New Film Event
Comes to Nantucket
by Suzanne DaubNantucket has a long history of empowering women. Because the Quaker population here valued equality and education, islanders educated their girls as well as their boys at a time that was not common. Nantucket women were independent, intelligent, curious, creative, and industrious. They were poets, artists, scientists, adventurers, writers, businesswomen, physicians—several of them world-renowned. Nantucket women were in the forefront in the fight for abolition and equal rights. On our island, women could express themselves.
On Saturday, May 25, NEW Moon Fest: Nantucket Empowering Women will premiere in the ‘Sconset Casino. This original film event will showcase the voices of women filmmakers and storytellers from around the world. Co-chairs Lisa Getter, executive director of NCTV, and Lisa P. Soeder, attorney and entrepreneur, worked together to design the event as a rite of spring, an evening of camaraderie with a curated selection of short films that pay tribute to the feminine spirit.
NEW Moon Fest is described on their website—newmoonfest.org—as a way to “celebrate women filmmakers and storytellers contributing to the making of cinema both in front of and behind the camera.”
This film event “will get our community together after a long winter,” explained Getter. It will be an occasion “where they can see friends, catch up, dress up, and see some great films. And we hope it will inspire the audience to make their own films.”
This time of year, added Soeder, “people are excited to see people—in this era of divisiveness, the stories of women need to be seen.”
Soeder, who brought LunaFest® to Nantucket in 2010, also noted that the NEW Moon Fest team believes “in the power of women to come together and to make a significant impact—whether as writers or as filmmakers or as actors who tell untold stories, as a host that raises funds and awareness for a cause, as a researcher who uses those funds towards progress, or as an attendee who leaves with a different perspective. Each is a catalyst for change...We can say that here

Tidying-Up for Spring
by Suzanne Daubrestaurant and bar

Spring cleaning on Nantucket doesn’t just refer to sweeping away dust and cobwebs that have accumulated throughout the house during the winter months. It also includes several cooperative efforts to tidy-up our island roadsides, beaches, nature preserves, and town.
This week, the Nantucket Clean Team starts up again for the 2024 season, with three clean-ups set for Saturday morning, April 27. At 8 am, volunteers will meet at Washington Street Ext. (by the Handlebar) to clean downtown and at the corner of Milestone and Nobadeer Farm roads to clean along Milestone Road. At 9 am that same Saturday, the Clean Team is encouraging volunteers to head to Jetties Beach to join the Cape Cod Surfrider Foundation for a beach cleanup.

The weekend after Daffy Weekend—from 6 am on Saturday, May 4 until 12 noon on Sunday, May 5—the fifth annual Nantucket Litter Derby will add some friendly competition and fun to an outdoor spring cleaning that ends in a celebratory gathering and rewards ceremony at Cisco Brewery on Sunday at 4 pm.
The “woman behind the curtain” for the Nantucket Litter Derby is island resident Leah Mojer, who is quick to credit the town for their help with “day-of operations and set-up.” She defines the mission of this island event as “to raise awareness, foster teamwork, inspire friendly competition, and promote a sens of shared responsibility for keeping the island’s roadsides, beaches, and wild spaces litter-free.”

Just Like Old Times
by Steve “Tuna” TornovishMid April on Nantucket will fluctuate from a spectacular sunny t-shirt only day to one that requires a hooded neoprene jacket just to get to the mailbox. The wind howls, the boats are cancelled, and the rain pounds down in a sideways manner, just to remind you to stay inside. Which is what reasonable Nantucket people will do, of course. But fishermen are not necessarily reasonable people. And this is how I found myself standing in waders in the North Head of the Hummock, hands numb, eyes watering, trying to cast an ultralight pond rig into a 30 knot wind.
My brother Billy was in the same predicament, standing about 20 feet away from me. Billy, recently retired, has taken to fishing to fill up the portions of his day that aren’t involved with chasing his grandson Edward around the house. Billy’s commitment to fishing is impressive, and he has the hardware to back it up. His 2023 run was quite impressive. Bill was a member of Team Bucktail, the three-man squad that won the Spring Sea Run Open tournament in 2023. Billy then won the inaugural August Blues tournament, beating his beloved older brother (yours truly) by a couple of points. He concluded his 2023 beach fishing tournaments with a Top 10 finish in the Inshore Classic, a five week-long event.
I was grateful when Billy asked me to partner with him for this year’s April Freshwater Tournament. This event is sponsored by the Nantucket Angler’s Club and Nantucket Tackle Center. Now in its sixth year, this tournament inspires hibernating anglers to leave our warm, comfortable caves and take to the island’s ponds. This is a multi-species catch-and-release tournament. Anglers measure their best catch of six species: pickerel, white perch, yellow perch, crappie, sunfish and holdover striped bass. The fish are measured, photographed and released. This tournament is fun and surprisingly competitive, often being decided on the last day of April.
Tournaments like this don’t happen without someone stepping up to take on the duties of looking at big batches of fish pictures posed with measuring tapes and transcribing the results. The man behind the curtain for this event is Tim Coggins, the affable and steady manager of Nantucket Tackle Center. Tim tells

