Standing up for the North Atlantic Right Whale by Pam Murphy
For more than 45 years Jean Rioux has advocated for the North Atlantic Right Whale and legislation to protect it. She has spent countless summers set up day and night on Main Street or Federal Street offering education, facts, and ways to help. Jean has collected thousands of signatures and shared her passion with each person signing. When COVID-19 struck the island last year, Jean was undeterred. Having been hunted nearly to extinction by the 1890s, North Atlantic Right Whales have seen their population drop in recent years from just 400 to less than 366 with fewer than 100 breeding aged females. Many of these potential mothers are in such poor body condition from stresses such as ship noise and entanglement that they are infertile. No longer hunted, entanglements in fishing gear (more Jean Rioux by Pam Murphy than 80% of the population has been entangled at least once) and vessel strikes are the leading cause of death today. Known as the “urban whale,” Right Whales feed in the same areas that shipping lanes transect, leading to attempts to move lanes and lower speeds when whales are present. Canada and the US both have strong movements to work with the fishing industry to do everything

The Results Are In by Dr. Sarah Treanor Bois
Director of Research & Education at the Linda Loring Nature Foundation The results of the 2021 Nantucket Land Council and Linda Loring Nature Foundation BioBlitz are in and we’re sharing some highlights and interesting observations from this highly successful exploration of nature on Nantucket! For those who didn’t read the earlier article (yesterdaysisland.com/take-the2021-bioblitz-challenge/), a BioBliz is basically a mad dash in a specified area to catalog as many species as possible. The 2021 NLC/LLNF BioBlitz sought to document the biodiversity of Nantucket during the month of July—a perfect month for a BioBlitz. July being the peak of the growing season, there were all sorts of plants blooming, fruiting, and just growing in the summer sunshine. Nestling birds were fledging, turtles were nesting, and the marine life was popping! There was so much to see and record. The 2021 BioBlitz far surpassed the original goals set forth by the Nantucket Land Council. They had hoped for 1,000 observations and 500 species. What they got in the end were 2,138 observations of some 860 species thanks to 111 volunteer participants! Of those 2,000 observations, just about half are Research Grade. That means that the identification has been confirmed by at least one other person. These are the records that researchers use to investigate patterns of species distributions, among other things. Throughout the month of July, organizers kept tabs on the leaderboards: both the participants and the species. For species, it looked like common milkweed would be the winner. Halfway through the month, however, the showier species started to bloom. Orange blossoms like wood lilies and butterfly milkweed garnered lots of attention, being so bright amidst the green foliage. In the end, the common yarrow (Achillea millefolium) eked in a win with one more observation than either common milkweed or the ever-present St. John’s wort. The flattopped, white blossoms of the common yarrow may not be as showy as others, but you can find it almost anywhere on Nantucket in mid-summer. In terms of observers, Chase Mathey from the Nantucket Conservation Foundation was the leader with a whopping 226 species. The runners-up each had 146, so Chase really outdid us all. Rudy Montez was our top “non-professional” observer with 120 species—amazing contributions helping us catalog nature on Nantucket this summer. The NLC/LLNF BioBlitz is about more than just numbers. As Helen Weeks, NLC Board Member and Chair of NLC Associates, put it: “The Land Council was excited to use the July BioBlitz to both honor and celebrate our mission. Through exploring together but apart, we are able to create curiosity, foster deeper understanding, and establish a connection with both the natural world and within the local naturalist community.” For some participants, using iNaturalist and contributing this type of information were completely new. And that was one of the goals of the BioBlitz: to help people learn more about the natural world around them. “The BioBlitz prompted me to look with fresh eyes at what I see every day, and I learned the names of some of the plants that I hadn’t ID’d before, beyond labelling them a “weed.” After the initial couple of forays around the yard, I started thinking about how to find more species. I started turning over rocks and staring at the sky. I continued on page 20

