Renowned Designer Visits Nantucket

Described by Sotheby’s as “undoubtedly one of the most exciting jewelry designers on the scene today,” Christopher Walling’s stunning designs range from contemporary and edgy to classic and romantic. His artistry has influenced modern jewelry, and he’s known for his use of rare natural pearls and for bringing together various colors, shapes, and textures. Don’t miss the chance to meet Walling, hear his stories, and learn how he became an internationally sought-after jewelry designer, when he comes to Nantucket this Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, August 28, 29, and 30. He will be in the Susan Lister Locke Gallery, on the waterfront at 28 Easy Street all three days for a special showing of his pieces.

Souvenirs by Robert P. Barsanti

The storm dropped a period on the summer. It stopped the Opera House Cup. It grounded the Rainbow Fleet. It closed the harbor. All across the world, as Jim Cantore got excited and the cone tightened, people watched the storm take aim at Nantucket. Out here, the boats got dragged out of the water and sat on trailers in yards. Some would slip back in the water, ready to decorate another paragraph or two until October. But most would be shrouded in plastic, stored, and regretted when the wind turns and the sun emerges in September. Sooner or later, the summer will end in a period. Plans and calls were made. Nobody was leaving early, but nobody was staying late. The coach’s whistles were blowing somewhere, far and wee, and Saorise and Stanley came running from the tee shirt stores and life guard stands, back to the fields of Middlesex and UNH. They leapt to their next paragraph as if this writing could be edited and rewritten sometime later. Nothing costs more than time: it is the luxury of August. And we spend it on interest rate changes, subscription fees and tolls when what we would really like to spend it on is another sentence or two on-island. The bill comes due around Brant Point, when you have paid for the last of your time and you have to figure out what’s next. As my old departed department head often said to me, “The boat comes around Brant Point, and it goes around Brant Point.” So it does. In the day before the storm, the boys and I waited for it on the South Shore. The water was warm, tossed, and dotted with jellyfish. We swam in the churn, survived the stings, and went back to reading on the beach. As is our habit, we stayed late on the sand as one group of beachgoers went home for showers and burgers and another group came out for barbecues and a sunset. After a moment, the Ladies sat next to us. They were women of a certain age, with big straw hats and comfortable shoes. They circled around a cooler, pulled out a brick of cheddar cheese, a box of Triscuits, and a large bottle of Chardonnay. In the approach to the storm, puffs of fog stumbled overhead underneath the long streaks of cloud far above. Towards the west, a frame of purple rose from the horizon, while to the east, a frame of white held the end-of-day sun. By this point, the surf had defeated all of the surfers, children, and fathers who needed one last dip. Instead, it rolled in four lines up to a much diminished beach and ticked the seconds away. One wave came within five feet of our position. The next crept closer. So we left. The Ladies stayed. They backed their chairs up, pulled their sweatshirts close, and refilled their glasses. If you have paid for the luxury of August, there is no reward for leaving before the wine runs out. One of my young men volunteered to take their picture for them, and the moment was saved. We slipped behind them, begged their pardon, and emerged on top of a bluff. On one boat or another, they would slip out before the storm and head back to careers, family, and e-mail that had been patiently waiting in an uncomfortable chair. Another paragraph would roll by, and then another. The punctuation will pile up. But sitting in their memories, shared with their friends, and saved on a lock screen, that picture stretched out into their future. continued on page 19

Let the Island’s Wildlife Be Wild

Page 7

Sail Endeavor a Nantucket tradition.