For the Love of a Caterpillar
by Dr. Sarah Treanor Bois, PhD Director of Research & Education at the Linda Loring Nature FoundationSpring seems to have finally arrived on the island. The Spring Equinox on March 19 officially marked the start of spring, but we all know not to be suckered in by those arbitrary dates. Traditionally, spring is marked more by the indicators of the changing season. It could be the Daffodil Festival which holds to the calendar date of the last weekend of April. Or it could be something more attuned to the spring climate: blooming forsythia, calling of spring peepers, and migratory birds arriving from their winter stays.
Do you have a favorite sign of spring?
One of my favorite indicators of spring temperatures is the hatch of a familiar insect: the Eastern Tent Caterpillar. This native creature is unique, and I hope to shed some light on an often-maligned species that I think deserves a little respect. Eastern Tent Caterpillars (or ETC) are hairy caterpillars, black with a white stripe down the back, brown and yellow lines along the sides, and a row of oval blue spots on the sides. And they are true harbingers of spring. Instead of being restricted by a calendar date or light cues, the ETC are very sensitive to temperature and hatch out of eggs after several successive days of springlike temperatures.
Because of this sensitivity to early warm temperatures, ETC have been used as indicators of spring and studied to track earlier warming. As we have seen with climate change effects in our region, warmer spring temperatures arriving earlier in the calendar year mean that ETC are hatching earlier than previous long-term averages. At the Linda Loring Nature Foundation, we have been recording ETC hatch date at the LLNF property since 2015. We don’t have enough data yet to note a seasonal shift, but in the last nine years we have seen the hatch date vary annually between April 24 and May 6. As of this writing (April 21), there still aren’t any caterpillars to be found, but my guess is any day now!
Eastern tent caterpillars (Malacosoma americanum) are native to Nantucket

AN ISLAND VIEW:
Keep Nantucket More than a Beach Hotel
essay by Robert P. BarsantiYou can rent a house on Milk Street for $45,000 a week. For that money, you could buy, and own, a Camaro or a Mustang or a BMW 2 series. But if you were to go to a realtor and plunk your money down to rent this house on Milk Street, you could spend a week with three queen beds, a pool (of course), and “one of the best and most fun home bars on the island” in case you grow tired of paying $19 for a Negroni among the common people who spend their cash on sports cars.
But you would be too late. The house is fully rented for the summer, to the tune of about $500,000.
With Articles 59 and 60 looming at Nantucket Town Meeting on May 7, and yard signs threatening our jobs, I took a internet cruise through the rental properties on a realtor’s web page. I am as ignorant of island real estate as an oyster is of the craters on the moon. In the space of a jaw-dropping half-hour, I saw hundreds of island properties for rent ranging from $5,000 to $60,000 a week. I’m sure my friends in the needlepoint belts and seersucker jackets have a more precise number for the median and average rents. My Oyster guess is around $25,000 a week.
Our friends on Milk Street have a house in Naples, Florida that has a similar bar, decorated in the signature Hermes Orange that matched the lady’s scarf. While the article in the Wall Street Journal didn’t mention it, I don’t believe they own a scallop rake, a paint-stained ladder, or work shoes.
One island realtor lists hundred of these rentals. I have not done an exhaustive analysis, but I would guess there are many hundreds—perhaps as many as two thousand—of these rental properties on-island. I would be willing to bet that perhaps only a hundred or so are islanders with a collection of prize work-shirts in their closets.
Each of these houses is likely an oil well, pumping sweet crude into the bank accounts of off-island investors and billionaires. They are drinking our milkshake. Their owners don’t line up for the Fourth of July water fight, they don’t visit the St. Paul’s Fair, and they don’t shop at the Hospital Thrift Shop. The owners don’t give out candy at Halloween, they don’t meet the President at Murray’s on Thanksgiving, and they don’t go to winter Paint Nights.
When I think of the Short Term Rentals articles being considered at Town Meeting, I am thinking of this Milk Street house and the $500,000 rent that briefly touched the island before arriving in a Florida bank.
When the Milk Street opportunity arose, an agent wearing pink and green sporting a Breitling timepiece didn’t make the potential home owners aware of the good schools or the child-friendly yard and didn’t think of principal residences or accessory use. No, the agent pointed out the rental history and the trend lines for the island. Milk Street is a singular location near town, with a property awaiting a signature decor. It promised a remarkable return on investment for the right buyer.
The agent was right: it will make $500,000 this summer.
As the lawn signs indicate, the Milk Street property, along with the other mul-