Culture Clash
Sail Endeavor
by Robert P. Barsanti The big red sign said “Stop! Don’t come in! Stay Outside!” So she came in. Lily was picking up sandwiches and drinks and cookies. Lily was wearing a darling beach coverup with tassels and little silvery beads. Her sandals didn’t exactly match, but they didn’t clash either. They were cute. And she was receiving a text. Lily didn’t deserve to get yelled at. She thought. Yet, she did get yelled at. A full throated bellow sent her back into the mass of humanity she had been separating herself from. And, as she gathered her umbrage, she was advanced on and forced outside the door. Standing in the parking lot, the crowd who were also waiting for their sandwiches to be delivered, did not rise to her defense. Instead, Lily stood in tears and waited for some apology and some acknowledgment that this was just not the way you treated people. She couldn’t understand it. This is not the way she got treated. Which is, unfortunately, a shame, because if Lily was treated this way, as a regular sign reading person out on the street, she may have been able to avoid a bellowing. Yet, Lily got apologized to. Her pardon was begged. Her understanding was required. Lily gave her money, she received her lunch, and she was able to keep her appointments at the club. Thankfully, her Yelp Review remains unwritten. For many, reality is an arrangement to be negotiated. At the Platinum level, the concierge will advise reality on your needs and expectations. In August, the flashing hazard lights on the Discovery suggest that she will only be a minute so we might as well wait. The manager is sure to find the correct brand of Soy Milk after he has been summoned. For the most part, this intersection between privilege and reality is the source of island humor and winter stories. On most sunny days, you can find this intersection at Nobadeer Beach, where the wisdom of Fairfield Connecticut’s Finest Auto Salesmen come into fully inflated contact with the leftovers of the Great Wisconsin Glacier. Hilarity ensues. Not that islanders are immune from getting stuck up to their axles in reality. For us, our failures of imagination are more parochial and permanent. We like to believe that Someone Else, either an institution or an individual, will protect us from the consequences of our foolishness. We make zoning decisions for the cash and forget about the people who need to live here who can’t be paid in Hedge Fund dollars. We have spent decades believing that if you worked harder, you could buy a house. So now, anyone who wasn’t born with a house or a trust fund, must commute around Brant Point in order to work here. Our hospital, our school, our police, and the rest of our town departments go begging for passionate, qualified, and homeless workers. If only the surgeon wasn’t so lazy and could work a side job in masonry, he could stay. As an entire island, we suffer from a failure of empathy. We want everyone to think like us instead of trying to think like everyone else. We don’t want to stand in anyone else’s shoes, we want them in ours. If everyone could stand in our shoes, they would know how difficult it is to drive across Nobadeer and they would stop laughing. We believe in ourselves, fully, and can’t stand when everyone on the beach doesn’t believe in us as well. Vroom, vroom. If we were stuck in any other August, the culture clash would just produce eye-rolls, amusement, and the occasional bellow. But this August, like the last one, has grown sideways and it doesn’t seem to be growing back. It is one thing to send your concierge to negotiate with the reality of fog, sand, or the stock of Soy Milk at the supermarket. It is quite another to expect that germs and pandemics can be negotiated with.

Trunk Shows Bring One-of-a-Kind Pieces to Old South Wharf
Kathleen A. Duncombe is known for her expertise in art and collections. An artist herself, she has taught and mentored many on Nantucket. This season she is bringing back a tradition of trunk shows to Old South Wharf, where she runs Made on Nantucket, a shop featuring paintings, prints, photography, jewelry, art glass, decorative items, and apparel made by dozens of island artists and artisans. In addition, Kathleen also spotlights pre-owned art and jewelry that she sells for clients who wish to reduce their collections. To showcase these items, she is hosting outdoor Sunday Trunk Shows on the Wharf. Made on Nantucket’s first 2021 Trunk Show is being held this Sunday, August 22 from 12 noon to 5pm, and will feature a stunning selection of Huichol art that includes framed and unframed pieces, along with ceramics and sculptural items from the same collection. Kathleen’s knowledge of Huichol art comes from collecting it herself during past trips to Mexico. “I fell in love with the images and the spiritual nature of the art—it’s mystical and visionary—I have a huge collection myself at home,” she explained. “I saw them meticulously making the pieces in Mexico...they are beautiful connections to nature, Earth, and spirit.” The Huichol (Wixáritari in their native language) are an indigenous group from the Sierra Madre Occidental in the states of Jalisco, Nayarit, Durango, and Zacatecas, Mexico. Recognized globally for intricate, brilliantly colorful, and spiritually significant folk art they create these pieces by setting beads or fiber into beeswax on wood. The artistic techniques and designs have been passed down through generations and brings the spirit world to life. Most Huichol art features symbols, animals, and designs that have had significance to the Wixáritari peocontinued on page 22

New Exhibit Opening at Hostetler Gallery
California based fine artist, Donna Isham returns to Nantucket for her selective exhibition titled SHE: UnDaunted opening this Saturday, August 21 at the Hostetler Gallery, 42 Centre Street. The selected exhibit will feature Donna Isham’s thought provoking female-centric figurative series along with her emotive abstract works that are naked, raw, and bold. SHE: UnDaunted features paintings that explore the essence of Isham’s work, contexProtect Me from the World, Mama 48”x48” tualizing the courage, strength, and passion of the female form. It reflects the power and beauty of what it means to be a woman. Isham states, “This series embraces the ever changing ideals of female beauty and potential. We can no longer be diminished, as women, as a part of humanity, but rather embrace the strength of what it means to be a woman, the power and compassion to celebrate diversity and individuality. Strength follows passion. I hope to honor that beauty.” Donna Isham works with live models and utilizes a range of visuality—sinuous lines, layered patterns, vibrant colors, dynamic brush work and textured palette knives. The artists deliberately creates ambiguous, yet beautifully forward female forms that can be experienced uniquely and personally. This exhibit at Hostetler Gallery opens with a reception from 5 to 7 pm on Saturday, and continues to be on display through August 27.

