Hydrangeas Bring Vibrant Color to Nantucket by Cara Godlesky

Nantucket’s is famous for its grey shingled houses hidden by privet hedges, fragrant roses climbing up the sides of homes, and hydrangeas flowering in front yards. The hydrangea’s blooming heads of flowers are an iconic look for our island community. However, Nantucketers must thank another group of islanders for the presence of these notable flowers. Over 2,300 miles away from Nantucket sits another group of Atlantic islands, the Azores. The Azores are a chain of volcanic islands with hydrangeas growing naturally across the land. Roughly 948 miles off the coast of Portugal, the island chain is an ocean crossroad,

which became an important place for Nantucket’s whaling industry. It was essential stop during long voyages to restock supplies and even pick up crew members. The Azores are mountainous and home to fertile soil from volcanic eruptions. However, the islands have limited agricultural space to support the residents. While hydrangeas aren't native to the Azores, historians believe the plant arrived in the U.S. courtesy of immigrants from the Azores. In the mid-1900s, nearly a quarter of a million Azoreans (many of them fishermen) came to U.S. cities in Rhode Island and southeastern continued on page 59...

A Summer Spectacle On Sunday, August 21, the eagerly anticipated Rainbow Parade will sail around Brant Point, preceeding Nantucket’s 50th Annual Opera House Cup Regatta. It’s typical for twenty or more of these little boats to participate in the parade. Some years ago, the Parade date fell on a stormy day, complete with 25-miles-per-hour winds. Still, one stalwart sailor mustered courage and strength, getting her miniature sailboat out on the water. Since the mid 1800s, the catboat has been a favorite on Nantucket for leisure sailing and for teaching children how to sail. When the Nantucket Yacht Club was founded in 1906, they organized races and encouraged members to buy boats of the same design to eliminate the need for handicapping. In 1910, the club commissioned the design of a 13-foot catboat as a “onedesign” for racing. In 1921, the Yacht Club under Commodore Henry Lang and Vice Commodore Clarence Gennett commissioned a one-design fleet of 16-foot catboats for young members. According to historian Michael Harrison, “it was Gennett’s idea that the boats wear sails of different colors to distinguish them, and the lively effect this created immediately led to the name “Rainbow Fleet.” These 16-foot catboats had issues of maintenance and some difficulties in handling when running before the wind. “Now these big Rainbows were lovely, very graceful looking,” reminisced the late Helen Wilson Sherman in a past interview, “but there was no ‘body’ in the stem, so they were quite tippy; they heeled easily in the wind.” In 1927, smaller, lighter catboats were ordered. These Beetle Cats (designed and built by the Beetle Company in New Bedford) were easy for children to handle and very popular throughout New England. Harrison states in an article: “The new “Little Rainbows” formed a class of their own sailed entirely by children. A racing report from July 1927 notes, The Little 20 nantucket HOME

Rainbow Fleet has proved itself a fine class and everyone is proud and happy. Master Cutler won on Wednesday, sailing a fine race and the whole fleet congratulates him. Miss Smith had hard luck with her tiller. Miss Gennett and her brother made a gallant fight but succeeded in coming in second. Miss Helen Wilson won an easy third and hasn’t got over the thrill yet. The poor old Rear Commodore hit a shoal and never came in at all. A photograph taken by H. Marshall Gardiner in the late 1920s and released as a postcard in 1930 inspired the concept of a Rainbow Parade. The artistic piece shows ten Rainbows—green, deep yellow, red, old rose, blue, light yellow, and tan—rounding Brant Point. How were the boats so neatly lined up? The boats were actually interconnected and the photographer, along with Vice Commodore Strong, chose a day when waters were very calm. “It was an absolutely perfect day for it. When Marshall Gardiner took his picture,” the late Helen Wilson Sherman explained, “color photography hadn’t really been invented, so the picture was black and white…and when they tinted it, they didn’t know what color the sails were, and mine came out orange instead of green... I was at the head of the parade...everybody’s boat was tied to mine and Byron Coffin towed the 13 boats in the Yacht Club launch—we weren’t sailing. It was a dead calm. And of course all the little sails were straight, and they weren’t fluttering or anything.” Over the decades, there has been casual parading of the Rainbow Fleet. It wasn’t until Alan Newhouse, NCS Founder, came along in the 1980s that the Parade became formalized as an event within the Opera House Cup. He brought the whole Rainbow class of boat back to life. It had almost disappeared on Nantucket in the late 70s. Newhouse sought Parade participants in a creative continued on page 58...

manner several weeks before each year’s event. Having assembled zipblock bags containing stones for weight and notes for explaining the date and time of the Rainbow Fleet Parade, Alan deposited his messages in every Rainbow he saw in the harbor. Today, the zipblock bag messages are still dropped into boats. The small gesture is representative of inclusiveness. Traditions like these characterize the Rainbow Fleet Parade. During the Rainbow Parade, it’s common for different generations to be sailing in these boats: young kids to grandparents. Many of the Rainbows have been passed from generation to generation. Among the families to originally own the boats were the Pagons, Connells, Bollings, Lovelaces, Sawyers, Churches, Heckers, and Manvilles. Today, more families are active in the Rainbow Fleet Parade. The Rainbow Parade has a huge following, drawing hundreds to Brant Point to watch and photograph the colorful event. The Parade begins at 9:40 am, but it’s best to arrive early. Park in town and walk to the beach, as parking is very limited. Watching the Rainbow Parade and then the elegant wooden sailboats head out of the harbor on Opera House Cup race day is a beautiful summer spectacle and a Nantucket tradition.