Tidying-Up for Spring
from page 4
This event was scheduled during early April during the first four years it was held, but the date was moved to May for 2024, Leah explained, because “the beginning of April is often very stormy” here, plus several holidays in April can interfere with participation.
The Litter Derby is held across two days, Mojer explained, to give it a “builtin rain date. Last year, it poured all day on one of the days…[teams] don’t have to do it for two days, but if you are feeling competitive you might want to do both…And there’s something about it that is addicting when you can see your positive effect on the environment.”
Teams can have up to six individuals and are responsible for their own supplies (gloves, grabbers, and trash bags). They also choose what areas of Nantucket they want to tidy-up. Last year 22 teams competed. At press time, the 2024 signup has already exceeded 20 teams: several repeat competitors and many new teams. “Two are fifth-year teams, and there are a couple of four-year teams” [signed up for 2024], Mojer said. Sign-up is free and open through May 3 at nantucketlitterderby.com.
After 1 pm on Sunday, May 5, trash collection drop-off will be held at the Nantucket Waste Facility. Volunteers will be available to help sort, and there’s usually music during the weigh-in.
To date, Litter Derby teams have removed from our environment 64,000 pounds of litter! During past years during this event, teams have wrestled a variety of items—large and small, heavy and light—out of the environment. For safety reasons, weight of items picked up for this event are capped at 50 pounds.
At 4 pm on Sunday, Litter Derby teams and organizers will gather at Cisco Brewers. First place winners get a $1,000 cash prize, and second- and third-place prizes will also be awarded.
“If you going to pick up trash for just one day: do it this day because Town employees are devoting their day off—a Sunday—for this to be super-efficient,” Mojer said. “The Town does it for everyone’s benefit…With everyone working together, a lot gets done…it’s very efficient.”

me that Monday mornings in April are the toughest as he sorts through the onslaught of weekend catch submissions. In true old-school fashion, Tim updates the tournament leaderboard on a whiteboard leaned against the door of Nantucket Tackle. Tim joins Rafael Osona (Spring Sea Run Opener), Dr. Greg Chotkowski (August Blues), and Jeffrey Heyer (Nantucket Inshore Classic) in the club of folks who do the hard work to make Nantucket fishing tournaments go smoothly. Thanks to you all!
Our friend Chuck Duce (cover photo) had joined Brother Bill and me on the blustery day in the North Head of the Hummock. It made me smile to think that Chuck, Billy, and I have been fishing buddies for about 50 years now. Chuck was part of our Hooper Farm Road neighborhood crew who would gather on Saturday mornings (after cartoons, cereal, and professional wrestling on channels 38 and 56, of course) and hike about a half mile to Miacomet Pond. We spent some of the best days of our childhoods tossing worms and bobbers, Red Devil spoons and Roostertail spinners at the perch and pickerel, listening to Red Sox games on transistor radios. Those were days that the three of us remember fondly.
Chuck is a mason by trade and his hands are solid evidence of his years in the concrete business. He’s a quiet man but one who says what he means. Chuck told me “The people that I see when I’m walking my dog in the woods, when I’m standing in a pond or walking the beach at night looking for stripers—those are the ones I want to be around.” We talked about the changes on the island. We discussed what might be the straw that would make us leave (hint: the day that we can’t access our favorite beach fishing spots will be the day that some realtor’s phone will be ringing). And, of course, we talked about old times.
“I still have Jimmy Haley’s fishing rod in my basement. He left it at my house the last day that we had gone to Miacomet together.” Jimmy left the island to attend college and didn’t return to Nantucket. Jim, if you’re reading this, Chuck, Billy, and I are ready for you to visit and hit the ponds again!
Chuck had the formula for catching big crappie that day. These beautiful fish, a freshwater staple across the country, were not around when we were kids. Some unconfirmed research told me that a man named David Goodman, an avid pond