by Dr. Sarah Treanor Bois

established 1982

Director of Research & Education at the Linda Loring Nature Foundation

Private Charters Per Person Fares

As the old proverb goes, “If you love something, set it free…” For nature and wild things, it should be edited to read “If you love something, let it be.” There can be a fine line between loving nature and over-loving nature. This is evident at some of the most popular National Parks like Yellowstone, Arches, or Joshua Tree. Some of these most famous natural areas are getting loved to death: overcrowding, trampling vegetation, garbage, etc. Aside from physical places, the other thing that can be over-loved when it comes to nature is the nature itself. Conservation groups and environmental educators know that when people feel a connection to something, they are more likely to want to protect it and support it. With wildlife, sometimes that can go too far and people can cause more harm than good to our Nantucket wildlife. Even with the best of intentions, it is always better to leave something in the wild and let nature take its course. Not only is it common sense to keep wild things wild, but there is mounting evidence that we can do more harm than good when we try to “help wildlife.” The two primary ways this harm happens is when people feed wild animals or when they take them out of their natural environment. Feeding wildlife may seem like an enjoyable way to connect with nature, but it can often lead to serious problems. Although it might seem harmless and cute, fed wildlife can become dependent on unreliable food sources and suffer nutritionally when given inappropriate foods. Habituated wild animals are also more susceptible to predators and vehicle collisions, as they lose their fear of people and the associated flight response. On Nantucket, one example can be seen at the bridge where people illegally feed snapping turtles. In other cases, wild animals who have been fed regularly can develop foodseeking aggression and can become hostile towards people. When wild animals gather for food handouts, it can cause crowding and competition. These unnatural conditions increase the chances of fighting and injury among animals. It can also increase the spread of diseases. Feeding ducks has long been a family activity. You may have noticed the signs at the duck pond known as Consue Springs or Goose Pond owned by the Nantucket Land Bank. Giving food, especially bread, to ducks, geese, and other waterfowl can create many problems for birds and the environment, and both Mass Audubon and the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife discourage it. Feeding attracts large concentrations of waterfowl to areas that can’t naturally support such numbers. Left on their own, ducks and geese will occupy areas that provide sufficient natural food. continued on page 20

NANTUCKET HARVEST:

Beach Plums

OPEN FOR DINE IN AND TAKE OU T

W

Beach Plums are a sign that summer on Nantucket will soon ease into autumn. These deep purple (and if you are lucky, gold) fruits are ripening all across the island. They make wonderful jelly—or if a batch doesn’t set quite right, sauce for meats or even to pour over ice cream. Too hot this August to stand over a stove for long enough to make jelly? You can make juice from your beach plum harvest and freeze that until the weather is cool enough to make jelly. Here is an unusual recipe that sounds absolutely delicious written by chef Jenn Farmer and published in 2012. If you have a recipe you’d like to share for publication, email us at yi@nantucket.net.

BREAKFAST Daily 7am-1pm

Beach Plum Butter

W

3 cups beach plums, pitted Up to one half cup water 1 cup sugar 1 cup brown sugar 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon One half teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg One half teaspoon ground allspice

DINNER Monday thru Saturday

W Call in Ordering 4:00-9:30pm Pickup 5:30-10:00pm 508.325.0308 menus @ black-eyedsusans.com 10 India Street

Put the plums in a blender, adding water slowly as needed to create a puree. Place all the ingredients into a sauce pan and cook slow and low for about 30 minutes. If it is ready it will look thick and somewhat clear. Pour into hot sterilized jars, and process in boiling water for ten minutes if you are canning it. Otherwise use immediately and refrigerate the remaining butter. It keeps well for about 2 weeks. Yields 2 half-pints.

New Pharmacy Opens at NCH

August 26-Sept. 1, 2021

We’ve Moveed! We

A

In collaboration with longtime island pharmacist Allan Bell, Nantucket Cottage Hospital is opening a new community pharmacy at 10 Vesper Lane this Monday, August 30. Located just across the street from the hospital, this new pharmacy will provide patients with greater convenience and continuity of care while sustaining an important community resource. Beginning on Monday, Island Pharmacy prescriptions will automatically transfer to Nantucket Cottage Hospital’s new community pharmacy, and the Cottage Pharmacy will be open to anyone in the community, not only patients of NCH. “I approached the hospital last year regarding a potential relationship as I begin to step away from Island Pharmacy after 32 years,” explained owner Allan Bell. “I have been pursued by numerous chains and other off-island interests over the years, but I chose to reach out to NCH because of its deep roots on Nantucket and understanding of the needs of island patients.” Bell will continue to fill prescriptions at his Nantucket Pharmacy on Main Street. “I thank all of those at NCH and MGB that helped put this partnership together and allowing me to continue serving the community at Nantucket Pharmacy.” For NCH patients, the new pharmacy will provide one-stop-shopping for their medical visits, allowing them to leave the hospital campus following an appointment with prescribed medications in hand. Prices will be in line with those at other retail pharmacies. At the outset, the new pharmacy will offer prescription drugs only, but its offerings and services may grow over time. Gary A. Shaw, President and CEO of Nantucket Cottage Hospital said, “We at NCH appreciate Allan bringing us this opportunity to ensure that his and our patients can continue to get their prescriptions filled at a convenient mid-island location close to the hospital.” The Cottage Hospital plans to be open 7 days a week from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Nantucket has some of the most beautiful and pristine beaches in the world. Please respect Nantucket’s fragile environment and the beauty of our island. Clean up your litter, respect private property, and use only designated entry points. In areas where dune reclaimation is taking place, please do not cross the rope or fence barriers protecting the dunes.