Nantucket has some of the most beautiful and pristine beaches in the world. Please respect Nantucket’s fragile environment and the beauty of our island. Clean up your litter, respect private property, and use only designated entry points. In areas where dune reclaimation is taking place, please do not cross the rope or fence barriers protecting the dunes.
BEACH SAFETY •Learn to swim. If you can’t swim an overhead stroke for at least 15 minutes you should not be in the ocean. •Never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy, and swim near a lifeguard whenever possible. •Stay out of the “surf zone” where the waves break at the shoreline. Waves are at their greatest force here, and even a small wave can lift you up and throw you headfirst into the sand. •Never run from the beach into the water and dive headfirst into the waves. Sandbars that cannot be seen from the surface may be present and/or the water may be too shallow. •Don’t jump or dive into the water from a pier or rock jetty. From a pier or jetty, water appears much deeper than it really is. What looks like 10 or 20 feet of water may only be 2 to 3 feet deep. Diving in could be fatal. The same applies for jumping headfirst into the ocean or a wave from a surfboard – don’t do it! It’s not a risk worth taking. •If you are body surfing or boogie boarding, always keep your arms out in front of you to protect your head and neck. •A rip current will pull you away from the shore, but it will not pull you under. If you’re caught in a rip current, do not swim toward the shore! Instead, swim parallel to the shore, until you’re out of the rip current. Then, swim in to shore. •Never drink alcohol or use drugs at the beach. It clouds your ability to make wise decisions, and that could be fatal! •Take direction from lifeguards at all times.

Jean spends her entire summer dedicated to making a difference here on-island. In the 60s and 70s, when whales were still being hunted ruthlessly, Jean joined campaigns like Save the Whale, Cetacean Society International, the Animal Welfare Institute, and others, but never felt she was having an impact. One day, on upper Main Street, surrounded by mansions built for whale ship owners, she realized every visitor who came here knew about Nantucket’s whaling heritage and so might be open to learning more about the contemporary issues facing whales. Armed with stalwart determination, she started the Nantucket Marine Mammal Conservation Program in 1977. She attended cetacean conferences and brought speakers to the island to raise awareness and help inform. She also relied on the old-fashioned sandwich board to spread the word, strolling the streets formerly walked by whale ship captains and their crews. When 13 Pilot Whales stranded on Cisco Beach in a storm in December 1981, they were tragically and scandalously dragged to the landfill—still alive—Jean flew into action. She admonished the New England Aquarium, whose jurisdiction covered Nantucket under the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972. She put out a call for people to train and form a marine mammal stranding team. Maria Mitchell Association, New England Aquarium, and the National Marine Fisheries Service all attended and Nantucket’s first Stranding Team was born. Today the stranding team functions under NOAA/NMFS permit as Marine Mammal Alliance Nantucket. In 2000 Jean lost her indoor space for programming and took the conservation program to the streets, manning “Information Stations” and soliciting signatures for government action to save the whales. think this was a great way to get outdoors…” said Mary Longacre, NLC member and Bioblitz participant. Looking at a breakdown of results, a little more than half of the observations were plants. That makes sense because they stay in place for a photo. The next biggest group was insects at 20 percent of observations. Birds and fungi tied at about 6 percent of observations each. Arachnids, fish, and “other animals” round out the majority of submissions. Looking through the records, there were about 20 state-listed species. That includes all taxa. A few favorites were the chain-dotted geometer (Cingilia catenaria), a small, yellow and black caterpillar found throughout the sandplain grasslands and heathlands this time of year. While ubiquitous on-island, this species is rare throughout Massachusetts. More visible in its caterpillar stage, this geometer will soon pupate into a small white and brown moth that will

be much less visible on the landscape. Other rare species seen during the BioBlitz include St. Andrew’s Cross (Hypericum stragulum), Northern Harriers (Circus hudsonius), and American eels (Anguilla rostrata). For rare species observations, the exact location is “fuzzy” to keep the locations of rarities private. In addition to rare species, 14 percent of the observations were species not native to Nantucket. These include lots of garden plants, but also some invasive species like shrub honey suckle (Lonicera morrowii). European green crabs (Carcinus maenas), honey bees (Apis mellifera), and Japanese beetles (Exomala orientalis) were the top non-native species that weren’t plants. Not all the observations were charismatic. One of my favorite was the dog vomit slime mold (Fuligo septica) which, as the name implies, resembles dog vomit. “I’m never going to look at dog barf the same”