and surf fisherman, got together with another guy (who may or may not have owned a local tackle shop) and decided to stock some of these aggressive panfish into the local freshwater ponds. David passed on some years back, but if he was truly responsible for bringing crappie to Nantucket, I tip my fishing cap to him (as well as to his alleged unnamed co-conspirator). Crappie are a blast to catch. They’ve made for a quantum improvement in the local freshwater fishing.
My homecoming week of pond fishing was not quite over. Mike Ramos, the master plumber who I spend a lot of time with during the spring and fall seasons, had the itch to get out and fish. He compiled his waders and pond rods, and the two of us headed to Maxy’s Pond after a long day of turning on water for millionaires (and the odd billionaire, I suppose). Mike and I go way back. We were

schoolmates from our days in kindergarten at the Coffin School. We were in Boy Scouts together, until an overzealous scoutmaster threatened to make us go on a five-mile punishment hike—Mike and I had opted to hike a mile or so back home instead, and that was the end of that.
Joining us for this after-work adventure was our longtime friend Norman Moore. The three of us were teammates on a fairly mediocre Nantucket Whalers football team in 1979. Norman was a team captain and wild man middle linebacker. Mike was a guard, fast and strong like a guard must be. I was mostly an undersized benchwarmer. And here we were, all these years later, standing in a pond together on a cold April afternoon.
The talk on our fishing trips these days is centered on more age-appropriate topics, I suppose: upcoming medical appointments, things our kids are doing that we’re proud of, and, of course, the many good times that we have shared over the years. Yeah, a couple of fish were caught. Norman’s Red Devil enticed a fairly good sized pickerel. Mike’s Roostertail spinner yielded a smaller one that escaped a photo op by jumping free at the last minute.
But the afternoon was not really about fishing. No, not at all. It was about the deep bonds that we have forged over all these years. It was about the encouragement and support that we give to each other when the other guy is in troubled waters. It was about the laughs shared as we look back at so many years of cars and girls and football games from our past. Ultimately, it was about hope. Hope that we can continue to get together in good health as we navigate our sixties. Hope that most of our challenges and heartbreaks are in the rearview mirror. Hope that the island of Nantucket can cling to some semblance of community as the pace gets faster and the money gets bigger. And hope that new generations will have impromptu reunions like this and, perhaps, catch a few fish.