Hydrangeas continued from page 11

Massachusetts seeking better living conditions. By 1850, there was 67 Azoreans living on Nantucket according to an entry in “The Other Islanders” by Frances Ruley Karttunen. The Azoreans had a knack for farming, gardening, and agriculture. Many of them aspired to become farmers. The Azoreans love of decoration and flower gardens influenced the landscaped homes that we see on present day Nantucket. Karttunen’s book states that photographs of 19th century homes on Nantucket do not show the strong presence of hydrangeas visible today. But as the Azoreans came and made Nantucket their home, their decorations and hydrangeas followed. Now, hydrangeas are a staple for Nantucket’s landscapes. Our climate on the Grey Lady is similar to that in the Azores and provides optimal conditions for hydrangeas to flourish. Both islands have temperate, oceanic climates with without severe winters and summer temperatures that seldom rise above 85. Hydrangeas have a high transpiration rate, meaning the process which moisture leaves the pores of the plants is much quicker for these plants. This means that hydrangeas do not thrive in conditions of high heat, norcontinued on page 60...

Hydrangeas continued from page 59

mally not an issue for the plants located on Nantucket and the Azores. If you’d like to add hydrangeas to your home, there are a few methods of care and planting that yield the best results. For the best possible outcome for hydrangeas, plant the flowers during late spring and early June. When the plants are put in the ground too late, they are subjected to fall and winter storms without having proper root systems in place. This could lead to failure in the transplant. Hydrangeas, although fairly resilient, prefer a slightly shaded area away from direct sunlight. They will tolerate afternoon sun and heat but they will thrive if planted on the cooler northern or eastern orientations of a home. In general, all varieties of the hydrangeas seem to grow well on Nantucket. The species of hydrangeas on Nantucket seem to be endless. With plant breeding a common practice, there are many different flowers available. The main two varieties on island feature round, mopheads and flat, lace cap flowers. However, there are others whose flower heads are shaped like pinecones and pom-poms. One remarkable feature of certain hydrangeas is their ability to change flower colors depending on the pH level of the soil. The more basic the soil, the pinker the flower; hydrangeas planted in soil that is more acidic will be blue. However, certain hydrangeas, especially those with pink and white flowers, may not be affected by the soil conditions. The sky-blue hydrangeas are the best candidates to change colors. After a pH test is done on the soil, gardeners can determine if the soil is basic or acidic. To change the color, get a bag of powdered of aluminum sulfate. Sprinkle the powder onto the surrounding soil of the hydrangea before the buds of the flowers develop. The water then must take the sediments into the soil and then can alter the coloration of the flowers. Next time you are out strolling the streets of Nantucket, take a minute to stop and admire some of the hidden side gardens and various colors of hydrangeas. photo by Kathy Wixted

Mystery of the Meridian Stones There are two stone markers in downtown Nantucket: one next to the Pacific National Bank where Fair Street intersects Main that is inscribed “Northern Extremity of the Town’s Meridian Line”; the other on Fair Street near the Quaker Meeting House that is inscribed with the words “Southern Extremity of the Town’s Meridian Line.” The stones date back to 1840 and have been a standing mystery since the 20th century. They do not mark the “extremities” of the Town of Nantucket as the inscriptions seem to imply. The true purpose of the stones was forgotton by most until 2002, when a team of Nantucket Maria Mitchell Association researchers determined their purpose. One theory of the stones’ original purpose was they were used for rating chronometers (accurately timed clocks taken aboard ships to help determine longitude while out at sea) for whaling ships. Guides giving walking tours of downtown Nantucket repeated a number of tales about their meaning. So what are they actually? A meridian line is a line that indicates, “true north”

(where the North Pole is geographically), as opposed to “magnetic north,” which is aligned with the Earth’s magnetic field. If you were to use a compass –or pull out your smartphone and open your compass app –that compass (digital or physical) would show you magnetic north. The stones were measured and placed accordingly to create a line that demarcates true north. The two stones were erected by island Quaker William Mitchell, aschoolmaster and surveyor on Nantucket during the early 1800s. He was also Nantucket’s pre-eminent astronomer. In 1847, his daughter Maria discovered a comet for which she was awarded a gold medal from the King of Denmark and earned the title of the first American woman astronomer. Maria went on to become an internationally known scientist and educator: she became Professor Astronomy at Vassar. These stones were important for surveying work and were among the first established in the United States—well before an act of Congress required continued on page 80...

Meridian Stones continued from page 65

states to establish them. Knowing the angle between the stones was important for surveyors and mapmakers who needed to translate between their compass readings and directions on a map. Or, perhaps in the case of William Mitchell, creating exact property lines and translating between both cardinal and magnetic directions to keep the housing and land measurements consistent. A team of Maria Mitchell Association researchers began the search for the truth about these mysterious stones. They found public documents from 1840 Nantucket Town Meetings, which indicated that the stones were most likely instruments for public use. The stones have thin lines, which indicated to scientists that the stones might have been used for measuring, and could be “compass stones.” The MMA team took measurements of the meridian stones through two different methods, and both concluded that the stones were slightly misaligned, which was a curious discovery from a technical observer such as William Mitchell. From public records and documents, measurements, and research, the Maria Mitchell team concluded that the south stone had been removed and replaced for construction and paving projects on two separate occasions. These moves most likely account for the misalign-

ment to true north. The meridian stones are historical artifacts, island landmarks, and they serve as a symbolic monument of astronomical and geographic advances in the early 1800s. They are easy to pass by without noticing. But according to MMA Observatory Director Emeritus Vladimir Strenitski: “Meridian markers are reminders of an important period in the history of Western civilization, during which people were learning how to precisely measure the local territory and, eventually, the whole planet.” Look for the meridian stones the next time you are downtown.
