. Not everyone abuses the privileges of Nantucket, but the actions of those who do result in consequences for everyone.
It’s not an inalienable right to use someone else’s property as you like. We are so fortunate that our beaches are free, the parking is free, trash cans, and trails…all free. But by abusing what is a privilege for us to use, conservation professionals must step in and take action. Our obligation is to the land, the conservation ethic, the mission of the organization, and the wishes of the families who entrusted the lands to us.
It’s true that nature is for all. But nature shouldn’t be exploited and used in every way for people to feel connected to it. There are still trails to enjoy, roads to meander, and docks to sit at and fish.
The classic “Tragedy of the Commons” describes a situation where numerous independent individuals enjoy unfettered access to a finite, valuable resource— a stretch of conservation land, for example. With this unfettered access, some will tend to over-use it, and may end up destroying its value altogether. To exercise voluntary restraint is not a rational choice for any one individual—if they did, the others would merely take over that use—yet the predictable result is a tragedy for all. As we are want to say: Nantucket is different. Historically, our island held sheep in a commons. This practice wasn’t without problems, but islanders worked together to make it a success. We can do that again. Remind each other what is important and take care of our land.
As Aldo Leopold wrote in A Sand County Almanac, “We abuse land because we regard it as a commodity belonging to us. When we see land as a community to which we belong, we may begin to use it with love and respect.”
Let us all treat our open space with love and respect ensuring that this valuable resource remains open for all.
Their Happy Place
that I had to get back to Nantucket in September. He was right.”
from page 9
Brian and Tracy told me that the best thing about fishing Great Point is the relationships that they’ve developed over the years. “I met Michael O’Neil, Dave Small, Liz Shannon, and Kyle Snell while fishing out there. They were always helpful about showing me where and how to fish – different roads, access points. And Mike turned me on to Albie Snax, my favorite lure.” The Albie Snax is a translucent soft plastic bait that fishermen use with a single worm hook, either unweighted or with a lead keel weight. They don’t cast very far, but their action in the water is hard to beat. “If I could fish them with the wind at my back, I would fish them all day long. Soft plastic fishing is my favorite.”
Tracy loves to walk the beach while Brian is fishing. “I went for six miles today. I just walk along, listening to music while walking. I also love Elin Hilderbrand’s books. I bought her newest one to read while Brian is fishing. This is the most relaxing thing for me.” A veteran first grade teacher with 26 years of service is certainly entitled to some Great Point beach relaxation, I would say!
Brian, my birthday twin, hit a special milestone last September when he turned 50 years old. He made it a very special occasion by utilizing a bunch of accrued vacation time and renting a place for five weeks in order to fish the Fall Classic Fishing Tournament. This tournament is basically the Super Bowl of Nantucket fishing. Anglers compete from Labor Day to Columbus Day, seeking to catch their biggest striped bass, bluefish, false albacore, and bonito, as measured by length (catch and release tournament). Those four different species require a lot of skill and endurance to target and catch. Brian was ready. “I’ve participated in this tournament for 11 consecutive years, I believe. I have kept my buttons from each tournament, except for the 2019 one: I lost that one.” If anyone out there has a spare 2019 button, let me know—Brian’s birthday is coming up in a couple of months.
Brian knows his stuff when it comes to beach fishing. “My most memorable day was when I caught 30 albies in one day. That was before the seals were thick, and you could land most of the fish you hooked. I was throwing a bone-colored
continued on page 25
epoxy jig, 7/8 ounce. It was snotty: a big southwest wind was howling. I fished the outside (eastern) edge of Great Point.”
Tracy added, “Thirty is Brian’s lucky number. That was his lacrosse number in college. Plus our first date was on January 30, and our wedding was on September 30. It’s a very special number!”
Brian hit the beach running for the Fall Classic tournament. He quickly caught a big bluefish that measured 36.5 inches. Eventually he beached a 29inch false albacore. He badly needed to catch a bonito, the scarcest of the four tournament fish. Remember how your high school teachers would explain how difficult it is to make up for a zero grade? Yeah, that’s how it is with the bonito. The tournament could not be won without catching a bonito, and not a lot of them were being caught.