and sometimes get a bad rap because they are confused with the invasive Spongy Moth caterpillar. Our native ETC, however, feed primarily on black cherry trees (Prunus serotina) and rarely kill a tree. As a spring species, ETC prefer young fresh leaves. In fact, the timing of ETC hatch has evolved to match the spring leaf-out of its host plant, though warmer, earlier springtime temperatures may be altering this relationship. ETC are quick to respond to warmer temps by hatching earlier, tracking the warm spring. Black cherries, on the other hand, have been shown to be slower to respond to early springtime temperatures and may not have enough leaves available for the young, hungry caterpillars to feast upon.
More research over time will help us learn more about this relationship and whether an ecological mis-match could affect ETC populations here on Nantucket or elsewhere across their range.
ETC actually spend a majority of their life (almost 75%) as an egg. The eggs that are readying to hatch this spring were actually laid by their parent last July! The tough egg masses contain about 150-200 small, white eggs which are covered with a shiny, black varnish-like material encircling small branches. The egg mass lasts through wind, rain, snow, sleet, hurricanes—you name it. As warmer temperatures arrive in March and April, the black coating begins to disintegrate like old insulation, leaving the eggs more exposed.
After hatching, the tiny black caterpillars will all huddle together on a branch to keep warm and absorb sunlight.
Many of us know that spring in New England, and certainly on Nantucket, is highly variable. One day you’re wearing short sleeves and basking in the sunshine and the next you’re pulling your parka back out and turning on the heat. This is where the genius of the tent caterpillar engineering comes in. Since they hatch out so early in the season, they are also susceptible to these temperature swings. Huddling together with your brothers and sisters only keeps you so warm. From the first few days of hatching, the caterpillars work together to build a silken tent with thread they produce. These “tents” are made with innumerable silken strands, usually in the crotches of branches in their host trees. The silken strands make many layers within the tent, which gets bigger as the caterpillars continue
For the Love of a Caterpillar
from page 19
to add layers. During any cold, hot, rainy, or otherwise unfavorable weather conditions, the caterpillars retreat into the tent. They can thermoregulate by going deeper into the tent or hanging out near the surface layers.
They are such social creatures. Research has shown that caterpillars from two or more egg masses may unite to form one large colony. They do this even if the egg masses are unrelated. In addition to the tent construction and communal living, they help each other find food. Using pheromones and silken threads, the ETC will leave a trail to the fresh young leaves. When that resource is depleted, the silk is snipped off to break the route, and a new path is created.
As the ETC feed on foliage, they increase the size of the tent or web until it is a foot or more in length. In 4 to 6 weeks, the caterpillars are full grown and 2 to 2-1/2 inches long. At this point, the caterpillars will wander off solo to pupate in a cocoon. We usually find them in the leaf litter on the ground in a small silken cocoon where they remain for 3-4 weeks, emerging as an adult moth sometime in July. The adult moth is small, reddish-brown with two pale stripes running diagonally across each forewing. Moths are only around for about 5 days. In that time they mate, and females will lay eggs on small branches of our native black cherry trees. They usually lay the eggs closer to the ends of branches where the future hatchlings will be more likely to find fresh leaves to eat. And the cycle begins again with this generation of eggs lying in wait from July until the next spring when warm temperatures again signal for them to emerge.
Since the ETC on Nantucket haven’t hatched yet, we don’t know for sure if 2024 will be a boom or bust year for the caterpillars. The last big boom year, with caterpillars found in large amounts across the island feasting on all manner of species, was in 2015. The boom and bust cycles last about 10 years, so we are close to “due” for another boom if climatic conditions cooperate. Based on the number of egg masses I’ve seen on the black cherry trees at the Linda Loring Nature Foundation property, I think we are in an upswing with 2025 or 2026 as the next big year. A boom year for caterpillars also means a caterpillar buffet for many species of birds who readily eat the ETC. And the caterpillar frass (aka poop) also serves to fertilize surrounding vegetation.
Hopefully now, instead of spraying them with insecticide or otherwise cursing them, we can all appreciate these ecosystem engineers! Eastern tent caterpillars are a true sign of our Nantucket spring. Keep an eye out for the Linda Loring Nature Foundation social media to learn when our ETC eggs hatch for 2024.
More than a Beach Hotel

titude of rental properties on-island, bring in jobs for landscapers, pool cleaners, caterers, and other service people. The owners surely pay their taxes. But, I would bet that of the paychecks handed out for the care and maintenance of “one of the most fun home bars” on-island, very few stop in any of the on-island banks (which are really off-island banks). That money buys a sandwich, gets a beer or two, then gets on the boat.
On Nantucket, we look backward into a glorious past. The rental houses we remember had jigsaw puzzles with missing pieces, slightly mildewed beach towels, and wobbly chairs. Families would come over for a week, bring a freezer chest of prepared meals and a station wagon decorated in bicycles. They would drag the kids downtown for ice cream, go out to Le Languedoc for a fancy meal, and buy everyone t-shirts to cover the sunburn. That island ended around the time the Skipper closed.
The folks with the yard signs rightly point out that we can’t go back into the past, and they are correct. However, we need to be clear as day about the present and the anticipated, non-hurricane, future. We live on Hilton Head. Nantucket has become a full-service island resort: the Ritz on a Sandbar. All of us who work here are the staff. We check people in, clean the rooms, life-guard the pool, fix the roof, mow the lawns, and staff the shop. We still own few of the inns and shops. We don’t own the banks, the utilities, the hotels. We just work here.
We can’t go back because we don’t have the same power anymore. We gave up our island for pocket change. The only difference between islanders and the workmen on the Gray Lady is that we haven’t sold our homes yet. If you want to meet a cross-section of Whaler alumni, hand out coffee and donuts on Straight Wharf for the morning boat. Right now, the future needs a commuter book.
Judge Vhay gave us an opportunity to reclaim the oil wells. If we want our children to have homes, lives, and jobs on-island, we need to use the Judge’s ruling to affect some serious changes. I hope that island voters and the Select Board can close the door and use that leverage to make the island something more than a hotel on the beach.