BEACH SAFETY •Learn to swim. If you can’t swim an overhead stroke for at least 15 minutes you should not be in the ocean. •Never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy, and swim near a lifeguard whenever possible. •Stay out of the “surf zone” where the waves break at the shoreline. Waves are at their greatest force here, and even a small wave can lift you up and throw you headfirst into the sand. •Never run from the beach into the water and dive headfirst into the waves. Sandbars that cannot be seen from the surface may be present and/or the water may be too shallow. •Don’t jump or dive into the water from a pier or rock jetty. From a pier or jetty, water appears much deeper than it really is. What looks like 10 or 20 feet of water may only be 2 to 3 feet deep. Diving in could be fatal. The same applies for jumping headfirst into the ocean or a wave from a surfboard – don’t do it! It’s not a risk worth taking. •If you are body surfing or boogie boarding, always keep your arms out in front of you to protect your head and neck. •A rip current will pull you away from the shore, but it will not pull you under. If you’re caught in a rip current, do not swim toward the shore! Instead, swim parallel to the shore, until you’re out of the rip current. Then, swim in to shore. •Never drink alcohol or use drugs at the beach. It clouds your ability to make wise decisions, and that could be fatal! •Take direction from lifeguards at all times.

For nearly three decades we have been challenging readers to add to the series of limericks about Nantucket. During 2020, we opened a new challenge for readers to submit pandemic limericks: you can read both series by going to yesterdaysisland.com— just type LIMERICKS into the search field. This week we are sharing limericks submitted to each version. Enjoy! Bob Lyons of Auburn Hills, MI wrote this Pandemic Limerick: There once was a lad from Sconset Who was feeling a bit of COVID onset But he rushed to the Cottage Who applied their best Triage And he lived to compose this new sonnet And Mark Stout of PA (we think) wrote a complete saga for the Limerick Challenge, which he titled Nan’s Adventures on Cape Cod: Nan got herself into a scrape, So she ferried away to the Cape. With bucket in hand, She stepped on dry land, And thought she’d made good her escape.

Then Nan took a sojourn to Brewster, And fell for a young man named Wooster, They filled up her pail With strong local ale And by golly then he seduced her. Nan’s future with him wouldn’t be, As he was a cad, don’t you see. He left her in Wellfleet In swimsuit and bare feet And ran off with the can to Mashpee.

Souvenirs from page 5

Which is what a souvenir is, after all. As the story grows grim and gray, so you slip back home when you were all together, on the beach, with wine and crackers. Everyone needs something to take from Nantucket because Winter, grim and gray, is coming. I suppose you take what you value. I would love for people to have holy moments on their phone that will light and warm them through the winter. However, someone will want a t-shirt that will be the envy of his Hot Yoga studio, someone else want a quahog shell for an ashtray, and some idiot will take the “Stone Alley” sign. My mother loved to take sand. Whenever she would come to the island, she would take a moment on one of the beaches and walk a few hundred yards out into the sand. Then, she would bend over, scoop up a handful of sand, deposit it into a zip lock bag as if she was dropping in candies. After she died, we found fifteen bags, labeled with the date and the beach, in her classroom. I don’t think they were for student labs. We all take something with us. The waiters and sandwich makers, in an evening away from the playing fields, will tell and re-tell about their summers on Nobadeer. The ladies will think about the approaching hurricane and re-drink that wine. In their words and in their cups, they will come home. For another, the souvenir came on a last backward glance at a building brown ocean, framed by waves of beach grass, and the rolling puffs of fog tumbling overhead in the last golden glow of a setting sun. Once you have slept on an island, you will never be quite the same. In the cold silence, you will hear the roll of the surf. In the dust, you will smell the salt spray. In the January gust, you will feel the August wind off the waves. In the dark and lonely quiet of wherever you are, you will remember where you are not. Home is not where your bills are addressed and it’s not where you are from. Home is the first place you check the weather. Home is the place you want to be. And your souvenir will take you there.