Brian persevered. “I finally caught my bonito in the fourth week. Now I knew that I had a chance! It was my make or break moment for the tournament. Then it was time to find a big striper.”
Brian fished hard, putting in 14-hour days. Other fishermen were cheering him on, knowing that he had a shot at winning the tournament. “Dave Small, Dave Bold, and (two time Fall Classic winner) John Colton: they were very supportive and all gave me little tips about where to try.” Brian eventually found his way to Eel Point, an area that had been holding some big fish during the daytime. “Lois Boland (previous Fall Classic winner) had just caught a 41-inch monster during the day. I figured I had a shot.” Brian ended up catching a 37-inch striped bass. That gave him his final point total of 129.5 inches, just four points behind the eventual tournament winner Scott McGovern and enough for a second place finish.
Brian was happy with his effort. “It’s about trying to take in as much as you can. Life is short. I try to maximize my time on the beach. I think it’s a fear of missing out on the big one swimming by!” he laughed.
Brian and Tracy cherish their Nantucket time, particularly their time spent on the beaches of Great Point. They cherish the many friendships that they have developed out there. We should all take a lesson from their good example.

Braving the Dangers of Fiction
from page 7
Fiction does not allow you such safety. You have to inhabit the character, be it speaker or subject, and walk around in its shoes for a while. Huckleberry Finn forces the reader to confront racism because Huck is racist. Of the course of the novel, through misadventure, accident, and brutality, Huck loses the unexamined racism of his Aunts and his home.
For a reader, the realization and the shock of Huck’s racism rattles you in the comfort of the beach chair. But it takes works of fiction to get you off the dry safety of the boat and into the teeming life of the world. When you dry off from Huck Finn, you are not the same person who dove in all of those hours ago.
As such, fiction is dangerous. When you dive into that work, you don’t know what monsters you will encounter—and what monster you might find yourself becoming. Most parents and the school systems that answer their angry phone calls don’t want something as clumsy as a dead white author performing some sort of emotional brain surgery on their child. F. Scott Fitzgerald, in his white male privilege, still goads everyone with the green light ever receding into the past. Agatha Christie, with her cooling cup of Earl Grey and her scones, delicately puts the mind of a murderer in the reader’s head. No matter how many Instagram posts and TikTok videos come after, the possibility of Olde English Murder remains with the reader. Agatha Christie, gentle old soul that she was, lords over a particularly nasty tidepool of life.
I don’t ask students to read fiction so that they can be serial killers, bootleggers, and racists. I ask them to read fiction so that they can develop some empathy. In Atticus Finch’s words, you need to step in someone else’s shoes and walk around for awhile. You need to get in the water, get wet, and see what animals you live with and what animal you are. People all do strange things; the only way to understand that is to get into their heads and swim around a bit.
Our world has created a generation wracked with anxiety and self-doubt, in spite of their trophies and their grades. We have kept them dry and away from shore by leading them through the museums of non-fiction with its comfortable smug distance between “what they thought then” and “what we know now.” In fiction, they have to descend into the near dark, with its bright schools of fish, its skittering crabs, and something flashing white in the depths. Let them see through the minds of others and perhaps they will discover themselves.

Open Daily 9am to sunset. Permits Required Year-Round thetrustees.org/ccwr
Visit the best beaches on the island at the Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge. The greater coastscape, which includes the federally owned Great Point Lighthouse and Nantucket Conservation Foundation land, is a double-fingered peninsula jutting northward between the Atlantic Ocean and Nantucket Sounds is so much more: a blend of sandy beach, rolling dunes, and forest uplands both rugged and serene. The refuge provides multiple habitats for an array of coastal plant and animal species, including heather and beach plum, a maritime oak forest & savannah of red cedar – the largest of its kind in New England – which offer shelter to deer. At the beachfront, watch for horseshoe crabs advancing in extremely slow motion, seals basking in the sun, and shorebirds skittering above the surf line. Over-sand vehicle permits are required: you can purchase them online at thetrustees.org/permits. Rental jeep day passes available at the rental site & day passes available for personal 4x4 vehicles.