Dog vomit slime mold

said one young participant who helped record an observation with LLNF staff. Sometimes known as “scrambled egg slime mold,” this species has worldwide distribution with visibility peaking in our region in July. It was recorded by six observers during the BioBlitz! While we may not all care about slime molds, learning something new about the world around you can have an effect on attitudes about conservation. As Helen Weeks said: “The first step to caring about any place is just knowing and loving it. The hope is that once people notice and know who that tiny insect or plant is in their backyard, they might grow to care for it. Nantucket is a thriving, dynamic ecosystem made of people and biodiverse natural organisms, living intertwined together. We are nature, and nature is us! Once our love of the flora and fauna is established, we can feel empowered and mobilized to protect it. Thanks for taking the time to take a closer look at your world around you. Together we can work
Vol. 51 No.12 • YesterdaysIsland.com to protect and preserve our beautiful island for future generations to enjoy!” How did participants collect all of this information? Using a free, public app (iNaturalist) participants take photos of anything they see in nature: birds, plants, fungi, animals, insects, etc. They upload the photo to submit the data. iNaturalist then suggests an identification (if you need one) based on their algorithm. If that doesn’t produce a likely ID, other volunteer reviewers identify the record. You can learn more about iNaturalist and how to observe by going to inaturalist.org. You can check out the results of the 2021 BioBlitz for yourself on the project page at inaturalist.org/projects/nlc-llnf-bioblitz-2021. Thanks to all of those who participated for getting out there, making observations, and supporting the Nantucket Land Council and Linda Loring Nature Foundation. Now that the BioBlitz is over, don’t stop observing and documenting. You can use iNaturalist anytime to upload photos and contribute to the information about our island’s biodiversity.

Culture Clash from page 7
Yet here we are, with bartenders and patrons both livid at the prospect of Grace Potter performing to a room full of masks. Restaurants are closing for a few days with sickness and exposure, pushing off your fish tacos. The stink of this does not just fall on the Platinum crowd, but on the rest of us as well. The diners aren’t the ones with the Covid, the chefs and the servers are. Still, I have entitled friends who haven’t received the shot. After a firm dopeslap, I don’t know what to do for them. Didn’t they see the sign on the door? Didn’t they notice that they were the only one standing there? Didn’t they realize that they had to letthe air out of their tires? They smile at me, and wave their hands, and cry politics, or technology, or Western medicine. Neither ginger ale, nor elderberries, nor yoga will keep you from a one-way ride on a helicopter with a tube down your throat. Nature can’t be tipped. Germs gracefully float over the velvet ropes. Rising tides don’t read the zoning map. Sometimes, no matter how hard you clap and wish, Tinker Bell just ain’t coming back. August is the Sunday of months, when we lie back, tilt the hat, and desperately try to forget that Monday is coming. And even if we wish hard enough, believe, and pray, Monday will still come with a bill in one hand, and a ventilator in another. Perhaps, if enough people get sick, the enlightened will listen. In the middle of a heat wave, lifeguard whistled a surfer into the beach at Cisco. He could have ignored the noise. The waves weren’t quite what he had envisioned, but they could carry him for a while and there was hope that something of substance would wash in. Still, the whistle continued. He saw everyone staring, heard the warning, and paddled into shore. A shark had been spotted by a drone twenty yards off the beach. And the world went on. As an island, as a community, as a people, we would do better to listen to the guards when they whistle than to shout at them for being too loud.

FIRST FRIDA AYS
Jean’s well-known table on Federal Street was too risky, especially at her age of 86. But that wasn’t about to deter Jean Rioux. Out came the old sandwich board concept with information, full context of the petition, and a QR code to sign online, COVID safe. This year, Jean was nearly struck by a vehicle backing out of a parking space and was knocked off her bike. After weeks of recuperation, she is back walking around town, educating the public, raising awareness and getting signatures and donations. Nothing can deter her from fighting for these magnificent animals. Now more than ever Right Whales need our outspoken support. A recent article in the Vineyard Gazette highlighted a study of Right Whale migratory and feeding patterns in our own backyard. “Even as their overall numbers have declined, scientists have noticed an uptick in their presence south of the island, considering it an important feeding ground, socializing habitat and through way as whales travel south to breed or north for the summer months.” This occurs right smack in the middle of the country’s first, but not last in the area, federally approved off-shore wind farm, Vineyard Wind 1. Will the noise and disturbance of 64 turbines being installed 15 miles south of the Vineyard disrupt the world of these leviathans? Tim Cole, leader of the Northeast Fisheries Science Center says continued studies are crucial. Referencing both construction and operation, he states “considerable uncertainty still exists regarding how the development of the region could have an impact on right whales just as they are becoming more reliant on the region.” Vineyard wind spokesman Andrew Dona promises to “continue to support the application of good science.” Jean, and the world, will be watching. If you’d like to help make a difference, please go to NantucketMMAN.org to sign the petition to encourage Congress to enact legislation to protect the North Atlantic Right Whale and support our local Rescue Team.