Let the Island’s Wildlife be Wild from page 7

Foods commonly fed to waterfowl, such as bread, crackers, and popcorn, are typically low in protein and essential nutrients and minerals. While a single feeding of these “junk foods” may not harm waterfowl, it can add up. If everyone gives “only a few” pieces of bread or crackers to ducks and geese, it quickly becomes the bulk of what wild waterfowl consume and results in a variety of nutritional disorders. Similarly, feeding deer is harmful for numerous reasons. Feeding deer can lead to decreased nutrition for deer during winter. Deer are ruminants and have a multi-chambered stomach with a complicated digestive process. If the type of food the deer consume is suddenly changed through feeding by humans, it can take considerable time for the digestive process to adapt to the new food. The animal can receive little nutrition when it needs it most. Feeding can negatively affect deer behavior, leading to increased social conflict among deer. It can also alter the migratory movements of deer to critical wintering areas. In addition to not feeding wildlife, it’s also important to leave wild animals where they are. That goes for baby birds, deer, and rabbits in spring when people often find baby animals “alone.” It is not legal—individuals are not permitted to possess and/or raise any species of wild animal in captivity. Leave that to professional wildlife rehabbers. That might seem pretty obvious, but there have been multiple reports and evidence of people collecting young turtles (usually hatchlings or yearlings). This is also illegal. Nantucket has three species of freshwater turtles. The spotted turtle is illegal to possess because it is a protected species. The other two—snapping turtles and eastern painted turtles—require a permit to possess live or dead individuals (including shells). At this time of year (August to September), baby turtles are hatching out of eggs buried months earlier. Please resist the urge to take home any of these critters. They may seem very vulnerable, but this is how they’ve evolved to persist over time. Nature knows best! Wildlife are not pets. The care requirements in captivity can be astonishing.

A turtle’s needs can be easily met in the wild — lots of food, water, sunlight, and space to meet their individual, social, and ecological needs. It is difficult, if not impossible, to meet these same requirements in a human’s home. In line with turtles, August is also a popular month for caterpillars. In the interest of helping pollinator populations, some well-meaning people are collecting caterpillars to raise – especially monarchs. While well-intentioned, these captures could actually do more harm than good. Research from the University of Chicago demonstrated that monarchs raised in captivity have a more difficult time migrating come fall. Even the monarchs sourced from wild populations have a hard time orienting south— the direction they need to go. Previous research from the same group (published in 2019) showed that commercially-raised monarchs—the kind people order online—were worse at orienting south than their wild counterparts. These commercially available monarchs were genetically distinct. This research shows that any captivity can affect the butterfly’s ability to migrate. Monarch caterpillars raised by humans also have been shown to have weaker flight muscles primarily due to lack of proper nutrition. A person who raises monarchs as a hobby isn’t driven by the same motivation the monarch has in order to survive. They eat constantly! So, what does this mean on Nantucket? Please don’t take the monarchs out of the wild! Even if you’re careful. Even if your kids will love it. Even if you’re a teacher. We want them to succeed and breed so we can see them again next year. Monarchs know how to do monarchs the best. What can you do to help Nantucket wildlife? It’s wonderful to admire these creatures in their natural habitat. Get out into nature and observe, take pictures, and enjoy. Let’s help protect their habitat and ensure clean water and native vegetation. For turtles, help them cross the road in the direction they are travelling, but don’t feed or tease them with raw chicken. For monarchs, let the milkweed plants and the caterpillars be and plant more! In your own yard, think about planting a pollinator garden with native species. For other wildlife, enjoy them from afar. Help support one of your local conservation and wildlife organizations. The work they do protecting habitat helps ensure population success in the future.