It was soon revealed that the State Reform School was itself in need of reform. “Charges of inhuman treatment” were made against the superintendent of the school, “a course of treatment disgraceful to the State, and barbarous in the extreme.” Founded on the principal that children under the age of 17 should not be put in jail among older hardened criminals, but instead reformed of their criminal ways by moral, religious, academic, and vocational education. Rather than attempting to mold the students into productive members of society, under the direction of Superintendent William E. Starr, the school had “inflicted punishments appropriate to the Inquisition, or to Austrian despotism” for even the smallest of infractions. “He has imprisoned not less than twenty boys in cells, ‘black holes,’ the [investigating] committee called them, for terms ranging from sixteen weeks to shorter periods.”
The report, detailed in the August 11, 1860 Nantucket Weekly Mirror, goes on to describe the tiny cells in detail—eight feet long and three feet wide, because of the design they were a cell within a cell, deprived of light and proper ventilation, the air “unfit for respiration by any human being.” There was no bed, and inmates slept on the floor with a blanket, with their hands manacled behind their backs the entire time. They were fed bread and water. The members of the investigating committee were appalled, and their revulsion is apparent in the report, which ends with the terse statement “a complete and immediate re-organization of the school is urgently recommended by the committee.”
An article in an early October edition of the Inquirer and Mirror titled “ROBBERIES” claimed that a thief or thieves had “enter the premises of Mr. B.F. Coffin, on Main Street, and stripped the fruit from a peach tree. Not content with taking the fruit they broke off two or more large limbs, leaving them upon the ground.” It continues, “the next night some party gained an entrance into the paint store of Messrs. Hussey & Coffin, near the head of Straight Wharf, and appropriated property to the amount of about $25 [around $680 in 2023]. The owners didn’t believe that the thief or thieves had arrived on a fishing boat, as word on the street claimed to be the case. Instead, they thought “the articles were taken by some ‘native’ who knew the place well.” Why they thought that goes unreported.
Moses Joy, Esq. complained in the October 6, 1875 edition of Island Review about a “neglected, vicious boy” named James Lombard, charged with having stolen fruit from Joy. He was brought up on charges and found guilty, but sentenced was deferred while the court considered sending him “to the Westboro farm until a good opportunity arrives to bind him out during his minority.” Even at that late date, the reform school was considered the best option available, but the earlier reforms to the reform school hadn’t been successful, and throughout the late 1870s and early 1880s, accusations of abuse and mismanagement were reported in the newspapers, fueled by disgruntled former officers and inmates. Another investigating committee, formed in 1877 after a riot among the students that lasted for several days, uncovered the use of straitjackets, “sweat boxes,” and the liberal application of the strap to the bared backs of the residents. Clearly, more reform was needed.
The State Reform School was eventually closed, and other approaches tried, but in the end it was the cost of maintaining the facilities led to their demise. Between 1970 and 1972, the Massachusetts Department of Youth Services closedall seven of the state’s reform schools, and nearly all juvenile offenders were returned to community supervision and treatment.
By the late 1800s, on Nantucket things had begun to quiet down. Reports of outraged citizens and out-of-control youth trail off in the local papers as the nineteenth-century drew to a close, maybe in part because there just weren’t many people here. Nantucket’s population, larger in size than neighboring Martha’s Vineyard (with six towns) since the 1790 census, had peaked at nearly 10,000 in the 1840s, only to decline to 3,727 by the 1880 census, compared to 4,300 on the Vineyard at that time. The revival of the island’s economy with the growing tourism trade is what it took to reverse the decades of urban decay and accompanying social ills that attended it.