BEACH SAFETY
•Learn to swim. If you can’t swim an overhead stroke for at least 15 minutes you should not be in the ocean. •Never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy, and swim near a lifeguard whenever possible. •Stay out of the “surf zone” where the waves break at the shoreline. Waves are at their greatest force here, and even a small wave can lift you up and throw you headfirst into the sand. •Never run from the beach into the water and dive headfirst into the waves. Sandbars that cannot be seen from the surface may be present and/or the water may be too shallow. •Don’t jump or dive into the water from a pier or rock jetty. From a pier or jetty, water appears much deeper than it really is. What looks like 10 or 20 feet of water may only be 2 to 3 feet deep. Diving in could be fatal. The same applies for jumping headfirst into the ocean or a wave from a surfboard – don’t do it! It’s not a risk worth taking. •If you are body surfing or boogie boarding, always keep your arms out in front of you to protect your head and neck. •A rip current will pull you away from the shore, but it will not pull you under. If you’re caught in a rip current, do not swim toward the shore! Instead, swim parallel to the shore, until you’re out of the rip current. Then, swim in to shore. •Never drink alcohol or use drugs at the beach. It clouds your ability to make wise decisions, and that could be fatal! •Take direction from lifeguards at all times.

on our island because we have choices and opportunities that make change possible. We are the lucky ones.”
NEW Moon Fest will begin at 5 pm with a festive gathering featuring food, beverages, live music, and a silent auction. When the lights go down, between six and ten short films will be shown. At press time, the selection committee is still finalizing the program, but they’ve revealed that there will be a range of topics and the program will include live action narrative, documentary, and animated films. After the screenings, the audience may enjoy desserts and mingle as they discuss what they watched.
Since November 15, 2023, more than 100 original short films from Canada, Argentina, Italy, Portugal, Iran, Russia, Rwanda, Greece, South Africa, Australia, Mexico, France, Afghanistan, the United Kingdom, Germany, Sweden, and 12 different states in the US have been submitted to NEW Moon Fest for consideration. Of those submissions, about ten percent were animated. The 35 people tasked with selecting which films will be shown at NEW Moon Fest 2024 brought different backgrounds and insights to the process, ensuring the films chosen are of high quality in subject matter and production. “It’s been a joy to see everyone come together [to accomplish this], though it was difficult to limit the number of films so we can stay within time constraints,” said Soeder.
“The films are a tribute to the women before us and those who walk with us and come after us. They are powerful, empathetic...stories told with honesty and integrity that affect real people; stories of strength and resilience. The films are inspirational,” Soeder commented.
Laurels will be awarded to filmmakers for the Most Empowering Film, Best Director, Most Empowering Actor, Best Cinematography, Most Empowering Screenplay, Most Empowering Animation, and a Wild Woman Award. Members of the audience will have a chance to vote for their favorite film, which will be give the peoples’ choice laurel, called The Grey Lady Award.
Soeder expressed hope that attendees “will immerse themselves in the films and emerge with a slightly changed perspective...put themselves in the shoes of others, and come closer to understanding what others are going through.”
“I hope [our audience] feels something from each film: inspiration, empathy, courage...” Getter added. This is a celebration meant to “spotlight the strength of women’s voices. We are confident that the future of NEW Moon Fest will contribute to NCTV’s overarching vision of fostering quality programming that engages, entertains, and connects our island community.”
Tickets to the 2024 NEW Moon Fest are available at newmoonfest.org for $125: admission includes one drink ticket and a swag bag. On the website page for ticket purchases, there is also an option to donate a ticket to someone who could otherwise not buy one and an option to donate to the event.
Contributions will ensure the growth and longevity of NCTV's NEW Moon Fest: Nantucket Empowering Women. A portion of these funds will go to support and empower women/individuals served at A Safe Place.
